Yankees MILB: Yankees Acquire Ryan McMahon

The details:
The Yankees acquire 3B Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies for LHP Griffin Herring and RHP Josh Grosz

From the moment Spring Training began, third base was seen as the biggest weakness in the lineup. Oswaldo Cabrera stabilized things somewhat by playing average-ish defense and not-so-average-ish offense (.243/.322/.308; 83 wRC+). His performance wasn’t eye-opening. It was also hidden by hot starts in other sections of the lineup. Aaron Judge, Trent GrishamPaul Goldschmidt, Ben Rice, and Anthony Volpe hit well in April, allowing Cabrera to take over third base with little detriment to the team.

However, once the rest of the lineup started slumping, the hole at third base became that much more glaring. The return of DJ LeMahieu at second base (with Chisholm moving to third) did nothing more than shift the offensive burden while weakening the defense.

It all added up to a team triple slash of .214/.292/.354 (83 wRC+) at third base. The 83 wRC+ ranks 22nd in baseball, which may surprise you. There are two reasons for that: 1. Third basemen around baseball are mediocre; 2. That number is bolstered by Chisholm’s time at the position. He hit .311/.383/.594 (171 wRC+) over 121 plate appearances as a third baseman.

Enter McMahon, a player Colorado has been resistant to trading over the past few years. Known more for his defense than offense, McMahon still represents an upgrade at the plate, hitting .217/.314/.403 (88 wRC+) with 16 home runs and 35 RBI. For those who hate strikeouts, you will need to close your eyes when watching McMahon, who strikes out 31.7% of the time. He likely doesn’t have enough patience or power to be a true “three-outcome” hitter, but that is the type of hitter he is.

McMahon pulls the ball 40.6% of the time and has increased his “Pull Air” metric considerably this season. Typically shaded in blue on Baseball Savant, his 18.8 number this season is in pink. That is intriguing, particularly in light of Yankee Stadium.

Defensively, McMahon is strong. He is +4 in Outs Above Average and +4 in DRS. While he peaked defensively between 2021 and 2023, he is still one of the better defensive third basemen in baseball. His OAA is tied for fourth in baseball. A +5 would place him in second place, behind all-world defender Ke’Bryan Hayes, another rumored target.

While performance is what ultimately matters, it doesn’t hurt that McMahon is durable. He played 150+ games per season between 2021 and 2024. In 2025, he appeared in 100 of Colorado’s 102 games.

His contract isn’t bad. The Yankees won’t be spending much on him at all in 2025 (the prorated portion of $4.1 million), but will need to pay him $15M in both 2026 and 2027. This is important for luxury tax purposes. The Yankees don’t inherit the cheap, team-friendly portion of his deal when it comes to luxury tax calculations. The calculation will instead be based on the money acquired.

The Prospects Given Up:

The name that will jump out first is Herring, owner of a 1.71 ERA, the second-lowest number in all of minor league baseball (Shane Murphy (CWS) owns a 1.69 ERA). His strikeout numbers predictably declined upon his promotion to Hudson Valley from Tampa (33.3% in Low-A; 23.9% in High-A) while his walk rate jumped from 9.2% to 10.9%. Drafted in the 6th round in 2024 (the Yankees gave him a well-over-slot bonus), Herring’s fast ascension has been fun to watch. He was 8th in the Yankees’ system in the recent Pipeline update. For Colorado, he is ranked 5th. Herring throws hard enough to be respected, but his best pitch is his slider.

Meanwhile, Grosz is now placed 18th in the Colorado Rockies’ system. Unlike Herring, Grosz can dial up the fastball, topping out in the 97-98 range while consistently sitting in the 93-95 area. As with Herring, control has been spotty. He owns a 9.7% walk rate, while striking out hitters at a 26% clip. While Herring’s FIP is considerably higher than his ERA, the opposite is true for Grosz (4.14 ERA; 3.38 FIP). He generates a solid number of ground balls (45.5%), and his LOB% (60.2%) suggests some bad luck in his profile. Additionally, he has shown off some bulldog tendencies, reaching 7+ innings four times.

Like many pitchers at this level, questions about whether they are starters or relievers exist. Colorado will certainly keep them in the rotation for as long as possible.

The Bottom Line:

If you are going to hit me with what “Baseball Trade Values” says about this trade, save it for someone else. I am not a big fan of that site as it favors two High-A pitchers over an acquired player that fills a major position of need.

Third base isn’t a strength in the Yankees’ organization, though many third basemen are converted shortstops. While they may need a position for George Lombard Jr. over the next few seasons, that is not something I worry about. Let him develop at his own pace, and everything will fall into place.

The Rockies needed to add pitching into their system, and the Yankees are a good organization to target for that. Both pitchers could make their Double-A debuts this year. The Yankees needed (understatement) a third baseman, and McMahon’s name has come up in the past. This was like high school sweethearts who you thought would get married, didn’t, yet found a way to reconnect in their 30s.

I would label the trade as fair. I don’t think Herring and Grosz had a higher trade value than a player like McMahon, who is imperfect but comes to a team where imperfect is a moderate roster upgrade.

Yankees MILB 7/10: Griffin Herring Dominates

Notes:

If you didn’t enjoy RHP Cam Schlittler‘s MLB debut, it’s time for a new hobby. Like Luis Gil, his ability to overpower hitters stands out.

Is he rough around the edges? Of course. His control and command are a work in progress, and he is still refining his secondary pitches (beyond his MLB-ready slider/sweeper).

However, throwing 98-100 MPH can mask some flaws. He did enough to earn more starts, and it isn’t like the Yankees have many other options until Gil is ready.

Injury Log

Scranton (49-37) (Defeated Buffalo, 11-7)

C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-5, RBI, K
Rodriguez has a 6-game hitting streak.
RF Spencer Jones2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 SB (6)
Jones is unconscious. He is hitting .386 (17-for-44) since his promotion (3 doubles, 5 HR, 11 RBI, 14 R, 6-for-6 SB, 8 BB, 15 K). Those 15 K have come in 54 PA (27.8%, which is a solid number for him). Overall, in 60 games, he has 21 homers, 43 RBI, 56 runs, and 16 stolen bases in 18 attempts.
CF Everson Pereira0-for-1, 2 R, 2 SB (8), 4 BB
Pereira, who set a personal best for walks in a game,  loves to swing but has six walks in his last two games. Go figure.
1B T.J. Rumfield2-for-4, 2B (21), SF, 3 RBI, R
Rumfield is up to .295 thanks to four multi-hit efforts in his last five games (10-for-21 with 10 RBI).

Beck has reached a bump in the road after an incredible start (12.1 IP, 15 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 2 BB, 9 K in last three starts). Beck is up to 72.2 innings between here and Somerset after not pitching at all in 2024 (only 34 innings in 2023). My point is that fatigue/dead arm could be setting in.

RHP Bailey Dees (W, 5-4): 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
As a reliever: 8 games, 2.37 ERA (19 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 19 K). In case you don’t know, Dees was a reliever until the Yankees tried him as a starter in 2024 and the first several weeks in 2025.
RHP Indigo Diaz (S, 2): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (50-32) (Defeated Asheville, 7-2)

RF Coby Morales1-for-5,  RBI, R, SB (14), K
CF Jackson Castillo: 4-for-4, HR (4), RBI, 2 R, 3 SB (17)
Castillo, who earned his first career 4-hit game, is 12-for-28 in July and is up to .250/.345/.346 in 325 PA (13 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR, 40 RBI, 38 R, 17-for-18 SB, 11.7% BB, 20% K). He was hitting .221/.318/.303 after going 0-for-4 on June 27th.
SS Alexander Vargas: 1-for-2, SF, RBI, R, HBP, 2 SB (10)
Vargas has an 18-game on-base streak (at least one hit in 17 of those games).
3B Jose Colmenares0-for-3, SF, RBI, 2 K
1B Josh Moylan0-for-3, BB, K
C Manuel Palencia2-for-4, RBI, R

2B Duncan Pastore2-for-3, R, BB, K

LHP Griffin Herring: (W, 3-1)  7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K
At this level: 2.21 ERA (40.2 IP, 31 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 16 BB, 38 K). Overall, he is up to 85.1 innings with a 96/32 K/BB. In his last outing, he also went 7 innings, giving up one run on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. A trip to Somerset is possible.
RHP Huey Morrill1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Between here and Somerset: 0.55 ERA (32.2 IP, 13 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 11 BB, 23 K).
RHP Bryce Warrecker1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
0.75 ERA (36 IP, 15 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 38 K). If you want me to nitpick, he struck out a lot of hitters in April/May (29 in 21.2 IP) and not so many since (9 in 14.1 innings).

Tampa (45-37) (Defeated Lakeland, 6-5)

DH Edgleen Perez1-for-3, R, 2 BB
Does it ever surprise you how hitters suddenly figure out a level?  Again, the power isn’t there yet – but his approach is amazing and he is starting to earn some hits on top of the walks (63 in 72 games). The minor league leader in walks entering tonight was Ryan Jackson (SD) with 66 in 79 games.
SS Roderick Arias2-for-3, 2B (12), R, 2 BB
Arias is closing in on .200 (.196). He hasn’t cleared that hurdle all season.
C Engelth Urena1-for-4, 2 RBI, R, BB, 2 K
Urena has four 2-RBI games in his last nine games played (zero RBI in the other five games – baseball!)
CF Willy Montero2-for-5, RBI, 2 K
3B Juan Matheus0-for-3, SB (31), 2 BB, K
RF Wilson Rodriguez2-for-5, 2B (1), R, SB (2)
Since promotion: 6-for-21 (1 double, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 6 R, 2-for-2 SB, 4 BB, 1 K).
1B Hans Montero0-for-5, 3 K
LF Marshall Toole: 3-for-5, 2B (12), 3B (10), 2 RBI, R, K
Toole walks it off with an RBI single in the 9th. He is hitting .313/.417/.505 in 235 PA and is on a 9-game hitting streak (14-for-31; 2 doubles, 4 triples, 7 RBI, 7 R, 8 BB). Given the type of player Toole is, I sense he could become a favorite amongst prospect watchers. He is the first Yankees’ prospect to reach double digits in triples since Jorge Mateo hit 11 in 2017.
2B Owen Cobb1-for-4, 2B (7), RBI, K

LHP Xavier Rivas4.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 7 K, 2 HR
Since promotion: 4.11 ERA (30.2 IP, 24 H, 16 R, 14 ER, 4 HR, 19 BB, 38 K).
RHP Gus Hughes2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Chris Veach: (W, 2-1)  2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

FCL (24-24) (Defeated the FCL Tigers, 13-12, in ten innings. The Yankees blew a 12-5 lead in the 9th (yikes), but a win is a win. This game deserves a full boxscore)

SS Dexters Peralta3-for-5, SF, RBI, R, CS (3), K
It’s going to be a tough climb for Peralta, who was hitting .101/.212/.112 at the end of June. He is now hitting .143/.238/.171.
3B Enmanuel Tejeda2-for-2, 2B (2), BB
Tejeda is 4-for-10 on his rehab stint.
   3B Kevin Verde1-for-2, SF, RBI
C Ediel Rivera2-for-4, 3 R, BB
.242/.340/.355 in 147 PA. He had a solid May and a rough June. Thus far, in July, he is 6-for-21 with a pair of doubles.
CF Isael Arias1-for-5, SF, 2 RBI, R, 2 SB (16), 2 K
1B John Cristino: 3-for-5, 2 RBI, R, BB, 2 K
Cristino has three multi-hit efforts in his last four games.
2B Luis Escudero: 0-for-4, SF, RBI, BB, K
Walk-off sacrifice fly.
LF Gabriel Lara0-for-4, R
LF-P Santiago Gomez0-for-1
He didn’t earn a hit, but he did something on the hill!
RF-LF Luis Puello2-for-4, HR (2), RBI, 3 R, K
DH Gabriel Terrero2-for-3, 2B (2), HR (3), 2 RBI, 3 R, SB (7), 2 BB, K
I would characterize this as a busy day!  Terrero (19) is hitting .300/.360/.500 in 89 PA with three homers and 21 runs batted in.
   P-RF Johan Contreras: 0-for-0
Pitcher/RF? This game went off the rails, folks.

RHP Jordarlin Mendoza1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
The 21-year-old was activated off the 60-day injured list today. His last appearance was on June 1, 2024.
RHP Jose M. Rodriguez: 4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 3 K
Entering today, he walked 12 batters in 32.1 innings. Just one of those games, though he kept the damage somewhat limited. His ERA is 1.49 with a 38/18 K/BB over 36.1 innings.
RHP Chance Nolan1.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Alexis Paulino1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K
As you can see, walking batters was a problem today.
LHP Pedro Rodriguez1.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Johan Contreras0.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2 HR
I am not sure why Rodriguez wasn’t left in to get that final out. Contreras is not a pitcher, though he has five career appearances on the hill.
RHP Santiago Gomez (W, 2-0): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
That’s correct – the 21-year-old infielder has two wins this year. Not only did he earn the win, but he kept the ghost runner from scoring!

DSL Yankees (12-16) (Lost to DSL Miami, 6-5, in 11 innings)

SS Mani Cedeno: 0-for-4, HBP, BB, 2 K
.185/.371/.235 in 105 PA.
CF Francisco Vilorio1-for-5, 2B (3), 3 K
2B Carlos Bello1-for-6, R, K
3B Richard Matic1-for-4, 2B (8), HBP, K
Matic is maintaining his 1.000+ OPS (.311/.442/.568 in 95 PA; 8 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 21 R).
C Justin Capellan1-for-3, 2B (9), R, 2 HBP
LF Estivenzon Montero2-for-4, 2B (4), RBI, 2 R, BB, 2 K
Speaking of maintaining a 1.000+ OPS. Montero is hitting .347/.437/.600 in 87 PA (4 doubles, 5 HR, 19 RBI, 12 R). The 18-year-old had a nice debut season in 2024 (.242/.361/.364).
RF Angel Ventura2-for-5, RBI, 3 K

RHP Jhosneyker Colina4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Colina (17) owns a 3.42 ERA in 23.2 IP (17 H, 12 R, 9 ER, 0 HR, 12 BB, 19 K)
RHP Varis Villarreal3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

DSL Bombers (14-14) (Defeated the DSL Marlins, 5-3)

SS Stiven Marinez1-for-2, R, 2 SB (15), BB, K
.280/.467/.347 in 105 PA (3 doubles, 1 triple, 0 HR, 9 RBI, 19 R, 15-for-19 SB, 26 BB, 23 K). If you are asking for a piece of advice (you aren’t): Don’t worry about home run totals in the DSL.  Marinez is playing extremely well.
RF Jose Castro2-for-3, HR (3), 2 RBI, R, SB (4)
Meanwhile, Castro is 19 and in his second tour of this level. Not surprising that he would hit a few long balls.
2B Juan Torres1-for-2, R, SB (8), HBP
LF David Carrera1-for-3, R, SB (9)
1B Remy Veldhuisen1-for-3, 2 RBI, CS (1)

RHP Cesar Acosta4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
RHP Alexis Gonzalez (W, 2-0): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
LHP Kevin Centeno (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
The 19-year-old earns his first career save.

Yankees MILB 7/3: Griffin Herring Continues to Cruise

Notes:

The Yankees have signed veteran infielder Nicky Lopez to a minor league deal. This comes a couple of days after he opted out of his minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Yankees likely offered him more money.

The 30-year-old Lopez played in 18 games for the Angels and Cubs this season, hitting .042/.179/.042 (1-for-24). In 2024, he was a big part of one of the worst teams in history, as he hit .241/.312/.294 in 124 games for the White Sox. Lopez’s main strength is versatility, as he has experience at 2B/SS/3B plus a handful of games at first base and left field. OAA likes him wherever he plays, while DRS isn’t fond of his shortstop play.

By far, his best season was with the 2021 Royals. That year, he produced an amazing 5.5 fWAR (he has 2.5 fWAR in all his other seasons combined), hitting .300/.365/.378 in 565 plate appearances with 22 stolen bases in 23 attempts.

Lopez once added value on the basepaths, but is only 11-for-20 stealing bases from 2023 to 2025.

Bottom line:

Lopez is a left-handed hitting bench piece who doesn’t add much value offensively. Braden Shewmake recently landed on the injured list for Scranton, so he will likely take his place. I assume he has negotiated an opt-out into this contract as well.

Several transactions for the Tampa Tarpons today. OF Wilson Rodriguez and RHP Mariano Salomon were promoted from the FCL, and 2B/OF Austin Green added to the position player logjam by being activated off the injured list. With Owen Cobb‘s activation yesterday, they will need to be creative with the lineup.

Rodriguez, their 17th-round pick in 2023, hit .263/.359/.375 in 93 plate appearances with a pair of homers and 13 RBI. He was also 8-for-10 stealing bases. Salomon (22) pitched to a 2.30 ERA (4.26 FIP) over 31.1 innings (2 starts/9 relief appearances) with 33.9% K, 6.1% BB, and 39.4% GB rates. He pitched well in the DSL in 2023 and 2024.

Despite being listed on “rehab stints,” RHPs Carson Coleman and Kevin Stevens haven’t pitched in a month. It is likely their stints have been stalled.

Hopefully, RHP Clarke Schmidt doesn’t need Tommy John surgery. Even if he doesn’t, forearm strains don’t heal overnight. Who would replace him? It won’t be Luis Gil, who is starting a rehab assignment soon but won’t be ready for weeks (he has an option left, so they can burn it to extend his rehab). I know most will want to see Cam Schlittler, despite his struggles on Wednesday night. Brendan Beck would be a long-shot choice.  Sean Boyle would be a fun story, but stories don’t always equate to MLB success.  Veterans Carlos Carrasco and Allan Winans don’t excite anyone.

Heading into 2025, I had concerns about their depth. Those concerns were elevated when Gerrit Cole went down early in spring training. Now, they might be without Ryan Yarbrough (who was signed for his ability to start if needed) and Schmidt for a while. This is not an ideal situation.

Injury Log

Scranton (44-36) (Lost a heartbreaker to Lehigh Valley, 6-5)

3B Jorbit Vivas1-for-4, BB, 2 K
C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, BB, 2 K
CF Spencer Jones3-for-5, 2B (2), R, K
Spencer is hitting a decent .429 since his promotion (9-for-21; 2 doubles, 3 HR, 3 RBI, 6 R). Given that he has struck out eight times, I will assume that the BABIP gods are loving him right now in this small sample size craziness.
DH Everson Pereira1-for-4, RBI, R, K
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-3, 2 R, BB
2B Jose Rojas: 2-for-4, RBI, R, K
RF Bryan De La Cruz0-for-4
His trip to Toronto was short-lived, as Trent Grisham‘s injury didn’t keep him down for long.
SS Andrew Velazquez: 2-for-4, 2 2B (10), 2 RBI, CS (3), 2 K
LF Duke Ellis1-for-4, SB (8), 2 K
Ellis is 8-for-11 stealing bases for Scranton.

RHP Carlos Carrasco6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Carrasco is in line to be on perfect rest for Schmidt’s next start. Note: I am not advocating for that, but it would be the easy way out.
RHP Baron Stuart: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
This is not Stuart’s Triple-A debut, as he tossed a 7-inning complete game here last season.
RHP Leonardo Pestana: (L, 1-3)  0.2 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
RHP Harrison Cohen0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
It was only to get one out (which wasn’t accomplished), but this is the first time that Cohen has been asked to pitch on back-to-back days in his professional career.

Somerset (39-39) (Lost to Reading, 2-1)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-4, CS (2)
Since promotion: .269/.333/.591 in 102 PA (6 doubles, 8 HR, 21 RBI)
SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-4, 2 K
Since promotion: .203/.330/.308 in 221 PA (7 doubles, 3 triples, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 35 R, 14-for-16 SB, 14.5% BB, 24.4% K). There are some good things there, even if you aren’t enamored with the OPS.
C Rafael Flores1-for-3, 2B (22), BB
.291/.350/.505 in 329 PA (22 doubles, 14 HR, 52 RBI, 44 R, 5-for-5 SB, 8.2% BB, 26.7% K). He owns a 5-game hitting streak (8-for-19; 2 doubles, 2 HR). Eastern League ranks: Batting average: 6th; Hits: 2nd; Doubles: 3rd; HR: 2nd (behind former teammate Spencer Jones!); RBI: 2nd; SLG: 3rd; OPS: 4th.
LF Garrett Martin1-for-4, R
3B Dylan Jasso0-for-4
CF Brendan Jones: 4-for-4, RBI, SB (3)
The wonder of small sample sizes: This one game raised his Double-A triple slash from .190/.256/.304 to .229/.287/.349. There’s some feast/famine in his Double-A profile, as he owns three 3+ hit games since his promotion but also has 12 zero-hit efforts. It’s part of the adjustment for a 23-year-old in his first taste of Double-A.
DH Omar Martinez0-for-4, K
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-2, SB (7), CS (1), BB, K
RF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, 2 K

LHP Brock Selvidge: (L, 1-2)  4.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
As I said the last time he started, they were likely to start amping up his pitch count. Tonight, he tossed 75 pitches. At this level: 3.27 ERA (22 IP, 14 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 20 K). Overall, he is up to 29.2 innings over eight starts.
RHP Danny Watson1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
7.14 ERA (29 IP, 35 H, 23 R, 23 ER, 6 HR, 7 BB, 33 K). Watson’s ERA was still 10.95 on May 18th. Since then: 4.32 ERA (16.2 IP, 18 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 0 BB, 17 K). The walks, or lack thereof, stand out.
RHP Bailey Dees2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
At this level: 4.47 ERA (58.1 IP, 49 H, 30 R, 29 ER, 7 HR, 30 BB, 69 K). After tossing seven shutout innings in a start for Hudson Valley (he was sent down for only one game), he came back as a multi-inning reliever. Stats: 2.93 ERA (15.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 17 K)

Hudson Valley (45-31) (Defeated Brooklyn, 4-1)

DH Jackson Castillo1-for-3, R, BB
.229/.326/.305 in 304 PA (12 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 37 RBI, 32 R, 13-for-13 SB, 11.8% BB, 20.1% K). The power has completely disappeared, which is interesting. He has one extra-base hit (double) in his last 28 games. He had eight extra-base hits in 18 April games.
CF Dillon Lewis1-for-4, 2 K
1B Coby Morales3-for-4, 2B (14), 2 RBI, R
LF Jace Avina2-for-2, SF, RBI, BB
.288/.407/.451 in 194 PA. I like the 14.4% BB rate.
3B Alexander Vargas1-for-4, RBI
Vargas increases his hitting streak to 12.

LHP Griffin Herring: (W, 2-1) 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Since promotion: 2.14 ERA (33.2 IP, 25 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 14 BB, 29 K). Overall: 1.61 ERA (78.1 IP, 49 H, 16 R, 14 ER, 3 HR, 30 BB, 87 K). His ERA continues to lead all qualified minor league pitchers.
RHP Huey Morrill1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
0.33 ERA (27 IP, 11 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 22 K). Including his two games with Somerset: 0.60 ERA (30 IP, 13 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 11 BB, 23 K)
RHP Matt Keating (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
2.49 ERA (25.1 IP, 16 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 27 K).

Tampa (43-33) (Lead Clearwater, 3-2, in the 4th. This game was suspended. They will try to complete it tomorrow)

CF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, R, K
C Engelth Urena1-for-2, 2B (12), K
SS Roderick Arias1-for-2, HR (5), 2 RBI, R
Once this is official, he will have three HR in his last two games.
3B Juan Matheus1-for-2, SB (30)
While not yet official, he will be the first Yankees’ prospect to 30 stolen bases this season.
RF Wilson Rodriguez0-for-2
Rodriguez’s Low-A debut.
LF Austin Green0-for-1, R, BB, K

LHP Xavier Rivas3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, HR

FCL (20-23) (Shut down the FCL Tigers, 2-0, in a rain-shortened five-inning contest. Nobody was credited with an RBI in the game)

CF Willy Montero1-for-2, R
DH Dexters Peralta: 1-for-2, 2B (2), K
C Ediel Rivera0-for-1, R, HBP
3B Luis Escudero1-for-2, SB (10)

RHP Jose Rodriguez (W, 1-3): 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K
Kyle Carr tossed a shutout for Hudson Valley last night. Rodriguez does it in the FCL today. He finally figured out that, if he wants to win, he can’t allow any runs. He is 1-3 despite a 0.84 ERA (32.1 IP, 17 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 12 BB, 35 K)

DSL Yankees (10-13) (Lost a pair of games to the DSL Rangers Red)

Game 1 (Lost, 10-6. This was the conclusion of a suspended game from June 16th. I won’t go into too many details.)

SS Mani Cedeno0-for-5, R, 2 K
C Justin Capellan3-for-4, HR (2), 4 RBI, R
.293/.373/.534 in 67 PA (5 doubles, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 14 R, 7-for-8 SB). Remember that the number in the line score is retrofitted back to when the game started, which is why that shows two home runs while he has three.
1B Jesus Guerrero2-for-3, 2 2B (2), RBI
The 18-year-old earns his first two professional extra-base hits.

RHP Jhosneyker Colina5 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
I bet that first name is easier to pronounce than you think!

Game 2 (Lost, 6-4)

3B Alfred Ciriaco1-for-3
.341/.431/.364 in 51 PA
SS Carlos Bello0-for-3, SF, RBI, 3 K
C Carlos Villarroel1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, R, BB, 2 K
The 18-year-old launches his third career home run. He is hitting .285/.393/.394 in 51 career games at this level.
CF Angel Ventura1-for-3, R, 2 SB (10), BB
Ventura has a 7-game hitting streak (9-for-24). He has stolen eight bases in those seven games.

LHP Marco Manzano3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
2.31 ERA (11.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 16 K)

DSL Bombers (9-12) (Defeated the DSL Mets Blue, 5-4, in a 7-inning game. They were down 4-3 entering the bottom of the 7th)

SS Stiven Marinez1-for-2, R, 2 BB, K
Marinez’s strong start continues. He is hitting .280/.500/.340 in 74 PA (1 double, 1 triple, 0 HR, 6 RBI, 14 R, 9-for-11 SB, 21 BB, 15 K). He has reached base safely in 16 of his 18 games and has at least one walk in nine straight contests.
C Queni Pineda1-for-3, R, BB
CF Ruben Castillo1-for-3, HR (2), 2 RBI, 2 R, K
.239/.329/.463 in 76 PA (3 doubles, 3 triples, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 12 R, 8-for-10 SB). He started his career 2-for-22 but has picked up the pace.
LF Browm Martinez1-for-2, RBI, R, 2 SB (13), 2 BB
Marinez is hitting a cool .400/.507/.636 in 67 PA (4 doubles, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 21 R, 13-for-14 SB, 8.96% BB, 11.9% K). The DSL is crazy, as Martinez is one of seven players hitting .400+ (including a kid (Cristian Arguelles, Rockies) who is 41-for-86 (.477)).
2B Christofer Reyes0-for-1, SF, RBI, SB (14), 2 BB
DH Jose Castro1-for-2, SF, RBI
No, Castillo’s 2-run home run wasn’t the hit that sent everyone home. Rather, it was the back-to-back sacrifice flies by Reyes and Castro.

LHP Junior Tavera4 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
RHP Chaury Gomez1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
The 18-year-old makes his 2025 debut.
LHP Kevin Centeno (W, 1-1): 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, HR
He likely thought the home run in the top of the 7th would doom his squad, but they picked him up. The 19-year-old picks up his first professional win.

Yankees MILB 6/22: Another Strong Effort for Griffin Herring

Notes:

I have concluded that we aren’t receiving accurate roster updates from Hudson Valley. Today, they announced that OF Jace Avina was activated off the injured list. The problem? From what I can find, it was never announced that he was ever on the list.

Keep that in mind while you wonder what the heck happened to RHP Ben Hess (last year’s first-round pick ), who hasn’t pitched since the end of May, and infielder Parks HarberThere is a good chance that both are currently on the injured list. We just haven’t been told about it.

By the way, I am not complaining. They don’t have to tell us anything. But I assume they have to submit the transactions, so perhaps it is milb.com that is missing in action.

What do we know? That RHP Brendan Beck has been promoted to Scranton. RHP Allan Winans, who was promoted to the Yankees to take LHP Ryan Yarbrough‘s spot in the rotation, was scheduled to pitch today. Beck took his place. Is this permanent? Unknown. I don’t think Jesus Rodriguez‘s promotion was supposed to be permanent, but he forced the issue.

Either way, Beck earned this chance by posting a 1.82 ERA (2.54 FIP) over 54.1 innings. He owns a 24.8% K, 5.7% BB, and 37.2% GB.

Injury Log

Scranton (38-34) (Defeated Louisville, 3-2)

3B Jorbit Vivas2-for-4, 2B (8), 2 RBI, SB (8)
.306/.420/.442 in 183 PA (8 doubles, 4 HR, 25 RBI, 28 R, 8-for-13 SB, 13.1% BB, 7.1% K). Vivas had a 20.8% K in his brief MLB tenure.
CF Everson Pereira1-for-3, BB, K
.246/.340/.470 in 212 PA. What do I think of his MLB chances? He has the power to hit home runs at the big league level. I am confident there.  I am skeptical about his swing-and-miss, and there is a fine line between a player who develops into an everyday player vs. someone like Bryan De La Cruz.
DH-1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-4
.278/.366/.474 in 268 PA. As I often say, the Yankees seemingly don’t have faith in his ability to play in the big leagues (and nobody else bit during the Rule 5 draft). However, I expect him to get a shot in MLB.
LF Brennen Davis0-for-1, K
Davis was taken out of the game after a play in left field to close out the third inning.
  PH-LF Ismael Munguia2-for-3, R
He wasn’t expecting to play, but ended up having a good day.
1B CJ Alexander1-for-4
Alexander is 6-for-25 since joining the organization.
  P Zach Messinger0-for-0
RF Bryan De La Cruz1-for-4, RBI, K
C Alex Jackson1-for-4, 2B (6), R, K
Off to a hot start, Jackson has since settled in to be…well, Alex Jackson. He is hitting .237/.310/.468 and is 4-for-43 in June.
2B Braden Shewmake1-for-4, 2B (8), R
SS Andrew Velazquez0-for-3, 2 K

RHP Brendan Beck: (W, 1-0)  6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Well, if this was only supposed to be an emergency start, he did his best to make it a difficult decision to move him back down! One thing today gives us is Savant data! Beck used mostly a 3-pitch mix (4-seamer, slider, curve) with a cutter mixed in. Savant also picked up on one change-up, which may be a misread. His fastball maxed at 93.7 and didn’t generate a whiff. His slider, however, generated five. I don’t think Beck was ever projected as a big strikeout guy, and he could be used as trade bait next month. For now, I am impressed that he has looked so good given how much time he has missed.
LHP Brent Headrick: 1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Zach Messinger: (S, 1) 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Messinger earns his fourth career save.  As a reliever: 2.87 ERA (15.2 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 16 K). Today, he maxed out at 96.5 MPH as he featured mostly his fastball (50%)/slider (48%) combo.

Somerset (35-34) (Knocked off New Hampshire, 12-5, to get above .500)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-5, R, K
Riggio is 18-for-67 with four doubles and six home runs since his promotion. You did know the home run surge would end at some point, right? He has one in his last nine games.
SS George Lombard Jr.2-for-5, RBI, K
Lombard Jr. started June 3-for-21. He is 15-for-53 (.283) since. It seems he is reaching a comfort level, which is what we want to see.
DH Spencer Jones: 2-for-5, HR (15), RBI, 2 R, K
Perhaps he deserved the headline for the third day in a row, but I went for variety. Given that Jones missed so much time, being only four home runs behind the minor league leader is impressive. Last ten games: 17-for-36 (.472; 2 doubles, 5 HR, 11 RBI, 12 R, 2-for-2 SB). He has three straight multi-hit games, and his OPS is an Eastern League-leading .994. His SLG, which also leads the Eastern League, is just a tad below .600 (.59876). Jones is Rule 5 eligible this winter, which only means he will be on the 40-man roster if he isn’t traded.
C Rafael Flores: 2-for-5, 2 2B (18), RBI, 2 R, 3 K
Flores has 32 doubles and 27 home runs in 133 Double-A games.
3B Dylan Jasso: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, R, BB, K
Jasso is hitting .284 with a .844 OPS (10 doubles, 4 triples, 10 HR, 39 RBI, 38 R). He has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games. He has been one of the system’s most consistent bats since Opening Day.
LF Garrett Martin0-for-4, SF, RBI
CF Brendan Jones: 3-for-5, 2 2B (3), HR (1), 3 RBI, 3 R, K
Jones is up to .241 with a .682 OPS since his promotion. This is due to an 11-for-32 (.344) surge over his last eight games.
1B Tyler Hardman: 3-for-5, 2B (13), HR (11), 3 RBI, 2 R
Hardman had two shots at the cycle but couldn’t get that elusive triple. Given he only has five in 371 minor league games, that is hardly a surprise.
RF Cam Eden0-for-3, SB (2), 2 BB, 2 K

RHP Mason Vinyard2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
The “trickle down” effect – they needed Winans in MLB and Beck in Scranton, so someone had to start for Somerset. This was Vinyard’s first start since who knows when, as he was nothing but a reliever in college as well.
RHP Bailey Dees: (W, 3-4)  2.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
RHP Danny Watson2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR
RHP Baron Stuart: (S, 1)  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Stuart’s first professional save.

Hudson Valley (40-27) (Lost to Jersey Shore, 3-1)

LF Jackson Castillo0-for-4
CF Dillon Lewis0-for-4, K
Between here and Tampa: .233/.295/.462 in 275 PA (11 doubles, 4 triples, 13 HR, 41 RBI, 42 R, 15-for-16 SB, 7.6% BB, 26.9% K). He has cut down on the strikeouts in Hudson Valley (23.8%), and his lower batting average (.195) could be attributed to the .204 BABIP.
1B Coby Morales0-for-1, R, SB (11), 3 BB, K
Morales’ stolen bases were a fun storyline last year, though I have dropped it this year. He has 45 stolen bases in 174 games over the past two seasons after going 1-for-3 in 104 collegiate contests.
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-4, 2B (8), RBI, 2 K
3B Josh Moylan0-for-3, SB (5), BB, K
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, 2 K
RF Luis Durango0-for-2, BB
Durango is 12-for-42 (.286/.345/..286) since returning from his rehab stint.
C Tomas Frick0-for-3, 3 K
DH Duncan Pastore0-for-3, K

LHP Griffin Herring5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K
Since his promotion: 0.76 ERA (23.2 IP, 16 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 20 K). Overall: 1.05 ERA (68.1 IP, 40 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 23 BB, 78 K). Herring has the lowest ERA among qualified minor league pitchers at every full-season level (including the FCL and DSL would be foolish).  Can he make it to Somerset this year? That likely wasn’t the plan, but plans often change. I think it was smart not to push him there today, though there was a need. But at some point in the second half?  Sure.
RHP Josh Grosz: (L, 4-5)  3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 5 K
3.55 ERA (63.1 IP, 44 H, 29 R, 25 ER, 3 HR, 27 BB, 73 K). His profile shows a lot of promise, including a solid strikeout rate. Additionally, he has cut down on the home run rate this year. The walks? Still needs some work there.

Tampa (37-31) (Lost to Bradenton, 5-3)

C Edgleen Perez0-for-3, R, BB
.194/.353/.223 in 266 PA (6 doubles, 0 HR, 19 RBI, 29 R, 4-for-5 SB, 18% BB, 21.4% K). I told myself at the beginning of the season not to worry much about his numbers, and I will stick to that…for now.
LF Brian Sanchez2-for-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, R, 2 K
All of Sanchez’s homers have come in the last ten games. He has seven in 128 career games. Baseball!  He is hitting .273/.352/.443 in 210 plate appearances.
SS Roderick Arias1-for-4
.182/.310/.261 in 210 PA (11 doubles, 1 HR, 21 RBI, 25 R, 18-for-23 SB, 15.2% BB, 27.6% K). In a sea of disappointing “stuff” on his profile, the one that strikes me the most is the power. He is showing nothing in that department.
DH Engelth Urena0-for-2, HBP, BB
.212/.344/.342 in 282 PA (9 doubles, 7 HR, 27 RBI, 41 R, 5-for-6 SB, 14.2% BB, 18.4% K). He has eight HBP – ouch.
3B Juan Matheus0-for-3, R, SB (20), BB
Matheus is third (behind Brendan Jones (25) and George Lombard Jr. (24)) in the organization in stolen bases.
RF Hans Montero0-for-4, 3 K
CF Marshall Toole0-for-4, SB (20)
See the note on Juan Matheus
1B Josue Gonzalez1-for-3, HBP, K
2B Santiago Gomez0-for-4

RHP Andrew Landry5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
4.26 ERA (57 IP, 61 H, 34 R, 27 ER, 4 HR, 21 BB, 56 K). June: 4 starts, 2-0, 0.82 ERA, 22 IP, 12 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 19 K. His ERA was 6.43 entering this month.  Landry is trying to be the latest mid-to-late round pick (16th round is now considered “late”) who the Yankees turn into something valuable.
RHP Gus Hughes (L, 4-2): 1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Cade Austin0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
2.96 ERA (27.1 IP, 26 H, 16 R, 9 ER, 3 HR, 11 BB, 30 K).
RHP Jack Sokol1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
3.00 ERA (24 IP, 23 H, 11 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 18 K). He has six straight scoreless appearances.

Yankees MILB 6/14: Griffin Herring Impresses Again

Notes:

Nothing to report for the second day in a row. Sheesh.

Injury Log

Scranton (34-31) (Defeated Syracuse, 5-1. The Railriders are playing great baseball lately, but they are 9.5 games behind first-place Lehigh Valley.)

2B Jorbit Vivas0-for-2, RBI, R, 2 BB
Sometimes, it is hard to report on kids after they make their big league debuts. You look at the numbers (.306/.429/.444) and remain impressed. However, you remember how much he struggled while he was up. If anything, it should be a reminder that numbers are a part of the story and all we have sometimes. But there is more to it than that.
LF Everson Pereira1-for-3, HR (11), 3 RBI, 2 R, BB
.259/.353/.494 in 187 PA. Last year, he hit .265/.346/.512 in 182 PA. He has three doubles and a homer in his last three games.
1B T.J. Rumfield2-for-4, 2B (14), RBI, K
.281/.375/.478 in 240 PA (14 doubles, 1 triple, 8 HR, 38 RBI, 38 R, 4-for-5 SB). Last five games: 6-for-20 with a double, triple, and two home runs.

RHP Colten Brewer (W, 1-1): 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Harrison Cohen1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
We finally get some Savant data on Cohen. He featured three pitches (4-seamer, change, cutter), hitting 94.8 MPH with the 4-seamer. His changeup generated three whiffs on eight swings. His results have been strong in the minors, and he is a step away from helping in the big league bullpen. He is Rule 5 eligible this winter.
RHP Geoff Hartlieb (S, 1): 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Hartlieb dialed it up to 97.6.

Somerset (28-34) (Lost to Portland, 7-2)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-3, CS (1), BB, K

SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-3, HBP, 2 K
CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, HR (12), RBI, R, 2 K
Jones has his OPS over .900 (.905). He has 32 home runs in 179 Double-A games.
C Rafael Flores0-for-4, 3 K
1B Dylan Jasso: 2-for-4, 3B (4), R

RHP Cole Ayers1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
4.32 ERA (16.2 IP, 16 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 11 BB, 14 K). Walks have been an issue since his promotion.
RHP Jordany Ventura1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
RHP Mason Vinyard1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

RHP Luis Pacheco: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Hudson Valley (36-23) (Shut down Greenville, 1-0. That’s back-to-back 1-0 wins. In case you are wondering, Greenville is midpack in team OPS and fourth (out of 12 teams) in runs.)

Since promotion: 0.96 ERA (18.2 IP, 14 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 5 BB, 14 K). Overall: 11 starts, 5-1, 1.14 ERA (63.1 IP, 38 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 21 BB, 72 K). Herring is having one of the best starts in minor league baseball.
RHP Sebastian Keane0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Ocean Gabonia1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Tony Rossi (S, 2): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Between here and Tampa: 21.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 7 BB, 27 K.  In 13 games for Hudson Valley: 13.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 7 BB, 15 K.  He is just motoring along.

Tampa (33-27) (Lost to Clearwater, 14-1. The Tarpons committed four errors in this monstrosity of a game. I don’t even want to write about it)

SS Roderick Arias2-for-4
Back-to-back multi-hit efforts. Hey, it’s something. He’s hitting .171/.311/.260 in 177 PA.
LF Brian Sanchez0-for-4, RBI
C Edgleen Perez0-for-4
DH Engelth Urena2-for-4, K
.212/.349/.325 in 249 PA. He owns solid BB (14.9%) and K (18.1%) rates.
3B Juan Matheus0-for-4, K
RF Tyler Wilson0-for-3
2B Austin Green0-for-3
CF Marshall Toole2-for-3, 2B (8), R
On a bad day, Toole continues his recent good play (12-for-30 (.400) in June with 12 RBI and a 7-for-7 stolen base rate)
1B Hans Montero0-for-3

RHP J.T. Etheridge (L, 2-1): 5.1 IP, 5 H, 8 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 6 K
24 strikeouts in 19.1 innings since his promotion, but he has walked 11.
RHP Sean Hermann0.2 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Jack Sokol2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
3.38 ERA (21.1 IP, 21 H, 11 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 17 K)
RHP Josue Gonzalez1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
Gonzalez, normally a C/1B, is needed for three outs on the hill.

FCL (15-16) (Lost to the Tigers, 7-2)

C Manuel Palencia1-for-4, RBI, K
Palencia was 4-for-29 to start the season. He is 23-for-61 (.377) since.
SS Dexters Peralta1-for-4, R, K
DH Ediel Rivera1-for-4
LF Gabriel Lara1-for-4, 2B (4), SB (2), 3 K
Lara is 10-for-20 (3 doubles, 6 RBI, 4 R) in June.
2B Luis Escudero2-for-4, RBI, CS (3)
1B John Cristino1-for-2, R, BB, K

RHP Mariano Salomon (L, 3-1): 4.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 3 HR
2.45 ERA (22 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 HR, 6 BB, 26 K). He’s 22, so don’t get too crazy – but he has pitched well in rookie ball over the last three seasons (2.87 ERA; 142/25 K/BB over 113 innings)
RHP Justin Lange1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Holding out hope for Lange is foolhardy. But I’m here for it! This was his second rehab appearance.
RHP Chance Nolan: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
The converted QB hasn’t allowed an earned run in nine appearances (8.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 5 BB, 5 K)

DSL Yankees (3-6) (Lost to the DSL Phillies White, 10-1)

SS Mani Cedeno0-for-3, K
Cedeno, likely their most hyped DSL prospect, is off to a 4-for-25 start. I wouldn’t be concerned about that.
DH Francisco Vilorio0-for-3, K
3B Alfred Ciriaco1-for-3, RBI

LHP Luis Rodriguez3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Nice outing for the 20-year-old in his debut season (fourth game)

DSL Bombers (3-6) (Lost to the DSL Rockies, 15-10. This is beautiful – the Rockies scored 15 runs on six hits. 11 walks, a million (give or take a few) hit by pitches, a pair of errors)

CF Ruben Castillo1-for-5, R, 3 K
C Queni Pineda4-for-4, 2 2B (2), 2 RBI, 2 R, BB
After his .254/.434/.438 campaign, he is 10-for-27 this season. I think some may have expected to see him in the FCL to start the season. Whether he will get there before the FCL season ends, who knows?
DH Browm Martinez3-for-4, HR (2), 3 RBI, R, SB (7)
Martinez is off to quite a start: 8-for-20; 2 HR, 8 RBI, 9 R, 7-for-7 SB. Like Pineda, he is only 18. Also like Pineda, he had a solid debut campaign in 2024 (.278/.386/.313 with a 21-for-27 stolen base rate).
3B Leni Done0-for-3, 2 R, SB (2), BB
LF Richard Meran2-for-3, 2B (2), 2 RBI, R, SB (1), BB

RHP Carlos Hampshire3.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Yankees MILB 6/8: Roc Riggio Hits 2 HR

Notes:

The Yankees claimed utilityman CJ Alexander off waivers from the Athletics and assigned him to Scranton. No corresponding 40-man roster move was needed because they had space.

Alexander, who has experience at the “four corners”, is 4-for-25 in his MLB career without an extra-base hit, walk, or stolen base. That’s impressive. He spent time with the Royals in 2024 and the Athletics in 2025. Remember that the next time those teams intersect on the Immaculate Grid.

He will turn 29 years old in July and bats left-handed. During his long minor-league career (528 games), he owns a .254/.320/.461 line with 85 home runs. He was a 20th-round pick by the Atlanta Braves in 2018, so he deserves credit for earning his way to a Major League roster.

Injury Log

Scranton (29-31) (Defeated St. Paul, 7-2)

C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4, BB, K
Rodriguez has tied his walk output from May (23 games in May; 7 games in June). He is hitting .354 with a .898 OPS for Scranton (9 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 21 RBI, 31 R, 9-for-13 SB, 12.3% BB, 12.3% K).
3B Jorbit Vivas0-for-3, R, HBP, BB
DH T.J. Rumfield0-for-3, R, 2 BB
RF Bryan De La Cruz0-for-4, 2 K
1B Jose Rojas1-for-4, 2B (14), 2 RBI, R, K
LF Brennen Davis: 2-for-4, 2B (2), HR (2), 2 RBI, 2 R, K
Davis is now 9-for-19 at this level and has four homers in 13 games between here and Somerset. His combination of prospect status (at one time) and youth (25) separates him from typical minor league signings.
SS Braden Shewmake1-for-3, 2 R, BB
Nobody is going to be more disappointed going home than Shewmake. He finishes the series 8-for-19.
2B Andrew Velazquez1-for-2, RBI, SAC, BB
CF Ismael Munguia1-for-4, SB (15)

RHP JT Brubaker2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
According to Savant, Brubaker generated six swings with his slider, and all resulted in whiffs.  The decision on his future is getting close. His first rehab appearance was on May 18th, and pitchers receive a maximum of 30 days. I believe teams can ask for extensions, but only for arm injuries. Brubaker was placed on the injured list due to left rib fractures.
RHP Zach Messinger: (W, 1-3)  1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
As a reliever: 11.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 BB (2 intentional), 10 K. Today, he hit 96.2 MPH with his fastball. I wish I knew exactly how that compares to his time as a starter, but I don’t remember him throwing *this* hard.
RHP Scott Effross1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Carlos Carrasco2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Geoff Hartlieb1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR

Somerset (25-30) (Lost to Binghamton, 7-4. There is interesting talent in Somerset (especially after the recent promotions). However, it is hardly surprising to see the team struggle as a whole in the first half.)

2B Roc Riggio3-for-4, 2 HR (4), 3 RBI, 2 R
If you were skeptical of the power he was showing in Hudson Valley (6 HR in 20 games), perhaps this surge will convince you otherwise?  Riggio has homered four times in his last three games and has 11 home runs (tied for the organizational lead with Rafael Flores) in 27 games this season. That includes his FCL rehab time, though that was only one homer in two games.  He hit 11 home runs in 128 career games entering 2025.
SS George Lombard Jr.2-for-4, R, SB (8), K
One good reason to leave TwitterX was that people were clamoring for him to make the Opening Day roster. Anyway, today’s multi-hit effort gets his average back to .200.
LF Spencer Jones0-for-4, K
Jones is down to .218 as he is 5-for-29 (.172) with 13 strikeouts since coming off the injured list.
C Rafael Flores1-for-4, 3 K
.283/.342/.498 in 240 plate appearances. After playing 162 High-A games, he has 121 Double-A games. I think he’ll get to Scranton sometime in the second half. They’ll figure out how to distribute the playing time.
CF Brendan Jones1-for-4, RBI
Unlike Riggio, Jones has struggled since the promotion. Nice to see him get an RBI single today.
DH Garrett Martin1-for-4
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-4, SB (3), K
RF Cole Gabrielson0-for-4, 2 K
3B Max Burt: 0-for-3, R, HBP, 2 K

RHP Trent Sellers: (L, 1-3)  2.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
3.98 ERA (43 IP, 28 H, 19 R, 19 ER, 4 HR, 20 BB, 51 K). He has thrown only 43 innings in ten starts.
LHP Ryan Anderson1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Danny Watson1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Luis Pacheco0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Harrison Cohen1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.11 ERA (21.1 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 27 K). This is his 8th consecutive scoreless appearance.
RHP Kelly Austin1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, HR

Hudson Valley (34-22) (Lost to Aberdeen, 4-1)

CF Dillon Lewis0-for-4, K
Lewis is 6-for-30 with a double, triple, and homer since his promotion. His strikeout rate is 16.1% (28.2% for Tampa. We’ll see if he can keep this up as the sample size becomes larger.)
LF Jackson Castillo0-for-4
1B Coby Morales1-for-3, R, BB, K
3B Parks Harber1-for-3, BB, K
Harber has a 6-game hitting streak (9-for-22). He is tied with Rafael Flores for the organizational lead in hits and is second to Jesus Rodriguez in batting average.
DH Omar Martinez0-for-3, BB, K
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-3
2B Brenny Escanio1-for-2, RBI, BB
RF Luis Durango0-for-3, K
Durango is 8-for-28 (.286) with a 5-for-8 stolen base rate at this level. He has zero extra-base hits.
C Tomas Frick0-for-3

LHP Griffin Herring6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Herring with a solid “bend-don’t-break” outing. He generated two double plays and was aided by a strikeout-caught stealing double play.  Since promotion (2 starts): 12 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 6 K.
RHP Hayden Merda: (L, 1-1)  1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR
Merda struck out the side in his first inning, but allowed a home run to lead off his second inning.  He owns a 3.55 ERA and 37/11 K/BB over 25.1 innings.
RHP Bryce Warrecker1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
A rare run allowed by Warrecker (who also allowed an inherited run). His ERA climbs over 1.00 (1.08), the first time it has been there since April 29th.

Tampa (31-25) (Lost to Jupiter, 5-4. They were on the verge of sweeping the 6-game set, but it wasn’t meant to be)

SS Roderick Arias0-for-5, K
.155/.313/.240 in 160 PA.  In the past, his struggles against left-handed pitchers were well-documented, and that continues (3-for-27). However, he is struggling mightily against RHP, and that is a problem (.167/.328/.265).  He wasn’t great against RHP last season (.235/.346/.430), but it was something seemingly to build on.
RF Brian Sanchez0-for-5, 2 K
Sanchez has been so good lately that we will let this one slide.
C Edgleen Perez1-for-3, BB, K
DH Engelth Urena0-for-3, R, BB, K
The minors are for development over winning games (notice that I don’t say that winning is unimportant!). Incredibly, the Tarpons have played so well lately despite the struggles of Arias, Perez, and Urena at the top of the lineup.
3B Juan Matheus1-for-3, 3B (1), 2 R, SB (17), BB, K
LF Tyler Wilson2-for-3, RBI, R, SB (15), BB
Wilson has hit safely in all six June games (11-for-21).
2B Owen Cobb1-for-2, SF, RBI, BB, K
CF Marshall Toole1-for-4, 2 RBI, K
One of the reasons why they have played so well is their group of “unheralded” prospects that includes Matheus (.272/.351/.356; 17-for-22 SB), Wilson (.287/.372/.383; 29 runs; 15-for-20 SB), Cobb (.366/.415/.598; 11-for-13 SB), and Toole (.316/.426/.513; 7 doubles, 5 triples, 2 HR, 30 runs; 16-for-17 SB).
1B Josue Gonzalez1-for-3, 2B (6), K
   PH Hans Montero0-for-1, K

LHP Ben Shields2.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
The rehab stint continues.  He threw 49 pitches (57% sliders; 43% sinkers). He touched 94.5 MPH with the sinker.
RHP Chris Veach1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
1.21 ERA (22.1 IP, 15 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 12 BB, 35 K). There’s only so much room on pitching staffs, but Veach’s changeup deserves a shot in Hudson Valley.
RHP Jack Sokol2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Unlike Veach, Sokol features a “harder” changeup that reached 88.1 MPH today. He owns a 3.72 ERA (19.1 IP, 19 H, 11 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 9 BB, 16 K)
RHP Brady Kirtner1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
LHP Tanner Bauman: (L, 2-5)  1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K

Yankees MILB 6/1: Cam Schlittler Tosses 5 Shutout Innings

Notes:

RHP Jake Woodford triggered his May 31st opt-out and is now a free agent. Most veteran players include various opt-out clauses in their spring training and minor league deals. The opt-outs are a way to force the MLB team to either add them to the 26-man roster or let them go. On occasion, the player may renegotiate their minor league deal for a higher salary.

A veteran of five seasons with the Cardinals, White Sox, and Pirates, Woodford pitched to a 4.54 ERA (5.09 FIP) over 39.2 innings for Scranton. He owned a 9.4% BB, 21.5% K, and 42.4% GB.

With Woodford likely gone, the Yankees’ veteran minor league pitching depth (with MLB experience) consists of Allan Winans, Anthony DeSclafani, and Brandon LeibrandtCarlos Carrasco was called up to the big club today as an extra arm and will need to go through the DFA process again.

After a hot May, 1B/OF Dominic Smith also exercised his opt-out clause. Given how the season has played out, there wasn’t a path to MLB for Smith.

Injury Log

Scranton (25-29) (Lost to Worcester, 7-4)

C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-2, 2B (7), R, 2 BB, K
.362/.443/.461 in 167 PA. I will reiterate what I have been saying all year: If there were any plans on deploying Rodriguez at 3B in MLB, they would be playing him there more often than they are. It’s not coming soon. With Chisholm Jr. almost back and the insistence that DJ LeMahieu has something to offer, there isn’t room anyway.
LF Everson Pereira1-for-3, R, CS (1), BB, 2 K
.275/.380/.517 in 142 PA.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-3, SF, RBI, K
RF Bryan De La Cruz3-for-4, HR (3), 3 RBI, R, K
For De La Cruz to have any value, he has to hit home runs. It’s what he does. He has three in 22 games since joining Scranton.
2B Braden Shewmake0-for-4, K
DH Ronaldo Hernandez0-for-3, SB (1), BB, K
CF Ismael Munguia0-for-4
SS Andrew Velazquez0-for-3, SB (14), BB, K
3B Jake Gatewood: 0-for-2, R, HBP, K

RHP Sean Boyle5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
4.72 ERA (55.1 IP, 47 H, 33 R, 29 ER, 8 HR, 20 BB, 57 K). The Yankees could have summoned Boyle to Los Angeles instead of Carrasco, but it isn’t surprising they went with the disposable veteran over their minor league depth.
RHP Eric Reyzelman0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
I don’t know if it was strategy or not, but taking Reyzelman out of the game after recording a strikeout (and stranding a runner) wasn’t a bad idea. Let him build some confidence.
RHP Scott Effross: (L, 0-1)  1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
Effross has allowed eight runs in three innings since moving to Scranton. It is possible that his injuries won’t be overcome, which would be a sad outcome. I would argue we aren’t there yet.
RHP Leonardo Pestana0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Geoff Hartlieb1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Somerset (24-26) (Defeated Akron, 3-0)

DH Jazz Chisholm Jr.0-for-3, K
The Yankees have yet to let him play a full game in the field. I believe that’s coming, and he will be activated soon.
   DH Max Burt0-for-1
SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-2, R, CS (2), 2 BB, 2 K
Lombard Jr. continues to try to find his stroke. The good news is that the walks keep coming (20 in 23 games). Today is the last day we can call him a teenage prospect. Happy 20th Birthday tomorrow, George!
CF Spencer Jones1-for-3, R, 2 K
.240/.382/.550 in 123 PA (4 doubles, 9 HR, 17 RBI, 24 R, 7-for-9 SB, 17.9% BB, 36.6% K).
   CF Cole Gabrielson0-for-0, BB
C Rafael Flores1-for-4, HR (11), 3 RBI, R, K
Flores’s 3-run homer in the first was all the scoring they needed. He leads the Eastern League in homers and is tied for second in RBI (37).
3B Dylan Jasso0-for-3, HBP, K
.274/.335/.469 in 191 PA. Jasso hit .260/.311/.385 in May after a .303/.369/.592 April.
RF Brennen Davis1-for-3, BB
Davis is 6-for-26 with a pair of homers, eight walks, and nine strikeouts.
LF Garrett Martin1-for-3, 2B (9), BB
.231/.339/.442 in 184 PA. 17 of his 36 hits have gone for extra bases (9 doubles, 8 HR). Over his career, 55 of his 111 hits have gone for extra bases.
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-3, 2 K
2B Alexander Vargas1-for-3

RHP Cam Schlittler (W, 4-5): 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K
2.38 ERA (53 IP, 47 H, 19 R, 14 ER, 1 HR, 17 BB, 64 K). Schlittler has been among the best pitchers in the Eastern League. He entered today as the league leader in FIP and is in the top five in strikeouts and K-BB%. The only bad thing in his profile is something that is hard for him to control: An elevated BABIP (.357 after today’s game).
RHP Danny Watson1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Indigo Diaz1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Harrison Cohen1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
2.41 ERA (18.2 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 26 K)
RHP Kelly Austin (S, 3): 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
1.69 ERA (16 IP, 13 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 16 K)
Trying to figure out which relief prospects are legitimate is a tough exercise. We’ve seen pitchers like Brooks Kriske dominate in the minors, only to struggle once in MLB. By the way, in case you are wondering, Kriske is still out there. He recently tossed two scoreless innings for the Cubs but has since been designated for assignment.

Hudson Valley (31-19) (Defeated Wilmington, 2-1, in ten innings)

2B Roc Riggio: 1-for-4, BB, 3 K
CF Brendan Jones: 0-for-2, 2 SB (23), CS (4), 3 BB, K
Jones is 41-for-45 (91.1%) stealing bases in 68 minor league games. He was 70-for-77 (90.9%) in college.
LF Jace Avina1-for-3, RBI, 2B (13), 2 BB
Avina’s walked it off with a … walk. He has 13 doubles in 40 games (8 doubles in 17 May games).
1B Coby Morales1-for-4, K
3B Parks Harber0-for-4, K
DH Omar Martinez1-for-4, 2 K
Martinez slowed down after an insane hot stretch but still finished May at .293/.424/.533 with five home runs.
SS Jose Colmenares: 1-for-3, 3B (1), R, BB
Colmenares tripled with one out in the 9th. He scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
C Tomas Frick0-for-3, BB, K
RF Anthony Hall0-for-4, 3 K
  PR Luis Durango0-for-0, R

LHP Griffin Herring6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Herring is dominant in his High-A debut. He has my full attention.
RHP Hayden Merda1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Tony Rossi1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Between here and Tampa: 17.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 24 K. Impressive.
RHP Bryce Warrecker1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
0.79 ERA (22.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 5 BB, 29 K). Pure dominance. This is the first time he didn’t strike out a batter in his professional career (33rd game).
RHP Huey Morrill (W, 3-1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Tampa (26-23) (Lost a heartbreaker to Fort Myers, 3-2. They had a 2-1 lead entering the 9th)

SS Roderick Arias0-for-4, R, BB, K
CF Brian Sanchez2-for-4, SF, RBI, SB (11), K
Sanchez has seven multi-hit efforts in his last nine games. He is hitting .286/.341/.445 in 132 PA (4 doubles, 20 RBI, 10 R, 11-for-14 SB).
C Edgleen Perez0-for-4, K
DH Engelth Urena1-for-3, HBP, K
.212/.346/.341 in 208 PA. Urena has shown flashes of the power he is known for, but it hasn’t been consistent. Not surprising for a 20-year-old playing in Low-A.
LF Cam Eden1-for-3, BB
RF Dillon Lewis2-for-4, R, 2 K
The raking continues. He is hitting .250/.323/.477 in 195 PA (9 doubles, 2 triples, 9 HR, 29 RBI, 33 R, 13-for-14 SB, 9.2% BB, 28.2% K).
3B Juan Matheus0-for-4, 2 K
2B Austin Green0-for-4, K
1B Hans Montero2-for-4, RBI

LHP Xavier Rivas4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Rivas’s Low-A debut (he tossed 15.2 innings in the FCL before his promotion). The 22-year-old was another SEC draft pick last year, nabbed in the 16th round out of Ole Miss. There is no StatCast data available today, so the information is limited. He generated 9 whiffs and hit the low 90s with his 4-seam fastball and sinker. His arsenal also includes a changeup and slider.
RHP Kevin Stevens1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Stevens’ rehab assignment was moved here from the FCL.
RHP Carson Coleman1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
This is Coleman’s fourth rehab appearance. It likely won’t be long before he is in Scranton’s bullpen. Perhaps Somerset.
RHP Sean Hermann1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Chris Veach1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
1.35 ERA (20 IP, 15 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 12 BB, 32 K). Veach hasn’t allowed a run since April 27th. He has ten straight scoreless appearances (10.2 IP).
RHP Brady Kirtner (L, 2-2): 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
Kirtner has been strong in his debut season. Today wasn’t his day. Season: 2.67 ERA (27 IP, 16 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 13 BB, 31 K)

FCL (9-11)

Day off. They have a doubleheader scheduled against the Phillies tomorrow.

DSL Yankees (0-0)

Their season begins on Monday.

DSL Bombers (0-0)

Their season begins on Monday.

My coverage of the DSL is even lighter than my FCL coverage. I will probably write a report tomorrow since it is Opening Day.

Yankees MILB 5/22: Griffin Herring Dazzles (6 IP, 0 H, 10 K)

Notes:

Cooper Hummel has exercised an opt-out clause in his contract and will become a free agent if the Yankees don’t add him to their 26-man roster. I find that unlikely, as his MLB career (.159/.255/.275 in 82 games) hardly inspires confidence. Furthermore, he is primarily an outfielder, which the Yankees don’t need.

I wouldn’t cry if he replaced Pablo Reyes, but that bar is hardly high.

Injury Log

Scranton (21-25) (Lost to Nashville, 7-6, in 11 innings. I just noticed that former Yankees’ prospect Anthony Seigler plays for Nashville. He is hitting .282 with a .946 OPS in 150 plate appearances. The first-round pick in the 2018 draft reached minor league free agency last winter and signed with the Brewers.)

3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-6, R, SB (7), K
Not his best effort during the streak, but Rodriguez’s hitting streak reaches 12. He has 25 hits in 16 May games.
LF Dominic Smith1-for-6, R, K
C Alex Jackson2-for-4, 2 HR (8), 2 RBI, 2 R, SB (1), BB
The alternating home run streak continues!  Jackson has homered in five of his last nine games (HR, no HR, HR, no HR, HR, no HR, HR, no HR, 2 HR).
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-3, SF, RBI, K
   2B Braden Shewmake0-for-1, SB (4)
RF Bryan De La Cruz1-for-4, RBI, BB, K
DH Jose Rojas1-for-4, R, SB (3), BB
SS Andrew Velazquez1-for-5, R, SB (11), 2 K
2B-1B Jake Gatewood0-for-3, SAC, BB, 2 K
One thing Gatewood has done well in his minor league career is hit home runs. This season, he has only two in 33 games.
CF Ismael Munguia1-for-5, 2B (5), 2 RBI, 2 K

RHP Erick Leal: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Eric Reyzelman2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
4.26 ERA (19 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 21 BB, 20 K). He may be hard to hit (38 hits/98 strikeouts in 69.1 career innings), but those darn walks (47).
RHP Scott Effross0.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
If I didn’t mention it, Effross is no longer on a rehab stint. The Yankees officially optioned him to Scranton.
RHP Zach Messinger: (L, 0-3) 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Back-to-back relief outings for Messinger. He hit 95 MPH with his 4-seam fastball. A story to watch if this is a permanent move, though he was given a starter’s workload here.

Somerset (19-21)

Their game against New Hampshire was postponed. They will attempt to make it up on Saturday.

Hudson Valley (27-14) (Trounced Winston-Salem, 13-2)

2B Roc Riggio2-for-4, HR (5), 2 RBI, 3 R, HBP, BB, K
Riggio is scorching (.295/.456/.750; 3 doubles, 1 triple, 5 HR, 14 RBI, 14 R in 12 games). He has homered in back-to-back games and has four home runs in his last four games.
CF Brendan Jones0-for-4, 2 R, 2 BB, K
RF Coby Morales4-for-5, 2 2B (7), HR (4), 3 RBI, 3 R, BB, K
Morales earns his first career 4-hit effort. He went 3-for-19 in his brief Somerset stay. If he continues to rake here, he’ll get a longer stay.
1B Parks Harber: 3-for-6, 2 2B (5), 2 RBI, 2 R, K
Since promotion: .338/.390/.563 in 77 PA with three 3+ hit efforts. As an undrafted college bat, you won’t see Harber high on any organizational prospect lists. Nobody will care if he keeps raking as he moves up the chain.
DH Omar Martinez1-for-4, RBI, BB, K
LF Jackson Castillo2-for-5, 2 2B (11), 2 RBI, R
Castillo continues a recent surge, collecting multiple hits for the third time in his last five games. That has increased his triple slash from .216/.328/336 to .235/.334/.360. As you know, as sample sizes get larger, brief surges don’t increase your numbers significantly.
SS Jose Colmenares0-for-3, R, SB (5), 2 BB, K
3B Josh Moylan1-for-4, RBI, HBP, K
C Tomas Frick0-for-2, R, HBP, 2 BB, K

RHP Ben Hess (W, 4-2): 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 7 K
3.28 ERA (35.2 IP, 20 H, 16 R, 13 ER, 1 HR, 20 BB, 52 K). I love the strikeouts. The walk rate needs work. That is why they have the minor leagues.
RHP Ocean Gabonia1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Huey Morrill1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Bryce Warrecker1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
0.50 ERA (18 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 3 BB, 24 K). If the plan is to keep him in the bullpen permanently, a trip to Somerset may not be far off.

Tampa (22-20) (Their hot streak continues, courtesy of a 3-1 win over Dunedin. Dunedin entered this series as one of the top dogs in the division. They are now in second place. Tampa is in 4th place, but only 2.5 games behind first-place Lakeland.)

DH Edgleen Perez0-for-3, 2 BB
.225/.391/.258 in 156 PA. Perez has 31 walks (19.9%).
C Engelth Urena0-for-4, BB
RF Dillon Lewis1-for-4, HR (6), RBI, R, 3 K
.219/.296/.425 in 162 PA (8 doubles, 2 triples, 6 HR, 20 RBI, 25 R, 9-for-10 SB, 9.3% BB, 29% K). His power/speed combination is enticing, and he has hit better overall in May (.279/.355/.618 with five homers and 17 RBI)
SS Juan Matheus0-for-2, R, SB (12), 2 BB
The hitting streak is over, but he still contributed. He is hitting .302/.369/.373 in 149 PA. Scouting reports are scarce, but Fangraphs ranked him 26th in the organization, touting his versatility (shortstop should remain part of that profile) and bat-to-ball skills. Power? Not likely to be one of his strengths.
LF Tyler Wilson1-for-3, RBI, BB, K
3B Hans Montero0-for-4, 2 K
2B Owen Cobb: 0-for-4, 2 K
His hitting streak comes to an end. He is hitting .417/.455/.733 in 67 PA while playing 2B/SS/3B.
CF Marshall Toole2-for-4, 3B (4), R
.305/.400/.453 in 110 PA.
1B Josue Gonzalez2-for-4, K

LHP Griffin Herring (W, 4-1): 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 10 K
I said earlier this week that Bryce Cunningham has been the most impressive 2024 draftee. Given the level difference, I still believe that, but Herring has made a case. He owns a 1.21 ERA in 44.2 IP (24 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 16 BB, 58 K). He leads the Florida State League in strikeouts and batting average against (second in ERA and WHIP).
RHP Jackson Fristoe2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Chris Veach (S, 3): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
1.59 ERA (17 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 29 K)

FCL (6-8) (Lost to the Tigers, 6-4)

LF Brando Mayea0-for-4
CF Cam Eden0-for-3, SF, RBI
RF Wilson Rodriguez1-for-2, 2 SB (2), BB
The left-handed hitting outfielder (20) was drafted out of high school in the 17th round in 2023. This was only his 25th career game.
3B Santiago Gomez1-for-3, SB (3), BB, K
.297/.325/.297 in 40 plate appearances.
2B Luis Escudero1-for-3, 2 R, BB, K

RHP Stanly Alcantara4.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Alcantara has allowed five walks in ten innings. Before this season, he walked 56 in 38.1 innings. Progress!

Their season starts in June.

Yankees MILB 5/8: Ben Hess Dominates

Notes:

OF Brennen Davis started his rehab stint in the FCL today. Once a top prospect for the Cubs (Baseball America ranked him 16th in 2022, and he played in the 2021 Futures Game), injuries have slowed him down. In 2021, as a 21-year-old trying Double-A for the first time, he hit an impressive .252/.367/.474 (134 wRC+) in 76 games with 13 homers and 36 RBI.

Injuries are a part of the game, and Davis can’t shake the bug. The Yankees signed him, hoping to tap into what he once was. Last season, in Triple-A Iowa, he hit .214/.359/.469 (110 wRC+) in 181 plate appearances with 11 home runs.

When his rehab is over, he’ll join Everson Pereira and Bryan De La Cruz as right-handed hitting outfield depth.

RHP Jon Olsen was signed to a minor league contract and assigned to Somerset. The 27-year-old was a 12th-round pick by the Twins in 2018, but was out of the organization in 2022. After not pitching in 2023, he ended up in the Independent Atlantic League in 2024, where he compiled a 12-3 record with a 3.60 ERA in 127.2 IP for York. This season, he pitched in the Mexican League, where he was 2-1 with a 3.18 ERA in three starts (17 IP) with a 19/6 K/BB. For now, he is organizational depth. We’ll monitor his progress.

RHP Carlos Carrasco cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Scranton. I have no problem with that, as they need the pitching depth.

Due to some feedback, I have updated the injury log below. It is now sorted by last name, with the Top 30 organizational prospects listed at the top.

Injury Log

Scranton (17-17) (After waiting for 3+ hours, they postponed this game against Rochester due to rain. Weird that they waited so long. The lineup was provided and is below.)

CF Everson Pereira0-for-0
2B DJ LeMahieu0-for-0
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-0
C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-0
RF Bryan De La Cruz0-for-0

3B Jose Rojas0-for-0
DH Alex Jackson0-for-0
SS Braden Shewmake0-for-0

RHP Zach McAllister0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Until the Yankees find starters, McAllister can put himself on the map for spot starts. However, he hasn’t pitched well thus far.

Somerset (12-18) (Lost to Akron, 5-0. Somerset has suffered three straight shutouts since George Lombard Jr.‘s promotion. The kid is going to develop a complex)

3B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, K
2B George Lombard Jr.0-for-4, K
1-for-11 with a walk and three strikeouts. This is his second start at second base this season (24 at SS; 1 at 3B)
1B Rafael Flores1-for-4, K
Flores hasn’t drawn a walk in seven May games (9 in 23 April games)
DH Tyler Hardman0-for-4, 2 K
CF Garrett Martin1-for-4, 2 K
.195/.340/.402 in 100 PA. Martin has a .200 BABIP, which should normalize.
LF Jared Wegner1-for-4, K
RF Christopher Familia0-for-3, BB
With Spencer Jones and Cole Gabrielson on the injured list, Familia should see extended playing time.
C Antonio Gomez0-for-3, K
SS Max Burt: 1-for-2, BB

RHP Brendan Beck: (L, 2-1) 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 K (personal best)
2.28 ERA (23.2 IP, 15 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 26 K). The start to Beck’s season is encouraging.
LHP Will Brian1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Brian allowed two of Beck’s runners to score before tossing a clean 6th inning. Since promotion: 9 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K
RHP Luis Pacheco1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Kelly Austin1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
9.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K. If you want to get yourself on the radar, throw up a bunch of zeroes in your first eight Double-A games.

Hudson Valley (20-9) (Walloped Wilmington, 12-1. It’s their second straight 12-1 triumph)

CF Brendan Jones: 2-for-6, RBI, R, SB (13)
Jones is 31-for-34 (91.2%) stealing bases in 49 career games.
LF Jackson Castillo: 2-for-5, 2B (8), 2 R, SB (4), BB
.255/.366/.372 in 112 PA. He has back-to-back multi-hit efforts after a 1-for-15 start to May.
3B Parks Harber: 2-for-5, RBI, 3 R, BB, K
Harber is hitting .314 (11-for-35) since his promotion (he has hit safely in seven of eight games).
DH Omar Martinez: 2-for-4, 2 HR (5), 3 RBI, 2 R, HBP, BB, K
Martinez has homered in three straight games. In six May games: 12-for-23 (3 doubles, 4 HR, 10 RBI, 9 R, 4 BB, 4 K).  He is up to .283/.374/.485 in 115 PA. I would consider swapping him and Antonio Gomez.
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-5, BB, 2 K
SS Brenny Escanio2-for-5, 2B (3), RBI, 2 R, BB, 2 K
1B Josh Moylan0-for-3, SF, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K
C Tomas Frick1-for-3, 2B (4), RBI, R, 2 BB, K
RF Anthony Hall2-for-5, 2 RBI, K

RHP Ben Hess: (W, 2-2)  6.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K
Hess has three 9-strikeout efforts this season. He lost the no-hitter with no outs in the 7th, but instantly generated a ground ball double play before leaving. He tossed 88 pitches (63 strikes). Season: 3.24 ERA (25 IP, 12 H, 12 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 39 K). The spotlight will be brighter on Hess, since he was their first-round pick in 2024. He is performing well.
RHP Huey Morrill1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Tony Rossi1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Since promotion: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K. Overall: 11.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 18 K. That’s how you make an impression in your first professional campaign.

Tampa (13-17) (Swept a doubleheader against Daytona)

Game 1 (Won, 13-2. 13 runs, 11 hits, 10 walks)

C Edgleen Perez2-for-5, RBI
Perez hits the .200 mark for the first time since April 6th.

DH Engelth Urena1-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB, K

RF Tyler Wilson1-for-3, 2 RBI, R, BB
2B Austin Green0-for-2, RBI, R, 2 BB

.240/.356/.328 in 59 PA.

LHP Griffin Herring4.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
1.04 ERA (34.2 IP, 20 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 44 K). The Max Fried of the Florida State League (it’s a joke, don’t take it seriously) allows more than one run for the first time in his 6-start career.
RHP Brady Kirtner (W, 2-0): 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
1.56 ERA (17.1 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 14 K)
RHP Chris Veach1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
2.13 ERA (12.2 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 20 K)

Game 2 (Won, 6-3)

DH Edgleen Perez: 2-for-4, RBI, HBP, K
I love that they keep throwing him out there, even if he caught the first game of a doubleheader. He needs reps, reps, reps.  His batting average is now .214.
RF Brian Sanchez: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, R, BB
Sanchez is having himself a doubleheader (4-for-8, 3B, 3 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB). He has three straight multi-hit efforts.
C Engelth Urena: 1-for-2, R, 2 BB
Drawing walks is nothing new for Urena (49 in 322 career plate appearances; 15.2%)
LF Dillon Lewis1-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, R, 2 K
Lewis has two doubles and two homers in six May games (five extra-base hits in 21 April games)
3B Juan Matheus0-for-2, SF, RBI, BB, K
1B Tyler Wilson0-for-4, 2 K
2B Austin Green0-for-3, R, BB, K
CF Marshall Toole: 2-for-4, 2B (2), 3B (2), 2 K
Toole’s third straight 2-hit effort (6-for-11, 1 double, 2 triples).
SS Owen Cobb: 2-for-3, 2B (4), 2 R, CS (1), BB
9-for-18 with four doubles, a homer, 10 runs, and a 6-for-7 stolen base rate.

RHP Danny Flatt: (W, 1-2)  5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K
The rain delay (which occurred in the second inning) wasn’t long enough to knock Flatt out of the game, which worked well for him. Nobody wants a wasted start.  Season: 5.40 ERA (18.1 IP, 19 H, 12 R, 11 ER, 2 HR, 13 BB, 15 K)
RHP Jack Sokol: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
4.22 ERA (10.2 IP, 13 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 10 K)
RHP Cade Austin (S, 1): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

FCL (3-1) (Defeated the Phillies, 3-1. I told you they keep playing the same teams!)

DH Brando Mayea1-for-4, 2B (3), RBI, R, SB (2), CS (2), BB, K
Mayea has three doubles in four games (4 extra-base hits (2 doubles, 2 triples) in 35 games at this level in 2024). I don’t worry about stolen base rates in the low minors – if a kid has speed, they learn by running.
CF Isael Arias2-for-5, RBI, SB (2)

RF Brennen Davis1-for-2, K
His first rehab game.
  RF Gabriel Lara1-for-2, CS (1)
