Yankees MILB 6/10: Pitching Rules the Night

Notes:

RHP Bryce Cunningham‘s return from the injured list was short-lived, as he is back on the list after only one start.

Cunningham has arguably impressed the most from last year’s pitching class, compiling a 1.93 ERA (3.33 FIP) over 46.2 innings with a 25.7% K, 6% BB, and 45.4% GB.

The Yankees released veteran LHP Brandon Leibrandt. In 41 innings for Scranton, Leibrandt posted a 2.85 ERA (4.70 FIP). He was recently placed on the inactive list before his release.

According to Erik Boland, RHP Jake Cousins has halted his rehab stint due to “feeling something” in his elbow. That’s never good. A pleasant surprise for the 2024 club, Cousins compiled a 2.37 ERA (4.06 FIP) with a 34.2% K and 12.9% BB over 38 innings.

Unless you live under a boulder, you already know about Giancarlo Stanton‘s rehab stint. It will be interesting to see what the Yankees do with their roster when he returns. No doubt that Pablo Reyes is their most dispensable player, but he does nothing more than occupy bench space. The biggest question is what happens with Ben Rice, who figures to lose the most playing time. Rice’s numbers have dipped lately, but a look at his Savant page shows a strong hitter who may be hitting in bad luck (his June BABIP is .176).

1.64 ERA (11 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 17 K). These are the outings that will get him back to MLB. He earns his first professional save in the process. 

Somerset (26-30) (Defeated Portland, 8-1)

2B Roc Riggio: 2-for-5, 2 2B (3), RBI, 2 R, K
Since promotion: 9-for-27 (3 doubles, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 6 R, 1-for-1 SB). Riggio has yet to draw a walk, but who in their right mind would complain about this output?  He has shown the ability to take walks in the lower minors.

If he is healthy, the rehab stint should be a quick one.
  PR-DH Cole Gabrielson: 0-for-0, R
As you should know by now, rehabbing players don’t play full games at first. The fact that Stanton doesn’t need to get any time in the field, however, hastens his stint.
SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-3, R, BB
CF Spencer Jones: 1-for-4, 2B (6), R, SB (8), K
16 of his 27 hits have gone for extra bases (6 doubles, 10 HR). You can’t look past the strikeout rate as that is the one thing that will keep him from reaching his potential. That said, he is hitting more flyballs and showing off his power.
C Rafael Flores: 2-for-4, R, K
Flores has a 5-game hitting streak (8-for-21). 
RF Brendan Jones: 1-for-3, SF, 3 RBI
Hopefully, Jones is starting to get more comfortable here.

RHP Bryce Cunningham (Hudson Valley) was activated from the 7-day injured list today. He started in tonight’s game.

1B/OF Dominic Smith, released last week, signed with the San Francisco Giants. To make room, the Giants designated LaMonte Wade Jr. for assignment. Between 2023 and 2024, Wade Jr. was a solid offensive performer, hitting .258/.376/.401 (120 OPS+). However, the 31-year-old is hitting .167/.275/.271 in 2025. I wouldn’t expect the Yankees to be interested, as he is a left-handed hitting 1B/corner outfielder. They don’t need that.

His lack of innings is due to the Yankees spacing out his appearances as if he is a starter, even though he is exclusively a reliever this year. If he is never starting again, they will eventually ask him to pitch on shorter rest.

.159/.309/.257 in 139 PA (8 doubles, 1 HR, 13 RBI, 15 R, 12-for-15 SB, 17.3% BB, 30.9% K). I am trying to find anything to give you confidence. His profile is similar to 2024 with a higher BB% and much lower BABIP. Yes, it is valid to counter that with “It’s his second Low-A season – shouldn’t his profile be better, not similar?” 
CF Brian Sanchez: 1-for-4, R, SB (12), BB, 3 K
.286/.354/.437 in 144 PA (11 doubles, 4 triples, 22 RBI, 12 R, 12-for-16 SB, 9.7% BB, 26.4% K). I won’t tell you that Jace Avina and Sanchez are future All-Stars, but they acquired solid minor league assets for Jake Bauer.

We are still waiting for the rookie league power to show up (he does have five homers in 48 games), but he is taking his walks (14.2%).

Decker tossed 53 pitches in his longest career appearance. It is fair to assume that they are stretching him out to start.  GameCast picked up six pitches, reaching 93.2 MPH with his 4-seamer and sinker.

Bauman has been pushed to the bullpen, though his appearances are being spread out as if he is a starter. He has struggled in his debut campaign (8.31 ERA in 34.2 IP with a 34/30 K/BB).

Yankees MILB 5/29: Spencer Jones Returns

Notes:

OF Spencer Jones, out since May 3rd due to an “intercostal injury,” returned to the Somerset lineup tonight. He joined Jazz Chisholm Jr., who is in Somerset on a rehab stint.

Unfortunately, when someone comes off the injured list, someone has to go. The Yankees have released OF Grant Richardson. Drafted in the 17th round in 2021 out of Indiana, Richardson struggled between Somerset/Scranton this year, hitting .198/.288/.363 with three homers and a stolen base in 32 games. In 2022 and 2023, he accomplished a double-double in home runs and stolen bases. Last season, he just missed, hitting 9 homers while stealing 16 bases. Hopefully, he finds work elsewhere.

It’s hilarious that this franchise, adamant about moving Chisholm Jr. back to his natural position, may move him to third to accommodate the remnants of DJ LeMahieu. We would be laughing if the Colorado Rockies did something like this.

Yankees MILB 4/22: Brendan Beck is Cruising

Notes:

Yoendrys Gomez being designated for assignment surprised me. I thought that Ryan Yarbrough would be the first long reliever on the chopping block, but that wasn’t the case.

Can Gomez get through waivers?  I have learned through the years that I am terrible at perceived value. I see a talented kid. Others may see damaged goods. Furthermore, any team that claims him has the same problem the Yankees had: They can’t option him to the minors. If he clears waivers, he doesn’t have enough service time to reject an outright assignment by the Yankees.

If you look at nothing but ERA, Gomez is having an effective season. Under the hood, however, he isn’t.

DJ LeMahieu began his rehab assignment in Somerset today.  Clayton Beeter‘s rehab was moved from Tampa to Somerset.

Quick commentary: Anyone who follows the minors knows that Triple-A is an offensive haven. It used to be that the PCL was crazy while the International League played more fairly. Nowadays, both leagues are offense-first (the PCL (teams average 6.26 R/G) is still the king of offense, as the International League is at 5.57). This doesn’t mean you disqualify kids just because they hit well in an offensive league. Keep it in mind when you look at boxscores, but don’t dismiss what you are looking at based on that alone.

It is fun to do “what has he done lately?” stats – but his full season is now speaking for itself.  By the way, one way to develop your game is by playing it. Dominguez has 1,037 plate appearances over the last two seasons. Does he deserve to play in Scranton for a few weeks? I think so – maybe they will get him there before the end of August.

Yankees MILB 8/8: Jasson Dominguez: 3 More Hits

News:

The Yankees have released three prospects. Outfielders Anthony Garcia and Aldenis Sanchez are no longer members of the Hudson Valley Renegades, while RHP Blas Castano is gone from the Somerset Patriots. Additionally, the Yankees have designated RHP Deivi Garcia for assignment. Because we are beyond the trade deadline, Garcia is not eligible to be traded. If he clears waivers, he can be outrighted to the minors or released.

Anthony Garcia showed off his three outcome chops in 2022, as he hit .195/.372/.369 (121 wRC+) over 384 PA with 15 home runs. This season, in his first taste of High-A, his walk rate dropped from 21.6% to 15.1%. His wRC+ dropped to 85.

Sanchez, acquired for Mike Ford, is a speedy outfielder who hasn’t been able to develop the hit tool. He is hitting only .225/.300/.352 (79 wRC+) with 14 stolen bases.

Castano was ranked as the Yankees’ #26 prospect by Fangraphs prior to 2023. For Somerset this season, he pitched to a 4.76 ERA (4.66 FIP) over 45.1 innings with a 12.5% BB and 21% K. The walk rate is the big thing in this profile, as he was known for his ability to throw strikes in the lower minors.

The Yankees tried to convert Deivi Garcia to a full-time reliever in 2023, and it hasn’t gone well. Once regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in the system, he fell off a few years ago with plenty of rumors as to why.

There are so many promotions today that I could write an entire entry on them alone. I won’t dig into that deeply up here – you will see blurbs below as they make their debuts at new levels.

My opinion is clear: Get him some playing time in 2023, whether that is a week from now or a few weeks from now.

The Yankees added RHP Keynan Middleton from the Chicago White Sox for RHP Juan Carela (Rule 5 eligible).

The Yankees needed some bullpen innings (I guess) and acquired a pure rental to fill those innings. I guess that excites someone.

This year for the White Sox, the 29-year-old pitched to a 3.96 ERA in 39 games. He is showing off an impressive strikeout rate (30.1%) and, by emphasizing his changeup more, he has increased his GB rate to 50%. It was 26% in Arizona in 2022.

If Middleton started 2023 with the Yankees, we would be touting him as a major Matt Blake success story. While that is well and good, I am not sure what he adds to this bullpen for two months. He would be a nice complimentary acquisition of something bigger. As a lone acquisition, what’s the point?

Carela (21) pitched to a 3.67 ERA (3.73 FIP) over 83.1 innings for High-A Hudson Valley. His 31.1% K rate shows some of his potential, but he doesn’t possess the velocity that organizations look for. For Chicago, he represents a decent get for a rental relief pitcher. One can project him as a future reliever who focuses heavily on his breaking stuff.

The Yankees made a smaller trade for RHP Spencer Howard, giving up only cash considerations to the Texas Rangers. Howard has done nothing to thrill you in MLB, but he was ranked as the 27th prospect in MLB by Baseball America in 2021. Storing his arm in Triple-A hurts nobody, so this doesn’t bother me. If the Yankees made a meaningful acquisition today, his news would have been buried.
