Yankees MILB 6/24: Andres Chaparro Hits a Slam

I have expressed some concern about OF Jasson Dominguez‘s struggles in Double-A. While some of the numbers aren’t good, remind yourself of this: Dominguez made his Double-A debut in 2022 at the age of 19. At 19, Ezequiel Duran was struggling down in Pulaski (at the time, a Yankees’ short-season affiliate) as he hit .201/.251/.311 (48 wRC+; 3.8% BB, 28.7% K). He started to take off in 2019 and was eventually a part of the package for (ugh) Joey Gallo in 2021.

No two prospects are the same. I am not trying to convince you that Dominguez is fine because of what Duran has become. What I am trying to say is that we have to be patient sometimes. “We” includes “me.”

A report from Kiley McDaniel indicates that the Yankees may treat the 2023 MLB draft like they did the 2014 international signing period. Essentially, ignore the rules (well, more like not caring about the rules), load up on premium high school talent, and accept the penalties.

As I have said before, I like to look at patterns: Carela threw 99.1 innings for Tampa before being moved to Hudson Valley last season. He is at 90.1 innings for Hudson Valley. Let’s see if they give him a taste of Somerset sometime in the second half.

2.35 ERA (30.2 IP, 16 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 14 BB, 46 K). It comes as no surprise that the 6’8″ 23-year-old is blazing through this level.

That rare sight of Serna dropping below .300 (.298). The last time he was under .300 at the end of a game was on May 2. He went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run on May 3.

Hall has homered in three straight games. This home run turned a 6-5 deficit into a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the 8th. He is now hitting .287/.396/.472 in 212 PA with 32 walks and 42 strikeouts.

13-for-36 (.361/.528/.639; 4 doubles, 2 HR, 14 RBI, 11 BB, 9 K). He has hit safely in ten of his 11 games played (including a 7-game hitting streak)

Lacruz is an 18-year-old switch-hitter. He is only hitting .147/.383/.235 but he is showing some on-base skills + the ability to steal bases.

Yankees MILB 6/23: Everson Pereira Returns with a Bang

News:

RHP Clayton Beeter was promoted to the Scranton Railriders today. Beeter is the 9th-ranked prospect in the system (Pipeline).

In 19 starts for Somerset between 2022-2023, Beeter compiled a 2.09 ERA in 86 innings with a 117/44 K/BB ratio. I will note that his K% for Somerset has fallen from 39.4% last year to 29.7% this year.

He was acquired last season from the Los Angeles Dodgers for OF Joey Gallo.

Down in Somerset, OF Everson Pereira is finally back after an extended absence due to who knows what. Tonight was his first game since May 30th, but he was never placed on the Injured List.

Even when Serna has a period where he “slows down” (5-for-25 in his last six games), it doesn’t appear as if he is slumping. In this case, three of those five hits are doubles and one is a home run. He is hitting .303/.367/.520.

Hall has homered in back-to-back games and three times in his last five games. Defensively, he has started 19 games in CF, 12 games in RF, and eight games in LF.

His 3-run HR with two outs in the bottom of the 8th turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. He is hitting .250/.393/.409 in 224 PA with 43 walks and 40 strikeouts.

C Ben Rortvedt‘s stint on the IL didn’t last long as he was in the Scranton lineup tonight. The Railriders are now carrying four catchers (Rortvedt, Rodolfo Duran, Carlos Narvaez, and Josh Breaux). They can use the 1B and DH slots to help distribute some at-bats (Rortvedt, Narvaez, and Duran all played tonight), but they also need to make sure these players get in their time behind the plate as well.

SS Oswald Peraza missed his third straight game this evening. OF Everson Pereira (Somerset) is still out of the lineup, as well.

Since they had a need for additional bodies in Scranton, UTIL Max Burt was promoted to Scranton. Drafted in the 28th round in the 2018 draft out of Northeastern, Burt is an organizational utility player. This isn’t his first stint in Scranton (played 36 games back in 2021). When I see a player like Burt, I think of someone you are going to see coaching, scouting, or whatever they wish to do in baseball some day.

Yankees MILB 6/21: Brendan Beck’s High-A Debut

News:

RHP Brendan Beck will start his journey in Hudson Valley. He made only one rehab appearance for the FCL before this assignment.

Drafted by the Yankees in the second round of the 2021 draft, Beck underwent Tommy John surgery soon thereafter. Before the injury, he was considered a “quick rise” type of prospect. Just like Chase Hampton and Drew Thorpe (both from the 2022 draft class), he will skip Low-A, which makes sense.

At the very least, the Yankees are once again building up impressive pitching depth after trading a lot of pitching away over the last few years.

Escanio was acquired from the Brewers before he ever stepped foot on a professional diamond (signed by the Brewers on 7/2/19; traded to the Yankees on 9/1/19 for J.P. Feyereisen). He is hitting .214/.308/.265 in 251 plate appearances with a 12% BB and 28.3% K. Additionally, he has 14 stolen bases. A lottery ticket middle infielder.

LHP Carlos Rodon started his rehab stint in Somerset tonight.

IF Caleb Durbin, who is off to an impressive start in his first season with the Yankees’ organization, was placed on the injured list today for Somerset. Between Hudson Valley and Somerset, Durbin is hitting .292/.394/.400 in 216 plate appearances with 29 stolen bases in 33 attempts. He has struck out in only 6.9% of his plate appearances, which is second in all of MILB (if I don’t include players in the DSL). Only Cesar Prieto (Double-A, BAL) has a lower rate (6.8%).

Durbin was part of the package (along with RHP Indigo Diaz) that the Yankees acquired from the Braves for LHP Lucas Luetge this past winter. The Braves designated Luetge for assignment back in May and outrighted him down to Triple-A once he cleared waivers.

Breaux joins Carlos Narvaez and Rodolfo Duran as catching options in Scranton, at least for as long as Ben Rortvedt is out.

Yankees MILB 6/15: Estevan Florial Homers Twice

News:

RHP Chase Hampton has been promoted to Somerset, where he will start on Sunday.

The 21-year-old is making the rise to Double-A after only nine minor league starts, all at High-A Hudson Valley this year. He produced an impressive 2.68 ERA (2.90 FIP) over 47 innings with a 40.5% K and 8.4% BB. He allowed five home runs, just under 1.0 HR/9. Amongst all MILB pitchers with at least 40 innings, Hampton ranks 3rd in K% and 2nd in K-BB%. Both categories are led by Cincinnati’s Andrew Abbott, who is listed as MLB’s 94th-best prospect. Abbott’s stock will rise, and so will Hampton’s. Hampton is currently ranked as the Yankees’ #24 prospect (Pipeline) and could (should?) jump into the Top 5 when they do their next major update.

How far can he take this? Let’s see what happens against advanced hitters. In 2016, James Kaprielian seemed to be on a fast track before an injury crushed his season after three starts. Before him, Joba Chamberlain flew all the way up to MLB in his first professional season to help the big league bullpen (I doubt Hampton will be asked to do that).

DSL Yankees (8-0) defeated the Bombers (6-2) again, 7-3. This game was a scheduled 7-inning game. Some games in the rookie leagues are seven innings even though they aren’t part of doubleheaders. I am sure there is a reason for that.

Enough is enough – he has no business being here. If the plan is to get him to Triple-A for a week or so before promoting him to MLB, fine. I don’t think that will happen, but it would at least explain this insanity.

After games of 6/7, his SLG dropped below .500 (.495). Since that game, he is 11-for-29 with two doubles and four home runs. He has a realistic chance at a 25/25 type of season.
CF Daury Arias: 0-for-5, RS, BB, 3 K
C Agustin Ramirez: 2-for-3, HR (6), 2 RBI, 3 RS, 2 BB, K, CS (3)
.258/.402/.411 in 194 PA (5 doubles, 6 HR, 27 RBI, 32 R, 38 BB, 33 K, 6-for-9 SB). When you can maintain a BB/K over 1.00, you are doing something notable in the modern game. Ramirez is a catching prospect you need to pay attention to.

.277/.391/.418 in 169 PA. If not for his injury in his first AB last season, he likely is already up in Hudson Valley.

Escanio has struggled this season but does have four multi-hit games in his last eight games played.
3B Jesus Rodriguez: 1-for-3, 2B (7), RBI, RS, 2 BB, K
.294/.370/.405 in 174 PA (7 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR, 18 RBI, 27 R, 18 BB, 26 K (14.9%)). Rodriguez is 19-for-44 (.432) in June.

Familia has 18 RBI in 12 games. That is a testament to how well the offense is flowing right now, but also a testament to how well he is hitting (.396/.482/.875; 9-game hitting streak). Correct – that .875 is his SLG, not his OPS.
1B Omar Martinez: 0-for-4, BB, 2 K
.237/.369/.396 in 168 PA (5 doubles, 1 triple, 5 HR, 20 RBI, 18 R, 27 BB, 51 K, 3-for-4 SB). Just like Ramirez and Rodriguez, Martinez is a catcher by trade. 
RF Tayler Aguilar: 0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K, SB (4)
