Midseason Review/New Top 30 Prospects
Notes:
There’s nothing to report.
Scranton (62-54; 25-17 in the second half) (Tied with Lehigh Valley, 0-0, in the first inning. This game was suspended due to rain)
They went down 1-2-3 in the first. I don’t feel a need to type out an entire boxscore here.
Somerset (60-54; 23-22 in the second half) (Lost to New Hampshire, 7-1. Somerset, a consistent playoff team in this organization, is two games behind Reading for the second-half title)
2B Connor McGinnis: 0-for-3, BB, K
C Omar Alfonzo: 1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
As I said in a previous report, Alfonzo has had a difficult year personally so it’s hard to “criticize” his play. For today, he drove in their lone run.
SS Roderick Arias: 0-for-4, K
3B Coby Morales: 1-for-4
LF Jackson Castillo: 0-for-4
1B Josh Moylan: 0-for-4
DH Manuel Palencia: 0-for-3
CF Cole Gabrielson: 0-for-3
RF Luis Durango: 1-for-3, R, SB (6)
Durango is 42-for-52 stealing bases between here and Hudson Valley. I wanted to see how many infield/bunt hits he has, but those columns are blank on Fangraphs, so I guess it isn’t tracked. One thing we do know is that he hits a ton of ground balls, as he entered today with a whopping 66.1% ground ball percentage between here, Tampa, and Hudson Valley. Amongst players with 250+ PA, that is the fourth highest rate in minor league baseball. For many, that’s a bad thing. For him, it works.
RHP Rory Fox: (L, 1-1) 7 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
Fox needed 96 pitches to get through seven innings. Earlier this season, he had 8-inning and 7-inning efforts for Hudson Valley. Overall, he has tossed 104.2 innings in 19 games (18 starts). For Somerset: 4.84 ERA (22.1 IP, 27 H, 13 R, 12 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 16 K)
RHP Tony Rossi: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Rossi’s 4th straight appearance with at least two strikeouts (all were 1-inning outings). He owns a 3.04 ERA over 23.2 innings with a 31/6 K/BB at this level.
RHP Kevin Stevens: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Harrison Cohen: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Hudson Valley (55-57; 25-23 in the second half) (Defeated Wilmington, 5-2. Frederick leads the second-half race, but they are irrelevant as they won the first half. Right now, the race for the second half-title is between Greensboro (27-21), Wilmington (25-22), Hudson Valley (25-23), and Brooklyn (24-23)).
DH Eric Genther: 0-for-2, R, SB (7), 2 BB, K
.266/.402/.428 in 436 PA (19 doubles, 1 triple, 12 HR, 57 RBI, 59 R, 7-for-8 SB, 13.1% BB, 18.6% K). There isn’t much to complain about in his offensive profile. Defensively? He is a work in progress. He has 14 errors and has thrown out only 8.99% of basestealers in 56 games behind the dish.
SS Jackson Lovich: 2-for-4, 3B (1), 3 RBI, SB (10), K
Lovich is the new orgnizational leader in RBI (77). First 14 High-A games: Zero extra-base hits. Last two games: 3 extra-base hits (1 triple, 2 HR). When you are dealing with a small sample size, that’s enough to increase your SLG from .333 to .476. Overall, between here and Tampa: .287/.356/.504 in 432 PA (17 doubles, 3 triples, 20 HR, 77 RBI, 73 R, 31-for-39 SB, 9.5% BB, 29.2% K).
C David McCann: 1-for-4, K
1B Kyle West: 1-for-3, 2B (16), R, SB (15), BB
3B Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek: 1-for-4, R, SB (7), K
Martin-Grudzielanek leads the organization with 78 runs scored. He is third in the organization in stolen bases with 41. Duke Ellis has 44 and Luis Durango has 42.
2B Enmanuel Tejeda: 0-for-2, CS (6), BB, K
LF Robbie Burnett: 1-for-3, 2 RBI, R, SB (5), K
CF Willy Montero: 0-for-3, K
RF Camden Troyer: 0-for-2, R, BB
LHP Allen Facundo: (W, 4-3) 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, HR
A much-need outing for Facundo, who has scuffled lately. He owns a 5.08 ERA over 83.1 innings with a 108/60 K/BB since his promotion. Overall, he has 133 strikeouts. Entering today’s action, the minor league leaders are the unreal Kade Anderson (Double-A, SEA) and Jonathan Santucci (Double-A, Triple-A, NYM). They each have 135. By the way, Anderson has a ridiculous 1.06 ERA in 93.1 innings. Insane.
RHP Hansel Rincon: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.19 ERA (36.2 IP, 29 H, 19 R, 13 ER, 2 HR, 18 BB, 55 K). His strikeout rate is 32.9%.
RHP Wilmy Sanchez (S, 5): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
At this level: 3.07 ERA (29.1 IP, 18 H, 13 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 18 BB, 48 K). His strikeout rate is 39.0%.
Tampa (65-47; 30-16 in the second half) (Demolished Dunedin again, 18-8. The first 12 runs were scored without the aid of an extra-base hit. They eventually hit a couple of home runs. They won the final four games in the series and have an 8-game lead over Dunedin. Their lead over Fort Myers is six games)
SS Dax Kilby: 2-for-3, RBI, 3 R, 4 BB, K
Last four games: 8-for-18 with six walks. For Tampa, in 18 games, he is hitting .286/.432/.443 with 18 walks in 88 plate appearances (20.5%).
CF Wilberson De Pena: 1-for-3, RBI, R
I am not sure why he left the game.
CF Diego Castellanos: 2-for-4, R, K
Castellanos is 10-for-30 to begin his professional journey. He has reached base in seven of his eight gams (at least one hit in six of those games).
DH Yostin Pena: 2-for-6, RBI, 2 R, BB, 2 K
Pena’s first game since August 8th. Since promotion: .310/.333/.476 in 45 PA (0 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 7 R, 3-for-3 SB). Between here and the DSL, he has 11 doubles, 4 triples, 9 home runs, and 65 RBI in 47 games. He is also 30-for-33 stealing bases.
RF Paul Contreras: 0-for-5, R, BB
C Bear Harrison: 1-for-4, 2 R, 2 BB
CF Brando Mayea: 4-for-5, RBI, 3 R, K
Mayea is crushing it. He has hit safely in 18 straight starts and has multiple hits in three of his last four games. He is hitting .265/.343/.372 in 283 plate appearances this season.
1B Tyce Armstrong: 3-for-6, HR (2), 6 RBI, 2 R, 2 K
There’s a chance that Armstrong, in his debut season, will never drive home six runs in a game again. It’s not exactly easy. Anyway, the 6’4″ slugger is hitting .270/.372/.486 in his first ten professional games.
2B Luis Escudero: 3-for-5, HR (9), 3 RBI, 2 R, BB, K
Escudero reaches double digits in home runs (hit one in the FCL). After five straight hitless games, he has three consecutive multi-hit efforts.
3B Bayram Hot: 1-for-5, R, SB (3), BB, 2 K
RHP Wyatt Parliament: 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
RHP Danny Flatt: (W, 2-3) 2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 HR, 2 HR
RHP Josh Tiedemann: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Rafael Arias: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Matthew Tippie: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.16 ERA (42.2 IP, 31 H, 23 R, 15 ER, 4 HR, 20 BB, 52 K). April: 3.86 ERA (11.2 innings); May: 8.31 ERA (8.2 innings); June: 1.13 ERA (8 innings); July: 0.96 ERA (9.1 innings); August: 0.00 ERA (5 innings). The Yankees signed him as an undrafted free agent last July.
