Yankees MILB 5/9: George Lombard Jr.’s Multi-Hit Effort

Notes:

OF Jace Avina was placed on the 7-day injured list for Hudson Valley. The 21-year-old, acquired in December 2023 from the Brewers along with OF Brian Sanchez for OF Jake Bauers, is hitting .308/.443/.418 (154 wRC+) with a 15.7% BB and 22.6% K. He is Rule 5 eligible this winter.

It’s Mother’s Day weekend. Expect delays in my reports on Saturday and Sunday with little (if any) real-time BlueSky updates.

Due to some feedback, I have updated the injury log below. It is now sorted by last name, with the Top 30 organizational prospects listed at the top.

Injury Log

Scranton (17-17) (Their game against Rochester was canceled, and they will not make it up. They are making up the Thursday rainout with a doubleheader tomorrow.  They posted the lineup (same as yesterday’s), and it is below.)

CF Everson Pereira0-for-0
2B DJ LeMahieu0-for-0
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-0
C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-0
When Jasson Dominguez “graduated,” Pipeline moved Rodriguez into the Top 30. The report wasn’t flattering, as they portray him as a prospect with an extremely aggressive approach at the plate. Additionally, while the Yankees play him at multiple positions, he supposedly isn’t all that good at any of them. Some would argue that a good offensive utility player is worth potentially bad defense. I agree with that notion, but Rodriguez has to prove he is a viable offensive player. I don’t hide behind the fact that I am bullish because he continues to hit, even if the approach isn’t perfect. I can’t claim is that it will translate at the highest level. I have no idea.
RF Bryan De La Cruz0-for-0
LF Dominic Smith0-for-0
3B Jose Rojas0-for-0
DH Alex Jackson0-for-0
SS Braden Shewmake0-for-0

RHP Zach McAllister0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Until the Yankees find starters, McAllister can put himself on the map for spot starts. However, he hasn’t pitched well thus far.

Somerset (13-18) (Defeated Akron, 7-6, in 11 innings)

2B George Lombard Jr.2-for-4, RBI, 3 R, SB (1), BB
Lombard Jr. playing second base two days in a row may raise an eyebrow. Do I think it is meaningful for the 2025 Yankees? No. He is 3-for-15 with two walks and three strikeouts since his promotion. Overall, he is 12-for-14 stealing bases.
C Rafael Flores1-for-5, K
DH Dylan Jasso: 2-for-5, 2B (6), RBI, 2 K
Jasso’s first extra-base hit in May (11 in April). He didn’t compile an extra-base hit in his first five April games before getting hot. Maybe this will spark another streak.
CF Garrett Martin2-for-4, 2B (6), SF, 2 RBI, R, K
I like it when a player has a good game the night after I bring up their low BABIP (.200 entering tonight).
RF Jared Wegner0-for-4, R, BB, 2 K
LF Tyler Hardman1-for-5, 2 K
2B Alexander Vargas2-for-4, 3B (2), RBI, R, BB, K
Vargas is 9-for-25 (.360) with a double and a pair of triples in May.
SS Max Burt1-for-5, 2B (4), 2 RBI, 2 K
His 2-run double in the 11th provided the winning margin.
1B Diomedes Hernandez0-for-4, SAC, 3 K
The 20-year-old C/1B is here because they need a body. He has never played above Low-A Tampa before his three Double-A games this year.

RHP Baron Stuart4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, HR
RHP Cole Ayers1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Since promotion: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 5 K
RHP Indigo Diaz1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Ryan Anderson: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Jordany Ventura (W, 1-0) 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Harrison Cohen (S, 2): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
4.09 ERA (11 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 15 K)

Hudson Valley (21-9) (Defeated Wilmington, 4-1. This sometimes comes up, and I will address it:  Wilmington is not good. Their offense is the worst in the South Atlantic League, and their pitching isn’t much better. While context is important in sports, these are prospects working on their craft. I will celebrate their successes without worrying about how good the competition is. If the prospects aren’t good enough, that will show itself in time.)

RF Brendan Jones1-for-4, 3B (2), RBI, R, BB, K
.252/.349/.421 in 126 PA (5 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 23 R, 13-for-16 SB, 11.9% BB, 17.5% K). Jones has 36 RBI and 39 runs in 50 career games.
DH Roc Riggio: 1-for-4, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K
3B Parks Harber2-for-5, 2B (2), CS (1), K
Since promotion: .325/.372/.450 in 43 PA. Overall, he is hitting .312/.405/.514 in 126 PA. Don’t rule out a second promotion this season.
CF Jackson Castillo0-for-4, BB, K
LF Coby Morales2-for-4, K
C Omar Martinez1-for-3, R, BB, K
Martinez has a 9-game hitting streak (15-for-34; 3 doubles, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 14 R, 7 BB, 9 K). This is not a “garden variety” hitting streak.
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-2, R, 2 BB, K
1B Josh Moylan0-for-3, BB, 2 K
SS Brenny Escanio1-for-3, RBI, R, SB (6), BB, K
Escanio is doing a good job getting on base (.404 OBP), and his teammates are converting that into runs (20 runs in 24 games).

RHP Josh Grosz: (W, 2-1)  6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K
4.30 ERA (23 IP, 21 H, 13 R, 11 ER, 2 HR, 9 BB, 31 K)
RHP Hayden Merda1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
4.26 ERA (12.2 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 HR, 8 BB, 16 K).
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
4.50 ERA (8 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 12 K)

Tampa (13-18) (Lost to Daytona, 7-2, in a lightning-shortened 7-inning game)

C Edgleen Perez0-for-3, BB, 2 K
.207/.375/.230 in 112 PA.
DH Engelth Urena0-for-3, 2 K
RF Dillon Lewis2-for-2, 3B (1), HR (4), RBI, 2 R, BB
May: 9-for-28 (2 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 9 R, 3 BB, 8 K).
SS Juan Matheus1-for-3, RBI, CS (4), K
LF Tyler Wilson2-for-3
2B Austin Green0-for-3, 2 K
1B Josue Gonzalez1-for-3, SB (7), 2 K
Gonzalez has stolen a base in three straight games.
CF Marshall Toole0-for-3, 2 K
3B Hans Montero0-for-3, 2 K

RHP Trystan Vrieling4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
His second rehab start (first one was in the FCL) went fine. He should be back in Somerset soon.
LHP Tanner Bauman: (L, 0-3) 2.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
It’s been a struggle for Bauman. All you can do is keep throwing him out there.

FCL (3-2) (Lost to the Blue Jays, 6-5, in an 8-inning game (extra innings). In the FCL, teams can determine whether to play a 7-inning or 9-inning game before it begins. We’ve started to see this at other levels after long rain delays.)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, R, 2 K
Mayea’s first home run since August 19, 2023. He is 5-for-20 with three doubles and a homer.
C Ediel Rivera0-for-3, R, SB (1), BB, K
LF Luis Durango0-for-2, R, CI, BB, K
1B Johan Contreras2-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, R, K
3B Santiago Gomez1-for-4, 2 RBI
After hitting .321/.421/.420 in 36 games here last season, he is 5-for-15 in 2025.

RHP Edinzo Marquez4.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
Marquez (20) pitched to a 3.45 ERA in 12 starts for the DSL squad last season (50/20 K/BB over 44.1 IP)
RHP Chance Nolan1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
This is the professional debut for the 25-year-old. This is a fun story, as Nolan was an Oregon State quarterback from 2020 to 2022. Last year, he pitched for NAIA Morningside. He pitched only 3.1 innings (3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 9 BB, 3 K). I would love to hear his full story, because it is a leap to go from college quarterback to NAIA pitcher (for only seven games) to affiliated baseball.  According to this article, he touched 97 MPH while at Morningside.

DSL (0-0)

Their season starts in June.

Yankees MILB 5/6: George Lombard Jr.’s Somerset Debut

Notes:

Outfielder Spencer Jones was placed on the injured list for Somerset, robbing us of a chance to see arguably the top two prospects in the system in the same lineup. In a related move, Christopher Familia was activated from the Development List.

RP Scott Effross (yes, he does exist) is on a rehab stint in the FCL.

Speaking of the FCL, 2B Roc Riggio was activated off the injured list for Hudson Valley. He played only two rehab games for the FCL squad before his activation.

DJ LeMahieu‘s rehab was moved up to Scranton.

Carlos Carrasco being DFA’d was not surprising from a performance perspective. The Yankees, however, remain short when it comes to starting pitchers. He could clear waivers and come back, but that’s hardly exciting. They can start Ryan Yarbrough for now, with the potential to see Allan Winans take a turn or two. It’s going to be a revolving door and evolving story until/unless they add someone more stable.

Since it happened after I posted my report on Sunday, SS George Lombard Jr. is now in Somerset. That’s news to nobody’s ears.  I agree with this move, as High-A was not challenging him.  Double-A is the ultimate test for every prospect, and Lombard Jr. will be the youngest player in the Eastern League. I know the fanbase doesn’t understand patience, but be patient. If he dominates Double-A from the jump, he might just be a unicorn. If he doesn’t, he is still a top prospect. It’s a win-win, and it will be fun to watch.

Injury Log

Gomez is 5-for-14 in his last four games.

RHP Bailey Dees: (L, 1-2)  4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR
5.96 ERA (22.2 IP, 26 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 5 HR, 14 BB, 25 K)
LHP Ryan Anderson1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Jordany Ventura1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Mason Vinyard1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

Hudson Valley (18-9) (Lost to Wilmington, 4-3. Wilmington’s Branden Boissiere hit a walk-off 2-run home run)

CF Brendan Jones: 1-for-4, K
DH Roc Riggio0-for-3, BB, 2 K
Riggio hit .221/.349/.397 in 480 PA at this level last season. He walked 14.8% of the time and stole 27 bases in 33 attempts.
RF Jace Avina1-for-4, 2B (7), R, K
Avina has five doubles in his last seven games.
LF Jackson Castillo0-for-3, BB, K
3B Parks Harber2-for-4, RBI
Harber is 8-for-25 with four RBI since his promotion.
1B Coby Morales0-for-4, 2 K

Colmenares was moved back to Hudson Valley with Lombard Jr.’s promotion to Somerset.
C Omar Martinez1-for-4, HR (2), RBI, R, 2 K
Martinez has two doubles and a homer in four May games (2 doubles, 1 HR in 20 April games)
SS Brenny Escanio1-for-3, R, CS (3), BB, K

LHP Kyle Carr5 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
2.08 ERA (21.2 IP, 13 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 9 BB, 17 K). His K% isn’t ideal but he is generating a lot of grounders (60% GB entering tonight; 9 groundouts tonight)
RHP Bryce Warrecker2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
0.77 ERA (11.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 3 BB, 17 K). Warrecker continues to impress in the early going. As a starter last year, he posted a 5.79 ERA (5.34 FIP) over 65.1 innings with a 10.2% BB and 15.7% K. Does this mean he will never start again? No. However, he is taking to the bullpen thus far, including a strikeout rate above 40%.
RHP Hayden Merda1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Tyrone Yulie (L, 1-1): 0.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR

Tampa (11-17) (Lost to Daytona, 10-7)

DH Edgleen Perez1-for-4, 2B (2), R, BB, 2 K
Perez has hit safely in four of five May games.

Sanchez leads the Florida State League with 9 doubles.
C Engelth Urena0-for-4, BB, K
LF Dillon Lewis0-for-5, K
SS Juan Matheus0-for-3, SB (8), BB, K
RF Tyler Wilson0-for-4, K
2B Austin Green0-for-4, K
1B Josue Gonzalez1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, R, SB (5), BB, K
3B Owen Cobb: 2-for-2, 2 2B (3), 3 R, SB (5), 2 BB
Cobb is 7-for-15 (3 doubles, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 8 R, 5-for-5 SB, 4 BB, 3 K). Nice start to his 2025 campaign.

RHP Andrew Landry (L, 0-3): 5 IP, 11 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, HR
8.18 ERA (22 IP, 38 H, 26 R, 20 ER, 3 HR, 10 BB, 21 K)
RHP Gus Hughes1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

FCL (2-1) (Knocked off the Phillies, 9-2)

CF Brando Mayea2-for-5, 2B (2), R, SB (1)
Mayea also doubled yesterday. It would be a nice boost to the system if Mayea has a breakout.
RF Luis Durango1-for-4, R, K
I assume, like with Riggio, that Durango’s rehab won’t last much longer.
C Ediel Rivera1-for-3, 2B (2), RBI, R, BB, 2 K
3-for-10 with a pair of doubles.
LF Isael Arias2-for-4, 2B (2), 2 RBI, 2 R
3B Luis Escudero1-for-4, 2 RBI, SB (2)
SS Kevin Verde2-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, R, K
The 19-year-old hits his first home run since 2023.
2B Gabriel Terrero1-for-3, 2B (1), RBI, 2 SB (2), CS (1), BB, K

RHP Scott Effross1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
A healthy Effross can help the bullpen. But can he regain his 2022 form?
RHP J.T. Etheridge (W, 1-0): 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K
Professional debut for the 23-year-old (yes, very old for this level) Etheridge. The Yankees signed him as an undrafted free agent (Louisiana-Lafayette) last August. He stands an impressive 6’5″.
RHP Hansel Rosario2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 K
RHP Alexis Paulino2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

DSL (0-0)

Their season starts in June.

Yankees MILB 7/20: Pitching Rules!

News

RHP Cody Morris cleared waivers and was outrighted to Scranton.

With Josh Maciejewski demoted to Scranton, my guess is that Yoendrys Gomez will get the call. That is a guess, but he is rested and conveniently on the 40-man roster. It appears the Yankees are not ready to promote Scott Effross.

Scranton (50-42) (Defeated Buffalo, 8-3, in 11 innings)

CF Brandon Lockridge2-for-5, 3 RBI, RS, BB
Yesterday, Lockridge went 0-for-5 with four strikeouts. I love baseball.
2B Jorbit Vivas1-for-5, RS, SB (9), HBP, K
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-6, RBI
Ramirez is 15-for-81 (.183) since his promotion. He is not ready to be a “savior,” and they don’t have a position for him anyway. If he played 3B, we would be having a discussion…
SS Oswald Peraza: 3-for-4, 2 2B (6), RBI, 2 RS, CS (4), 2 BB, K
Peraza reaches base five times. A few years ago, that would have created a buzz but much of his buzz is gone, and I am not sure who to blame for that.
DH T.J. Rumfield0-for-5, RS
3B Jeter Downs1-for-3, SF, RBI, SAC
1B J.C. Escarra4-for-5, 2B (1), RBI, 2 RS
Escarra was promoted here from Somerset. He will serve as a backup to Agustin Ramirez in addition to his 1B/3B duties. While this is his Scranton debut, it wasn’t his Triple-A debut. He played in 58 games for Triple-A Norfolk in 2021 before heading to the independent/Mexican leagues for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
RF Oscar Gonzalez1-for-3, RS, BB, HBP
LF Taylor Trammell0-for-4, SB (10), BB, 2 K

RHP Will Warren5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K
6.42 ERA (89.2 IP, 97 H, 70 R, 64 ER, 17 HR, 34 BB, 107 K). Two starts ago, he struck out 11 in six innings (1 R, 2 H). We’ll see if he is starting to find a groove. Left-handed batters have, to put it mildly, torched him this season (.315/.408/.566 entering today).
RHP Art Warren1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Yerry De Los Santos1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Alex Mauricio1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
0.93 ERA (29 IP, 19 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 33 K). He has been masterful this season.
LHP Anthony Misiewicz: (W, 3-2)  1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Phil Bickford1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (45-44) (Squeaked past Altoona, 2-1)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, 2B (14), 2 K
.238/.316/.403 in 342 PA (14 doubles, 3 triples, 10 HR, 46 RBI, 48 R, 18-for-22 SB, 9.6% BB, 37.1% K).  Is he the CF version of Oneil Cruz? That isn’t a bad comparison on paper, but Cruz reached Double-A at 20 (to be fair, Jones was still in college!) and struck out 25.7% of the time. That remains the one thing I can’t get over. Striking out 37.1% of the time in Double-A is a massive red flag. So, I do think Cruz is a good comparison when you factor in size and athleticism. I don’t think Jones is progressing as well as Cruz did.
3B Ben Cowles0-for-4, 3 K
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-4, RS, K
C Rafael Flores: 1-for-4, RBI, 3 K
How do you fix an 0-for-3, 3 K night? By hitting a walk-off RBI single!
DH Elijah Dunham: 1-for-3, RS, K
Dunham has hit safely in 21 of his last 22 games. He is 21-for-51 (.412) in July.
RF Grant Richardson1-for-3, 2B (19), K
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-3, RBI
LF Aaron Palensky0-for-3, 2 K
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-3, K

RHP Bailey Dees6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, HR
4.26 ERA (95 IP, 79 H, 50 R, 45 ER, 14 HR, 36 BB, 99 K). Due to the break, Dees hadn’t started since July 12th. I think he needed the time off and it paid dividends tonight.
RHP Danny Watson1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Watson’s overall numbers aren’t spectacular, but I think much of that was due to his return from injury. He has put together six scoreless outings in his last seven, lowering his ERA from 10.13 to 7.47.
RHP Luis Velasquez: (W, 3-2)  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
4.75 ERA (36 IP, 31 H, 27 R, 19 ER, 5 HR, 27 BB, 51 K)

Hudson Valley (43-44) (Lost, 4-3, in 11 innings)

2B Roc Riggio: 2-for-5, 3B (4), RS, 2 K
Riggio has two home runs and a triple in his last three games.
SS Jared Serna1-for-4, SF, 2 RBI
.252/.342/.435 in 374 PA (23 doubles, 12 HR, 55 RBI, 49 R, 10.4% BB, 15.8% K, 10-for-17 SB).
CF Jace Avina0-for-5, 3 K
.263/.347/.427 in 323 PA (22 doubles, 8 HR, 41 RBI, 38 R, 9.6% BB, 26.3% K, 4-for-5 SB).
DH Omar Martinez1-for-4, 2B (10), BB
.242/.378/.404 in 296 PA.
C Antonio Gomez0-for-5, 2 K
3B Josh Moylan1-for-4, 2B (9), RS, SB (2), BB
LF Christopher Familia1-for-3, 2B (3), RBI, HBP
  LF Cole Gabrielson0-for-0, BB
RF Anthony Hall0-for-5, 3 K
1B Kiko Romero2-for-4, RS, 2 SB (8)

RHP Blane Abeyta5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Cole Ayers2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
2.88 ERA (50 IP, 41 H, 20 R, 16 ER, 3 HR, 18 BB, 59 K)
RHP Mason Vinyard1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
3.56 ERA (30.1 IP, 24 H, 18 R, 12 ER, 2 HR, 19 BB, 43 K).
RHP Matt Keating2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
4.73 ERA (51.1 IP, 39 H, 30 R, 27 ER, 7 HR, 22 BB, 62 K)
RHP Luis Arejula: (L, 3-4)  1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
3.05 ERA (38.1 IP, 33 H, 18 R, 13 ER, 2 HR, 21 BB, 36 K)

Tampa (34-53) (Won two games against Bradenton)

Game 1 (Won, 2-1, in the conclusion of yesterday’s game. This game went 10 innings and was won on a walk-off error)

3B George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-3, RS, SB (26), 2 BB, K
This is Lombard Jr.’s third straight 2-hit effort.
SS Roderick Arias0-for-2, SF, RBI, SB (25), 2 BB, K
Arias has nine walks in his last seven games.
1B Dylan Jasso0-for-4, BB, K
CF Jackson Castillo0-for-4
RF Willy Montero1-for-4
2B Hans Montero0-for-4, 3 K
DH Coby Morales1-for-4, K
C Josue Gonzalez0-for-4, RS
LF Daury Arias0-for-4, K

RHP Chase Hampton3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Hampton retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced (hit a batter) and averaged 92 MPH (94 max). He threw 45 pitches (30 strikes) and should be coming to Somerset shortly.
RHP Aaron Nixon0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Nixon was used as a “bridge” between Hampton and Serna.
RHP Luis Serna1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
That bridge will be meaningless, as Serna did not return to this game.
RHP Ocean Gabonia2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
4.20 ERA (45 IP, 45 H, 24 R, 21 ER, 4 HR, 11 BB, 53 K).
RHP Osiel Rodriguez (W, 1-2): 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
2.42 ERA (44.2 IP, 22 H, 13 R, 12 ER, 6 HR, 22 BB, 53 K).

Game 2 (Won, 7-0)

3B George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-3, 2B (16), RBI, RS, K
Lombard’s OPS is up to .717. He owns a .360 slugging percentage. On June 9th, his SLG was .268. His progress is one of the highlights this season.
SS Roderick Arias1-for-3, K
He leads the FSL in triples (7), is 4th in RBI (45), and third in stolen bases (25).
1B Dylan Jasso0-for-3, RBI
CF Jackson Castillo1-for-3, 2B (16), RBI, K
Castillo has a .811 OPS in 70 games. It is fair to say that he has been one of the system’s biggest surprises this year.
DH Willy Montero0-for-3, 2 K
2B Hans Montero1-for-3, RS, SB (9), 2 K
RF Coby Morales: 3-for-3, 2 HR (4), 3 RBI, 3 RS
Morales’ first career multi-HR game.
C Diomedes Hernandez2-for-3, 2B (1), RBI, RS
The 19-year-old’s first Low-A extra-base hit.
LF Daury Arias0-for-3, RS

RHP Josh Grosz: (W, 3-5)  5.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
Last three starts: 15.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 17 K. This stretch comes after a tough emergency outing for Somerset. He could have easily been discouraged by that, but he has instead turned it up a notch. Season (for Tampa): 4.64 ERA (66 IP, 65 H, 47 R, 34 ER, 26 BB, 85 K). This is his debut season.
RHP Jordy Luciano: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Luciano (22) can dial it up into the mid-90s.

FCL (34-21) (Split a doubleheader with the FCL Tigers, essentially chopping two games off the schedule. They own a 1.5-game lead with three games left. Note: They don’t “make up” games in the FCL. If the Yankees win the division by 0.5 games over the Tigers, the Tigers don’t get to make up a game)

Game 1 (Lost, 8-3)

CF Brando Mayea2-for-4, 2B (2), 2 K
DH Edgleen Perez0-for-1, 2 RS, 3 BB
C Engelth Urena: 3-for-4, HR (8), 2 RBI, RS, CS (2)
His 8th HR in 37 games.
LF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, BB
SS Juan Matheus1-for-4, RBI

RHP Sean Boyle1.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
The 27-year-old Boyle is down here on a rehab stint. He made only 9 starts for Scranton last year.
LHP Will Brian1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Their 10th-round pick in 2022 (Eastern Kentucky) makes his first rehab appearance.

Game 2 (Won, 17-5)

CF Brando Mayea2-for-6, 3B (2), 3 RBI, 2 RS
Mayea, who has five 2-hit games in July (8 games played), is hitting .297/.384/.344 in 146 PA with a 25.3% K. He has a pair of doubles and triples and is 16-for-19 stealing bases. In my opinion, the 18-year-old is doing enough to get to Low-A Tampa, whether that is to finish this year or to start 2025.
C Edgleen Perez1-for-4, RS, BB, K
.289/.452/.384 in 208 PA. Perez has more walks (44) than strikeouts (33).
1B Engelth Urena0-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB
Urena is hitting .315/.429/.591 in 154 PA (11 doubles, 8 HR, 31 RBI, 32 R, 14.9% BB, 11.7% K). He is second in the league in OPS and third in home runs (he has played 15 fewer games than leader Jhonny Severino, who has 10 HR). He is a legitimate prospect with the bat. We’ll see what he is long-term with the glove.
LF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
.291/.384/.485 in 190 PA with 15 stolen bases in 18 attempts.
SS Juan Matheus3-for-5, 2 2B (9), 4 RBI, RS
.312/.418/.478 in 189 PA.  He is third in the league with 38 RBI.
DH Gabriel Terrero2-for-3, 3B (1), 2 RBI, 3 RS, SB (14), BB
2B Abrahan Ramirez3-for-4, 2B (14), RBI, 2 RS, BB
.351/.454/.519 in 184 PA. He has slowed down (.255/.321/.392 in July) but we didn’t expect him to hit .400 this season, right? He still ranks second in batting average.
RF Joel Mendez2-for-4, 3B (4), 2 RS, BB, 2 K
.301/.417/.569 after hitting .293/.363/.424 here last year. Likely not a top prospect, but he has done enough to get to Low-A.
3B Santiago Gomez2-for-4, HR (2), 5 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
The 20-year-old ties his best for RBI in a game. He is hitting .333/.438/.440 in 89 PA. If you haven’t figured it out, the FCL Yankees are good offensively.

RHP Carlos Lagrange1.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
He only has 6.2 innings during his rehab and the FCL season ends next week. If they don’t move him to Tampa, he will need to get some innings this fall/winter.
RHP Hansel Rosario (W, 2-0): 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, HR

DSL Yankees (11-22)

DSL Bombers (20-14)

Yankees MILB 6/4: Jackson Fristoe: 6 Scoreless Innings

News:

OF Brandon Lockridge was placed on the injured list for Scranton. Lockridge’s 21 stolen bases are second in the International League (teammate Caleb Durbin, also on the injured list, is tied for 3rd with 20).

OF Jasson Dominguez‘s rehab has moved to Scranton. Additionally, the stint has been extended by ten days. With the approval of MLB, teams are allowed to extend rehab stints three times at 10 days per pop. This is applicable if a player is rehabbing an elbow or shoulder injury. As you may suspect, this is most often used with pitchers rehabbing from Tommy John.

IF Enmanuel Tejeda has begun a rehab stint in the FCL. The 19-year-old hit .330/.374/.402 in 108 plate appearances for Tampa before his injury on May 2nd. Tejeda compiled back-to-back 4-hit games when the injury hit.

Scranton (34-24) (Lost to Toledo, 4-2)

CF Jasson Dominguez0-for-3
Sometimes, it is hard to remember that Dominguez has played only ten Triple-A games.
   CF Greg Allen0-for-1
SS Oswald Peraza0-for-4, K
Peraza is hitting .137 (7-for-51) for Scranton (1-for-27 slide). You figure that the bat will start clicking, but this is an ugly stretch.
2B Jorbit Vivas1-for-4, K
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-3, RS, BB
Narvaez has an 8-game hitting streak (10-for-28; 5 walks)
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-4, 2B (9)

1.80 ERA (20 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 HR, 10 BB, 22 K)
RHP Phil Bickford1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.38 ERA (21.1 IP, 19 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 9 BB, 28 K). Both Underwood and Bickford are somewhere on the depth chart. You hope you don’t need to use them, but nowadays, a bullpen is “all hands on deck.”

Somerset (25-27) (Lost to Hartford, 5-4)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-5, 2 K
Jones increases his on-base streak to 17.
1B Agustin Ramirez0-for-5, K
.263/.364/.537.
C Ben Rice2-for-4, 2B (9), RS, BB
Rice is hitting .261/.382/.511 and is 5-for-11 to start June with three doubles and two walks.
SS Ben Cowles1-for-4, 2B (18), K
Cowles hit 18 doubles in 2022 and 2023 (many more games!)
DH J.C. Escarra: 2-for-4, 2B (10), RS, SB (1), K
3B Jordan Groshans1-for-4, K
RF Grant Richardson1-for-3, 2 RBI, BB, K
LF Jared Wegner1-for-3, CS (3), BB, K
2B Anthony Seigler1-for-3, HR (4), RBI, RS, SB (8), BB, 2 K
Seigler has homered four times in his last four games.

RHP Gerrit Cole3.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Cole’s durability is known – this was his first minor league game since July 10, 2016. Supposedly, everything looked fine. Now we wait to see how he feels tomorrow.
RHP Zach Messinger: (L, 2-3)  4.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
3.58 ERA (60.1 IP, 49 H, 35 R, 24 ER, 5 HR, 19 BB, 69 K).
RHP Jesus Liranzo1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

Hudson Valley (25-24) (Crushed Wilmington, 10-2)

2B Roc Riggio: 1-for-4, HBP
SS Jared Serna1-for-5, HR (11), RBI, 2 RS
Serna hit zero HR in his first 28 High-A games and two in his first 47 games. He has 9 in his last 28 games.
CF Jace Avina1-for-5, RS, 3 K
Avina owns an 8-game hitting streak (11-for-31).
C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-3, 3B (2), RBI, 3 RS, 2 BB
Rodriguez has three multi-walk games in his last five games. He drew 16 walks in May after drawing 6 in April. He is hitting .324/.412/.500 in 204 PA (12 doubles, 2 triples, 5 HR, 24 RBI, 33 R, 6-for-9 SB, 12.7% BB, 13.7% K). He just doesn’t stop producing.
DH Tyler Hardman2-for-5, 2B (2), HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 RS
As his stroke comes back, he should dominate this level.
1B Rafael Flores2-for-4, HR (3), 4 RBI, RS, BB, K
Flores has four 2-hit games in his last five games played. He tied his career-best for RBI in a game and is hitting .308 with a .894 OPS (14 doubles, 3 HR, 25 RBI).
LF Garrett Martin1-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS
Martin has homered twice in his last four games.
3B Josh Moylan1-for-4
Moylan is the proud owner of a 7-game hitting streak.
RF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, BB, K

RHP Jackson Fristoe: (W, 1-2)  6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Fristoe’s longest career outing (previous: 4.1 innings). He owns a 3.72 ERA (29 IP, 20 H, 13 R, 12 ER, 1 HR, 21 BB, 31 K). It doesn’t take a baseball savant to recognize where his biggest issue lies. It is encouraging to see that he issued none of those tonight.
RHP Trent Sellers: (S, 1) 3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
Sellers’ first career save.

Tampa (19-33) (Lost to Fort Myers, 4-2)

SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-4, SB (14), K
14-for-15 stealing bases. Lombard turned 19 on June 2nd. As stated before, the power has yet to show itself but that isn’t concerning.
2B Roderick Arias0-for-4, 2 K
.203/.311/.313 in 225 PA. I would advise waiting to see what he does in the second half of the season. Can he adjust or will the struggles continue?
1B Dylan Jasso1-for-4
LF Christopher Familia2-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS, K
His rehab was moved here from the FCL. Your reminder that he hit 16 home runs in 57 games at this level between 2022-2023.
3B Max Burt0-for-2, K
Burt, a 27-year-old utility player, is here on a rehab stint. In 2022 and 2023, he reached double digits in homers and stolen bases.
  3B Brenny Escanio0-for-2, K
CF Jackson Castillo2-for-4, HR (4), RBI, RS, K
.259/.386/.457 in 145 PA. His triple slash went as low as .156/.283/.267 (May 5th) but he has taken off since then.
DH Hans Montero0-for-4, 2 K

3.13 ERA (23 IP, 18 H, 12 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 15 BB, 27 K)

FCL (12-10) (They are tied with the Blue Jays, 8-8, in the 7th. I am not going to wait this one out – heck, it may even be over already, knowing how slow GameCast sometimes is at this level!)

CF Brando Mayea2-for-3, 2 RS, 2 SB (7), BB
Mayea’s power hasn’t shown itself but he is hitting .341 with a .828 OPS and is 7-for-7 stealing bases.

DSL Yankees (1-1) and DSL Bombers (0-1)

The Bombers lost, 12-3, today.  17-year-old Francisco Vilorio had a pair of hits and RBI.

The Yankees won, 19-7. They had 8 hits and 20 (TWENTY) walks. This league isn’t real.
They scored 11 runs in the first inning, highlighted by a Luis Puello grand slam. The 18-year-old catcher drove home 6, doubling his previous best. SS Dexters Peralta (16 years old) went 2-for-3 with 4 runs scored and a pair of walks, RBI, and stolen bases. The Yankees have another Montero in the organization as Estivenzon Montero joins Willy, Hans, and Fidel (there could be more, for all I know). He is a 17-year-old outfielder who debuted today (1-for-4, RBI, SB).

The DSL doesn’t do much for me. I’ll highlight what I can, but getting a read on these players is impossible. A $10,000 kid could emerge while a $800,000 kid dies on the vine (then, the prospect community acts as if they knew the $10,000 kid was a sleeper all along)

News:

Nothing

Scranton (32-19) (Lost to Toledo, 10-0)

2B Jorbit Vivas1-for-3, 3B (1), BB, K
Vivas’ rehab assignment is over and he was (predictably) assigned to Scranton.
SS Oswald Peraza0-for-3, BB, K
1B T.J. Rumfield: 0-for-4, K
Rumfield is in a minor 2-for-21 slump. More importantly, he has an extra-base hit slump that has reached 16 games.
C Carlos Narvaez: 1-for-2, 2 BB
Narvaez owns a 17.1% BB rate. A backup catcher who flashes an offensive tool or two is valuable in MLB (Narvaez also has some pop in his bat).
DH Jose Rojas0-for-4, K
RF Oscar Gonzalez0-for-4, K
LF Taylor Trammell2-for-4, 2B (4), K
Trammell is 11-for-47 (.234) since joining Scranton.

CF Greg Allen0-for-3, SAC, 2 K

LHP Edgar Barclay: (L, 3-3): 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
A much-needed solid evening for Barclay, who has struggled recently.
LHP Clayton Andrews1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Art Warren0.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 3 HR
RHP Yerry De Los Santos: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (22-24) (Lost to Bowie, 10-2)

1B Ben Rice1-for-4, HR (12), RBI, RS
Last 7 games: 7-for-24 (1 double, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 7 R, 5 BB, 4 K). On the season, he is hitting .242/.368/.503 in 191 PA (14.7% BB, 21.5% K). The Yankees continue to give him a lot of time behind the plate (great for value!), but he should be considered a candidate for the 2024 first base job if Anthony Rizzo is not retained.
DH Jasson Dominguez1-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS, 2 K
Dominguez has homered in two of his last three games. Last 4 games: 7-for-18. The bat has predictably heated up.
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-4
Ramirez had a big head start in the Eastern League (and organizational) home run race, but Rice has caught him. Anyway, he is hitting .275/.383/.569 in 183 PA, so I won’t worry about a random 11-game homerless streak.
CF Spencer Jones0-for-3, BB, 2 K
It may be surprising to hear Jones is on an 11-game on-base streak. It hasn’t been the prettiest of streaks (6-for-41, 8 walks, 21 K), so take it for what it is worth.
SS Ben Cowles1-for-3, 2B (16), BB, K
.320/.408/.529 in 184 PA (16 doubles, 2 triples, 4 HR, 29 RBI, 29 R, 7-for-7 SB)
3B J.C. Escarra0-for-4
LF Grant Richardson2-for-4
.295/.360/.484 in 136 PA. Back-to-back multi-hit efforts and seven 2-hit games in his last 13 games played (0 hits in the other 6 games).
RF Elijah Dunham0-for-3, BB
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-3, BB

LHP Brock Selvidge: (L, 4-3) 3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Selvidge cruised through 3 innings but ran into a string of tough luck in the 4th that knocked him out of the game. Season: 3.40 ERA (47.2 IP, 36 H, 24 R, 18 ER, 3 HR, 23 BB, 49 K). After reducing his walk rate considerably in 2023, it has spiked thus far in 2024.
RHP Ryan Anderson: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Yorlin Calderon1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K

RHP Ocean Gabonia0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

FCL (11-7) (Defeated the Blue Jays, 10-4, in a 9-inning game)

CF Brando Mayea2-for-4, 3B (1), 2 RS, SB (3), 2 BB, K
.346/.433/.423 in 30 PA. He has a 6-game hitting streak.
LF Christopher Familia1-for-2, 2B (1), RS, BB, K
For Familia, the FCL must feel like Little League to a high schooler.
  LF Brian Sanchez: 1-for-2, 3B (2), 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
7-game hitting streak. Imagine a world where the Yankees received two interesting prospects for Jake Bauers. By the way, Bauers is hitting .217/.308/.426 for the Brewers entering Tuesday’s action.
DH Edgleen Perez2-for-4, 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
6-game hitting streak and .350/.536/.500 in 56 PA overall.
C Josue Gonzalez0-for-5, 3 K
While his teammates are heating up, Gonzalez has cooled off. That’s how it goes.  He is hitting .204/.418/.510 in 67 PA.
2B Abrahan Ramirez2-for-3, RBI, RS, 2 BB, K
.318/.455/.477 in 56 PA. He plays mostly 2B/3B though he did get time in LF in 2023.
3B Luis Ogando1-for-4, HR (2; grand slam), 4 RBI, 2 RS, SB (3), 2 K
.226/.306/.452 in 36 PA.

Yankees MILB 8/21: Promotions!

News:

The Yankees have promoted top prospect Jasson Dominguez from Somerset to Scranton for the final month of the season. Remember that the Yankees did the same with Anthony Volpe last season and he took over the shortstop role for the big club in 2023. Can Dominguez make a similar jump? I wouldn’t rule it out. With Harrison Bader a free agent and left field still in shambles (more on that in a second), there can be a path for Dominguez.

Dominguez, who was hitting .198/.341/.343 after games of July 6th, has certainly turned it on since. He is hitting .350/.415/.535 (159 wRC+) in 36 games (176 plate appearances) since that date with a 10.2% BB and 19.9% K. He was first in the Eastern League in runs (83), fourth in RBI (66), third in stolen bases (37), and sixth in BB% (15.2%). The International League is known for its offense, but there could still be an adjustment period for Dominguez. He will be the second 20-year-old to make his debut in the International League this season, joining Tampa prospect Carson Williams. Williams joined the league on August 15th.

Speaking of the left field position, there is another candidate who is going to try to take the job. The Yankees have called up OF Everson Pereira from Triple-A Scranton. The 22-year-old has split time between Somerset and Scranton this season, hitting .300/.373/.548 in 343 plate appearances. Pereira’s BB% is OK (9.3%), but it is the K% we will need to watch. He has a 28.6% rate in 2023 and it has been an issue his entire minor league career. He is aggressive with a lot of power to tap into. I wouldn’t expect that to translate into a .300 hitter in MLB, but he has the bat speed and power to hit 25+ homers. Don’t be surprised if MLB pitchers feed him a steady stream of curves and sliders to see if they can take advantage of his aggressiveness.

Both of these moves make sense. Pereira deserves a chance to get accustomed to MLB pitching, and Dominguez has demonstrated that Double-A pitching is no longer giving him enough of a challenge.

In addition, the Yankees are bringing back IF Oswald Peraza. Everyone who is reading this knows his story so I don’t need to discuss it too much. I thought he was ready in 2022, and he did nothing to disprove that last September. He hasn’t performed at a high level in MLB in 2023, but it is time for him to get a consistent look.

As for others who may appear in 2023, it is hard to say. This is a year where the Yankees probably wish that rosters could expand to more than 28. C Austin Wells will be a talked-about name but I don’t think it is criminal if he sticks in Triple-A. They would need to find a 40-man slot for him, but they need to do that this winter anyway.

Scranton (57-60; 23-20 in the second half)

Day off. The Railriders have a hill to climb if they wish to make the playoffs. They are only four games behind Lehigh Valley for the second-half title, but there are four other teams ahead of them.

Somerset (67-46; 25-20 in the second half)

Day off. Somerset is already in the playoffs, courtesy of their first-half title. That said, the Patriots are in first place in the second half as well. If they pull off the Daily Double, the playoff berth will go to whoever comes in second place in the second half.

Hudson Valley (63-51; 24-24 in the second half)

Day off. Hudson Valley is already in the playoffs, courtesy of their first-half title.

Tampa (55-59; 24-24 in the second half)

Day off. Tampa isn’t going to make the playoffs in 2023, as they are seven games out of first place in the second half.

FCL Yankees (35-21) (Defeated the Blue Jays, 11-9)

2B Keiner Delgado3-for-5, HR (8), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K, 2 SB (36), CS (7)
The FCL ends this week, so we’ll see if they send Delgado to Tampa after that. He is hitting .294/.415/.490 in 234 PA with 35 walks, 30 strikeouts, and a 36-for-43 stolen base rate. He has 14 stolen bases in August.
SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-4, RS, BB, 2 SB (2)
Lombard is 4-for-8 with a pair of stolen bases and four walks. I tend to doubt they will send him to Tampa after this week.
RF Willy Montero1-for-3, SF, RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
1B Dylan Jasso2-for-5, 3B (1), HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 RS
.357/.478/.571 in 69 plate appearances for the 20-year-old. The undrafted free agent is another candidate for Tampa.
LF John Cruz4-for-5, 2B (6), RBI
Cruz is on the list of prospects that had little hype entering the season and put himself squarely on the prospect map. He is hitting .297/.381/.541 in 197 PA with ten home runs and 47 runs batted in. He will be 18 on August 29th and could debut in Tampa at that age in 2024.
DH Enmanuel Tejeda0-for-4, BB, 2 K
3B Hans Montero0-for-2, 2 RS, 3 BB, CS (1)
Montero is a bonus baby who is being asked to hit 8th. That is how insanely deep this roster is. He is hitting .264/.428/.416 in 229 plate appearances.

RHP Chalniel Arias3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
Since his promotion: 8.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 8 BB, 7 K

3.29 ERA (52 IP, 41 H, 21 R, 19 ER, 6 HR, 16 BB, 50 K). A solid year for the 18-year-old.
RHP Keninson Diaz (W, 5-0): 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

DSL Bombers (27-26) (Squeaked past the Twins, 8-7)

2B Gabriel Terrero1-for-3, 2B (9), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K, CS (6)
.299/.407/.533 in 162 PA (9 doubles, 1 triple, 7 HR, 27 RBI, 33 R, 22 BB, 35 K, 14-for-20 SB)
C Edgleen Perez2-for-4, 2B (8), RS, K, 2 SB (5)
3B Kevin Verde2-for-4, 2B (9), HR (4), 4 RBI, 2 RS, K
.258/.316/.433 in 133 PA for the 17-year-old. This is Verde’s debut season and he is certainly holding his own.
RF Ramiro Altagracia2-for-4, RS, K

RHP Sunayro Martina3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
3.86 ERA (28 IP, 19 H, 21 R, 12 ER, 1 HR, 23 BB, 34 K). This is a fairly typical DSL line.

Yankees MILB 8/19: Everson Pereira Homers Twice

News:

Nada.

Scranton (56-60; 22-20 in the second half) (Lost a crazy one to Worcester, 14-12)

SS Oswald Peraza: 3-for-5, 3B (2), HR (14), 2 RBI, 3 RS, HBP, K, SB (15)
This qualifies as a rather productive night. Peraza is hitting .262/.350/.477 in 294 PA (9 doubles, 2 triples, 14 HR, 36 RBI, 45 R, 28 BB (9.5%), 54 K (18.4%), 15-for-19 SB). Peraza has 754 career plate appearances in Triple-A. That is criminal if you truly believe in a prospect – and, if you don’t, it is criminal that you didn’t take advantage of his value.
C Austin Wells: 2-for-6, 2B (9), HR (2), 3 RBI, RS, 4 K
I would rather not see the four strikeouts, but the power is nice. He is hitting .250/.340/.413 in 106 PA at this level and .237/.329/.430 in 389 PA overall (23 doubles, 14 HR, 63 RBI, 39 R, 43 BB (11.1%), 91 K (23.4%), 7-for-7 SB).
LF Everson Pereira: 2-for-4, 2 HR (8), 2 RBI, 3 RS, BB, K
Pereira’s second 2-HR game in 2023. Overall, between here and Somerset, he is hitting .302/.370/.551 in 338 PA (17 doubles, 2 triples, 18 HR, 64 RBI, 50 R, 30 BB (8.9%), 97 K (28.7%), 10-for-12 SB). For Scranton, he is hitting .316/.379/.559 with eight homers and 33 RBI. I will tell anyone who listens that there are good things in his profile and not-so-ideal things in his profile. It doesn’t matter – let him get some well-deserved reps against big-league pitching. Nobody is asking him to be a savior at this point.
1B Andres Chaparro1-for-4, HR (23), RBI, RS, BB
Chaparro has homered in three straight games and is three behind the injured Tyler Hardman for the organization’s home run lead.
RF Franchy Cordero1-for-4, RS, BB
DH Carlos Narvaez: 0-for-4, RBI, BB, 2 K, SB (4)
Between here and Somerset: .247/.382/.417 in 304 plate appearances. The question the Yankees need to ask is whether he is a viable MLB backup. If another team thinks so, he will be plucked in the Rule 5 if not protected.
2B Jamie Westbrook: 1-for-2, RS, 3 BB, SB (4)
3B Jake Lamb1-for-5, 2 RBI, 3 K
CF Michael Hermosillo0-for-5, K

LHP Edgar Barclay: (L, 0-2) 3 IP, 4 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 2 HR
Since promotion: 8.04 ERA (15.2 IP, 18 H, 15 R, 14 ER, 5 HR, 12 BB, 15 K)
RHP Michael Gomez 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
RHP Ron Marinaccio: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 K
RHP Matt Bowman1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Wilmer Difo0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Difo is the go-to guy when they are out of pitchers.

Somerset (66-46; 24-19 in the second half) (Lost to Reading, 8-7)

CF Jasson Dominguez0-for-5, K
His games have been so exciting (for the most part) lately that a random, uneventful 0-for-5 feels out of place.
C Ben Rice1-for-4, K
1B Agustin Ramirez0-for-4, K
RF Elijah Dunham1-for-4, HR (8), RBI, RS, K
DH Josh Breaux1-for-3, HR (7), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
It comes to the surprise of nobody has Breaux has seven homers in 20 games here. He has 26 homers in 99 games at this level from 2021-2023.
SS Jesus Bastidas: 2-for-3, 2B (2), 2 RS, BB, K
LF Aaron Palensky: 2-for-4, 3B (1), HR (8), 4 RBI, 2 RS, K
Palensky launches his 20th HR combined between here and Hudson Valley. He is 10-for-34 (.294) in August and has homered in three of his last four games, driving in ten runs.
2B Max Burt0-for-3, BB, K
3B Eduardo Torrealba0-for-3, BB, 2 K

RHP Matt Sauer3 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, HR
It just wasn’t his night. Sauer now owns a 4.19 ERA in 38.2 IP (33 H, 20 R, 18 ER, 6 HR, 17 BB, 49 K)
RHP Tanner Myatt1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K

Since promotion: 7.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 9 K

Hudson Valley (62-51; 23-24 in the second half) (Lost to Brooklyn, 8-7)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, 2B (28), RS, BB, K, SB (34)
Last 10 games: 12-for-41 (.293; 4 doubles, 4 RBI, 8 R, 5 BB, 12 K, 8-for-8 SB). He leads the South Atlantic League in doubles and is fifth in stolen bases.
RF Anthony Hall1-for-5, HR (1), RBI, RS
Hall’s first HR since his promotion and 10th overall between here and Tampa. Since promotion: 9-for-41 with five doubles and a homer.
2B Jared Serna1-for-3, 2B (3), RBI, RS, BB, HBP, 2 K, SB (5)
At this level: .267/.353/.333 in 51 PA (3 doubles, 3 RBI, 6 R, 4 BB, 7 K, 5-for-5 SB), Overall, Serna is hitting .281/.350/.467 in 494 PA (24 doubles, 1 triple, 19 HR, 74 RBI, 78 R, 44 BB, 82 K, 24-for-30 SB).Serna is answering every challenge thrown at him – I am not concerned by his lack of pop in his small High-A sample size.
C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4, BB, 2 K
DH Antonio Gomez0-for-5, 2 K
SS Ben Cowles1-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, K
.263/.361/.416 in 379 PA. Cowles is 16-for-45 with 13 walks in August.
LF Christopher Familia1-for-3, HR (9), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Familia is up to 20 HR, 54 RBI, and 51 runs scored in 54 games between here and Tampa.
1B Rafael Flores2-for-4, HR (5), 2 RBI, RS
.269/.351/.367 in 370 PA (15 doubles, 1 triple, 5 HR, 34 RBI, 43 R, 41 BB, 92 K, 3-for-4 SB). He needed this game as he is only 9-for-55 (.164) in August
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-4, 3 K

RHP Zach Messinger4 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, HR

Tampa (55-58; 24-23 in the second half) (Lost to Daytona, 11-5)

DH Roc Riggio: 1-for-3, RBI, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
Riggio is hitting .200 (6-for-30) at this level with 14 walks (31.1%) and 13 strikeouts (28.9%) in 45 PA. I love small sample madness.
3B Kiko Romero0-for-4, RBI, BB, 3 K
C Omar Martinez0-for-4, SF, RBI, K
1B Josh Moylan2-for-5, RS
Moylan is holding his own in 54 plate appearances (.256/.715 OPS; 1 HR, 7 RBI, 9 R, 10 BB, 14 K). As stated previously, he was a highly sought-after non-drafted free agent.
SS Brenny Escanio: 2-for-4, 3B (4), BB
Escanio has a 9-game hitting streak (14-for-36). This is his first extra-base hit during the streak.
CF Cole Gabrielson1-for-3, 2B (2), RBI, BB, 2 K
Gabrielson is 6-for-29 (.207) at this level with two doubles and a triple.
RF Tayler Aguilar0-for-3, RS, BB, K

2B Jose Colmenares0-for-3, RS, HBP

RHP Ryan Harvey: (L, 1-1)  4 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, HR
At this level: 20 IP, 15 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 3 HR, 12 BB, 15 K. Harvey was their 11th-round pick in the 2022 draft out of UC Santa Barbara.
RHP Adam Stone0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Nolberto Henriquez3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Luis Arejula1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

FCL Yankees (32-21) (Shut down the Blue Jays, 5-0, to clinch the division. They will be one of four teams in what is a quick playoff format. The first round is only one game. The championship round is the best of 3. It starts on Thursday)

SS Keiner Delgado1-for-3, BB, 3 SB (34)
Delgado steals three bases for the second day in a row. He is hitting .286/.408/.471 in 228 PA with a 34-for-40 stolen base rate.

RF John Cruz0-for-2, RBI, 2 BB, SB (9)
2B Enmanuel Tejeda0-for-3, BB
3B Hans Montero1-for-2, RBI, RS, 2 BB, K, SB (16)
.267/.424/.420 in 224 PA (6 doubles, 3 triples, 5 HR, 23 RBI, 39 R, 41 BB, 46 K, 16-for-16 SB). This is a legitimate bonus baby prospect who is hitting 8th in this lineup.
C Edinson Duran0-for-4, K

RHP Carlos Lagrange2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K
When I look at rookie league stat lines, I pay a lot more attention to recording all seven outs via strikeout than anything else. The big (6’7″) 20-year-old owns a 4.97 ERA in 41.2 IP (34 H, 25 R, 23 ER, 4 HR, 24 BB, 63 K)
LHP Edwar Polimir (W, 4-0): 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K

9 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 14 K.
LHP Pablo Mujica (S, 1): 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K

DSL Yankees (32-18) (Lost to DSL Orioles Black, 10-3. They are in a tie for first with DSL Colorado, though they have a better winning percentage. That is important because they don’t force games to be made up. This league plays an eight-team playoff – the six division winners + 2 wild cards)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-3, HR (3), RBI, RS, BB
Mayea with a leadoff home run.

SS Kevin Verde2-for-3, SF, 2 RBI, RS, 2 BB. 3 SB (8), CS (3)
.250/.310/.397 in 129 PA for the 17-year-old in his debut season.

RHP Stanly Alcantara (W, 3-1): 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Yankees MILB 8/5: Jasson Dominguez: 3 Hits (2 Doubles)

News:

The Yankees have signed RHP Zach McAllister to a minor league contract. If that name sounds familiar, he was the Yankees’ third-round pick in the 2006 draft. Yes, he was drafted three years before the Yankees’ latest title.

Eventually traded to Cleveland for OF Austin Kearns in 2010, McAllister has enjoyed a 480-game MLB career, posting a 4.09 ERA (100 ERA+) over 591.2 innings. He hasn’t pitched in MLB since 2018 with the Tigers.

He has bounced around baseball since then. His latest stint was earlier this season, when he pitched to a 4.93 ERA in 38.1 innings for the Diamondbacks Triple-A squad in Reno.

For the Yankees, he is here for depth purposes. They just lost veteran Tanner Tully, so McAllister may just take his slot.

Scranton (49-55; 15-15 in the second half) (Lost to Rochester, 6-4)

SS Oswald Peraza1-for-5, 2B (8)
Peraza has hit safely in all five August games (7-for-21, 2 doubles)

RHP Michael Gomez0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Spencer Howard: (L, 0-1) 1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
His organizational debut isn’t a memorable one…at least not in a good way. Howard once had enough prospect credibility to be ranked as one of the top pitching prospects in the game. Baseball is a tough sport.
RHP Zac Houston: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Between here and Somerset: 4.01 ERA in 24.2 IP (16 H, 13 R, 11 ER, 3 HR, 15 BB, 44 K)

DH Jeisson Rosario0-for-1, 3 BB, K

Burt (single, SB) and Torrealba (BB) set up Dominguez’s heroics.

RHP Matt Sauer4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K
A solid line for Sauer, though it did take him 85 pitches to record those 14 outs.
RHP Tanner Myatt: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Alex Mauricio: (W, 2-2)  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Hudson Valley (56-43; 17-15 in the second half) (Lost to Wilmington, 2-1, in ten innings)

CF Spencer Jones2-for-5, K

LF Aldenis Sanchez0-for-4, 2 K
2B Luis Santos0-for-3, BB, 2 K
3B Marcos Cabrera1-for-3, RS, BB, K

RHP Leonardo Pestana3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
In his last appearance down in Tampa, Pestana allowed six runs in 0.2 innings. In his High-A debut tonight, he throws very well.
LHP Joel Valdez2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Mason Vinyard: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Jack Neely: (L, 5-3)  2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Tampa (48-52; 17-17 in the second half) (Defeated Bradenton, 4-2)

3B Kiko Romero1-for-2, RS, 2 BB
3-for-10 with three walks at this level.
LF Jared Wegner: 2-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI
Wegner is already 24 years old so the FCL (where he went 4-for-9 with two doubles and two home runs)/Low-A shouldn’t present much of a challenge to him.

DH Josh Tiedemann: 0-for-4, BB
The Yankees selected the 2-way player in the 13th round out of High School. It is so odd to see a player listed as a “TWP”

Yankees MILB 6/30: Brando Mayea Hits First Home Run

News:

The Yankees have purchased RHP Jesus Liranzo from Lancaster (Independent). He was assigned to Somerset.

The 28-year-old started his professional journey in 2012. He owns a career minor league record of 11-18 with a 4.38 ERA in 212 games (15 starts). Liranzo has bounced all around the minors, having played for the Braves, Orioles, Pirates, Diamondbacks, Tigers, and Nationals. Fangraphs placed him on the “others to watch” in their minor league report on the Diamondbacks last year. He was given praise for his high-octane fastball and spin rates. I can see why the Yankees were interested.

Scranton (36-41; 2-1 in the second half) (Knocked off Syracuse, 10-6)

LF Estevan Florial0-for-2, 2 RS, 2 BB, 3 SB (16)
Florial ties his personal best for SB in a game. He is hitting .290/.384/.597 in 292 PA (10 doubles, 3 triples, 20 HR, 46 RBI, 50 R, 40 BB, 85 K, 16-for-24 SB)
CF Brandon Lockridge0-for-5, 2 K
C-1B Carlos Narvaez2-for-5, HR (5), 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
The 24-year-old also hit a pair of home runs down in Somerset earlier this season. Narvaez has 25 walks (19.2%) and 26 strikeouts (20%) since his promotion and is looking more and more like a legitimate MLB backup option. Last season was the only season when his batting average tanked, but he did contribute a personal-best 11 home runs. If you remember, he hit a walk-off home run during spring training.
DH Andres Chaparro1-for-3, RS, 2 BB
Chaparro has drawn seven walks in his last six games.
1B Rodolfo Duran1-for-4
  PH-C Ben Rortvedt1-for-1, 2B (4), RBI, RS
Rortvedt’s pinch-hit RBI double in the top of the 9th broke the 6-6 tie.
3B Jamie Westbrook: 3-for-4, HR (11), 2 RBI, 3 RS, BB
RF Michael Hermosillo1-for-4, HR (10), SF, 2 RBI, RS, K
SS Jesus Bastidas: 3-for-5, 3B (2), 2 RBI
.265/.321/.422 in 246 PA. This is his 4th 3-hit game this season.
2B Max Burt0-for-3, 2 BB, K

RHP Clayton Beeter5.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 K, HR
Beeter’s first two Triple-A starts: 11 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 3 HR, 7 BB, 7 K. Lucky 7’s!
RHP Michael Gomez1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Greg Weissert: (W, 2-2)  1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
LHP Josh Maciejewski1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Used primarily as a starter in 2019 and 2021, Maciejewski took on more of a bullpen role in 2022 (he hasn’t made any starts in 2023).

Somerset (44-27; 2-1 in the second half) (Lost to Bowie, 7-6)

SS Trey Sweeney0-for-5
Sweeney ends June 29-for-108 (.269) with seven doubles and eight home runs. The power display was impressive and hopefully continues into July.
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
Dominguez goes 18-for-97 (.186) with three doubles, three home runs, 19 walks, and 37 strikeouts. Judge for yourself.
DH T.J. Rumfield0-for-4, 3 K
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-2, RBI, 2 BB, K
Hardman had an impressive June (especially in the power department), going 21-for-80 (.263) with eight home runs and 16 runs batted in.
CF Jeisson Rosario1-for-4, 2 RBI, 3 K
C Mickey Gasper: 2-for-4, HR (4), RBI, RS, 2 K

2.77 ERA (39 IP, 22 H, 16 R, 12 ER, 1 HR, 27 BB, 43 K). Santos isn’t easy to hit – but control has always been an issue.
RHP Jesus Liranzo1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
Liranzo’s organizational debut.
RHP Tanner Myatt2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

Hudson Valley (39-33; 0-3 in the second half) (Lost to Wilmington, 4-3)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, RS, BB, K
Jones had an up-and-down month. He finishes it 23-for-94 (.245; 4 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR; 13 BB, 30 K)
2B Ben Cowles0-for-5, 3 K
DH Agustin Ramirez: 2-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS
Ramirez is an intriguing catching prospect. He has eight home runs in 58 games between here and Tampa to go along with 43 walks (17.9%) and 41 strikeouts (17.1%).
1B Rafael Flores: 1-for-3, RS, BB
RF Christopher Familia1-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, 2 K
Given how Familia’s season is going, it comes as no surprise that his first High-A hit is a 2-run double. Between here and Tampa, he has 8 doubles, 2 triples, 11 HR, and 33 RBI in 23 games.
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-3, BB, 2 K, CS (5)
C Antonio Gomez1-for-3, BB, 2 K
Gomez ends June on a 6-game hitting streak.  He didn’t want to see the month end as he went 21-for-61 (.344) with five doubles. He started the month at .205/.272/.280 and ended it at .249/.319/.358.
LF Anthony Garcia2-for-4, K, SB (2)
.199/.295/.316 in 156 PA. Typically known for his ability to take walks and hit home runs, he has only three HR this season.
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-2, BB, HBP, K

LHP Joel Valdez4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
5.65 ERA (51 IP, 42 H, 34 R, 32 ER, 7 HR, 37 BB, 52 K). The walks and the homers certainly present a problem at the moment.
RHP Harrison Cohen2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
3.09 ERA between here and Tampa (20.1 IP, 19 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 7 BB, 26 K)
RHP Nick Paciorek: (L, 4-1)  0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Luis Velasquez0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Mason Vinyard1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Luis Santos0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
This is indeed the same Luis Santos who normally operates as a utility infielder.

Tampa (34-38; 1-2 in the second half) (Score four in the bottom of the 9th to defeat Daytona Beach, 4-3)

SS Jared Serna1-for-5, K
.289/.351/.491 in 305 PA. He ran into a bit of a wall at the end of June, finishing 30-for-114 (.263). However, he did hit seven doubles and five home runs while driving home 21 runs from the leadoff position.
2B Brenny Escanio1-for-3, 2 BB, 2 K
Escanio, who is only 20, finishes June with a .294/.370/.424 line that featured both of his home runs this season. I won’t try to convince you that he is a top prospect – just showing you that a 20-year-old may be adjusting to a level.
C Jesus Rodriguez2-for-5, 2 RBI, K
His 2-run single with two outs in the bottom of the 9th finished off the comeback. Rodriguez is now hitting .294/.377/.423 in 224 PA with 25 walks (11.2%) and 32 strikeouts (14.3%). He finishes June 31-for-85 (.365). As stated a few days ago, he should get some more catching opportunities (in addition to his work elsewhere on the diamond) with Agustin Ramirez‘s promotion.
CF Anthony Hall0-for-3, HBP, K
.275/.389/.466 in 226 PA. A mundane ending to a solid month, where he hit .284/.373/.545 with six home runs. In May, he hit .338/.477/.471 with one home run. After a slow April (which came on the heels of receiving one AB before being injured in 2022), he has essentially destroyed this level.
DH Omar Martinez0-for-3, RS, BB, K
LF Daury Arias: 2-for-3, RS, BB, K, SB (7)
RF Tayler Aguilar0-for-2, 2 BB, K
1B Jake Palmer0-for-3, RBI, RS, BB
3B Beau Brewer1-for-4, RBI, RS, K

RHP Hayden Merda: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
The 9th-inning rally saves Merda from what would have been an undeserved loss. He owns a 5.07 ERA in 60.1 IP (56 H, 38 R, 34 ER, 4 HR, 27 BB, 60 K). One thing those who follow Yankees’ prospects have learned is to pay attention to the middle-round pitchers they choose.
RHP Manny Ramirez2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Alex Bustamante (W, 2-0): 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

FCL Yankees (11-8) (Lost to the Tigers, 9-5)

DH Keiner Delgado0-for-4, BB
SS Roderick Arias1-for-4, RS, 2 K
Arias now has a 7-game hitting streak (11-for-33)
3B Hans Montero0-for-4
2B Enmanuel Tejeda: 1-for-1, 3B (1), RBI, 3 RS, 3 BB, 2 SB (13), CS (2)
Great day for Tejeda, but he did leave the game for reasons unknown. He is hitting .311/.506/.525 in 87 PA with a 23/18 BB/K
CF John Cruz1-for-2, 2B (2), RBI, BB, K, SB (4)
LF Dayro Perez0-for-4, RBI, 2 K, SB (5)
C Edinson Duran: 1-for-4, RBI

RHP Cam Schlittler 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
RHP Zach Greene: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
He should be back in Scranton soon.

C Edgleen Perez1-for-3, 2B (2), 2 RBI, 3 RS, 4 BB
Perez is 9-for-46 but owns a .412 OBP thanks to 17 walks. That’s the DSL, baby!
CF Ramiro Altagracia3-for-6, 2B (4), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K

News:

C Ben Rortvedt‘s stint on the IL didn’t last long as he was in the Scranton lineup tonight. The Railriders are now carrying four catchers (Rortvedt, Rodolfo DuranCarlos Narvaez, and Josh Breaux). They can use the 1B and DH slots to help distribute some at-bats (Rortvedt, Narvaez, and Duran all played tonight), but they also need to make sure these players get in their time behind the plate as well.

SS Oswald Peraza missed his third straight game this evening. OF Everson Pereira (Somerset) is still out of the lineup, as well.

Since they had a need for additional bodies in Scranton, UTIL Max Burt was promoted to Scranton. Drafted in the 28th round in the 2018 draft out of Northeastern, Burt is an organizational utility player. This isn’t his first stint in Scranton (played 36 games back in 2021). When I see a player like Burt, I think of someone you are going to see coaching, scouting, or whatever they wish to do in baseball some day.

Scranton (33-39) (Lost to Buffalo, 2-1, in ten innings)

LF Estevan Florial1-for-4, HR (19), RBI, RS, K
.296/.385/.619. After hitting 9 HR in May, he has 7 in June.  That said, he hasn’t been on top of his game in June. He is only 18-for-74 (.243) with four walks and 22 strikeouts. He walked 15 times in May, so his discipline has taken a bit of a fall.
3B Andres Chaparro0-for-4

Somerset (40-25) (Defeated New Hampshire, 4-3, in 14 innings)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, HR (9), 2 RBI, RS, BB
Sweeney has four home runs in his last five games. This home run tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the 11th.
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-5, BB, K
His average has fallen back down to .198. I think everyone should have at least SOME level of concern, right? He hasn’t shown much progress as the season has gone along. It’s not like the Yankees are loaded with upper-level OF prospects, especially if Everson Pereira is going to go down to injury every year.
DH Austin Wells: 2-for-5, 2B (9), BB, K
Wells is surprisingly hitting only .247 at this level, but you still feel confident that he has conquered Double-A. Some of that is due to the power he has shown (9 doubles, 9 HR in 38 games).
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-6
Eeeeeeek.
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-5, RS, BB, K
Palensky scored the winning run on a balk in the 14th.
C Anthony Seigler0-for-3, 3 BB
All three walks were intentional. Whatever helps the OBP!
1B Eric Wagaman0-for-5, BB, K
CF Jeisson Rosario0-for-5, BB, 2 K
2B Delvin Perez1-for-5, HR (2), RBI, 2 RS, BB, 4 K
I brought up his Top 100 status yesterday. In case you are wondering, he never lived up to it because the bat simply never developed. He can run and play multiple positions (though he is mostly a SS) and that perhaps can get him some MLB time down the road.

RHP Richard Fitts6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K
3.91 ERA (71.1 IP, 68 H, 32 R, 31 ER, 10 HR, 15 BB, 80 K). Fitts has been rolling lately. This was his 13th start of 2023 – if you believe in patterns (and you should at least pay attention to them), he made 17 starts in Tampa in 2022 before being promoted to Hudson Valley for his final five starts.

SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, 2 K
.208/.265/.358 in 230 PA. In the FSL last season, he hit .203/.271/.311. He started the season very promising but has fallen down rather quickly. He is 7-for-62 in June with 23 strikeouts.
1B Rafael Flores1-for-4, 2B (10), K
DH Anthony Garcia0-for-4, 2 K
C Antonio Gomez: 2-for-4, HR (3), RBI, RS, K
Gomez is up to .247 as he improves his June numbers to 17-for-46 (.370) with four doubles and two home runs. A reason for optimism? I will take anything – he is still only 21 as a catcher in High-A ball.

LHP Clay Aguilar1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

3.65 ERA (61.2 IP, 57 H, 29 R, 25 ER, 3 HR, 15 BB, 74 K). Selvidge is only 20, so they don’t really need to rush him to Hudson Valley – but he has done a solid job. His ten strikeouts tonight set a new personal high (the previous high was 8, which he accomplished in each of his three starts prior to tonight)
