My Take: Yankees Acquire Austin Slater

The details:

The Yankees acquire OF Austin Slater from the Chicago White Sox for RHP Gage Ziehl

The Yankees have several objectives at the deadline. Improving the lineup was somewhere on that list, especially at third base. However, Brian Cashman wanted to do more than that: namely, improve the offense against left-handed pitching.

The first move was acquiring Amed Rosario, who instantly earned a hit against a left-handed reliever. Today, they acquired Austin Slater, who (like Rosario) is a rental.

Slater is one of those players who surprises you when you look at their Baseball Reference page. “How has this dude put together a 9-year, 685-game career?”  I have never used him in the Immaculate Grid, but this will be his fifth franchise in those nine years. He spent 2017 – June 2024 with the Giants, before being sent to the Reds last July. The Reds then sent him to the Orioles at the deadline. In the off-season, he signed a 1-year deal with the White Sox.

In 51 games with the White Sox this season, he hit .236/.299/.423 (99 OPS+) with five home runs over 135 plate appearances.

The overall numbers aren’t what attracted him to the Yankees. Against LHP, he is hitting .261/.338/.522 in 77 plate appearances. All five of his homers have come against southpaws. This isn’t a fluke, as his career mark is .270/.362/.436 with 30 home runs in 1,006 plate appearances.

Slater doesn’t offer much on the basepaths. Once an efficient basestealer (43-for-47 between 2017 and 2022), he is only 6-for-10 since.

Defensively, he doesn’t kill you. He has been worth +3 OAA in his career. This season, his expected catch percentage is 93% and his actual catch percentage is 94%. Slater can cover all three outfield positions, and even played an inning at first base this year (204 career innings).

What the Yankees Gave Up:

Gage Ziehl was their 4th-round pick in the 2024 draft, signing for an overslot $637,000. Pitching at three levels this year (mostly Tampa with cameos for Hudson Valley and Somerset), he went 5-4 with a 4.15 ERA (3.62 FIP) in 82.1 innings. He owned an impressive 4% walk rate (20.2% K) while generating a 49.6% ground ball rate.

Ranked #14 in the White Sox system by Pipeline after the deal, he owns a fastball/slider/change mix. With his ability to pound the zone and generate some ground balls, the White Sox could have a cheap innings-eater type on their hands in a few years. That is likely as high as his ceiling can get. For a rebuilding team trading a rental piece, it’s a smart trade. It’s similar to when they shipped RHP Keynan Middleton to the Yankees for Juan Carela in 2023.

Bottom Line:

The Yankees are doing what they love to do: Trading pitching prospects to acquire MLB assets. They have traded two 2024 draftees (Ziehl, Griffin Herringover the past week.

This trade is fine. It shouldn’t excite you. It shouldn’t terrify you. Like with Rosario, it is up to Aaron Boone to use a platoon-advantage player optimally.

Yankees MILB 7/26: 3 Hits for George Lombard Jr.

Notes:

In case you missed it, here is my article on the Ryan McMahon transaction.

As stated yesterday, Hudson Valley has lost a lot of pitching lately. Today, RHP Gage Ziehl was moved up from Tampa. He made his debut during the game. Earlier in the season, he made an emergency start for Somerset. Ziehl was their 4th-round pick in the 2024 draft out of Miami.

OF Spencer Jones was missing from the lineup again tonight (back spasms). OF Everson Pereira, who I think is a candidate to replace Aaron Judge for as long as he is on the injured list, was in the Scranton lineup, as was veteran outfielder Bryan De La Cruz Duke Ellis, who swatted four hits (including three doubles) last night, was not in the lineup. I don’t think he would be the replacement for Judge, but anything is possible. It is a long trip from Rochester to the Bronx (over five hours), so asking Pereira to play and hop into a car for that journey would be weird. We’ll find out soon enough.

I saw Heyman’s note about the Yankees not dealing Jones unless someone like Paul Skenes (yeah, right) became available. I don’t trust Heyman, and smoke screens exist. However, I think the Yankees will hold onto Jones and add him to the 40-man roster this winter (if he isn’t called up to the MLB).

Injury Log

Scranton (58-39; 20-5 in second half) (Defeated Rochester, 6-2)

DH Jesus Rodriguez2-for-5, RBI, SB (15), K
Rodriguez extends his hitting streak to 14 (20-for-59 (.339).
CF Everson Pereira0-for-3, R, 2 BB, K
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-5, 2B (27), RBI, R
Rumfield has ten multi-hit efforts this month (30-for-76 (.360) with ten doubles). Since the question was asked, I did a little research: I don’t believe Rumfield is eligible for minor league free agency this winter. He remains eligible for the Rule 5 if he isn’t added to the 40-man roster.
C Rafael Flores0-for-3, 2 BB
Flores had a 9.0% Double-A walk rate. So far for Scranton, he has nine walks in 36 plate appearances (25%). Small sample size noise? Likely.
3B Jeimer Candelario1-for-4, R, BB, K
RF Bryan De La Cruz1-for-5, RBI, 2 K
LF Jose Rojas1-for-4, 2B (25), RBI, R, SB (4), 2 K
2B Nicky Lopez2-for-4, RBI, R
Lopez is hitting .273 (15-for-55) since signing.
SS Andrew Velazquez2-for-4, 2B (14), RBI, R, K

RHP Carlos Carrasco: (W, 4-2) 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, HR
Carrasco’s third straight 7-inning effort.
RHP Eric Reyzelman1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.92 ERA (39 IP, 25 H, 17 R, 17 ER, 5 HR, 39 BB, 41 K). Reyzelman won’t survive with that walk rate, but lowering his ERA under 4.00 shows his talent.
RHP Kervin Castro1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Somerset (51-44; 16-10 in second half) (Defeated Erie, 9-6)

CF Brendan Jones1-for-3, 3B (3), 3 R, 2 BB
After hitting .236/.349/.362 in 44 High-A games, he is at .232/.325/.430 in 40 Double-A games. He has turned it up in July (18-for-67; 3 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 14 R, 8-for-8 SB, 13 BB, 18 K).
SS George Lombard Jr.: 3-for-5, 2B (12), RBI, 2 R
Lombard Jr.’s first 3-hit game as a member of the Patriots. A solid stretch of games has improved his Double-A triple slash from .202/.335/.303 on July 5th to .215/.332/.342 now. It may not seem like much, but it is a 36-point jump in his OPS.
2B Roc Riggio: 3-for-5, HR (11), 2 RBI, R
Double-A is not slowing down Riggio, who has homered in back-to-back games (after doubling in back-to-back games). To be exact, he’s hitting better here than he did at any other level.  He is at .273/.346/.573 in 159 PA (11 doubles, 11 HR, 28 RBI, 25 R, 7-for-10 SB, 7.5% BB, 22.6% K).
1B Dylan Jasso3-for-5, 3 RBI, R
Jasso owns a 5-game hitting streak (9-for-23). He is at .270/.338/.448 in 367 PA (13 doubles, 5 triples, 12 HR, 50 RBI, 51 R). He has 14 games at first base, 18 games at second base, and 49 games at third base. As you may guess, his time at second base has gone down since Riggio’s promotion.
   PR Cam Eden0-for-0, R
   1B Duncan Pastore0-for-0
RF Jace Avina1-for-5, RBI, K
Since promotion: .250/.386/.472 in 44 PA.  After going 0-for-6 in his first two games (though he reached base in both games), he is now on an 8-game hitting streak.
C Omar Martinez0-for-5, 2 K
DH Tyler Hardman1-for-5, 3B (2), R, K
LF Jared Wegner1-for-3, SF, 2 RBI, K
3B Max Burt0-for-4

RHP Trent Sellers5.1 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
A rare misstep for Sellers, who is typically solid in his relatively short outings (he has yet to complete six innings professionally). Season: 4.16 ERA (75.2 IP, 66 H, 38 R, 35 ER,8 HR, 37 BB, 87 K)
RHP Cole Ayers1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Mason Vinyard (W, 3-2): 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (56-36; 19-10 second half) (Took down Rome, 5-1)

LF Jackson Castillo2-for-3, 2B (15), HR (5), 2 RBI, R, SB (19), BB, K
Castillo is hitting .247/.345/.348 in 368 PA (15 doubles, 1 triple, 5 HR, 43 RBI, 43 R, 19-for-20 SB, 12.2% BB, 20.1% K). He is 22-for-69 (.319) with 11 walks over his last 20 games.
CF Dillon Lewis1-for-4, SB (7), 2 K
Like Castillo, Lewis has turned it up in July (17-for-57 (.298); 2 doubles, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 7 R, 5-for-5 SB, 7 BB, 11 K). Between Tampa and Hudson Valley, he has 16 home runs and 20 stolen bases in 21 attempts.
DH Coby Morales0-for-3, RBI, BB, K
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, K
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-3, 2B (16), BB, 2 K
Colmenares has two doubles and two homers in his last four games.
3B Josh Moylan1-for-4, SB (7), K
C Manuel Palencia1-for-4, R
1B Kiko Romero1-for-3, HR (2), 2 RBI, R, BB, K
RF Anthony Hall0-for-1, 2 R, SB (6), 3 BB

RHP Ben Hess4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K
Hess tossed 71 pitches tonight. He owns a 3.65 ERA in 61.2 IP (40 H, 29 R, 25 ER, 2 HR, 32 BB, 89 K). Last four appearances: 16 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 23 K.
RHP Bryce Warrecker0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Warrecker was used as a bridge tonight.
RHP Gage Ziehl (W, 1-0): 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Ziehl’s High-A debut goes well.

Tampa (45-46; 9-17 in the second half) (Lost to Clearwater, 5-3)

C Edgleen Perez1-for-4
Perez had a hot stretch before the All-Star Break but is in a 2-for-31 slide and has zero extra-base hits in 15 July games.  Could it be fatigue? Certainly.
SS Roderick Arias0-for-4, RBI, K
DH Engelth Urena0-for-2, R, 2 BB
.205/.334/.326 in 371 PA. Urena is having a rough July (10-for-53; 2 doubles, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 8 BB, 17 K)
3B Juan Matheus0-for-3, R, HBP
CF Willy Montero2-for-4
Montero is 14-for-46 (.304) since coming back from his rehab stint.
RF Wilson Rodriguez0-for-2, SF, RBI, HBP
Since promotion: .227/.294/.341 in 13 games (2 doubles, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 4 BB, 7 K)
LF Marshall Toole0-for-4, K
A little 0-for-11 slump has dropped his triple slash to .300/.409/.479.
2B Owen Cobb1-for-3
1B Josue Gonzalez1-for-3, 2B (7), R, K

LHP Allen Facundo: (L, 0-1) 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
Since people love to hear about his velocity, he hit 97.8 MPH today. He throws both a hard 4-seamer and sinker, though his most-used pitch is his slider. The 6’0″ lefty has the raw talent. It’s all about putting it together. Season (including FCL time): 16.1 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 25 K.
RHP Cole Zaffiro0.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 K
RHP Mariano Salomon3.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR

FCL (28-30)

Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (16-23) (Defeated the DSL Bombers, 6-5)

CF Francisco Vilorio3-for-5, 2B (6), RBI, R, SB (6), CS (3), K
There is zero doubt Vilorio is coming stateside in 2026. He is on a 6-game hitting streak (10-for-25).
DH Mani Cedeno0-for-3, SB (12), 2 BB, 3 K
I don’t want to get too deep with a 16-year-old, but yeah – the strikeout rate isn’t ideal (36.4%).
3B Richard Matic2-for-3, 3B (2), R, BB
Matic should join Vilorio stateside in 2026. He is hitting .358/.493/.575 in 140 PA (10 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR, 25 RBI, 29 R, 5-for-10 SB, 20% BB, 22.9% K)
C Justin Capellan0-for-4, RBI, K
RF Estivenzon Montero2-for-4, RBI, R, SB (7)
.296/.384/.537 in 125 PA. Last season, he wasn’t overwhelmed at this level (.242/.361/.364 as a 17-year-old). Another prospect to watch for the FCL next season.
1B Edgar Jimenez1-for-3, R, SB (4), BB
LF Angel Ventura2-for-3, 2B (4), 2 R, SB (13), BB, K
In 59 career games, Ventura is 31-for-36 in the stolen base department.
2B Adrian Feliz1-for-3, RBI, SB (4), CS (3), BB, K

RHP Anthony Mena 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
4.15 ERA (34.2 IP, 36 H, 29 R, 16 ER, 5 HR, 14 BB, 42 K). He has 22 strikeouts in 14 innings over his last three starts.
RHP Varis Villarreal (W, 3-2): 2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

DSL Bombers (21-18) (Lost to the DSL Yankees, 6-5)

SS Stiven Marinez0-for-4, 2 K
CF Ruben Castillo1-for-3, 2 R, SB (16), 2 CS (6), BB, K
LF Jose Castro1-for-4, R, SB (11), 2 K
C Carlos Villarroel0-for-3, RBI, R, BB, K
.237/.370/.454 in 119 PA. Last season, in his professional debut, he hit .299/.390/.410.
2B Juan Torres1-for-4, 2 RBI, R, SB (11)
The strong offense continues. He is hitting .340/.398/.510 and has 25 RBI and 24 runs in 32 games.

RHP Luis Burgos3.2 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
2.48 ERA (36.1 IP, 25 H, 15 R, 10 ER, 2 HR, 14 BB, 38 K)
RHP Diego Carrillo: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
3.75 ERA (24 IP, 21 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 3 HR, 10 BB, 20 K)

Yankees MILB 7/13: Carlos Lagrange: 5 Hitless Innings

Notes:

RHP Luis Gil made his first rehab appearance today for Somerset.

The draft is tonight. The Yankees, along with the Dodgers and Mets, were penalized for having the audacity to improve their roster and had their draft position dropped ten slots. They will pick 39th.

Recent history suggests that the Yankees will likely select someone who attended an SEC school or was committed to one. Four of their last six top picks fit that description (Anthony Volpe, Spencer Jones, George Lombard Jr., Ben Hess). The two exceptions were Austin Wells (Arizona) and Trey Sweeney (Eastern Illinois).

The latest mock from Pipeline has them choosing either Alabama RHP Riley Quick (Jonathan Mayo) or Tennessee RHP Marcus Phillips (Jim Callis). Both are playing the percentages. When you read their scouting reports, they feel like the types of pitchers the Yankees would target. Quick is big (6’6″) and powerful. His write-up feels like Ben Hess 2.0. Phillips can reach triple digits, but he has command issues.

As stated yesterday, all full-season leagues are on a 4-day break after today. What will I be doing? Likely nothing, though maybe I will type up a “mid-season, though it isn’t” review.

Injury Log

Scranton (52-37; 14-3 in second half) (Defeated Buffalo, 5-4)

By the way, Triple-A playoffs are different than the rest. Because they play an “overall championship” game between the PCL and the International League, the regular playoffs are condensed into one championship series. The division you play in doesn’t matter – the best record in the first half faces the best record in the second half for the title. The good news is that Scranton has the overall second-half lead right now.

DH Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4, 2 RBI, CS (6), 2 K
Rodriguez has a 9-game hitting streak. Since they traded Alex Jackson, he has become an “iron man” catcher. They are giving him five days off from those duties. Between here and Somerset, he enters the break at .291/.389/.381 in 352 PA (.310/.410/.410 for Scranton).
CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, HR (7), RBI, R, K
Jones’ 23rd HR places him one behind minor league leader Ryan Wood (Dodgers), who has 24 in 87 games. Wood is a 27-year-old minor league veteran who consistently hits a bunch of homers. Of more significance is a player Jones is tied with: 21-year-old Mariners’ prospect Lazaro Montes, the 28th-ranked prospect in baseball (Pipeline). Anyway, he is hitting .362/.426/.776 in 68 PA here and .296/.399/.639 in 276 PA overall. With his K%, you may wonder what his BABIP is. It is certainly high (.377) but perhaps not as insane as you would have expected it to be. That’s because of all the home runs. Regardless, what a season he is having.
RF Everson Pereira0-for-3, R, BB, K
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-3, R, BB, K
Rumfield doesn’t want the break to come. He is in a 5-game hitting streak and is 16-for-43 (.372) in July.
3B Jeimer Candelario0-for-4, K
Candelario is 2-for-24 since signing. That won’t give the Yankees any incentive to give him a chance!
2B Jake Gatewood0-for-3, K
SS Andrew Velazquez: 2-for-3, 2 RBI, R, SB (22)
C Edinson Duran1-for-3, R, SB (1)
Duran’s first game since April 27th. I guess if I were on the sidelines for that long, I would be frisky on the basepaths too! Signed by the Yankees in 2021, the 22-year-old has played in only 122 games. In 2023, in the FCL, he hit .314/.405/.457 in 32 games.
LF Duke Ellis1-for-2, 2 SB (12), BB

RHP Carlos Carrasco: (W, 2-2)  7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
RHP Harrison Cohen1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
Cohen allows his first run since his promotion (9.1 IP)
RHP Kervin Castro (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
1.88 ERA (24 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 31 K). Can the 26-year-old be an addition to the 2025 bullpen?  He isn’t a fireballer, though he is in the 91-93 range with his cutter. The Yankees need to look for something better, but Castro is proving to be decent depth.

Somerset (45-41; 12-6 in second half) (Defeated New Hampshire, 5-1)

LF Brendan Jones: 1-for-5, HR (3), RBI, R, K
Jones’ HR was a leadoff blast. Since promotion: .241/.323/.420 in 130 PA (7 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR, 24 RBI, 16 R, 7-for-8 SB, 11.5% BB, 19.2% K). He is 12-for-37 (.324) with three doubles, a triple, and two home runs (.622 SLG) in July.
C Rafael Flores: 2-for-3, 3B (1), HBP
Flores is an extra-base hit machine, but it usually manifests as doubles and homers. This is only his second career triple (first since 2023). He goes into the break hitting .284/.342/.495 in 365 PA with visions of Scranton in his dreams.
3B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, K
CF Jace Avina1-for-3, 2 R, BB
DH Omar Martinez2-for-4, R
Since promotion: .255/.321/.447 in 53 PA.
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-3, 2 RBI, R, BB
RF Cam Eden1-for-4, RBI, CS (1), K
SS Max Burt1-for-3, SB (10), HBP, K
2B Duncan Pastore0-for-4, 2 K
I assume Pastore will be back in Hudson Valley once Lombard Jr. is back on Friday.

RHP Luis Gil3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, HR
Gil’s first rehab start. He tossed 50 pitches (36 strikes)
RHP Luis Pacheco0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Carlos Lagrange: (W, 4-2) 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K
I always wonder if going from “starter” to “piggyback” impacts a youngster in any way. The answer is an emphatic “no” from Carlos Lagrange. For Somerset: 3.79 ERA (35.2 IP, 20 H, 15 R, 15 ER, 3 HR, 22 BB, 49 K). Overall: 8-4 with a 3.96 ERA (77.1 IP, 51 H, 35 R, 34 ER, 7 HR, 34 BB, 113 K). He leads Yankees’ farmhands in strikeouts and is in the top five in all of minor league baseball.

Hudson Valley (52-33; 14-7 second half) (Defeated Asheville, 3-2. Eight of Hudson Valley’s starters collected at least one hit, though only one went for extra bases)

LF Jackson Castillo1-for-4, R
July: 15-for-39 (.385; 2 doubles, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 9 R, 5-for-6 SB, 5 BB). He was hitting .225 after the June 26th game. He is now hitting .251.
CF Dillon Lewis: 2-for-4, 2B (4), R, K
Lewis has a modest 4-game hitting streak (6-for-15; 1 double, 2 HR). Hopefully, this is the start of a strong finish.
1B Coby Morales1-for-4, 2 RBI
SS Alexander Vargas2-for-4
2B Jose Colmenares2-for-4, R, K
3B Josh Moylan: 2-for-4, RBI, K
C Tomas Frick1-for-3, K
DH Kiko Romero1-for-3
RF Anthony Hall0-for-3

RHP Ben Hess3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
Speaking of first-round picks, Hess blew away Asheville hitters today (they are limiting his pitches after he was out for nearly a month between late May and June. In his last start before being shut down, he tossed 99 pitches.) He owns a 4.08 ERA in 53 IP (34 H, 28 R, 24 ER, 2 HR, 32 BB, 80 K). His 34% K rate entering today will be going up.
RHP Bryce Warrecker1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Warrecker reaches the break with a 0.96 ERA in 37.1 IP (17 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 39 K). I think that is more than enough to get him to New Jersey.
RHP Ocean Gabonia: (W, 2-2) 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
3.74 ERA (21.2 IP, 23 H, 14 R, 9 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 19 K)
RHP Jordany Ventura0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Huey Morrill: (S, 4)  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
0.29 ERA (31 IP, 12 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 22 K)

Tampa (45-40; 9-11 in second half) (Lost to Lakeland, 3-2)

C Edgleen Perez0-for-3, R, BB
Perez is hitting .214/.375/.240 in 344 PA (7 doubles, 0 HR, 25 RBI, 38 R, 5-for-6 SB, 18.6% BB, 18.6% K). One has to like the 1.00 K/BB. After a nice surge, he went 0-for-12 in his final three games before the break. He’s played a lot this year (75 games; 51 was his previous high), and fatigue can certainly set in, even as a teenager. Let’s hope he comes back refreshed.
RF Brian Sanchez1-for-2, 2 BB
.278/.371/.436 in 285 PA (24-for-28 SB). The 21-year-old has adjusted nicely in his first year in a full-season league.
DH Roderick Arias2-for-4
It’s been a tough go for Arias from the start. At no point during the first half did he reach .200 (.194/.315/.306). His continued lack of success against LHP hurts (7-for-51 with one extra-base hit), but he isn’t crushing RHP either (.209/.333/.346). He has a major uphill battle.
LF Willy Montero1-for-4, 2B (2), K
Montero is 9-for-25 with a pair of doubles and a triple. He has multiple hits in four of his six Low-A games.
3B Juan Matheus0-for-2, SF, RBI, BB
.263/.355/.349 in 332 PA (19 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 38 RBI, 41 R, 31-for-39 SB (79.5%), 12.7% BB, 20.8% K). He has six starts at second base, 24 at shortstop, and 48 at third base.
CF Wilson Rodriguez0-for-4, 2 K
2B Austin Green0-for-4, R, SB (7), K
SS Owen Cobb0-for-3, K
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-2, SF, RBI, K

RHP Gage Ziehl6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6 K
Including his one emergency start with Somerset: 4.25 ERA (78.1 IP, 85 H, 45 R, 37 ER, 7 HR, 14 BB, 67 K). Last year’s 4th-round pick (Miami) has pitched well enough to be intriguing. By the way, he wasn’t drafted in the 4th round to “save money” as he received a slightly over-slot bonus ($637,000).

Yankees MILB 7/1: Engelth Urena Homers

Notes:

C/UTIL Anthony Seigler, the Yankees’ first-round pick in 2018, has earned his union card. The Milwaukee Brewers, who signed him as a minor league free agent last winter, added him to the roster today.

Drafted as a catcher, the Yankees started giving him time at second base in 2023. In 2024, he stopped catching entirely to focus on his new position.

This year, the Brewers started letting him catch again while giving him a new position to learn (third base). Additionally, he still gets time at second base.

The main culprit in Seigler’s development stalling was injuries. Moving to second base seemed to help him last season, as he played in a career-high 118 games, hitting .234/.350/.398 with 29 stolen bases in 32 attempts. That wasn’t enough for the Yankees to add him to the 40-man.

For the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate this year, he is hitting .277/.415/.465 in 267 plate appearances with 20 stolen bases in 23 attempts.

A unique ability to play catcher and a few other positions, plus his ability to steal bases, make him an intriguing bench piece at least.

RHP Baron Stuart was promoted from Somerset to Scranton.

Yankees MILB 6/25: Cam Schlittler: Cheat Code?

Notes:

RHP Ben Hess, last year’s first-round pick, magically made his way back to the mound tonight after missing nearly a month for (?) reasons.

Injury Log

Scranton (40-34) (Defeated Worcester, 4-0)

C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4
Cam Schlittler ran into a little trouble in the 6th inning tonight (allowed three baserunners). Rodriguez helped out his battery mate by throwing out a runner trying to steal. He has caught 15 runners in 40 attempts (37.5%) between Somerset and Scranton. Last season, his success rate was 20.4%.
2B Jorbit Vivas1-for-3, R, CS (6), BB, K
RF Everson Pereira1-for-4, R, 3 K
1B T.J. Rumfield: 3-for-4, 2B (17), 2 RBI, K
Rumfield’s fourth 3+ hit game this season (19th multi-hit effort).
  PR-3B Andrew Velazquez0-for-0, R, SB (18)
3B-1B CJ Alexander0-for-3, BB, K
DH Jose Rojas: 2-for-4, 2B (18), RBI, R, 2 SB (7), K
SS Braden Shewmake0-for-4, K
LF Ismael Munguia1-for-3, RBI, SB (17), BB
CF Duke Ellis1-for-3, 2B (1), SB (3), CS (3), BB
Last year, Ellis was 57-for-61 (93.4%) stealing bases. He may still be trying to get his legs under him after returning from injury.

RHP Cam Schlittler: (W, 2-1)  6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K
Schlittler, who retired the first 15 batters,  hit 99.3 MPH (also had a 99.2 MPH offering + several pitches over 97) and generated 20 whiffs. For now, if they want to mess around with Allan Winans and Marcus Stroman, whatever. That is especially true if Luis Gil is on the comeback trail. If Schlittler keeps this up, however, they will have a decision to make at some point.  Since promotion: 1.69 ERA (21.1 IP, 13 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 33 K). Overall, he owns a 97/25 K/BB over 74.1 innings. I will gladly call out any site that doesn’t place him on their mid-season Top 100.
RHP Eric Reyzelman1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Can he get his BB% down to a reasonable number (doesn’t need to be great) while maintaining his ability to limit hits?  Answer that riddle to determine if he can be a successful MLB reliever.
RHP Geoff Hartlieb: (S, 2) 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
3.58 ERA (32.2 IP, 34 H, 16 R, 13 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 36 K)

Somerset (35-36) (Lost to Erie, 9-3. After feasting on New Hamspire last week, the Patriots have run into the buzzsaw known as Erie. They are 47-24.)

2B Roc Riggio0-for-3, HBP, K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-3, 2B (5), R, BB
Lombard Jr. has raised his SLG from .281 to .329 over his last nine games. His Double-A triple slash is now .219/.353/.329 in 44 games. In his first 29 High-A games (2023), his triple slash was .226/.321/.296. We need to allow for more adjustment time in Double-A, and it appears to be happening.
RF Spencer Jones1-for-4, HR (16), RBI, R, K
Jones is alternating home run and non-home run games (HR, no HR, HR, no HR, HR, no HR, HR, no HR, HR). He has seven home runs in June and is hitting .271/.389/.600 in 203 PA (8 doubles, 16 HR, 31 RBI, 10-for-12 SB, 15.8% BB, 33.99% K). There is no rush to get a prospect from Double-A to Triple-A, but Jones is up to 187 games for Somerset.
1B Rafael Flores2-for-4, RBI, K
Flores was slumping for a bit but now has four straight 2-hit efforts (8-for-18 with four doubles). That has spiked his triple slash from .271/.335/.471 to .282/.343/.484.
3B Dylan Jasso0-for-4, K
I don’t think I brought up his extended on-base streak (28 games) once before last night. Of course, it would be broken the next day. Sorry.
CF Brendan Jones0-for-4
DH Garrett Martin0-for-4
C Omar Martinez1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, R, K
Martinez homers in his Double-A debut.
LF Cam Eden0-for-3, 3 K

RHP Carlos Lagrange: (L, 2-2)   4 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 7 BB, 4 K
Lagrange settled down a little after a 4-run second inning, but this wasn’t his best night (he struck out 12 in 5.1 innings last time out). Since promotion: 6.05 ERA (19.1 IP, 17 H, 13 R, 13 ER, 2 HR, 15 BB, 24 K). He is alternating good and bad starts since his promotion (6 IP, 3 R, 1 BB, 6 K; 4 IP, 5 R, 5 BB, 2 K; 5.1 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 12 K; 4 IP, 4 R, 7 BB, 4 K). I expected the BB rate to climb after his promotion. We’ll see how he adjusts.
RHP Mason Vinyard0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Will Brian2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
At this level: 2.28 ERA (23.2 IP, 18 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 27 K)
RHP Indigo Diaz1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Ryan Anderson1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (41-27) (Used an 8-run inning to wallop Wilmington, 10-3)

DH Jackson Castillo2-for-6, RBI, R
Last eight games: 10-for-34 (.294). He is hitting better, though the power is non-existent (zero extra-base hits in June; 19 straight games overall)
CF Dillon Lewis0-for-2, R, HBP, 2 BB, K
1B Coby Morales: 2-for-4, 2B (13), 2 RBI, 2 R, SB (12), BB
RF Jace Avina0-for-2, SF, RBI, R, HBP, K
   RF Luis Durango0-for-1
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-5, 2B (9), 3 RBI, R, 2 K
A big 3-run double in that 5th inning.
SS Alexander Vargas: 3-for-5, HR (3), 2 RBI, 2 R
I always like to see Vargas do well. The bat hasn’t been consistent during his development, which consists of 427 games.
C Manuel Palencia1-for-4, R, BB
The 22-year-old hit .312/.380/.422 in 121 PA for the FCL squad. While this is his first taste of High-A, it isn’t his first taste of a full-season league. He played in 39 games for Low-A Tampa between 2023 and 2024.
3B Brenny Escanio: 2-for-5, RBI, R, K
LF Anthony Hall1-for-5, 2 K

RHP Ben Hess1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Hess tosses 42 pitches in his return. As long as he is healthy, that’s what is important. Season: 4.32 ERA (41.2 IP, 28 H, 24 R, 20 ER, 1 HR, 27 BB, 62 K)
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
3.20 ERA (19.2 IP, 17 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 32 K). That’s a lot of strikeouts for the 24-year-old, who has 100 in 76 career innings. He missed significant time due to injury last year; otherwise, he may be in Somerset now.
RHP Chris Kean: (W, 4-2) 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Matt Keating2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.78 ERA (22.2 IP, 16 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 24 K)
RHP Tony Rossi1.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Rossi allows a run for the first time in his career (25.1 innings). He owns a 0.36 ERA between here and Tampa with a 33/8 K/BB.

Tampa (38-32) (Lost to Ft. Myers, 3-1. The Tarpons had their chances, as they walked nine times + a hit batter. The big hit, however, was elusive as they went 1-for-14 with RISP.)

C Edgleen Perez3-for-5, R
.205/.362/.233 in 276 PA (6 doubles, 0 HR, 19 RBI, 30 R, 4-for-5 SB, 17.8% BB, 21% K). While the BB% is a good reason to lead him off, it goes beyond that. The Yankees want him to get as many reps as possible.
CF Brian Sanchez: 1-for-4, BB, 2 K
.267/.350/.429 in 220 PA (14 doubles, 4 triples, 3 HR, 29 RBI, 27 R, 18-for-22 SB, 10.9% BB, 24.5% K)
SS Roderick Arias0-for-5, 4 K
Ouch. After a brief surge, Arias is back to his old tricks and is hitting .174/.301/.250 in 219 PA. He has a 29.2% K rate, which is slightly down from last season. That offers little comfort, and Arias is getting closer to bust territory.
DH Engelth Urena1-for-3, RBI, SB (6), HBP, BB
.214/.347/.345 in 291 PA (10 doubles, 7 HR, 29 RBI, 42 R, 14.1% BB, 17.9% K). He has two doubles, two homers, and seven RBI in his last seven games.
3B Juan Matheus0-for-3, SB (22), 2 BB
.261/.352/.336 in 267 PA (15 doubles, 1 triple, 0 HR, 30 RBI, 35 R, 22-for-29 SB, 12.7% BB, 22.5% K). After a strong May, Matheus is hitting .200/.333/.293 in June. The volume of walks has allowed him to go 8-for-10 stealing bases.
LF Hans Montero0-for-4, BB, K
RF Marshall Toole0-for-4, 2 K
.292/.385/.453 in 187 PA with a 21-for-23 SB rate. A little 1-for-12 slide has dropped him under .300.
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-1, 3 BB
Gonzalez had three walks in his last ten games entering tonight.
2B Santiago Gomez0-for-3, SB (3), BB, 3 K

RHP Gage Ziehl: (L, 3-3) 8 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
I don’t type “8 IP” very often. Ziehl needed only 93 pitches (71 strikes; 76.3%) and had a 13/4 GO/FO ratio, including a pair of double plays. Season: 3.61 ERA (57.1 IP, 54 H, 27 R, 23 ER, 4 HR, 10 BB, 45 K). He entered tonight with a 48.8% ground ball rate.

Yankees MILB 6/19: Carlos Lagrange Strikes Out 12

Notes:

C Antonio Gomez was placed on the Development List for Somerset. Normally, I don’t care much about that list, but Gomez jumps out because he was, at one time, one of the top catching prospects in the system.

Gomez’s bat has stalled. This season, he is hitting .140/.225/.168 (26 wRC+) in 121 plate appearances for the Patriots. This comes after a (somewhat) promising 2024 campaign, where he hit .241/.329/.419 (111 wRC+) in 222 plate appearances between Tampa and Hudson Valley.

With Luke Weaver‘s return imminent, Jayvien Sandridge‘s stint in New York will likely be short. Sandridge, who has a similar profile to Jake Diekman (pitched in 705 games, believe it or not), starts his service time clock, gets his union card, and earns MLB medical benefits. It’s not easy to earn a living the way Diekman did, but Sandridge should get his MLB opportunities.

Injury Log

Scranton (36-33) (Lost to Louisville, 6-3)

3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4
We seemingly don’t get many ho-hum 1-for-4 efforts out of Rodriguez!
2B Jorbit Vivas0-for-3, HBP, K
CF Everson Pereira0-for-3, 2 R, BB, K
.246/.340/.480 in 203 PA (5 doubles, 12 HR, 34 RBI, 44 R, 5-for-6 SB, 11.3% BB, 32.5% K)
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-4, HR (9), 2 RBI, R, K
A 110.7 MPH, 404-foot blast. He is on a 6-game hitting streak (9-for-23) and has raised his triple slash to .289/.379/.491.
DH Brennen Davis0-for-3, SF, RBI, K
Davis is 15-for-43 (.349) with five homers and 14 RBI in 12 games for Scranton.
LF Bryan De La Cruz1-for-4, 2 K
C Alex Jackson1-for-4, K
RF Jose Rojas0-for-3, BB
SS Andrew Velazquez1-for-3, BB, K

RHP Cam Schlittler: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K
Schlittler reached 99.1 MPH and averaged 97.4. Furthermore, he generated an incredible 19 whiffs (and spread them out – 4-seamer (7), slider (5), sweeper (4), curveball (3)). With this type of performance often comes with a consequence: Pitches. He needed 94 to generate the 15 outs.  Since promotion: 2.35 ERA (15.1 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 24 K). Overall: 2.37 ERA (68.1 IP, 58 H, 23 R, 18 ER, 3 HR, 24 BB, 88 K). It’s going to become tempting to call him up and fans will start asking for it. When will that happen?  For now, they don’t need a starter so he can continue to work on what he needs to work on.
LHP Brent Headrick: (L, 2-1)  1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Colten Brewer1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

2B Roc Riggio0-for-5, R, 3 K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-5, HR (2), RBI, R, SB (13), K
Lombard Jr. has a double, triple, and homer in his last four games. He also has a pair of stolen bases. He has raised his OPS from .623 to .658. It was still under .600 (.589) on June 7th. Progress is being seen.
CF Spencer Jones0-for-3, R, BB, 2 K
2025: 16.8% BB, 35.2% K; 2024: 9.9% BB, 36.8% K.
C Rafael Flores2-for-4, HR (12), RBI, R
Flores breaks out of his little slump doing what he does best – hitting for power. He is up to 27 home runs in 130 Double-A games.
DH Dylan Jasso1-for-4, R, K
Jasso has a 9-game hitting streak (11-for-32). He won’t turn 23 until November and is 1.7 years younger than the Eastern League average.
RF Garrett Martin0-for-4, K
LF Cole Gabrielson2-for-4, RBI
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-4, 2B (10)
3B Max Burt0-for-4, 2 K

RHP Carlos Lagrange: (W, 2-1)  5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 12 K (new personal best)
Lagrange struck out seven in a row at one point. We don’t get full StatCast data at this level, but Lagrange generated 20 whiffs. At this level: 5.28 ERA (15.1 IP, 14 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 20 K). Those numbers are skewed by one bad start among his three. Overall, between here and Hudson Valley, he owns a 84/20 K/BB over 57 innings.
RHP Baron Stuart1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Indigo Diaz1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Luis Pacheco1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (38-26)

Their game against Jersey Shore was cancelled and will not be made up.

Someone asked me about Parks Harberwho has been missing from the lineup. He’s still listed as active but hasn’t played since June 12th. Harber was not in tonight’s posted lineup. If anything changes with his status, I will let you know.

Tampa (36-29) (Lost to Bradenton, 6-5, in a back-and-forth 11-inning affair)

DH Edgleen Perez0-for-4, HBP, K
CF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, 2B (14), 2 R, HBP, BB
SS Roderick Arias: 2-for-4, 2B (11), RBI, R, SB (18), CS (5), BB, 2 K
First goal: Get to .200 (he’s at .189). Arias has four multi-hit efforts in his last seven games and is 15-for-66 (.227) in June. He started the month 5-for-40, so we’ll take the improvement.
C Engelth Urena0-for-4, SF, RBI
3B Juan Matheus1-for-3, RBI, R, 2 BB, 2 K
RF Tyler Wilson1-for-5, R
Wilson has 23 hits, 13 runs, 12 RBI, and 11 walks in 15 June games.
LF Hans Montero1-for-5, RBI, SB (11), 2 K
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-5, K
2B Santiago Gomez1-for-5, RBI, SB (1), 3 K
Gomez earns his first Low-A hit.

RHP Gage Ziehl: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K (new personal best)
Poor Gage had to compete with the Schlittler and Lagrange efforts. He held up quite well, though, and generated nine whiffs with his slider. Season: 3.83 ERA (53.1 IP, 56 H, 28 R, 25 ER, 4 HR, 10 BB, 47 K).
RHP Jack Sokol1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.13 ERA (23 IP, 23 H, 11 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 18 K). Something tells me StatCast is “off” by showing us that he features six pitches, especially since four of them were used only once.
RHP Cade Austin : (L, 3-1)  2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR

FCL (17-17) (Defeated the Phillies, 4-3. The Yankees are five games behind the Tigers (four in the loss column)).

.306/.376/.418 in 109 PA. He is 16-for-39 (.410) in June.
LF Wilson Rodriguez1-for-4, 2B (3), RBI, K
.321/.406/.482 in 65 PA. I don’t write these on Monday and I forgot to note on Tuesday that he hit his second home run that day.
DH Ediel Rivera2-for-4, 2B (6), R, SB (6), K
.265/.351/.398 in 97 PA (6 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 6-for-8 SB). He is having a solid debut campaign.
2B Gabriel Terrero1-for-3, HR (2), 3 RBI, R, K
The 19-year-old has shown some pop in the rookie leagues (17 doubles, 11 HR, 59 RBI, 67 R in 100 games).
1B John Cristino2-for-3, R
He is a not-so-surprising (since he is 25) 12-for-36 in his professional debut.

RHP Omar Gonzalez4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 5 K
RHP Justin Lange (W, 1-0): 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Lange earns his first win since August 16th, 2023.
RHP Chance Nolan: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
11 games: 0.00 ERA (12.1 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 5 BB, 9 K).
RHP Alexis Paulino (S, 3): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Paulino (22) is trying to cut down on the walk rate (128/88 K/BB in 97 career innings; 21/7 K/BB in 14.2 IP this year)

DSL Yankees (5-7) (Destroyed the DSL Tigers, 11-1)

SS Mani Cedeno3-for-5, 3B (1), 3 RBI, 2 R, K
The 16-year-old’s career is short (10 games), but this is his best career effort (first multi-hit game). He is 8-for-34 (.235/.381/.294) with five RBI and eight runs.
DH Francisco Vilorio0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 K
2B Carlos Bello0-for-2, 2 R, SB (4), 2 BB, K
The 17-year-old’s value has been tied into walks thus far (ten walks in ten games).
3B Richard Matic0-for-1, SF, RBI, R, 2 BB, K
C Justin Capellan2-for-3, 2B (3), 2 RBI, R
.308/.345/.538 in 29 PA.
LF Isaias Castillo2-for-4, 2B (3), 2 RBI, R, SB (7)
The 17-year-old continues his solid play in his professional debut (9-for-22 (.409); 3 doubles, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R, 7-for-7 SB, 4 BB, 5 K)
CF Angel Ventura2-for-4, R, K
6-for-24 with a pair of doubles and a triple.
1B Jose Lavagnino0-for-3, SF, RBI
The 17-year-old is off to a 2-for-13 start to his professional career.
RF Alfiery Matos2-for-3, 3 R, BB
The 17-year-old compiles his first career multi-hit game.

RHP Jhosneyker Colina (W, 1-0):  5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
Colina earns his first professional win in his third start. The 17-year-old owns a 3.48 ERA in 10.1 innings with a 9/7 K/BB.
LHP Luis Rodriguez2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

DSL Bombers (6-6) (Defeated the DSL Mariners, 10-2)

DH Ruben Castillo2-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, R, SB (7), CS (1), BB, K
He is making the most of his 6-for-38 professional start (1 double, 2 triples, 3 RBI, 7 R, 7-for-8 SB)
SS Stiven Marinez1-for-4, RBI, R, SB (8), BB, K
Marinez begins his career 8-for-29 (3 RBI, 8 R, 8-for-8 SB, 8 BB, 9 K). So far, so good.
C Queni Pineda2-for-4, 2B (3), 2 RBI, R, BB
Pineda is cruising along (12-for-34, 3 doubles, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 7 R, 4-for-4 SB, 7 BB, 5 K)
CF Browm Martinez3-for-5, HR (3), RBI, 2 R
The 18-year-old was solid in 2024 (.278/.386/.313) but is turning up the heat in 2025 (.423/.516/.769 with three homers). He doesn’t qualify for rate statistic leaderboards, but the league leaders in homers have four.
LF David Carrera2-for-4, R, CS (3), BB

RHP Diego Carrillo (W, 2-0): 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

8.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 12 K

Yankees MILB 6/5: Jesus Rodriguez Reaches Base 5 Times

Notes:

RHP Justin Lange (remember him?) started a rehab assignment today in the FCL. Acquired by the Yankees from the Padres for 1B Luke Voit (remember him?) back in 2022, Lange has dealt with wildness and injuries during his Yankees tenure. Today was his first appearance since August 29, 2023. He split time with Tampa and Hudson Valley that year, going 2-5 with a 4.75 ERA and 131/63 K/BB over 85.1 innings. While that walk rate is high (16%), don’t ignore the strikeout rate (33.2%).

Amazingly, Lange is only 23 years old. When I opened his player page, I was expecting to see that he was in his mid-20s.

Injury Log

Scranton (27-30) (Defeated St. Paul, 11-8. Call me crazy, but I think St. Paul’s ballpark leans a tad offensive)

3B Jesus Rodriguez: 2-for-3, 2B (9), RBI, 2 R, HBP, 2 BB
Rodriguez reaches base five times. In 40 Triple-A games, Rodriguez has 55 hits, 26 walks, and two HBP. He has scored 31 runs and is hitting .362 with a .921 OPS.
2B Jorbit Vivas2-for-6, HR (3), 3 RBI, 2 R, K
Vivas’s first game since his demotion. His 22-game MLB audition wasn’t great (.156/.255/.267 with a key home run). He struck out 20.8% of the time and his BABIP was a ridiculous .182, which comes with the small sample size flag.
RF Everson Pereira2-for-5, R, 2 K
Pereira is having a nice season, but is carrying a 33.1% K rate.
1B T.J. Rumfield: 1-for-3, RBI, R, 2 BB
C Alex Jackson0-for-4, R, BB, 3 K
DH Jose Rojas0-for-5, RBI, 3 K
LF Brennen Davis1-for-3, 2 RBI, R, HBP, BB, 2 K
Davis is 6-for-11 with a homer and three RBI since being placed here.
SS Braden Shewmake: 3-for-5, 2B (3), 2 R, SB (7)
Shewmake is enjoying his time in St. Paul (5-for-12; 1 double, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 4 R, 3 SB)
CF Ismael Munguia1-for-5, 2B (7), 2 RBI, R

RHP Erick Leal4.1 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 3 HR
RHP Scott Effross: (W, 1-1)  1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
You don’t want to see the run he allowed, but at least he missed bats tonight.
RHP Geoff Hartlieb: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Hartlieb maxed out at 97.1 MPH. He struck out the side in his second inning of work. Season: 2.22 ERA (24.1 IP, 23 H, 9 R, 6 ER, 9 BB, 27 K). Due to an extreme walk rate (55 in 79.1 innings with the Pirates, Mets, Marlins, and Rockies), Hartlieb hasn’t been able to hold down an MLB job. The arm has never been in question.
LHP Jayvien Sandridge (S, 1): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Another impressive performance….

Somerset (24-29) (Lost to Binghamton, 7-4)

2B George Lombard Jr.1-for-3, 3B (2), RBI, R, BB, K
Position breakdown (including his time in Hudson Valley): 2B: 6; SS: 40; 3B: 4. They want him to get a feel for 2B/3B while keeping him primarily at his natural position.
CF Spencer Jones0-for-3, BB, K
C Rafael Flores1-for-4, 2B (14), RBI
.277/.339/.505 in 227 PA. Flores is up to 500 Double-A plate appearances (.275/.350/.512; 28 doubles, 26 HR, 71 RBI. For good measure, he is 11-for-11 in the stolen base department).
LF Garrett Martin0-for-4, 3 K
DH Brendan Jones0-for-4, K
3B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, HR (9), RBI, R
.269/.330/.478 in 203 PA. A good season for a 22-year-old making his Double-A debut.
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-4, HR (10), RBI, R, K
Hardman has six homers in his last six games.
RF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, 3 K
SS Max Burt0-for-2, R, SB (6), BB, K

RHP Trystan Vrieling: (L, 0-1) 3.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, HR
Vrieling has a few good outings and a few less-than-ideal outings since coming back from his rehab stint. No concerns.
RHP Danny Watson2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Harrison Cohen1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
2.21 ERA (20.1 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 26 K). He hasn’t allowed a run in seven straight outings (9.2 IP).
RHP Indigo Diaz1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (33-20) (Mauled Aberdeen, 11-2)

CF Dillon Lewis2-for-5, 3B (1), HR (1), 2 RBI, 3 R, BB, K
Lewis is 4-for-16 since his promotion and has nine home runs in his last 27 games overall. He joins Rafael Flores, Spencer Jones, Tyler Hardman, and Everson Pereira in the organization’s 10+ HR club. He is an intriguing 21-year-old to keep an eye on.
LF Jackson Castillo: 2-for-4, SF, RBI, 2 R, BB
If Lewis and Castillo can get hot, they will cause a lot of havoc at the top of this lineup.
RF Coby Morales1-for-5, RBI, BB, K
A hot streak has his numbers up to .270/.354/.453 in 181 PA at this level. For Somerset, he was 3-for-19.
1B Parks Harber2-for-4, BB, K
Since promotion: .325/.389/.491 in 126 PA. Including his time in Tampa, he has 15 multi-hit efforts in 48 games. Somerset may not be far away.
DH Omar Martinez1-for-3, RBI, 2 BB, K
2B Jose Colmenares0-for-4, R, BB, K
3B Alexander Vargas1-for-5, HR (1), 2 RBI, R, K
I feel bad for Vargas, a late spring training “sensation” who is lost in the numbers game. Part of that is the lack of development, of course. There could be a better opportunity elsewhere.
SS Brenny Escanio2-for-4, 2B (5), 2 R, SB (7), BB, K
C Tomas Frick: 2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 R

RHP Josh Grosz: (W, 4-3)  5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
Grosz had to grind out these five innings, as it required 95 pitches to record 15 outs. He owns a 3.83 ERA in 47 IP (37 H, 24 R, 20 ER, 3 HR, 16 BB, 56 K). He may get lost in the shuffle, but he has pitched very well.
RHP Tony Rossi1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
For Tampa and Hudson Valley: 19.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 25 K. Ridiculous.
RHP Bryce Warrecker: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Speaking of ridiculous, Warrecker owns a 0.75 ERA in 24 IP (8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 31 K). I don’t know what the Yankees’ plans are, but there has to be a lot of temptation to leave the 6’8″ 23-year-old in a bullpen role. He is thriving.
RHP Hayden Merda1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Merda “merely” has an ERA below 3.00 (2.96; 24.1 IP, 17 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 34 K). The Renegades’ pitching staff is deadly.

Tampa (29-24) (Defeated Jupiter, 6-1. They keep rolling along. Tonight, they went 9-for-9 stealing bases)

SS Roderick Arias: 1-for-4, 2 R, SB (13), BB, K
DH Edgleen Perez: 1-for-2, 2 R, SB (4), 3 BB
.215/.369/.239 in 206 PA (4 doubles, 16 RBI, 24 R, 4-for-5 SB, 18.4% BB, 21.8% K). Do I worry about the SLG? It doesn’t make me a  baseball savant to say that a .239 SLG is far from ideal. However, I am not concerned as he is a young developing catcher. The Yankees are doing the right thing by keeping him in the lineup every day.
C Engelth Urena1-for-5, RBI
3B Juan Matheus1-for-5, 2B (12), RBI, K
.271/.340/.341 in 197 PA.
RF Tyler Wilson: 1-for-3, RBI, 3 SB (14), 2 BB, K
LF Hans Montero1-for-5, 2 K
2B Owen Cobb0-for-3, R, 2 SB (10), CI, BB, 2 K
Cobb’s first game since May 29th. He is hitting .375/.420/.639 in 83 PA (6 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR, 16 RBI, 20 R, 10-for-12 SB, 7.2% BB, 20.5% K)
CF Marshall Toole: 2-for-3, 3B (5), RBI, R, SB (12), BB
.318/.422/.505 in 128 PA (7 doubles, 5 triples, 1 HR, 15 RBI, 26 R, 12-for-13 SB, 14.8% BB, 22.7% K). He is 5-for-8 with a double, triple, homer, eight RBI, and five walks in three June games. I don’t know what will become of him, but he is a fun prospect to follow.
1B Josue Gonzalez1-for-4, 2B (5), RBI

RHP Gage Ziehl: (W, 3-2)  6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, HR
3.79 ERA (38 IP, 35 H, 18 R, 16 ER, 6 BB, 31 K, 3 HR). Last three starts: 16 IP, 15 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 17 K
RHP Sean Hermann1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
142 ERA (25.1 IP, 14 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 20 BB, 22 K). I know I have said it many times, but it is worth repeating that many of those walks were in the first month of the season (15 in 12.1 IP).
RHP Chris Veach1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
The changeup specialist hit 93.6 MPH with his sinker (changeup averaged 75.3 MPH). Season: 1.29 ERA (21 IP, 15 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 12 BB, 34 K)
RHP Brady Kirtner1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K

FCL (12-12) (Lost to the Blue Jays, 14-11, in ten wild innings. They ran out of pitchers in the 9th, trying to use position players to close out a 5-run lead. That didn’t work. Another position player allowed three runs in the 10th. That’s the FCL for ya)

CF Isael Arias1-for-6, 2B (6), RBI, R, SB (8), 3 K
1B Manuel Palencia3-for-4, RBI, BB
Last six games: 13-for-25 with four doubles, a triple, and a home run.
3B-2B Luis Escudero1-for-3, 3 R, SB (7), 2 BB
2B-P-LF Santiago Gomez1-for-4, 2 R, HBP, K
You know things were crazy when a position player went from second base to the mound to left field.
LF Gabriel Lara3-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 R
I am not sure why Lara was pulled from the game.  He is hitting .370/.433/.667 in 30 PA and is 8-for-12 in his last four games.
  LF-RF Wilson Rodriguez1-for-2, HR (1), RBI, R
The 20-year-old launches his first home run since 2023 (he has played in only 32 career games)
SS-3B Kevin Verde1-for-5, R, SB (4), 2 K
RF-C Luis Puello2-for-5, 3 RBI, R, K
DH Gabriel Terrero0-for-4, RBI, K
  SS Dexters Peralta0-for-0, SF, RBI

RHP Justin Lange: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
We don’t get pitch counts in the FCL, but it doesn’t matter. Lange is back and is still young enough to be intriguing.
RHP Carson Coleman1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
One of the reasons why they ran out of pitchers is that they began the game with two pitchers on rehab stints.
RHP Chance Nolan0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Their third pitcher, the quarterback-turned-reliever, is also on a strict limit right now.
RHP Omar Gonzalez3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 3 K
At least Gonzalez tried to give them some length.
RHP Hansel Rosario1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K

DSL Yankees (0-2) (Losing to DSL Miami, 7-4, in the bottom of the 5th. The game was suspended due to rain. They will try to finish it on June 17th)

SS Mani Cedeno0-for-1, HBP, K
DH Francisco Vilorio1-for-2, R, K
3B Richard Matic1-for-2, 2B (1), RBI, R, K
LF Isaias Castillo1-for-2, RBI, R, 3 SB (3)

DSL Bombers (1-1) (Lead DSL Colorado, 7-3, in the bottom of the 7th. This game was suspended due to rain. They will try to finish it on June 17th)

CF Ruben Castillo0-for-2, 2 R, 2 SB (2), BB, K
The DSL Castillos put on a running display today!
C Queni Pineda1-for-4, RBI
2B Juan Torres1-for-2, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 R, BB

LHP Junior Tavera3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Last year, as a 17-year-old, Tavera put up an 8.82 ERA in 16.1 IP with a 22/21 K/BB.

Yankees MILB 5/30: Tyler Hardman Homers Twice (Again)

There’s nothing I can offer you.

Injury Log

Scranton (24-28) (Defeated Worcester, 3-1)

C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, 2 K
Rodriguez is 4-for-22 in his last five games (one of those games was a 3-hit effort).
LF Dominic Smith2-for-3, R, BB
RF Everson Pereira2-for-4, R, 2 K
.274/.377/.521 in 138 PA (2 doubles, 9 HR, 23 RBI, 32 R, 5-for-5 SB, 13.0% BB, 32.6% K). Pereira isn’t perfect, but we need him to stay healthy in case someone is needed in MLB. They have outfield “depth” to some extent, but a healthy Pereira would be their best bet.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-2, R, 2 BB
DH Alex Jackson1-for-4, 2B (3), 3 RBI
Jackson’s 3-run double in the bottom of the 8th gave Scranton the lead.
3B Jose Rojas1-for-4, K
  3B Jake Gatewood0-for-0
SS Braden Shewmake1-for-4
2B Andrew Velazquez0-for-4, K
CF Ismael Munguia1-for-3

RHP Anthony DeSclafani4 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
RHP Jake Woodford: (W, 2-2)  5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
The two MLB veterans combine to allow one run while scattering ten hits. Woodford has a 4.54 ERA in 39.2 IP (45 H, 23 R, 20 ER, 6 HR, 17 BB, 39 K). So far, the Yankees haven’t needed to dig too deeply into their starting pitching depth, which is surprising when you lose Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil before the season and Marcus Stroman (don’t laugh) during the season. If they ever need to, DeSclafani and Woodford are somewhere on the depth chart.

Somerset (23-25) (Lost to Akron, 8-7. They loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the 9th and didn’t score. My high school coach would make us run the bleachers for two hours after such an effort)

2B George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-3, R, SB (7), 2 BB, K
Lombard Jr. continues to show off his plate discipline. It’s impressive for a 19-year-old (we won’t be able to call him a teenager much longer – he turns 20 on Monday)
DH Spencer Jones0-for-2, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Jones is hitting .237 with a .940 OPS (4 doubles, 9 HR, 17 RBI, 21 R, 7-for-9 SB, 18.3% BB, 35.8% K)
   PH Antonio Gomez0-for-0, BB
Yes, the Yankees are strict about players coming back from injury. Even down a run in the 9th, they weren’t going to allow Jones to bat.
   PR Max Burt0-for-0
C Rafael Flores0-for-4, BB
3B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, R, HBP, K
RF Brennen Davis1-for-5, 3 K
CF Garrett Martin: 1-for-5, 2B (8), 2 RBI, 2 K
1B Tyler Hardman2-for-5, 2 HR (8), 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 K
Hardman hits two home runs for the second day in a row.  He is giving us a glimpse of the masher he was a few years ago (before injury).
LF Cole Gabrielson1-for-4, 3B (1), R, 2 K
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, RBI, 2 K

RHP Trystan Vrieling2.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Vrieling’s first two appearances since coming back from his rehab stint were scoreless (7.1 innings). I am not going to worry about a random rough evening when he is essentially in “late spring training” mode.
RHP Jordany Ventura1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Mason Vinyard: (L, 1-2)  0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
LHP Will Brian1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Ryan Anderson2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Cole Ayers1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (30-18) (Lost to Wilmington, 4-0)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-4
“Is Roc Riggio a legitimate prospect?” Yes, but with limitations. He won’t be versatile, remaining anchored at second base. His ability to hit for average at advanced levels will be tested. However, although he stands 5’9″, he has legitimate pull power, which would be enticing in Yankee Stadium. His ability to take walks further helps his profile, as he should be able to maintain a decent OBP.  Is there room for, let’s say, a .220/.310/.420 MLB second baseman with 10-15 stolen bases? This is where you can run into an issue with his defensive profile, as his bat may scream “solid utility guy!’ while his fielding screams “You can’t play him anywhere but second base!” Yes, tweener potential exists. We’ll learn more when he gets to Double-A, likely later this season.
LF Brendan Jones1-for-3, BB
Surprising to see Jones reach base twice and not steal a base!
DH Jace Avina0-for-4, K

RHP Josh Grosz: (L, 3-3)  7 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Grosz needed only 86 pitches to record 21 outs. This is his second straight start in which he tossed seven innings without exceeding 90 pitches.  Season: 3.86 ERA (42 IP, 32 H, 22 R, 18 ER, 3 HR, 13 BB, 51 K).  Going strictly by Pipeline rankings, Grosz is the least heralded of the *seven* starting pitchers at this level. If Grosz is the lowest-rated prospect on your staff, you must have something good.
RHP Tyrone Yulie1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.24 ERA (16.2 IP, 14 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 22 K)
RHP Sebastian Keane1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
1.50 ERA (12 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 7 BB, 12 K)

Tampa (26-22) (Defeated Fort Myers, 9-3)

SS Roderick Arias1-for-5, RBI, 2 K
.161/.325/.280 in 117 PA (8 doubles, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 12 R, 11-for-14 SB, 18.8% BB, 29.9% K). Even though his 2024 was uneven, he did show some power (42 extra-base hits, including 13 home runs). This is beyond being concerning.
CF Brian Sanchez2-for-4, RBI, 2 SB (10), BB, 2 K
Sanchez is 5-for-14 with a pair of stolen bases since coming back from his 2-week injury.
C Edgleen Perez2-for-5, R, K
.217/.374/.245 in 182 PA. After an extended hot streak, he hit a little 0-for-13 slide entering tonight. His march through the system won’t be fast, as he is a 19-year-old catcher growing into his game. The Yankees have to keep throwing him out there.
DH Engelth Urena0-for-4, 2 R, BB, 2 K
RF Cam Eden: 3-for-5, 3B (1), RBI, 2 R, SB (1)
Eden is a good speed/defense depth piece. He is 164-for-185 (88.6%) stealing bases in his 456-game minor league career. He had a cup of coffee with the 2023 Blue Jays, but didn’t attempt a stolen base.
LF Dillon Lewis2-for-5, 2 RBI, R, SB (13)
.238/.316/.458 in 187 PA (9 doubles, 2 triples, 8 HR, 28 RBI, 31 R, 13-for-14 SB, 9.6% BB, 27.8% K). The 21-year-old has tools to work with.
3B Juan Matheus0-for-2, R, 2 SB (14), 2 BB, K
.286/.358/.354 in 173 PA. Power will not likely be a part of his game, which is why he has to refine his basestealing (14-for-19 this year; 52-for-74 in his career) to add to his potential value.
1B Tyler Wilson0-for-4, K
2B Austin Green1-for-3, RBI, 2 R, SB (6), HBP

RHP Gage Ziehl: (W, 2-2)  5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, HR
4.22 ERA (32 IP, 31 H, 17 R, 15 ER, 2 HR, 6 BB, 25 K). Ziehl has pitched well since coming back from Somerset, where he made one emergency start.
RHP Jack Sokol1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Cole Zaffiro2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Chris Veach1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
1.42 ERA (19 IP, 14 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 32 K). Veach touched 95 MPH with his sinker tonight. That is important, as his bread-and-butter is his changeup. If he can dial up that fastball into the 94-95 range consistently, he could become a Tommy Kahnle-like prospect. Never take my comparisons as absolutes.

FCL (9-11) (Defeated the Tigers, 8-5)

DH Willy Montero0-for-3
Montero is here on a rehab stint from Tampa. Last year for Tampa, he hit .244/.311/.355 in 486 PA (23 doubles, 2 triples, 7 HR, 58 RBI, 64 R, 15-for-16 SB).
CF Brando Mayea1-for-1
There was a dreaded “injury delay” on a force play at second base. Mayea was pulled from the game.
    LF Kevin Verde1-for-4, R, SB (3), K
C Manuel Palencia3-for-5, 2 2B (4), R
3B Luis Escudero1-for-3, 2 R, BB
RF Santiago Gomez2-for-3, RBI, 2 R, SB (9)
The 21-year-old is hitting .309/.375/.327 in 64 PA (9-for-10 SB)
1B Luis Puello1-for-3, HR (1), 3 RBI, R, BB, 2 K
Listed as a catcher, the 19-year-old has yet to play the position in 2025.
2B Gabriel Terrero3-for-3, 2B (2), 2 RBI, SB (4)
Terrero has 3-hit and 4-hit games this season (11 games played).

RHP Edinzo Marquez5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 2 HR
4.34 ERA (18.2 IP, 17 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 4 HR, 9 BB, 16 K)

Yankees MILB 5/11: A Day for Pitchers

Notes:

A quiet weekend for notes.

Injury Log

Scranton (19-18) (Rolled past Rochester, 12-0)

DH Jesus Rodriguez1-for-3, 3B (1), RBI, 3 R, 2 BB, K
Since promotion: .356/.479/.466 in 94 PA (3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 11 RBI, 20 R, 5-for-5 SB, 18 BB, 11 K). 20 runs in 21 games. His teammates must appreciate the RBI opportunities.
2B DJ LeMahieu1-for-4, RBI, R, CS (1), BB
LeMahieu is 12-for-27 (.444) on his rehab stint. I am unsure when the Yankees will bring him up from his rehab stint, but inserting him into the same picture as Aaron Judge and Juan Soto for the Subway Series will only add to the hype.
CF Everson Pereira0-for-4, RBI, 2 R, SB (3), BB, 2 K
.287/.376/.575 in 101 PA (1 double, 8 HR, 19 RBI, 24 R, 3-for-3 SB, 11.9% BB, 32.7% K). Like Rodriguez, he creates opportunities for his teammates, as his 24 runs have come in 24 games.
C Alex Jackson1-for-3, HR (4), SF, 4 RBI, R, BB, 2 K
Jackson has four home runs in his last eight games.
RF Bryan De La Cruz0-for-3, R, HBP, 2 K
1B Dominic Smith2-for-3, HR (4), SF, 3 RBI, R, K
Smith has homered in back-to-back games and is 10-for-28 (.357) in May.
LF Jose Rojas0-for-3, BB
3B Braden Shewmake1-for-4, R, SB (2)
SS Andrew Velazquez2-for-3, 2 R, 2 SB (9), BB

RHP Allan Winans (W, 1-0): 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
0.00 ERA (19 IP, 13 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 27 K). In the starting pitcher depth chart competition, it’s hard to deny that Winans has impressed the most. The lone negative is that this was the first time he went 5+ innings this season.
LHP Brent Headrick: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Jonathan Loaisiga1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
16 pitches/10 strikes. He has to be close.
RHP Jake Woodford2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.33 ERA (24.1 IP, 27 H, 12 R, 9 ER, 5 HR, 10 BB, 21 K). This is his first relief appearance in 2025.

Somerset (14-19) (Lost to Akron, 2-1)

SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-3, BB, K
4-for-21 since his promotion, with four walks and four strikeouts.
C Rafael Flores3-for-4, R
.290/.333/.504 in 104 PA (10 doubles, 6 HR, 24 RBI, 15 R, 3-for-3 SB, 6.4% BB, 31.2% K). I wouldn’t be surprised if Flores, Rule 5 eligible this winter, is traded this summer.
RF Garrett Martin0-for-4, 2 K
2B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, 2B (7), RBI, K
.269/.326/.471 in 129 PA (7 doubles, 1 triple, 5 HR, 17 RBI, 18 R, 6.2% BB, 18.6% K). He is on a 5-game hitting streak (7-for-21, 2 doubles, 3 RBI)
CF Grant Richardson0-for-4, 2 K
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-4, K
3B Alexander Vargas0-for-3, 2 K
LF Jared Wegner0-for-3, SB (2)
DH Antonio Gomez0-for-3, K
8-for-51 since his promotion (.157/.214/.176 with a double, four walks, and 19 strikeouts)

RHP Bailey Dees5.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K
4.82 ERA (28 IP, 27 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 5 HR, 16 BB, 33 K). Solid performance for Dees, who hopefully can get on a roll.
RHP Indigo Diaz0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Luis Pacheco1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Kelly Austin (L, 1-1): 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, HR
His season won’t be perfect: 1.69 ERA (10.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 9 K)

Hudson Valley (23-9) (Defeated Wilmington, 9-1. They take 5-out-of-6 in the series by a 45-10 margin)

CF Brendan Jones0-for-2, 2 R, SB (14), 3 BB, K
.248/.360/.407 in 136 PA (5 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 26 R, 14-for-17 SB, 13.97% BB, 17.6% K). He’s doing what you want leadoff hitters to do.
2B Roc Riggio1-for-3, HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB
Riggio won’t overwhelm you with power, but he has sneaky pop (43 extra-base hits in 2024 (27 doubles, 5 triples, 11 HR)).
3B Parks Harber1-for-4, HR (2), RBI, R, BB, 2 K
Since promotion: .333/.396/.521 in 53 PA. He is on a 7-game hitting streak (11-for-32, 3 doubles, 1 HR)
LF Coby Morales1-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RBI, R, BB, 2 K
C Omar Martinez0-for-5, 3 K
.264/.364/.445 in 129 PA. Martinez is 0-for-8 since his insane hitting streak, which is as baseball as baseball can be.
DH Jose Colmenares1-for-3, 2B (3), RBI, R, SB (3), CS (1), 2 BB, K
SS Brenny Escanio1-for-3, HR (3), 2 RBI, R, BB
1B Josh Moylan0-for-4, 2 K
RF Anthony Hall1-for-3, 2B (3), R, BB, 2 K
Hall is on a 5-game hitting streak (6-for-20)

RHP Bryce Cunningham (W, 4-1): 6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
1.98 ERA (36.1 IP, 28 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 38 K). Cunningham continues to cruise (he allowed five runs in the first inning on 4/13. Beyond that, nobody has touched him)
RHP Chris Kean0.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
1.32 ERA (13.2 IP, 12 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 12 K)
RHP Huey Morrill1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Tony Rossi:  1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Between here and Tampa: 12.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 18 K. I think Somerset will call his name sometime this season.

Tampa (14-19) (Lost to Daytona, 2-1)

C Edgleen Perez0-for-3, BB
.202/.377/.234 in 122 PA (3 doubles, 10 RBI, 13 R, 3-for-3 SB, 19.7% BB, 22.95% K). I don’t expect an 18-year-old to show off big power in Low-A. There is a good chance he will be here for two seasons.
LF Dillon Lewis0-for-4, 2 K
.200/.273/.382 in 121 PA (6 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 17 R, 7-for-8 SB, 8.3% BB, 28.9% K).
3B Juan Matheus1-for-4, SB (9)
.237/.318/.301 in 110 PA (6 doubles, 15 RBI, 9 R, 9-for-13 SB, 11.8% BB, 21.8% K).
2B Austin Green0-for-2, SB (4), 2 BB
DH Josue Gonzalez0-for-4, K
RF Tyler Wilson0-for-3, K
1B Hans Montero1-for-3, 2B (3), CS (2)
CF Marshall Toole1-for-2, 3B (3), R, BB
.292/.387/.415 in 75 PA (2 doubles, 3 triples, 5 RBI, 12 R, 7-for-7 SB, 13.3% BB, 28% K).  He has six multi-hit efforts in his last 12 games.
SS Owen Cobb0-for-3, RBI, K
Cobb’s .500 pace is over!  He is now 11-for-25.

RHP Gage Ziehl6.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
4.08 ERA (17.2 IP, 17 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 0 HR, 3 BB, 9 K). This was his first start since making an emergency start for Somerset. Hopefully, he can build off this effort.
RHP Cade Austin0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Brady Kirtner (L, 2-1): 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, HR
Kirtner struck out four in a row before allowing a walk-off HR. Season: 1.93 ERA (18.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 7 BB, 18 K)

FCL (4-2)

Yankees MILB 4/13: Spencer Jones Homers Twice

Notes:

I have nothing fun to report.

Scranton (9-5) (Swept a doubleheader over Rochester)

Game 1 (Walked it off in a 3-2 win)

DH Cooper Hummel: 0-for-2, BB, K
   PH T.J. Rumfield0-for-0, R, BB
2B Jorbit Vivas1-for-3, RBI, BB
Vivas walked it off in the bottom of the 7th.
LF Everson Pereira0-for-3, 2 K
.250/.326/.350 in 46 PA (10.9% BB, 36.9% K).
RF Ismael Munguia0-for-2, R, BB
1B Dominic Smith0-for-3
3B Jose Rojas1-for-3, HR (2), RBI, R
C Ronaldo Hernandez1-for-2, BB
SS Andrew Velazquez1-for-3, 2B (2), RBI
CF Duke Ellis0-for-3, K

RHP Zach Messinger3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
4.63 ERA (11.2 IP, 13 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 9 K). One thing that Messinger limits is long balls (9 HR in 150 IP last season). He can work his way to MLB this season, but remember that A) the Yankees didn’t invite him to spring training and B) he was exposed in the Rule 5 draft and nobody took him, despite some upper-level success.
RHP Yerry De Los Santos1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
LHP Tyler Matzek1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Matzek topped out at 95.9 MPH. At 34 years old, he can still bring it.
RHP Geoff Hartlieb (W, 1-0): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Game 2 (Won, 8-0)

RF Ismael Munguia2-for-2, 3 R, SB (3), 2 BB
Munguia is hitting .314 with a .773 OPS (2 doubles, 3 RBI, 10 R, 5 BB, 5 K)
C Jesus Rodriguez: 1-for-2, RBI, 2 R, HBP, BB
Rodriguez was promoted here today, but it is likely because they needed a body for the doubleheader. I imagine he will be back in an Uber to Somerset tonight.
3B Jorbit Vivas3-for-4, 2B (3), 3 RBI, R, CS (2)
Vivas is hitting .306 with a .900 OPS (3 doubles, 2 HR, 14 RBI, 9 R, 14.5% BB, 6.5% K).  He had a 16.7% K last season.
1B T.J. Rumfield: 1-for-2, 2B (5), 3 RBI, HBP, BB
There certainly can come a time when Rumfield (5 doubles, 3 HR, 12 RBI in 14 games) asks what more he needs to do. The good news is that, eventually, the Yankees have to add him to the 40-man or risk losing him to minor league free agency.
LF Dominic Smith1-for-4
DH Jose Rojas0-for-3, SF, RBI, 2 K
2B Andrew Velazquez0-for-3
SS Braden Shewmake2-for-3, 2B (1), R
CF Duke Ellis1-for-3, R, 2 SB (2), K

RHP Sean Boyle: (W, 1-2)  5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
The 28-year-old Boyle has toiled in the system since 2018. He would be a fun story if he made it to MLB, but he has to earn that. Due to injuries, he was limited to 56 total innings in 2023-2024 (155.1 innings in 2022).
RHP Wilking Rodriguez1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
LHP Brent Headrick1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Somerset (4-5) (Lost to Reading, 8-7)

2B Dylan Jasso2-for-5, 3B (1), 2 RBI, 2 R
Jasso’s first professional game at 2B. Are they trying to add some utility to his profile (normally plays 1B/3B)?
CF Spencer Jones: 3-for-5, 2 HR (3), 4 RBI, 2 R, SB (3), 2 K
Jones has four career multi-HR games. He is hitting .290/.421/.613 (1 double, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 8 R, 3-for-3 SB, 15.8% BB, 36.8% K)
C Rafael Flores0-for-5, 2 K
.219/.324/.438 in 37 PA. He is in a little 1-for-15 slide.
RF Garrett Martin0-for-4, K
1B Tyler Hardman2-for-4, 2B (4), SB (2), K
Hardman has doubled in three straight games.
LF Grant Richardson1-for-4, K
DH Jared Wegner0-for-4, 2 K
3B Jake Gatewood: 3-for-4, 2 2B (5), 3B (1), 2 R
Gatewood is turning on the extra-base hit machine (two doubles yesterday, two doubles and a triple today).
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-3, RBI, R, BB, K

RHP Trent Sellers4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
Sellers had a strong first season in 2024.  It will be interesting to see how he fares in Somerset.
RHP Jordany Ventura1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Harrison Cohen1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
RHP Luis Pacheco0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Danny Watson (L, 0-1): 1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2 HR
A rough day at the office – have to shake it off.

Hudson Valley (5-4) (Lost to Brooklyn, 8-1)

CF Brendan Jones0-for-4, 4 K
Toss this game out and move on to the next.
SS George Lombard Jr.2-for-4, K
Back-to-back multi-hit efforts. The power hasn’t shown up yet at this level (one extra-base hit in 8 games; 9 in 37 games going back to last year), but he is otherwise doing well for a teenager (.286/.417/.357).
LF Jackson Castillo1-for-3, BB, K
.276/.400/.379 in 35 PA.
CF Jace Avina0-for-3, HBP, K
C Omar Martinez0-for-4, K
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, R
Colmenares (23) hit 7 HR in 26 games for Low-A Tampa last year.
1B Coby Morales0-for-3, BB
3B Brenny Escanio0-for-3, 2 K
DH Kiko Romero0-for-3

RHP Bryce Cunningham6 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, HR
Not as smooth as his professional debut, but to his credit, he allowed one run after a 5-run first inning. He owns a 13/1 K/BB in 11 innings.
RHP Huey Morrill1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Hayden Merda1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (5-4) (Use a 4-run first to knock off Fort Myers, 4-2)

C Edgleen Perez0-for-4, R, BB, K
CF Brian Sanchez2-for-5, 2B (3), 2 K
.281/.361/.500 in 36 PA (3 doubles, 2 triples, 3 RBI, 4 BB, 7 K). He’s only 20,
DH Engelth Urena1-for-3, R, SB (2), CS (1), 2 BB, K
A lot of excitement over this kid’s bat and he showed some of that potential in the FCL last year. Like everyone, he has to prove it in a full-season league. On the positive side, he is taking his walks (9 in eight games).
3B Parks Harber2-for-4, 3B (1), HR (2), 3 RBI, R, 2 K
Harber’s home run was crushed (399 feet/107.9 MPH). Four of Harber’s eight hits have gone for extra bases (1 double, 1 triple, 2 HR). He has ten RBI in nine games.
LF Tyler Wilson0-for-4, 4 K
RF Dillon Lewis2-for-4, HR (1), RBI, R, 2 K
Speaking of crushed homers, Lewis’s home run was hit 383 feet at 109.3 MPH.
2B Hans Montero1-for-4, K
SS Juan Matheus0-for-2, 2 SB (2), 2 BB
Matheus has five walks and two strikeouts in six games (94 BB, 84 K in 115 career games). He also has 40 career stolen bases (though he has been caught 18 times)
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-3, SB (2), BB, K

RHP Gage Ziehl4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Professional debut for the 21-year-old drafted in the 4th round last year (Miami). He threw 50% cutters (maxed 92.7), 24% 4-seamers (maxed 94.4), 24% sliders, and one sinker. For Miami in 2024, he went 5-3 with a 3.87 ERA and 89/28 K/BB over 100 innings. The Yankees system, seen as mid-pack or lower by most, can take a significant step forward if their 2024 draft bears some pitching fruit. It is their specialty. While it is too early to conclude anything, their drafted arms are off to good starts.
RHP Brandon Decker (W, 1-0): 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
Decker’s first professional win. He relies more on an assortment of pitches than power, though he did top out at 93.3 with his sinker today.
RHP Tony Rossi1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Rossi is already 25 and will be fast-tracked if he shows anything. His sinker reached 93.6 MPH today.
RHP Chris Veach (S, 1): 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
Veach threw 71% change-ups and 14% curveballs. Pitchers who rely on breaking balls/changeups often can confuse batters at the lower levels, even if those pitchers aren’t elite, so we’ll see how it translates as he moves up.
