Yankees MILB 5/25: George Lombard Jr. Reaches Base 4 Times

Notes:

The Yankees elected not to add Cooper Hummel to the 26-man roster.  He is now a free agent.

LHP Brock Selvidge‘s rehab was moved from the FCL to Tampa.

Injury Log

Scranton (22-26)

Their game against Nashville was cancelled and won’t be made up. T.J. Rumfield homered before the rain started, but it won’t count.

Somerset (22-22) (Lost to New Hampshire, 7-5)

SS George Lombard Jr.2-for-3, 3 R, 2 SB (6), 2 BB
Lombard Jr.’s second multi-hit game since his promotion. He is 7-for-26 (.269) in his last eight games (1 double, 3 RBI, 8 R, 8 BB, 3-for-4 SB). Has the adjustment begun?  Since I haven’t shown it in a while, here are his combined numbers: .287/.457/.390 in 184 PA (9 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 18 RBI, 35 R, 17-for-20 SB, 21.2% BB, 19.6% K).
DH Rafael Flores2-for-4, 2B (12), RBI, SB (5), BB, K
Flores is 8-for-17 in his last four games (2 doubles, 1 HR). He is the organizational leader in doubles (12), homers (10), and hits (53). He is second in RBI (34) to veteran Jose Rojas. He is one of only three qualified Yankees’ prospects hitting over .300 (Parks Harber and Jesus Rodriguez are the others).
3B Dylan Jasso3-for-5, HR (8), 3 RBI, R
.286/.337/.500 in 166 PA (7 doubles, 1 triple, 8 HR, 27 RBI, 23 R, 0-for-2 SB, 5.4% BB, 19.3% K). His walk rate is down (9.8% in 2024), but it comes with a reduced strikeout rate (24.4% in 2024). He is a right-handed bat who can play 1B/2B/3B, which is something this organization can use. Whether or not he is MLB material, we’ll see.
   PR Alexander Vargas0-for-0, SB (8)
LF Brennen Davis: 0-for-3, 2 BB, K
CF Garrett Martin0-for-5, 3 K
.213/.316/.375 in 159 PA
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-5, K
It’s possible that Hardman’s insane run in 2023 (26 HR in 77 games, though it came with a lot of strikeouts) was his peak. However, I continue to wonder if the injury he suffered that year sapped his offense because it has been nothing close to that since.
RF Grant Richardson1-for-4, 2B (2), 2 K
C Antonio Gomez0-for-4, K
Since promotion: .177/.241/.215 in 88 PA. They are giving him plenty of playing time, but the bat hasn’t responded.
2B Max Burt1-for-4, R, 2 K

RHP Bailey Dees4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
4.46 ERA (38.1 IP, 37 H, 20 R, 19 ER, 5 HR, 19 BB, 45 K). Dees will end May with a 2.70 ERA and 24/6 K/BB over 20 innings.
RHP Harrison Cohen1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
2.87 ERA (15.2 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 21 K)
RHP Jordany Ventura (L, 2-1): 1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, HR
For a relief pitcher, an outing like this can kill your season. He’s had a few such appearances, explaining his 9.24 ERA.
RHP Indigo Diaz0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Luis Pacheco0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Hudson Valley (29-15) (Defeated Winston-Salem, 5-4)

LF Brendan Jones: 1-for-5, 2 R, SB (18)
It feels as if Jones will run every time second base is open. That is what I want prospects to do. He leads the organization in stolen bases and is tied with Lombard Jr. for first in runs scored (35).  He grounded into a double play today. It was only the second time he has done that in his 63-game career.
RF Jace Avina: 1-for-3, SF, 2 RBI, 2 K
DH Coby Morales1-for-4, RBI, R, SB (7)
1B Parks Harber0-for-3, SB (1), BB, 2 K
CF Jackson Castillo0-for-3, SF, RBI K
2B Jose Colmenares0-for-3, BB, 2 K
3B Josh Moylan1-for-4, R, 2 K
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, BB, 2 K
C Tomas Frick3-for-3, RBI, R, BB
Frick’s third career 3-hit effort.

RHP Bryce Warrecker 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
Did they need an arm for today’s start, or are they building him up for a return to the rotation? Warrecker has been a dominant force out of the pen this year (0.50 ERA in 18 IP with a 24/3 K/BB). Last year, as a starter, he posted a 5.79 ERA in 19 starts with a 46/30 K/BB over 65.1 innings.
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Hayden Merda2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
3.54 ERA (20.1 IP, 16 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 28 K). Like Warrecker, Merda has pitched well in the bullpen after spending his first season in the rotation (Merda’s first season was 2023 – he missed 2024).
RHP Huey Morrill: (W, 2-0)  1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
0.57 ERA (15.2 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 11 K)
RHP Ocean Gabonia: (S, 1)  1.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Tampa (24-21) (Defeated Dunedin, 9-5. The Tarpons have, remarkably, caught the Blue Jays in the standings, and are in a three-way tie for second (Clearwater is the other team). The three squads are chasing Lakeland.)

SS Roderick Arias0-for-4, SB (11), BB, 2 K
It’s more of the same from Arias. Season: .165/.330/.282 in 106 PA (7 doubles, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 12 R, 11-for-13 SB, 18.9% BB, 29.2% K). After hitting .222/.291/.253 vs. LHP last year, he is 1-for-17 this year. Not that he is lighting up the scoreboard against RHP this year. I don’t give up on 20-year-olds, but the red flags are serious.
C Edgleen Perez0-for-4, BB, K
CF Brian Sanchez2-for-4, 2B (11), R, 2 K
Sanchez has 11 doubles in 26 games (34 doubles, 12 triples, 4 HR in 108 career games).
  CF Marshall Toole0-for-1
DH Engelth Urena0-for-3, R, SB (5), 2 BB, K
RF Dillon Lewis2-for-4, HR (8), 3 RBI, 2 R, BB, K
.241/.318/.475 in 176 PA (9 doubles, 2 triples, 8 HR, 26 RBI, 30 R, 11-for-12 SB, 9.7% BB, 27.8% K). He owns a 6-game hitting streak and is hitting .313/.389/.688 in May (5 doubles, 2 triples, 7 HR, 23 RBI, 22 R). He has turned it up several notches.
3B Juan Matheus1-for-4, 2B (10), R, BB, K
Matheus has 100 RBI, 93 runs, 107 walks, and 50 stolen bases in 149 career games.
LF Tyler Wilson2-for-3, HR (4), RBI, 2 R, SB (10), BB
2B Austin Green1-for-4, HR (2), 4 RBI, R, K
Green’s grand slam turned a 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead.
1B Hans Montero0-for-2, SF, RBI, CS (3), BB, K

LHP Brock Selvidge2.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
Selvidge’s second rehab appearance. Since he is in Low-A now, we have some Savant data: He reached 94.2 MPH with his 4-seamer (averaged 92.4) and generated five whiffs on his slider (17 pitches).
RHP J.T. Etheridge (W, 1-0): 4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR
Etheridge generated 14 whiffs (5 with his 4-seamer, 5 with his slider, 3 with his changeup, and 1 with his curve).
RHP Chris Veach1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
1.50 ERA (18 IP, 13 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 29 K). Average velocity on sinker: 92.4 MPH. Average velocity on change-up: 75.1 MPH. I like the differential, at least.
RHP Brady Kirtner1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.16 ERA (25 IP, 14 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 28 K)

FCL (8-8)

Day off.

DSL (0-0)

Their season starts in June.

Yankees MILB 5/13: Omar Martinez: 4 Hits, HR

Notes:

The Yankees signed RHP Anthony DeSclafani to a minor league contract and assigned him to Scranton.

The 35-year-old has 180 games (169 starts) of MLB experience from 2014 to 2023. He is 54-56 in those appearances with a 4.20 ERA (4.16 FIP). He has pitched for the Marlins, Reds, and Giants. In 2023, he posted a 4.88 ERA (4.35 FIP) over 99.2 innings with an 18.9% K/4.8% BB/41.5% GB. The Twins signed him in 2024, but he missed the season due to an elbow injury.

The Yankees need depth, and he provides that. He isn’t exciting, but he can provide some innings, if needed.

As a fun sidenote, he was a part of the 12-player trade between the Marlins and Blue Jays in 2012. The notable names in that deal were Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrleand Josh Johnson.

George Lombard Jr. was the highest riser in the MLB Pipeline update, which is (very) good news. The bad news is that none of their other prospects are on the list. I think the system is in a down period. I am never afraid to say that. Whether or not the next wave of pitchers in Hudson Valley/Tampa can improve that standing is to be determined. Whether some bats beyond Lombard Jr. can emerge to ease the pain is to be determined. We may not get those answers until later this year and into 2026.

Beeter needed 17 pitches (12 strikes). He reached 96.2 MPH and generated four whiffs with his fastball/slider combo.
RHP Wilking Rodriguez0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
A struggle for Rodriguez, though he reached 98.8 MPH with his 4-seamer (averaged 97.8)
LHP Rob Zastryzny0.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Eric Reyzelman0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
The skies opened up before Reyzelman threw a pitch.

Somerset (14-19)

Their game against Portland was postponed. They will attempt to make it up on Thursday.

Hudson Valley (23-10) (Lost to Aberdeen, 7-6, in 10 innings)

RF Brendan Jones1-for-3, SF, RBI, R, SB (15), BB
Jones seems to do something in every game.
DH Roc Riggio0-for-4, RBI, R, BB, 3 K
1B Parks Harber1-for-2, RBI, R, K
I am not sure why Harber left the game.
  1B Duncan Pastore0-for-2, BB, K
LF Jackson Castillo0-for-5, RBI, 2 K
C Omar Martinez: 4-for-5, HR (6), 2 RBI, R
Martinez is 17-for-39 (.436) in May (3 doubles, 5 HR, 12 RBI, 12 R, 7 BB, 9 K). This was his second 4-hit effort this month.
2B Jose Colmenares0-for-4, HBP, 2 K
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-5, 3 K
3B Josh Moylan1-for-1, 2B (6), R, 4 BB
Reaching base five times will always impress.
CF Luis Durango2-for-4, R, HBP, 2 K
Durango’s rehab stint is over. This is the 22-year-old’s High-A debut. If you don’t remember, the Yankees chose him in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft last winter (Cleveland).

LHP Kyle Carr3.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
3.20 ERA (25.1 IP, 20 H, 11 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 19 K). A mixed bag of stuff in his 2025 profile.
RHP Bryce Warrecker2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
0.56 ERA (16 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 3 BB, 22 K). Warrecker is dominating out of the pen.
RHP Hayden Merda2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
3.68 ERA (14.2 IP, 12 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 19 K)
RHP Ocean Gabonia (L, 0-2): 1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (15-19) (Defeated Palm Beach, 9-1)

C Edgleen Perez0-for-3, R, CS (1), 2 BB, 2 K
.196/.378/.227 in 127 PA. His patient approach is apparent.
C Engelth Urena0-for-4, 2 K
LF Dillon Lewis1-for-3, 3B (2), RBI, R, BB, K
.204/.280/.398 in 125 PA (6 doubles, 2 triples, 4 HR, 14 RBI, 18 R, 7-for-8 SB). We know Lewis has speed. It’s good to see some pop showing up as well. Yes, the bat tool needs more work. That’s why he is here.
SS Juan Matheus1-for-3, CS (5), 2 K
RF Austin Green1-for-3, 2B (3), RBI, R
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-2, R, BB, 2 K
2B Hans Montero2-for-4, 2 HR (3), 4 RBI, 2 R, K
Montero’s first career multi-HR game (also tied his best for RBI)
CF Marshall Toole1-for-3, 2B (3), R, BB, K
.294/.392/.426 in 79 PA (3 doubles, 3 triples, 5 RBI, 13 R, 7-for-7 SB).
3B Owen Cobb1-for-4, 2B (5), RBI, K
8 of Cobb’s 12 hits have gone for extra bases (5 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR)

RHP Andrew Landry (W, 1-3): 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, HR
A much-needed performance for Landry (easily the best in his young career)
LHP Jayvien Sandridge1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Sandridge is on a rehab stint from Scranton. The 26-year-old was signed to a minor league contract last winter. Throughout his minor league career, Sandridge has struck out 303 hitters in 205.2 innings. The issue? He has allowed 168 walks. To give you an example of his insanity, he struck out 95 and walked 49 in 61 innings last year.
RHP Chris Veach1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
1.98 ERA (13.2 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 9 BB, 22 K)
RHP Brandon Decker1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
1.88 ERA (14.1 IP, 14 H, 7 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 5 BB, 17 K). Veach and Decker are shining in their debut campaigns and should be promotion candidates sometime this year.

FCL (5-3) (Split a doubleheader against the Tigers)

Game 1 (Lost, 7-3)

LF Brando Mayea1-for-3, R, K
RF Brennen Davis2-for-3, 2B (1), HR (2), RBI, R, SB (1)
As I like to say, Davis hitting in the FCL is like a high schooler in a Little League game. He shouldn’t be here much longer.
CF Cam Eden0-for-2, K
The speedy depth piece is on a rehab stint.
  CF Isael Arias1-for-1, HR (1), 2 RBI, R
The 19-year-old hit one HR in 38 games in the DSL last year (his professional debut).
SS Santiago Gomez2-for-3, CS (1)

RHP J.T. Etheridge4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K
Etheridge has 17 strikeouts in 8.1 innings. Yes, he is too old for this level and shouldn’t be here long.

Game 2 (Won, 6-0)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-3, 2 R, BB, K
.321/.424/.536 in 33 PA. He is on a 7-game hitting streak.
C Manuel Palencia: 2-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, R
3B Santiago Gomez1-for-3, RBI
9-for-24. He has hit safely in all six of his games.
LF Gabriel Lara1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, R
Lara hitting his first HR before stealing a base is a story in its own right.

LHP Xavier Rivas4.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K
Rivas’s first two professional appearances:  8.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 13 K. He was their 16th-round pick in the 2024 draft (Ole Miss).
RHP Mariano Salomon (W, 2-0): 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

DSL (0-0)

Their season starts in June.

Yankees MILB 4/10: Jackson Castillo: 2 Doubles, 6 RBI

Notes:

RHP McKinley Moore and OF Christopher Familia have been moved to the organization’s Development List.

The Development List was introduced in 2021, and its purpose is what you think it is. If a player has something to work on, and the organization wants them to do so outside of game competition, the Development List is there for them to use.

Scranton (6-5)

Their game against Rochester was postponed.  Tomorrow’s weather doesn’t look promising.

Somerset (2-4) (Defeated Reading, 4-1)

3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4, RBI, CS (1), K
CF Spencer Jones: 1-for-3, RBI, SB (2), BB, K
.263/.462/.474 in 26 PA (1 double, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 5 R, 2-for-2 SB, 6 BB, 8 K)
C Rafael Flores0-for-2, SB (2), 2 BB, K
6-for-21 (2 HR, 5 RBI, 2 R, 2-for-2 SB, 4 BB, 8 K)

SS Alexander Vargas: 2-for-4, 2B (3), RBI, CS (1), K
6-for-12 (3 doubles, 3 RBI, 0 BB, 1 K). This is a continuation of his strong spring training.
2B Max Burt0-for-2, R, SB (2), BB, K

RHP Clarke Schmidt4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Schmidt could be in an MLB rotation as soon as next week.
RHP Cam Schlittler: (W, 1-0): 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
10.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 12 K

Hudson Valley (4-2) (Defeated Brooklyn, 8-3)

CF Brendan Jones0-for-3, R, 2 SB (3), 2 BB, 2 K
2-for-21 (1 double, 1 triple, 3 RBI, 2 R, 3-for-3 SB, 4 BB, 10 K). Jones is 21-for-21 stealing bases in his short career.
SS George Lombard Jr.0-for-2, 3 R, SB (2), 3 BB, K
Lombard had four 3+ BB games in 2024 (including one 4 BB game)
LF Jackson Castillo: 3-for-5, 2 2B (2), 6 RBI, SB (2), K
Castillo swats a pair of 3-run doubles. Interestingly, this is not a new best for him for RBI. He knocked in 7 runs on August 13, 2024.
C Omar Martinez0-for-3, 2 BB, 3 K
2B Jose Colmenares0-for-5, 4 K
1B Josh Moylan1-for-4, R, 2 K
DH Antonio Gomez1-for-4, 2 K
RF Coby Morales1-for-3, R, BB, K
3B Brenny Escanio0-for-2, 2 R, SB (3), 2 BB

RHP Josh Grosz2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K
The 6’4″ Grosz had a solid debut season in 2024 (24 games (23 starts), 7-8, 3.85 ERA; 121.2 IP, 101 H, 14 HR, 52 BB, 131 K). He had his best ERA in seven starts at this level (2.77). He was the Yankees’ 11th-round pick in 2023 (East Carolina).
LHP Will Brian: (W, 1-0)  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
RHP Bryce Warrecker2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Impressive outing for the 6’8″ Warrecker. Like many kids his size, he needs to work on his command/control.
RHP Hayden Merda1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Huey Morrill1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (4-2) (Defeated Fort Myers, 4-1)

SS Roderick Arias: 2-for-4, 2B (2), 2 SB (3), BB, K
Arias needed this night in a bad way.
LF Brian Sanchez0-for-2, SB (2), BB, 2 K
Sanchez left the game after striking out in the 5th inning.
  LF Dillon Lewis0-for-1, K
C Engelth Urena0-for-2, R, 2 HBP, 2 K
Urena is off to a 1-for-17 start, though he does have seven walks and two HBP.
3B Parks Harber1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, R, K
Harber hit one homer in 23 games in last year’s debut season.
RF Tyler Wilson0-for-3, CS (2), BB, K
2B Austin Green0-for-3, R, HBP
1B Josue Gonzalez0-for-3, BB, 2 K
CF Marshall Toole1-for-4, K
DH Duncan Pastore1-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, R
Signed as an undrafted free agent last year, Pastore went 10-for-27 in ten games with four stolen bases. He is still looking for his first career extra-base hit.

LHP Griffin Herring4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 6 K
10.1 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 13 K. I’d say that’s a nice start to one’s professional career.
RHP Sean Hermann: (W, 1-0)  2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Chris Veach1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Tony Rossi (S, 1): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Rossi’s first career save. He was pumping mid-90s sinkers tonight.

FCL (0-0)

Their season starts on May 3rd.

DSL (0-0)

Their season starts in June.

Yankees MILB 8/30: Roderick Arias Homers, Drives Home 4

News:

Nothing fit for print.

Scranton (73-55) (Lost two games to Rochester)

Game 1 (Lost, 6-2)

2B Caleb Durbin1-for-1, 2B (20), SB (25)
I don’t know why Durbin was pulled. As you may suspect, he didn’t play in Game 2. The game log doesn’t tell us anything—he wasn’t pulled after the double or stolen base. We’ll see if anything comes of it. As you may know, Durbin has a few injuries over the last two seasons. Last season, he suffered a non-contact injury that kept him out of action for several weeks. He missed a few months this season after being hit by a pitch.  This doesn’t make him “injury-prone”.  For all we know, Durbin will be back tomorrow.
   2B Jahmai Jones1-for-3, 2B (5), RS, K
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-3, SB (14), BB, 2 K

DH-C J.C. Escarra0-for-1, 2 BB, K
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-2, RBI, BB, K
  PR Duke Ellis0-for-0
Nothing happened to Narvaez – they just wanted to give Ellis a PR opportunity. This was Ellis’ debut as a member of the Yankees organization.
  P Scott Effross0-for-0
RF Greg Allen0-for-3, K

LHP Tanner Tully: (L, 2-7) 4.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, HR
RHP Joey Gerber0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Lou Trivino1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Trivino’s first rehab appearance for Scranton (he was rehabbing for Somerset up until now). He used his entire arsenal, maxing out at 94.6 with his sinker.
RHP Scott Effross1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
For Scranton: 3.75 ERA (24 IP, 21 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 2 HR, 6 BB, 22 K).

Game 2 (Lost, 4-1)

3B Jorbit Vivas: 1-for-2, SF, RBI
CF Jasson Dominguez2-for-3
Dominguez has 8 multi-hit efforts in his last 14 games. He must be called up in September. It would be malpractice to not do it.
SS Oswald Peraza0-for-3
LF Taylor Trammell0-for-3, 2 K
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-3, K

RHP Yoendrys Gomez: (L, 2-5) 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR
3.93 ERA (71 IP, 51 H, 33 R, 31 ER, 10 HR, 36 BB, 75 K). I thought Gomez was going to have a bigger MLB impact this season. I don’t know what 2025 holds, but I think he will be traded this winter.

Somerset (64-58) (Lost to Reading, 2-0. Portland won to take a 2.5-game lead in the second-half race)

3B Jon Berti1-for-3, K
Berti is 4-for-22 with a homer during his rehab stint.
   2B Anthony Seigler0-for-1, K
1B Anthony Rizzo0-for-3
Rizzo is 2-for-11 with a homer during his rehab stint.
   1B Tyler Hardman0-for-0, CS (2), BB
CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, 2 K
Jones has a 6-game hitting streak. You are correct if your perception is that Jones strikes out often when he doesn’t earn a hit. During this hitting streak, he is 11-for-23 with 8 strikeouts. During August, he is 29-for-88 (.330) with 9 walks and 37 strikeouts. His BABIP this month is well over .500. His profile is, to put it bluntly, equal parts crazy and baffling.
C Rafael Flores0-for-3, BB, 2 K
LF Grant Richardson0-for-3, K
RF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, K
DH Jared Wegner0-for-3, 2 K
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-3, CS (8), K

RHP Cody Poteet3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
During rehab: 0.96 ERA (9.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 11 K). Since lane discussions are the rage, there might not be a lane for Poteet in September. However, there is nothing wrong with having him in the minors for depth.
RHP Colby White1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
3.81 ERA (28.1 IP, 22 H, 15 R, 12 ER, 3 HR, 21 BB, 36 K). The Yankees claimed him off waivers from the Rays back on May 9th. The Yankees designated him for assignment on May 20th but were able to keep him.
LHP Ben Shields: (L, 2-2)  4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Since promotion: 3.14 ERA (43 IP, 37 H, 18 R, 15 ER, 2 HR, 16 BB, 49 K). Overall, Shields is up to 97 IP (121/28 K/BB) in his debut season.

Hudson Valley (66-57) (Lost to Jersey Shore, 6-3. The BlueClaws are back within one game for the second-half title)

2B Roc Riggio: 0-for-4, BB, 2 K
He didn’t play last night after leaving the game early on Wednesday. He was back tonight.
SS George Lombard Jr.: 3-for-5, 2B (5), 2 RBI, K
Lombard Jr. has four straight multi-hit efforts and a 5-game hitting streak (he has one double in each game).  He started 1-for-28 at this level but is up to .209 (18-for-86). He is striking out at a lesser rate since joining Hudson Valley as well.
3B Josh Moylan1-for-5
RF Garrett Martin: 1-for-3, HBP, 2 K
DH Omar Martinez0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, K
CF Jackson Castillo0-for-4
LF Brendan Jones2-for-3, 2B (1), RBI, RS, BB, K
Jones is 8-for-28 (.286) since his promotion. Many of their 2024 draftees/undrafted free agents are off to solid starts, but Jones is standing out.
C Antonio Gomez0-for-4, 3 K
1B Kiko Romero0-for-2, RS, 2 BB

LHP Kyle Carr: (L, 1-8) 4 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Record aside, Carr was pitching well recently before tonight’s effort. Season: 4.86 ERA (100 IP, 93 H, 66 R, 54 ER, 5 HR, 53 BB, 91 K)
RHP Blane Abeyta2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

4.73 ERA (80 IP, 73 H, 45 R, 42 ER, 7 HR, 41 BB, 81 K)

Tampa (51-69) (Defeated Bradenton, 9-6. I thought they were playing two games today, but I was mistaken. The doubleheader is scheduled for tomorrow)

SS Roderick Arias3-for-5, HR (12), 4 RBI, 2 RS, SB (32)
.230/.331/.385 in 517 PA (19 doubles, 7 triples, 12 HR, 71 RBI, 70 R, 32-for-45 SB, 12.2% BB, 31.3% K). There is a chance that Arias can get his K% below 30%, which would be amazing. When a player stays healthy and gets to the plate 517 times, it is easier for them to adjust. That is a part of my Baseball Prospects 101 course.
CF Willy Montero1-for-5, 2B (23), RBI, K
Montero is 24-for-88 (.273) in August with 8 doubles, a homer, and 12 RBI.
LF Tyler Wilson1-for-4, RS, BB
2B-3B Hans Montero2-for-5, 2B (8), RS
RF Dillon Lewis1-for-5
1B Parks Harber2-for-5, 2 2B (5), 2 RBI, RS, K
Harber is 16-for-61 (.262/.375/.459; 5 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 14 RBI, 4-for-4 SB).
DH JoJo Jackson2-for-4, RS, 2 K
Jackson’s first career multi-hit effort.
3B-2B Owen Cobb1-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, BB
Cobb is 12-for-44 (3 doubles, 7 RBI, 10 R, 7-for-7 SB). The undrafted free agent signing played for Stanford, so he has big school pedigree.
C Diomedes Hernandez1-for-2, SF, RBI, RS, BB

RHP Bryce Warrecker: (W, 2-5)  5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
A solid performance for the 6’8″ Warrecker.
LHP Rafelin Nivar: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 K
RHP Luis Arejula1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
2.81 ERA (51.1 IP, 41 H, 22 R, 16 ER, 3 HR, 24 BB, 47 K). This includes the 22-year-old’s stint for Hudson Valley, where he pitched pretty well.
RHP Jordy Luciano1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Cade Austin (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
The 22-year-old earns his first career save. Season: 3.89 ERA (44 IP, 33 H, 22 R, 19 ER, 7 HR, 14 BB, 47 K)

Yankees MILB 7/31: Jesus Rodriguez: HR, 4 RBI

News:

Brian Cashman said Jack Flaherty‘s medical records didn’t scare the Yankees. Without any evidence to support my theory, I think the Tigers and Yankees had a deal in place (whether the Cardinals were involved, who knows?). The Yankees saw the medicals and tried to amend the terms. The Tigers didn’t like the “secondary” prospects the Yankees switched to (which was confirmed by Bryan Hoch tonight I honestly wrote that sentence before Hoch’s tweet). If true, Cashman and Ken Rosenthal are at least partially telling the truth.

Regardless, the Yankees didn’t have a “wow” deadline. Hardly anyone did. Most of the best players rumored to be on the market went nowhere. While I wish the Yankees did more, this is a good thing. Why? Because I don’t think the Yankees would have been able to compete with other teams regarding prospect packages for top players. Do we think the Yankees had the chips for Tarik Skubal or Garrett CrochetI don’t.

Scranton (57-45) (Squeaked past Louisville, 2-1)

CF Jasson Dominguez1-for-3, RS, BB
Dominguez’s hitting streak ended yesterday but he still owns a 12-game on-base streak.

LHP Josh Maciejewski2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
The Railriders’ pitching staff may be running on fumes soon. They’ve had to adjust over the past week. Luckily, Edgar Barclay gave them some length on Tuesday.
LHP Oddanier Mosqueda (W, 6-0): 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
3.71 ERA (51 IP, 32 H, 25 R, 21 ER, 5 HR, 28 BB, 64 K). Under the old rules (didn’t have to face three batters, rosters expanding to 40), Mosqueda would be a September call-up candidate. He is holding left-handed hitters to a .118 batting average.
RHP Nick Burdi1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Burdi has options, so they can place him here after his rehab stint ends.
LHP Victor Gonzalez0.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K

Durbin is 2-for-17 with four walks and two strikeouts since being placed here.
  3B Alexander Vargas0-for-1, K

C Jesus Rodriguez2-for-6, HR (3), 4 RBI, 2 RS, SB (1)
Rodriguez has homered in back-to-back games. Over his last three games, he has played 1B/3B/C, showing us his unique versatility profile.
1B Rafael Flores3-for-6, 2B (4), HR (6), RBI, RS, 3 K
Since promotion: .239/.325/.440 in 123 PA with 4 doubles and 6 homers (3 HR in last 7 games).
DH Tyler Hardman0-for-3, SF, RBI, 2 RS, HBP

4.63 ERA (105 IP, 92 H, 59 R, 54 ER, 18 HR, 41 BB, 107 K). Dees’ gas tank may be closing in on empty. The reliever-to-starter transition isn’t easy.

RHP Eric Reyzelman (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
A performance like this stands out in a wild scorefest. At this level: 2.89 ERA (9.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 15 K). With Jack Neely gone, Reyzelman is probably the top relief prospect in the system.

Hudson Valley (48-48) (Defeated Jersey Shore, 6-5. They scored 4 in the bottom of the 9th to win it)

Moylan hit a game-winning 3-run single in the bottom of the 9th (the third run scored on an error). He is hitting .252/.372/.372 in 301 PA and has three straight multi-hit games. The most important thing is that his power is starting to show up.
