Yankees MILB 7/25: Jesus Rodriguez Extends Hitting Streak

Notes:

In case you missed it, here is my article on the Ryan McMahon transaction.

A day after hitting 1,200+ feet of home runs, OF Spencer Jones was out of tonight’s lineup due to back spasms. The Yankees are unlikely to mess with this, but as someone who has back spasms, I know how they can come and go. I am not a prized professional athlete though (I am not a prized anything), so I wouldn’t be shocked if he at least missed this weekend.

Injury Log

Scranton (57-39; 19-5 in second half) (Defeated Rochester, 7-5. July has been a good month for Scranton hitters.)

DH Jesus Rodriguez: 3-for-5, 3B (3), RBI, 2 R, SB (14), K
Rodriguez increases his hitting streak to 13 (18-for-54 (.333); 2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 14 R, 9 BB, 7 K)
LF Everson Pereira1-for-5, R, SB (9), K
Pereira is hitting .299/.405/.687 in July (3 doubles, 1 triple, 7 HR, 18 RBI, 20 R, 4-for-4 SB).
1B T.J. Rumfield2-for-3, 2B (26), SF, RBI, R, BB, K
.308/.392/.498 in 378 PA. Rumfield has gone crazy in July: 28-for-71 (.394/.471/.606; 9 doubles, 2 HR, 22 RBI, 15 R, 12 BB). He leads the organization in doubles (26) and RBI (67).  He is second in the International League in both categories.
C Rafael Flores1-for-4, RBI, BB, 3 K
Since promotion: 5-for-24 (1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R, 7 BB, 10 K).
3B Jeimer Candelario2-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, R, K
If Candelario hoped to get back to MLB this year, it likely won’t be with the Yankees now. He has four multi-hit efforts in his last seven games.
RF Bryan De La Cruz1-for-5, K
2B Nicky Lopez0-for-4
SS Braden Shewmake0-for-3, BB, K
   SS Andrew Velazquez0-for-0
CF Duke Ellis: 4-for-4, 3 2B (7), 2 R, 2 SB (16), CS (4)
Fun night from the #9 spot in the lineup.

RHP Erick Leal: (W, 6-7) 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K
5.50 ERA (86.2 IP, 79 H, 60 R, 53 ER, 21 HR, 35 BB, 96 K). The veteran has provided solid innings over his last five starts but is no threat to make it to MLB. He’s doing what he was signed to do in an organization that has a reputation for helping middling veteran pitchers.
LHP Jayvien Sandridge0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Baron Stuart1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Joel Kuhnel1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Since signing: 7.1 IP, 11 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 1 BB, 8 K
RHP Harrison Cohen0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Somerset (50-44; 15-10 in second half) (Lost to Erie, 5-4)

LF Brendan Jones0-for-4, K
SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-4, 2 K
The end of his 7-game hitting streak. He is hitting .207/.327/.332 in 278 PA since his promotion.
2B Roc Riggio2-for-3, HR (10), RBI, R, SB (7), BB
Since promotion: .261/.338/.551 in 154 PA (10 doubles, 10 HR, 26 RBI, 24 R, 7-for-10 SB, 7.8% BB, 23.4% K). The extra-base hits stand out (he has 17 HR and 32 extra-base hits overall in 58 games this season)
DH Dylan Jasso1-for-4, R
C Omar Martinez1-for-4, HR (3), RBI, R, K
Martinez has never hit for much average, but has flashed some pop and ability to take walks (though his walk rate has fallen since his promotion)
1B Tyler Hardman2-for-4, 3B (1), HR (15), 2 RBI, R, K
It’s nice to see Hardman launch home runs again. Maybe it gets him noticed by another organization. You think I am knocking the Yankees with that comment, but I’m not. Players like Hardman tend to get their chances with teams looking for cheap talent.
CF Cole Gabrielson0-for-4, 3 K
RF Cam Eden1-for-4, K
3B Max Burt1-for-4, 2B (9), K

LHP Brock Selvidge4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
At this level: 3.78 ERA (33.1 IP, 26 H, 15 R, 14 ER, 2 HR, 21 BB, 29 K). He started the season on the injured list, so he is likely still bouncing back. However, I think it is fair to point out that Selvidge has allowed 61 walks in 118 Double-A innings.
LHP Ryan Anderson2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Indigo Diaz1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Danny Watson (L, 1-4): 0.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Hudson Valley (55-36; 18-10 second half) (Defeated Rome, 3-0. They went with a bullpen game, and it worked perfectly)

CF Jackson Castillo2-for-4, R, K
.243/.341/.332 in 364 PA (14 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR, 41 RBI, 42 R, 18-for-19 SB, 12.1% BB, 20.1% K).
RF Coby Morales1-for-3, R, BB, K
Morales has a 5-game hitting streak.
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-4, HR (6), 3 RBI, R, K
His 3-run blast in the 6th inning accounted for the game’s only runs.  Colmenares has homered in back-to-back games.
1B Josh Moylan: 1-for-3, 2 K
Moylan is hitting .277/.404/.468 in July.
DH Manuel Palencia1-for-3
LF Kiko Romero0-for-3, 2 K
C John Cristino0-for-2, BB, 2 K
3B Brenny Escanio0-for-3, K

RHP Chris Kean2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
It feels like yesterday when I talked about the surplus of pitching at Hudson Valley. Now? Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and Carlos Lagrange are in Somerset, Bryce Cunningham is on the injured list, and Griffin Herring/Josh Grosz are off to pitch in the Rockies’ organization. That leaves Hudson Valley with three healthy starters: Ben Hess (who has been closely monitored since missing a month), Cade Smith (who has pitched in only two games due to injury), and Kyle Carr. They don’t make trades without a plan, though.
RHP Huey Morrill2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
0.26 ERA (34.2 IP, 13 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 27 K). He also made one appearance for Somerset earlier this season, a level I think he deserves an extended look at.
RHP Ocean Gabonia: (W, 3-2)  2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
3.16 ERA (25.2 IP, 24 H, 14 R, 9 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 25 K). Over his last 15.1 innings: 8 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 15 K
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert: (S, 2)  1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
2.28 ERA (27.2 IP, 21 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 42 K). Gilbert (24) has a 2.46 career ERA over 84 IP with a 110/42 K/BB.

Tampa (45-45; 9-16 in the second half) (Lost to Clearwater, 5-0. They only played seven innings after a long rain delay to start the evening. Tampa recorded only one hit)

2B Enmanuel Tejeda0-for-3
SS Roderick Arias1-for-3, K
C Engelth Urena0-for-3, K
3B Juan Matheus0-for-2, BB
DH Willy Montero0-for-2, K
RF Wilson Rodriguez0-for-2, 2 K
LF Tyler Wilson0-for-2
CF Marshall Toole0-for-2, K
1B Hans Montero0-for-1, CS (5), BB

RHP Cade Austin: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
Tampa also had to go with a bullpen game tonight. Season: 3.11 ERA (37.2 IP, 33 H, 20 R, 13 ER, 4 HR, 17 BB, 41 K)
LHP Tanner Bauman: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Jack Sokol: (L, 4-2) 0.2 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Chris Veach0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Jackson Fristoe1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
4.71 ERA (42 IP, 38 H, 26 R, 22 ER, 8 HR, 26 BB, 34 K).

FCL (28-30)

Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (15-23) (Squeaked past to the DSL Cardinals, 4-3)

CF Francisco Vilorio1-for-3, R, K
SS Mani Cedeno0-for-2, BB, K
.186/.370/.248 in 146 PA (3 doubles, 2 triples, 0 HR, 10 RBI, 28 R, 11-for-12 SB, 18.5% BB, 35.6% K).
3B Richard Matic0-for-2, R, BB, K
DH Justin Capellan0-for-2, RBI, R, BB
LF Estivenzon Montero1-for-3, HR (7), 3 RBI, R
Montero is within two of the DSL home run lead. He is hitting .288/.380/.538 in 121 plate appearances.
1B Diego Flores1-for-2, K

LHP Carlos De La Rosa3.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
The 17-year-old owns a 5.32 ERA in 22 innings (27 H, 15 R, 13 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 36 K). You have to love the strikeout and walk rates.
RHP Rafael Arias (W, 4-0): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
4.34 ERA (29 IP, 31 H, 17 R, 14 ER, 0 HR, 12 BB, 38 K)
LHP Luis Rodriguez (S, 3): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

DSL Bombers (21-17) (Mauled the DSL Rangers Blue, 16-6)

SS Stiven Marinez1-for-4, 2B (5), RBI, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Marinez is hitting .250/.430/.313 in 151 PA (5 doubles, 1 triple, 0 HR, 12 RBI, 29 R, 19-for-24 SB, 23.2% BB, 25.2% K). His encouraging debut season continues.
CF Ruben Castillo2-for-5, 2 R, BB, K
.219/.329/.383 in 149 PA (6 doubles, 3 triples, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 26 R, 15-for-19 SB, 10.7% BB, 26.8% K)
DH Jose Castro1-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB, 2 K
3B Juan Torres3-for-6, 2B (5), HR (4), 4 RBI, 2 R, K
.344/.404/.521 in 109 PA (5 doubles, 4 HR, 23 RBI, 23 R, 10-for-16 SB, 4.6% BB, 12.8% K). The 17-year-old, who is in his debut campaign, has impressed all year. Do I worry about that crazy low BB%? No. He is making a lot of loud contact.
RF David Carrera1-for-4, R, SB (11), 2 BB, K
2B Christofer Reyes1-for-6, 2B (4), R, SB (20), 2 K
LF Richard Meran0-for-1, RBI, R, CS (4), 4 BB

RHP Carlos Hampshire (W, 3-2): 4.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Yankees MILB 7/20: Spencer Jones Has Gone Bananas

Notes:

According to the Baseball America signing tracker, 8th-round pick Mac Heuer has signed his name on the dotted line.  The Yankees have signed all of their picks from the first ten rounds.

The 21-year-old right-handed pitcher made 14 starts for Texas Tech in 2025, going 2-4 with a 6.28 ERA in 53 innings with a 48/23 K/BB. He was originally drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in 2023 but opted to go to college for two years. He also has Cape Cod League roots, throwing 6.2 innings as a 19-year-old in 2023.

I assume that his talent exceeds his performance, which makes sense. He is a big kid (6’5″) who supposedly hums in the mid-to-upper 90s.

In case you are wondering, first-round pick Dax Kilby received an overslot bonus of $2.8 million. The slot was $2,509,500. The Yankees saved slot money with 5th-round pick Core Jackson, who had low leverage as a college senior. When you look at the savings from his bonus, it covers what Kilby signed for.  Jackson is a shortstop out of the University of Utah.

We are still waiting on confirmation on RHP Brennan Stuprich (14th round; Southeastern Louisiana), SS Jackson Lovich (16th; Missouri), and RHP Hayden Morris (19th; Blinn College (JC)).  It appears that Stuprich and Lovich are signed but haven’t been added to the tracker. Morris has leverage as a Junior College kid. He could opt to go to a 4-year school.

So far, their picks between the 11th and 20th rounds have signed for the standard $150,000, which is more than Jackson received.  You are allowed to sign players in these rounds for more than $150,000, but any money over that counts against your bonus pool.

Injury Log

Scranton (55-37; 17-3 in second half) (Knocked out Worcester, 8-2, for their 11th straight win)

LF Everson Pereira1-for-5, HR (18), RBI, R, 2 K
Pereira, who is being overshadowed by a certain someone, has homered in three straight games.
CF Spencer Jones: 4-for-5, 2B (5), 2 HR (10), 2 RBI, 4 R, K (second straight 4-hit effort)
This is getting ridiculous. Today’s first home run was hit 445 feet at 109.6 MPH to center. He ties Ryan Ward (who hits minor league home runs for a living) for the overall minor league lead with 26. Last night, I commented that he was tied for first amongst all minor leaguers in OPS. After the dust cleared, he ended up being 0.01 points behind Mike Sirota. He should be in first place now in both OPS and wRC+ after today!
One of the criticisms (beyond the strikeouts) was his ground ball rate. This year, he has lowered that considerably, from 42.3% in 2024 to 30.7% (entering today). His percentages portray a player who hits the ball to all fields (not dead pull). That showed itself today, as his home runs were to center field and left field.
He is hitting .426/.481/.941 (1.422 OPS) since his promotion (16 games; 79 PA). That’s right: Jones has five doubles and ten home runs in 16 Triple-A games and 13 doubles/26 HR in 65 games overall.
C Rafael Flores2-for-5, R, K
Fans in Scranton get to witness the multi-hit machine Flores is for the first time today. This is his 29th multi-hit effort this season.
1B T.J. Rumfield: 3-for-4, 2B (24), RBI, R, HBP
Rumfield is 16-for-31 (.516) during his 8-game hitting streak. He has eight multi-hit efforts in his last 11 games and is up to .311/.394/.505.
3B Jeimer Candelario2-for-5, 2B (6), 2 RBI, R, 2 K
Candelario is 7-for-40 (.175) with a pair of doubles since being signed.
RF Bryan De La Cruz0-for-3, HBP, K
  RF Ismael Munguia1-for-1
DH Jose Rojas0-for-3, SF, RBI, HBP, K
2B Nicky Lopez0-for-4, BB
SS Andrew Velazquez0-for-4, 2 K

RHP Carlos Carrasco: (W, 3-2)  7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, HR
RHP Bailey Dees1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Bees’ Triple-A debut. He is a big kid who doesn’t wow you with velocity (maxed at 93.3 MPH). He also mixed in a slider and a changeup. It was nice to get some Savant data.
RHP Leonardo Pestana1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K

Somerset (48-42; 13-8 in second half) (Lost to Hartford, 3-2)

SS George Lombard Jr.1-for-4, HR (4), 2 RBI, R, K
Since the break: 4-for-14 with two doubles and two home runs (he has homered in back-to-back games). This follows a solid effort in the Futures Game over All-Star Weekend.
2B Roc Riggio0-for-4, 2 K
RF Jace Avina1-for-3, BB
Avina is 4-for-20 with a double and a homer since his promotion.
CF Brendan Jones1-for-4, K
Nice to see him get a hit, but the description of it in the 9th wasn’t flattering. Down 3-2 with one out in the 9th, he seemingly singled and was instantly caught in a rundown for the second out.  I would have to see this play because it’s very odd in its description.
DH Dylan Jasso0-for-3, BB, K
  PR Cam Eden0-for-0
C Omar Martinez0-for-4, K
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-3, 2 K
LF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, K
3B Max Burt0-for-1, R, 2 HBP

LHP Ben Shields: (L, 1-1) 5.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
At this level: 2.89 ERA (18.2 IP, 15 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 23 K).
RHP Luis Pacheco0.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Kelly Austin0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Michael Arias1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
His rehab stint is over, as he was officially assigned here (instead of going to Scranton).

Hudson Valley (52-35; 14-9 second half) (Their game against Jersey Shore was postponed due to wet grounds. They will try to make it up on August 20th. Drenching rain crushed the Jersey Shore area overnight.)

Tampa (45-43; 9-14 in second half) (Lost to Dunedin, 7-1)

C Edgleen Perez0-for-3, 2 BB, K
.206/.369/.230 in 358 PA. Since I declared he was figuring on this level: 0-for-23 with only three of his trademark walks.
SS Roderick Arias2-for-5, 2 K
Arias is again pushing to reach .200 for the first time this season. He is at .198/.318/.304 and has three multi-hit efforts in his last seven games.
DH Engelth Urena0-for-4, 2 K
CF Willy Montero0-for-4, 2 K
3B Juan Matheus1-for-3, R, 4 SB (35), BB
Stolen base rates: Before 2025: 38-for-55 (69.1%) in 109 games. 2025: 35-for-43 (81.4%) in 83 games.
RF Marshall Toole0-for-3, BB, 2 K
The 11-game hitting streak is snapped. Toole is hitting .312/.418/.498 in 244 PA (12 doubles, 10 triples, 2 HR, 27 RBI, 46 R, 27-for-30 SB). He leads the Florida State League in batting average and (shockingly) slugging percentage despite hitting only two home runs. Additionally, he is second in OBP.
LF Hans Montero: 2-for-4, RBI, K
Montero, who is hitting .254/.335/.408, is adapting to his utility role. He has added 1B/LF/RF to 2B/3B this season. He no longer plays shortstop.
2B Owen Cobb1-for-4
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-3, BB, 2 K

RHP Cade Smith2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
The 23-year-old’s rehab was moved from the FCL to here today. He touched 94.9 MPH with his four-seamer and used his entire arsenal. I am not sure I trust Savant’s data, which suggests he mixed six pitches. His best three pitches are his slider, curve, and 4-seamer. According to Pipeline, Smith is their 14th-ranked prospect
LHP Tanner Bauman1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
RHP Mariano Salomon: (L, 0-3) 2.1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 2 HR
RHP Chris Veach1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, HR
1.86 ERA (38.2 IP, 28 H, 13 R, 8 ER, 4 HR, 20 BB, 52 K). Veach can dial it up to the mid-90s, which is important for his bread-and-butter changeup.

FCL (26-29)

Day off.

DSL Yankees (14-20)

Day off.

DSL Bombers (17-17)

Day off.

Yankees MILB 7/19: Spencer Jones, George Lombard Jr. Homer

Notes:

C/1B Rafael Flores has finally been promoted to Scranton. Given Jesus Rodriguez‘s ability to play third base, there will be plenty of playing time for both.

After playing in 162 games for High-A Hudson Valley, Flores played in 152 for Somerset. He hit .281/.351/.505 with 37 doubles, a triple, 30 home runs, 89 RBI, 88 runs, 12 stolen bases (12 attempts), 25.97% K, and 9.0% BB. After posting a 153 wRC+ in Double-A in 2024, he compiled a 147 wRC+ in 2025.

Other promotions today include RHP Bailey Dees going to Scranton, C Tomas Frick going to Somerset, and C/1B John Cristino going from the FCL to Hudson Valley. Cristino has little professional experience (32 games) but is 25 years old.

RHP Yerry De los Santos, who pitched fairly well for the Yankees earlier this season, has started a rehab stint in Somerset.

Injury Log

Scranton (54-37; 16-3 in second half) (Outslugged Worcester, 10-8. They’ve scored 21 runs in two games since the break)

RF Everson Pereira1-for-5, HR (17), RBI, 2 R, K
Pereira leads off the game with a 357-foot home run.  He has homered in back-to-back games and has five in his last nine games. His triple slash sits at .260/.360/.519 in 275 plate appearances. I mentioned last night that he had 82 homers in 392 games. I should have added that he hit four home runs in his first 59 career games.
CF Spencer Jones4-for-5, 2B (4), HR (8), 3 RBI, R, BB
Not to be outdone, Jones followed up Pereira’s home run with a 433-foot, 107.4 MPH bomb to center. For Scranton, he is hitting .397/.459/.841 in 74 PA (4 doubles, 8 HR, 18 RBI, 19 R, 6-for-6 SB, 12.2% BB, 27.0% K). Overall, he is hitting .307/.408/.660 in 282 PA (12 doubles, 24 HR, 50 RBI, 61 R, 16-for-18 SB, 14.5% BB, 31.9% K). Amongst all minor leaguers who have played in full-season leagues all season, his 1.068 OPS is tied for first with Mike Sirota (LAD). Incredible.
C Rafael Flores1-for-6, 2 K
Flores finally makes his Triple-A debut.
1B T.J. Rumfield2-for-3, 2B (23), RBI, R, 3 BB, K
.306/.388/.498 in 353 PA with 11 homers and an organization-leading 64 RBI. Rumfield is on a 7-game hitting streak that features five multi-hit efforts and has seven multi-hit games over his last ten contests.
3B Jeimer Candelario1-for-6, R, K
2B Jose Rojas4-for-5, 3B (3), 3 HR (17), 5 RBI, 3 R
Prospect or not (he’s 32!), this is a tremendous game. It’s his second 3-HR game this season (May 1st). He has 63 RBI, one behind organizational leader T.J. Rumfield.
SS Nicky Lopez1-for-4, 2B (2), BB, 2 K
Lopez is 13-for-36 (.361) since joining the organization.
LF Duke Ellis1-for-3, 2B (3), 2 R, SB (13), BB, K

RHP Erick Leal5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, HR
LHP Jayvien Sandridge1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
LHP Brent Headrick1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Headrick was activated off the injured list today.
RHP Clayton Beeter (W, 1-0): 1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Can we put quotation marks around that “win”?
RHP Kervin Castro (S, 2): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
1.80 ERA (25 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 32 K)

Somerset (48-41; 13-7 in second half) (Lost to Hartford, 6-5, in ten innings. The minors are about development. It’s going to be tough for Somerset to replace Spencer Jones and Rafael Flores, but others will need to pick up the slack.)

SS George Lombard Jr.2-for-5, 2B (10), HR (3), RBI, R
Coming out of the break, Lombard Jr. has a pair of doubles and a homer. He is hitting .208/.329/.325 in 255 plate appearances since his promotion.
2B Roc Riggio1-for-3, HR (9), RBI, R, SB (6), CS (3), HBP, BB, 2 K
Since promotion: .276/.359/.578 in 131 PA (8 doubles, 9 HR, 24 RBI, 23 R, 6-for-9 SB, 8.4% BB, 22.1% K). Overall, Riggio has 12 doubles and 16 home runs in 53 games. His stolen base percentage has taken a hit this year (8-for-15 after a 27-for-33 rate last year)

FCL (26-29) (Won a thriller against the FCL Tigers, 7-6, in ten innings. They scored three runs in the bottom of the 9th to tie it, only for the Tigers to score a pair in the top of the 10th. The Yankees countered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Interestingly, they scored seven runs on seven hits without the aid of an extra-base hit. They walked “only” five times. Good things happen when you go 4-for-6 with a sacrifice fly with RISP.)

SS Dexters Peralta1-for-5, R, SB (8), K
After a disastrous 6-for-62 start, Peralta is 14-for-66 (.212). That includes going 11-for-38 (.282) in July. At least he will go into the offseason on a good note.
2B Enmanuel Tejeda1-for-3, RBI, R, 2 SB (2), CS (1), K
Tejeda is 7-for-23 with three doubles during his rehab stint. In 43 games for Tampa last season, he hit .310/.353/.369 with 24 stolen bases in 28 attempts. He did that as a 19-year-old.

Yankees MILB 7/18: Brendan Beck: 5 Hitless Innings

Notes:

In case you missed it (or you want to read it for the 50th time), I wrote up a mid-season review of the Yankees’ system.

OF Spencer Jones was missing from tonight’s Scranton lineup. That raises an eyebrow because the Railriders just had four days off. As I said last week, being out of a lineup doesn’t mean a trade is coming. Something is up because there isn’t a reason to give him five days off. If it is injury-related, I hope it isn’t the same injury that caused him to miss weeks of action earlier this season.

The Yankees signed several undrafted free agents to minor league deals:

OF Eric Genther
RHP Tommy O’Rourke
OF Robbie Burnett

The left-handed hitting Genther spent his entire collegiate career (that still happens?) with Rhode Island. This season, at age 23, he hit .361/.478/.584 with ten homers and 53 RBI in 60 games. While he has experience in LF and CF, he spent the entire 2025 season in right field.

Burnett, who also hits lefty, spent the 2025 season at the University of Georgia (transferred from UNC Asheville). He hit 307/.477/.693 with 20 homers, 66 RBI, and 17 stolen bases in 56 games. When a hitter does that in the SEC, you notice. While listed as an outfielder, he played 20 games at second base in addition to 34 games in right field, four games in left field, and two games in center field.

O’Rourke is a 23-year-old who spent 2025 pitching for Vanderbilt. It was his first action since 2022, when he threw for Stanford. This year, he posted a 4.02 ERA in 15.2 innings with an 18/6 K/BB. The fact that he caught Stanford’s eye in the first place tells you he had talent coming out of high school.

By the way, in addition to drafting Jeff Kents son (Kaeden Kent), the Yankees drafted Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek, son of Mark Grudzielanek, in the latest example of how old I am getting. He was drafted in the 20th (final) round out of USC.

Plenty of the 2025 draftees were assigned to the FCL. That doesn’t mean they will make their debuts immediately, but we might see a few of them before the FCL season ends on July 24th. Some may get playing time for Tampa. In 2024, many of the draftees/undrafted free agent signings went that route, including Brendan Jones, Marshall Tooleand Parks HarberAs you may suspect, pitchers are less likely to debut.

Injury Log

Scranton (53-37; 15-3 in second half) (Defeated Worcester, 11-3)

C Jesus Rodriguez: 2-for-4, SB (13), CS (7), BB
He will likely have to tone down that baserunning. Anyway, Rodriguez has a 10-game hitting streak (12-for-38; .316) and is hitting .313/.413/.411 at this level.
DH Jose Rojas: 3-for-4, 2B (23), HR (14), RBI, 2 R, BB, K
RF Everson Pereira1-for-5, HR (16), 2 RBI, 2 R
Pereira is 14-for-39 (.359; 3 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 13 R) in July and has 16 homers in 61 games. Over his minor league career, he has 82 homers in 1,720 plate appearances (392 games).
1B T.J. Rumfield3-for-5, HR (11), 3 RBI, 2 R, 2 K
Rumfield has a 6-game hitting streak and has compiled six multi-hit efforts in his last nine games. In those nine games, he is 17-for-38 (.447; 4 doubles, 2 HR, 17 RBI, 8 R). His triple slash has climbed from .281/.365/.462 to .302/.380/.493.
3B Jeimer Candelario: 2-for-5, 2B (5), 2 RBI, K
2B Nicky Lopez1-for-5, R, 2 K
LF Ismael Munguia: 2-for-5, 2B (9), RBI, R, SB (21)
SS Andrew Velazquez2-for-3, 2B (12), RBI, R, SB (23), BB
CF Duke Ellis0-for-3, SAC, K

RHP Brendan Beck: (W, 2-0)  5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K (new personal best)
Beck throws 79 pitches in a dominant effort. This drops his Scranton ERA to 3.89 (23.1 IP, 18 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 4 HR, 3 BB, 22 K). A healthy Beck has “modern day bulldog” potential, given that he can keep the walks low. The keyword in that sentence is “healthy”. While Beck is not a consistently hard thrower, he did dial up to 94.2 MPH today and generated 12 whiffs with his slider/curve combo.
RHP Baron Stuart1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
The Yankees probably like his mid-90s sinker, though swing-and-miss is an issue (zero strikeouts in six innings since his promotion).
RHP Eric Reyzelman1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
4.17 ERA (36.2 IP, 22 H, 17 R, 17 ER, 5 HR, 39 BB, 36 K).
RHP Joel Kuhnel1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Zach Messinger1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
5.16 ERA (52.1 IP, 56 H, 31 R, 30 ER, 4 HR, 34 BB, 51 K). As reliever: 2.59 ERA (24.1 IP, 20 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 15 BB, 25 K)

Somerset (48-40; 13-6 in second half) (Defeated Hartford, 8-5)

SS George Lombard Jr.1-for-5, 2B (9), K
C Rafael Flores2-for-4, 2 R, BB, 2 K
Flores has 28 multi-hit efforts this season.
3B Dylan Jasso2-for-5, 2B (12), RBI, 2 R, 3 K
RF Jace Avina1-for-4, HR (1), 3 RBI, R, BB, K
Avina’s first Double-A homer (9th HR overall this season).
CF Brendan Jones1-for-3, R, SB (8), 2 BB, K
Jones started slow here but is now 13-for-40 (.325; 3 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 9 R, 6-for-6 SB, 9 BB, 10 K) in July.
DH Omar Martinez1-for-3, RBI, R, BB, K
Since promotion: .260 (13-for-50).
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-4, HR (14), 3 RBI, R, 2 K
Hardman has four doubles and three home runs in 11 July games. His trade value isn’t much, but if Andres Chaparro and Eric Wagaman can find MLB jobs, perhaps Hardman can too.
LF Cole Gabrielson0-for-2, 2 BB
2B Max Burt0-for-4, 2 K

RHP Luis Gil3.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, HR
Gil allowed a 2-run homer to the third batter he faced before settling in. He threw 57 pitches tonight and likely has a few more rehab starts to get through.
RHP Hayden Merda0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Merda was used as a bridge tonight.
LHP Brock Selvidge: (W, 2-2)  4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Selvidge piggybacked off of Gil and put together a strong effort. At this level: 3.07 ERA (29.1 IP, 19 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 19 BB, 25 K)
LHP Ryan Anderson0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (52-34; 14-8 second half) (Lost to Jersey Shore, 9-3. Former Yankees’ farmhand Gabriel Barbosa got some revenge on his former organization by tossing five hitless innings)

LF Jackson Castillo0-for-4, BB, 2 K
CF Dillon Lewis2-for-4, RBI
Lewis collects their only two hits. He owns a 5-game hitting streak (8-for-19; 1 double, 2 HR).
1B Coby Morales0-for-3, BB, K
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, 2 K

RF Anthony Hall0-for-4, K

LHP Griffin Herring: (L, 3-2) 4 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 6 K
One of the Yankees’ biggest 2025 success stories couldn’t find a groove in his first start out of the break, though damage was limited. He required 90 pitches to get those 12 outs. Since promotion: 2.22 ERA (44.2 IP, 32 H, 13 R, 11 ER, 1 HR, 20 BB, 44 K). Overall, he has passed the 100 strikeout mark (102/36 K/BB over 89.1 innings)
RHP Matt Keating1.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Tyrone Yulie1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Ocean Gabonia1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.52 ERA (23 IP, 24 H, 14 R, 9 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 21 K)
RHP Chris Kean0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (45-41; 9-12 in second half) (Lost to Dunedin, 4-3)

C Edgleen Perez0-for-4, R, 2 K
CF Brian Sanchez1-for-1
I am not sure why he left the game.
   CF Marshall Toole1-for-3, R, BB
Toole is the proud owner of a 10-game hitting streak (15-for-34 with two doubles and five triples. How often do you see five triples during a 10-game hitting streak?)  His triple slash has climbed from .287/.388/.443 to .313/.418/.502.
SS Roderick Arias1-for-2, R, 2 SB (22), 2 BB, K
Broken record. I am not sure why he left the game.  If you want some positive news for their struggling bonus baby, he has hit fairly well in July (.244/.358/.467; 1 double, 3 HR).
  1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-1, K
DH Engelth Urena0-for-2, CS (2), 2 BB, K
RF Willy Montero0-for-3, BB, K
3B Juan Matheus0-for-2, RBI, 2 BB, K

1B-2B Hans Montero1-for-4, 3 K
2B Austin Green0-for-0, SB (8), BB
More broken records: I am not sure why he left the game.
   PH-2B-SS Owen Cobb0-for-3, K

LHP Allen Facundo3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Facundo continues to hum. Tonight, he reached 99.7 MPH and averaged 96.4…with his sinker. His 4-seam fastball “only” reached 98.4. He also uses a slider (his top pitch tonight – 40%). Signed for an undisclosed amount, his main issue is health. Including tonight, he has tossed 121.1 innings in his career (which traces back to 2021). He has the talent – can he harness it and stay healthy?
RHP Gus Hughes1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Sean Hermann2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
1.96 ERA (41.1 IP, 24 H, 16 R, 9 ER, 0 HR, 27 BB, 35 K). One loves a reliever who can keep the ball in the ballpark. The walks have come down considerably since April, but remain something he needs to work on.
RHP Justin Lange (L, 1-1): 0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 2 HR
That didn’t go according to plan.
RHP Cade Austin2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

FCL (25-29 – they have no shot at the playoffs) (Lost to the FCL Tigers (35-20), 7-6)

DH Dexters Peralta2-for-5, R
After a miserable start (he was hitting .097 on July 1st), Peralta is 10-for-30 (.333). That’s enough to raise his average to .154.
C Ediel Rivera2-for-3, SB (9), CS (4), K
   RF Luis Puello1-for-2, HR (3), 2 RBI, R
1B-C John Cristino3-for-5, HR (4), RBI, 2 R, SB (6)

.260/.405/.438 in 121 PA (6 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR, 23 RBI, 25 R, 7-for-9 SB). Impressive for a 17-year-old in his debut campaign.
3B Richard Matic2-for-3, R, 2 BB, K
.341/.475/.560 in 120 impressive plate appearances. How crazy is this league? Not only is Matic not in the top ten in any category, but there is a hitter at this level (Cristian Arguelles (COL)) who is hitting .463/.561/.720 with 12 doubles and 45 RBI in 33 games.
C Edgar Jimenez2-for-4, R, K
.324/.378/.441 in 37 PA.

DSL Bombers (17-17) (Knocked off the DSL Yankees, 10-4)

SS Stiven Marinez: 2-for-5, 2B (4), RBI, 2 R, SB (19), 2 K

CF Ruben Castillo: 2-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RBI, 2 R, SB (12), BB
Castillo’s debut season has its ups and downs. He has back-to-back multi-hit games to build on.

Yankees MILB 7/11: The Spencer Jones Show Continues

Notes:

From an article on The Athletic, the Yankees are transitioning former top catching prospect Antonio Gomez to pitching. Gomez, who is already Rule 5 eligible, supposedly is touching 100 MPH during workouts.

In my opinion, which was wrong (though I don’t mind admitting it), Gomez was the most intriguing catching prospect they had a few years ago. As a 17-year-old in the rookie leagues in 2019, he hit .288/.351/.442 in 15 games. After COVID shut down the minors in 2020, he came back to hit .305/.416/.474 in the FCL. That was enough to get him to Low-A late in the season, and that was the end of his offensive development. What do I tell people about Rookie League numbers again? Oh yeah – DON’T TRUST THEM.

Anyway, a strong-armed, no-hit catcher is always a candidate to move to pitching. There are other examples, but the one that always comes to mind is Troy Percival

George Lombard Jr. was placed on the “temporary inactive list” because he is playing in the Futures Game on Saturday.

OF Garrett Martin was placed on the 7-day injured list for Somerset today. Infielder Parks Harber, who hasn’t played forever, is officially on the 7-day injured list for Hudson Valley. Harber was hitting .319/.404/.510 when he disappeared from the lineup on June 12th. He was in the midst of a 9-game hitting streak.

In promotion news, RHP Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz, infielder Duncan Pastore, and OF Jace Avina were promoted from Hudson Valley to Somerset. To replace Rodriguez-Cruz, RHP Andrew Landry was moved from Tampa to Hudson Valley.

Injury Log

Scranton (50-37) (Mauled Buffalo, 10-1)

C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-5, R
Rodriguez has a 7-game hitting streak (8-for-27; .296). It isn’t one of those “scorching hot” hitting streaks, but he was slumping for awhile.
CF Spencer Jones: 3-for-5, HR (6), 3 RBI, 3 R, 2 K
Since promotion: 20-for-49 (.408; 3 doubles, 6 HR, 14 RBI, 17 R, 6-for-6 SB, 8 BB, 17 K). He has been insane for Scranton after hitting 16 homers in 49 games for Somerset.  So you want to be a GM? Think about whether he is a keep or trade right now. And your decision has zero consequences.
RF Everson Pereira2-for-3, R, HBP, BB, K
.266/.367/.514 in 256 PA. Pereira is 12-for-27 (.444) in July with 2 doubles, a triple, three homers, 11 RBI, and seven walks.
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-5, HR (10), 4 RBI, R, K
Rumfield has five multi-hit games in his last six games played. He has 14 RBI during this stretch (up to 60 in 80 games) and his triple slash has risen from .281/.365/.462 to .297/.377/.483.

I am happy that the Patriots’ faithful are getting to see what type of player Jones can be. The 23-year-old is up to 30 stolen bases between here and Hudson Valley and is 48-for-53 in his career.  In July, he is 11-for-28 (3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 6 R, 5 SB, 7 BB)
1B Rafael Flores0-for-4, 2 K
2B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, HR (12), RBI, R, K
Jasso has cooled off after a hot start (still hit a decent .241/.347/.425 in June).
CF Jace Avina0-for-3, R, BB, K
Avina’s Double-A debut.
C Omar Martinez0-for-3, R, BB, K
3B Tyler Hardman1-for-2, R, 2 BB
LF Cole Gabrielson1-for-4, K
RF Cam Eden1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, R, K
Eden is known more  for his speed than his power, though he did hit 12 HR in 94 games in 2022.
SS Max Burt1-for-1, RBI, BB

LHP Ben Shields5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
The 26-year-old had a solid year in 2024 (3.48 ERA in 106 IP with a 137/33 K/BB) but an injury delayed his start in 2025. He’s come back as if he never missed any time. In his three starts for Somerset: 13 IP, 12 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 5 BB, 20 K. Don’t be surprised if teams ask for him as a “deal sweetener” this month. If he isn’t moved, he can factor into the Yankees’ 2026 plans in some capacity.
RHP Mason Vinyard1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (51-32) (Walked it off against Asheville, 4-3. They are 13-6 in the second half; 6-game winning streak)

LF Jackson Castillo1-for-3, 2B (14), RBI, BB
Castillo continues to scorch (13-for-31 with two doubles, two homers, four walks, and four stolen bases in July).
CF Dillon Lewis2-for-4, HR (6), RBI, R
So much talent to tap into. He has 15 homers and 19 stolen bases in 79 games but it’s all about the overall hit tool.
RF Coby Morales1-for-4, 2B (16)
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, K
3B-1B Josh Moylan0-for-3, BB, K
2B Brenny Escanio0-for-3, BB, K

C Edgleen Perez0-for-4, 2 K
CF Brian Sanchez0-for-3, BB, K

SS Roderick Arias0-for-4, 4 K
So much for making it to .200 for the first time this season!
DH Engelth Urena0-for-4, 2 K
LF Willy Montero2-for-3
They were thoroughly dominated tonight, so Montero’s two hits stand out!  Montero, who is still only 20 years old (he’s been around since 2021!), is 6-for-17 with a double and triple since coming off his rehab stint.
3B Juan Matheus0-for-3, K
RF Wilson Rodriguez0-for-3, K
2B Austin Green1-for-3
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-2, BB

RHP Mariano Salomon: (L, 0-2)  5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Salomon’s first Low-A start.
RHP Sean Hermann1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
2.06 ERA (39.1 IP, 23 H, 16 R, 9 ER, 0 HR, 27 BB, 31 K). Hermann is an extreme groundball guy (63.8% entering tonight)
RHP Cade Austin1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Justin Lange1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

FCL (24-25) (Lost to the Tigers, 8-7, in another extra-inning thriller (this was a 7-inning contest). After the Tigers scored six in the bottom of the 6th to take the lead, the Yankees scored three in the top of the seventh to tie it. In the 8th, they scored one to take the lead, but the Tigers countered with two in the bottom half to win the game.)

SS Dexters Peralta1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, R, 2 BB, K
The sample size is still small enough that a hot end to the season will lift his numbers to respectability. The climb remains a steep one.
DH Ediel Rivera0-for-3, RBI, R, HBP, BB, K
CF Isael Arias2-for-4, R, 2 SB (18), BB
One thing you can say about Arias: He takes advantage of stolen base opportunities. He only has a .254 OBP. Imagine how many he can steal if he learns to hit better!
C John Cristino2-for-4, 2B (4), SF, RBI, R, SB (4), 2 K
19 starts at 1B, 5 at catcher.
1B Santiago Gomez0-for-2, R, HBP, BB
2B Luis Escudero1-for-3, 2B (3), RBI, R, BB
3B Kevin Verde2-for-4, 3 RBI

RHP Omar Gonzalez5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
How often do teams blow games when their starter has a no-hitter going? I can’t think of one before today.

DSL Yankees (12-17) (Lost to DSL Rangers Blue, 9-7, in ten innings)

SS Mani Cedeno0-for-4, 2 R, SB (4), 2 BB, 4 K
That’s an interesting afternoon. The 16-year-old takes his share of walks (18%), which is something for him to build on.
2B Carlos Bello1-for-5, 2B (6)
Bello’s debut campaign continues to go well: .280/.423/.488 in 104 PA (6 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 23 R, 7-for-8 SB)
CF Francisco Vilorio2-for-5, RBI, 2 R, 2 K
.298/.434/.333 in 106 PA. He is on a 6-game hitting streak (9-for-23). Vilorio (18) is a bonus baby who is repeating the level, so we’ll see how he performs in the FCL in 2026.
3B Richard Matic1-for-3, RBI, R, BB, K
Matic is crushing the level this year. Another kid to observe in the FCL next year.
DH Justin Capellan2-for-4, HR (5), 3 RBI, R, SB (8), BB
.312/.409/.623 in 93 PA (9 doubles, 5 HR, 24 RBI, 21 R). In 63 DSL games over the last two years, the 18-year-old has 21 doubles, 6 HR, 49 RBI, and 37 runs.

LHP Carlos De La Rosa3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
18.2 IP, 23 H, 12 R, 11 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 33 K. One has to love that K/BB.

DSL Bombers (14-15) (Lost to the DSL Marlins, 6-2)

SS Stiven Marinez0-for-3, R, SB (16), BB, 2 K
Marinez has a 17-game on-base streak (at least one walk in 15 of those games).
DH Jose Castro1-for-4, 2B (2), RBI

RHP Carlos Hampshire (L, 1-2): 3.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 6 K

Yankees MILB 7/6: Spencer Jones Launches a Bomb

Notes:

The Yankees traded veteran catcher Alex Jackson to the Orioles for international bonus pool money. Yesterday, the Yankees released Ronaldo Hernandez. Their catching depth has taken a (minor) hit, but they are comfortable with Ben RiceTheir Scranton depth now consists of Jesus Rodriguez and Edinson Duran, a 22-year-old who has appeared in three games this season. Rafael Flores and Omar Martinez provide additional depth in Somerset.  It wouldn’t be shocking if they look around for a veteran depth piece. Is Erik Kratz available?

Jackson probably had another opt-out coming up. He already opted out twice, only to come back (likely for more money). Teams don’t typically hold back veterans if an opportunity presents itself. It’s the same thing that happened with Luis Torrens last year.

For Scranton, he hit .226/.308/.463 (101 wRC+) with ten homers and 34 RBI in 44 games. Providing offense in the minors has never been an issue for Jackson. The majors? It’s hard to find a worse stat line than his .132/.224/.232 (29 wRC+) line in 340 plate appearances. To put it in perspective, Oswald Peraza has a 42 wRC+ this season.

Injury Log

Scranton (46-37) (Defeated Lehigh Valley, 9-6)

3B Jorbit Vivas1-for-3, 2 R, CI, BB, K
C Jesus Rodriguez2-for-4, R, SB (11), HBP, K
Rodriguez may be coming out of his funk, as he is 6-for-20 with five walks in July. He is hitting .315/.412/.407 at this level.
CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, HR (4), SF, 4 RBI, K
This wasn’t a garden variety homer, as Jones hit it 445 feet at 113.4 MPH. Wow. He is up to 20 HR in 57 games between Somerset/Scranton. The minor league leaders entering today are Ryan Ward (27 years old; LAA) and Bob Seymour (26; TB), who have hit 22 in considerably more games.
LF Everson Pereira: 0-for-3, R, SB (6), 2 BB, K
Known for his power, Pereira shows off some plate discipline and speed today. He is hitting .262/.350/.514 in 246 PA (7 doubles, 1 triple, 15 HR, 45 RBI, 52 R, 6-for-7 SB). He has stolen as many as 21 bases in a season, but that was three years ago.
1B T.J. Rumfield3-for-4, 2 2B (20), 2 RBI, R, BB
.294/.378/.476 in 315 PA. He has back-to-back 3-hit efforts (six 3+ hit efforts this season). I point out that Rumfield wasn’t chosen in the Rule 5 draft last year. While true, that doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of interest. Most teams go into the Rule 5 looking for bullpen help or versatility. Rumfield offers neither.
RF Bryan De La Cruz2-for-4, 2B (7), HR (9), SF, 3 RBI, R
De La Cruz has six doubles and nine homers in 47 games for Scranton. He has added a 6-for-6 stolen base rate, but his entire game is the ability to swat extra-base hits.
DH Jose Rojas1-for-4, BB, K
2B Nicky Lopez0-for-4, K
SS Andrew Velazquez: 1-for-3, 2 R, SB (19), HBP

RHP Erick Leal: (W, 4-7) 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, HR
From 1-7 to 4-7. He isn’t viable in MLB, but nice to see the veteran get on a little roll and provide some Triple-A innings.
RHP Kervin Castro1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Castro’s first appearance since May 18th. The 26-year-old owns a 2.08 ERA in 21.2 IP (8 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 9 BB, 26 K). He hasn’t pitched in MLB since 2022. In 2021, he allowed one run (unearned) in 13.1 innings. The next year, he allowed 14 runs in 12.1 innings.
RHP Baron Stuart0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
Double-A is the toughest level to conquer. That doesn’t mean Triple-A is “easy”.
RHP Zach Messinger1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR

Somerset (42-39) (Defeated Reading, 4-2)

3B George Lombard Jr.1-for-3, 2B (8), R, HBP, K
Lombard Jr. has four doubles in his last 11 games. Because he is having trouble getting on base lately, the stolen bases have disappeared (one in his last 15 games). My level of concern remains extremely low.
2B Roc Riggio1-for-2, HBP, BB
At this level: .286/.353/.590 in 116 PA. He’s hitting during his first taste at this level. Encouraging.
DH Rafael Flores0-for-4, RBI
.285/.345/.495 in 342 PA (23 doubles, 14 HR, 54 RBI, 44 R, 5-for-5 SB, 8.5% BB, 26% K). Will they move him up to Scranton during tomorrow’s off day? I wouldn’t discount it. He is up to 615 Double-A plate appearances (.280/.351/.505; 37 doubles, 29 HR, 87 RBI)
C Omar Martinez1-for-4, R, K
LF Brendan Jones1-for-4, R, K
We have seen a few signs of life from Jones (mostly from his 4-hit game, however), though he hasn’t “broken out” yet at this level.
CF Cole Gabrielson0-for-4, 2 K
1B Tyler Hardman: 2-for-4, 2B (15), HR (12), 2 RBI, R, SB (8), K
.216/.257/.435 in 245 PA (15 doubles, 12 HR, 36 RBI, 28 R, 8-for-9 SB, 5.3% BB, 31.8% K)
RF Jared Wegner0-for-4, 3 K
SS Max Burt0-for-2, SB (8), HBP, 2 K

RHP Trystan Vrieling: (W, 1-2)  6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, HR
Vrieling tossed 72 pitches today, so they are close to letting him fully stretch out. He is up to 41 innings since coming back from injury.
RHP Cole Ayers1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Bailey Dees1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
As a reliever: 2.76 ERA (16.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 17 K).
RHP Danny Watson (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
I remember dreaming of Dees/Watson/Jack Neely as three tall right-handed relievers in the pen.  Season: 6.90 ERA (30 IP, 35 H, 23 R, 23 ER, 6 HR, 7 BB, 34 K).  Watson, who stands 6’7″, was having a big year in 2023 before an injury ended his campaign.  He hasn’t been the same since, though he’s had some solid outings lately.

Hudson Valley (47-32) (Defeated Brooklyn, 2-1. Thank goodness for tomorrow’s offday, as the bullpen was worked today!)

CF Jace Avina1-for-4, R, K
RF Dillon Lewis1-for-4, HR (5), 2 RBI, R, K
Lewis has 14 HR in 75 games between here and Tampa. He is only hitting .185/.242/.370 since his promotion, with ten extra-base hits (22 hits overall)
DH Coby Morales1-for-4, 3 K
LF Jackson Castillo3-for-4, 2B (13)
Castillo is heating up. He is 12-for-30 in his last eight games, raising his triple slash from .221/.318/.303 to .241/.334/.328.
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-3, SB (8), HBP, K
Vargas’ hitting streak reaches an impressive 15.
3B Jose Colmenares0-for-4, K
1B Josh Moylan1-for-4, K
2B Brenny Escanio2-for-4
C Tomas Frick1-for-3, 2B (8),

LHP Geoffrey Gilbert3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
About a month ago, I bragged about their pitching logjam. Today, they used a reliever to start. Sue me. Season: 2.59 ERA (24.1 IP, 19 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 11 BB, 36 K). This was his first professional start (made five starts for Clemson in 2022)
RHP Bryce Warrecker (W, 1-0): 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
0.77 ERA (35 IP, 15 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 38 K). He is having a ridiculous season. Yes, I see the low BABIP – it’s almost impossible to be this good without a low BABIP!
RHP Chris Kean1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Huey Morrill1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
0.31 ERA (28.1 IP, 11 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 21 K). The Warrecker/Morrill duo has been lights out.
RHP Matt Keating1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Tony Rossi (S, 3): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
The easiest kind of save. He owns a 0.99 ERA between here and Tampa (27.1 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 11 BB, 35 K)

Tampa (43-36) (Lost a crazy game against Clearwater, 14-9)

C Edgleen Perez3-for-4, 2 BB
Reaching base five times works, even if it didn’t lead to a win. He is hitting .225/.383/.253 in 316 PA and has five multi-hit efforts in his last nine games. The Yankees haven’t wavered all season, even when he was struggling mightily early. It’s paying off.
LF Brian Sanchez1-for-6, RBI, R, K
SS Roderick Arias1-for-5, RBI, R, 2 K
DH Engelth Urena0-for-3, 2 BB, K
3B Juan Matheus1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, R, BB, K
Known more for speed than pop (10th HR in 183 career games), Matheus hits his first HR since July 13, 2024.
RF Wilson Rodriguez0-for-2, SF, RBI, 2 R, 2 BB, K
1B-2B Hans Montero: 3-for-5, 2 2B (8), HR (8), 3 RBI, 2 R, K
Eight total bases make for a strong afternoon. He is hitting .250/.338/.410 in 229 PA (8 doubles, 8 HR, 32 RBI, 32 R, 15-for-19 SB) and is on an 8-game hitting streak (10-for-33). His personal best for stolen bases is 17, set in 2023.
CF Marshall Toole2-for-3, 3B (9), RBI, R, CS (3), 2 BB, K
Fun fact: Toole is the first Yankees’ farmhand to hit 9 triples since Everson Pereira in 2022. The last Yankees prospect to reach ten? Jorge Mateo, who hit 11 in 2017.  Toole’s season: .305/.412/.484 in 226 PA (10 doubles, 9 triples, 2 HR, 23 RBI, 43 R, 26-for-29 SB).
2B Austin Green1-for-3, K
  1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-1, R, BB, K

RHP Brandon Decker: (L, 1-2)  2.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
A little misstep in his transition to starting. He owns a 3.10 ERA in 40.2 IP (37 H, 21 R, 14 ER, 1 HR, 19 BB, 38 K).
RHP Jack Sokol0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Yankees MILB 7/5: Everson Pereira Completes the Cycle

Notes:

1B/3B Jeimer Candelario was signed to a minor league deal after being released by the Cincinnati Reds.

Candelario, a 31-year-old switch-hitter, hit a robust .113/.198/.213 (10 wRC+ – they give you nine points just for spelling your name right)  in 91 plate appearances for the Reds this season. Yay.

In an ill-advised deal, the Reds signed him to a  3-year, $45 million contract heading into 2024. This was after a 4-year stretch where he hit .254/.329/.437 (113 OPS+). In 134 games for the Reds, he hit .207/.265/.394 in 554 plate appearances with 25 doubles, 22 homers, and 66 RBI.

In case you are wondering, the Reds are still on the hook for most of the money. The Yankees will pay him the prorated league minimum, which gets deducted from his Reds pay.

Will they call him up? They likely signed him with that possibility in mind, but he shouldn’t excite anyone at this point. His bat has tanked, and his defense doesn’t make up for it.

The Yankees also signed veteran RHP Joel Kuhnel to a minor league contract. He was recently released from his minor league deal with the Phillies.

Kuhnel, 30, has 82 games of MLB experience, mostly with the Cincinnati Reds, in addition to cameos with the Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays. Most of his action came with the 2022 Reds, where he posted a 6.36 ERA in 53 games (58 IP, 67 H, 8 HR, 14 BB, 56 K). Overall, in 82 MLB games, he owns a 5.86 ERA in 93.2 IP with a 52% GB, 18.7% K, and 5.9% BB. His pitch mix includes a 4-seamer, sinker, slider, and changeup.

Left-handed reliever Will Brian was placed on the injured list for Somerset today.

RHP Geoff Hartlieb, designated for assignment by the Yankees earlier this week, has elected free agency, while former Top 100 prospect (not as a Yankee!) Ronaldo Hernandez was released. The right-handed hitting catcher wasn’t used much, appearing in 25 games for Scranton, hitting .221/.287/.351 with a pair of homers and 13 RBI.

Injury Log

Scranton (45-37) (Crushed Lehigh Valley, 16-6)

2B Jorbit Vivas0-for-3, 2 R, 3 BB, 2 K
We’ll take the three walks, but Vivas is in a 3-for-29 slump.
3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-5, 2B (13), 2 RBI, 2 R, BB, K
RF Spencer Jones: 2-for-4, SF, RBI, 2 R, SB (2), BB, K
Since promotion: .393/.486/.821 in 35 PA (2 doubles, 3 HR, 4 RBI, 8 R, 2-for-2 SB, 6 BB, 11 K (31.4%)). Overall, he is hitting .291/.403/.626 in 243 PA (11 doubles, 19 HR, 36 RBI, 50 R, 12-for-14 SB, 15.6% BB, 33.3% K). If I was a General Manager, it would be difficult for me to give up a talent like this, even if I recognize the bust potential.
CF Everson Pereira5-for-6, 2B (7), 3B (1), 2 HR (15), 6 RBI, 4 R
Pereira with the cycle!  This is his second career 5-hit game (8/12/21; 5-for-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI), and he misses his personal best for RBI (7 on 6/17/22). As for past cycles, Ryder Green accomplished one for Pulaski (a Yankees affiliate at the time) in 2019. Green was an interesting prospect once upon a time. Injuries derailed him. If there has been a more recent one (probably), I can’t find it. Back to Pereira: He has 3 HR and 9 RBI in his last two games (11 RBI in four July contests).
1B T.J. Rumfield3-for-5, 4 RBI, BB
.287/.371/.464 in 310 PA (18 doubles, 1 triple, 9 HR, 50 RBI, 47 R, 4-for-5 SB, 10.9% BB, 18.4% K).
DH Bryan De La Cruz2-for-5, HR (8), RBI, R, BB, K
Since signing with the Yankees’ organization, De La Cruz has eight homers in 46 games.
SS Nicky Lopez2-for-4, 2 R, 2 BB, K
His debut as a member of the Yankees’ organization. The signing of Candelario doesn’t invade his space, given that they only overlap at third base.
C Alex Jackson0-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB
LF Duke Ellis2-for-5, 2B (2), 2 RBI, R, SB (9), K

RHP Allan Winans: (W, 8-0)  5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
1.30 ERA (55.1 IP, 45 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 15 BB, 59 K). Winans has done his job here. I won’t try to convince you that he showed much in MLB. He’s a pitcher who has to be precise with everything, or he is going to get hit.
RHP Luis Pacheco0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Eric Reyzelman1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
This is as sharp as we have seen Reyzelman this year. Can he follow it up? Season: 3.82 ERA (33 IP, 20 H, 14 R, 14 ER, 4 HR, 37 BB, 34 K)
RHP Joel Kuhnel1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
His Yankees’ organizational debut didn’t go as planned.
RHP Leonardo Pestana0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Somerset (41-39) (Walked it off against Reading, 4-3)

2B Roc Riggio: 4-for-5, 2 2B (8), 2 RBI, R
Riggio walks it off with a 1-out, 2-run single. It’s his first career 4-hit effort, and he is hitting .282/.339/.592 since his promotion. The pop continues to show up, as he has 16 extra-base hits in 26 games for Somerset (8 doubles, 8 HR). As a Yankees fan, the thing that should intrigue you is his pull power. If he stays with the organization, the porch will play into his game.
SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-3, HBP
Lombard Jr. has run into a little 2-for-20 slump. Typically, when he isn’t hitting, he still gets on base. However, this slump includes only two walks and two HBP.  It happens.
C Rafael Flores0-for-3, BB, K
1B Dylan Jasso0-for-3, SF, RBI
LF Garrett Martin1-for-4, R, 2 K
CF Brendan Jones0-for-2, R, SB (4), 2 BB
Jones is 27-for-32 (84.4%) stealing bases between here and Hudson Valley.
DH Omar Martinez1-for-4, 2B (2), K
Martinez is 6-for-27 with two doubles and a homer since being promoted.
RF Cam Eden0-for-3, R, BB, 3 K
3B Max Burt1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
The veteran minor leaguer kept the line moving with an RBI single in the 9th.

LHP Ben Shields4.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
For Somerset: 8 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 13 K. They stretched him to 70 pitches tonight (Shields has been rehabbing from an injury)
RHP Mason Vinyard1.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Hayden Merda1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
Double-A can be tough to adjust to. That’s a statement that always stands the test of time.
RHP Indigo Diaz1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
3.78 ERA (33.1 IP, 23 H, 15 R, 14 ER, 2 HR, 15 BB, 30 K)

Hudson Valley (46-32) (Shut down Brooklyn, 7-0)

DH Jace Avina1-for-4, SB (3), BB, K
.284/.402/.438 in 204 PA (13 doubles, 4 HR, 24 RBI, 31 R, 14.2% BB, 25% K). Who was the better prospect acquired for Jake Bauers? Most say Avina over Brian Sanchez, though Sanchez is making strides.
CF Dillon Lewis0-for-4, BB, K
1B Coby Morales0-for-5, 2 K
LF Jackson Castillo: 2-for-4, 2 R, SB (14), BB, K
Last 7 games: 9-for-26 (.346) with five runs scored.
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-3, 2 R, SB (7), 2 BB
Vargas has a 14-game hitting streak. Would you be shocked, given what baseball is, to find out that he started this streak after a 2-for-23 stretch?
3B Jose Colmenares2-for-4, 2B (11), RBI, R, BB
C Manuel Palencia1-for-5, 2B (1), 3 RBI, R, 2 K
This was a 1-0 game in the 8th inning, when Palencia cleared the bases with a double.
RF Luis Durango1-for-4, R, K
2B Duncan Pastore1-for-3, BB, K

RHP Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz: (W, 6-4)  7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 8 K
2.26 ERA (83.2 IP, 52 H, 27 R, 21 ER, 1 HR, 37 BB, 99 K). Will the 21-year-old finish the season in Somerset? Possible. This is the second time this season that he tossed seven shutout innings. He has two other starts where he pitched 6.1 shutout frames. By the way, he tossed 89.2 innings in 2024.
RHP Jordany Ventura1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
RHP Tyrone Yulie0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (43-35) (Lost a doubleheader to Clearwater)

Game 1 (Lost, 6-3. This was the conclusion of Thursday’s game.)

CF Brian Sanchez1-for-5, R, K
C Engelth Urena1-for-5, 2B (12), 3 K
SS Roderick Arias: 2-for-5, HR (5), 2 RBI, R, 2 K
Arias has homered three times in his last two games.
3B Juan Matheus3-for-4, 2B (17), SB (30)
Matheus leads the Yankees’ organization in stolen bases. This is his 19th multi-hit game this year.
RF Wilson Rodriguez0-for-4
Rodriguez’s Low-A debut.
LF Austin Green0-for-3, R, BB, 3 K
1B Hans Montero1-for-4
RF Marshall Toole1-for-3, 3B (8), RBI, BB
Toole is among the minor league leaders in triples (only Raudi Rodriguez (LAA) has reached double digits).
2B Owen Cobb1-for-3, BB
Cobb’s first game since June 13th. He is hitting .333/.389/.538 in 110 plate appearances while playing second base, shortstop, and third base.

LHP Xavier Rivas3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, HR
Not the way he wanted to follow up his 13-strikeout effort. That’s the way it goes.
RHP Mariano Salomon (L, 0-1): 3.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Salomon’s Low-A debut. We get some Savant data now. He featured a four-pitch mix that includes a 4-seamer, change, slider, and curve. He didn’t throw hard (max: 89.5 MPH).
RHP Michael Arias1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Arias averaged 96.1 MPH with his sinker (max: 97.3), if you are wondering why the Yankees acquired him. He is here on a rehab stint.

Game 2 (Lost, 4-2, in six innings. More rain wiped out the 7th inning)

C Edgleen Perez0-for-3
CF Brian Sanchez0-for-3
SS Roderick Arias0-for-2, R, BB, K
DH Engelth Urena0-for-3, R
3B Juan Matheus1-for-3, 2B (18), RBI, K
Matheus has yet to homer, but he has 18 doubles and 34 RBI to go with his 30 stolen bases in 73 games. He hit five homers (all in the FCL) in 54 games last year but was only 12-for-19 stealing bases.
LF Wilson Rodriguez: 1-for-2, SB (1), BB
Rodriguez’s first Low-A hit.
RF Marshall Toole1-for-1, 2 BB
.299/.403/.471 in 221 PA (10 doubles, 8 triples, 2 HR, 22 RBI, 42 R, 26-for-28 SB, 14.5% BB, 19.9% K).
2B Owen Cobb0-for-2, BB, 2 K
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-3, 2 K

RHP Andrew Landry3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
4.20 ERA (64.1 IP, 70 H, 39 R, 30 ER, 4 HR, 26 BB, 63 K)
RHP Justin Lange: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Lange’s rehab is over, and he was assigned here.
RHP Jackson Fristoe: (L, 3-2)  1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Cole Zaffiro0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

FCL (20-24) (Tried to play two games against the Phillies. They completed one of them)

Game 1 (Lost, 4-1)

SS Dexters Peralta2-for-3, 2B (3)
DH Enmanuel Tejeda0-for-2, BB, K
The first rehab game for Tejeda, one of my favorite under-the-radar prospects. Before his injury in 2024, Tejeda hit .326/.371/.408 in 203 plate appearances. In those 48 games, he stole 26 bases in 30 attempts. I think there is utility upside with this kid, who is on the smaller side of the ledger (5’9″).
CF Willy Montero2-for-3, BB
I assume Montero’s rehab stint is nearly over.
C Ediel Rivera1-for-3, K
RF JoJo Jackson1-for-1
Good news: Jackson earns his first hit during his rehab stint. Bad news: He was immediately lifted for a pinch-runner.
3B Santiago Gomez0-for-3
They cleared the logjam in Low-A by returning Gomez here. While he hit only .170/.310/.255 in 15 Low-A games, he did steal nine bases in ten attempts and started playing better towards the end. It’s a numbers game.

RHP Omar Gonzalez (L, 1-3): 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 2 HR
4.30 ERA (37.2 IP, 24 H, 18 R, 18 ER, 5 HR, 22 BB, 39 K)

Game 2 (Tied, 1-1, in the bottom of the 8th. This game was suspended. I don’t see a date for conclusion as the FCL is off on Sundays)

LF Gabriel Lara1-for-2, 2B (5), K
  PH-LF Santiago Gomez1-for-1, CS (2)
Lara hadn’t played in a while, so that is likely why he wasn’t going to play the full game.
RF Luis Puello1-for-3, R, SB (3)
2B Gabriel Terrero1-for-3, RBI, SB (6), K

RHP Edinzo Marquez5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
The 20-year-old is pitching well: 2.66 ERA (44 IP, 36 H, 18 R, 13 ER, 4 HR, 16 BB, 34 K)

DSL Yankees (11-14) (Lost to the DSL Tigers 1, 8-7)

SS Mani Cedeno1-for-4, 2 R, BB, K
Cedeno has a little 4-game hitting streak going (4-for-15 with a pair of doubles and four runs).
CF Francisco Vilorio2-for-4, RBI, 2 R, BB
3B Richard Matic2-for-3, 3B (1), 2 RBI, CS (3), 2 BB
What a difference a year makes, as Matic is up to .313/.432/.594 in 84 PA (7 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 18 R). I don’t always like when prospects repeat levels, but he was 16 when he tried to conquer this place last year (.196/.333/.248). He will get to the FCL in 2026.
DH Justin Capellan0-for-3, SF, RBI, R, K
LF Estivenzon Montero2-for-5, 2B (1), 2 RBI, 3 K
.308/.384/.462 in 73 PA (1 double, 3 HR, 15 RBI, 8 R)

RHP Hector Moreno2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
The 17-year-old has struggled with control (understatement). Look at his numbers at your own risk.
RHP Anthony Mena4.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, HR

DSL Bombers (11-13) (Defeated DSL Colorado, 8-7)

SS Stiven Marinez1-for-2, RBI, R, 2 SB (12), CS (3), BB
Marinez is a year older than Mani Cedeno, and perhaps that is why his performance has been better. He is hitting .262/.466/.328 in 88 PA with 23 walks (26.1% – ridiculous. I love the DSL) and 16 strikeouts.
DH Queni Pineda1-for-1, 2B (4), RBI, 2 R, 3 BB
.288/.475/.407 in 80 PA. His OPS was .872 in 2024, so he has conquered this place.
CF Ruben Castillo0-for-3, BB
2B Christofer Reyes2-for-4, HR (1), 3 RBI, R, SB (15)
Reyes has three 2-hit games in his last four games played, raising his small sample triple slash from .156/.255/.178 to .232/.333/.321.
LF Jose Castro1-for-3, HR (2), RBI, R, CS (1), BB
The 19-year-old has only played in seven games and is making the most of it with his double and two homers.
RF David Carrera2-for-3, R, BB
The 18-year-old has declined from his 2024 campaign. Hopefully, he finishes strong.
1B Remy Veldhuisen4-for-4, 2B (2), RBI, R, 2 SB (3)
His first career 4-hit effort (6th multi-hit game this season)

LHP Andre Avila4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K
Avila calmed down a game that was high-scoring early. He allowed his squad to chip away and eventually win the game.
RHP Chaury Gomez (W, 1-0): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

Yankees MILB 6/19: Carlos Lagrange Strikes Out 12

Notes:

C Antonio Gomez was placed on the Development List for Somerset. Normally, I don’t care much about that list, but Gomez jumps out because he was, at one time, one of the top catching prospects in the system.

Gomez’s bat has stalled. This season, he is hitting .140/.225/.168 (26 wRC+) in 121 plate appearances for the Patriots. This comes after a (somewhat) promising 2024 campaign, where he hit .241/.329/.419 (111 wRC+) in 222 plate appearances between Tampa and Hudson Valley.

With Luke Weaver‘s return imminent, Jayvien Sandridge‘s stint in New York will likely be short. Sandridge, who has a similar profile to Jake Diekman (pitched in 705 games, believe it or not), starts his service time clock, gets his union card, and earns MLB medical benefits. It’s not easy to earn a living the way Diekman did, but Sandridge should get his MLB opportunities.

Injury Log

Scranton (36-33) (Lost to Louisville, 6-3)

3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4
We seemingly don’t get many ho-hum 1-for-4 efforts out of Rodriguez!
2B Jorbit Vivas0-for-3, HBP, K
CF Everson Pereira0-for-3, 2 R, BB, K
.246/.340/.480 in 203 PA (5 doubles, 12 HR, 34 RBI, 44 R, 5-for-6 SB, 11.3% BB, 32.5% K)
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-4, HR (9), 2 RBI, R, K
A 110.7 MPH, 404-foot blast. He is on a 6-game hitting streak (9-for-23) and has raised his triple slash to .289/.379/.491.
DH Brennen Davis0-for-3, SF, RBI, K
Davis is 15-for-43 (.349) with five homers and 14 RBI in 12 games for Scranton.
LF Bryan De La Cruz1-for-4, 2 K
C Alex Jackson1-for-4, K
RF Jose Rojas0-for-3, BB
SS Andrew Velazquez1-for-3, BB, K

RHP Cam Schlittler: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K
Schlittler reached 99.1 MPH and averaged 97.4. Furthermore, he generated an incredible 19 whiffs (and spread them out – 4-seamer (7), slider (5), sweeper (4), curveball (3)). With this type of performance often comes with a consequence: Pitches. He needed 94 to generate the 15 outs.  Since promotion: 2.35 ERA (15.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 24 K). Overall: 2.37 ERA (68.1 IP, 58 H, 23 R, 18 ER, 3 HR, 24 BB, 88 K). It’s going to become tempting to call him up and fans will start asking for it. When will that happen?  For now, they don’t need a starter so he can continue to work on what he needs to work on.
LHP Brent Headrick: (L, 2-1)  1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Colten Brewer1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Somerset (32-34) (Defeated New Hampshire, 5-1)

2B Roc Riggio0-for-5, R, 3 K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-5, HR (2), RBI, R, SB (13), K
Lombard Jr. has a double, triple, and homer in his last four games. He also has a pair of stolen bases. He has raised his OPS from .623 to .658. It was still under .600 (.589) on June 7th. Progress is being seen.
CF Spencer Jones0-for-3, R, BB, 2 K
2025: 16.8% BB, 35.2% K; 2024: 9.9% BB, 36.8% K.
C Rafael Flores2-for-4, HR (12), RBI, R
Flores breaks out of his little slump doing what he does best – hitting for power. He is up to 27 home runs in 130 Double-A games.
DH Dylan Jasso1-for-4, R, K
Jasso has a 9-game hitting streak (11-for-32). He won’t turn 23 until November and is 1.7 years younger than the Eastern League average.
RF Garrett Martin0-for-4, K
LF Cole Gabrielson2-for-4, RBI
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-4, 2B (10)
3B Max Burt0-for-4, 2 K

RHP Carlos Lagrange: (W, 2-1)  5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 12 K (new personal best)
Lagrange struck out seven in a row at one point. We don’t get full StatCast data at this level, but Lagrange generated 20 whiffs. At this level: 5.28 ERA (15.1 IP, 14 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 20 K). Those numbers are skewed by one bad start among his three. Overall, between here and Hudson Valley, he owns a 84/20 K/BB over 57 innings.
RHP Baron Stuart1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Indigo Diaz1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Luis Pacheco1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (38-26)

Their game against Jersey Shore was cancelled and will not be made up.

Someone asked me about Parks Harberwho has been missing from the lineup. He’s still listed as active but hasn’t played since June 12th. Harber was not in tonight’s posted lineup. If anything changes with his status, I will let you know.

Tampa (36-29) (Lost to Bradenton, 6-5, in a back-and-forth 11-inning affair)

DH Edgleen Perez0-for-4, HBP, K
CF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, 2B (14), 2 R, HBP, BB
SS Roderick Arias: 2-for-4, 2B (11), RBI, R, SB (18), CS (5), BB, 2 K
First goal: Get to .200 (he’s at .189). Arias has four multi-hit efforts in his last seven games and is 15-for-66 (.227) in June. He started the month 5-for-40, so we’ll take the improvement.
C Engelth Urena0-for-4, SF, RBI
3B Juan Matheus1-for-3, RBI, R, 2 BB, 2 K
RF Tyler Wilson1-for-5, R
Wilson has 23 hits, 13 runs, 12 RBI, and 11 walks in 15 June games.
LF Hans Montero1-for-5, RBI, SB (11), 2 K
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-5, K
2B Santiago Gomez1-for-5, RBI, SB (1), 3 K
Gomez earns his first Low-A hit.

RHP Gage Ziehl: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K (new personal best)
Poor Gage had to compete with the Schlittler and Lagrange efforts. He held up quite well, though, and generated nine whiffs with his slider. Season: 3.83 ERA (53.1 IP, 56 H, 28 R, 25 ER, 4 HR, 10 BB, 47 K).
RHP Jack Sokol1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.13 ERA (23 IP, 23 H, 11 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 18 K). Something tells me StatCast is “off” by showing us that he features six pitches, especially since four of them were used only once.
RHP Cade Austin : (L, 3-1)  2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR

FCL (17-17) (Defeated the Phillies, 4-3. The Yankees are five games behind the Tigers (four in the loss column)).

LF Wilson Rodriguez1-for-4, 2B (3), RBI, K

DH Ediel Rivera2-for-4, 2B (6), R, SB (6), K
.265/.351/.398 in 97 PA (6 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 6-for-8 SB). He is having a solid debut campaign.
2B Gabriel Terrero1-for-3, HR (2), 3 RBI, R, K
The 19-year-old has shown some pop in the rookie leagues (17 doubles, 11 HR, 59 RBI, 67 R in 100 games).
1B John Cristino2-for-3, R
He is a not-so-surprising (since he is 25) 12-for-36 in his professional debut.

RHP Omar Gonzalez4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 5 K
RHP Justin Lange (W, 1-0): 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Lange earns his first win since August 16th, 2023.

11 games: 0.00 ERA (12.1 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 5 BB, 9 K).
RHP Alexis Paulino (S, 3): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Paulino (22) is trying to cut down on the walk rate (128/88 K/BB in 97 career innings; 21/7 K/BB in 14.2 IP this year)

DSL Yankees (5-7) (Destroyed the DSL Tigers, 11-1)

SS Mani Cedeno3-for-5, 3B (1), 3 RBI, 2 R, K
The 16-year-old’s career is short (10 games), but this is his best career effort (first multi-hit game). He is 8-for-34 (.235/.381/.294) with five RBI and eight runs.
DH Francisco Vilorio0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 K

.308/.345/.538 in 29 PA.

DSL Bombers (6-6) (Defeated the DSL Mariners, 10-2)

DH Ruben Castillo2-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, R, SB (7), CS (1), BB, K
He is making the most of his 6-for-38 professional start (1 double, 2 triples, 3 RBI, 7 R, 7-for-8 SB)
SS Stiven Marinez1-for-4, RBI, R, SB (8), BB, K
Marinez begins his career 8-for-29 (3 RBI, 8 R, 8-for-8 SB, 8 BB, 9 K). So far, so good.
C Queni Pineda2-for-4, 2B (3), 2 RBI, R, BB

CF Browm Martinez3-for-5, HR (3), RBI, 2 R
The 18-year-old was solid in 2024 (.278/.386/.313) but is turning up the heat in 2025 (.423/.516/.769 with three homers). He doesn’t qualify for rate statistic leaderboards, but the league leaders in homers have four.

Yankees MILB 6/10: Pitching Rules the Night

Notes:

RHP Bryce Cunningham‘s return from the injured list was short-lived, as he is back on the list after only one start.

Cunningham has arguably impressed the most from last year’s pitching class, compiling a 1.93 ERA (3.33 FIP) over 46.2 innings with a 25.7% K, 6% BB, and 45.4% GB.

The Yankees released veteran LHP Brandon LeibrandtIn 41 innings for Scranton, Leibrandt posted a 2.85 ERA (4.70 FIP). He was recently placed on the inactive list before his release.

According to Erik Boland, RHP Jake Cousins has halted his rehab stint due to “feeling something” in his elbow. That’s never good. A pleasant surprise for the 2024 club, Cousins compiled a 2.37 ERA (4.06 FIP) with a 34.2% K and 12.9% BB over 38 innings.

Unless you live under a boulder, you already know about Giancarlo Stanton‘s rehab stint. It will be interesting to see what the Yankees do with their roster when he returns. No doubt that Pablo Reyes is their most dispensable player, but he does nothing more than occupy bench space. The biggest question is what happens with Ben Rice, who figures to lose the most playing time. Rice’s numbers have dipped lately, but a look at his Savant page shows a strong hitter who may be hitting in bad luck (his June BABIP is .176).

RHP Eric Reyzelman1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
Even when he has an “encouraging” outing, he allows a homer. One has to hope that something clicks to turn his season around.

Since promotion: 9-for-27 (3 doubles, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 6 R, 1-for-1 SB). Riggio has yet to draw a walk, but who in their right mind would complain about this output?  He has shown the ability to take walks in the lower minors.
DH Giancarlo Stanton2-for-3, 3 RBI, BB
If he is healthy, the rehab stint should be a quick one.
  PR-DH Cole Gabrielson: 0-for-0, R
As you should know by now, rehabbing players don’t play full games at first. The fact that Stanton doesn’t need to get any time in the field, however, hastens his stint.

CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, 2B (6), R, SB (8), K
16 of his 27 hits have gone for extra bases (6 doubles, 10 HR). You can’t look past the strikeout rate as that is the one thing that will keep him from reaching his potential. That said, he is hitting more flyballs and showing off his power.
