Yankees MILB 5/31: George Lombard Jr. Doubles, Homers

Top 30 Prospects

Injury Log

Notes:

I have nothing for you.

Scranton (28-27) (Defeated Worcester, 1-0)

SS George Lombard Jr.2-for-4, 2B (5), HR (2), RBI, R, K
Lombard Jr. started and ended the scoring with a leadoff home run.  He is hitting .196/.360/.299 in 136 PA since his promotion. All seven of his extra-base hits have come in his last 12 games (12-for-48; .250). He had a 2-hit game before this run of extra-base hits, so I can expand this to say he is 14-for-52 (.269) in his last 13 games.
LF Spencer Jones0-for-3, BB, 2 K
Since demotion: 6-for-22 with two home runs, four walks, and ten strikeouts.
2B Oswaldo Cabrera1-for-3, 2B (7)
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-2, SB (1), BB
While speed is not a big part of his profile, he has reached double digits in stolen bases three times in his minor league career and has an 80% career success rate (56-for-70).
1B Seth Brown0-for-3, 2 K
C Payton Henry0-for-3, K
.230/.331/.372 in 130 PA.
DH Ali Sanchez1-for-3, 2 K
.237/.338/.398 in 136 PA. I like to update you on Henry and Sanchez as they are the two “next men up” on the catching depth chart. Hey, if you want Austin Wells to have a “reset” in the minors, fine. But don’t expect the MLB catching to be any better than what it is.
CF Duke Ellis0-for-3, K
RF Kenedy Corona0-for-3, K

RHP Adam Kloffenstein: (W, 2-3) 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K
In his long minor league career, he has four 10+ strikeout efforts (11 is his best).
RHP Bradley Hanner2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
1.71 ERA (26.1 IP, 18 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 10 BB, 38 K). I have learned to pay attention to pitchers like Hanner because the Yankees have a knack for making something out of pitchers in his mold.
RHP Peter Strzelecki (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Somerset (26-25) (Lost to New Hampshire, 3-2.  The two squads split the 6-game series)

RF Jace Avina3-for-5, 2 2B (15), HR (14), RBI, R, SB (5), K
Avina has a 29-game on-base streak.  Overall, he is having quite a campaign, hitting .279/.361/.589 in 216 PA (15 doubles, 1 triple, 14 HR, 35 RBI, 44 R, 5-for-5 SB, 10.2% BB, 31.0% K).  In May, he hit .339/.429/.629 with 11 doubles, 8 HR, 20 RBI, and 29 runs.  Avina leads the Eastern League in runs and extra-base hits. I have mentioned the high K% all season. It’s probably going to stick as a part of his profile. Can he reduce it somewhat? That’s the question to answer.
DH Garrett Martin1-for-5, SB (11), 3 K
.263/.326/.551 in 218 PA (9 doubles, 16 HR, 43 RBI, 35 R, 11-for-15 SB, 7.3% BB, 23.4% K). He leads the Eastern League in home runs and RBI.
1B Nicholas Torres2-for-4, 2B (3), R, SB (2)
Torres has six multi-hit games in 13 games played.
   1B Abrahan Gutierrez0-for-1
3B Coby Morales0-for-2, BB, 2 K
I am not sure why he left the game.
   3B Kevin Verde1-for-1, BB
LF Jackson Castillo0-for-5, 2 K
C Manuel Palencia0-for-4, BB
2B Connor McGinnis: 2-for-3, BB
SS Owen Cobb1-for-4

RHP Ben Hess2.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
Hess tossed 39 pitches today.  It’s not technically a rehab stint, but it is one.
RHP Chase Chaney: (L, 2-3)  5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, HR
RHP Chris Veach1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
After allowing four runs in his Somerset debut, he has four straight scoreless appearances (3.1 innings)

Hudson Valley (23-27) (Defeated Bowling Green, 4-3, in ten innings)

2B Kaeden Kent1-for-5, 2B (10), 2 K
Could Kent get to Somerset soon? Sure. Remember that the Yankees have used players like Verde in Somerset over promoting Kent. That is a sure sign that they don’t feel he is ready yet.
SS Core Jackson1-for-4, HR (5), RBI, R, BB
Jackson has three home runs in his last three games and is 5-for-14 since coming off the injured list.
C Eric Genther1-for-3, HR (4), 2 RBI, R, 2 BB
Jackson and Genther went back-to-back in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game.  Genther drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th to win the game.
1B Kyle West1-for-4, HR (7), RBI, R
West didn’t homer in 11 games after being drafted last year. He has seven in 48 games this year. The rest of his profile needs work, but there’s at least something to work with.
RF Wilson Rodriguez0-for-2, CS (3), 2 BB
Rodriguez has 36 walks (18.1%) and 37 strikeouts (18.6%) in 199 PA.
3B Enmanuel Tejeda1-for-4, SB (4), K
Tejeda is 16-for-22 (72.7%) stealing bases between here and Tampa.
DH Josue Gonzalez0-for-4
  PR Santiago Gomez: 0-for-0, R
CF Camden Troyer0-for-3, SB (6), BB
LF Josh Moylan1-for-3, 2 K
  LF Cole Gabrielson0-for-0

RHP Chase Hampton4.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Hampton threw 65 pitches today.  He has tossed 16.1 innings during his rehab stint, striking out 14 while walking four.
LHP Franyer Herrera: (W, 3-2)  5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
3.75 ERA (36 IP, 32 H, 20 R, 15 ER, 7 HR, 21 BB, 46 K). The walks are high, but Herrera has done a nice job.

Tampa (25-26) (Shut down Daytona, 7-0)

SS Jackson Lovich1-for-5, RBI, K
Lovich’s OPS falls to 1.000.  He finishes May at .358/.430/.741 with 22 runs and 23 RBI. Can he move to Hudson Valley soon? Sure. A lot goes into that which we aren’t privy to.
3B Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek1-for-5, 2B (7), RBI, R, K
He ends May at .305/.409/.516 with five doubles, five home runs, 15 RBI, 24 runs, and 11 stolen bases. I probably wouldn’t move him up yet, but he’s showing signs of adjustment!
C Luis Puello1-for-5, HR (3), 3 RBI, R, 2 K
.262/.286/.525 in 63 PA (3 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 5 R). He also has 23 strikeouts (36.5%).
2B Hans Montero0-for-4, BB, 2 K
LF Willy Montero1-for-5, HR (5), RBI, R, 3 K
Montero has a 9-game hitting streak (13-for-36; 3 doubles, 2 HR)
CF JoJo Jackson2-for-3, 2 R, CS (4), HBP
DH Engelth Urena2-for-4, 2B (9), K
.196/.366/.315 in 183 PA.  After compiling a .242 SLG in April, he improved to .377 in May. It’s something.
RF Luis Durango1-for-4, 2B (3), RBI, R, SB (18)
Durango is hitting .326 and has 18 stolen bases in 26 games.
1B John Cristino0-for-2, R, HBP, BB

RHP Brennan Stuprich (W, 2-0): 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
2.95 ERA (18.1 IP, 13 H, 9 R, 6 ER, 3 HR, 3 BB, 20 K). This is his debut campaign, and you have to like that K/BB.
RHP Jose Martinez2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
2.35 ERA (23 IP, 22 H, 10 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 9 BB, 26 K). The 21-year-old Cuban has pitched well throughout his brief professional career.
LHP Pedro Rodriguez1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
4.30 ERA (14.2 IP, 12 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 21 K).  Six of those runs were allowed in one appearance.
RHP Josh Tiedemann1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
