Yankees MILB 6/27: Spencer Jones Homers in First Scranton AB

Notes:

OF Everson Pereira, the top choice to come up when J.C. Escarra went on paternity leave, is also on the paternity list. The Yankees decided to go with a 25-man roster instead of calling up someone from the Jorbit Vivas, Jesus Rodriguez, CJ Alexander pool (all three are on the 40-man). Another player on the 40-man, Braden Shewmake, is injured. He reportedly was the second choice after Pereira.

OF Spencer Jonesas you likely know, was promoted to Scranton today. Typically speaking, top-top prospects don’t hang around in Triple-A for long. However, it seems probable that Jones will stay at Scranton for the remaining 2.5 months of the season. The promotion was earned, as Jones was red-hot and compiled 830 Double-A plate appearances.

Injury Log

Scranton (42-34) (Defeated Worcester, 4-2, to improve to 4-0 in the second half)

2B Jorbit Vivas0-for-3, 2 BB
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, R, SB (10), BB, 2 K
Rodriguez’s slump continues, showing us that slumps are inevitable for everyone. He is still hitting .321/.409/.407 in 259 PA at this level.
CF Spencer Jones1-for-5, HR (1), RBI, R, 2 K
Jones homered in his first Triple-A plate appearance (397 feet, 109.9 MPH). His 17th HR overall ties his personal best from last year in 72 fewer games. That’s crazy. Oh, and he keeps his streak of alternating home run days alive (he has 6 HR in his last 11 games – one every other day)
DH T.J. Rumfield1-for-3, BB, 2 K
   PR-DH Duke Ellis: 0-for-1, 2 SB (7), K
This is why I said I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the postseason. Aaron Boone used him only once in the postseason last year (pinch ran against Kansas City) before he was taken off the roster for the Guardians and Dodgers series.
RF Bryan De La Cruz2-for-2, R, 2 SB (6), 2 BB
LF CJ Alexander0-for-3, BB, 3 K
C Alex Jackson0-for-4, 3 K
1B Jose Rojas2-for-2, HR (12), 2 RBI, R, 2 BB
Rojas’ 125th career minor league homer (681 games)
SS Andrew Velazquez1-for-3, SAC

RHP Sean Boyle: (W, 6-5)  5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, HR
4.46 ERA (74.2 IP, 68 H, 43 R, 37 ER, 9 HR, 25 BB, 72 K). Boyle (28) screams of a pitcher who will get a few MLB chances as he grinds out a professional career. The Yankees invited him to spring training this year, and he is a minor league free agent after the season (this is his 7th minor league campaign). This assumes the Yankees aren’t going to add him to the 40-man.
LHP Jayvien Sandridge1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
0.96 ERA (9.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 18 K). Overall, he owns a 25/7 K/BB over 14.1 innings.
RHP Clayton Beeter (S, 2): 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Beeter maxed at 97.5 MPH. He owns a 1.02 ERA in 17.2 IP (9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 14 BB, 29 K)

Somerset (36-37) (Lost to Erie, 6-2)

SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-3, R, SB (14), 2 BB
Lombard Jr. has 55 walks and 25 stolen bases in 70 games.  He is 20-for-88 (.227; 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 19 R, 7-for-8 SB) in June (started the month 3-for-21). That doesn’t suggest he is “hot” but the adjustments are showing up.
C Rafael Flores0-for-3, BB, 3 K
2B Roc Riggio1-for-2, R, HBP, BB, K
3B Dylan Jasso0-for-4, 2 K
DH Brendan Jones1-for-4, 2B (4), 2 RBI, K
Jones was heating up before a little 0-for-11 slump. There is talent here – he is just having a tough time early in his Double-A journey.
CF Garrett Martin0-for-3, SB (14), CI
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-4, 2 K
LF Cole Gabrielson1-for-3, BB, K
RF Cam Eden0-for-4, K

RHP Trent Sellers4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K
Sellers needed 91 pitches to earn 14 outs, but the outing was impressive. Striking hitters out hasn’t been an issue for the 25-year-old, as he has 68 in 55.1 innings this year and 168 in 139 innings in his career. The walk rate needs work (26 this season; 66 in his career). It’s a mixed bag and one wonders if his future is in the bullpen.
RHP Cole Ayers: (L, 0-1)  1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Hayden Merda2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
Merda struggled mightily in his Somerset debut – while not perfect, a better performance tonight.
RHP Kelly Austin: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Ryan Anderson0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Anderson allowed both of Austin’s baserunners to score.

Hudson Valley (42-29) (Split two games against Wilmington)

Game 1 (Won, 2-0, in the conclusion of last night’s game)

LF Jackson Castillo0-for-4
CF Dillon Lewis2-for-4
RF Coby Morales0-for-4, 2 K
2B Jose Colmenares2-for-4, R, SB (9), K
SS Alexander Vargas2-for-4, RBI, R
1B Josh Moylan2-for-4
3B Brenny Escanio0-for-4, K
C Tomas Frick2-for-4, RBI, 2 K
.231/.364/.385 in 132 PA. Frick does his job with his medium-sized usage (he has played in 37 of their 71 games)
DH Duncan Pastore0-for-2, BB, K

LHP Kyle Carr4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
2.86 ERA (63 IP, 44 H, 28 R, 20 ER, 5 HR, 32 BB, 50 K). There is good and not-so-good in that profile.
RHP Ocean Gabonia (W, 1-2): 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Huey Morrill2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
0.62 ERA (29 IP, 13 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 11 BB, 22 K)
RHP Bryce Warrecker (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
0.85 ERA (31.2 IP, 14 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 37 K). Have I mentioned how dominant the 6’8″ right-hander has been?

Game 2 (Lost, 11-0)

CF Jackson Castillo0-for-4, K
The 0-for-8 doubleheader drops his triple slash to .221/.318/.303 in 283 PA. His .288/.345/.438 triple slash with RISP has allowed him to drive home 35 runs in 62 games.
DH Dillon Lewis1-for-3, 2B (3)
Since promotion: .200/.250/.411 in 96 PA. Nine of his 18 hits have gone for extra bases (3 doubles, 2 triples, 4 HR). He is a fun prospect to follow, since you can tell that the tools exist.
RF Coby Morales0-for-3, 2 K
2B Jose Colmenares: 0-for-3, K
3B Alexander Vargas1-for-2, BB
C Manuel Palencia0-for-3, 2 K
1B Josh Moylan1-for-3, 2 K
Moylan hasn’t been able to get anything going (.162/.309/.263 in 243 PA). Last season, at this level, he showed some promise with his .246/.357/.381 line in 406 plate appearances.
SS Brenny Escanio1-for-2, BB, K
LF Luis Durango0-for-3, K

LHP Griffin Herring (L, 1-1): 3 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, HR
Proof that everyone has bad days. This spiked his combined ERA to 1.64 (71.1 IP, 45 H, 15 R, 13 ER, 3 HR, 27 BB, 83 K). He entered the night with the lowest ERA amongst all minor league pitchers (excluding those in the rookie leagues). It’s possible (probable) that he will wake up tomorrow nearly tied for first with…fellow Yankees’ farmhand Brendan Beck. Beck’s ERA is 1.6409 while Herring’s is 1.6402.
RHP Sebastian Keane1.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Jordany Ventura1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Tampa (39-33) (Defeated Ft. Myers, 5-3)

C Edgleen Perez2-for-3, R, SB (5), 2 BB
Perez is hopefully heating up, as this is his third straight multi-hit effort. He is up to .216/.371/.242 in 286 plate appearances with an impressive 51 walks (17.8%).
RF Brian Sanchez1-for-4, R, SB (20), 3 K
SS Roderick Arias1-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, 2 R, HBP
When the Yankees handed him a trillion dollars (give or take a few million), this is what they envisioned. It hasn’t happened consistently.
DH Engelth Urena0-for-4, BB, K
3B Juan Matheus2-for-4, 2 SB (26), BB, K
Matheus is feeling frisky on the basepaths lately. He is 12-for-14 in June and has at least one stolen base in five straight games. This surge has jumped him to first place in stolen bases within the organization.
LF Hans Montero1-for-3, 2B (6), RBI, SB (13), BB, K
CF Marshall Toole0-for-3, BB, K
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-4, K
2B Santiago Gomez2-for-3, HR (1), RBI, 3 SB (6), BB, K
As I said the other day, Gomez can run. He just needs to consistently get on base to showcase it. He has 70 stolen bases in 156 career games. As for the power, that is not his forte. This was his 9th career homer.

LHP Xavier Rivas (W, 2-1): 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 13 K (previous personal best was 8)
Rivas allowed two runs in the sixth but was otherwise spectacular tonight.  At this level: 3.47 ERA (23.1 IP, 17 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 28 K)
RHP Jack Sokol1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
2.84 ERA (25.1 IP, 23 H, 11 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 19 K).  He hasn’t allowed a run in 9.1 June innings.
RHP Cade Austin: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.86 ERA (28.1 IP, 27 H, 16 R, 9 ER, 3 HR, 11 BB, 31 K)
RHP Brady Kirtner: (S, 3) 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
2.41 ERA (37.1 IP, 23 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 2 HR, 17 BB, 42 K). Kirtner has been steady in his debut campaign, with very few hiccups.

FCL (19-21) (Defeated the Phillies, 2-0)

LF Wilson Rodriguez0-for-2, BB
C Ediel Rivera: 0-for-2, HBP
RF Luis Puello1-for-2, R
2B Gabriel Terrero1-for-2
1B John Cristino1-for-1, HR (2), 2 RBI, R, HBP
It’s his debut campaign, but he is doing what a 25-year-old should do in the FCL: 15-for-41 (.366) with a double and two home runs.

RHP Edinzo Marquez (W, 1-2): 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
It counts as a CG in the record books! He owns a 3.00 ERA in eight starts (39 IP, 33 H, 18 R, 13 ER, 4 HR, 15 BB, 29 K). Can the 20-year-old get a taste of Low-A Tampa after the FCL season concludes? Certainly.

DSL Yankees (8-10) (Crushed DSL Phillies White, 11-2. This game went seven innings)

SS Mani Cedeno0-for-3, RBI, R, HBP, K
CF Isaias Castillo0-for-2, RBI, R, 2 BB
.333/.469/.590 in 49 PA (3 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 9 R, 9-for-9 SB, 10 BB, 11 K). His career has started with a 12-game on-base streak.
3B Richard Matic2-for-3, RBI, 2 R, SB (3), BB
.326/.441/.630 in 59 PA (5 doubles, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 14 R, 11 BB, 16 K). Matic struggled here as a 16-year-old. The difference one year can make, even as a teenager.
DH Justin Capellan0-for-2, RBI, R, SB (6), 2 BB, K
2B Alfred Ciriaco1-for-3, R, BB
C Diego Flores0-for-3, RBI, R, BB
LF Angel Ventura1-for-3, RBI, 2 R, SB (4), BB
Ventura is 22-for-25 stealing bases in 44 career games.
RF Alfiery Matos0-for-3, R, SB (3), BB, 2 K
1B Jose Lavagnino2-for-3, 2B (1), 3 RBI, R, BB
The 18-year-old is 4-for-17 in his debut campaign.

LHP Carlos De La Rosa4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K
4.38 ERA (12.1 IP, 14 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 22 K). What is the most impressive part of that stat line? If you need more than one guess, take up a new hobby.
RHP Rafael Arias (W, 2-0): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K

DSL Bombers (6-11) (Followed up their 20-19 loss to the DSL Mets Orange with a 15-10 loss to the DSL Cardinals. This game went nine innings. Note: In the rookie leagues, the two managers come to an agreement on whether a game will go seven or nine innings)

CF Browm Martinez2-for-4, 2 2B (3), 2 RBI, 3 R, SB (9), HBP
He’s making a mockery of this level at this point: .390/.490/.683 in 49 PA (3 doubles, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 17 R, 9-for-10 SB). The 18-year-old was pretty good in 38 games here last year as well. The problem is that time is running out on the FCL season, making a promotion unlikely.
SS Christofer Reyes2-for-2, 3 SB (13), CS (1), BB
The good news is the stolen bases. The bad news is that he was pinch-ran for late in the game, which likely means injury.
   PR-SS Stiven Marinez0-for-1, RBI, R, BB
Adding to the “injury” theory is that they replaced him with one of their top DSL prospects. Usually, when a top prospect has a scheduled day off, he isn’t coming in to pinch-run.
DH David Carrera0-for-2, RBI, RS, SB (5), 3 BB, 2 K
3B Leni Done1-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 BB
.244/.392/.366 in 51 PA.
2B Adrian Feliz2-for-5, R, CS (2)
.250/.276/.286 in 29 PA. Like many down here, Feliz is only 16.
C Carlos Rodon1-for-4, 2B (2), R, BB, 2 K
RF Eddinson Charles1-for-5, RBI, R
1B Edgar Jimenez2-for-5, 2 2B (3), RBI, 2 R, K
The 18-year-old is 6-for-15 with three doubles and four RBI.

For the second day in a row, there isn’t a pitching line worth mentioning.

Yankees MILB 6/19: Carlos Lagrange Strikes Out 12

Notes:

C Antonio Gomez was placed on the Development List for Somerset. Normally, I don’t care much about that list, but Gomez jumps out because he was, at one time, one of the top catching prospects in the system.

Gomez’s bat has stalled. This season, he is hitting .140/.225/.168 (26 wRC+) in 121 plate appearances for the Patriots. This comes after a (somewhat) promising 2024 campaign, where he hit .241/.329/.419 (111 wRC+) in 222 plate appearances between Tampa and Hudson Valley.

With Luke Weaver‘s return imminent, Jayvien Sandridge‘s stint in New York will likely be short. Sandridge, who has a similar profile to Jake Diekman (pitched in 705 games, believe it or not), starts his service time clock, gets his union card, and earns MLB medical benefits. It’s not easy to earn a living the way Diekman did, but Sandridge should get his MLB opportunities.

Injury Log

Scranton (36-33) (Lost to Louisville, 6-3)

3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4
We seemingly don’t get many ho-hum 1-for-4 efforts out of Rodriguez!
2B Jorbit Vivas0-for-3, HBP, K
CF Everson Pereira0-for-3, 2 R, BB, K
.246/.340/.480 in 203 PA (5 doubles, 12 HR, 34 RBI, 44 R, 5-for-6 SB, 11.3% BB, 32.5% K)
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-4, HR (9), 2 RBI, R, K
A 110.7 MPH, 404-foot blast. He is on a 6-game hitting streak (9-for-23) and has raised his triple slash to .289/.379/.491.
DH Brennen Davis0-for-3, SF, RBI, K
Davis is 15-for-43 (.349) with five homers and 14 RBI in 12 games for Scranton.
LF Bryan De La Cruz1-for-4, 2 K
C Alex Jackson1-for-4, K
RF Jose Rojas0-for-3, BB
SS Andrew Velazquez1-for-3, BB, K

RHP Cam Schlittler: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K
Schlittler reached 99.1 MPH and averaged 97.4. Furthermore, he generated an incredible 19 whiffs (and spread them out – 4-seamer (7), slider (5), sweeper (4), curveball (3)). With this type of performance often comes with a consequence: Pitches. He needed 94 to generate the 15 outs.  Since promotion: 2.35 ERA (15.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 24 K). Overall: 2.37 ERA (68.1 IP, 58 H, 23 R, 18 ER, 3 HR, 24 BB, 88 K). It’s going to become tempting to call him up and fans will start asking for it. When will that happen?  For now, they don’t need a starter so he can continue to work on what he needs to work on.
LHP Brent Headrick: (L, 2-1)  1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Colten Brewer1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Somerset (32-34) (Defeated New Hampshire, 5-1)

2B Roc Riggio0-for-5, R, 3 K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-5, HR (2), RBI, R, SB (13), K
Lombard Jr. has a double, triple, and homer in his last four games. He also has a pair of stolen bases. He has raised his OPS from .623 to .658. It was still under .600 (.589) on June 7th. Progress is being seen.
CF Spencer Jones0-for-3, R, BB, 2 K
2025: 16.8% BB, 35.2% K; 2024: 9.9% BB, 36.8% K.
C Rafael Flores2-for-4, HR (12), RBI, R
Flores breaks out of his little slump doing what he does best – hitting for power. He is up to 27 home runs in 130 Double-A games.
DH Dylan Jasso1-for-4, R, K
Jasso has a 9-game hitting streak (11-for-32). He won’t turn 23 until November and is 1.7 years younger than the Eastern League average.
RF Garrett Martin0-for-4, K
LF Cole Gabrielson2-for-4, RBI
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-4, 2B (10)
3B Max Burt0-for-4, 2 K

RHP Carlos Lagrange: (W, 2-1)  5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 12 K (new personal best)
Lagrange struck out seven in a row at one point. We don’t get full StatCast data at this level, but Lagrange generated 20 whiffs. At this level: 5.28 ERA (15.1 IP, 14 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 20 K). Those numbers are skewed by one bad start among his three. Overall, between here and Hudson Valley, he owns a 84/20 K/BB over 57 innings.
RHP Baron Stuart1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Indigo Diaz1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Luis Pacheco1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (38-26)

Their game against Jersey Shore was cancelled and will not be made up.

Someone asked me about Parks Harberwho has been missing from the lineup. He’s still listed as active but hasn’t played since June 12th. Harber was not in tonight’s posted lineup. If anything changes with his status, I will let you know.

Tampa (36-29) (Lost to Bradenton, 6-5, in a back-and-forth 11-inning affair)

DH Edgleen Perez0-for-4, HBP, K
CF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, 2B (14), 2 R, HBP, BB
SS Roderick Arias: 2-for-4, 2B (11), RBI, R, SB (18), CS (5), BB, 2 K
First goal: Get to .200 (he’s at .189). Arias has four multi-hit efforts in his last seven games and is 15-for-66 (.227) in June. He started the month 5-for-40, so we’ll take the improvement.
C Engelth Urena0-for-4, SF, RBI
3B Juan Matheus1-for-3, RBI, R, 2 BB, 2 K
RF Tyler Wilson1-for-5, R
Wilson has 23 hits, 13 runs, 12 RBI, and 11 walks in 15 June games.
LF Hans Montero1-for-5, RBI, SB (11), 2 K
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-5, K
2B Santiago Gomez1-for-5, RBI, SB (1), 3 K
Gomez earns his first Low-A hit.

RHP Gage Ziehl: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K (new personal best)
Poor Gage had to compete with the Schlittler and Lagrange efforts. He held up quite well, though, and generated nine whiffs with his slider. Season: 3.83 ERA (53.1 IP, 56 H, 28 R, 25 ER, 4 HR, 10 BB, 47 K).
RHP Jack Sokol1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.13 ERA (23 IP, 23 H, 11 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 18 K). Something tells me StatCast is “off” by showing us that he features six pitches, especially since four of them were used only once.
RHP Cade Austin : (L, 3-1)  2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR

FCL (17-17) (Defeated the Phillies, 4-3. The Yankees are five games behind the Tigers (four in the loss column)).

C Manuel Palencia2-for-4
.306/.376/.418 in 109 PA. He is 16-for-39 (.410) in June.
LF Wilson Rodriguez1-for-4, 2B (3), RBI, K
.321/.406/.482 in 65 PA. I don’t write these on Monday and I forgot to note on Tuesday that he hit his second home run that day.
DH Ediel Rivera2-for-4, 2B (6), R, SB (6), K
.265/.351/.398 in 97 PA (6 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 6-for-8 SB). He is having a solid debut campaign.
2B Gabriel Terrero1-for-3, HR (2), 3 RBI, R, K
The 19-year-old has shown some pop in the rookie leagues (17 doubles, 11 HR, 59 RBI, 67 R in 100 games).
1B John Cristino2-for-3, R
He is a not-so-surprising (since he is 25) 12-for-36 in his professional debut.

RHP Omar Gonzalez4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 5 K
RHP Justin Lange (W, 1-0): 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Lange earns his first win since August 16th, 2023.
RHP Chance Nolan: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
11 games: 0.00 ERA (12.1 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 5 BB, 9 K).
RHP Alexis Paulino (S, 3): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Paulino (22) is trying to cut down on the walk rate (128/88 K/BB in 97 career innings; 21/7 K/BB in 14.2 IP this year)

DSL Yankees (5-7) (Destroyed the DSL Tigers, 11-1)

SS Mani Cedeno3-for-5, 3B (1), 3 RBI, 2 R, K
The 16-year-old’s career is short (10 games), but this is his best career effort (first multi-hit game). He is 8-for-34 (.235/.381/.294) with five RBI and eight runs.
DH Francisco Vilorio0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 K
2B Carlos Bello0-for-2, 2 R, SB (4), 2 BB, K
The 17-year-old’s value has been tied into walks thus far (ten walks in ten games).
3B Richard Matic0-for-1, SF, RBI, R, 2 BB, K
C Justin Capellan2-for-3, 2B (3), 2 RBI, R
.308/.345/.538 in 29 PA.
LF Isaias Castillo2-for-4, 2B (3), 2 RBI, R, SB (7)
The 17-year-old continues his solid play in his professional debut (9-for-22 (.409); 3 doubles, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R, 7-for-7 SB, 4 BB, 5 K)
CF Angel Ventura2-for-4, R, K
6-for-24 with a pair of doubles and a triple.
1B Jose Lavagnino0-for-3, SF, RBI
The 17-year-old is off to a 2-for-13 start to his professional career.
RF Alfiery Matos2-for-3, 3 R, BB
The 17-year-old compiles his first career multi-hit game.

RHP Jhosneyker Colina (W, 1-0):  5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
Colina earns his first professional win in his third start. The 17-year-old owns a 3.48 ERA in 10.1 innings with a 9/7 K/BB.

DSL Bombers (6-6) (Defeated the DSL Mariners, 10-2)

DH Ruben Castillo2-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, R, SB (7), CS (1), BB, K
He is making the most of his 6-for-38 professional start (1 double, 2 triples, 3 RBI, 7 R, 7-for-8 SB)
SS Stiven Marinez1-for-4, RBI, R, SB (8), BB, K
Marinez begins his career 8-for-29 (3 RBI, 8 R, 8-for-8 SB, 8 BB, 9 K). So far, so good.
C Queni Pineda2-for-4, 2B (3), 2 RBI, R, BB
Pineda is cruising along (12-for-34, 3 doubles, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 7 R, 4-for-4 SB, 7 BB, 5 K)
CF Browm Martinez3-for-5, HR (3), RBI, 2 R
The 18-year-old was solid in 2024 (.278/.386/.313) but is turning up the heat in 2025 (.423/.516/.769 with three homers). He doesn’t qualify for rate statistic leaderboards, but the league leaders in homers have four.
LF David Carrera2-for-4, R, CS (3), BB

RHP Diego Carrillo (W, 2-0): 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
6.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 7 K

Yankees MILB 6/18: Roc Riggio, Spencer Jones Homer

Notes:

Utilityman Pablo Reyes was outrighted to Scranton after clearing waivers.

As a general reminder, I am not a scout. I don’t work for the Yankees. When I hype up someone like Jesus Rodriguez, I can’t tell you how the Yankees feel about him internally. Guess what? Nobody who writes or talks about these guys has any idea either. I have never been afraid to admit that.

However, I will always share my personal opinions and try to discern trends. I will provide the statistical anecdotes and Savant readings when they are available.

When they promote prospects, there is a reason for it. When they don’t, there is a reason for it. Trying to read between the lines is fun for me, even if my opinion won’t always be correct.

“Anyone who claims they know everything about baseball prospects is lying”.

Injury Log

Scranton (36-32) (Lost to Louisville, 8-1. Louisville had two pitchers who hit 100+ MPH: Chase Burns (7 IP, 7 K) and Zach Maxwell)

C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, 2 K
One concern with any prospect is how they react to velocity. You can’t tell anything by today alone, but he missed 100.1 and 98.7 MPH fastballs and grounded out (86.9 MPH) on a 99.1 MPH fastball. We can use that as a point of reference if nothing else.
2B Jorbit Vivas0-for-4
LF Everson Pereira0-for-3, 2 K
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-3, 2B (15), R
Rumfield has a 5-game hitting streak (7-for-19; 2 doubles, 1 triple, 5 RBI).
3B CJ Alexander0-for-3, K
RF Bryan De La Cruz0-for-2, SF, RBI, 2 K

DH Jose Reyes0-for-3, 2 K
SS Braden Shewmake1-for-3, 2B (7), K
Shewmake has an 11-game hitting streak. He is hitting .255/.350/.409 in 158 PA (.186/.307/.289 before the streak). No, he isn’t an Anthony Volpe replacement, even if you are tempted to ask.
CF Ismael Munguia1-for-3, CS (5)

RHP Erick Leal (L, 1-7): 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 3 HR

As reliever: 3.29 ERA (13.2 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 8 BB, 14 K). Overall: 6.05 ERA (41.2 IP, 46 H, 29 R, 28 ER, 3 HR, 27 BB, 40 K)
RHP Geoff Hartlieb0.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR

Somerset (31-34) (Swept a doubleheader against New Hampshire)

Game 1 (Won, 5-3)

2B Roc Riggio2-for-4, HR (6), 2 RBI, R, SB (2), K
Riggio takes over the organizational lead with his 13th home run (6 for Somerset, 6 for Hudson Valley, 1 in the FCL).
SS George Lombard Jr.1-for-4, 2B (3), R, 2 K
Lombard Jr. has a double, triple, and homer in his last six games.
DH Spencer Jones1-for-2, RBI, SB (9), 2 BB, K
C Rafael Flores0-for-4, 3 K
3B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, 2 K
LF Garrett Martin1-for-3, R, K
CF Brendan Jones1-for-2, 3B (1), RBI, CS (1), BB
Jones has four triples between here and Hudson Valley.
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-3, R, SB (6), 2 K
RF Cole Gabrielson0-for-2, R, BB, K

RHP Marcus Stroman3.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
With JT Brubaker activated today, it will be interesting to see how the Yankees handle Stroman when he is ready. Yerry De los Santos would be the most logical to go back to Scranton.
RHP Bailey Dees (W, 2-4): 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
For Somerset: 4.53 ERA (49.2 IP, 45 H, 26 R, 25 ER, 7 HR, 26 BB, 62 K)
RHP Danny Watson (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Watson had a 16.71 ERA in April. Since: 4.11 ERA (15.1 IP, 14 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 14 K). He hasn’t allowed a walk in seven straight appearances.

Game 2 (Won, 6-1)

2B Roc Riggio: 2-for-3, RBI, R, 2 SB (4), K
Riggio doesn’t have blazing speed, but he is an aggressive baserunner. That allowed him to be an impressive 27-for-33 stealing bases in 2024, but he is only 6-for-11 in 2025.
SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-3, 2 R, SB (12), BB
Lombard Jr. is 23-for-27 stealing bases between here and Hudson Valley (66-for-80 (82.5%) in his career). The bat isn’t there yet. I remain confident it will get there.
CF Spencer Jones1-for-2, HR (13), 2 RBI, R, 2 BB, K
Jones ties Riggio for the organizational home run lead.  He has a 6-game hitting streak (9-for-19; 1 double, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 7 R, 5 BB, 5 K) and owns a .943 OPS.
DH Rafael Flores0-for-2, R, 2 BB
Flores is in a 0-for-17 slump.
1B Dylan Jasso: 1-for-4, 2B (10), 3 RBI
Jasso had a big bases-clearing double.  He has an 8-game hitting streak (10-for-28) and is hitting .281/.346/.484 in 239 PA.
LF Brendan Jones0-for-3, 2 K
RF Cam Eden0-for-3, 2 K
C Diomedes Hernandez0-for-3, 2 K
3B Max Burt1-for-2, 2B (5), R

RHP Trystan Vrieling3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Slowly, but surely, building up the pitching count. He wasn’t efficient tonight (72), but I still consider him to be in spring training mode. For Somerset: 4.71 ERA (21 IP, 24 H, 12 R, 11 ER, 3 HR, 11 BB, 14 K).
LHP Ryan Anderson (W, 1-1): 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Mason Vinyard: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Kelly Austin:   1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (38-26) (Defeated Jersey Shore, 9-2)

CF Jackson Castillo: 1-for-3, RBI, 3 R, SB (13), HBP, BB, K
DH Dillon Lewis1-for-5, HR (3; grand slam), 4 RBI, R, K
If you are only going to compile one hit, make it a special one. Between Tampa and Hudson Valley, he has ten doubles, three triples, 12 home runs, 38 RBI, 39 runs, and 15 stolen bases in 16 attempts. There are warts (not hitting for much average) but he has dropped his K% since being promoted. Small sample blip or a trend?
1B Coby Morales1-for-5, HR (6), 2 RBI, R, 2 K
Morales has six homers in 58 games (five in 123 games entering this season)
C Omar Martinez0-for-4, RBI, 2 K
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-3, SB (8), BB
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, HR (2), RBI, R
LF Luis Durango1-for-3, R, CS (4), HBP
3B Josh Moylan0-for-3, R, BB, K
RF Anthony Hall1-for-4, R, 2 K

RHP Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz: (W, 5-2)  6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
2.59 ERA (66 IP, 41 H, 22 R, 19 ER, 0 HR, 28 BB, 78 K). He wasn’t completely on his game tonight, but what a season. No home runs in 66 innings is ridiculous.
RHP Hayden Merda1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Huey Morrill1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
0.39 ERA (23 IP, 11 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 7 BB, 18 K)
RHP Ocean Gabonia1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

Tampa (36-28) (Defeated Bradenton, 8-6)

C Edgleen Perez1-for-4, 2B (6), 2 R, BB
Perez caught two runners out of six trying to steal. He is 13-for-82 (15.9%) this season. That is down considerably from his rookie league days (26% last season, for example), which is hardly surprising. As for the offense, he has a pair of doubles in his last three games.
CF Brian Sanchez: 1-for-5, 2 R, 2 K
SS Roderick Arias: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, 3 R, BB
Is Arias heating up? He has three multi-hit efforts in his last six games, increasing his triple slash from .152/.302/.239 to .181/.316/.263. I never claimed the jump was significant.
DH Engelth Urena2-for-5, HR (6), 3 RBI, R, 3 K
Urena (20) ends an 18-game homerless streak. Power is his game (13 doubles, 11 HR in 51 rookie league games). Can he find it consistently as he navigates full-season leagues?
3B Juan Matheus1-for-4, RBI
LF Tyler Wilson3-for-4, 2 RBI, K
Wilson continues his incredible June (22-for-46; 2 doubles, 12 RBI, 12 R, 11 BB, 7 K). The 22-year-old is hitting .305/.389/.394 in 244 plate appearances as he tries to earn a promotion. The Florida State League leans towards pitching, so his .305 batting average ranks third.
1B Hans Montero1-for-4, K
RF Marshall Toole2-for-4, CS (2)
.308/.408/.483 in 169 PA. Toole is playing well, though he doesn’t have enough plate appearances to qualify for rate statistic leader boards.
2B Santiago Gomez0-for-3, CS (1), HBP, K

RHP Brandon Decker2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
Decker tossed 56 pitches (34 strikes), the most pitches he has thrown this year. This was his fifth consecutive start after starting his career with eight relief appearances. He owns a 2.97 ERA (30.1 IP, 27 H, 15 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 30 K).
RHP Cole Zaffiro2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 HR
RHP Brady Kirtner: (W, 4-2)  1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Chris Veach: (S, 4) 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
1.69 ERA (26.2 IP, 19 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 3 HR, 16 BB, 39 K). Veach is allowing a few too many walks, but is also missing bats. He generated ten whiffs on 13 swings, including six on his bread-and-butter changeup. I like the differential in his pitches (averaged 92.2 with his 4-seamer, 91.7 with his sinker, and 76.7 with his change).

Injury Log

Scranton (28-30) (Defeated St. Paul, 5-1)

C Jesus Rodriguez: 1-for-4, BB, K
Reaching base twice in five plate appearances feels like a “meh” night for Rodriguez. He is 8-for-21 (.381) with four doubles in his last six games.
3B Jorbit Vivas1-for-3, BB
LF Everson Pereira1-for-4, K
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-4, K
DH Alex Jackson1-for-4, 2B (4), R, K
RF Bryan De La Cruz1-for-3, HR (4), RBI, R, BB
De La Cruz is 9-for-23 with a double and two homers in his last six games.
SS Braden Shewmake2-for-4, RBI, R
Shewmake may beg to stay here (series: 7-for-16; 2 doubles, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 5 R). He had a .596 OPS entering this series. It is now .700.
CF Ismael Munguia: 1-for-4, 2B (8), RBI, R, SB (14)
2B Jake Gatewood0-for-4, 2 K

RHP Allan Winans: (W, 5-0)  5.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K
0.23 ERA (39 IP, 28 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 11 BB, 45 K). This is insanity. He has been so good that 5.2 scoreless innings dropped his ERA only 0.04 points.
RHP Leonardo Pestana1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Clayton Beeter1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Beeter reached 98.6 MPH with his fastball.
RHP Eric Reyzelman: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, HR
Before 2025 started, I would have told you that Reyzelman was on the verge of breaking into MLB. I don’t know what is wrong, but there is no denying that he has fallen off (25 walks in 23 innings).
RHP Colten Brewer (S, 4): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Somerset (25-29) (Defeated Binghamton, 10-4)

2B Roc Riggio: 2-for-5, 2B (1), HR (1), 2 RBI, R, K
Riggio launches his first Double-A home run. He has eight homers in 25 games this season.
SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-4, R, BB, 3 K
C Rafael Flores3-for-5, 3 R, K
Flores has seven 3-hit games this season. He is hitting .284/.345/.507 in 232 PA. He is a hitter. That’s the best way to describe him.
3B Dylan Jasso: 2-for-4, 2B (9), 3 RBI, R, BB, 2 K
.274/.337/.484 in 208 PA. The undrafted free agent has been solid since Day 1 this year. I have no idea if he can do it, but I wonder if they would see if he can play LF in addition to 1B/2B/3B.
CF Brendan Jones0-for-2, SF, RBI, R, 2 BB, 2 K
Jones is 1-for-13 since his promotion. Growing pains.
RF Garrett Martin1-for-4, RBI, R, SB (10), 2 K
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-4, RBI, BB, 2 K
DH Cole Gabrielson1-for-4, 2 RBI, BB, 3 K
LF Cam Eden2-for-5, 2 2B (2), R, 3 K

RHP Carlos Lagrange: (W, 1-0)  6 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 2 HR
Lagrange impresses in his Double-A debut (allowed a 2-run home run in the first before settling in). Including his time with Hudson Valley, he owns a 70/13 K/BB over 47.2 innings. Entering this season, he had a 133/63 K/BB over 95.2 innings. The improvement in his walk rate is remarkable. His 70 strikeouts place him in the top ten in all of minor league baseball, but that could have changed based on other outings tonight.
RHP Mason Vinyard1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Cole Ayers1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
LHP Will Brian1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
2.55 ERA (17.2 IP, 15 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 7 BB, 22 K)

Hudson Valley (34-20) (Shut down Aberdeen, 6-0)

CF Dillon Lewis1-for-5, RBI
Lewis is 5-for-21 (.238) with a triple and a homer since his promotion.
LF Jackson Castillo2-for-3, RBI, 2 R, SB (6), HBP, BB, K
Castillo is 8-for-29 (.276) in his seven games. Hopefully, he is coming out of his slump.
DH Coby Morales1-for-4, RBI, BB, 2 K
Morales has a 5-game hitting streak.
3B Parks Harber1-for-4, RBI, R, BB
C Omar Martinez2-for-5, 2B (6), HR (7), 2 RBI, R, K
Martinez has 21 doubles and 20 homers in 150 High-A games. He is on a 5-game hitting streak.
1B Josh Moylan0-for-4, BB, 2 K
SS Brenny Escanio1-for-4, K
RF Anthony Hall0-for-4, R, K
2B Duncan Pastore1-for-3, R, K
  2B Jose Colmenares0-for-1, K

RHP Bailey Dees: (W, 1-0) 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K
Dees spent all of 2024 and the first two months of 2025 in Somerset. It’s not fun getting demoted, but he handled it well tonight. Hard to know if this is a permanent assignment or if they needed an arm for tonight’s start.
RHP Tyrone Yulie1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
2.96 ERA (18.1 IP, 14 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 9 BB, 24 K). He is handling the bullpen just fine, though he will eventually be asked to pitch on shorter rest.
RHP Huey Morrill1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
0.46 ERA (19.2 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 15 K)

Tampa (30-24) (Knocked out Jupiter, 11-4. 11 runs, 7 hits, 15 walks. They are scorching hot. After going 9-for-9 stealing bases last night, they went 7-for-7 tonight. Think they have a scouting report?)

DH Roderick Arias0-for-2, 3 R, 3 SB (16), 4 BB, 2 K
His .160 batting average comes with a .327 OBP, so there’s that. He once had a 5-walk game (2022), and this is his second 3-SB effort.
RF Brian Sanchez: 1-for-3, 2B (12), RBI, 4 R, SB (13), 3 BB
Nowhere in my Pitching for Dummies manual does it refer to walking the first two batters seven times as an effective strategy. Sanchez is hitting .287/.367/.442 in 150 PA (12 doubles, 4 triples, 23 RBI, 16 R, 13-for-17 SB, 11.3% BB, 25.3% K). He is on a 5-game hitting streak (has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games).
C Edgleen Perez0-for-4, RBI, HBP, BB, K
SS Juan Matheus: 1-for-3, RBI, 3 BB
1B Tyler Wilson: 1-for-5, SF, 3 RBI, K
.265/.353/.365 in 207 PA (6 doubles, 4 HR, 27 RBI, 26 R, 14-for-18 SB, 12.1% BB, 25.6% K). Wilson was hitting .219/.315/.228 after games of May 11th.
LF Austin Green1-for-4, BB, 2 K
3B Hans Montero1-for-5, HR (4), RBI, R, 2 K
2B Owen Cobb1-for-4, R, SB (11), BB, 2 K
CF Marshall Toole1-for-3, 2 R, 2 SB (14), 2 BB
June: 6-for-11 (1 double, 1 triple, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 4 R, 4-for-4 SB, 7 BB, 1 K). That works.

RHP J.T. Etheridge: (W, 2-0)  5 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 2 HR
Etheridge hit 94.1 MPH with his fastball and heavily featured his slider (56% of his pitches). This was his first Low-A start, though his first two appearances were extended relief outings. Between Tampa and the FCL, he has 40 strikeouts in 25.2 innings.
RHP Cole Zaffiro: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Gus Hughes1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.71 ERA (17 IP, 15 H, 9 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 9 BB, 17 K)

FCL (12-13) (Lost to the Tigers, 6-3)

DH Duke Ellis0-for-4, 2 K
Ellis begins his rehab stint. Along with Cam Eden, they fulfill the “speedy outfielder depth” quota.
SS Dexters Peralta0-for-4, R, K
LF Wilson Rodriguez1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
2B Luis Escudero0-for-3, SF, RBI, K
3B Kevin Verde2-for-2, 2B (2), RBI, SB (5), BB

5.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 10 K
LHP Jose Ledesma1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

DSL Yankees (0-3) (Lost to the DSL Marlins, 4-3)

CF Isaias Castillo2-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, K
Castillo (16) is officially 4-for-8 with a double and a homer to begin his career. I say “officially” because he was 1-for-2 with three stolen bases in a suspended game yesterday. Those stats will eventually count.
3B Richard Matic2-for-2, 2B (1), HR (2), RBI, R, SB (1), BB
Matic hit zero home runs in 46 games last season. He has two in three games this year.

LHP Carlos De La Rosa: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, HR
A solid professional debut for the 17-year-old.
RHP Jose Vargas1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Vargas (17) makes his professional debut.

DSL Bombers (1-1) (Lost to the DSL Phillies Red, 4-1)

2B Christofer Reyes1-for-3, SB (2), K
RF Richard Meran1-for-2, HR (1), RBI, R, K
Meran’s first home run since 2023.

RHP Cesar Acosta3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K
Acosta (18) makes his professional debut.
LHP Andre Avila: 3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Avila’s first professional appearance.

Yankees MILB 5/21: Roc Riggio’s Big Night

Notes:

RHP Greysen Carter, the hard thrower with no idea where the ball is going, was sent to the FCL today. Carter, who hit 100+ MPH earlier this season, made seven starts for Tampa, going 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA over 24 innings with a 20.2% K and 21.8% BB.

RHP J.T. Etheridge replaces Carter on Tampa’s roster. Signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2024, the 23-year-old pitched in three games for the FCL squad this year, posting a 2.31 ERA over 11.2 innings with a 42.3% K and 15.4% BB.

Carter is an intriguing talent but needs work. If your job is to work with young pitchers, Carter presents a fun challenge.

2.47 ERA (43.2 IP, 37 H, 17 R, 12 ER, 1 HR, 15 BB, 52 K). Schlittler has allowed 15 homers in 210.1 career innings (0.64 HR/9). Impressively, he has maintained a strong strikeout rate while reducing his walk rate by a comfortable margin.

DH Roc Riggio: 2-for-2, 3B (1), HR (4), 3 RBI, 4 R, SB (2), CS (3), 3 BB
.275/.431/.700 in 51 PA (3 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 11 R, 2-for-5 SB, 21.6% BB, 21.6% K). I hope Riggio gets to Somerset this season.
CF Jace Avina0-for-4, R, HBP, 3 K
1B Coby Morales2-for-5, 3 RBI, K
C Omar Martinez2-for-5, RBI, R, K
.261/.367/.433 in 158 PA. In 588 plate appearances at this level, Martinez is hitting .244/.372/.412 with 20 doubles, 2 triples, 19 HR, 67 RBI, and 76 runs. He has drawn 95 walks (16.2%) and has struck out 146 times (24.8%).
LF Jackson Castillo0-for-3, 2 BB, K
.229/.342/.344 in 155 PA (9 doubles, 2 HR, 22 RBI, 14 R, 5-for-5 SB). He hasn’t been able to carry over his hot 81 plate appearance stretch after being promoted here in 2024.
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-5, RBI, 2 K
3B Josh Moylan0-for-3, BB, K
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-4, 2 K
RF Luis Durango: 2-for-3, 2 R, 2 SB (3), BB, K
His speed is likely what attracted the Yankees to him. He has never shown any hints of power (hasn’t hit a home run since 2021. This was his 145th game since that season.)

RHP Carlos Lagrange3.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 6 K
4.63 ERA (35 IP, 28 H, 19 R, 18 ER, 3 HR, 11 BB, 56 K). Lagrange’s first rough start since April 8th (his 2025 debut). This is the first time he’s allowed more than two walks this season (did it four times in nine games in 2024).
RHP Chris Kean1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
1.02 ERA (17.2 IP, 14 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 15 K)

Tampa (21-20) (Defeated Dunedin, 9-5. Getting over .500 was something I didn’t anticipate in the first half)

DH Roderick Arias1-for-2, 2B (7), RBI, R, CS (2), 3 BB, K
His first two games coming off the injured list have been encouraging (3-for-6, 3 doubles, 2 RBI, 1 R, 4 BB, 2 K). Let’s see if he can keep it going.
C Engelth Urena1-for-5
LF Dillon Lewis2-for-5, 2B (8), RBI, K
.218/.297/.408 in 158 PA (8 doubles, 2 triples, 5 HR, 19 RBI, 24 R, 9-for-10 SB, 9.5% BB, 27.8% K).
SS Juan Matheus1-for-5, R, SB (11), 2 K
Matheus has a 9-game hitting streak (17-for-35). He is hitting .306/.366/.379 in 145 PA (9 doubles, 22 RBI, 16 R, 11-for-16 SB, 10.3% BB, 22.8% K). Matheus has some speed but has to work on his base-stealing technique (49-for-71 (69%)).
RF Tyler Wilson2-for-4, 2B (3), HR (2), 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 K
3B Owen Cobb: 3-for-5, RBI, R, SB (8), CS (2)
Cobb has an 8-game hitting streak (14-for-31). He is hitting .446/.484/.786 in 63 plate appearances. The 23-year-old should find his way to Hudson Valley this season.
2B Hans Montero2-for-5, RBI, R,  2 K
CF Marshall Toole1-for-3, 2 R, 2 SB (10), BB, K
.297/.396/.429 in 106 PA (6 doubles, 3 triples, 7 RBI, 22 R, 10-for-11 SB, 13.2% BB, 25.5% K).

FCL (6-7)

Day off.

DSL (0-0)

Their season starts in June.

Yankees MILB 5/20: Roderick Arias Doubles Twice

Notes:

Some injury notes:

LHP Brock Selvidge has started a rehab assignment in the FCL. He pitched 2.2 innings on Monday, allowing 2 runs (0 earned) on 3 hits with a walk and 2 strikeouts. Last year, he made 16 starts for Somerset, going 7-6 with a 4.25 ERA over 84.2 innings with an 80/43 K/BB. He is ranked 8th in the organization by Pipeline.

RHP Carson Coleman‘s long injury journey is hopefully over, as he is also on a rehab assignment in the FCL. The 27-year-old Coleman last pitched in 2022, when he was considered one of the Yankees’ top relief prospects. That year, he compiled a 2.13 ERA over 63.1 innings with a 95/19 K/BB. Despite missing all of 2023 to injury, the Texas Rangers chose him in the Rule 5 draft and placed him on the 60-day injured list. This past winter, they had the choice of adding him to the 40-man or returning him to the Yankees, and they opted to send him back.

SS Roderick Arias was activated off the injured list for Tampa.

Injury Log

Scranton (21-22)

Their game against Nashville (unique opponent!) was postponed. They will attempt to play two tomorrow.

Nashville is in the West division. Teams in the East don’t play every team in the West.

Somerset (18-21) (Shut down New Hampshire, 5-0)

SS George Lombard Jr.1-for-4, SF, RBI, SB (4), K
Since promotion: .189/.360/.189 in 50 PA with ten walks and ten strikeouts. He is 4-for-5 stealing bases. You should be rewarded for your patience with Lombard Jr.
C Rafael Flores0-for-4, R, SB (4), BB
.296/.349/.539 in 166 PA. Like many C/1B, he won’t overwhelm you with speed and will likely lose any speed he has as he gets older. That said, he is 15-for-17 stealing bases in his career so at least he is efficient at it.
CF Garrett Martin1-for-5, R, SB (7), 2 K
2B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, R, 2 K
LF Grant Richardson2-for-3, RBI, BB, K
1B Tyler Hardman: 2-for-4, HR (4), 3 RBI, R, K
.188/.235/.357 in 119 PA.
3B Alexander Vargas0-for-4, 2 K
RF Jared Wegner1-for-4, R, K
DH Antonio Gomez2-for-4, 2B (2)
Gomez breaks a 0-for-13 slide. I once labeled him as their most promising pure catching prospect, but the offense has rarely shown up.

RHP Jon Olsen2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
RHP Jordany Ventura:(W, 2-0)  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Harrison Cohen2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
3.14 ERA (14.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 20 K). It can be hard to differentiate between so many right-handed relief prospects. All they can do is perform as we speculate.
LHP Will Brian2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Since promotion: 1.50 ERA (12 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 15 K). Overall, he owns a 27/4 K/BB over 19 innings. Sneaky kid to watch.
RHP Kelly Austin1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
1.42 ERA (12.2 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 13 K). See Cohen, Harrison.

Hudson Valley (26-12) (Lost to Winston-Salem, 6-1)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-4, 2B (3), BB
Since his rehab stint ended: .237/.370/.553 in 46 PA (3 doubles, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 7 R, 8 BB, 11 K). He has reached base safely in all ten games.
RF Brendan Jones1-for-4, K
CF Jace Avina0-for-4, 2 K
1B Coby Morales1-for-4, CS (3)
Morales was moved back here from Somerset.
DH Parks Harber0-for-3, BB
Since promotion: .323/.380/.538 in 71 PA.
C Omar Martinez0-for-2, R, 2 BB
.256/.366/.434 in 153 PA (5 doubles, 6 HR, 25 RBI, 22 R, 14.4% BB, 28.8% K). He has cooled off since his insane hot streak (0-for-14 in his last five games, though he has drawn five walks)
LF Jackson Castillo1-for-4
3B Josh Moylan1-for-4, 2B (8), RBI, 2 K
SS Brenny Escanio1-for-4, K

LHP Kyle Carr: (L, 0-2)  5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, HR, 3 BB, 3 K
3.86 ERA (30.1 IP, 25 H, 15 R, 13 ER, 2 HR, 15 BB, 22 K). Carr does a nice job keeping the ball on the ground, but “swing and miss” hasn’t shown up in his profile (117/70 K/BB in 134.1 career innings).
RHP Tony Rossi1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Between here and Tampa: 14.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 18 K. If you want to find a blemish, his K rate has fallen since his promotion (12/0 K/BB in 7.2 Tampa innings; 6/3 K/BB in 7 IP for Hudson Valley).
RHP Tyrone Yulie1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.68 ERA (14.2 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 7 BB, 20 K)
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Tampa (20-20) (Defeated Dunedin, 7-4. They are 11-4 since a 2-10 stretch. Baseball!)

SS Roderick Arias: 2-for-4, 2 2B (6), RBI, R, CS (1), BB, 2 K
Arias doubled and scored in his first AB since April 26th. He was off to a bad start before his injury (.155/.302/.254). Maybe this gets him going.
   3B Hans Montero0-for-0
C Edgleen Perez0-for-4, RBI, R, BB, K
DH Engelth Urena1-for-5, R, K
LF Dillon Lewis1-for-4, RBI, SB (9), BB, 2 K
Lewis had a rough April, but his May has been encouraging (16-for-59 (.271); 3 doubles, 2 triples, 4 HR, 15 RBI, 16 R, 8 BB, 18 K, 3-for-3 SB).
2B-SS Juan Matheus1-for-5, 2B (9), 2 RBI, 3 K
Matheus has an 8-game hitting streak (16-for-30 (.533); 3 doubles, 7 RBI, 6 R)
RF Austin Green1-for-3, 2 BB, K
3B-2B Owen Cobb1-for-4, R, 2 SB (7), CI, K
Cobb has a 7-game hitting streak (11-for-26 (.423); 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 5 R). He is 7-for-8 stealing bases this year and 16-for-17 in his career. His batting average during the hitting streak (.423) is lower than his season average (.431). Would it shock me if he becomes the next obsession amongst the unheralded prospects? No.
CF Marshall Toole0-for-3, R, SB (8), HBP, K
1B Josue Gonzalez1-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB, K

RHP Andrew Landry4 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K
Landry generated 14 whiffs with his 4-pitch assortment (at least two whiffs per pitch). His 7.03 ERA includes a start where he allowed nine earned runs in 1.1 innings. Beyond that, there are things to be encouraged about, including 33 strikeouts in 32 innings.
RHP Jack Sokol: (W, 2-1)  1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Brady Kirtner: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
2.42 ERA (23 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 9 BB, 25 K)
RHP Chris Veach: (S, 2)  1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
1.65 ERA (16.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 28 K). One thing I notice from Baseball Savant: Veach loves his changeup.

FCL (6-7) (Lost to the Tigers, 10-9)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-4, RBI, K
.298/.389/.553 in 55 PA. He has hit safely in 11 of his 13 games this season. There is a balance between allowing a player to build confidence and recognizing that the level is no longer challenging. For now, I have no issue with him being here.
LF Isael Arias1-for-5, 2 RBI
C Ediel Rivera3-for-5, 2B (3), K
The 19-year-old is hitting .226/.351/.323 in his debut season.
DH Luis Puello2-for-4, 2 2B (3), 2 RBI, 2 R
Puello (19) has struggled to begin 2025. This was a much-needed performance (now 5-for-24).
2B Luis Escudero3-for-5, 2B (1), 2 RBI, R, K
Also off to a slow start, Escudero has two 3-hit efforts in his last three games. He is hitting .212/.297/.303. Before this stretch, he was hitting .045/.160/.045
3B Santiago Gomez1-for-3, SF, RBI, R
RF Gabriel Lara2-for-4, 2B (1), 2 R
The speedy Lara is hitting .273/.333/.591 in only 24 plate appearances. He is 0-for-3 stealing bases.

RHP Carson Coleman: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
This had to be an emotional game for Coleman. His journey has been long, and I am rooting for him to get back on track.
RHP J.T. Etheridge3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
2.31 ERA (11.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 8 BB, 22 K)

DSL (0-0)

Their season starts in June.

Yankees MILB 4/18: Roderick Arias Hits a Slam

Notes:

I don’t typically write much about releases, as they happen often (especially in the lower minors and DSL), but I saw today that the Yankees released RHP Kristofer Bow, their 14th-round pick in 2022.

Bow didn’t lack talent, but control is an issue. Last season, for Tampa, he went 3-2 with a pair of saves and a 5.45 ERA. He owned a 24.0% K, 15.6% BB, and 46.9% GB.

Nowadays, with roster limits, prospects have to show something to stay. Even if the Yankees think there is something here to work with, roster space is an issue, and talented but erratic prospects feel the squeeze.

Scranton placed veteran LHP Brandon Leibrandt on the 7-day injured list.

Scranton (11-7) (Defeated Durham, 5-0)

3B Jorbit Vivas: 3-for-4, 2 R, SB (3), HBP
Vivas has four multi-hit efforts during his 6-game hitting streak (13-for-24). He has five 3-hit games this season and has a strikeout rate of 5% (BB% is 11.3). Crazy start to his campaign (.364/.443/.530).
LF Everson Pereira0-for-3, BB, K
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-4, HR (4), 2 RBI, R
.286/.400/.571 in 75 PA (6 doubles, 4 HR, 14 RBI, 15 R, 13.3% BB, 13.3% K). I will say it again: Rumfield will likely make his MLB debut at some point. The odds aren’t high it will happen with the Yankees.
C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, R, SB (1), 2 K
Since the promotion: 5-for-15 (..333). Rodriguez stole 21 bases in 2023, but that number fell to 9 last season.
CF Ismael Munguia1-for-3, R, SB (4), HBP
DH Jose Rojas1-for-3, 2B (6), 2 RBI, BB, K
SS Andrew Velazquez0-for-3, BB, K
RF Grant Richardson1-for-4, 2B (2), 2 K
2B Max Burt0-for-4, K
Burt has been grinding through the system since being drafted in the 28th round in 2018. This is his 44th Triple-A contest (329 games at Double-A)

RHP Allan Winans3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K
RHP Sean Boyle: (W, 2-2)  5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K
Boyle’s last two games: 10 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 10 K. He could make his MLB debut in 2025. I can envision that in an “emergency” situation (ie, second game of a double-header, etc.)
RHP Yerry De Los Santos1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K

Somerset (6-7) (Annihilated Altoona, 12-1)

2B Dylan Jasso2-for-4, 2B (2), RBI, R, BB
.278/.350/.472 in 40 PA (2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 10 R, 3 BB, 6 K). He started the season 2-for-15 without an extra-base hit. He is 8-for-21 with four extra-base hits since.
CF Spencer Jones0-for-3, R, 2 BB
It was not an eventful night, but it dropped Jones’s K% below 30 (29.82%).
C Rafael Flores: 2-for-5, 2B (2), 4 RBI
Flores equals his personal best for RBI in a game (6th time in his career)
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-5, 2B (5), R, K
Hardman has four doubles and a homer in his last six games.
LF Cole Gabrielson1-for-5, R, 4 K
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-3, 2B (4), SF, 2 RBI, 2 R, BB, K
.333/.406/.481 in 32 PA. He hit well in limited spring training time and has carried that over into the early regular season.
3B Jake Gatewood2-for-5, HR (1), 3 RBI, R
Gatewood has 125 career minor league home runs (842 games).
DH Antonio Gomez2-for-5, 2 R, K
RF Christopher Familia2-for-4, 2B (1), 3B (1), RBI, 2 R, K
A nice 2025/Double-A debut for Familia

RHP Baron Stuart4.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
RHP Luis Pacheco (W, 1-0): 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

CF Brendan Jones1-for-4, R, SB (7)
.167/.314/.381 in 51 PA.
3B George Lombard Jr.1-for-3, BB
His 10th career game at 3B (first this season). He is on a 6-game hitting streak (9-for-19; 6 BB). If you want a blossoming prospect, Lombard Jr. is doing that before your very eyes.
CF Jace Avina0-for-3, CS (1), BB, K
2B Jose Colmenares0-for-4, 2 K
DH Josh Moylan0-for-4, 2 K
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, R, BB, K
C Tomas Frick0-for-3
RF Anthony Hall1-for-2, RBI, CI, K
1B Kiko Romero0-for-1, HBP
   PR-1B Coby Morales0-for-1

RHP Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz: (W, 1-1)  6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K
3.38 ERA (16 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 18 K). He falls one short of his personal best for strikeouts in a game.
RHP Chris Kean1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
4.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
RHP Sebastian Keane (S, 1): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Keane’s third career save (one in each year of his career – 2023, 2024, 2025)

Tampa (7-6) (Outlasted St. Lucie, 14-9)

3B Roderick Arias1-for-3, HR (1, grand slam), 4 RBI, 2 R, SB (5), HBP, 2 BB, K
This kind of night shows you the raw potential Arias has. He is hitting .167/.322/.315 in 59 PA (5-for-5 SB).
C Edgleen Perez2-for-4, RBI, R, 2 BB, K
Perez is 3-for-8 with a double and three walks the last two nights. Perhaps the 18-year-old is starting to get comfortable.
DH Engelth Urena0-for-4, R, 2 BB, 2 K
1B Parks Harber2-for-5, RBI, BB
Harber’s hits were 110.8 and 110.5 MPH.
LF Tyler Wilson1-for-5, 2 R, 3 K
RF Dillon Lewis2-for-5, RBI, 2 R, 3 K
2B Hans Montero1-for-3, 2 R, CS (1), 2 BB, K
CF Marshall Toole0-for-3, RBI, R, 2 BB, 2 K
SS Juan Matheus: 1-for-2, 2B (2), SF, 4 RBI, 3 R, SB (3), 2 BB
Matheus has shown off his discipline. It is nice to see him have a productive night beyond that. He came up one short of his personal best for RBI in a game (set in 2022 in the DSL).  His 2025 BB%/K%:  22.9/8.6.

LHP Tanner Bauman2.2 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 5 BB, 2 K
After a solid first career start, his last two haven’t gone according to plan. If you are concerned about that, you worry too much.
RHP Jackson Fristoe: (W, 1-0)  4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 2 HR
Fristoe threw 44% cutters (average 91 MPH), 31% 4-seamers (max 95.4; average 92.6), 21% sliders, and 4% change-ups.
RHP Jack Sokol2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Gamecast registered six different pitches, so he was featuring a starter’s arsenal out of the pen. This makes sense, as he was a starter in college.
RHP Alex Bustamante0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

FCL (0-0)

Their season starts in June.

Yankees MILB 4/11: Roderick Arias: 2 Hits, BB

Notes:

“Are you ever returning to the Twitter platform for your minor league stuff?”

I don’t know. However, I rather enjoy not being on that platform at the moment. Why try to play Whack-a-Mole with a bunch of dumb blue-check takes when I can ignore it altogether?  I miss some aspects of interacting with other minor league fans, families of the players, and even the prospects themselves. But I am enjoying what feels like going back to my roots of providing minor league content at my pace with no stress attached.

Scranton (7-5) (Defeated Rochester, 8-7, in 11 innings, on a 2-out, pinch-hit walk-off home run!)

RF Ismael Munguia1-for-4, SF, RBI, SAC
2B Jorbit Vivas0-for-3, CI, 2 BB
CF Everson Pereira1-for-6, 2B (1), R, 3 K
10-for-37 (1 double, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 6 R, 2-for-2 SB, 5 BB, 15 K). One thing I don’t worry about with Pereira is power – it will come.
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-5, 2B (4), RBI, 2 R, BB
14-for-48 (4 doubles, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 12 R, 8 BB, 7 K).  He owns a .967 OPS.
DH-P Cooper Hummel0-for-4, R, 2 BB, 2 K
LF Dominic Smith0-for-2, R, 3 BB, K
   PR-LF Duke Ellis0-for-1
Alex Jackson2-for-4, HR (2), 3 RBI, R, BB, K
   PH Ronaldo Hernandez1-for-1, HR (2), 2 RBI, R
Walk-off HR for Hernandez with two outs in the 11th!
3B Jose Rojas1-for-3, 2B (3), RBI, BB, K
   3B Andrew Velazquez0-for-1
SS Braden Shewmake0-for-3, R, SB (1), BB, HBP
Shewmake is an impressive 54-for-61 (88.5%) stealing bases in his minor league career (5-for-6 in his MLB career)

RHP Jake Woodford3.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Woodford, a sinker/sweeper type, maxed at 92.3 with his sinker and 92.7 with his 4-seamer. He needs to be watched because he has MLB experience and is somewhere on the depth chart.
RHP Colten Brewer1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Brewer maxed at 94.1 with his sinker.
RHP Leonardo Pestana: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Eric Reyzelman1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Reyzelman threw 18 4-seamers and six sweepers. He maxed at 96 MPH (good) and averaged 93.5.
LHP Rob Zastryzny: 0.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Kervin Castro: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Castro walked in the tying run (9th) but got out of quite a pickle. He then struck out two to strand the ghost runner in the 10th, but Hummel allowed his ghost runner in the 11th. The Yankees signed the 26-year-old last year, but he missed the season due to injury.
RHP Cooper Hummel: (W, 1-0)  0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Hummel’s 5th career minor league pitching appearance results in a win!

Somerset (2-4)

Their game against Reading was postponed due to rain. They will attempt to play two tomorrow.

Hudson Valley (4-2)

Their game against Brooklyn was postponed due to rain. They will attempt to play two tomorrow.

Tampa (4-3) (Lost to Fort Myers, 6-3)

3B-SS Roderick Arias: 2-for-4, RBI, R, BB
Arias’s first start away from SS this season (third career start at 3B).  After a horrible start to his campaign, Arias has back-to-back multi-hit efforts.
C Edgleen Perez0-for-5, 4 K
It has been a struggle (3-for-20, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 9 K). Why shouldn’t we worry? He is an 18-year-old catcher getting his first taste of full-season ball.  He deserves a LOT of rope.
1B-3B Parks Harber1-for-3, RBI, BB, K
DH Tyler Wilson: 1-for-4, R, 2 K
LF Dillon Lewis0-for-4, SB (2)
RF Austin Green0-for-2
  1B Josue Gonzalez2-for-2, 2B (1), RBI
No better feeling than earning a pair of hits on a night when you don’t start.
2B-RF Hans Montero0-for-4, 2 K
CF Marshall Toole: 1-for-3, R, 2 SB (3), BB
It is never wise to walk Toole. The 22-year-old is 11-for-13 stealing bases in his brief 21-game career.
SS-2B Juan Matheus1-for-4, 2B (1), K
The 20-year-old had a big season in the FCL last year (.321/.429/.488 with five homers and 40 RBI in 49 games). He is off to a slow start here (2-for-12), but it’s early. By the way, he has more career walks (91) than strikeouts (84).

LHP Tanner Bauman: (L, 0-1)  2.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 2 K
After a successful first start, Bauman struggles in his second. He tossed 75 pitches tonight, mixing a slider (35%), sinker (29%), curve (20%), and change (16%). He maxed out at 93.2 with the sinker.
RHP Jackson Fristoe3.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Fristoe was cutter-heavy tonight (57%). He maxed at 94.9 with his 4-seam fastball (27%). It is nice to see the zero walks, as control has eluded him in his career.
RHP Cade Austin2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
Nice bounceback after a tough 2025 debut.

FCL (0-0)

Yankees MILB 4/10: Jackson Castillo: 2 Doubles, 6 RBI

Notes:

RHP McKinley Moore and OF Christopher Familia have been moved to the organization’s Development List.

The Development List was introduced in 2021, and its purpose is what you think it is. If a player has something to work on, and the organization wants them to do so outside of game competition, the Development List is there for them to use.

Scranton (6-5)

Their game against Rochester was postponed.  Tomorrow’s weather doesn’t look promising.

Somerset (2-4) (Defeated Reading, 4-1)

3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4, RBI, CS (1), K
CF Spencer Jones: 1-for-3, RBI, SB (2), BB, K
.263/.462/.474 in 26 PA (1 double, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 5 R, 2-for-2 SB, 6 BB, 8 K)
C Rafael Flores0-for-2, SB (2), 2 BB, K
6-for-21 (2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 R, 2-for-2 SB, 4 BB, 8 K)
LF Garrett Martin1-for-3, R, BB
RF Cole Gabrielson: 2-for-4, 2B (1), R, 2 K
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-4, RBI, K
DH Grant Richardson0-for-3, BB, 3 K
SS Alexander Vargas: 2-for-4, 2B (3), RBI, CS (1), K
6-for-12 (3 doubles, 3 RBI, 0 BB, 1 K). This is a continuation of his strong spring training.
2B Max Burt0-for-2, R, SB (2), BB, K

RHP Clarke Schmidt4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Schmidt could be in an MLB rotation as soon as next week.
RHP Cam Schlittler: (W, 1-0): 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
10.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 12 K

Hudson Valley (4-2) (Defeated Brooklyn, 8-3)

CF Brendan Jones0-for-3, R, 2 SB (3), 2 BB, 2 K
2-for-21 (1 double, 1 triple, 3 RBI, 2 R, 3-for-3 SB, 4 BB, 10 K). Jones is 21-for-21 stealing bases in his short career.
SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-2, 3 R, SB (2), 3 BB, K
Lombard had four 3+ BB games in 2024 (including one 4 BB game)
LF Jackson Castillo: 3-for-5, 2 2B (2), 6 RBI, SB (2), K
Castillo swats a pair of 3-run doubles. Interestingly, this is not a new best for him for RBI. He knocked in 7 runs on August 13, 2024.
C Omar Martinez0-for-3, 2 BB, 3 K
2B Jose Colmenares0-for-5, 4 K
1B Josh Moylan1-for-4, R, 2 K
DH Antonio Gomez1-for-4, 2 K
RF Coby Morales1-for-3, R, BB, K
3B Brenny Escanio0-for-2, 2 R, SB (3), 2 BB

RHP Josh Grosz2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K
The 6’4″ Grosz had a solid debut season in 2024 (24 games (23 starts), 7-8, 3.85 ERA; 121.2 IP, 101 H, 14 HR, 52 BB, 131 K). He had his best ERA in seven starts at this level (2.77). He was the Yankees’ 11th-round pick in 2023 (East Carolina).
LHP Will Brian: (W, 1-0)  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
RHP Bryce Warrecker2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Impressive outing for the 6’8″ Warrecker. Like many kids his size, he needs to work on his command/control.
RHP Hayden Merda1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Huey Morrill1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (4-2) (Defeated Fort Myers, 4-1)

SS Roderick Arias: 2-for-4, 2B (2), 2 SB (3), BB, K
Arias needed this night in a bad way.
LF Brian Sanchez0-for-2, SB (2), BB, 2 K
Sanchez left the game after striking out in the 5th inning.
  LF Dillon Lewis0-for-1, K
C Engelth Urena0-for-2, R, 2 HBP, 2 K
Urena is off to a 1-for-17 start, though he does have seven walks and two HBP.
3B Parks Harber1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, R, K
Harber hit one homer in 23 games in last year’s debut season.
RF Tyler Wilson0-for-3, CS (2), BB, K
2B Austin Green0-for-3, R, HBP
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-3, BB, 2 K
CF Marshall Toole1-for-4, K
DH Duncan Pastore1-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, R
Signed as an undrafted free agent last year, Pastore went 10-for-27 in ten games with four stolen bases. He is still looking for his first career extra-base hit.

LHP Griffin Herring4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K
10.1 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 13 K. I’d say that’s a nice start to one’s professional career.
RHP Sean Hermann: (W, 1-0)  2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Chris Veach1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Tony Rossi (S, 1): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Rossi’s first career save. He was pumping mid-90s sinkers tonight.

Yankees MILB 9/8: Josh Grosz Continues His Dazzling Pitching

News:

Nothing

Scranton (79-57) (Defeated Syracuse, 8-7, in 11 innings. Worcester beat Rochester again, leaving Scranton and Worcester tied at the top of the standings at 36-26. Rochester has fallen to 34-29)

2B Caleb Durbin2-for-6, RS, K
Durbin has a 5-game hitting streak (8-for-19; 1 double, 1 triple, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 4 R)
LF Jasson Dominguez: 0-for-3, SF, RBI, BB
In addition to all the hitting, Dominguez has 6 walks in his last 10 games. The whole package is coming together.
C Ben Rice0-for-4, BB, 2 K
SS Oswald Peraza1-for-5, RS, SB (20)
Last 8 games: 8-for-29 (.276; 1 double, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 7 R, 2-for-2 SB)
3B Jorbit Vivas1-for-3, RS, 2 BB
Vivas has an 8-game hitting streak (9-for-28; 2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR)
1B T.J. Rumfield2-for-4, RBI, RS, K
At this level: .297/.365/.454 in 441 PA (26 doubles, 12 HR, 66 RBI, 67 R, 3-for-6 SB, 8.6% BB, 16.8% K). He makes contact and has hit for some power at this juiced-up level. Is it enough for the Yankees to give him a look? Your guess is as good as mine. He is Rule 5 eligible this winter.
  PR Cam Eden0-for-0, SB (30)
  1B Carlos Narvaez0-for-1
CF Taylor Trammell3-for-5, 2 RS, SB (17), K
DH J.C. Escarra1-for-3, HR (8, grand slam), 4 RBI, RS, 2 BB
Escarra has homered in five straight games (6 HR during the streak). He has 12 HR between here and Somerset, one short of his best (13 in 2019).
RF Greg Allen0-for-3, SF, RBI, RS, 2 SB (11), K

LHP Edgar Barclay5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
6.13 ERA (135 IP, 141 H, 98 R, 92 ER, 28 HR, 63 BB, 110 K). Barclay had a shot to be a shuttle arm this season but the performance wasn’t there. If he is to earn an opportunity, it will likely be elsewhere.
LHP Victor Gonzalez1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Joey Gerber: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Scott Effross1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Anthony Misiewicz1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 HR
RHP Yerry De Los Santos: (W, 2-1) 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
LHP Oddanier Mosqueda (S, 5): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Yesterday, he was asked to get one out to close a 19-0 game. Today’s situation was more exciting.

Somerset (70-61) (Lost to Binghamton, 2-1. They had their chances to score some runs, but it wasn’t meant to be. Portland won to move 1.5 games ahead of the Patriots with one week left)

CF Spencer Jones0-for-3, BB, 2 K
Jones has a 9.8% BB and 37.9% K. He is two strikeouts away from a 200 K season. Don’t get me wrong: Jones is a legitimate prospect. Part of me is mesmerized by the raw talent. The other part of me can’t get past the insanity of that strikeout rate.  Whichever side of the coin you fall on, nobody should say you are wrong to have that position.
C Rafael Flores0-for-2, BB, HBP, K
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-4, K
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
Seigler’s BB% is 14.4% (17.8% K). Because he is no longer considered a “prospect,” it is hard to find information on how he handles second base defensively. He has 14 errors, but that doesn’t paint the full picture.
LF Grant Richardson2-for-4, K
DH Jared Wegner0-for-4, K
SS Alexander Vargas: 3-for-4, K
Vargas is 11-for-31 (.355) in September after hitting .256/.322/.402 in August. His Double-A OPS is over .700 (.702). Because he has a sacrifice fly and zero walks, his September batting average is higher than his OBP. Plate discipline isn’t his path to MLB.
RF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, RBI, BB, 2 K
3B Max Burt0-for-3, K
  PH Elijah Dunham0-for-1
Dunham flew into an unassisted double play to end the game with Jones on deck. That’s not good (unassisted fly ball double play? What was Vargas doing? Do I want to know?)

RHP Cam Schlittler: (L, 1-4) 4.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K (ties personal best)
Since promotion: 4.94 ERA (27.1 IP, 33 H, 18 R, 15 ER, 3 HR, 11 BB, 34 K). Overall: 3.42 ERA (115.2 IP, 94 H, 57 R, 44 ER, 10 HR, 53 BB, 145 K). Yesterday, I mentioned that Zach Messinger was an Organizational Pitcher of the Year candidate. Schlittler should be a finalist as well.
RHP Luis Pacheco1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Ryan Anderson: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Colby White0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (73-58) (Defeated Asheville, 8-1, to end their regular season. The playoffs begin on Tuesday when they take on Greensboro. It’s a best-of-3 series)

LF-CF Brendan Jones: 2-for-3, 2B (2), RS, 2 SB (13), 2 BB
Jones is 18-for-18 stealing bases in 24 games between here and Tampa. I hope his game develops because his speed can be game-changing.
SS George Lombard Jr.: 0-for-5, 2 K
Full-season numbers, between here and Tampa: .231/.338/.334 in 497 PA (25 doubles, 2 triples, 5 HR, 45 RBI, 56 R, 39-for-47 SB (just under 83%), 12.3% BB, 22.9% K). There were peaks and valleys this season. If the Yankees kept him in Tampa all season, I bet his numbers would look much better. That’s not the goal of development.
C Omar Martinez: 3-for-5, RBI, 3 RS, K
.238/.374/.404 in 430 PA (15 doubles, 2 triples, 13 HR, 41 RBI, 53 R, 16.98% BB, 23.5% K). Is Martinez a long-range catcher? You would be shocked to hear that most minor league catchers have to answer this. It isn’t unique to the Yankees organization. Offensively, he is a left-handed bat with some patience and pop. If you like under-the-radar prospects, he is one to put on your list. The Yankees have moved him up one level per season the last two years (full season in Tampa in 2023, full season in Hudson Valley in 2024).
RF Garrett Martin1-for-2, 2B (17), 2 RS, SB (17), 2 HBP, K
Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2023, Martin hit .216/.326/.422 in 346 PA.
CF Jackson Castillo1-for-2, RBI, CS (1), K
I am not sure why he left the game early. Castillo (21) hit .268/.386/.426 in 415 PA between here and Tampa. He stole 21 bases in 27 attempts. His Hudson Valley sample size was small but encouraging (.314/.383/.514). To top it off, he has a good chance to stick in CF.
   PH-LF Anthony Hall: 2-for-2, 2B (5), RBI
Injuries have been a theme during Hall’s brief career. His average at this level dipped to .068 at one point. He finished at .181/.286/.241.
3B Dylan Jasso: 1-for-2, 2 SF, 3 RBI
Between here and Tampa: .243/.329/.399 in 508 PA with 30 doubles, 3 triples, 11 homers, and 67 RBI. He is a 21-year-old 1B/3B.
1B Coby Morales0-for-4, 3 K
After being promoted, Morales hit .286/.417/.327 in 60 PA. The 1B/corner outfielder hit only 4 home runs between here and Tampa but stole a surprising 34 bases in 42 attempts.
DH Antonio Gomez1-for-1, RS, BB
.238/.315/.431 in 184 PA. Is he still a prospect? I hate giving up on 22-year-old catchers with some prospect pedigree but he has a lot to prove.
   PH-DH Edison Vivas0-for-2, K
2B Owen Cobb0-for-3, RS, CI, K
Cobb, signed as an undrafted free agent this year, spent only three games at this level after hitting .278/.365/.352 with 7 stolen bases for Tampa.

RHP Josh Grosz5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, HR
At this level: 2.77 ERA (39 IP, 22 H, 14 R, 12 ER, 4 HR, 20 BB, 31 K). Overall: 3.85 ERA (121.2 IP, 101 H, 70 R, 52 ER, 14 HR, 52 BB, 131 K). That line includes a tough emergency start for Somerset (4 IP/6 H/6 R/5 ER). That start could have discouraged him, but it did not. His stats after that game: 11 starts, 1.27 ERA (64 IP, 31 H, 12 R, 9 ER, 21 BB, 57 K, 3 HR). Given the playoff schedule, his season could be over. He could be ready for Game 3 of the best-of-3 series on Friday (if necessary). Like Messinger and Schlittler, Grosz deserves a spot in the Pitcher of the Year conversation.
RHP Mason Vinyard1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.26 ERA (47 IP, 35 H, 23 R, 17 ER, 2 HR, 25 BB, 61 K)
LHP Joel Valdez1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
3.41 ERA (58 IP, 42 H, 26 R, 22 ER, 3 HR, 29 BB, 72 K)
RHP Thomas Balboni Jr.: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
After allowing 4 runs without recording an out on 9/28, Balboni struck out 8 over 3 hitless innings (1 BB).
RHP Harrison Cohen1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Let him finish his season in Somerset. They would miss him in the High-A playoffs, but that isn’t the goal. He pitched to a 0.93 ERA in 19.1 innings at this level (10 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 23 K).

Tampa (54-74) (Lost to Dunedin, 4-2, to conclude their 2024 campaign)

DH Roderick Arias2-for-5, 2 2B (21), RS, 2 K
Arias’ final line: .233/.335/.393 in 552 PA (21 doubles, 8 triples, 13 HR, 74 RBI, 78 R, 37-for-50 SB (74%), 12.3% BB, 30.98% K). After he doubled in his first two plate appearances today, I thought he would make a run at a .400 SLG. Anyway, this isn’t bad for a teenager. I won’t argue with you if you expected more because of his pedigree. But if you eliminate the “expectations” and look at his season at face value, it’s good enough for a teenager. He is off to Hudson Valley in 2025.
RF Willy Montero1-for-4
.244/.311/.355 in 486 PA (23 doubles, 2 triples, 7 HR, 58 RBI, 64 R, 15-for-16 SB, 8.2% BB, 21.2% K). The 20-year-old earned his way to a full-season league via a .331/.389/.436 line in the FCL last year.
3B Hans Montero0-for-4, 2 K
.206/.305/.333 in 391 PA (9 doubles, 5 triples, 8 HR, 38 RBI, 49 R, 13-for-17 SB, 11.3% BB, 28.9% K). Montero is a bonus baby ($1.7 million) who hasn’t gotten much going (.213/.345/.321 in 1,000 career plate appearances). He had a decent 2023 campaign but his first taste of full-season ball didn’t go as planned.
LF Dillon Lewis0-for-3, RS, BB
Lewis goes 13-for-52 (.250/.304/.385) in his first professional campaign.
CF Marshall Toole1-for-3, BB, K
Toole goes 13-for-51 (.255/.449/.353; 8-for-10 SB, 15 BB, 18 K) in his first professional campaign.
2B Austin Green1-for-4, 2 RBI, K
Green played in only seven games, going 3-for-26 with 5 RBI.
1B Parks Harber1-for-3, BB, 2 K
Harber goes 21-for-78 (.269/.389/.449; 7 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 19 RBI, 19 R, 4-for-4 SB) in his first professional campaign. He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina.
SS Juan Matheus0-for-3, BB, K
Matheus earned a late-season promotion (only played a handful of games) in preparation for 2025.
C Josue Gonzalez0-for-4, K
.235/.299/.348 in 137 PA. I am not going to judge a player on 137 plate appearances.  I will make this point: They talk about which level is the hardest to jump to. I agree that Double-A is that hurdle. However, going from the FCL to Low-A has its challenges. I haven’t taken the FCL/DSL seriously for years, and nothing in recent times has changed my perception.

RHP Andrew Landry4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
6.98 ERA (19.1 IP, 19 H, 18 R, 15 ER, 1 HR, 16 BB, 12 K). I provide the results but do they matter for Landry? Not this year, they don’t.
RHP Luis Arejula1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Jordy Luciano (L, 2-6): 2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
