Notes:
RHP Chris Veach, who has pitched well this season, was placed on the injured list one day after being pulled from the game while warming up. As I said yesterday, that is never a good thing.
Veach started the season with Hudson Valley, where he pitched to a 0.63 ERA (1.38 FIP) with a 44.6% K over 14.1 innings. If that doesn’t earn you a promotion, nothing will. Upon arriving in Somerset, he had a poor first game (4 runs in 1.1 innings). Since then, he has tossed 6.2 scoreless innings with two hits allowed, a 30.8% K and 15.4% BB (yes, that’s on the high side).
A few minor moves today, as RHP Alexander Cornielle was moved up to Scranton, while LHP Will Brian was moved back down to Somerset after one appearance. RHP Harrison Cohen‘s IL stint was short, as Somerset activated him today.
Scranton (34-34) (Defeated Lehigh Valley, 6-5. Rochester is 42-25 and Memphis is 43-26. No chance at a first-half title)
SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-3, 2B (11), R, HBP
Lombard Jr., who has an 8-game hitting streak, has six doubles and two home runs in his last seven games. He is hitting .292/.407/.542 in June.
2B Marco Luciano: 1-for-4, RBI, K
3B Jonathan Ornelas: 1-for-4, RBI
Starts by position: 2B: 26; 3B: 14; LF: 7; SS: 1
1B Seth Brown: 2-for-3, R, BB, K
DH Tyler Hardman: 2-for-4, HR (3), RBI, 2 R, K
Hardman has 16 home runs and 50 RBI in 63 games between here and Somerset. He has picked up the pace at this level in June, hitting .286/.388/.548.
LF Ernesto Martinez Jr.: 2-for-4, HR (12), 3 RBI, R, 2 K
He is one away from tying his personal best for HR in a season (13 in 110 games in 2024)
RF Yanquiel Fernandez: 0-for-0
RF-LF Kenedy Corona: 0-for-4
CF Duke Ellis: 0-for-4
C Miguel Palma: 1-for-3, 2B (1), R, K
RHP Elmer Rodriguez: 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, HR
3.00 ERA (51 IP, 38 H, 21 R, 17 ER, 4 HR, 24 BB, 51 K). When he pitched for the Yankees, I was surprised when the broadcast booth acted as if Elmer allowing some walks was surprising. He had a 9.4% BB rate in the minors last season and it is higher this season. Yes, still lower than his 14.1% MLB rate this season, but allowing walks is a part of his profile.
RHP Carlos Lagrange: 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, HR
He allowed a 2-run home run in his third inning of work. So far, he is coming in for extended outings. The vision for him in 2026 may be that of a reliever who pitches every 2-3 days, over one they will ask to pitch back-to-back days. Still time to figure that out. He didn’t hit 100 MPH today (topped out at 99.1).
RHP Dylan Coleman (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Somerset (35-28) (Defeated Binghamton, 7-6, in ten innings. Hartford is 35-27. New Hampshire is 31-30, while Portland has fallen to 30-31)
DH Jackson Castillo: 1-for-5, RBI, K
.276/.365/.431 in 200 PA (10 doubles, 1 triple, 5 HR, 25 RBI, 27 R, 3-for-4 SB, 11% BB, 23.5% K). The most surprising part of his profile is the lack of stolen base attempts. He went 22-for-23 last season and is 48-for-56 in his career.
RF Garrett Martin: 3-for-5, 2 RBI, R, K
Known for his power-speed combo, Martin notched three singles today. He is hitting .253/.326/.531 in 273 PA (11 doubles, 19 HR, 49 RBI, 43 R, 16-for-20 SB, 8.4% BB, 23.8% K). Martin has a reverse split this season, hitting .261/.335/.543 against RHP and .230/.299/.492 against LHP.
1B Nicholas Torres: 1-for-3, R, 2 BB
CF DJ Gladney: 1-for-5, 2B (11), 2 RBI, 2 K
Gladney is certainly not on top prospect lists, but he has played well (.288/.346/.555 in 212 PA; 11 doubles, 2 triples, 12 HR, 11-for-12 SB). That comes with a 33% K rate and .387 BABIP. The Yankees signed him as a minor league free agent over the winter.
3B Coby Morales: 1-for-5, 3 K
C Tomas Frick: 0-for-4
PH-C Manuel Palencia: 0-for-1
PR Kevin Verde: 0-for-0, R
Verde scored the winning run (on an error as a ghost runner) in the 10th.
2B Connor McGinnis: 1-for-4, R, K
SS Owen Cobb: 2-for-4, 2 2B (9), RBI, 2 R, SB (8), BB
Cobb needed a good game (4-for-38 this month).
LF Cole Gabrielson: 1-for-3, R, BB
RHP Ben Hess: 3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
They have yet to take the leash off Hess, who tossed 51 pitches today, since he came off the injured list. He owns a 4.12 ERA in 19.2 innings with a 28/12 K/BB. He has tossed those 19.2 innings in eight starts, with five of those innings coming in his 2026 debut (before he was hurt).
RHP Chase Chaney: 3.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
RHP Harrison Cohen: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Tony Rossi: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Rossi’s magic carpet ride continues. Since his promotion: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K. He hasn’t allowed a home run in 66.2 career innings. Pipeline recently wrote a profile of him. Look at the video of his slider. Nasty.
RHP Kelly Austin (W, 3-1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Hudson Valley (29-33) (Defeated Jersey Shore, 6-3)
SS Kaeden Kent: 2-for-5, RBI, R, SB (16)
Kent easily leads the organization with 74 hits. He is hitting .297/.353/.426 in 272 PA. Including last season, he has 378 PA at this level.
DH Core Jackson: 1-for-5, HR (6), RBI, R, 2 K
His .816 OPS stands out. Remember that there were questions about his offense. The 22.7% K rate is fine.
C Eric Genther: 2-for-3, HR (6), RBI, R, BB
LF Wilson Rodriguez: 2-for-4, 3B (4), RBI, R
Rodriguez is up to .260/.375/.407 in 252 PA. The power is starting to show up, and his BABIP has normalized (it is up to .318). He won’t turn 22 until September, and he is more than holding his own in his first taste of High-A. Intriguing.
3B Roderick Arias: 2-for-3, 2B (8), RBI, R, SB (17), BB, K
Arias is showing life. He has an 8-game hitting streak (13-for-31). Is he suddenly a prospect again? Eight games shouldn’t convince anyone of that, and he is still hitting only .226/.325/.337.
2B Enmanuel Tejeda: 0-for-4, K
1B Josh Moylan: 0-for-4, RBI, K
CF Camden Troyer: 1-for-3, 2B (12), R, BB, K
RF Luis Durango: 2-for-4, 2B (2), K
RHP Sean Paul Linan: 4 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
5.75 ERA (40.2 IP, 36 H, 30 R, 26 ER, 7 HR, 16 BB, 59 K). I would love to see his pitch breakdowns. If the Yankees are trying to develop him as a starter, they are going to ask him not to emphasize his trademark changeup because he needs to develop other pitches. If the bullpen is his future, they will change the formula.
RHP Jack Sokol: (W, 1-2) 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Luis Velasquez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
If he can stay healthy, he has some potential as a relief prospect. He is still on his rehab assignment (7th game).
RHP Bryce Warrecker: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Brady Kirtner: (S, 1) 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Tampa (34-29) (Lost to Bradenton, 10-3. The Tarpons have put together a solid first half, but they are five games behind Clearwater for the title.)
DH Jackson Lovich: 1-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB, K
The one thing that is missing this month is power (zero extra-base hits in ten games). In May, he compiled a .741 SLG (3 doubles, 2 triples, 8 home runs). The full season numbers remain solid (.293/.372/.539).
SS Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek: 1-for-5, SB (19), 2 K
3B Hans Montero: 0-for-3, 2 BB
CF Willy Montero: 2-for-5, 2 K
The Montero Duo has played a big role in the 34-29 season. Willy is hitting .250/.335/.406 with 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts. Hans went on a tear that included both a 3-HR and 5-hit game. He has settled down since then, but is still hitting .268/.390/.495 with 15 stolen bases in 16 attempts. Both have played at this level for a while.
LF Luis Puello: 0-for-3
LF JoJo Jackson: 0-for-1
C David McCann: 1-for-3, R, BB, K
C Engelth Urena: 0-for-0
1B Austin Green: 2-for-4, 2B (1), R, K
Green has more walks (13) than strikeouts (10) in his 22 games for Tampa.
2B Luis Escudero: 1-for-3, 2B (3), SB (2), BB, 2 K
RF Gabriel Lara: 1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, R, SB (3), BB, 2 K
Power is not a major piece of his skill set, but he has a pair of home runs in 18 games between here and the FCL. He is 5-for-6 in the stolen base category.
RHP Brennan Stuprich (L, 2-1): 4 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, HR
RHP Jordarlin Mendoza: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
The first of their high-octane projects puts together a strong effort. He maxed out at 98.8 MPH with his sinker. He owns a 10.00 ERA in 18 IP (21 H, 20 R, 20 ER, 2 HR, 15 BB, 22 K). That looks bad, but he does have eight straight scoreless appearances (7.1 IP, 6 H, 5 BB, 6 K). Some of that is still not great, but they will continue to invest time in his arm.
RHP Kevin Stevens: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Greysen Carter: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
The second of their high-octane projects didn’t pitch great today. Like Mendoza, he maxed out at 98.8, though Carter did it with his 4-seam fastball. Season: 3.42 ERA (26.1 IP, 17 H, 14 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 20 BB, 32 K). Walk update: 14 BB in his first ten innings; 6 BB in 16.1 innings since.
RHP Matthew Tippie: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
