Notes:
RHP Chris Veach went on the injured list on June 14th after leaving a game during warm-ups. Today, he was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
The 24-year-old posted a 2.01 ERA (2.95 FIP) in 22.1 innings with a 36.7% K and 11.1% BB for Hudson Valley/Somerset before his injury. Most of the “good” stuff came during his High-A stint, though he only tossed eight innings for Somerset.
The signing bonus for RHP Chien-Fan Lai was released. The 18-year-old will receive $872,500. The Yankees have plenty of money to spend the rest of the year and used some of that excess on Lai. We have no idea how international free agency (or a draft) will work in 2027 and beyond, and you don’t get to “carry over” money regardless. Expect a few more big signing bonuses.
Scranton (39-38) (Defeated Indianapolis, 6-4)
2B Marco Luciano: 0-for-5, 2 K
RF Yanquiel Fernandez: 1-for-4, R, K
Fernandez has an 8-game hitting streak.
DH Garrett Martin: 1-for-3, R, BB, K
No home runs tonight? They should have traded him when he had Aaron Judge-level value! Anyway, going back to his days with Somerset, he has an 11-game hitting streak that includes five home runs.
3B Tyler Hardman: 2-for-4, 2 HR (5), 4 RBI, 2 R
Hardman’s second 2-HR game this season (tenth career multi-HR effort). Between here and Somerset, he has 18 home runs and 55 RBI in 72 games.
1B Ernesto Martinez Jr.: 1-for-4, HR (13), RBI, R, K
C Payton Henry: 0-for-3, HBP, K
LF Kenedy Corona: 0-for-4, 2 K
CF Duke Ellis: 2-for-4, R, SB (32)
Players like Ellis were the most screwed when MLB changed the September roster rules.
SS Jonathan Ornelas: 1-for-4, RBI
RHP Dom Hamel: (W, 3-8) 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 4 K
RHP Danny Watson: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Angel Chivilli: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
LHP Will Brian: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
RHP Carlos Lagrange: (S, 1) 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Lagrange, who earned his first professional save, maxed out at 101.8 MPH and threw six pitches over 100 (including a 100.7 MPH fastball to end the game). He got the final out in the 8th but struggled to begin in the 9th (single, HBP). When you have dominant stuff, it’s easier to work your way out of jams. The Yankees think he will be ready for an MLB tryout before they make trade deadline decisions. That doesn’t mean he’ll be up on August 2nd (the deadline is 8/3 this year). It means they probably want to see him for at least a few weeks. The clock is ticking.
Somerset (38-34) (Lost to New Hampshire, 2-1)
DH Jackson Castillo: 1-for-4, HR (6), RBI, R, SB (6)
Position breakdown (even though he DH’s tonight!): LF: 37 starts; CF: 29 starts; RF: 5 starts. He is hitting .274/.355/.420
CF Jace Avina: 0-for-4, 3 K
The triple slash remains strong (.282/.361/.564), and his walk rate is acceptable (10%). It’s the strikeouts (30.5%) that cause pause.
RF DJ Gladney: 0-for-4, 4 K
Gladney’s second straight four-strikeout game.
1B Nicholas Torres: 1-for-4, K
3B Coby Morales: 1-for-4, 2B (14), K
Morales is hitting .292/.352/.477 in June.
C Manuel Palencia: 1-for-2, BB
LF Josh Moylan: 0-for-3, 2 K
SS Kevin Verde: 0-for-3, 3 K
2B Connor McGinnis: 0-for-2, HBP, K
RHP Jack Cebert (L, 2-3): 5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
Since promotion: 6.39 ERA (43.2 IP, 52 H, 33 R, 31 ER, 11 HR, 12 BB, 55 K). He’s had his share of ups and downs at this level, though one of his “downs” was brutal for the ERA (4 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 9 ER).
RHP Kelly Austin: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Ben Grable: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Since promotion: 3.38 ERA (18.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 24 K). He has tossed 7.2 scoreless innings in June.
Hudson Valley (32-38) (Lost to Bowling Green, 6-5, in 11 innings)
SS Kaeden Kent: 2-for-6, 2B (18), RBI, R, 2 K
Kent’s RBI single in the top of the 11th gave Hudson Valley the lead.
DH Core Jackson: 1-for-6, K
RF Wilson Rodriguez: 2-for-4, 2B (11), HR (7), SF, 3 RBI, K
Rodriguez hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 10th. His OPS is now over .800 (.802), and he has homered in back-to-back games. Five of his seven home runs have come in June. If he can sustain this power with his low K%, the Yankees have an exciting and interesting prospect on their hands. Yes, one I did not rank in the preseason. I admit my mistakes.
1B Kyle West: 1-for-5, K
3B Roderick Arias: 2-for-5, 2 K
Arias has a 6-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games. His OPS is .696 (was .559 before this stretch).
2B Enmanuel Tejeda: 1-for-5, HR (4), RBI, 2 R
Not the likeliest player to hit a game-tying home run in the top of the 9th!
C Josue Gonzalez: 2-for-5, SB (4), 2 K
CF Camden Troyer: 1-for-4, 2B (13), R, BB
LF Luis Durango: 1-for-3
PH Eric Genther: 1-for-1
PR-LF Robbie Burnett: 0-for-0, BB
LHP Allen Facundo: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K
Facundo has three double-digit strikeout efforts this season. In 12 starts, he owns a 4.15 ERA over 62.2 innings (40 H, 26 R, 24 ER, 2 HR, 38 BB, 91 K). Entering tonight, Jackson Cox (Colorado; A+, AA) was the minor league leader with 96 strikeouts.
RHP Thomas Balboni Jr.: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Luis Velasquez: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Wilmy Sanchez: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Jack Sokol: (L, 1-3) 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Tampa (38-34) (Lost to Dunedin, 12-6)
SS Jackson Lovich: 1-for-4, HR (14), RBI, 2 R, BB, K
Lovich had zero home runs in his first ten June games. He has three in his last eight games.
CF Brando Mayea: 0-for-5, R, 2 K
He’s had a few big games lately, but is still hitting only .237/.309/.319 in 149 PA.
C Luis Puello: 0-for-3, R, BB, K
3B Hans Montero: 1-for-4, SB (17), 2 K
RF Willy Montero: 3-for-3, 2B (16), HR (9), 4 RBI, R, CS (2), BB
For the second night in a row, Montero was a triple short of the cycle. He has a 6-game hitting streak and is hitting .264/.343/.459.
LF JoJo Jackson: 0-for-2
LF Gabriel Lara: 0-for-2, K
DH Engelth Urena: 1-for-3, 2B (11), BB, 2 K
2B Luis Escudero: 1-for-4, HR (6), RBI, R
Escudero hitting six home runs in 19 games (seven in 25 games if we include the FCL) wasn’t on any of my 2,348 Bingo cards. Four of those home runs have come in his last five games.
1B David McCann: 1-for-4
RHP Wyatt Parliament: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
RHP J.T. Etheridge: (L, 6-1) 2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Etheridge had a 3.73 ERA. Had. His last two appearances (4.1 IP, 13 H, 13 R, 12 ER) have ballooned that ERA to 6.31.
LHP Parker Seay: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
RHP Jordarlin Mendoza: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
FCL Yankees (19-20) (Lost to the Phillies, 18-4. They were down 6-4 entering the 7th inning, when the Phillies put up a 12-spot. Ouch.)
3B Richard Matic: 2-for-4, 3B (2), 2 RBI, R, BB
Matic has four straight multi-hit efforts (16 this season). He is hitting .329/.448/.517 in 181 PA with a 10-for-13 SB rate.
RF Wilberson De Pena: 1-for-4, R, SB (17), BB
.358/.417/.675 (1.092 OPS) in 168 PA (13 doubles, 1 triple, 11 HR, 46 RBI, 30 R, 17-for-22 SB)
C Queni Pineda: 1-for-4, 2 K
2B Leni Done: 0-for-3, CS (7), BB

SS Dexters Peralta: 0-for-4, K
LF Estivenzon Montero: 0-for-3, BB, K
1B Christofer Reyes: 0-for-3, R, BB, 2 K
RHP Danny Flatt: 2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Manuel Cruz (L, 3-2): 3.2 IP, 5 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 5 BB, 2 K
RHP Stanly Alcantara: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 4 BB, 1 K
RHP Jorge Luna: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
DSL Yankees (10-7) (Lead the DSL Marlins, 11-2, in the second inning. They scored 11 runs in the first inning. However, this game was suspended due to rain. No makeup date has been announced. If it isn’t continued, all the numbers are wiped away)
If it isn’t completed, Yostin Pena would be the angriest. He is 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBI. Catcher Cesar Lopez is 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and three RBI, while SS Stiven Marinez has drawn two walks, stolen a base, and scored two runs.
DSL Bombers (7-10) (Lead the DSL Mets Orange, 2-0, in the fourth inning. This game was suspended due to rain with a July 4th continuation date.)
SS Mani Cedeno has a double and a run scored, while 19-year-old RHP Cesar Acosta has eight strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
