Yankees MILB 4/3: George Lombard Jr. Goes Crazy

Top 30 Prospects

Injury Log  (Plenty of additions now that rosters are finalized)

Notes:

Dax Kilby will begin his campaign on the 7-day injured list. Many people are anxious to see what he can do in his first full season of professional ball, but his debut will need to wait.  Fellow 2025 draftee Jackson Lovich will also begin his campaign on the injured list.

Scranton (4-3) (Swept a doubleheader against Rochester)

Game 1 (Won, 4-2)

SS Oswaldo Cabrera1-for-4, RBI, SB (1), K
CF Max Schuemann1-for-3, 2B (2), HBP, 2 K
2B Paul DeJong1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, BB, 2 K
RF Yanquiel Fernandez1-for-4, HR (3), RBI, R, K
This is the appetizer for what he did in Game 2.
DH Seth Brown2-for-4, R
Brown’s organizational debut. In 294 games between 2019 and 2022, he hit .229/.298/.454 (111 wRC+) with 45 home runs over 950 plate appearances for the Athletics. However, his career has gone downhill since, and he offers no defensive value.
C Ali Sanchez3-for-4, R
1B Ernesto Martinez Jr.1-for-4, K
3B Jonathan Ornelas2-for-4, K
LF Duke Ellis1-for-4, RBI, K

RHP Carlos Lagrange3.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, HR
We all know that Lagrange’s control can sometimes escape him (62 walks in 120 innings in 2025). Savant indicates he averaged 98.8 MPH with his fastball, topping out at 101.
RHP Zach Messinger (W, 1-0): 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
His hard 4-seam/sinker combination is interesting. Furthermore, as a former starter, he can give you multiple innings.
RHP Yovanny Cruz (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
If the Yankees can find the magic formula that cuts down his walk rates, he can become a weapon this year. As they say, easier said than done.  He hit 101+ MPH three times today.

Game 2 (Won convincingly, 17-4)

LF Jasson Dominguez3-for-3, 2B (1), HR (2), RBI, 4 R, SB (2), 2 BB
For the second time this season, Dominguez leads off a game with a home run. He is 8-for-20 with a double, two homers, three walks, and a pair of stolen bases. In 58 career Triple-A games, he is hitting .332/.399/.518. He has nothing to prove here, and the Yankees will need to find a way to keep him motivated beyond working on his defense.
SS Max Schuemann0-for-3, RBI, 2 R, 2 BB, K
CF Spencer Jones2-for-5, 2 2B (3), 2 RBI, 2 R, 3 K
As I said on Opening Day, “Extra Base Hits and Strikeouts” can be the title of his autobiography.
RF Yanquiel Fernandez3-for-4, 2B (1), 2 HR (5), 6 RBI, 3 R, BB, K
My goodness. Fernandez hits three home runs in 14 innings today and has five in seven games (that’s how you earn an .889 SLG). As stated before, he has a Top 100 Prospect pedigree and is only 23 years old.  This is the second time he has driven home six runs in a game (August 11, 2022).
DH Seth Brown1-for-4, RBI, R, BB, K
  3B Paul DeJong0-for-0
1B Ernesto Martinez Jr.2-for-4, 2B (2), HR (1), 4 RBI, R, BB, K
A nice 8-for-26 start that includes two doubles, a triple, and a home run.
C Payton Henry0-for-4, BB, K
3B-P Braden Shewmake0-for-3, R, HBP, K
2B Jonathan Ornelas3-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, 3 R
There was a time when the 25-year-old had offense in his profile. It hasn’t shown up in years, though.

RHP Adam Kloffenstein3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Organizational debut for the 25-year-old. The Yankees signed him to a minor league contract over the winter, and he has appeared in one MLB game (Cardinals in 2024, where he tossed a scoreless inning). He featured a 5-pitch mix today, throwing his sinker 46% of the time.
RHP Bradley Hanner (W, 1-0): 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Danny Watson1.2 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
The line isn’t great, but he did generate 11 whiffs.
RHP Braden Shewmake0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Somerset (1-0) (Mauled Portland, 18-2)

SS George Lombard Jr.: 5-for-6, 2B (1), HR (1), RBI, 3 R, SB (1)
Like Dominguez, Lombard Jr. leads off the game with a home run.  This is his first career five-hit game. While the numbers suggest he “struggled” here in 2025, his wRC+ was decent for a young player at this level. The potential is there for him to be an impact player. I do not do “ETA” because the prospects determine their ETAs, not prospect writers.
LF Jace Avina1-for-5, 2B (1), 2 RBI, 2 R, BB, 2 K
Avina has reached double digits in home runs in each of his four minor league campaigns.
RF Garrett Martin: 2-for-5, HR (1), RBI, 3 R, HBP, K
Martin (25) is repeating the level. He hit .222/.292/.389 with 14 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 102 games last year.
2B Marco Luciano: 4-for-5, 2B (1), RBI, 4 R, SB (1), BB, K
The 24-year-old makes his organizational debut. This is one way to make a first impression.  The Yankees claimed him off waivers this winter. They eventually needed to designate him for assignment, but nobody claimed him. He hit .214/.335/.413 in 125 games for Triple-A Sacramento in 2025.
1B Coby Morales: 2-for-4, 2 HR (2), SF, 6 RBI, 3 R, BB, 2 K
He was promoted here last year and didn’t homer in 26 games. He made up for that tonight, eh? It’s his second career multi-home run game and he tied his best for RBI in a game.
3B Tyler Hardman: 4-for-5, 2B (1), HR (1), 4 RBI, R, BB
Now 27, Hardman hasn’t been able to repeat his pre-injury success from 2023.  He hit .237/.332/.558 with 26 home runs in 77 games at this level that year. That said, some of his SLG returned in 2025 (20 HR, .458 SLG in 115 games).
DH Nicholas Torres: 3-for-5, 2 RBI, SB (1), K
Torres was signed by the Yankees after winning the MVP Award in the Mexican League.  That award was certainly earned, as he hit .347/.425/.730 with 27 home runs in 372 plate appearances.
CF Kenedy Corona1-for-5, K
Signed to a minor league deal over the winter, Corona made his MLB debut for the Astros in 2025. He went 0-for-2 with three walks in two games.
C Miguel Palma0-for-4, R, BB
Also out of the Astros organization, the 24-year-old hit .155/.264/.264 in 41 games between Double-A and Triple-A in 2025. As stated, the Yankees need catchers. You aren’t typically going to find great ones in minor league free agency.  That said, they have a good track record of working with catchers, and perhaps they can turn one of these kids into something useful.

RHP Ben Hess (W, 1-0): 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K, HR
Hess started the game with seven straight strikeouts. The first-round pick in the 2024 draft is a legitimate talent who can be ready as early this year, though the Yankees are hoping they don’t need him.  By the way, we don’t get Savant data in Double-A, so I can’t report much beyond the fact that he generated 13 whiffs.
RHP Bailey Dees2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
The 6’8″ Dees was given a shot as a starter in 2024 and part of 2025, but was ultimately moved back to the pen.
RHP Eric Reyzelman1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Getting Reyzelman, once their top relief prospect, back on track is a goal this year. He had a rough year in Scranton last season.
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
In 31 games between Hudson Valley and Somerset last year, he compiled a 2.47 ERA in 43.2 innings with a 63/22 K/BB.

Hudson Valley (1-0) (Defeated Brooklyn, 3-1)

SS Core Jackson0-for-4, R, SB (1), BB, K
2B Kaeden Kent: 1-for-3, 2B (1), R, SB (1), 2 BB, 2 K
The Yankees debuted Kent at this level in 2025, and he predictably struggled. Jeff Kent‘s son has legitimate prospect value.
1B Kyle West1-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, 2 SB (2), BB
The 13th-round pick in the 2025 draft went 9-for-36 with a pair of doubles and three RBI in Tampa.
RF Wilson Rodriguez1-for-2, R, CS (1), 3 BB, K
The 21-year-old is on some Yankees’ prospect lists (including Pipeline). After being promoted to Tampa last year, he hit .237/.342/.392 with five doubles, two triples, and two home runs in 30 games.
DH Eric Genther0-for-4, 3 K
Signed as an undrafted free agent last year, Genther hit .256/.448/.419 with a home run and more walks (10) than strikeouts (7) in 17 games for Tampa.
3B Roderick Arias: 2-for-3, CS (1), BB, K
Arias’ High-A debut. He didn’t do much in Tampa to “earn” his spot here, but you can’t keep him in Low-A ball forever.
LF Josh Moylan0-for-3, SF, RBI, 3 K
Moylan was sought after as a non-drafted free agent a few years ago but has yet to translate that into professional production. This is his third season at this level.
  LF Cole Gabrielson0-for-0
CF Camden Troyer1-for-4, K
Last year’s 12th-round pick out of Liberty hit .253/.356/.320 in 22 games for Tampa.
C Josue Gonzalez0-for-4, K
The 22-year-old had a big season in 2023, hitting .324/.517/.529 in 33 games. The problem? That was in the DSL, and his career has tumbled ever since. The Yankees need catching. A good year from Gonzalez would be useful.

LHP Pico Kohn: (W, 1-0) 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, HR
Impressive professional debut for last year’s 4th round pick (Mississippi State). He will be interesting to watch as he already owns some “polish.”
RHP Chris Veach1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Veach pitched well for Tampa last year, compiling a 2.53 ERA and 75/29 K/BB over 57 innings in his professional debut.
RHP Tony Rossi1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Some sites have Rossi at the bottom of the Yankees’ Top 30 lists. He was impressive during his debut campaign, compiling a 2.18 ERA in 45.1 innings with a 64/26 K/BB.  That said, he is 26 years old.
RHP Ben Grable (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Grable, their 11th-round pick in 2025, earns a save in his professional debut.

Tampa (0-1) (Lost to Lakeland, 12-7)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-5, RBI, SB (1), 2 K
The 20-year-old is a bonus baby who dealt with injuries during his three-year stint in the rookie leagues (one with the DSL, two in the FCL). In 93 games, he performed well (.282/.376/.393), so we’ll see what he can do in a full-season league.
3B Enmanuel Tejeda0-for-1, R, SB (1), 4 BB, K
After tonight, Tejeda has 132 walks and 135 strikeouts in 189 minor league games. He won’t hit for much power, so his ability to make contact and take some walks is what will carry him (or not).
C Engelth Urena0-for-4, R, BB, K
The Yankees’ top catching prospect is known for his raw power. While he hit only nine home runs in 113 games last year, catchers can take time to click.
SS Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek1-for-4, 2B (1), 2 R, SB (1), BB, 2 K
Like Kent, Martin-Grudzielanek is the son of a former MLB player. He was their 20th-round pick in the 2025 draft out of USC.
DH JoJo Jackson2-for-5, 2B (1), 3 RBI, SB (1), K
Drafted in the 17th round in 2024, Jackson only had 12 games of professional experience before tonight. Tonight’s double is his first professional extra-base hit.
LF Logan Maxwell0-for-4, R, SB (1), K
Maxwell (23) makes his professional debut. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent last year out of Arkansas. He spent one year playing for the Razorbacks after playing three seasons for TCU. He hit .356/.454/.605 with 13 home runs in 51 games last year.
RF Willy Montero0-for-4, K
Surprisingly, Montero is still only 21. I have been writing about him forever. He played 45 games at this level in 2025, compiling a .271/.324/.329 triple slash.
1B Hans Montero2-for-3, RBI, R, BB, K
No relation to Willy that I know of. He played fairly well at this level in 2025, but it was his second year here.
2B Austin Green0-for-3, R, HBP, K
The 23-year-old switch-hitter was drafted in the 14th round in 2024 out of Texas Tech. His bat has yet to click.

LHP Justin West (L, 0-1): 2.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Not the professional debut the 22-year-old out of Louisville wanted. Looking at the data, he is a kitchen sink type lefty.
RHP Greysen Carter: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 6 BB, 3 K
This outing defines Carter, who throws extremely hard (can push it over 100 MPH) but has no idea where it is going. In his 2025 debut season, he struck out 49 and walked 67 (not a typo – do the old TikTok trend if you wish) over 54.2 innings.
RHP Benjamin Arias1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
The Yankees signed Arias to a minor league contract recently. In 2025, he posted a 3.67 ERA in 56.1 innings for High-A Peoria (Cardinals).  Seems that he is your prototypical fastball/slider type of reliever. He hit 95 MPH with the fastball.
RHP Matthew Tippie2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
Professional debut for the 22-year-old out of Texas State. The Yankees signed him as a non-drafted free agent, and I never heard of him before writing this.  One of his pitches registered as “Unknown,” which tells me it is the most devastating pitch ever invented.
RHP Josh Tiedemann2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
Drafted out of high school in 2023, Tiedemann hasn’t been able to “find” it yet. This is a good way to start 2026, though.
