Today was another promotion day in the system.

LHP Geoffrey Gilbert and RHP Huey Morrill, two key cogs in a dominant Hudson Valley bullpen, were promoted to Somerset. Morrill made one appearance for Somerset earlier this season.

Replacing them in Hudson Valley are right-handed pitchers Brady Kirtner and Jack Cebert. The 23-year-old Kirtner pitched to a 2.59 ERA in 30 relief appearances for Tampa. Cebert was the Yankees’ 15th-round pick in the 2025 draft out of Texas Tech (he spent three years at South Florida before transferring). While he was assigned to the FCL after the draft (paper move), he has yet to make his professional debut.

RHP Ty Boudreau was assigned to Tampa. Also out of Texas Tech, the 22-year-old Canadian was signed as an undrafted free agent. He spent most of his college years pitching for Sylvan Lake, a Canadian summer collegiate league squad.

You know the drill by now: With roster shuffling comes unfortunate releases.

The Yankees released RHP Luis Pacheco and LHP Ryan AndersonThe Yankees signed Pacheco in 2024, giving him his first taste of affiliated baseball since 2019, when he was a member of the Phillies organization.

Anderson was with the organization for a while. Drafted in the 12th round in the 2019 draft, he pitched to a 4.46 ERA in 252.1 minor league innings. He made it as high as Scranton (two games) but spent the majority of the last three seasons in Somerset.

I am not ignoring the Core Jackson story. It needs a separate blog post, which I am working on. Hopefully, I will have something to post tomorrow.  Bottom line? There’s no place for that, and using “I was stupid” as an excuse insults everyone’s intelligence.

Injury Log

Scranton (70-47; 32-14 in second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 4-1)

2B Jorbit Vivas1-for-4
Vivas is 17-for-64 (.266/.422/.313) in August. I mentioned a few weeks ago that he can settle into a role as a shuttle infielder. As someone mentioned to me, he is out of options after 2025. Hence, scratch that idea.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-3, BB, K
.305/.392/.495 in 477 PA.
CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, HR (15), RBI, R, K
This bomb went 443 feet at 111.2 MPH. At this level: 295/.368/.628. Overall: .284/.379/.610 in 390 PA (15 doubles, 31 HR, 66 RBI, 83 R, 25-for-29 SB, 12.6% BB, 31.3% K).
DH Brennen Davis0-for-4, K
Of all their minor league signings last winter, Davis was the most intriguing. Injuries have derailed his 2025 campaign (and have been a problem throughout his career). He is hitting .321/.381/.750 in 63 plate appearances at this level.
LF Jose Rojas0-for-3, SB (10), CS (1), BB, K
Rojas reaches double digits in stolen bases for the first time since 2018.
3B Jeimer Candelario0-for-4, 2 K
SS Braden Shewmake1-for-2, K
   SS Andrew Velazquez0-for-1
C Omar Martinez0-for-2, BB, K
Martinez is hitting .242/.350/.333 in 40 plate appearances since his promotion. In 92 games between three levels, he is at .227/.325/.373 in 385 plate appearances.

LHP Ryan Yarbrough (L, 0-1): 3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Yarbrough was pulled after 50 pitches. He is likely close to his return.
LHP Jayvien Sandridge0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Jake Bird0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
No, I am not surprised that Allan Winans was called up instead of Bird. I think they are doing a hard reset with Bird. Additionally, it makes sense to bring up someone who can give you bulk innings.
RHP Ian Hamilton1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
Hamilton’s Triple-A ERA is an unsightly 9.64 (9.1 innings). If he is working on something, that’s fine; however, Hamilton has dropped off considerably after being one of their many bullpen surprises.
RHP Baron Stuart2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Somerset (61-54; 26-20 in second half)

Their game against Hartford was postponed. They will try to play a doubleheader tomorrow.

Hudson Valley (69-42; 31-16 second half)

Their doubleheader against Jersey Shore was postponed. It’s been raining down here all day. They will attempt a doubleheader tomorrow. As of now, the second game hasn’t been rescheduled.

Tampa (55-59; 19-30 in the second half) (Swept Ft. Myers in a doubleheader)

Game 1 (Won, 15-4)

SS Dax Kilby2-for-4, 2B (2), 2 R, SB (3), BB
Kilby is 6-for-17, including back-to-back multi-hit efforts, since his 0-for-9 start.
3B Roderick Arias0-for-4, R, SB (29), BB, 2 K
2B Enmanuel Tejeda: 1-for-5, RBI, R, K
CF Marshall Toole4-for-5, RBI, 3 R, 4 SB (42)
Toole sets personal bests for hits and stolen bases in a game. I guess he was too tired to play in Game 2. His numbers: .307/.408/.491 in 333 PA (13 doubles, 12 triples, 5 HR, 45 RBI, 59 R, 42-for-47 SB, 13.8% BB, 20.4% K). He is the first Yankees’ minor leaguer to clear 40 stolen bases since Spencer Jones and Jasson Dominguez in 2023. I never claimed it was long ago.  As for 50 stolen bases, that wasn’t long ago either: Anthony Volpe stole exactly 50 in 2022.
1B Jackson Lovich3-for-4, 2B (2), 3B (1), 2 RBI, 4 R, SB (1), BB
Lovich follows up his 4-hit debut with a 3-hit effort.
DH Richie Bonomolo Jr.: 1-for-3, 2B (2), 2 R, 2 BB
RF Willy Montero3-for-4, 5 RBI, R
Montero’s second career 5-RBI effort (2022).
LF Eric Genther2-for-3, HR (1), 3 RBI, R, HBP, BB
Genther’s first professional home run. He joins Kaeden Kent in the “Home runs by 2025 draftees” club (technically, Genther was an undrafted free agent).
C Ediel Rivera0-for-4, BB, K

RHP Sunayro Martina4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 1 K
Martina maxed at 94.3 MPH (generated six whiffs on 18 swings against his 4-seamer). He heavily features his fastball and curve.
RHP Jackson Fristoe (W, 5-2): 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
Fristoe reached 96.6 with his 4-seam fastball today.
RHP Jordarlin Mendoza1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Mendoza looks like a sinker/slider type (84% of his pitches today). He generated three whiffs with the slider.

Game 2 (Won, 4-0)

DH Dax Kilby0-for-2, 2 SB (5), CS (1), 2 BB
Methinks Kilby is starting to settle into being a professional baseball player. If there weren’t questions about his ability to stick at shortstop, he likely goes earlier in the draft – but those questions exist, so it could come down to whether his bat can “carry” at a less demanding defensive position. Reports are favorable.
SS Roderick Arias2-for-4, CS (9)
2B Enmanuel Tejeda1-for-3, R, BB
Tejeda is on an 8-game hitting streak that features eight 1-hit efforts (8-for-32; 4 BB, 2 K).
CF Willy Montero0-for-3, BB, K
1B Jackson Lovich1-for-4, RBI, SB (2), 2 K
You mean he wasn’t going to be able to keep up a 7-for-8 pace?  I guess he will accept 8-for-12.
3B Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek0-for-2, R, 2 SB (3), 2 BB, K
9-for-36 with five walks.
RF Richie Bonomolo Jr.: 1-for-2, 2 R, SB (3), BB
The Yankees drafted a Richie and signed an undrafted Robbie in July. These sound like kids who were hanging out playing stickball in the 1970s.
C Josue Gonzalez0-for-3
LF Hans Montero: 2-for-2, 2B (11), 3B (1), 2 RBI, SB (18), BB

RHP Ty Boudreau1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Boudreau’s professional debut. He reached 94 MPH with his 4-seam fastball. He also featured a curve, slider, and change-up.
RHP Mariano Salomon: (W, 1-4)  4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Since promotion: 4.71 ERA (28.2 IP, 26 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 5 HR, 9 BB, 24 K)
RHP Cole Zaffiro1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
His first appearance since July 26th.
RHP Gus Hughes1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Yankees MILB 8/6: George Lombard Jr. Triples

Notes:

The layout of the site has changed. Something went goofy with the other theme. This may or may not be permanent, but it works for now.

The promotions continued today, as infielders Juan Matheus and Owen Cobb were promoted to Hudson Valley alongside outfielder Tyler WilsonHudson Valley was also lacking in starting pitchers, so they received LHP Xavier Rivas and RHP Brandon Decker from Tampa.

First-round pick Dax Kilby will begin his professional journey in Tampa. He wasn’t in the lineup tonight, however. Those who were in the lineup include 1B Kyle West (13th round), OF Richie Bonomolo Jr. (7th), and infielder Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek (20th). All of them earned their first professional hits in their debuts.

Once again, promotions and roster shuffling come with the unfortunate business of players being released. Today, the Yankees let go of Hudson Valley infielders Brenny Escanio and Jose Colmenares. Escanio, acquired from the Brewers for J.P. Feyereisen in 2019, couldn’t get much going with the bat. This year, he is hitting .206/.331/.285 in 256 plate appearances. He stole ten bases but was also caught seven times. I wrote up a solid number of notes on Colmenares this season, due to a couple of hot streaks. However, the overall numbers weren’t great, as he hit .213/.312/.360 with six homers and 34 RBI over 331 plate appearances.

A night after Somerset, Hudson Valley, and Tampa swept the Mets’ affiliates, the Mets’ affiliates returned the favor.

Game 2 (Won, 12-9, in 9 innings. The game was tied, 4-4, entering the 9th)

2B Jorbit Vivas0-for-3, R, 2 BB
CF Spencer Jones0-for-3, SF, RBI, R, SB (13), CS (3), BB
Forget 20/20. Can Jones reach 30/30? He has 29 home runs and 23 stolen bases. His Triple-A batting average is down to .343, and he hasn’t homered in nine straight games (since his 3-HR game on July 24th. He missed the next few games due to back spasms and hasn’t been the same since.)
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-4, 2B (29), HR (13), 3 RBI, 2 R, BB, 2 K
After hitting .395/.476/.593 in July, Rumfield is 8-for-26 (.308) with a double, two home runs, and seven RBI in August. After a less-than-ideal April, Rumfield has been very good.
DH J.C. Escarra: 2-for-3, SF, RBI, K
  PR-DH-P Ismael Munguia1-for-1, HR (4, grand slam), 4 RBI, 2 R
Munguia entered the game as the ghost runner in the 9th, only to hit a grand slam later in the inning.

C Omar Martinez0-for-1, 2 R, HBP, 2 BB

RHP Harrison Cohen1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Cohen’s second career start (obviously, this was an emergency). Since promotion: 1.76 ERA (15.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 16 K)
RHP Baron Stuart1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K
RHP Joel Kuhnel2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Leonardo Pestana: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Jake Bird (W, 1-0) 1 IP, 0 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
His first inning of work was fine, but he didn’t have much in his second inning.
RHP Ismael Munguia1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
They were out of pitchers, so they turned to Munguia.

Somerset (56-48; 21-14 in second half) (Lost to Binghamton, 6-1)

SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-4, 3B (4), R
Lombard Jr. needed a solid game like this. He is 4-for-22 to begin August.
CF Jace Avina1-for-4, RBI, K
3B Dylan Jasso0-for-3, HBP
After hitting .243/.329/.399 last year, the Yankees still moved him up to Somerset. It worked, as he is hitting .281/.347/.463 in 403 plate appearances.
DH Garrett Martin1-for-4, 2B (11), K
.223/.293/.369 in 309 PA. For Hudson Valley last season, he hit .216/.326/.422 in 346 PA.
LF Brendan Jones1-for-4
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-3, BB, 2 K
RF Cole Gabrielson1-for-4, SB (14), 2 K
C Manuel Palencia0-for-3, K
2B Max Burt0-for-3, 2 K

RHP Ben Hess: (L, 0-1) 4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR
Hess, their 2024 first-round pick, makes his Double-A debut. Two of the three runs scored after he left the game.
RHP Cole Ayers0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Michael Arias1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
6.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 8 K. Like many minor leaguers, walks have been his issue (242/143 K/BB in 197.1 minor league innings).
RHP Hayden Merda1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Luis Pacheco1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (62-39; 24-13 second half) (Lost to Brooklyn, 7-3)

CF Dillon Lewis0-for-3, 2 BB
Walks are a big part of his game (8.6% BB rate at this level), but he isn’t helpless in that department. So many tools to work with.
SS Kaeden Kent0-for-3, R, 2 BB, K
Kent had a .398 OBP for Texas A&M this season.
C Engelth Urena1-for-5, R, 2 K
1B Coby Morales2-for-5, 3 K
LF Jackson Castillo1-for-5, RBI, SB (21), K

RF Anthony Hall0-for-2, 2 BB, K

RHP Brandon Decker: (L, 0-1)  5.2 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
Decker’s High-A debut didn’t go well, but he was thrown to the wolves. He started the season as a reliever and wasn’t asked to go more than 4.2 innings as a starter until tonight.
RHP Matt Keating1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Bryce Warrecker: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

West is a 22-year-old left-handed bat out of West Virginia.
DH Richie Bonomolo Jr.: 1-for-4, 2 R
The 21-year-old right-handed bat was drafted out of Alabama. He is an outfielder.
C Ediel Rivera0-for-4, 3 K
3B Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek1-for-4, K
Martin-Grudzielanek, the son of former MLB player Mark Grudzielanek, is a 22-year-old right-handed hitter from USC.

RHP Antonio Gomez: (L, 0-1)  0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Gomez reached 99.9 MPH with his fastball. Yes, you need a new hobby if you are going to complain about the runs he is giving up. That’s expected.

Yankees MILB 8/8: Caleb Durbin Drives in 3

News:

Nothing.

Scranton (61-47) (Defeated Lehigh Valley, 8-1, in the completion of last night’s suspended game. The second game of tonight’s doubleheader was postponed due to rain)

DH Caleb Durbin: 2-for-4, 2B (18), SF, 3 RBI, K
Including his time in Somerset/Tampa, Durbin has 20 doubles in 56 games.
CF Jasson Dominguez1-for-5, RBI, K
Dominguez is 6-for-32 (.188) since his latest comeback. From a statistical standpoint, that is the most important thing to watch.
3B Jorbit Vivas1-for-3, 2B (9), RBI, BB
For Scranton: .244/.383/.376 in 246 PA (15.0% BB, 17.5% K)
SS Oswald Peraza0-for-3, BB
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-3, RBI, BB, K
RF Taylor Trammell1-for-4, HR (11), RBI, RS, K
Trammell has 5 HR in his last eight games.
LF Jahmai Jones: 2-for-2, 2 2B (2), 4 RS, 2 BB
C J.C. Escarra1-for-1, 2B (5), RBI, 2 RS, 3 BB
Escarra is 17-for-46 (.370/.517/.543) since his promotion with 12 walks and 6 strikeouts. His journey is fascinating. He did some catching in college but the Orioles took him away from the position when they drafted him. Over the past few years, he has toiled in the independent/winter leagues, where he took up catching again. It could be his ticket to some MLB playing time. Until Jose Trevino returns, he is probably the #3 catcher (though they may view Ben Rice that way). The only other catcher on the Scranton roster is the little-used (as in 2 career plate appearances) Peter Serruto.
DH Josh VanMeter0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K

LHP Tanner Tully2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
“Why do they sign pitchers like Tully?” To eat minor league innings. With injuries, promotions, innings limits, etc., you need veteran arms in the minors. It’s that simple.
RHP Phil Bickford (W, 3-4);  1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
LHP Anthony Misiewicz1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
RHP Alex Mauricio1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, HR
1.60 ERA (33.2 IP, 24 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 19 BB, 38 K)
RHP Ron Marinaccio1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
I had a discussion on Discord about Marinaccio the other day. To me, the Yankees like him as a shuttle reliever and not a full-time MLB reliever. This is his last option year (unless he qualifies for an extra option next year) so they will likely try to trade him before Opening Day 2025.

Somerset (53-51)

Their game against Binghamton was postponed. I wouldn’t be enthusiastic about tomorrow. Smartly, they scheduled a doubleheader for Saturday.

Hudson Valley (54-49) (Defeated Brooklyn, 4-3, in ten innings)

2B Roc Riggio0-for-4, RS, SB (18), BB, K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 0-for-4, BB, K
CF Jace Avina2-for-4, 2B (23), RBI, K
Avina has three multi-hit efforts in his last seven games.
C Omar Martinez0-for-4, 2 K
1B Dylan Jasso0-for-3, RS, BB
DH Antonio Gomez1-for-3, 2B (9), RBI, RS, BB, K
Gomez has a 7-game hitting streak that features 6 doubles, a triple, and a home run. He has a .761 OPS  (.492 prior to this streak. That is not a typo).
RF Garrett Martin1-for-4, RBI, SB (11)
LF Christopher Familia0-for-4, RS, 3 K
3B Brenny Escanio1-for-3, BB

RHP Baron Stuart4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
RHP Sebastian Keane2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
4.71 ERA (72.2 IP, 65 H, 39 R, 38 ER, 6 HR, 36 BB, 72 K).
RHP Ocean Gabonia: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Gabonia’s High-A debut. He pitched to a 4.01 ERA in 49.1 IP for Tampa with a 55/13 K/BB.
RHP Harrison Cohen: (W, 1-0) 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Tampa (42-60) (Lost to Daytona, 6-1)

CF Brendan Jones: 0-for-3, SB (2), BB, 2 K
It can’t just be me who has Brett Gardner dreams when the Yankees draft a speedy center fielder.
SS Roderick Arias0-for-4, 3 K
RF Willy Montero1-for-3, BB
LF Tyler Wilson1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, RS, HBP
Wilson’s first professional hit is a home run. It went 384 feet at 103.5 MPH. In case you don’t read this every night (horrors!), he was their 8th round pick out of Grand Canyon. He is a switch-hitter who hit the HR batting left-handed.
2B Austin Green1-for-4, SB (1), 2 K
Green’s first professional hit!
3B Hans Montero0-for-3, BB, K
1B Coby Morales1-for-3, BB, 2 K
DH Parks Harber0-for-4, 2 K
C Josue Gonzalez0-for-3, BB

RHP Andrew Landry: (L, 0-1) 2.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
The results aren’t as important as the experience. The 22-year-old has 14.2 professional innings to his name.
LHP Rafelin Nivar2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, HR
RHP Luis Arejula2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Arejula was moved down here from Hudson Valley, where he pitched to a 2.90 ERA in 40.1 IP with a 38/21 K/BB. Because he was demoted to Tampa, we can look at some data. He pumped his fastball up to 95.5 MPH and seems to feature a 3-pitch mix (4-seamer, slider, changeup).
RHP Yoljeldriz Diaz1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K

FCL (35-22)

Their season is over.

SS Dexters Peralta1-for-3, 2B (7), RS, BB, K
CF Isael Arias2-for-3, RBI
1B Diego Flores1-for-3, RBI, SB (2)
The 17-year-old is 6-for-31 in his debut campaign. He is listed as a catcher (has played 3 innings behind the plate so far)

DSL Bombers (26-21) (Defeated the DSL Phillies Red, 7-2)
