Hudson Valley (28-15) (Allowed five runs in the 9th (yikes) to lose to Winston-Salem, 5-4)

DH Roc Riggio0-for-2, R, HBP, 2 BB
.275/.456/.686 in 68 PA. His walk percentage in 22.1. He spent all of April on the injured list so I don’t mind him being here. Eventually, they will need to consider Somerset.
RF Brendan Jones: 2-for-5, HR (4), RBI, R, K
.237/.346/.382 in 182 PA. Jones hit three home runs in a 5-game period in April before going on a 24-game homerless streak. Baseball!

2.74 ERA (42.2 IP, 25 H, 15 R, 13 ER, 0 HR, 21 BB, 47 K). The walks are a little high but he is offsetting that with solid strikeout and ground ball rates (52.9% GB entering tonight)

Tampa (23-21) (Held off Dunedin, 4-3)

DH Edgleen Perez0-for-5, 2 K
C Engelth Urena3-for-5, 2B (7), HR (5), RBI, 2 R, K
Urena follows up a 4-hit game with a 3-hit effort. His power potential comes out from time to time, and he has three doubles and a homer in his last two games.  Season: .232/.359/.377 in 184 PA (7 doubles, 5 HR, 19 RBI, 30 R, 14.1% BB, 19.6% K).
CF Dillon Lewis1-for-3, HR (7), 2 RBI, R, BB

SS Juan Matheus0-for-4, 2 K
After an insane hot streak, Matheus is 0-for-11 in his last three games. He is hitting .281/.348/.348 in 158 plate appearances.

Wilson follows up a 4-hit game with a 3-hit effort. In his last four games, he is 10-for-17, raising his triple slash from .224/.307/.261 to .265/.339/.351.

The video game numbers have predictably dwindled, though he is still hitting .373/.413/.657 in 76 PA.
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-3, BB, K

RHP Gage Ziehl: (W, 1-2)  5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K
Ziehl’s first professional win. The seven strikeouts are a personal best.
RHP Gus Hughes1.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Cade Austin1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Sean Hermann (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Hermann’s first career save as his transition to the bullpen continues to pay dividends: 1.61 ERA (22.1 IP, 14 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 18 BB, 22 K). This was his 8th straight scoreless appearance. The walk rate is high, but most of that was in April. In May, he has allowed three walks over 10 innings.

FCL (8-8) (Pulverized the Phillies again, 15-3. They have outscored the Phillies 30-3 the last two days)

LF Brando Mayea2-for-5, 2B (4), 2 RBI, 3 R, BB, K
.295/.377/.541 in 70 PA. Mayea is second in the FCL with 17 runs.

Tick tock. Get him to Scranton already.
RF Isael Arias: 1-for-4, R, SB (4), BB
C Ediel Rivera0-for-3, R, SB (4), 2 BB, K
Always pay attention to the catchers in the Yankees system.
SS Dexters Peralta1-for-5, RBI, 2 K
Peralta received a $500,000 signing bonus during the 2024 international signing period. He is 2-for-20 so far this year after hitting .219/.320/.325 with 26 stolen bases in 30 attempts in 46 DSL games last year.
1B Manuel Palencia2-for-4, 2B (2), RBI, 2 R, K
2B Luis Escudero2-for-4, HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 R

Coleman’s second rehab appearance.
RHP Greysen Carter (W, 1-0): 3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 8 BB, 1 K
I wish I could put “Yikes!” in big, bold, red, flashing font. But he gets the win!
RHP Jose Martinez1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Martinez (20) now has a 79/13 K/BB in 69 career innings.

Yankees MILB 5/23: An Offensive Explosion

Notes:

Nothing to see here.

Injury Log

Scranton (22-25) (Doubled up Nashville, 10-5)

DH Jesus Rodriguez3-for-4, RBI, SB (8), CS (4), BB, K
Rodriguez extends his hitting streak to 13 (seven multi-hit efforts).  He is hitting .389 with a .970 OPS since his promotion (44 hits in 30 games). All he does is hit, hit, hit (I seem to type that often, eh?)
LF Dominic Smith1-for-5, HR (7), 3 RBI, R, K
Smith has six homers in 18 May games.
C Alex Jackson1-for-3, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Jackson has a 1.115 OPS in 21 games.
1B Jose Rojas: 3-for-4, 2 2B (12), 2 RBI, R, BB, K
RF Bryan De La Cruz2-for-5, 2B (4), RBI, R, 2 K
SS Braden Shewmake0-for-5, 2 K
2B Andrew Velazquez0-for-3, RBI, R, SAC, K
CF Ismael Munguia0-for-4, R
3B Jake Gatewood1-for-4, R, SB (2), K

RHP Allan Winans: (W, 3-0)  5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Winans finally allows an earned run. Season: 0.32 ERA (28 IP, 20 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 36 K)
RHP Leonardo Pestana1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Jon Olsen: 1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Geoff Hartlieb1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Clayton Beeter1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
I wonder when Beeter will get the call to MLB. The Yankees seem to like Yerry De los Santos, but Beeter has more upside.

Somerset (20-21) (Defeated New Hampshire, 9-6)

2B George Lombard Jr.1-for-5, 2B (1), R, BB, 3 K
Lombard Jr. earns his first Double-A extra-base hit.
C Rafael Flores3-for-6, 2B (11), RBI, 2 R
.296/.347/.531 in 176 PA (11 doubles, 9 HR, 31 RBI, 23 R, 4-for-4 SB, 6.8% BB, 28.98% K). Keith Law’s opinion of Flores sees him as a platoon bat in MLB. He doesn’t see a full-time catcher, but the Yankees are stubborn about keeping players behind the plate for as long as possible. Some of that is definitely for trade value purposes.
CF Garrett Martin2-for-3, HR (5), 2 RBI, 4 R, HBP, BB
Martin ends his 18-game homerless streak. He has 30 doubles, 17 homers, and 24 stolen bases (27 attempts) in 141 career games.
DH Brennen Davis1-for-3, HR (1), 2 RBI, R, SB (1), 2 BB, K
Davis’s rehab is over, and he was assigned here. A no-risk flyer on a once highly-regarded kid. We’ll see how it goes.
LF Cole Gabrielson1-for-3, 2 RBI, K
  LF Grant Richardson0-for-2, 2 K
1B Tyler Hardman3-for-5, 2 2B (9), 2 RBI, K
Hardman’s third straight multi-hit effort.
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, BB
RF Jared Wegner0-for-3, CS (2), 2 BB, 2 K
3B Max Burt0-for-4, R, 2 SB (5), BB

RHP JT Brubaker2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
Brubaker’s rehab was moved here today. Your reminder that, unlike with Scott Effross and Clayton Beeter, Brubaker doesn’t have any options left.
RHP Brendan Beck (W, 3-1): 5.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 2 HR
2.67 ERA (33.2 IP, 24 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 37 K).  Beck’s appearances are widely spread out (first time we’ve seen him since 5/15).  Given his history of injuries, this makes sense.
RHP Indigo Diaz (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (28-14) (Walloped Winston-Salem, 10-1. Hudson Valley has outscored them 23-3 over the last two nights)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-5, 2B (4), 2 R, BB, K
Riggio has a 7-game hitting streak (11-for-27). He has three doubles, a triple, and four home runs during the streak.
CF Brendan Jones: 2-for-4, 2B (6), 2 RBI, 2 R, SB (17), 2 BB
.231/.345/.361 in 177 PA (6 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR, 22 RBI, 32 R, 17-for-20 SB, 14.1% BB, 17.5% K). There is an interesting prospect bubbling under the surface here.
1B Coby Morales1-for-6, RBI, R, 2 K
DH Parks Harber4-for-5, 2B (6), 4 RBI, R, BB
Harber is hitting better here than in Low-A, though with fewer walks. He is hitting .368/.422/.592 in 83 PA here after hitting .304/.422/.551 in 83 PA for Tampa. He has three 3+ hit efforts in his last five games, including a pair of 4-hit efforts. I am not here to spread bullcrap – he is doing what you want college bats to do at the lower levels and it could be meaningless. However, it isn’t meaningless for him as this will get him to Double-A.
LF Jace Avina2-for-2, 2B (8), SF, RBI, 3 BB
.288/.418/.441 in 141 PA.
SS Jose Colmenares0-for-6
Colmenares is simply saving his hits for when the team needs them.
3B Josh Moylan1-for-4, BB, K
C Tomas Frick0-for-2, SF, RBI, 2 R, HBP, BB, K
RF Anthony Hall1-for-4, 2 R, BB, 2 K

RHP Josh Grosz: (W, 3-2)  7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, HR
Grosz was efficient tonight, needing only 88 pitches to record 21 outs. Season: 3.60 ERA (35 IP, 28 H, 18 R, 14 ER, 3 HR, 12 BB, 45 K). Last three starts: 18.2 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 23 K.
RHP Sebastian Keane1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
1.64 ERA (11 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 12 K). He hasn’t allowed a run in seven straight appearances.
RHP Matt Keating1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
2.25 ERA (12 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 9 K)

Tampa (22-21) (Lost a slugfest to Dunedin, 13-9)

SS Roderick Arias0-for-4, R, SB (10), BB, 3 K
.173/.337/.296 in 101 PA (7 doubles, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 12 R, 10-for-12 SB, 18.8% BB, 28.7% K).
C Edgleen Perez2-for-5, R
Perez is 19-for-69 (.275; 3 doubles, 8 RBI, 11 R, 14 BB, 14 K) in May. He is hitting .232/.391/.264 in 161 PA.
CF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, K
Sanchez’s first game since May 10th.
  CF Marshall Toole0-for-2, R, K
DH Engelth Urena4-for-5, 2 2B (6), RBI, 3 R
This is his second career 4-hit effort. Known as an intriguing bat prospect, Urena has struggled this year. Hopefully, this gets him going. Season: .219/.352/.342 in 179 PA (6 doubles, 4 HR, 18 RBI, 28 R, 4-for-5 SB, 14.5% BB, 19.6% K).
LF Dillon Lewis3-for-5, 2B (9), RBI, 2 R, 2 SB (11), K
Lewis is 22-for-73 (.301; 5 doubles, 2 triples, 5 HR, 18 RBI, 19 R, 5-for-5 SB) in May.  Overall, he is hitting .232/.305/.437 in 167 PA.
3B Juan Matheus0-for-5, RBI, K
RF Tyler Wilson: 4-for-5, 2B (4), HR (3), 4 RBI, R, K
Wilson’s first career 4-hit game. Last year’s 8th-round pick is hitting .252/.329/.340 in 164 PA.
2B Owen Cobb0-for-4, HBP, 2 K
1B Hans Montero0-for-4, 2 K

RHP Brandon Decker1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
Decker’s first career start. I don’t know if this is the start of a transition to the rotation or if they wanted him to open the game for some other reason. In college, he was used as a starter and reliever.  Season: 1.93 ERA (18.2 IP, 16 H, 9 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 20 K)
RHP Cole Zaffiro2.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, HR
LHP Tanner Bauman: (L, 1-4)  2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
RHP Jack Sokol1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Brady Kirtner1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
2.25 ERA (24 IP, 14 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 27 K)

FCL (7-8) (Phlasted the Phillies, 15-0. The 4-team division that keeps playing each other is ruled by the Tigers and Blue Jays, with the Yankees in striking range. The Phillies are 4-11 with the division’s lone negative run differential)

DH Cam Eden1-for-4, 2B (1), 3 RBI, SB (3), BB, 2 K
Eden is only 3-for-20 on his rehab stint, but how long does a 27-year-old need to be here?
CF Brando Mayea2-for-5, 3B (1), 2 R, SB (4), 2 K
.286/.365/.536 in 64 PA (7.8% BB; 25% K).
LF Wilson Rodriguez2-for-4, 2 RBI, R, K
C Ediel Rivera2-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, 3 R, K
Rivera’s first professional home run. The 19-year-old is 9-for-35 with three doubles and a home run.
3B Luis Escudero2-for-5, RBI, 3 R, SB (4)
SS Kevin Verde2-for-4, SF, 3 RBI, R, K
1B John Cristino2-for-3, 2 RBI, R, SB (1), HBP, K
4-for-11 with three walks and two strikeouts.
2B Santiago Gomez0-for-3, SF, 2 RBI, R

RHP Edinzo Marquez4.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K
The 20-year-old owns a 4.05 ERA. (13.1 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 11 K)
RHP Mariano Salomon (W, 3-0): 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
0.87 ERA (10.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 12 K). Any reliever with the first name “Mariano” gets my eyes.
RHP Chance Nolan0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Alexis Paulino1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Control has been an issue for the 22-year-old (84 in 90 career innings). This season, he owns a 14/3 K/BB over 7.2 IP. Progress!

CF Dillon Lewis: 3-for-3, 2B (7), HR (5), 2 RBI, 3 R, BB

Yankees MILB 5/4: Rafael Flores Has a Big Day

Notes:

I receive this question often and typically answer it once per year: The Baseball Reference linker has a mind of its own when it comes to linking players with the same name. Is it weird that the linker matches Spencer Jones to a 25-year-old graduated Washington State left-handed pitcher who posted a 6.52 career ERA? Yes.  If he were named Dennis Putter, his page would never be seen, so good for him.  I could manually “fix” it, but I don’t think it is worth it.

Speaking of Jones, he was scratched from today’s lineup for Somerset. I don’t have a reason why. Jones missed time last April due to neck stiffness. That didn’t cost him much time. Hopefully, whatever is ailing him today won’t cost him much time either.

Outfielder Christopher Familia was sent back to the Development List for Somerset. That is not a good sign. His moment in the sun is likely fading.

RHP Gage Ziehl was promoted from Tampa to Somerset to make the start this afternoon. This is undoubtedly a “we need an arm” situation.

Injury Log

Scranton (16-16) (Defeated Syracuse, 4-2)

3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, BB
After spending all of his time at C/DH since his promotion, Scranton finally takes advantage of his versatility. His insane hitting streak ends, but he does add to his on-base streak (he has reached base in all 17 of his Scranton games and 20 straight games overall)
DH Everson Pereira1-for-3, BB, K
.284/.357/.541 in 84 PA (1 double, 6 HR, 15 RBI, 15 R, 2-for-2 SB, 9.5% BB, 33.3% K)
1B Dominic Smith1-for-3, R, BB, K
RF Jose Rojas0-for-4
LF Bryan De La Cruz1-for-3, R, BB
2-for-10 since the Yankees claimed him.
C Alex Jackson: 2-for-3, 2B (1), 3B (1), 2 RBI, 2 R, BB
Baseball is so interesting – Jackson has been a decent minor league hitter throughout his career, especially in the power department (he once hit 28 home runs in 85 Triple-A games). MLB? It never translates.
  C Ronaldo Hernandez0-for-0
2B Braden Shewmake1-for-3, 3B (1), RBI, BB
  2B Jake Gatewood0-for-0
SS Andrew Velazquez1-for-4, CS (1)
CF Ismael Munguia0-for-4, K
.228/.341/.342 in 140 PA. After a hot start (was still hitting .300/.393/.400 on April 20th), Munguia has slumped.

RHP Jake Woodford: (W, 1-1) 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, HR
3.63 ERA (22.1 IP, 26 H, 12 R, 9 ER, 5 HR, 10 BB, 19 K)
RHP McKinley Moore1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Kervin Castro1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
1.04 ERA (17.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 7 BB, 20 K). The 26-year-old with MLB experience is not a prospect, but pitching like this earns him a spot on the depth chart map. As a side note, during his 2021 debut season with the Giants, he compiled a 0.00 ERA in 13.1 innings. Remember that for a future Immaculate Grid (SF Giants, <3.00 season ERA).
RHP Colten Brewer (S, 2): 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, HR

Somerset (12-15) (Defeated Richmond, 5-4)

1B Dylan Jasso2-for-6
After a hot end to April, Jasso started May 0-for-12. Good to see him put an end to that little slide.
2B DJ LeMahieu1-for-3, R, BB
LeMahieu has played only second base during his rehab stint. With Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the shelf, I doubt that changes much.
  PH-2B Jose Colmenares0-for-0, R, HBP
C Rafael Flores3-for-5, 2B (9), HR (6), 2 RBI, 2 R
As of this writing, Flores is tied for the league lead in doubles and leads with 23 RBI. It’s tight, so those rankings may change.  He is hitting .292 with a .892 OPS and has hit safely in nine of his last ten games (including four multi-hit efforts)
RF Garrett Martin2-for-5, 2B (5), RBI, R, 2 K
9 of his 15 hits have gone for extra bases (5 doubles, 4 HR). He also has 13 walks in 88 PA (14.8%).
3B Alexander Vargas1-for-5
CF Cole Gabrielson0-for-5, 3 K
LF Jared Wegner0-for-4, BB, 2 K
DH Antonio Gomez3-for-4, 2B (1), BB
Gomez has struggled here. It’s nice to see him have a good game.
SS Max Burt2-for-5, RBI

RHP Gage Ziehl4 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, HR
Ziehl was thrown into a tough situation today. Judging him based on this start is foolish. He did put up a pair of zeroes after allowing four runs in the first two innings.
LHP Will Brian: (W, 2-0)  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Since promotion: 7.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 2 BB, 8 K
RHP Kelly Austin1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Activated off the IL today, Austin immediately strikes out the side. Season: 8.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K.
RHP Huey Morrill: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 0 K
RHP Cole Ayers (S, 1): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Ayers escapes a bases-loaded, 2-out jam in the 9th.

Hudson Valley (18-8)

Their game against Jersey Shore was postponed. That is one way to stop George Lombard Jr.

Tampa (11-16) (Destroyed Ft. Myers, 12-4. 12 runs, 15 hits, 10 stolen bases. They have scored 12 runs on back-to-back days after struggling to score runs for much of the season (entered today tied for last in the Florida State League in runs))

C Edgleen Perez1-for-4, RBI, R, SB (3), HBP, K
.183/.366/.197 in 93 PA. The Yankees are doing the right thing with Perez by keeping him at this level and giving up as many plate appearances as possible.
LF Brian Sanchez0-for-4, SF, RBI, K
DH Engelth Urena3-for-5, 2 2B (4), R, K
It hasn’t been consistent, but he has shown glimpses of the power people talk about. He is hitting .207/.349/.356 in 109 PA.
CF Dillon Lewis2-for-5, RBI, R, SB (7), 2 K
.198/.270/.341 in 100 PA.
3B Juan Matheus: 2-for-5, RBI, R, 2 SB (7), K
.250/.329/.333 in 85 PA (6 doubles, 13 RBI, 8 R, 7-for-10 SB, 11.8% BB, 21.2% K)
1B Tyler Wilson1-for-5, R, SB (8), 3 K
2B Austin Green1-for-3, SF, 3 RBI, R, 2 K
CF Marshall Toole: 2-for-3, 3B (1), 3 R, 2 SB (7), BB, K
.308/.400/.365 in 60 PA. If last year’s 15th-round pick can develop a hit tool, he can be disruptive with his speed as he is 15-for-17 stealing bases in his 32-game career. You can see him as a Brett Gardner-type, while recognizing that most Brett Gardner types don’t overachieve like Brett Gardner!
SS Owen Cobb: 3-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, 3 R, 3 SB (4)
Cobb is 13-for-13 stealing bases during his 22-game career.

RHP Jonathan Loaisiga1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
We don’t get pitch breakdowns when Tampa plays at home (because they aren’t playing in Steinbrenner Field this year), but we do see velocity readings. Loaisiga reached 96 MPH today. He generated a whopping nine whiffs on 19 pitches.
RHP Cole Zaffiro2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 HR
RHP Cade Austin: (W, 1-0) 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
4.09 ERA (11 IP, 12 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 9 K)
RHP Sean Hermann1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
2.57 ERA (15.2 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 17 BB, 16 K). Hermann is doing his usual ground ball thing, but oof – those walks. In his defense, he missed all of 2024 and is still likely on the comeback trail.
RHP Chris Veach1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
2.31 ERA (11.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 18 K). The first time he didn’t record a strikeout in his brief professional career.

Yankees MILB 4/19: Bryce Cunningham Dominates

Notes:

No news.

I have started a minor league injury log (below)

Injury Log

The Baseball Reference links stopped functioning at some point tonight, so some players don’t have their links (for now). You’ll live.

Scranton (11-8) (No-hit by Durham, 4-0)

3B Jorbit Vivas0-for-4
His 6-game hitting streak is snapped. His K% is down to 4.8%.
LF Everson Pereira0-for-3, 3 K
   PH Edinson Duran: 0-for-1
I am not sure why Duran pinch-hit with two outs in the 9th.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-3, 2 K
C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-2, BB
CF Ismael Munguia0-for-2, BB
DH Dominic Smith: 0-for-3
Smith, a candidate to replace Ben Rice if the injury required an IL stint (doesn’t seem likely) is an uninspiring 7-for-49 with a double and a homer.
SS Andrew Velazquez0-for-3
RF Grant Richardson0-for-3, 3 K
2B Max Burt0-for-2, BB, K

RHP Zach Messinger: (L, 0-1)  5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
4.32 ERA (16.2 IP, 19 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 0 HR, 10 BB, 17 K). He has allowed 9 HR in 166.2 IP over the last two seasons (0.49 HR/9)
RHP Eric Reyzelman: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
3.52 ERA (7.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 10 K)
RHP Geoff Hartlieb: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Rob Zastryzny: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Somerset (6-8) (Lost to Altoona, 2-1)

3B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, K
.275/.341/.450 in 44 PA (2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 10 R, 3 BB, 7 K)
CF Spencer Jones0-for-4, 3 K
.235/.361/.549 in 61 PA (1 double, 5 HR, 10 RBI, 11 R, 4-for-4 SB, 14.8% BB, 32.8% K).  In case you forgot, Jones had a 9.9% BB and 36.8% K in 2024.
DH Rafael Flores1-for-4, 2 K
.264/.339/.415 in 59 PA (2 doubles, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 3 R, 2-for-2 SB, 10.2% BB, 33.9% K).  The K% is high so far.
RF Garrett Martin0-for-2, R, 2 HBP
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-4, 2 K
SS Jake Gatewood1-for-3, 2B (7), RBI
.300/.391/.600 in 46 PA (7 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 9 R, 1-for-2 SB). Gatewood is not a prospect, but watching a 29-year-old still trying to realize his MLB dream is fun.
LF Jared Wegner0-for-3
2B Alexander Vargas1-for-3, SB (3), K
Vargas has reached base safely in 9 of his 10 games (hits in eight of those games).
C Antonio Gomez0-for-3, K

LHP Edgar Barclay4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
RHP Mason Vinyard1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 7 K
RHP Harrison Cohen: (L, 0-1)  1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
RHP Kelly Austin0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Hudson Valley (10-4) (Defeated Wilmington, 8-0)

LF Brendan Jones2-for-4, 2 R, SB (8)
.196/.339/.391 in 56 PA (1 double, 1 triple, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 12 R, 8-for-9 SB, 14.3% BB, 28.6% K). Jones’ combination of patience, speed, and defense allows you to envision his floor as a #4-#5 outfielder.
CF Jace Avina0-for-3, R, HBP, K
.205/.373/.231 in 51 PA. He hit 10+ HR in his first three professional campaigns.
C Omar Martinez: 2-for-4, 3 RBI, R
Martinez is off to a slow start (.240/.309/.280). Maybe this is the game that gets him going.
2B Jose Colmenares0-for-2, R, HBP, BB
3B Josh Moylan1-for-3, 2B (3), 2 RBI, R, SB (1), CS (1)
SS Brenny Escanio1-for-4, 2B (2), 2 RBI, R, K
1B Coby Morales2-for-4
C Tomas Frick1-for-4, K
RF Anthony Hall1-for-4, R, K
Hall has hit safely in five of his six games.

RHP Bryce Cunningham: (W, 2-1)  7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K
3.50 ERA (18 IP, 16 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 22 K). Cunningham allowed five runs in the first inning in his second start. While all stats count, that has thus far been his lone bad inning.
RHP Bryce Warrecker1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
4.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K. That is a strong start to his campaign.
RHP Tyrone Yulie1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Tampa (7-7) (Lost to St. Lucie, 4-3, in 12 innings)

SS Roderick Arias1-for-5, R, SB (6), 2 K
Arias has reached base safely in five straight games (4-game hitting streak). He has 3 extra-base hits (2 doubles, HR) and 3 stolen bases during this stretch.
CF Brian Sanchez1-for-5, 3 K
C Engelth Urena1-for-5, HR (3), RBI, R, K
Urena hit a game-tying HR in the top of the 9th.  He has homered three times in his last four games. As I keep saying, his power potential is real (14 HR in 63 career games).
3B Parks Harber1-for-5, RBI, SB (3), 2 K
Harber has an 8-game hitting streak (10-for-29)
1B Tyler Wilson0-for-5, K
LF Dillon Lewis0-for-5, 4 K
RF Austin Green0-for-5, R, K
2B Juan Matheus2-for-4, RBI, K
Matheus gave Tampa a 3-2 lead in the 10th.
DH Josue Gonzalez2-for-4
A much-needed multi-hit effort for Gonzalez (2-for-30 entering the game).

RHP Greysen Carter: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
Carter was pumping fastballs north of 100 MPH this evening, but his control wasn’t sharp (which is why he will be a work in progress). In his three starts: 10.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 HR, 10 BB, 17 K.
RHP Brady Kirtner: 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
2.35 ERA (7.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 4 BB, 5 K)
RHP Brandon Decker: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Decker generated 13 whiffs tonight (7 with his slider, 5 with his change, 1 with his sinker). Every swing against his changeup resulted in a whiff.
RHP Gus Hughes (L, 2-1): 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

FCL (0-0)

Their season starts on May 3rd.

DSL (0-0)

Their season starts in June.

Yankees MILB 4/17: Spencer Jones Homers Twice (Again)

Notes:

The catching carousel continues. Today, Somerset activated 20-year-old Diomedes Hernandez from the Development List. He played first base in tonight’s game but is also a catcher.

Scranton placed IF Braden Shewmake on the injured list. IF Max Burt was promoted to Scranton to take his place. Shewmake is likely the most random player on the Yankees’ 40-man roster. The 27-year-old is hitting .222/.386/.378 in 58 plate appearances for Scranton while playing 2B/SS/3B.

Scranton (10-7) (Lost to Durham, 7-1)

RF Ismael Munguia1-for-3, 2B (4), SF, RBI
2B Jorbit Vivas2-for-4
Vivas has five multi-hit games and is hitting .339/.419/.500. He is on a 5-game hitting streak (10-for-20).
DH Everson Pereira2-for-4
Nobody follows Pereira for singles, but we’ll take it!  He is hitting .288/.356/.481 in 59 PA.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-4, 2 K
LF Dominic Smith0-for-4
3B Jose Rojas1-for-4
C Ronaldo Hernandez0-for-3, K
SS Andrew Velazquez1-for-3, 2B (3), R, K
CF Duke Ellis0-for-3, K

RHP Jake Woodford: (L, 0-1)  2.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 H, 2 HR
RHP Kervin Castro2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP McKinley Moore1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
The erratic Moore was recently activated off the Development List.
LHP Brent Headrick2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
Headrick pitched well in his appearances for the Yankees this season. We’ll toss this.

Somerset (5-7) (Lost to Altoona, 6-4)

SS Jake Gatewood0-for-4, R, BB, 2 K
LF Spencer Jones: 3-for-5, 2 HR (5), 3 RBI, 2 R
Jones has two 2-HR games this season (five in his career).  He is hitting .273/.385/.636 in 52 PA (1 double, 5 HR, 10 RBI, 10 R, 4-for-4 SB, 13.5% BB, 32.7% K). I talk about the strikeouts because that is important. It is also important to point out how talented this kid is. There might be a unicorn here, which could be good or bad.
C Rafael Flores2-for-4, 2 K
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-4, 4 K
CF Garrett Martin1-for-4
DH Cole Gabrielson1-for-3, 2 SB (5), BB
The 24-year-old is hitting .250/.371/.357 in 35 PA. He is 23-for-29 stealing bases in his career.
RF Jared Wegner0-for-3, BB, 2 K
2B Alexander Vargas0-for-3, R, SB (2), BB, 2 K
1B Diomedes Hernandez: 2-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, 2 K
Hernandez’s first Double-A at-bat resulted in an RBI double. He played in 28 games for the FCL/Tampa squads last year, hitting .272/.341/.333 with a homer and 14 RBI.

RHP Cam Schlittler: (L, 1-1)  4.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
The Patriots didn’t help his cause behind him (four errors, one after he left the game that allowed a 6th run to score).  Season: 1.80 ERA (15 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 15 K).
RHP Indigo Diaz1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Harrison Cohen1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 2 BB, 6 K
RHP Danny Watson1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (8-4) (Defeated Wilmington, 5-1)

CF Brendan Jones1-for-2, HR (1), RBI, 3 R, 3 SB (6), 3 BB
Jones has homered in back-to-back games.  He has eight walks in 10 games (29 BB in 24 games in 2024).  He is 24-for-25 stealing bases in his brief career.
SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 SB (7), BB, K
.333/.500/.500 in 50 PA (1 double, 1 triple, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 11 R, 7-for-8 SB, 22% BB, 22% K). You can’t ask for much more from his first 50 plate appearances.
LF Jackson Castillo2-for-5, 2B (4), RBI, 2 K
.263/.429/.368 in 49 PA. In 133 minor league games, Castillo is hitting .261/.390/.404 (26 doubles, 4 triples, 10 HR, 72 RBI, 80 R, 26-for-32 SB, 16.9% BB, 21.7% K). Certainly something to build on.
RF Jace Avina1-for-2, SF, RBI, BB, K
DH Omar Martinez0-for-4, 4 K
3B Josh Moylan0-for-4, 2 K
1B Coby Morales0-for-2, 2 BB
2B Brenny Escanio1-for-4, R
C Tomas Frick1-for-4, R, K

RHP Josh Grosz: (W, 1-0) 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, HR
Nice bounceback after a tough 2025 debut. Grosz struck out 12 in a game last season, so striking hitters out is a part of his game.
RHP Huey Morrill: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Hayden Merda2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Tampa (6-6) (Defeated St. Lucie, 6-1. Tampa pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts)

SS Roderick Arias1-for-4, 2B (4), RBI, R, BB, K
Back-to-back games with a double for Arias.  He is hitting .156/.283/.244 in 53 PA.
DH Edgleen Perez1-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, R, BB, K
A much-needed 2-run double for the struggling 18-year-old. Hopefully, he can build off that.
RF Brian Sanchez0-for-5, 2 K
C Engelth Urena1-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, R
Urena has homered in back-to-back games. You should watch this kid closely, as he has big-time power potential.
3B Parks Harber1-for-2, HR (3), RBI, 2 R, 2 BB, K
Harber should hit here, and he is (.270/.401/.496 in 34 games the last two years). He should get to Hudson Valley at some point.
LF Tyler Wilson1-for-4, 2 K
2B Austin Green1-for-4, K
CF Marshall Toole0-for-3, BB, K
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-3, R, BB, 3 K

LHP Griffin Herring: (W, 2-0)  6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 9 K
Herring allows his first career earned run.  Season: 0.55 ERA (16.1 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 22 K). Herring isn’t a hard-throwing lefty, but he can live at 92-94 with his 4-seamer and sinker. If he continues to throw well, there is no reason to keep him from Hudson Valley.
RHP Tony Rossi: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Rossi (25) threw a 96.7 MPH sinker and a 90.4 MPH changeup tonight. Go ahead and try to hit that.  As previously stated, he is old for the level, but it is his debut season. They will move him quickly if he continues to throw like this (6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K).
RHP Chris Veach1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K

FCL (0-0)

Their season starts in June.

Yankees MILB 4/15: George Lombard Jr.: HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB

Notes:

C Alex Jackson and C/OF Cooper Hummel are on the Triple-A injured list. That explains why C Jesus Rodriguez was promoted to Scranton. Additionally, the Railriders activated catcher Edinson Duran. Duran (22) played in 24 games in Low-A Tampa last year, hitting .218/.307/.346 with four doubles and three triples. This won’t be his first taste of Scranton, as he went 0-for-2 in one game in 2023.

The Yankees’ active catching depth chart in Scranton consists of Rodriguez, Duran, and Ronaldo HernandezRodriguez is on the 40-man roster.

Antonio Gomez was moved up from Hudson Valley to replace Rodriguez in Somerset. 18-year-old Edison Vivas was moved from the FCL to Hudson Valley. Vivas played in two games for Hudson Valley in 2024, going 2-for-5 with 3 RBI.

Scranton (10-5) (Defeated Durham, 9-1, in a late-morning affair)

CF Ismael Munguia0-for-4, SAC
C Jesus Rodriguez2-for-5, RBI, 2 R
3-for-28 in seven games for Somerset; 3-for-7 in two games for Scranton. Baseball!
3B Jorbit Vivas3-for-5, 2B (4), R, SB (2)
Vivas has back-to-back 3-hit games and four 3-hit efforts in 15 games.  He is hitting .333/.424/.519 in 67 PA (4 doubles, 2 HR, 14 RBI, 9 BB, 4 K).
RF Everson Pereira1-for-5, HR (2), 4 RBI, R, 2 K
It wasn’t the biggest bomb in history (98.5 MPH/347 feet), but they all count the same on the scoreboard.
1B T.J. Rumfield2-for-4, 2B (6), R
.315/.439/.593 in 66 PA (5 multi-hit efforts in 15 games)
   LF Duke Ellis0-for-1
DH Dominic Smith1-for-5, HR (1), RBI, R, K
Smith’s first HR as a member of the Yankees’ organization (I don’t count spring training!)
LF-1B Jose Rojas: 2-for-3, 2 2B (5), RBI, 2 R, BB, K
2B Andrew Velazquez2-for-3, RBI, R, BB
SS Braden Shewmake1-for-3, RBI, BB

RHP Erick Leal (W, 1-2): 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR
The sinker-slider veteran reached 94.5 MPH with the sinker.
LHP Tyler Matzek0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
LHP Rob Zastryzny1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Eric Reyzelman1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Reyzelman is heating up. He reached 97.5 MPH today (averaged 95.3).  It’s very hard to earn a slot in the Yankees’ bullpen, but I think there is a decent shot he makes his MLB debut this year.

Somerset (5-5) (Knocked off Altoona, 6-1)

3B Dylan Jasso: 2-for-5, 2B (1), HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 R, K
Jasso’s first Double-A homer is a lead-off blast.  After compiling zero extra-base hits in his first five games, he filled the doubles, triples, and home runs columns over his last two games.
CF Spencer Jones0-for-5, K
On the bright side, this improves his K%!
C Rafael Flores: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, BB, K
.250/.357/.444 in 42 PA.
RF Garrett Martin1-for-3, 2B (1), HBP, BB
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-5, HR (1), RBI, R, 2 K
Hardman’s extra-base hit streak reaches four (3 doubles, 1 HR)
LF Cole Gabrielson: 1-for-4, BB, K
SS Jake Gatewood1-for-3, 2B (6), R, BB
Last three games: 6-for-10 (5 doubles, 1 triple)
DH Jared Wegner1-for-3, 2B (1), R, BB, 2 K
2B Max Burt0-for-3, R, HBP

RHP Brendan Beck: (W, 1-0)  6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Beck’s first career win was a long time coming. He faced 19 batters (one reached via error). A brilliant performance, following his strong performance in his first start. Overall: 10 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K. If Beck can stay healthy, he can help the big club quickly. That can manifest in a few ways: a starter for the Yankees or as a trade chip.
RHP Cole Percival1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Kelly Austin: (S, 2)  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
6.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K. Austin has thrown well since being acquired from the Astros for Caleb Ferguson last year.

Hudson Valley (6-4) (Defeated Wilmington, 4-2)

DH Brendan Jones: 0-for-3, R, BB, K
SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-2, HR (1), 3 RBI, R, 2 SB (4), 2 BB
“Game power” is one of the tools he still needs to display. Once he does, he won’t just climb up prospect lists – he will surge up prospect lists. Yes, I am confident he will start flashing power.  He is hitting .333 with a .975 OPS (1 triple, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 9 R, 4-for-5 SB, 8 BB, 9 K)
CF Jackson Castillo0-for-2, 2 BB
Castillo has eight walks in 39 PA (20.5%).
LF Jace Avina1-for-4
C Omar Martinez0-for-4, 3 K
2B Jose Colmenares: 3-for-4, HR (2), RBI, R
Colmenares has 9 HR in 132 plate appearances over the last two seasons. One way to earn extra playing time is by hitting the snot out of the ball when you get opportunities.
3B Josh Moylan1-for-4, K
1B Coby Morales2-for-4, 3B (2), K
RF Anthony Hall1-for-4, 2B (2), R, K

RHP Carlos Lagrange: (W, 1-1)  6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K
Lagrange sets a new personal best for strikeouts in a game.  Like with Beck, this is his first career win (which makes sense, as it is his longest career outing and he reached five innings only one other time).
LHP Will Brian: (S, 1)  3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
On a night of “firsts,” Brian earns his first career save. Season: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K. That works.

Tampa (5-5) (Lost to St. Lucie, 17-6)

SS Roderick Arias0-for-3, R, BB
5-for-37 (.135; 2 doubles, 2 RBI, 4 R, 3-for-3 SB, 7 BB, 12 K). Rough start to his 2025 campaign.
DH Edgleen Perez0-for-4, R, K
CF Brian Sanchez1-for-4, 2B (4), RBI, 2 K
4 doubles, 2 triples in 9 games.
C Engelth Urena2-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, R
Urena is taking his walks (9 in 41 PA; 21.95%). Perhaps the power is starting to show up (double, HR in his last three games).
3B Parks Harber1-for-3, R, BB
Harber has a 5-game hitting streak (6-for-17)
RF Tyler Wilson1-for-4, R, K
LF Dillon Lewis0-for-3, R, BB, K
2B Juan Matheus0-for-4, RBI
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-3, SF, RBI

RHP Andrew Landry: (L, 0-1)  1.1 IP, 8 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 2 HR
Ouch. On the bright side, this will likely be Landry’s worst career performance.  Throw it away and move on.
RHP Cole Zaffiro3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Gus Hughes: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Alex Bustamante: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 1 K
RHP Duncan Pastore0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Pastore’s first career pitching appearance!

Nothing to report

Scranton (4-4) (Lost to Syracuse, 7-4)

1B Dominic Smith0-for-4, K
LF Everson Pereira1-for-4, K
7-for-25 with four RBI. He is looking for his first extra-base hit. Given that extra-base power is his “thing,” I am not worried.

.303/.395/.636 in 38 PA.

Somerset (1-1) (Defeated Hartford, 6-2)

2B Dylan Jasso1-for-3, 2 BB, K
Jasso’s first career game at second base.
CF Spencer Jones2-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, R, BB, 2 K
How many times in his career have I written “2-for-4, 2 K” in a Spencer Jones stat line? I will gladly take the hits.
1B Rafael Flores3-for-5, HR (1), 2 RBI, R
In 67 Double-A games: .280/.362/.528 (14 doubles, 16 HR, 35 RBI, 41 R, 7-for-7 SB, 28 BB (9.9%), 75 K (26.6%)
C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-5, 2 K
DH Tyler Hardman1-for-4, R, 2 K
Before his 2023 injury, Hardman was hitting .237/.332/.558 with 26 HR in only 77 games at this level. Since coming back, the power hasn’t returned (8 HR in 76 games at this level).
RF Garrett Martin0-for-3, R, HBP, K
SS Jake Gatewood1-for-4, 2B (1), R, 3 K
LF Jared Wegner1-for-3, RBI, BB, K
3B Max Burt2-for-4, 2 RBI, R, SB (1)
Burt is grinding it out. The Yankees drafted him in the 28th round in 2018 out of Northeastern. He re-signed as a minor league free agent in March to begin his 7th season with the organization.

RHP Clarke Schmidt3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K
52 pitches/37 strikes. This is what you wanted to see in his first rehab appearance.
LHP Edgar Barclay (W, 1-0): 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
RHP Harrison Cohen0.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Kelly Austin2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
The 24-year-old was acquired from the Houston Astros for Caleb Ferguson last July (the Yankees also received international bonus pool money in the transaction).

Hudson Valley (1-1) (Walked it off against Jersey Shore, 8-7)

RF Brendan Jones: 2-for-5, 3B (1), 3 RBI, R, SB (1), BB, K
For now, Jones is credited with a 3-run game-winning single. We’ll see if that holds, or if some shenanigans occurred. Either way, exciting walk-off win!
SS George Lombard Jr.1-for-4, 3B (1), SF, RBI, R, 2 K
If the extra-base power shows up this year (as many expect), watch out.
CF Jackson Castillo1-for-4, RBI, R, BB, 2 K
The top of this batting order is enviously athletic.
LF Jace Avina: 2-for-4, 2B (1), R, BB
DH Omar Martinez1-for-4, RBI, BB, K
3B Josh Moylan1-for-4, BB, K
1B Coby Morales1-for-4, RBI, R, BB, K
C Antonio Gomez1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, R
  C Tomas Frick2-for-2, 2B (1), R
Frick performed well for Tampa last year, hitting .250/.370/.368 in 173 plate appearances. It was his professional debut after being drafted in the 15th round in 2023.
2B Brenny Escanio: 1-for-3, R, 2 SB (2), 2 BB, K

RHP Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz4.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Rodriguez-Cruz was acquired from the Red Sox in exchange for catcher Carlos Narvaez. He is the type of “lottery ticket” arm you should target for a 40-man roster guy. Only 21, he went 5-5 with a 2.91 ERA in 89.2 IP between Low-A and High-A last season with a 102/43 K/BB.
RHP Sebastian Keane1.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Hayden Merda: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
The 6’6″ Merda missed the 2024 season. At this level in 2023, he went 3-6 with a 6.21 ERA in 21 games (20 starts), posting a 96/57 K/BB over 95.2 innings. The Yankees signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2022.
RHP Tyrone Yulie: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Another pitcher who missed the 2024 season. In 2023, at this level, he posted a 4.56 ERA in 79 IP with a 90/43 K/BB.

Tampa (2-0) (Defeated Lakeland, 7-6, in ten innings)

SS Roderick Arias0-for-4, 2 BB, 2 K
Even as I talk about Arias being a “raw” talent, he sneakily puts up solid BB rates (12.3% last year).
C Edgleen Perez1-for-2, 2 R, BB
Perez is only 18 years old. He easily conquered the DSL and FCL, earning himself this challenge.  He is amongst the youngest players in the Florida State League (he is not the youngest. Andrew Salas (Marlins) holds that distinction).
   C Josue Gonzalez0-for-2, R, BB
CF Brian Sanchez0-for-5, R, BB, K
DH Engelth Urena1-for-3, 2B (1), 2 RBI, R, 3 BB, K
Urena’s 2023 injury stalled his timetable, but he is still only 20 years old.  In 40 FCL games last year, he hit 11 doubles and 8 HR while driving home 31. The power potential he possesses is legitimate
1B Parks Harber2-for-5, 2B (1), 3 RBI, BB, 2 K
After being drafted last year, Harber was assigned here. He hit .269/.389/.449 in 23 games with a homer and 19 RBI.
RF Tyler Wilson: 2-for-4, RBI, CS (1), 2 BB, K
LF Dillon Lewis2-for-5, 2B (1), R
2B Hans Montero1-for-5, 2 K
3B Juan Matheus0-for-3, SF, RBI, R, CS (1), BB

LHP Tanner Bauman4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
A day after Griffin Herring dazzled in his professional debut, Bauman turns in a solid effort in his debut. The 6’5″ 22-year-old was drafted in the 9th round in the 2024 draft.  For Auburn last year, he went 3-2 with a 4.57 ERA in 20 appearances (6 starts) with a 47/16 K/BB over 41.1 IP.
RHP Alex Bustamante: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Bustamente spent the entire 2024 season on the injured list.
RHP Cade Austin1.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Chris Veach2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
This is the professional debut for Veach, who the Yankees signed as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina. This is the first time I am saying this in 2025: Don’t let an “undrafted” status sour you on a prospect. The draft is shorter nowadays, leaving a lot of talent out there for teams to sign.
RHP Gus Hughes: (W, 1-0)  0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Hughes’ first professional appearance is a successful one. Drafted in the 18th round in 2024, the High Point graduate stands only 6’0″. Last season, as a starter, he went 6-4 with a 3.77 ERA in 102.2 IP with a 111/41 K/BB. A few High Point players have reached the big leagues, with reliever Cody Allen (Guardians, Angels) being the most successful.

Yankees MILB 7/20: Pitching Rules!

News

RHP Cody Morris cleared waivers and was outrighted to Scranton.

With Josh Maciejewski demoted to Scranton, my guess is that Yoendrys Gomez will get the call. That is a guess, but he is rested and conveniently on the 40-man roster. It appears the Yankees are not ready to promote Scott Effross.

Scranton (50-42) (Defeated Buffalo, 8-3, in 11 innings)

CF Brandon Lockridge2-for-5, 3 RBI, RS, BB
Yesterday, Lockridge went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts. I love baseball.
2B Jorbit Vivas1-for-5, RS, SB (9), HBP, K
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-6, RBI
Ramirez is 15-for-81 (.183) since his promotion. He is not ready to be a “savior,” and they don’t have a position for him anyway. If he played 3B, we would be having a discussion…
SS Oswald Peraza: 3-for-4, 2 2B (6), RBI, 2 RS, CS (4), 2 BB, K
Peraza reaches base five times. A few years ago, that would have created a buzz but much of his buzz is gone, and I am not sure who to blame for that.
DH T.J. Rumfield0-for-5, RS
3B Jeter Downs1-for-3, SF, RBI, SAC
1B J.C. Escarra4-for-5, 2B (1), RBI, 2 RS
Escarra was promoted here from Somerset. He will serve as a backup to Agustin Ramirez in addition to his 1B/3B duties. While this is his Scranton debut, it wasn’t his Triple-A debut. He played in 58 games for Triple-A Norfolk in 2021 before heading to the independent/Mexican leagues for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
RF Oscar Gonzalez1-for-3, RS, BB, HBP
LF Taylor Trammell0-for-4, SB (10), BB, 2 K

RHP Will Warren5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K
6.42 ERA (89.2 IP, 97 H, 70 R, 64 ER, 17 HR, 34 BB, 107 K). Two starts ago, he struck out 11 in six innings (1 R, 2 H). We’ll see if he is starting to find a groove. Left-handed batters have, to put it mildly, torched him this season (.315/.408/.566 entering today).
RHP Art Warren1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Yerry De Los Santos1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Alex Mauricio1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
0.93 ERA (29 IP, 19 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 33 K). He has been masterful this season.
LHP Anthony Misiewicz: (W, 3-2)  1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Phil Bickford1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (45-44) (Squeaked past Altoona, 2-1)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, 2B (14), 2 K
.238/.316/.403 in 342 PA (14 doubles, 3 triples, 10 HR, 46 RBI, 48 R, 18-for-22 SB, 9.6% BB, 37.1% K).  Is he the CF version of Oneil Cruz? That isn’t a bad comparison on paper, but Cruz reached Double-A at 20 (to be fair, Jones was still in college!) and struck out 25.7% of the time. That remains the one thing I can’t get over. Striking out 37.1% of the time in Double-A is a massive red flag. So, I do think Cruz is a good comparison when you factor in size and athleticism. I don’t think Jones is progressing as well as Cruz did.
3B Ben Cowles0-for-4, 3 K
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-4, RS, K
C Rafael Flores: 1-for-4, RBI, 3 K
How do you fix an 0-for-3, 3 K night? By hitting a walk-off RBI single!
DH Elijah Dunham: 1-for-3, RS, K
Dunham has hit safely in 21 of his last 22 games. He is 21-for-51 (.412) in July.
RF Grant Richardson1-for-3, 2B (19), K
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-3, RBI
LF Aaron Palensky0-for-3, 2 K
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-3, K

RHP Bailey Dees6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, HR
4.26 ERA (95 IP, 79 H, 50 R, 45 ER, 14 HR, 36 BB, 99 K). Due to the break, Dees hadn’t started since July 12th. I think he needed the time off and it paid dividends tonight.
RHP Danny Watson1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Watson’s overall numbers aren’t spectacular, but I think much of that was due to his return from injury. He has put together six scoreless outings in his last seven, lowering his ERA from 10.13 to 7.47.
RHP Luis Velasquez: (W, 3-2)  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
4.75 ERA (36 IP, 31 H, 27 R, 19 ER, 5 HR, 27 BB, 51 K)

Hudson Valley (43-44) (Lost, 4-3, in 11 innings)

2B Roc Riggio: 2-for-5, 3B (4), RS, 2 K
Riggio has two home runs and a triple in his last three games.
SS Jared Serna1-for-4, SF, 2 RBI
.252/.342/.435 in 374 PA (23 doubles, 12 HR, 55 RBI, 49 R, 10.4% BB, 15.8% K, 10-for-17 SB).

Tampa (34-53) (Won two games against Bradenton)

Game 1 (Won, 2-1, in the conclusion of yesterday’s game. This game went 10 innings and was won on a walk-off error)

3B George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-3, RS, SB (26), 2 BB, K
This is Lombard Jr.’s third straight 2-hit effort.
SS Roderick Arias0-for-2, SF, RBI, SB (25), 2 BB, K
Arias has nine walks in his last seven games.
1B Dylan Jasso0-for-4, BB, K
CF Jackson Castillo0-for-4
RF Willy Montero1-for-4
2B Hans Montero0-for-4, 3 K
DH Coby Morales1-for-4, K
C Josue Gonzalez0-for-4, RS
LF Daury Arias0-for-4, K

RHP Chase Hampton3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Hampton retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced (hit a batter) and averaged 92 MPH (94 max). He threw 45 pitches (30 strikes) and should be coming to Somerset shortly.
RHP Aaron Nixon0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Nixon was used as a “bridge” between Hampton and Serna.
RHP Luis Serna1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
That bridge will be meaningless, as Serna did not return to this game.
RHP Ocean Gabonia2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
4.20 ERA (45 IP, 45 H, 24 R, 21 ER, 4 HR, 11 BB, 53 K).
RHP Osiel Rodriguez (W, 1-2): 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
2.42 ERA (44.2 IP, 22 H, 13 R, 12 ER, 6 HR, 22 BB, 53 K).

Game 2 (Won, 7-0)

3B George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-3, 2B (16), RBI, RS, K
Lombard’s OPS is up to .717. He owns a .360 slugging percentage. On June 9th, his SLG was .268. His progress is one of the highlights this season.
SS Roderick Arias1-for-3, K
He leads the FSL in triples (7), is 4th in RBI (45), and third in stolen bases (25).
1B Dylan Jasso0-for-3, RBI
CF Jackson Castillo1-for-3, 2B (16), RBI, K
Castillo has a .811 OPS in 70 games. It is fair to say that he has been one of the system’s biggest surprises this year.
DH Willy Montero0-for-3, 2 K
2B Hans Montero1-for-3, RS, SB (9), 2 K
RF Coby Morales: 3-for-3, 2 HR (4), 3 RBI, 3 RS
Morales’ first career multi-HR game.
C Diomedes Hernandez2-for-3, 2B (1), RBI, RS
The 19-year-old’s first Low-A extra-base hit.
LF Daury Arias0-for-3, RS

RHP Josh Grosz: (W, 3-5)  5.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
Last three starts: 15.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 17 K. This stretch comes after a tough emergency outing for Somerset. He could have easily been discouraged by that, but he has instead turned it up a notch. Season (for Tampa): 4.64 ERA (66 IP, 65 H, 47 R, 34 ER, 26 BB, 85 K). This is his debut season.
RHP Jordy Luciano: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Luciano (22) can dial it up into the mid-90s.

FCL (34-21) (Split a doubleheader with the FCL Tigers, essentially chopping two games off the schedule. They own a 1.5-game lead with three games left. Note: They don’t “make up” games in the FCL. If the Yankees win the division by 0.5 games over the Tigers, the Tigers don’t get to make up a game)

Game 1 (Lost, 8-3)

CF Brando Mayea2-for-4, 2B (2), 2 K
DH Edgleen Perez0-for-1, 2 RS, 3 BB
C Engelth Urena: 3-for-4, HR (8), 2 RBI, RS, CS (2)
His 8th HR in 37 games.
LF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, BB
SS Juan Matheus1-for-4, RBI

RHP Sean Boyle1.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
The 27-year-old Boyle is down here on a rehab stint. He made only 9 starts for Scranton last year.
LHP Will Brian1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Their 10th-round pick in 2022 (Eastern Kentucky) makes his first rehab appearance.

Game 2 (Won, 17-5)

CF Brando Mayea2-for-6, 3B (2), 3 RBI, 2 RS
Mayea, who has five 2-hit games in July (8 games played), is hitting .297/.384/.344 in 146 PA with a 25.3% K. He has a pair of doubles and triples and is 16-for-19 stealing bases. In my opinion, the 18-year-old is doing enough to get to Low-A Tampa, whether that is to finish this year or to start 2025.
C Edgleen Perez1-for-4, RS, BB, K
.289/.452/.384 in 208 PA. Perez has more walks (44) than strikeouts (33).
1B Engelth Urena0-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB
Urena is hitting .315/.429/.591 in 154 PA (11 doubles, 8 HR, 31 RBI, 32 R, 14.9% BB, 11.7% K). He is second in the league in OPS and third in home runs (he has played 15 fewer games than leader Jhonny Severino, who has 10 HR). He is a legitimate prospect with the bat. We’ll see what he is long-term with the glove.
LF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
.291/.384/.485 in 190 PA with 15 stolen bases in 18 attempts.
SS Juan Matheus3-for-5, 2 2B (9), 4 RBI, RS
.312/.418/.478 in 189 PA.  He is third in the league with 38 RBI.
DH Gabriel Terrero2-for-3, 3B (1), 2 RBI, 3 RS, SB (14), BB
2B Abrahan Ramirez3-for-4, 2B (14), RBI, 2 RS, BB
.351/.454/.519 in 184 PA. He has slowed down (.255/.321/.392 in July) but we didn’t expect him to hit .400 this season, right? He still ranks second in batting average.
RF Joel Mendez2-for-4, 3B (4), 2 RS, BB, 2 K
.301/.417/.569 after hitting .293/.363/.424 here last year. Likely not a top prospect, but he has done enough to get to Low-A.
3B Santiago Gomez2-for-4, HR (2), 5 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
The 20-year-old ties his best for RBI in a game. He is hitting .333/.438/.440 in 89 PA. If you haven’t figured it out, the FCL Yankees are good offensively.

RHP Carlos Lagrange1.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
He only has 6.2 innings during his rehab and the FCL season ends next week. If they don’t move him to Tampa, he will need to get some innings this fall/winter.
RHP Hansel Rosario (W, 2-0): 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, HR

Yankees MILB 7/12: Cam Schlittler Dazzles

News:

2B/3B Jorbit Vivas was promoted to the Yankees today as 1B/3B J.D. Davis went on the injured list.

How much will Vivas be used? Who knows? Because Davis’ IL stint is retroactive, he will be eligible to return right after the All-Star Break. Vivas may only be here for three games.

However, if he isn’t going to be used, they could have brought up Oswald Peraza to sit on the bench and pinch-run. This leads me to believe that Vivas will play.

See what is going on? The Yankees are leading me to a state of confusion. The good news? They face RHP Grayson Rodriguez tomorrow, so we’ll determine how committed they are to using him.

Scranton (48-41) (Lost to Syracuse, 4-3)

CF Brandon Lockridge1-for-4, 2 SB (30), BB, 2 K
Lockridge reaches 30+ stolen bases for the second straight season. Last year, he stole 40 bases and is well on his way to doing that again. I have used the name Tim Locastro many times and still think he can become that type of MLB player. The opportunity must come, however.
C Agustin Ramirez0-for-4, BB
Ramirez is in a little 1-for-13 slump after his extended hot streak. Baseball is a game of adjusting, re-adjusting, re-re-adjusting, etc.
2B Oswald Peraza1-for-4
DH Carlos Narvaez1-for-4
Narvaez has a 7-game hitting streak. He has one hit in all seven games and only one of them for extra-bases (double).
1B Jose Rojas2-for-4, HR (17), RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
LF Taylor Trammell0-for-4, 3 K
RF Oscar Gonzalez1-for-4
SS Jeter Downs1-for-4, SB (15), K
I can guarantee you that Downs will get another MLB opportunity. That tends to happen with players who have “prospect pedigree”. He is still only 25 years old.
3B Kevin Smith3-for-4, 2 RBI, SB (10), CS (1)

LHP Edgar Barclay: (L, 3-8) 4.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, HR
Barclay has run into a wall in Triple-A. Between last year and this year, he owns a 7.09 ERA in 119.1 IP with a 117/73 K/BB and 31 HR allowed.
RHP Alex Mauricio0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
1.00 ERA (27 IP, 19 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 32 K). I will forever root for prospects like Mauricio to get to MLB. He is 27 years old and has consistently pitched well since entering the organization in 2017. Like every minor leaguer, he missed the 2020 season. On top of that, he missed the entire 2021 season, which put him behind the curve.
LHP Oddanier Mosqueda1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Duane Underwood Jr.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Somerset (42-43) (Lost to Erie, 7-1. A hitting clinic, this was not)

SS Ben Cowles1-for-4, RBI
.296/.375/.475 in 344 PA. His 23 doubles and 47 RBI are personal bests.
1B Tyler Hardman0-for-4, 3 K
C Rafael Flores1-for-4, 2 K
RF Elijah Dunham0-for-3, K
Dunham’s 17-game hitting streak is snapped.
DH J.C. Escarra0-for-3, K
CF Grant Richardson0-for-3
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-3, K
LF Aaron Palensky0-for-2, RS, BB
3B Max Burt1-for-3, 2B (4), K

RHP Bailey Dees: (L, 4-5) 4.1 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 6 BB, 6 K, 2 HR
Dees allowed a grand slam in the first inning and couldn’t get on track. This bumps his ERA to 4.45 in 89 IP (77 H, 49 R, 44 ER, 13 HR, 34 BB, 94 K). One thing you worry about is Dees hitting a wall. This is his first season starting, even though he was often asked to go multiple innings as a reliever.
RHP Colby White: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Danny Watson1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Watson has allowed zero runs in four of his last five outings as he continues his recovery from injury.
RHP Matt Sauer1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Hudson Valley (42-41) (Defeated Jersey Shore, 6-1. They scored 5 in the first and never looked back)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-5, RS, 2 K
SS Jared Serna0-for-5
Serna is 8-for-41 (.195) with three doubles in July. That said, he has struck out only four times.
DH Jace Avina1-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K
C Antonio Gomez1-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, RS, BB, K
It is hard to give up on someone who had/has the potential of Gomez. It would be nice to see some signs of prospect life the rest of the season.
1B Josh Moylan1-for-5, RBI, RS, 2 K
RF Garrett Martin0-for-2, RS, BB, HBP
LF Christopher Familia1-for-4, 2B (2), 2 RBI, RS, K
CF Cole Gabrielson1-for-3, RBI, BB
Gabrielson has a 5-game hitting streak.
3B Brenny Escanio1-for-3, RBI, BB, K

RHP Cam Schlittler: (W, 4-3)  6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
2.84 ERA (69.2 IP, 45 H, 30 R, 22 ER, 6 HR, 33 BB, 89 K). He fell one strikeout short of tying his best.
RHP Huey Morrill2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
3.64 ERA (29.2 IP, 28 H, 17 R, 12 ER, 6 HR, 8 BB, 32 K)
RHP Yorlin Calderon1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Minor league baseball can be a numbers game, but I would not have demoted Calderon.

Tampa (30-53) (Lost to Dunedin, 3-0)

SS George Lombard Jr.: 0-for-4, 2 K
2B Roderick Arias0-for-2, CS (11), 2 BB
Arias has at least one walk in four straight games. In July, he is hitting .265/.390/.353 (9-for-34; 3 doubles, 7 BB, 8 K, 4-for-6 SB).
1B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, 2 K
Jasso’s single broke up a no-hitter in the 7th.
CF Jackson Castillo1-for-3
Castillo, who bats left-handed, has struggled against LHP (9-for-43) but is hitting .267/.405/.439 against RHP with all six home runs. He is 21, so there is time to figure it all out.
RF Willy Montero0-for-2, BB
3B Hans Montero0-for-2, BB, 2 K
C Josue Gonzalez0-for-3
DH Anthony Hall0-for-3
Hall’s rehab was moved here from the FCL.
LF Coby Morales0-for-3, K

RHP Chase Hampton: (L, 0-1)  2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
Hampton reached 91.7 MPH with his 4-seamer but averaged 90.1. Don’t be concerned about velocity yet. He has compiled only 5.2 innings during his rehab.
RHP Gabriel Barbosa5.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K
He stranded a runner for Hampton and dominated from there. He owns a 4.86 ERA in 83.1 IP (82 H, 47 R, 45 ER, 7 HR, 25 BB, 87 K). Drafted in the minor league phase of the Rule 5, Barbosa uses a wide arsenal that includes a slider, cutter, curve, 4-seam fastball, and changeup. According to Savant, he threw two sinkers as well. He is intriguing because organizations don’t target players in the Rule 5 draft for fun. While these players typically do not become MLB players, they can be useful. In 2017 for example, the Yankees traded Yefry Ramirez to the Orioles for international bonus pool money. Ramirez subsequently pitched in 31 MLB games.

FCL (30-17) (Defeated the FCL Tigers, 7-1. This increases their lead to 2 over the Tigers (3 in the loss column). They play the Phillies tomorrow. The Phillies are 3.5 back (4 in the loss column))

CF Brando Mayea2-for-3, RS
Mayea’s first game since June 24th. He was never placed on the Injured List. I wouldn’t worry that he was pulled – that is standard procedure for a returning player. The bonus baby is hitting .272/.370/.301 in 119 PA with a 10.9% BB and 26.9% K. Hopefully, the injuries are over with (he missed time at the beginning of the season as well) and he can play consistently over the final few weeks of the season.
  PH-RF Ramiro Altagracia1-for-2, 2B (1), RBI, RS
C Edgleen Perez1-for-3, RBI, RS, 2 BB
.301/.466/.414 in 176 PA (7 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 22 RBI, 29 R, 21.6% BB, 16.5% K). An impressive season for Perez, who doesn’t turn 19 until May 2025.
1B Engelth Urena2-for-5, 2B (9), 2 RS, K
.294/.407/.559 in 123 PA (9 doubles, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 24 R, 13.8% BB, 13.8% K, 4-for-5 SB. Urena turns 20 on August 17th. He likely would be in Low-A now if he didn’t miss the entire 2023 season). He has a 7-game hitting streak and is hitting a ridiculous .516/.634/1.129 in July (16-for-31, 7 doubles, 4 HR, 14 RBI, 12 R, 9 BB, 4 K, 4-for-5 SB). He has passed the early test. Next up is a full-season league.
2B Abrahan Ramirez1-for-3, 3B (3), RBI, K
Unlike with Mayea, it is a little concerning that Ramirez was pulled. He is hitting .370/.470/.551 in 165 PA.
SS Juan Matheus1-for-4, 2 RBI
LF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, BB
.306/.398/.526 in 166 PA
DH Gabriel Terrero1-for-4, RS, SB (13)
Terrero is a perfect 13-for-13 stealing bases (14-for-20 in 2023).
RF-LF Joel Mendez: 1-for-2, RS, SB (2), 2 BB
3B-2B Santiago Gomez2-for-3, CS (5), BB

RHP Indigo Diaz1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
“Who did the Yankees acquire for Lucas Luetge?” Your first answer (Caleb Durbin) is obvious. The second answer is Diaz, a 25-year-old RHP who pitched to a 4.26 ERA in 31.2 IP between Hudson Valley/Somerset in 2023 (43/21 K/BB).
LHP Henry Lalane (W, 1-1): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
“Will Lalane get to Tampa once the FCL season ends?” He needs innings so I assume he will make his way there.
RHP Andrew Landry3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, HR
Being a 22-year-old draftee from last year, Landry should pitch well at this level. He didn’t start his season until June 22nd, which is why he is still here to begin with.
RHP Omar Gonzalez2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

DSL Yankees (10-17) (Defeated the DSL Arizona Black, 11-4. They earned 7 hits while walking 6 times and being hit by 6 pitches. Arizona also had four errors. DSL baseball!)

DH Justin Capellan1-for-2, 2B (6), RBI, RS, SB (5), BB, 2 HBP, K
That is what you call an eventful day.
RF Estivenzon Montero: 3-for-4, 3B (1), 2 RBI, 2 RS
The 17-year-old is 8-for-36 with two doubles and a triple in his debut campaign.
LF Dilan Medina1-for-3, RBI, RS, HBP
There’s only so much playing time to distribute, even with two DSL teams. Medina is 7-for-23 with a double and 3 RBI. He is an 18-year-old right-handed bat.

RHP Emanuel Vargas2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Michell Chirinos3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
The 20-year-old owns a 28/13 K/BB over 18.2 IP.
RHP Jesus Mejia (W, 1-0): 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Mejia earns his first professional win. He hasn’t allowed a run in 8.2 innings.

DSL Bombers (17-11) (Shut down the DSL Giants Orange, 1-0, in a 7-inning game)

DH Francisco Vilorio0-for-3, K
SS Christofer Reyes1-for-3, 2B (3)
The 16-year-old is hitting .216/.326/.257 with three doubles and 8 RBI.
C Carlos Villarroel: 1-for-3, RS, SB (1)
The 17-year-old picked a good time for his first career stolen base (bottom of the 7th)
LF Browm Martinez1-for-3, RBI
Walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 7th.

RHP Mariano Salomon5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K
0.98 ERA (27.1 IP, 15 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 32 K). He is 20 years old and this is his second season here, so take that into consideration. However, the only way to get off the island is by playing/pitching well.
RHP Enixon Sanchez (W, 2-0): 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Sanchez turned 17 on July 7th. He owns a 2.57 ERA in 14 IP with a 12/11 K/BB.
