Yankees MILB 5/28: Dax Kilby (Finally) Returns

Top 30 Prospects

Injury Log

Notes:

Dax Kilby, who has been out of action all season, started a rehab assignment in the FCL today.

Kilby captured a lot of attention in 2025. After the Yankees selected him with their first-round pick (moved down ten slots), he hit .353/.457/.441 in 81 plate appearances for Tampa. In 18 games, he went 16-for-17 stealing bases and walked more than he struck out (13-11). Scouts seem to believe that he isn’t a long-term shortstop, but there is talk that he is athletic enough to be a center fielder.  Scouts have been wrong before, and the Yankees continue to play him at shortstop.

Scranton (26-26) (Lost to Worcester, 1-0. They didn’t really face anyone noteworthy (other than Tommy Kahnle at the end), but managed only one hit)

SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-4, 4 K
Lombard has a pair of 4-strikeout efforts in his last five games (also has a pair of games without a strikeout).
RF Spencer Jones0-for-4, 4 K
Since demotion: 1-for-10, HR, 2 BB, 7 K
3B Oswaldo Cabrera0-for-4, 2 K
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-3
Since promotion: 1-for-18.
DH Ernesto Martinez Jr.1-for-3, SB (4), K
C Ali Sanchez0-for-3, 2 K
2B Jonathan Ornelas0-for-3
CF Duke Ellis0-for-3, K
LF Kenedy Corona0-for-1, BB

RHP Carlos Lagrange: (L, 0-3) 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, HR
4.41 ERA (49 IP, 40 H, 25 R, 24 ER, 8 HR, 25 BB, 63 K).  Lagrange didn’t hit 100 MPH tonight (topped at 99.8 MPH), which is more of a fun anecdote than something to be concerned about.  Yes, the eight home runs stand out, as Lagrange allowed eight in 120 innings last season.
RHP Carson Coleman1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Peter Strzelecki1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
This is his organizational debut.  The 31-year-old has some MLB success on his resume (3.44 ERA in 77 career games).
RHP Kervin Castro1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Somerset (24-24) (Lost to New Hampshire, 14-2. They are 1-2 during this important 6-game series)

DH Jace Avina2-for-4, HR (13), 2 RBI, R, K
Avina has a 26-game on-base streak.  He has nine home runs during the streak.
CF Garrett Martin0-for-3, BB, 2 K
Martin’s 7-game hitting streak is snapped.
1B Nicholas Torres1-for-2
   2B Santiago Gomez0-for-2, K
3B-1B Coby Morales0-for-4, K
RF DJ Gladney0-for-4, 3 K
LF Jackson Castillo1-for-3, R, BB, K
.274/.374/.372 in 131 PA. He has a solid 11.5% BB/21.4% K and is on a 5-game hitting streak.
C Abrahan Gutierrez0-for-4
SS Owen Cobb0-for-3, 2 K
2B-3B Kevin Verde1-for-3, K

LHP Xavier Rivas: (L, 2-3)  4.1 IP, 11 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 5 HR
5 HR? Is he the second coming of Chase Wright?  Seriously though, OOF. This is the type of game you have to throw away in your brain. His ERA spiked from 4.61 to 7.11.  Before the season, I mentioned the fear of a pitcher not known for velocity pitching in the upper minors. He is missing bats (48 K in 31.2 IP) but has also allowed nine home runs.
RHP Hayden Merda1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
2.11 ERA (21.1 IP, 15 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 7 BB, 37 K). The strikeout rate is insane, but the first thing I notice is the reduction in walk rate. Merda was a starter in 2023, missed all of 2024, and returned as a reliever in 2025.
RHP Kelly Austin1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Michael Arias1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
LHP Will Brian0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Brian’s shaky May continues (9.58 ERA in 10.1 innings)

Hudson Valley (22-25) (Outhit Bowling Green, 9-7)

2B Kaeden Kent2-for-5, 2B (9), R, K
.290/.356/.410 in 202 PA. Hopefully this gets him back on track.
SS Core Jackson: 3-for-4, 2 HR (4), 3 RBI, 2 R
Jackson hadn’t homered since April 11th (missed 2.5 weeks to injury during that stretch). He is hitting .259/.360/.431 in 138 plate appearances and has six 3+ hit contests. Jackson has a strong defensive reputation, so if he develops any offensive game, he becomes an interesting prospect.
DH Eric Genther0-for-5
1B Kyle West3-for-4, R, K
RF Wilson Rodriguez2-for-4, R, K
We are seeing nice growth from Rodriguez this month. Remember that he doesn’t turn 22 until the end of the season.
3B Roderick Arias1-for-4, R, K
C Josue Gonzalez2-for-3, 2 R, BB
.206/.350/.423 in 120 PA. He’s done a nice job following a 2-for-21 start.
CF Camden Troyer1-for-4, 2 RBI, K
Troyer has a 6-game hitting streak.
LF Josh Moylan2-for-4, 2B (5), HR (5), 3 RBI, R
Moylan has been hot lately: 9-for-18 with a double, triple, and two home runs in his last five games.

LHP Allen Facundo6 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
Since promotion: 6.04 ERA (25.1 IP, 17 H, 17 R, 17 ER, 2 HR, 17 BB, 35 K).
RHP Jack Sokol1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
1.23 ERA (14.2 IP, 11 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 17 K)
RHP Brandon Decker: (W, 3-0) 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Andrew Landry (S, 1):  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Landry’s first career save.  He owns a 3.12 ERA in 17.1 innings at this level (allowed four runs in 2.2 innings in one appearance for Somerset).

Tampa (23-23)

Their game against Daytona was postponed. They will attempt to play two tomorrow.

FCL Yankees (10-9) (Defeated the Tigers, 2-1. This game was as clean as you will get in the FCL – neither team committed an error.)

SS Dax Kilby0-for-2, K
   1B Justin Capellan2-for-2, R, CS (1)
1B-3B Richard Matic1-for-4, CS (3), 2 K
Matic is on a 5-game hitting streak (8-for-19; 2 doubles, 2 HR)
RF Wilberson De Pena3-for-4, HR (6), 2 RBI, R, 2 SB (11), K
De Pena is dominating this league. He is hitting .392/.451/.743 (6 doubles, 1 triple, 6 HR, 27 RBI) in 18 games (82 plate appearances). He has reached base safely in 17 of those games, including at least one hit in 15 contests.
C Queni Pineda1-for-2, 2 BB, K
.232/.436/.339 in 78 PA. Rookie League walk rates can be deceiving, but Pineda has shown good discipline nevertheless (23.5% career rate in 336 PA).  Hey, I am looking for any signs of life in the catching pipeline.
3B-2B Leni Done0-for-4, CS (2)
DH David McCann1-for-3, SB (1), 2 K
2B-SS Dexters Peralta0-for-3, 2 K
LF Estivenzon Montero1-for-3, 2B (4), K
CF Isael Arias0-for-3, K

RHP Alexander Cornielle2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Cornielle’s second rehab start.
RHP Manuel Cruz (W, 1-0): 5.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Cruz’s first career win (went 0-5 in the DSL in 2025). This was his longest career outing.
RHP Edinzo Marquez (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Down here on a rehab stint, Marquez earns his first career save.
