Notes:
Hoping for the best for Max Fried, though I don’t think his best-case scenario (making his next start) is a realistic best-case scenario.
Gerrit Cole needs two more rehab starts before his return. I doubt the Yankees would move up his timetable. If Fried misses a few starts, we are looking at Elmer Rodriguez again. Like everyone reading this, I would love to see Carlos Lagrange throw 103 MPH fastballs and 100 MPH sinkers at MLB hitters. It would require a 40-man roster move, and I doubt they feel a need. Rodriguez is supposed to be good, too, after all.
Scranton (21-18) (Shut down Syracuse, 7-0)
SS George Lombard Jr.: 0-for-5, K
A perfectly normal .146/.407/.146 triple slash since his promotion. Ridiculous. The hits and power will come.
1B Seth Brown: 1-for-5
2B Marco Luciano: 1-for-3, 2B (1), R, BB
Luciano is 4-for-15 since his promotion. He has 20 extra-base hits (10 doubles, 10 HR) between here and Somerset.
3B Oswaldo Cabrera: 2-for-4, RBI, R, K
.215/.285/.323 in 144 PA. He is 14-for-43 (.326) with five multi-hit efforts in May.
DH Ernesto Martínez Jr.: 1-for-4, R, K
C Ali Sanchez: 1-for-4, R
LF Jonathan Ornelas: 2-for-3, 2B (3), 2 RBI, R, BB
.333/.400/.506 in 90 PA. He has played 2B/SS/3B/LF.
CF Duke Ellis: 1-for-4, R, K
RF Kenedy Corona: 1-for-4, HR (1, GS), 4 RBI, R, K
Corona is 3-for-20 since his promotion. At least hit #3 was meaningful.
RHP Brendan Beck: (W, 3-2) 5.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K
This is the fourth time he has struck out nine in a game. He’s never reached ten. Season: 4.43 ERA (42.2 IP, 35 H, 25 R, 21 ER, 7 HR, 9 BB, 46 K). He’s unlikely to strike out hitters at this rate in the majors, so to maintain a career, he will need to keep the walks down.
RHP Bradley Hanner: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
1.86 ERA (19.1 IP, 16 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 28 K).
RHP Kervin Castro: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Somerset (16-19) (Lost to Binghamton, 5-4)
LF Jace Avina: 1-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB
.246/.314/.532 in 140 PA (9 doubles, 9 HR, 26 RBI, 25 R, 3-for-3 SB, 8.6% BB, 31.4% K). Correct, this isn’t ideal for a leadoff hitter. We all know minor league lineups aren’t always made with “making sense” in mind.
CF Garrett Martin: 2-for-5, 2B (4), RBI
.262/.322/.546 in 143 PA (4 doubles, 11 HR, 23 RBI, 24 R, 6-for-9 SB, 6.3% BB, 20.3% K)
DH Jackson Castillo: 1-for-3, HBP, BB
.328/.442/.422 in 77 PA with a 15.6% BB and 18.2% K.
3B Tyler Hardman: 0-for-4, K
1B Coby Morales: 0-for-4, RBI, 2 K
After a crazy hot start, Morales is in a 3-for-27 slump.
RF DJ Gladney: 0-for-4, 3 K
Gladney’s first game since May 6th. He was hot at the time (6-game hitting streak that featured two doubles and two home runs).
2B Connor McGinnis: 0-for-4, 2 K
C Miguel Palma: 0-for-3, R, BB
SS Owen Cobb: 3-for-4, 2B (4), HR (2), 2 RBI, R
Cobb is receiving semi-regular playing time this season (22 of 34 games) and is hitting well: .297/.338/.453 with 16 RBI in 72 plate appearances. He can play 2B/SS/3B.
RHP Cade Smith: (L, 2-2) 5.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 2 HR
5.16 ERA (29.2 IP, 31 H, 17 R, 17 ER, 8 HR, 11 BB, 32 K). Smith allowed eight home runs over 133.1 innings entering 2026.
RHP Ben Grable: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Since promotion: 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. Overall: 1.38 ERA (13 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 24 K). This is his first year, and what an impression he is making. A trip to Scranton is not out of the question. I expect it.
RHP Eric Reyzelman: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
3.45 ERA (15.2 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 4 BB, 29 K). It’s all about the walks. Reyzelman had a .182 BAA last year, but the walks crushed him (1.62 WHIP). This year, the BAA is .161, and the WHIP is 0.83. Yes, last year was spent in Scranton, but that wouldn’t explain everything. One would suspect he will get back to Triple-A soon enough.
RHP Kelly Austin: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Hudson Valley (18-16) (Lost to Frederick, 5-4. They allowed three runs in the top of the 9th)
SS Kaeden Kent: 0-for-5, 2 K
A 1-for-14 slump has reduced his triple slash from .345/.418/.504 to .316/.385/.459.
C Eric Genther: 1-for-4, 2B (4), R, BB, K
.232/.398/.295 in 124 PA. He was hitting well early in the year, but is 4-for-31 in May.
DH Kyle West: 0-for-4, BB, 3 K
RF Wilson Rodriguez: 1-for-3, R, SB (7), 2 BB
.221/.359/.337 in 135 PA (7 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 21 R, 7-for-9 SB, 17.0% BB, 19.3% K). His ability to take walks has allowed him to reach base in 27 of his 31 games.
3B Roderick Arias: 1-for-3, SB (12), R, BB
2B Enmanuel Tejeda: 1-for-4, HR (1), 3 RBI, R, K
Tejeda extends his on-base streak to 28. This is his third HR between here and Tampa. His personal best is five, done in 2023. It should be noted that Tejeda has never played more than 50 games in a season. He spent most of 2022 – 2024 in the rookie leagues and was injured for most of 2025.
1B Josh Moylan: 0-for-4, 2 K
CF Camden Troyer: 1-for-3, SB (4), BB, K
LF Cole Gabrielson: 2-for-2, 2B (2), CS (5), 2 BB
RHP Luis Serna: 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K
Serna continues to be one of the early-season surprises. He owns a 1.91 ERA in 33 innings (18 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 0 HR, 13 BB, 39 K). Due to injury, he threw only seven innings in 2025 after compiling a 6.07 ERA in 69.2 innings in 2024 (he also spent time on the injured list that year). He’s always had talent, but he fell off prospect radars for obvious reasons. Is he back? Time will tell.
RHP Tony Rossi: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
1.35 ERA (13.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 21 K). Rossi still hasn’t allowed a home run in his career (58.2 innings). Additionally, he has allowed only 21 hits in those 58.2 innings.
RHP Chris Veach: (L, 2-1) 0.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
A big Roderick Arias error opened the floodgates in the 9th. Veach, who has been dominant all season, wasn’t able to work around it. It happens. Season: 0.69 ERA (13 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 3 BB, 22 K). Yes, today’s three runs allowed were the first he has allowed this season.
RHP Brady Kirtner: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Tampa (17-18) (Powered and ran their way to an 8-5 win over Dunedin)
SS Jackson Lovich: 1-for-5, HR (4), 2 RBI, R, 2 K
Lovich has a 9-game hitting streak (14-for-38; 2 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home run). He has played ten games at shortstop, nine at third base, and one at first base. The bat potential is real, though it’s harder to figure out what his future position may be.
2B Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek: 3-for-3, HR (2), RBI, R, 3 SB (10), CS (2), 2 BB
Lovich and Martin-Grudzielanek went back-to-back. This home run went 391 feet at 105.3 MPH. He is 16-for-19 stealing bases in 53 career games.
1B Hans Montero: 2-for-5, 3B (4), HR (1), RBI, R, 2 K
He sent a personal best with ten home runs in 89 games at this level in 2025.
RF Willy Montero: 0-for-5, 2 K
C Luis Puello: 1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, R, BB, 2 K
It was the full-season league debut for the 20-year-old, and he made an early impression. He spent 3+ years in the rookie leagues, hitting .276/.367/.414 with 16 doubles and 9 home runs in 409 plate appearances.
DH Engelth Urena: 0-for-1, 3 R, HBP, 2 BB, K
CF Luis Durango: 2-for-4, 2 SB (10), CS (4)
Durango has hit safely in 11 of his 12 rehab games. He is hitting .354 (17-for-48).
LF Gabriel Lara: 0-for-2, R, 2 BB
2B Santiago Gomez: 1-for-1, SF, 3 RBI, SB (4), 2 BB
LHP Justin West: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, HR
6.98 ERA (29.2 IP, 38 H, 25 R, 23 ER, 4 HR, 14 BB, 41 K).
RHP Brian Arias: (W, 1-3) 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Bryce Warrecker: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Greysen Carter: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
4.32 ERA (16.2 IP, 12 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 16 BB, 22 K). He reached 100.9 MPH.
RHP Josh Tiedemann: (S, 4) 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
FCL Yankees (5-3)
Day off.
