Midseason Review/New Top 30 Prospects
Notes:
The Yankees have added Mitch Garver to their catching depth. He will join Christian Bethancourt and J.C. Escarra in Scranton.
Garver has two connections to the Yankees. First, he has experience with Yankees’ catching coordinator Tanner Swanson during their time in Minnesota. Second, he played a role in the 2022 trade that brought Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the Bronx. Before the Twins flipped Kiner-Falefa to the Yankees, they had to trade for him. It was Garver they sent to Texas.
Garver was once a solid offensive catcher. In 2023, as a member of the Rangers, he hit .270/.370/.500 with 19 home runs in 344 PA. While he didn’t hit well in the World Series that year (.105/.227/.263), he did contribute a home run. From 2018 through 2023 overall, he hit .254/.343/.488 (126 wRC+). Before the 2024 campaign, he signed a 2-year, $23 million deal with the Mariners (he signed a 1-year, $1 million contract with the Mariners before 2026). With the Mariners, his offense crashed. He hit only .185/.292/.333 (87 wRC+) in 869 PA.
The catching situation remains unsettled and uninspiring. Maybe they will do something for 2027. For now, they hope someone gets hot for a few months. Yay.

Niu has a solid professional debut. The Yankees signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Arkansas, where he hit .274/.347/.479 with ten home runs and 19 stolen bases in 2026. Before Arkansas, he played collegiately for New Orleans and Marshall.

Troyer hit .333/.394/.413 (21-for-63) in July.

On April 3rd, Kohn impressed in his professional debut (5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K). He injured himself that night and didn’t start again until tonight. Hence, the results mean nothing. He was their 4th round pick in the 2025 draft and is a Top 30 prospect in the system.
