Arizona Fall League Players

The High-A All-Star teams were announced today.

In the South Atlantic League, two Yankees prospects were named.

RHP Huey Morrill – Morrill compiled a 0.42 ERA (2.77 FIP), 25.5% K, 8.1% BB, and 49.5% GB over 43.1 innings. The Angels drafted him in the 36th round in 2018, but he did not sign. The Yankees signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2022 after spending a pair of seasons with Oklahoma State. He is one of the Yankees’ representatives in the Arizona Fall League and is Rule 5 eligible this winter.

LHP Kyle Carr – Carr didn’t just make the team; he won the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year Award. The third-round pick in the 2023 draft had a breakout campaign, compiling a 1.96 ERA (3.59 FIP) over 119.1 innings. Additionally, he owned a 21.7% K, 9.8% BB, and 51.7% GB. From June 3rd through August 28th, he compiled a 0.98 ERA over 82.1 innings. That earned him a promotion to Somerset, where he didn’t fare well over three starts. That shouldn’t bother anyone.

Scranton (85-58; 47-24 in second half) (Defeated Buffalo, 6-1)

Syracuse has a 4-2 lead in the 7th inning against Lehigh Valley. If they win, Scranton’s magic number is 2. If they lose, the magic number is 1.

A reminder that, in Triple-A, there’s only one round of playoffs in each league. If Scranton wins the second half, they will play Jacksonville for the International League title. The winner of that series will play the winner of the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A Championship Game (yes, only one game) in Las Vegas. Speaking of Las Vegas (ATH), they won the first half in the PCL and will likely play Tacoma (SEA) for the PCL Championship.

Vivas’ first non-double extra-base hit since June 11th (he compiled 14 doubles during this timeframe).

Jones’ 35th home run places him one ahead of Ryan Ward (LAD) for the minor league lead. He scores his 100th run, making him the first Yankees’ farmhand to score 100+ runs since Anthony Volpe (113) in 2021.  One blast went 427 feet at 1081. MPH, while the other went 376 feet at 104.2 MPH.  This is his 5th multi-HR effort, his five RBI are a season high, and he is the owner of a 19-game on-base streak.

Between Somerset and Scranton, Beck finishes the season 13-5 with a 3.36 ERA over 131.1 innings (103 H, 51 R, 49 ER, 14 HR, 36 BB, 123 K). Drafted in the second round in the 2021 draft, this is Beck’s first healthy campaign (his only professional experience before this season was the 34 innings he tossed in 2023).

An efficient 8-pitch inning for Castro, who lowers his ERA to 1.57.

3.33 ERA (24.1 IP, 17 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 2 HR, 21 BB, 33 K). His fastball/cutter combination is enticing, but you can’t walk that many hitters.

Syracuse won to pull within three games of the lead.  Lehigh Valley is within six games. The Phillies are 82-55 overall, so this is not an easy opponent.

Jones is having a fun September: 6-for-22 (.273) with a pair of doubles, seven runs, eight walks, and a 7-for-7 stolen base rate. He will win the organization’s stolen base title (45), and his 84 runs rank third (behind Spencer Jones (94) and George Lombard Jr. (87)). When a player is promoted from High-A to Double-A and does better, that is something you need to pay attention to.

My thoughts on Core Jackson.

LHP Kyle Carr was promoted from Hudson Valley to Somerset. Carr certainly earned the promotion, posting a 1.96 ERA (3.60 FIP) over 119.1 innings with a 21.7% K, 9.8% BB, and 51.7% GB. That is impressive, but his last 14 starts are from a different universe: 0.98 ERA in 82.1 innings with a 24.6% K and 9.3% BB.

Injury Log

Scranton (79-52; 41-18 in second half) (Defeated Worcester, 5-1)

Syracuse won, so they remain four games out.  The season ends on September 21. In case you don’t remember, whoever wins the second half takes on Jacksonville for the International League Championship and a spot in Las Vegas to take on the PCL champion for the overall Triple-A Championship.

Vivas has four multi-hit efforts in his last six games. He has four doubles during this stretch.

Slater’s first full game in the field during his rehab stint. That is typically the biggest step before being called up.

Jones has a 41.0% K going back to August 1st. That’s a decent sample (134 plate appearances). Yikes. Entering tonight, his wRC+ during this timeframe was 46.

Baseball is a crazy sport. Even players who have seemingly “mastered” a level can go into deep slumps. A 2-for-32 slump has Rumfield down to .284 with a .827 OPS.

Given his reputation as a masher without much else in his offensive game, it is surprising that this is his first home run since July 27th. It’s not as if he’s been in a slump, either. He hit .320/.363/.427 in August.

Greensboro increases their lead to 3.5 games. It’s as simple as this: Hudson Valley needs to win the final four games in this series to go to the playoffs.

Matheus was down to .221 on August 29th. A 6-for-15 surge has him back to .250 (24 games at this level).

Since his 0-for-9 start, Kilby has hit safely in 11 of 13 games (reached base safely in his last 14 games). I said yesterday that is highly unlikely he will start 2026 in High-A. What do I base that on?  George Lombard Jr. played nine games for Low-A Tampa in 2023 and hit pretty well (9-for-33; he followed that up by going 6-for-21 with four doubles in the playoffs.)  In 2024, he still played 81 games for Tampa before moving to Hudson Valley.
SS Roderick Arias: 0-for-2, R, SB (33), BB, 2 K
2B Enmanuel Tejeda: 0-for-2, BB
.241/.388/.339 in 139 PA. He has more walks (25) than strikeouts (17) to go along with a 11-for-14 stolen base rate.

.308/.406/.487 in 362 PA (14 doubles, 13 triples, 5 HR, 48 RBI, 65 R, 43-for-49 SB, 13.5% BB, 19.9% K). He is on a 6-game hitting streak.

A nice double-header for Martin-Grudzielanek (3-for-6, 2 triples, HR, SF, 4 RBI, 2 R). This spikes his triple slash to .254/.307/.448 (he entered the day at .230/.294/.328. The beauty of small sample sizes.)

Facundo (who turned 23 today) was humming in the 96-97 range. At this level: 2.14 ERA (33.2 IP, 22 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 0 HR, 14 BB, 35 K). I don’t mind saying the same thing over and over if I believe it: Facundo likely belonged on Pipeline’s August update.

Yankees MILB 8/28: Kyle Carr: Cheat Code?

My thoughts on Core Jackson.

After allowing a pair of runs but striking out three in the first inning last night, RHP Trent Sellers was pulled from the game. Today, he was placed on the 7-day injured list. Sellers, signed in 2023 as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon State, has been a solid contributor in the Somerset Patriots’ rotation. He has a 3.92 ERA in 96.1 innings with a 26.9% K, 12.1% BB, and 36.1% BB. The Yankees have not asked him to stretch out often (his 96.1 innings are over 22 starts), though this is his first professional season as a full-time starter. He was also a starter in his one season for Oregon State.

Jonathan Loaisiga‘s season is over. It is likely true that his Yankees career is also over, though they would likely not turn down a bargain.

A solid find by the scouting department, health has never been on his side. He made 193 appearances in eight seasons for the Yankees, with 107 of those occurring between 2021 and 2022.

His overall career has been rather solid: A 3.54 ERA (3.86 FIP) over 294.1 innings with a 54.4% ground ball rate (the MLB average during this time is 42.4%).

He will only be 31 to begin the 2026 season, and there is little doubt that a team will take a flyer on him. He’s cheap, and you never know when a player will have a random healthy campaign. The Yankees, however, are probably ready to move on.

Toole has missed a little bit of time lately. Tonight, he was back to his old tricks. He is hitting .306/.406/.495 in 342 PA (14 doubles, 13 triples, 5 HR, 45 RBI, 61 R, 42-for-47 SB, 13.7% BB, 20.5% K).  He is the only player in the Florida State League hitting over .300 (the only qualifier above .290) and is second in OBP and SLG. As I always state: Yes, some good-to-great prospects have indeed moved on from this level and no longer qualify (Pittsburgh’s 19-year-old phenom Konnor Griffin hit .338/.396/.536 in 50 games before going to High-A). However, it’s not a season to dismiss for Toole, whom I am intrigued to see in the upper levels.

Released on August 3rd, UTIL Andrew Velazquez was re-signed today and assigned to Scranton. He didn’t sign anywhere else over the past several days.

Catcher-turned-pitcher Antonio Gomez was placed on the 7-day injured list today. Gomez, routinely hitting the high-90s and touching into the 100+ range, was (predictably) struggling with other aspects of pitching. Hopefully, this is just the Yankees shutting him down for a bit (possibly the rest of the season) and not a significant injury.

RHP Fernando Cruz and LHP Ryan Yarbrough are officially on rehab stints. When Cruz is ready, Yerry De los Santos (who has done a solid job, Wednesday night notwithstanding) is a logical demotion.  Sorry to say it, but Cam Schlittler is the most logical to end up back in Scranton once Yarbrough is ready.

Lewis joins Spencer Jones in the organization’s 20/20 club (20 HR, 22 SB between here and Tampa). He has three 3-hit performances in his last seven games, and he is hitting .251/.321/.479 in 241 PA since his promotion. Overall, he is hitting .251/.322/.478 in 436 PA with 19 doubles, 5 triples, 20 HR, 74 RBI, 61 R, and 22 stolen bases in 24 attempts. He owned a high K% in Low-A, but has dropped it considerably at the higher level. He is a legit prospect to watch as he marches towards Somerset.

OF Jackson Castillo was promoted from Hudson Valley to Somerset. Castillo, a 22-year-old outfielder, was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2023. For Hudson Valley this year, he hit .242/.337/.336 with five home runs, 47 RBI, and 21 stolen bases in 22 attempts. He will be joined by SS Alexander Vargas and 1B/OF Coby Morales (both played for Somerset earlier this season)

Hudson Valley will welcome OF Joe Delossantos (who has played in only one game this season – a rehab game before the FCL season ended) and several 2025 draftees/signings: Outfielders Camden Troyer (12th round) and Robbie Burnett (undrafted free agent), along with SS Core Jackson (5th).

Once again, movement comes with releases. The Yankees released OF Anthony Hall and 1B Kiko Romero. Hall, their 4th-round pick in 2022, hit .234/.333/.358 in 182 minor league games. A standout for the University of Oregon, Hall injured himself during his first professional at-bat in 2022. Whether that impacted his career, we won’t know. However, the bat never caught on. Romero, drafted in the 7th round in 2023 out of Arizona, hit .213/.351/.371 in 125 minor league games.

The Yankees released JT Brubaker. Since they couldn’t trade him, the two options (if no team claimed him) were either an outright assignment to Scranton (something he could have rejected) or release. The Yankees would have saved a little money if he had been claimed, but it wasn’t worth it to them. The Yankees were buying low on Brubaker (they sent Keiner Delgado to Pittsburgh), hoping they could work with him. Injuries ruined his progression. The Yankees also received international bonus pool money in that deal.

I can see Vivas being valuable as a shuttle infielder over the next few seasons. He likely doesn’t have enough to be an everyday contributor for the Yankees, but he has enough where you aren’t afraid to plug him in if someone goes on the injured list for a few weeks.  I don’t envision them cutting him from the 40-man roster, but trade possibilities also exist.

He hasn’t homered recently, but he has six stolen bases in his last six games. His race to 30/30 now shows 29 home runs and 24 stolen bases. He still leads minor league hitters in home runs, but Ryan Ward has closed in (28).

The hitters are more advanced and are making him work.

Matheus earns a hit in his High-A debut. It’s appropriate that it was a double, given he hit 23 in 94 games for Tampa.

I believe he earned the first extra-base hit among 2025 draftees. Troyer is a 23-year-old left-handed bat out of Liberty.

The undrafted free agent out of Georgia hit an amazing .307/.477/.693 in 256 plate appearances against some of the best college talent in the land. He spent only one year at Georgia after transferring from UNC Asheville.

Anyway, after tossing 104 innings of 4.76 ERA ball at this level in his 2024 debut campaign, he has a 2.23 ERA in 101 innings with an 86/40 K/BB this year. His strikeout rate is down a bit from last season, but he has compensated for that with a reduction in his walk rate.

It’s been a journey for the 27-year-old, who was once a top relief prospect before injuries took over his career. He was coveted enough for the Texas Rangers to take him in the Rule 5 draft, even though he was hurt. After spending the entire 2024 campaign on the injured list, they returned him to the Yankees before 2025. Anyway, despite the shoulder injury and the downtime, he was still hitting 95.8 MPH today with his sinker. Crazy.
RHP Jordarlin Mendoza: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Mendoza was promoted from the FCL (season over) today. Already 21, he spent five years in the rookie leagues (two in the DSL, three in the FCL) before getting this chance. Injuries were an issue as he tossed only 104.2 innings in those five years, compiling a 3.44 ERA and 146/59 K/BB. He maxed at 95.4 MPH during this appearance.

By the way, there is a new playoff format in the DSL. Sixteen squads (eight division winners and eight teams with the best records after the division winners are determined) make the tournament, which is called the “DSL Cup.”

The tournament is played World Cup style. The 16 teams are broken down into four pods of four teams each. They will do a round-robin where the team with the best record advances to the semifinals. Both the semifinals and the finals are best-of-three.

You might think 16 teams is a lot. The DSL is a 52-team league, as most franchises have two teams, and unlike other minor leagues, every MLB franchise plays in the same league.

“Wait! 30 x 2 = 60! Which MLB teams don’t have two squads?” The cheapskates are the Twins, Athletics, Nationals, Cardinals, Braves, Angels, Mariners, and White Sox. You are probably shocked by a few of those.

The Bombers currently rank 18th overall and are three games behind the Miami Marlins in their division.
