Before you panic, he was simply piggybacking tonight – he isn’t moving to a bullpen role!  Rodriguez-Cruz is cruising along. Season: 2.70 ERA (60 IP, 37 H, 20 R, 18 ER, 0 HR, 25 BB, 74 K). There is some element of luck involved when you throw 60 innings without allowing a home run, but it is still mightily impressive.

Game 1 (Lost, 4-2)

CF Brian Sanchez: 2-for-4, K

.207/.371/.229 in 229 PA (4 doubles, 0 HR, 19 RBI, 24 R, 4-for-5 SB, 19.2% BB, 21.8% K). A lot of his metrics aren’t far off from what he did in the rookie leagues. His BB% is remarkably consistent. His strikeout rate, as expected, has increased but it isn’t bad (plus, his swinging strike percentage is 6.9%, which is excellent). The ground ball percentage (50% entering today) isn’t ideal and is likely the biggest reason for the .207 batting average. I have been a broken record all season: The Yankees have to keep throwing him out there. It’s all about the reps, reps, reps.

Matheus has three 3+ hit games this season.

We need to see a lot more of this the rest of the season.

Sanchez isn’t known for home run power (5th career HR in 119 games). It’s his ability to compile other types of extra-base hits that allows him to put up solid SLG numbers. This year, he is hitting .291/.364/.450 in 173 PA.
C Engelth Urena: 1-for-4, 2B (8), R, K
SS Juan Matheus: 2-for-3, R, SB (19), 2 CS (7), BB
Matheus puts together a 5-hit day. That’s how you go from .266/.344/.348 to .284/.360/.368. 
RF Tyler Wilson: 3-for-4, RBI, R, SB (16)
Wilson had the walk-off RBI single to increase his hitting streak to nine. Like Matheus, he compiles a 5-hit day. It increased his triple slash from .286/.370/.385 to .303/.385/.399.

Yankees MILB 5/29: Spencer Jones Returns

Notes:

OF Spencer Jones, out since May 3rd due to an “intercostal injury,” returned to the Somerset lineup tonight. He joined Jazz Chisholm Jr., who is in Somerset on a rehab stint.

Unfortunately, when someone comes off the injured list, someone has to go. The Yankees have released OF Grant Richardson. Drafted in the 17th round in 2021 out of Indiana, Richardson struggled between Somerset/Scranton this year, hitting .198/.288/.363 with three homers and a stolen base in 32 games. In 2022 and 2023, he accomplished a double-double in home runs and stolen bases. Last season, he just missed, hitting 9 homers while stealing 16 bases. Hopefully, he finds work elsewhere.

It’s hilarious that this franchise, adamant about moving Chisholm Jr. back to his natural position, may move him to third to accommodate the remnants of DJ LeMahieu. We would be laughing if the Colorado Rockies did something like this.

Yankees MILB 5/18: Rafael Flores Homers Again

Notes:

RHP JT Brubaker started his latest rehab stint in Hudson Valley today. Acquired for infield prospect Keiner Delgado in April 2024, Bruaker hasn’t been able to stay healthy. He tossed only 16.2 innings in the Yankees system last year.

The difference between Brubaker and Scott Effross and Clayton Beeter is that Brubaker is out of options.  Once the rehab is up, and assuming he is healthy, decisions need to be made.

As for Delgado, reading Twitter at the time made one feel as if the Yankees relinquished the next coming of Roberto Alomar. After hitting .231/.318/.347 in Low-A in 2024, he was moved to High-A Greensboro, hitting .252/.329/.394 with a 9-for-9 stolen base rate. Prospects develop at different rates, but it seems doubtful this trade will haunt the Yankees.

He ranks fifth in the Florida State League in batting average.  He is a switch-hitter who has thus far hit lefties well in a small sample (9-for-22). Last year, he was 8-for-40 against southpaws.
