Yankees MILB 7/4: Everson Pereira Homers in Triple-A Debut

News:

OF Everson Pereira is now a member of the Scranton Railriders.

Ranked as the #4 prospect in the system by Pipeline, Pereira hit well for Somerset this season. In 185 plate appearances, he hit .292/.362/.545 (143 wRC+) with ten home runs and 31 runs batted in. He plays all three outfield positions, though there is talk he is best suited at a corner. This happens to a lot of prospects as they mature. I am not sure if Pereira has completely outgrown center field, but he likely has enough bat to play a corner anyway.

The one negative in his game is a K% that sits at 29.2% this season. A high batting average and high K% typically mean a high BABIP, and that is the case with Pereira. His BABIP is .373. Also, he has a history of some annoying injuries. Last season, he set a personal best with 102 games played. An injury earlier this season likely keeps him away from breaking that record.

Can he make it to MLB in 2023? Yes. He is already on the 40-man roster, so it will be a relatively simple transaction once they deem him ready. If not, he is certainly a 2024 option if they don’t use him as trade bait.

To make room for Pereira, the Yankees demoted Elijah Dunham to Somerset. Dunham hasn’t been able to get much going this year, so perhaps this will jumpstart him into a solid second half.

Ramirez (a catcher) is 9-for-17 with three doubles and a home run since his promotion. Overall, he is hitting .269/.396/.438 in 250 PA (10 doubles, 8 HR, 37 RBI, 39 R, 44 BB, 42 K, 7-for-11 SB). You should start seeing him climb on Yankees’ prospect lists.

The Yankees have purchased RHP Jesus Liranzo from Lancaster (Independent). He was assigned to Somerset.

The 28-year-old started his professional journey in 2012. He owns a career minor league record of 11-18 with a 4.38 ERA in 212 games (15 starts). Liranzo has bounced all around the minors, having played for the Braves, Orioles, Pirates, Diamondbacks, Tigers, and Nationals. Fangraphs placed him on the “others to watch” in their minor league report on the Diamondbacks last year. He was given praise for his high-octane fastball and spin rates. I can see why the Yankees were interested.

Escanio, who is only 20, finishes June with a .294/.370/.424 line that featured both of his home runs this season. I won’t try to convince you that he is a top prospect – just showing you that a 20-year-old may be adjusting to a level.

His 2-run single with two outs in the bottom of the 9th finished off the comeback. Rodriguez is now hitting .294/.377/.423 in 224 PA with 25 walks (11.2%) and 32 strikeouts (14.3%). He finishes June 31-for-85 (.365). As stated a few days ago, he should get some more catching opportunities (in addition to his work elsewhere on the diamond) with Agustin Ramirez‘s promotion.

There is a rumor that both C Agustin Ramirez and OF Christopher Familia are on their way to Hudson Valley. Neither was in Tampa’s or Hudson Valley’s lineup tonight.

If true, they are earned promotions. Familia has made a mockery of Low-A, hitting .398/.474/.928 with 11 home runs in 21 games (95 plate appearances). He was repeating Low-A and is 23 years old, so may as well challenge him now.

Ramirez is a 21-year-old right-handed bat who is hitting .245/.384/.397 (119 wRC+) over 232 plate appearances with an 18.5% BB and 17.7% K. This is his first taste of Low-A, and he could be in High-A after only half a season.

I will note that the Yankees and the affiliates have not recognized these promotions.

Yankees MILB 6/27: Keiner Delgado Collects 3 Hits

News:

Both RHP Clayton Beeter and OF Spencer Jones are on their way to the Futures Game. The rules state that each organization must be represented and there is a maximum of only two players per organization. Jones’ first-round pedigree and Beeter’s numbers make them both solid choices.

Jones is hitting .268/.327/.496 (121 wRC+) with 19 doubles, ten home runs, and 36 runs batted in. His strikeout rate (33.1%) and ground ball rate (45.6%) are both on the high side, so he has things to work on if he wants to reach his full potential. That is true of all prospects.

Between Somerset and Scranton, Beeter is 6-3 with a 2.32 ERA in 66 innings. He owns a strong K% (29.3%), though he walks a few too many hitters. While he features an array of pitches, there are still those who believe he is a reliever long-term. For now, keep him starting until he proves he can’t.

Yankees MILB 6/25: Trey Sweeney’s Big Day

News:

I wrote briefly about the Yankees potentially blowing up the draft this year yesterday.

As for the draft itself, it all begins on July 9th. I question a lot of things that MLB does, but I think they did the right thing when they moved the draft to be part of the All-Star Game festivities. It is very hard for baseball to create a buzz around the draft. Unlike the NBA and NFL, you won’t see these players right away. The NHL is somewhat similar to baseball as there is a minor league system, but we see more teenagers in the NHL than we do in MLB. This past season, 11 teenagers played at least one NHL game.

Anyway, I am not really an MLB draft expert. I read about who the Yankees choose to get as informed as possible before they show up in my daily reports. If you want people who follow the draft more closely than I do on Twitter, you can look at Virginia Yankee or Bobby Milone.  Last year, Bobby correctly predicted the Spencer Jones pick.
