Yankees MILB 5/21: Rory Fox Tosses Shutout

Top 30 Prospects

Injury Log

LHP Tanner Bauman was moved from Hudson Valley to Somerset. This may have been a “need an arm” move, as Bauman wasn’t pitching well in Hudson Valley.

SS Christofer Reyes was transferred from the DSL to the FCL. The 18-year-old signed for $100,000 in 2024. In two DSL seasons, he didn’t perform at a high level (.247/.343/.321), though he did steal 47 bases in 62 attempts.

The Yankees have a pair of moves to make. Since he was used in back-to-back games, I assume Yovanny Cruz will go down for Gerrit ColeThe more interesting decision is whether Anthony Volpe will head back to Scranton, with Jose Caballero returning. The only other option is Max SchuemannIf Caballero is the everyday shortstop, the sensible move is for Volpe to head back down.

I will say it again – nobody in the minors is coming up to help the offense. And who knows when Giancarlo Stanton will come back? Spencer Jones‘ struggles don’t surprise me.  He was one of the few to earn a hit tonight, but 4-for-24 with 12 strikeouts isn’t making anyone feel confident. It is what it is.

Scranton (25-21) (Defeated Lehigh Valley, 8-7. I will say it is interesting that they promoted Eric Reyzelman but have yet to use him)

SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-4, R, BB, 2 K

Somerset (20-22) (Squeaked past Chesapeake, 2-1)

CF Jace Avina0-for-3, 2 BB, K
.250/.335/.559 in 173 PA. His BB% is up to 10.4. As stated, strikeouts are an issue with him, but he has shown the ability to draw some walks.
DH Garrett Martin: 2-for-4, HR (14), 2 RBI, R, BB, K
Martin ties his personal best for home runs (14 in 38 games this year; 14 in 102 games last year). He is hitting .270/.331/.572 in 175 PA.

4.61 ERA (27.1 IP, 18 H, 16 R, 14 ER, 4 HR, 17 BB, 43 K).  Rivas can miss bats (156 career strikeouts in 112.2 innings) though his walk totals keep him from going deep into games.
LHP Tanner Bauman: (W, 1-0)  2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Bauman may be back in Hudson Valley quickly, but he did his job tonight.
RHP Michael Arias2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Kelly Austin (S, 1): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (21-21) (Swept a doubleheader over Brooklyn)

Game 1 (Won, 7-3)

SS Kaeden Kent2-for-4, 3B (2), RBI, R
LF Wilson Rodriguez: 0-for-3, R, BB, K
DH Eric Genther1-for-3, R, HBP

2B Enmanuel Tejeda1-for-3, RBI, SB (3)
3B Roderick Arias2-for-2, R, BB
C Josue Gonzalez1-for-3, HR (5), 2 RBI, R
If Gonzalez can develop a hit tool, he becomes interesting. He is flashing power (4 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs in 26 games) but is hitting only .205. The .218 BABIP doesn’t help matters.
CF Camden Troyer0-for-3
RF Cole Gabrielson0-for-2, R, BB

LHP Allen Facundo (W, 1-2): 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 13 K, HR

RHP Tony Rossi1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
1.17 ERA (15.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 23 K). Rossi has allowed a ridiculous 22 hits in 60.2 career innings.
RHP Thomas Balboni Jr.: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Game 2 (Won, 7-0)

SS Kaeden Kent1-for-3, R, SB (14), BB, K
.299/.372/.427 in 183 PA (8 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR, 22 RBI, 29 R, 12-for-13 SB). Solid sophomore campaign.

CF Camden Troyer1-for-4, HR (4), 2 RBI, 2 R
RF Cole Gabrielson0-for-2, BB, K

RHP Rory Fox7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K
5.65 ERA (36.2 IP, 35 H, 27 R, 23 ER, 5 HR, 13 BB, 44 K). He’s had his ups and downs during his debut campaign, but his last three starts have been encouraging.

Tampa (20-22) (Defeated Clearwater, 11-2)

SS Jackson Lovich1-for-4, 2B (9), RBI, 2 R, BB
Including his 26 plate appearances at this level last year, he is hitting .359/.440/.693 (13 doubles, 4 triples, 10 HR, 39 RBI, 38 R, 13-for-15 SB, 11.4% BB, 26.3% K). Additionally, he is 24-for-61 (.393) with 7 home runs and 20 RBI in May. Methinks Hudson Valley is calling his name.
3B Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek3-for-5, HR (3), 2 RBI, 3 R
.264/.374/.364 in 155 PA. He is on a 6-game hitting streak (first multi-hit game during the streak).
1B Hans Montero2-for-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, 2 R, BB, K
LF Luis Puello2-for-5, HR (2), RBI, R, 2 K

C Engelth Urena1-for-3, 2 BB, K
RF JoJo Jackson0-for-3, BB
DH Ediel Rivera1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, R
Rivera hit two home runs in 66 games last year (zero in 18 games at this level).

RHP J.T. Etheridge: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
4.66 ERA (19.1 IP, 18 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 27 K)
RHP Jordarlin Mendoza (W, 1-2): 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Mendoza, who has a nice (but raw) arm, has three straight scoreless appearances (4.1 innings). That has lowered his ERA to 12.00. As I said, nice (BUT RAW) arm.
RHP Josh Tiedemann2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Jose Ledesma1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

FCL Yankees (7-7) (Lost to the Tigers, 13-5)

3B Richard Matic0-for-3, R, BB, 2 K
RF Wilberson De Pena2-for-4, 2B (5), RBI
.370/.433/.667 in 60 dominant plate appearances. He has a 7-game hitting streak (11-for-29; 1 double, 2 HR).
C Queni Pineda2-for-4, HR (2), RBI, 2 R, K
The 18-year-old has shown some pop (13 doubles, 8 HR in 76 career games) and has more career walks (73) than strikeouts (68).
2B Leni Done1-for-1, HR (2), 2 RBI, R, SB (8), CS (1), 2 BB
Done is doing what he needs to do to stay on the radar. The 18-year-old is hitting .353/.435/.529 with a double, a triple, two home runs, and 16 RBI in 62 plate appearances. He has played mostly second and third base with a game at shortstop.

  PH Kevin Verde0-for-1

RHP Alexander Cornielle (L, 0-1): 1.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Cornielle begins his rehab stint. The 24-year-old spent the 2025 season in the Brewers’ organization, pitching to a 3.81 ERA in 29 starts (137 innings) between Double-A and Triple-A. In those 137 innings, he owned a 135/71 K/BB.
RHP Diego Flores0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Flores is a catcher (though he hasn’t played at all in 2026). They used him as a “bridge” between two rehabbing pitchers tonight, which is hilarious.
RHP Luis Velasquez1.1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Before today, Velasquez last pitched in 2024. That year, pitching for Somerset, he pitched to a 4.57 ERA in 30 games (2 starts) with a 56/31 K/BB over 41.1 innings. He had a strong campaign between Tampa and Hudson Valley in 2023.
RHP Manuel Cruz1.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
LHP Marco Manzano2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
