The Yankees were lacking catching depth after the trade deadline. They added to it today by signing Rob Brantly to a minor league contract. The 36-year-old has 140 games of MLB experience (including seven with the Yankees), hitting .226/.286/.323 with seven home runs and 38 RBI. He is the pure definition of a grinder, having played for 12 different organizations, including six at the Major League level.

Brantly will join youngster Omar Martinez in Scranton. Edinson Duran was moved back to the Development List.

Yankees MILB 8/5: Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz Dominates

The Yankees promoted 2024 first-round pick Ben Hess to Somerset. The 22-year-old pitched to a 3.51 ERA and 94/33 K/BB over 66.2 innings for Hudson Valley. The Renegades have three active starters (Kyle Carr, Andrew Landry, and Cade Smith) on their roster. They will figure that out. You don’t stall a prospect’s development because of the void he will leave behind.

2025 draftees Kaeden Kent and Connor McGinnis were assigned to Hudson Valley today. In their debuts tonight, Kent played shortstop while McGinnis played second base.

The Yankees promoted C Engelth Urena to Hudson Valley. To replace him in Tampa, 19-year-old Ediel Rivera was promoted from the FCL. Urena wasn’t having a special year in Tampa (.208/.329/.331). This is likely a situation where they think Urena will start 2026 in Hudson Valley, so they want to give him a taste now.

With all this activity usually comes releases, which is the unfortunate part of the business.  Somerset outfielders Jared Wegner and Cam Eden were both released today.  Wegner, their 9th-round pick in 2023 (Arkansas), was hitting only .168/.262/.242 with two home runs in 47 games this season. Eden, who played in five games for the 2023 Blue Jays, was in his second year with the organization. In 26 games for Somerset, he hit .176/.247/.270. He was 6-for-9 stealing bases.

The Yankees signed RHP Kenta Maeda to a minor league deal. Signing Maeda to a 2-year, $24 million contract didn’t work out well for the Tigers, as he went 3-7 with a 6.21 ERA (5.04 FIP) over 120.1 innings. The Yankees are only on the hook for the prorated league minimum. After trading Carlos Carrasco and choosing to go with Cam Schlittler over Marcus Stroman, their pitching depth took a hit. Maeda will fill that void.

As for the demotion of Jake Bird, that’s how it goes sometimes. A few rough outings + having options + needing to find room for a returning pitcher makes that decision easier than you may think. While disappointing since he was recently acquired, the Yankees also see him as a long-term asset with enough relief depth to make this move now. We’ll see if the Yankees make any changes while he is away. Judging by his 3-game sample with the big club, it already appears as if the pitching gurus are going to ask him to emphasize his slider more. He used that pitch more than 50% of the time after he was acquired. I can’t tell you that Bird will become a worthwhile asset down the line. I can tell you that it’s impossible to know based on only three games.

Somerset, Hudson Valley, and Tampa played the Mets’ affiliates today and went 3-0.

The Yankees acquired OF Cam Eden from the Blue Jays for cash considerations.

“I thought the trade deadline was a hard deadline!”

It is. However, any player who has not appeared on a 40-man roster this season can be traded. Eden was on a 40-man roster in 2023, but not in 2024.

The 26-year-old, who has one career MLB hit, played in 91 games for Toronto’s Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo, hitting .198/.299/.322 in 332 plate appearances with 26 stolen bases in 33 attempts. He plays all three outfield positions.

I see him as a replacement for Brandon Lockridge, who was traded at the deadline. He would be a good candidate for a September call-up under the old rules (pinch running, late defensive replacement, etc.) but I don’t know where he fits in under the new rules.

He also featured a change (34%) and sinker (24%).  Lalane is an intriguing long-term prospect. That’s the best I can offer as I am timid with pitching prospects.

Happy 4th of July!

LHP Henry Lalane made his 2024 debut today. Standing 6’7″, Lalane was born in the Bronx but moved to the Dominican Republic when he was four months old (which is why he was an international signing and not a draftee). What makes him interesting? A kid his size typically has control issues, which showed up in his 2022 debut season. However, last year, he compiled a 34/4 K/BB over 21.2 IP. Don’t expect instant gratification – he has to develop a third pitch to go with his fastball/change combination (for now, the third pitch is a slider) and has yet to make his full-season debut. His talent could be that of a unicorn, but we are years away from knowing what direction he will go in.

News:

The Yankees have released LHP Tanner Tully, who is on his way to Korea.

Tully was signed to a minor league contract this past winter after spending time in the Cleveland organization. Down in Scranton his season, he pitched to a 5.64 ERA in 91 innings with a 77/26 K/BB. He did his job as a Triple-A innings eater and found employment overseas. Good luck to him.

SS Trey Sweeney is on the injured list down in Somerset. While I didn’t see the play, someone informed me that he injured himself stealing a base the other night. In 429 plate appearances this season, he is hitting .250/.366/.419 (119 wRC+) with 13 home runs, 49 RBI, 62 runs, and 16 stolen bases. Let’s hope he can get back before the season ends (September – so plenty of time)
