Yankees MILB 9/17: Spencer Jones Homers, Collects 3 Hits

News:

The Yankees recently released LHP Victor Gonzalez, who was toiling in Triple-A after mediocre results in MLB earlier this season. Seen as a potential Wandy Peralta replacement, Gonzalez was never able to get into a consistent groove. The trade with the Dodgers comes down to how the two prospects (Trey Sweeney (now with Detroit) and Jorbit Vivas) perform.

Scranton (85-59) (Defeated Buffalo, 10-5, in 12 innings. Worcester won, so the two teams remain tied with five games to play. If they finish tied, Scranton wins the tiebreaker)

Nobody denies that the strikeout rate has to come down (if they are, they are in denial). However, there is (obviously) a lot of talent to tap into. Will the Yankees be patient or cash in one of their biggest chips?

Dees pitched strongly down the stretch and it continued into tonight’s playoff start. He could factor into the Yankees’ 2025 plans at some point, though he is Rule 5 eligible. It is either protect him or trade him. I cannot imagine them leaving him exposed.

Watson also pitched well down the stretch (8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 9 K in his last seven appearances). Like Dees, he is Rule 5 eligible this winter.

I can’t guarantee that the Yankees will hold onto Reyzelman, but he has high-leverage reliever potential.

Yankees MILB 9/11: Caleb Durbin Homers

News:

RHP Tanner Myatt was released from his contract.

Since being drafted in the 11th round of the 2018 draft out of Florence-Darlington Technical College, injuries limited Myatt to 203.2 innings. He posted a 3.71 ERA and 246/153 K/BB (10.9 K/9; 6.8 BB/9). He allowed only 13 home runs and 5.2 hits/9.

Myatt had a massive upside at the time of his draft. Standing 6’7″, he reportedly hit 101 MPH with his fastball. The Yankees gave him a bonus slightly over the $125,000 cap (at the time) for a player in the 11th round or later ($147,500).

A pitcher with his raw talent is worth taking a shot with. It didn’t work out.

What else does this kid need to do and how can he not be discouraged? The Yankees are mismanaging him to an extreme and there is no excuse. Alex Verdugo has no future with the Yankees and may not be the best LF option on the current roster, never mind adding Dominguez to the mix. The Yankees organization has a lot of explaining to do. I don’t want to hear Brian Cashman call everyone else idiots while defending “the process.” No process exists that justifies this. No analytical data, no whatever data Aaron Judge wants to use. Nothing. Enough is enough with this clown show. By the way, I don’t see Dominguez as a “savior.” They have two of the best hitters in the galaxy for that role. It’s just ridiculous that he is down here. OK, I am done with my rant.

This was a tough night for the entire offense. However, this is a Jones pattern – even in the middle of a hot streak, a random 0-for-4 with four strikeouts enters the chat. What does that mean for his future? I don’t know. We have to accept that these games will happen in MLB. The question is: Can he surround that without enough offense to make these types of games tolerable?

His solo HR with two outs in the top of the 9th tied the game. Flores has 20 HR between Hudson Valley and Somerset and has three homers in his last four games. He didn’t show much power in his first 109 games (16 doubles, 1 triple, 10 HR) but now has 28 doubles and 20 HR in 113 games this season

Pacheco’s Double-A debut. In 11 games for Tampa (he didn’t pitch for Hudson Valley), he pitched to a 2.08 ERA in 17.1 IP with a 23/4 K/BB. He is the pitcher who didn’t pitch in an affiliated league between 2020 (no minor league season) and 2023. The Yankees signed the 25-year-old in June after he tossed 22.2 innings of 2.78 ERA ball in the Mexican League.

Yankees MILB 8/29: Spencer Jones Continues to Roll

2B Caleb Durbin: 0-for-0
Is his size a detriment? Maybe, but we shouldn’t downgrade him on that alone. At 5’6″, he is the same height as Jose Altuve (Hall of Fame aspirations) and Tony Kemp (not quite Hall of Fame material). We have successful 5’7″ and 5’8″ players. How much does that extra height matter?  The other question is defensive flexibility. The Yankees play him all over the field in the minors. Does a kid with his size have the arm to play anywhere other than 2B in MLB? His profile is intriguing and, while he isn’t a power hitter, his power is spiking this year. 
LF Jasson Dominguez: 0-for-0
Will Dominguez be up in September? He should be. However, the Yankees will need to find room. Will Trent Grisham (who has minor league options) be a causality? Even though Grisham has CF ability, I find that to be more realistic than cutting Alex Verdugo. Regardless, leaving Dominguez off the roster in September would be foolish.

.238/.316/.403 in 342 PA (14 doubles, 3 triples, 10 HR, 46 RBI, 48 R, 18-for-22 SB, 9.6% BB, 37.1% K).  Is he the CF version of Oneil Cruz? That isn’t a bad comparison on paper, but Cruz reached Double-A at 20 (to be fair, Jones was still in college!) and struck out 25.7% of the time. That remains the one thing I can’t get over. Striking out 37.1% of the time in Double-A is a massive red flag. So, I do think Cruz is a good comparison when you factor in size and athleticism. I don’t think Jones is progressing as well as Cruz did.

.293/.406/.389 in 189 PA. I can’t wait until Lockridge makes his debut – it might not be with the Yankees, but I think someone is going to give him a shot.

On a night when Gleyber Torres leaves the game, Vivas has another big effort. He is hitting .269/.409/.429 in 152 PA. As for his ability to play third base: The scouting reports aren’t favorable and the Dodgers scaled back his time last season. The Yankees have used him sparingly there, indicating that they think he can handle it to an extent. Perhaps a “break glass in case of emergency” type of deal. If you believe reports, if Vivas is going to make it, it will be as a second baseman.
2B Oswald Peraza: 0-for-4, K
Peraza, another option to call up, is hitting .201/.318/.236. I am a big Peraza fan. I wanted him to take over SS for the Yankees halfway through 2022. But I can’t justify him being called up. He has not earned that.

Ramirez has homered three times in his last seven games.

Maybe today is the start of the outburst we are waiting for. One of the home runs was a grand slam. This is Jones’ third career multi-HR game and second 4-hit effort. The 7 RBI are a personal best. Additionally, he has doubled in four straight games. In June, he went 32-for-108 (.296; 7 doubles, 1 triple, 6 HR, 29 RBI, 19 R, 5-for-6 SB, 10 BB, 44 K). Season: .252/.331/.419 in 293 PA (12 doubles, 2 triples, 9 HR, 45 RBI, 42 R, 17-for-21 SB, 10.2% BB, 35.5% K). I was waiting for the slugging percentage to get above .400. Next stop? .800 OPS.

.261/.355/.467 (129 wRC+) in 318 PA (20 doubles, 12 HR, 52 RBI, 48 R, 11.3% BB, 17.3% K). He hit .276/.324/.429 in June (4.8% BB, 15.2% K). Serna had a 0-for-20 slump during June, which may have been impacted by an HBP. A trip to Somerset will happen sometime in the second half.
CF Jace Avina: 0-for-0
.289/.369/.481 (136 wRC+) in 271 PA (21 doubles, 8 HR, 40 RBI, 33 R, 9.6% BB, 24.0% K). In Low-A for Milwaukee in 2023, Avina hit .233/.373/.442, which was good for a 134 wRC+. His walk rate is down but he is hitting for more average and power. Acquired as part of the deal for Jake Bauers, Avina is 21 years old.

.239/.379/.403 (125 wRC+) in 248 PA. Thus far, he isn’t hitting for as much power as he did in Low-A but the BB% is up and the K% is down.

It isn’t just that Dominguez is hitting – it is that he is hitting the ball hard, which indicates his arm is fine when it comes to swinging the bat. The throwing? It’s likely not quite there yet, but it shouldn’t be long. It is beyond encouraging that he is playing full games in the field.

Since joining Scranton: 10-for-22 (3 doubles, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 8 R, 6 BB, 6 K). He has four games at C and 2 at first base. I keep saying catching = more value while 1B = present/future MLB need. If the Yankees had “near future” plans for a promotion, would he not receive more first-base reps?

When do you know a prospect is having a great season? Answer: When you look at “1-for-4, RS” and feel disappointed.
SS Ben Cowles: 2-for-4
.315/.385/.505 in 231 PA (20 doubles, 3 triples, 4 HR, 31 RBI, 32 R, 9-for-9 SB, 9.6% BB, 17.3% K). Is this “real”? I like the reduction in the strikeout rate. It stands out if you reduce your K% as you move to a higher level.  Cowles is 24 years old. In 2014, at 23, Rob Refsnyder hit .318/.387/.497 (18.2% K) between Double-A/Triple-A. Refsnyder isn’t a star but has carved out a decent career. No two players are alike – I am trying to give you a reference point.

Warrecker’s High-A debut (he skipped Low-A). He stands 6’8″ and was the Yankees’ 20th-round pick in the 2023 draft out of Cal Poly. Despite his size, Warrecker isn’t a flamethrower (89-92). However, many prospects have ticked their velocity up under professional supervision.

Hudson Valley’s lone hit. He is hitting .326/.408/.500 in 213 PA. Over his 234-game career, the 22-year-old is hitting .317/.406/.475 in 976 plate appearances. I say it every night (it appears): He doesn’t stop hitting while playing anywhere they ask him to play. I don’t know what the Yankees think of him, but the numbers are there.
DH Tyler Hardman: 0-for-3, 3 K
1B Rafael Flores: 0-for-1, BB, K
His hitting streak is snapped but his on-base streak lives on. He is hitting .307/.415/.504 in 164 PA.

3B George Lombard Jr.: 0-for-3, 2 BB, K
Lombard Jr. has eight multi-walk games (only two since April). This is fine; you want to see your prospects swing the bat (as long as they are quality swings). Low-A walks aren’t getting him promoted.
SS Roderick Arias: 2-for-5, 2B (8), RBI, RS, SB (14), 2 K
Arias is off to a 6-for-21 (.286) start in June with a double, triple, and two stolen bases. Can he build off this? 
1B Dylan Jasso: 2-for-5, HR (6), 2 RBI, RS, K
Jasso is hitting .256/.350/.436 in 226 PA (15 doubles, 1 triple, 6 HR, 30 RBI, 28 R, 11.1% BB, 26.5% K). 
DH Christopher Familia: 1-for-5, K
CF Jackson Castillo: 3-for-4, K
Castillo is on a 6-game hitting streak (10-for-23) and is hitting .276/.399/.463 in 153 PA. After games of May 2, he was hitting .162/.262/.270. You have to figure he is under consideration for a promotion once they start handing them out in bulk. He has played 27 of his 37 games in CF (8 in LF, 2 as DH).
LF Willy Montero: 3-for-4, 2B (9), RS
Montero got off to a 2-for-21 start, dipping under .200 after his third game. He is finally back over that mark (.204/.266/.271 in 199 PA) thanks to a 6-for-11 stretch over the last three games.

Mayea has 32 stolen bases in 51 minor league games. A kid with his speed should be able to run at will at these lower levels.

.268/.435/.493 in 92 PA. He has five multi-hit efforts.
SS Enmanuel Tejeda: 3-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, SB (1)
Tejeda should be back in Low-A Tampa soon enough. He wasn’t out for too long with his injury.
DH Antonio Gomez: 1-for-3, RS, 2 K
At one time, Gomez was my choice as the top catching prospect in the organization. It just hasn’t come together for him. He is here on a rehab stint.
LF Wilson Rodriguez: 1-for-3, RBI, CS (1)
3B Luis Ogando: 2-for-3, RS, 2 SB (6)

RHP Sabier Marte: 4.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
The 6’5″ hurler has a 2.42 ERA (22.1 IP, 19 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 0 HR, 12 BB, 21 K). He hasn’t allowed a HR in 63 IP over the last two seasons

DSL Yankees (1-2) and DSL Bombers (1-1)

The Yankees lost, 11-2.

SS Dexters Peralta scored a run and drew a walk…3B Richard Matic and CF Gabriel Lara each had a pair of hits. The 5’9″ Lara is considered one of the fastest players in organized baseball and is an interesting long-term lottery ticket. Matic signed for $850,000. Baseball America noted that he was one of the youngest players in the 2024 class…17-year-old LHP Ronald Tejada was a bright spot on the hill (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K).

The Bombers won, 10-2. They drew 11 walks and compiled 10 hits. Walks are a good thing, but it is hard to take the insane walk rates in the DSL seriously.

CF Francisco Vilorio went 2-for-3 with an RBI, run scored, and walk. The 17-year-old is one of the bonus babies at this level. He was signed for $1.7 million…DH Richard Meran went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI. The 17-year-old played 13 games at this level in 2023…RF David Carrera went 2-for-4 with a  pair of doubles and runs scored. He added a stolen base. This is the 17-year-old’s debut season…C Queni Pineda drew three walks and scored four runs. He is another 17-year-old in his debut year…2B Christofer Reyes had two hits, two RBI, two runs, and two walks. He is 16 years old…LHP Franyer Herrera allowed one run in five innings. He struck out five. Herrera is 19 years old and this is his third season at this level…LHP Marco Manzano (20) made his professional debut, allowing a run over two innings with four strikeouts.
