Yankees MILB 8/15: Kaeden Kent Goes Yard

Alexander Vargas, one of the most expensive international players in the system, has been released.

The shortstop, who signed for $2.5 million in 2018, struggled to find a groove. In his debut 2019 campaign, he hit a decent .233/.313/.373 (97 wRC+) with a homer and 15 stolen bases. Like with every prospect, 2020 was a lost season as it was canceled due to COVID. Further complicating his development, he played in only 42 games in 2021.

In summary, after signing in 2018, he played in 90 games from 2019 to 2021. Using Pipeline, he ascended to the 13th position in the organization (2021) and appeared on their list in 2020, 2021, and 2022.

His prospect status eroded in 2022 (.203/.271/.311; 68 wRC+) and 2023 (.206/.248/.342; 59 wRC+). He hit better in 2024 (94 wRC+) and 2025 (92 wRC+), but that wasn’t enough to keep his job. At 23 years old, he could catch on elsewhere, especially since he has a solid defensive reputation.

By the way, one name I forgot about for a possible demotion once Fernando Cruz and Ryan Yarbrough are ready is Brent Headrick.  Pick two of three from Headrick, Yerry De los Santos, and Cam Schlittler. Some of that depends on what Yarbrough’s role will be.

That was unsustainable, but there is no doubt that his slump is a deep one. Also, the strikeouts are appearing in bulk.

Jones is 36-for-43 in the stolen base department this season and continues to have a higher OPS here (.774) than he had in Hudson Valley (.711).

Jasso isn’t a big walker (7.6%). Stealing bases? 3-for-5 in his career. Whether he can hit consistently will determine his future.

Kilby is 2-for-17 with a pair of stolen bases. This is about getting his feet wet heading into the off-season.  That would be true even if he were 12-for-17.

Toole’s 3-run home run tied the game in the 9th. He is hitting .301/.403/.493 in 325 PA. Five home runs in 325 plate appearances doesn’t qualify as a power surge, but Toole has impressed this season with his combination of speed and extra-base hits. We’ll see if he can maintain it at higher levels, but many prospects don’t progress beyond this point.

They have won three in a row and will probably need to win on Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday. Their final three games are against DSL Colorado (21-31), DSL Miami (36-17), and DSL Mets Blue (18-35).

MLB Pipeline posted their August update, which includes the 2025 draftees.

The Yankees placed four prospects on their Top 100, headlined by SS George Lombard Jr. (25th). Also making the list: RHP Carlos Lagrange (82), RHP Cam Schlittler (91), and OF Spencer Jones (92). Jones is an addition after their “trade deadline” update.

As for their Top 30, up next is RHP Bryce Cunningham. Their second-round pick in 2024 is ranked higher than their first-round pick (Ben Hess is 7th). Sandwiched between the two is another right-handed pitcher:  Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz. 2025 first-rounder Dax Kilby is 8th. Other 2025 draftees on the list are 2B/SS Kaeden Kent (13th), LHP Pico Kohn (15th), and SS Core Jackson (18th). All have appeared in my report except for Kohn, who was their 4th-round pick out of Alabama. You haven’t seen him yet because drafted pitchers don’t make same-season debuts at nearly the same rate as position players. SS Roderick Arias took an expected tumble, as he is down to 21st. Debuting teenage shortstops Mani Cedeno (22nd) and Stiven Marinez (30th) are likely where they should be at this stage in their careers. Marinez has outperformed Cedeno, but Cedeno is younger and entered the season with more prospect “shine.”

In recent times, their prospect list has included a decent number of catchers. With the trades of Rafael Flores, Jesus Rodriguez, and Edgleen Perez, they no longer have a catcher in the Top 30. You can make a case for Engelth Urena, but it’s not a massive snub. It’s hard to find any prospect whom I would label as an obvious snub.

I have no issues with the list. We can nitpick with rankings and whether their 35th-ranked prospect should be included over their 29th-ranked prospect. When you get down to that level, there is a list of several prospects to choose from, and it becomes a matter of personal preference. Would I place Rodriguez-Cruz over Cunningham? Probably, but we are talking about one spot in the rankings.

Scranton (67-44; 29-10 in second half) 

Day off.

Right now, the second-half title is a two-horse race between Scranton and Syracuse, who are 29-10. They have one series left (August 26-31 in Scranton). Indianapolis has fallen off the pace (24-15) but can get back into it this week, as they play Scranton.

Somerset (58-50; 23-16 in second half) 

Day off.

Somerset is 1.5 games up on Hartford in the race for the second-half title. Binghamton is ahead of both, but that is irrelevant since they won the first-half title.

Hudson Valley (65-40; 27-14 second half)

Day off.

At 65-40, the Renegades are having a fantastic season – one that can easily end without a playoff berth. Unfortunately for them, Brooklyn won the first-half tiebreaker over Greensboro. That’s important, as Greensboro is 31-11 in the second half. That would be irrelevant if they won the first half, but that’s how it goes.

Tampa (48-56; 12-27 in the second half)

Day off.

Their season is over.

I am not sure why Stiven Marinez didn’t play, especially since they were off yesterday. Hopefully, it’s still just a routine day off.

With the presence of Marinez, Done doesn’t get much time at shortstop. The 18-year-old has played well in his debut campaign: .275/.403/.443 in 159 PA with four homers and 26 RBI.

When you trade prospects, movement is likely. C Omar Martinez was moved from Somerset to Scranton, while C Manuel Palencia was moved from Hudson Valley to Somerset. Scranton further filled in their roster by activating infielder Jake Gatewood and OF Ismael Munguia off the Development List.

As for Tampa’s catching situation, they currently have Engelth Urena, Josue Gonzalez, and Juan Sanchez active. Urena was splitting time between catcher and designated hitter with Edgleen Perez, who was traded to the Pirates on Thursday.

The Yankees have released UTIL Nicky Lopez. This was Lopez’s decision, as he exercised an opt-out clause which forced the Yankees’ hand.  He wasn’t with the organization for long (17 games) and will look for a better opportunity elsewhere.

With the release of Marcus Stroman, it is fair to ask about the Yankees’ pitching depth. The Yankees felt that Cam Schlittler‘s MLB development was worth the inconvenience of less rotation depth.

Ryan Yarbrough appears to be a while away from returning, leaving Allan Winans as someone they can call up in an emergency. Brendan Beck pitched well for Somerset but owns a 4.86 ERA in 33.1 innings for Scranton. Some of that is attributed to a spike in his home run rate. That said, he is a strike thrower who may be able to limit the damage a few times around the lineup. Sean Boyle is 28 and has been toiling in the system since 2018. He owns a 4.58 ERA, 23.5% K, and 45.7% GB in 92.1 innings for Scranton.

I doubt they would think about Carlos Lagrange or Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz in 2025, but keep them somewhere in the back of your mind.

None of the Scranton arms are going to jump out at you and get you excited. But, in a “break glass” situation, that’s what we have.

I will note that trades aren’t completely dead. Players who are on minor league contracts and have not appeared on a 40-man roster this year are eligible to be traded. You rarely see prospect-for-prospect moves, but there could be a veteran on someone’s minor league roster that comes into play in this scenario as well. The Yankees will also monitor the waiver wire.

I didn’t say any of this was ideal. However, I also can’t complain about giving a rookie a chance to prove himself over the next several weeks.

In case you were wondering (you weren’t), there wasn’t a minor league report last night because all four full-season affiliate teams were rained out. Today, three of those squads played doubleheaders.

In addition to catching the shutout, Martinez earns a hit in his Triple-A debut.  Is he the next catcher to watch closely? Given that he is in Triple-A now, yes. Offensively, he is profiling as a low-average hitter with some patience and pop. He is hitting .227/.323/.378 in 347 PA between Hudson Valley/Somerset/Scranton with 11 home runs and 46 RBI. 

RHP Erick Leal: (W, 7-7): 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K
Can Leal also enter the depth chart conversation? Why not? He would make for a good story, given that he is 30 and has yet to make his MLB debut. His overall numbers aren’t impressive (5.09 ERA in 93.2 IP with a 106/35 K/BB). However, through June 18th, he was 1-7 with a 7.35 ERA. He is a sinker/slider/splitter/slider guy who reached 92.2 MPH with his sinker today. That is about as much as I ever thought I would write about Erick Leal.

Game 2 (Won, 8-3. Leal’s complete game effort kept the bullpen fresh. They needed to use four relievers to get through this one.)

A quiet 1-for-7 day for Jones. He is back under .400 since his promotion (.383/.440/.862 in 109 PA).

Rumfield continues his hitting ways. He is up to .315/.397/.507 in 403 plate appearances with 28 doubles, a triple, 12 homers, and 70 RBI. I read an article by Tim Kurkjian about the decline of the “traditional” first baseman. When reading this article, you can what hurts Rumfield (lack of versatility) and what could potentially help him (an emphasis on defense). Someone will give him a shot – but it will likely require a small trade or when he can be signed as a minor league free agent.

I assume that Candelario has an opt-out somewhere in his deal as well (most veteran minor league signings do). Since it is typically around the first of the month, I wonder if he decided to stay?

C Antonio Gomez was placed on the Development List for Somerset. Normally, I don’t care much about that list, but Gomez jumps out because he was, at one time, one of the top catching prospects in the system.

Gomez’s bat has stalled. This season, he is hitting .140/.225/.168 (26 wRC+) in 121 plate appearances for the Patriots. This comes after a (somewhat) promising 2024 campaign, where he hit .241/.329/.419 (111 wRC+) in 222 plate appearances between Tampa and Hudson Valley.

With Luke Weaver‘s return imminent, Jayvien Sandridge‘s stint in New York will likely be short. Sandridge, who has a similar profile to Jake Diekman (pitched in 705 games, believe it or not), starts his service time clock, gets his union card, and earns MLB medical benefits. Schlittler reached 99.1 MPH and averaged 97.4. Furthermore, he generated an incredible 19 whiffs (and spread them out – 4-seamer (7), slider (5), sweeper (4), curveball (3)). With this type of performance often comes with a consequence: Pitches. He needed 94 to generate the 15 outs.  Since promotion: 2.35 ERA (15.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 24 K). Overall: 2.37 ERA (68.1 IP, 58 H, 23 R, 18 ER, 3 HR, 24 BB, 88 K). It’s going to become tempting to call him up and fans will start asking for it. When will that happen?  For now, they don’t need a starter so he can continue to work on what he needs to work on.

Those numbers are skewed by one bad start among his three. Overall, between here and Hudson Valley, he owns a 84/20 K/BB over 57 innings.

One of the Yankees’ most surprising prospects in 2024 is on a rehab stint. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2023, Shields pitched at three levels in his 2024 debut season (Hudson Valley, Somerset, Scranton (one start)). Combined, he went 5-5 with a 3.48 ERA (3.23 FIP) over 106 innings with a 31.1% K and 7.5% BB. His numbers were solid, yet skewed negatively by that one emergency Scranton appearance (1.2 IP, 8 H, 9 R, 7 ER).

It finally happened! Palencia hits his first career home run in his 150th game. Yes, it’s one of those baseball things that he hits his first career home run on a day he falls a single short of the cycle (he hit a double in his final at-bat. Jeff Frye would have stopped at first base). He is 22 years old and has played only as high as Low-A, but this is a nice moment of him.

As I said the other day, this is a huge year for the bonus baby. Ideally, he would have crushed this league in 2024 and would be in the FCL right now. That didn’t happen, so he has to crush this league now.

Nothing like getting that first professional home run out of the way in your first professional game. Bello signed for $350,000.
3B Richard Matic: 1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, R
Matic hits his first professional home run. Matic signed for $850,000. Like Vilorio, he struggled here in 2024 (.196/.333/.248 in 186 PA)
C Justin Capellan: 2-for-4, 2B (1), R
The 18-year-old hit .242/.365/.359 with 12 doubles in 41 games at this level in 2024. The Yankees used money acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates for Billy McKinney to sign Capellan. “Why didn’t the Pirates simply use that money for international prospects instead of trading it for a retread like McKinney?”  Do you even need to ask?
DH Carlos Villarroel: 0-for-4, K
Villarroel returns coming off of an impressive .299/.390/.410 campaign in 2024. Last season, he split time between catcher and first base.

A 16-year-old launching a home run in his professional debut is impressive. Castillo was a $750,000 investment during the 2025 signing period. He is a right-handed bat.

Impressive professional debut for the 17-year-old. The Yankees gave Marinez a $1.65 million signing bonus near the end of the 2024 signing period (Cedeno, who received $2.5 million, was part of the 2025 class)

I remember Pineda from last year, and it isn’t because of his unique first name. He hit .254/.434/.438 in 44 games with nine doubles and five home runs. He drew an impressive 41 walks in 173 PA (23.7%).  He signed for $350,000 in 2024.
DH David Carrera: 0-for-4, RBI, BB, 2 K
The 18-year-old played well down here in 2024 (.278/.402/.418). When it comes to kids who don’t get the extreme signing bonuses, they just need to put their heads down and keep performing to get noticed. Not the same situation, but Andy Pettitte always talked about needing to prove himself every step of the way.

Reyes signed for $100,000 in 2024. Last year, as a 16-year-old, he hit .250/.346/.314 in 179 plate appearances.
