Yankees MILB 7/9: The Spencer Jones Show

Notes:

As I said last night, pulling a player from the lineup doesn’t mean they were traded.

OF Everson Pereira is sick. OF Bryan De La Cruz is injured.

As for DJ LeMahieu, I have been rough on him over the last few seasons, as he hasn’t been productive. The only reason why it should be shocking that he was designated for assignment is because of the money he is owed and his clubhouse presence. Will he end up somewhere, or is he going down the path of Anthony Rizzo? I would bet more on the latter, but a team in desperate need at second base can take a flyer.

If he stays in the minors the rest of the season, he has a legitimate shot at 30 home runs. The last Yankees prospect to accomplish that was Dermis Garcia, who hit 31 in 2021.

RHP Colten Brewer, on his third tour with the Yankees organization, was released. In 22 games for Scranton, he pitched to a 3.94 ERA and 32/15 K/BB over 29.2 innings.

A lot happened on the farm today, as the affiliates went 6-0 while scoring 46 runs.

Rodriguez needed a game like this (4-for-38 slump entering tonight). His overall average (including his time with Somerset) has dipped below .300 (.295). For Scranton, he’s at .318/.407/.399 in 273 PA.

The home run was crushed (412 feet at 108.1 MPH). Jones (6-for-16 since his promotion) sets a new personal best with his 19th home run (53rd game) and has nine homers in his last 17 games. This breaks his streak of homering every other day, as he has homered in back-to-back games. I am sure he isn’t disappointed.

.228/.323/.305 in 300 PA. Since June 15th, he is 15-for-57 (.263).

When Lewis gets on base, he can cause havoc (20-for-21 stealing bases in his career). Between here and Tampa, he has 12 doubles, 13 HR, 42 RBI, 43 runs, and 17 stolen bases in 18 attempts.
DH Coby Morales: 0-for-3, K
SS Alexander Vargas: 1-for-3
Vargas extends his hitting streak to 11 (18-for-41).

Carr needed 87 pitches (60 strikes) to accomplish the shutout. On a night like tonight, it wasn’t even enough to secure the headline. Tough crowd, I am!  He owns a 2.57 ERA in 70 IP (47 H, 28 R, 20 ER, 5 HR, 35 BB, 57 K). The H/IP ratio stands out the most.

Tampa (43-33) (Outscored Clearwater, 13-7)

C Edgleen Perez: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB, K
Is the patience paying off?  Last nine games: 12-for-38 (.316) with ten walks. He is up to 57 walks in 307 PA (18.6%) and has 132 walks in 157 career games. A reminder that he turned 19 on May 25th and is showing off this level of plate discipline. 
CF Brian Sanchez: 1-for-4, HR (4), 3 RBI, 2 R, BB, 3 K
.284/.372/.450 in 249 PA (15 doubles, 4 triples, 4 HR, 35 RBI, 35 R, 24-for-28 SB). He has walked six times in his last three games, and all four of his homers have come since June 13th.
SS Roderick Arias: 3-for-5, 2 HR (4), 5 RBI, 2 R, 2 K
To say Arias needed a night like this is an understatement. It’s his second career multi-HR game (7/6/2023). Arias has shown a little life recently, raising his triple slash from .168/.306/.255 to .192/.316/.303. He has to start somewhere.
DH Engelth Urena: 1-for-5, SB (8), K
Known for his pop, he has sneakily added eight stolen bases. That said, any speed catchers have in the minors tends to dissipate as they get closer to MLB. 
3B Juan Matheus: 0-for-5, 2 K

Toole is an exciting player – whether he is an exciting career minor league player or a potential MLB player is what we need to determine. He’s hitting .295/.393/.459 in 214 PA.

Between here and the FCL, Gomez is 22-for-24 stealing bases (9-for-10 here). He started 2-for-22 after his promotion. Since then, he is 6-for-25 (.240) with six walks and eight stolen bases. With Owen Cobb activated, it will be interesting to see how they figure out the playing time situation.

In the 10th, he swatted a ground ball single to right to win it.  Yes, the strikeouts are high and will likely never be great, but Jones is not up there looking to hit the scoreboard with every swing.

The Bombers had 19 runs on ten hits with 13 walks. Additionally, they were hit by a pitch seven times. The Bombers scored six runs in the 7th as they tried for the miracle win.)

Yankees MILB 6/10: Pitching Rules the Night

Notes:

RHP Bryce Cunningham‘s return from the injured list was short-lived, as he is back on the list after only one start.

Cunningham has arguably impressed the most from last year’s pitching class, compiling a 1.93 ERA (3.33 FIP) over 46.2 innings with a 25.7% K, 6% BB, and 45.4% GB.

The Yankees released veteran LHP Brandon Leibrandt. In 41 innings for Scranton, Leibrandt posted a 2.85 ERA (4.70 FIP). He was recently placed on the inactive list before his release.

According to Erik Boland, RHP Jake Cousins has halted his rehab stint due to “feeling something” in his elbow. That’s never good. A pleasant surprise for the 2024 club, Cousins compiled a 2.37 ERA (4.06 FIP) with a 34.2% K and 12.9% BB over 38 innings.

Unless you live under a boulder, you already know about Giancarlo Stanton‘s rehab stint. It will be interesting to see what the Yankees do with their roster when he returns. No doubt that Pablo Reyes is their most dispensable player, but he does nothing more than occupy bench space. The biggest question is what happens with Ben Rice, who figures to lose the most playing time. Rice’s numbers have dipped lately, but a look at his Savant page shows a strong hitter who may be hitting in bad luck (his June BABIP is .176).

C Alex Jackson opted out of his minor league deal. However, he has re-signed and was back in the Scranton lineup tonight. This is the second time Jackson has opted out (he did it in March as well). He has some leverage on the Yankees, as he is the organization’s #3 catcher. He is using his opt-out clauses to secure more money. I would, too.

RHP Cam Schlittler was promoted to Scranton. Schlittler was among the best pitchers in the Eastern League, pitching to a 2.38 ERA and league-leading 2.18 FIP over 53 innings. Including 2024, Schlittler tossed 85.1 Double-A innings before earning his promotion.

Can he get to MLB in 2025? Yes. When it comes to debuts, you want to look at two things: Can we make room on the 40-man roster, and what is his Rule 5 status?  If Schlittler wasn’t Rule 5 eligible until after 2026, that lessens his chances of getting called up. However, in this case, he is Rule 5 eligible this winter. He is instantly high on the depth chart. Other than Allan Winans, nobody in Triple-A has pitched well enough to “block” Schlittler.

There was a chain reaction of promotions, as RHP Carlos Lagrange was moved to Somerset to replace Schlittler. Additionally, position players Roc Riggio (2B) and Brendan Jones (OF) were reassigned to Somerset, while OF Dillon Lewis was transferred from Tampa to Hudson Valley. All four of these kids are legitimate prospects. I am excited to see how Lagrange handles the upper minors.

Yankees MILB 5/6: George Lombard Jr.’s Somerset Debut

Notes:

Outfielder Spencer Jones was placed on the injured list for Somerset, robbing us of a chance to see arguably the top two prospects in the system in the same lineup. In a related move, Christopher Familia was activated from the Development List.

RP Scott Effross (yes, he does exist) is on a rehab stint in the FCL.

Speaking of the FCL, 2B Roc Riggio was activated off the injured list for Hudson Valley. He played only two rehab games for the FCL squad before his activation.

DJ LeMahieu‘s rehab was moved up to Scranton.

Carlos Carrasco being DFA’d was not surprising from a performance perspective. The Yankees, however, remain short when it comes to starting pitchers. He could clear waivers and come back, but that’s hardly exciting. They can start Ryan Yarbrough for now, with the potential to see Allan Winans take a turn or two. It’s going to be a revolving door and evolving story until/unless they add someone more stable.

Since it happened after I posted my report on Sunday, SS George Lombard Jr. is now in Somerset. That’s news to nobody’s ears.  I agree with this move, as High-A was not challenging him.  Double-A is the ultimate test for every prospect, and Lombard Jr. will be the youngest player in the Eastern League. I know the fanbase doesn’t understand patience, but be patient. If he dominates Double-A from the jump, he might just be a unicorn. If he doesn’t, he is still a top prospect. It’s a win-win, and it will be fun to watch.

Yankees MILB 4/4: Griffin Herring Dazzles in Debut

Notes:

The Yankees have signed C/OF Cooper Hummel to a minor league deal after he elected free agency yesterday. The Astros outrighted him off their 40-man roster, and he had the right to declare free agency.

While listed as a C/OF, Hummell hasn’t caught at any level since 2023 (96 innings). Offensively, the 30-year-old hasn’t done much with his limited MLB playing time, hitting .159/.255/.275 (51 OPS+) over 235 PA. He has clubbed three homers and driven home 17. If tomorrow’s Immaculate Grid has any combination of Diamondbacks, Mariners, and Astros, remember his name. He has appeared in MLB for all three organizations.

For the Yankees, he is depth.

The Yankees added the versatile Rodriguez to the 40-man roster this past winter. Listed as a catcher, he also has minor league experience at 1B/2B/3B/LF. So far in his career, he has hit everywhere they place him. Double-A (where he struggled a bit in 23 games last year) will be his ultimate test.
CF Spencer Jones: 0-for-4, HBP, 2 K
Must I say anything? Jones remains the ultimate boom-bust prospect in a sport where boom-bust prospects are more the norm than the exception. He must show more progress in 2025. The clock has started to tick (Rule 5 eligible this winter).
C Rafael Flores: 1-for-4, SB (1), 2 K
Flores (24) has jumped up on prospect radars. Upon his promotion here in 2024, he hit .274/.359/.519 with 15 home runs in only 65 games. Can he catch long-term or is first base his future calling?  We should expect to hear his name thrown around at the trade deadline if he continues to rake.

Only 22, Jasso hit 30 doubles in 120 games in 2024.

Vargas had a fun spring, going 8-for-14 with two doubles, three homers, and 7 RBI. While that doesn’t tell us anything, it was a nice story for him. He was once a highly-regarded bonus baby. He is trying to regain some steam.

SS Jake Gatewood: 2-for-3, 3 RBI, CS (1), BB
Where do the Yankees find these guys? Tonight was his first appearance in affiliated ball since 2022, where he hit .211/.261/.439 in 108 games for the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate in Salt Lake. Last year, he was the Bobby Witt Jr. of the independent Atlantic League. He hit .295/.395/.607 in 506 PA with 34 doubles, 33 HR, and 121 RBI.

The Yankees invited Schlittler to spring training. Yes, I think you should read into that – who gets invited vs. who doesn’t can show you where the Yankees currently stand with a prospect (especially those at the upper levels). Can he get to MLB in 2025? It’s not impossible.

The 22-year-old left-handed bat made an immediate impression in his debut 2024 season. In 24 games, he hit .267/.471/.453 with 5 doubles, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 16 R, 29 BB, 21 K, and 18 stolen bases in 18 attempts. He was their 12th round pick out of Kansas State.

Spring training certainly raised the hype for the teenager, but let’s calm down for a second. He is still more projection than production. He may not make it to Somerset as a teenager (he turns 20 on 6/2), but we’ll see.

In a late-season trial at this level, Castillo thrived (.314/.383/.514 in 21 games). 
RF Jace Avina: 0-for-3, BB, K
Acquired from the Brewers for Jake Bauers, Avina (21) hit .245/.317/.399 in 397 PA at this level in 2024. 
C Omar Martinez: 2-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, SB (1), K
The Yankees had Martinez play a full season at Tampa in 2023 and Hudson Valley in 2024. They decided not to start him at Somerset in 2025. Is there anything to read into that? Nah.

Once considered (by me and others!) as the top pure catching prospect in the system, Gomez has never put the entire package together. That said, even though it seems he has been here for an eternity, he is only 23, and late-blooming catchers aren’t uncommon.

LHP Kyle Carr: (L, 0-1)  4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K
It’s not the most efficient outing, but it is an effective one. The Yankees aggressively placed Carr at this level in 2024 without any experience anywhere else, and he went 1-8 with a 4.76 ERA over 104 IP (95/55 K/BB). They are hoping that experience translates into better results in 2025.
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
After an effective 2023 debut season for Tampa, Gilbert was limited to only five games in 2024. He will hopefully pick up from where he left off.

It’s a big season for Arias, who hit .233/.335/.393 with 21 doubles, 8 triples, 13 HR, 74 RBI, 78 R, and 37 stolen bases in 50 attempts at this level last year. When asked how I would describe him, I always say his athletic ability carries him. In other words, he can make up for his shortcomings with his pure athleticism. As you move up the chain, that’s not enough to become MLB-viable. We’ll see how 2025 unfolds.
DH Edgleen Perez: 0-for-2
Full-season league debut for Perez, a catcher who hit .283/.444/.380 in 216 PA for the FCL squad last year. He had more walks (45) than strikeouts (35). We’ll see if he can keep a strong ratio at a more advanced level (don’t expect more BB than K!). As for why he left the game, I am not sure.
   PH-DH Juan Matheus: 1-for-2
The 20-year-old switch-hitter dominated in the FCL last season. At this level, he went 1-for-13 with a pair of stolen bases.
CF Brian Sanchez: 3-for-4, 2B (1), RBI
Also acquired in the Bauers’ deal, Sanchez earned his promotion by hitting .306/.394/.514 with 16 stolen bases in 19 attempts in the FCL last year.

Only 20, Urena destroyed the FCL (.301/.420/.564 in 162 PA) to earn his spot here in 2025. He’s a fun long-range lottery ticket to follow.

The 21-year-old is having a nice, consistent campaign.

Carr continues his recent stretch of strong pitching. His last 7 starts: 1.01 ERA (26.2 IP, 19 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 14 BB, 21 K). Overall: 4.69 ERA (96 IP, 86 H, 60 R, 50 ER, 5 HR, 51 BB, 89 K). He entered his debut season with a lot of buzz. However, he stumbled for a while before finding his footing. I don’t think they give him a late-season Double-A start, but it is possible.

RHP Huey Morrill: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
At this level: 3.30 ERA (43.2 IP, 38 H, 21 R, 16 ER, 6 HR, 14 BB, 45 K). Morrill was listed as a shortstop when the Yankees signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State last year (for good reason: He played 148 games in the field for Oklahoma State while making only 17 appearances on the hill)

This is how you keep the “Manfred Man” from scoring. Since being acquired: 6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K. The Yankees acquired the 23-year-old from the Astros for Caleb Ferguson.
