Yankees MILB 8/1: Omar Martinez Hits 3 Homers

News:

The Yankees added RHP Keynan Middleton from the Chicago White Sox for RHP Juan Carela (Rule 5 eligible).

The Yankees needed some bullpen innings (I guess) and acquired a pure rental to fill those innings. I guess that excites someone.

This year for the White Sox, the 29-year-old pitched to a 3.96 ERA in 39 games. He is showing off an impressive strikeout rate (30.1%) and, by emphasizing his changeup more, he has increased his GB rate to 50%. It was 26% in Arizona in 2022.

If Middleton started 2023 with the Yankees, we would be touting him as a major Matt Blake success story. While that is well and good, I am not sure what he adds to this bullpen for two months. He would be a nice complimentary acquisition of something bigger. As a lone acquisition, what’s the point?

Carela (21) pitched to a 3.67 ERA (3.73 FIP) over 83.1 innings for High-A Hudson Valley. His 31.1% K rate shows some of his potential, but he doesn’t possess the velocity that organizations look for. For Chicago, he represents a decent get for a rental relief pitcher. One can project him as a future reliever who focuses heavily on his breaking stuff.

The Yankees made a smaller trade for RHP Spencer Howard, giving up only cash considerations to the Texas Rangers. Howard has done nothing to thrill you in MLB, but he was ranked as the 27th prospect in MLB by Baseball America in 2021. Storing his arm in Triple-A hurts nobody, so this doesn’t bother me. If the Yankees made a meaningful acquisition today, his news would have been buried.

Yankees MILB 7/30: Agustin Ramirez Collects 3 Hits

News:

There hasn’t been much smoke surrounding the Yankees when it comes to the trade deadline.

There is talk about Gleyber Torres attracting the attention of the Marlins again. Since this is the second year in a row, perhaps they will give up something of real value for him. If I sound lukewarm, it is because I am. I need to see it to believe it.

There isn’t a magic bullet waiting in Triple-A to save this team. I like Oswald Peraza but the Yankees made their feelings known this past week. They aren’t going to use Estevan FlorialEverson Pereira and Austin Wells are the closest kids they have, but they insist on Wells catching and Pereira needs time. Andres Chaparro is a player who may provide some instant offense but he has defensive limitations. I have yet to see an evaluator who thinks he is playing third base in MLB.

I honestly don’t know what the Yankees will or can do. They have less than 48 hours to show their cards. My guess is that they will show 8-high, for those who know poker.

Scranton (46-53; 12-13 in the second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 11-8. Buffalo scored at will over the weekend)

RF Estevan Florial2-for-5, HR (23), 2 RBI, RS, K
.297/.390/.592 in 372 PA (16 doubles, 4 triples, 23 HR, 59 RBI, 63 R, 50 BB (13.4%), 109 K (29.3%), 18-for-28 SB). While he hit only three home runs in July, he finishes the month 22-for-68 (.324) with ten walks and (of course) 24 strikeouts. If it feels like he earns a hit just about every time he makes contact, you aren’t alone. His BABIP numbers continue to be insane. Entering today, his BABIP was .376. His career mark is .365. We are well beyond the point of using a sample size excuse.
SS Oswaldo Cabrera1-for-4, BB, 2 K, SB (2)
LF Everson Pereira0-for-5, 2 K
Everyone has a rough day eventually. Pereira is hitting .325/.366/.584 in 82 PA since his promotion though it comes with a 3/24 BB/K.
DH Franchy Cordero: 1-for-3, 2B (10), RS, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (4)
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-5, RS, 2 K
At this level: .272/.400/.456 in 195 PA. Narvaez goes 15-for-55 (.273) in July with three doubles and three home runs.
3B Jamie Westbrook: 2-for-4, 2B (12), HR (15), 2 RBI, RS, K
Westbrook is four home runs away from matching his season best (19 in 2018)
1B Rodolfo Duran: 2-for-3, HR (8), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Snaps a 1-for-17 slump
53 games in Somerset, 2022: .222/.266/.414 with 9 HR and 33 RBI
54 games in Scranton, 2023: .237/.308/.437 with 8 HR and 29 RBI
2B Wilmer Difo1-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, RS
CF Brandon Lockridge: 2-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, HBP, K, CS (2)
Lockridge is hitting .306/.376/.408 in 109 PA at this level and .309/.386/.459 in 223 PA overall (12 doubles, 4 triples, 3 HR, 24 RBI, 29 R, 24 BB, 52 K, 27-for-31 SB)

RHP Mitch Spence: (L, 8-6) 5 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 2 HR
5.02 ERA (107.2 IP, 112 H, 67 R, 60 ER, 22 HR, 38 BB, 92 K)

3.41 ERA (31.2 IP, 24 H, 17 R, 12 ER, 4 HR, 15 BB, 45 K)

Somerset (58-36; 16-10 in the second half) (Defeated Bowie, 6-5)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-3, RS, BB, HBP, SB (15)
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-3, RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (29)
Dominguez, who stole 11 bases in July, is now tied with Caleb Durbin for the organizational lead. Durbin has been out of action forever. I can only imagine where his total would be if he stayed healthy.
1B Ben Rice0-for-4, BB, 2 K
CF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, 2 K
3B Max Burt1-for-3, BB, K, SB (12)
2B Mickey Gasper: 1-for-4, 2 K
C Anthony Seigler1-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RS
DH Jeisson Rosario1-for-2, 2B (13), RBI, RS, SAC
I think I have typed “SAC” three or four times in the last two years – and I am not even joking. Anyway, Rosario has swatted nine doubles in his last 12 games.
RF Aaron Palensky: 2-for-4, 2B (7), HR (5), 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
Palensky really needed this. After an amazing start with Hudson Valley, he has struggled at times with Somerset. He finishes July 6-for-43.

RHP Matt Sauer5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
Nice performance by Sauer, who is up to 79 pitches. One has to assume he is ready to fully stretch out now.
RHP Jesus Liranzo0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Ryan Anderson0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

RHP Danny Watson (S, 3): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Watson continues to motor along…he has a 1.25 ERA in 21.2 IP since his promotion (9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 BB, 25 K)

Hudson Valley (54-42; 15-14 in the second half) (Shut down Hickory, 6-0)

2B Ben Cowles0-for-4, RS, BB, K, SB (13)
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-5, HR (8), RBI, RS, 2 K
.212/.261/.358 in 326 PA (10 doubles, 5 triples, 8 HR, 44 RBI, 42 R, 20 BB, 86 K, 10-for-15 SB). Vargas ties his personal best in home runs in 25 fewer games. The improvements between 2023 and 2002 are marginal, overall.
C Agustin Ramirez: 3-for-5, RS, SB (2)
Since promotion: .407/.455/.747 in 99 PA (10 doubles, 7 HR, 17 RBI, 18 R, 7 BB, 12 K, 2-for-2 SB). In 22 games at this level, he has multiple hits 12 times. He has failed to reach base in only one game. This isn’t some 23-year-old who is suddenly crushing young pitchers. He is only 21.
DH Christopher Familia0-for-2, 2 BB, HBP
Not known for his extreme plate discipline, Familia has four walks in his last two games. That brings his percentage up to 8.06% this season.
1B Spencer Henson: 4-for-4, 2B (14), 2 HR (13), SF, 4 RBI, 2 RS
.272/.358/.498 in 274 PA (14 doubles, 13 HR, 42 RBI, 45 R, 25 BB, 65 K).

CF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-5, 2 K
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-2, 2 BB, K

RHP Juan Carela2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

2.18 ERA (45.1 IP, 26 H, 14 R, 11 ER, 4 HR, 16 BB, 70 K). He has nothing else to prove here.

Tampa (46-50; 15-15 in the second half) (Defeated Dunedin, 8-3)

In July, Rodriguez goes 27-for-91 (.297) with 13 RBI and 14 runs. Overall, he is hitting .295/.368/.428 in 324 PA with 33 walks (10.2%) and 46 strikeouts (14.2%).
1B Omar Martinez: 2-for-5, HR (12), 5 RBI, 2 RS
Martinez finishes off a scorching July with a bang. He drove home four runs in a game three times this month (26 RBI overall) while going 26-for-85 (.306) with five doubles and seven home runs.  This spiked his numbers to .254/.366/.445 in 303 plate appearances with 11 doubles, 12 HR, and 49 RBI.
DH Anthony Hall3-for-5, 2B (9), RS
Hall’s second 3-hit game this season improves his line to .275/.390/.454 in 249 PA with 37 BB (14.9%) and 55 K (22.1%).

3B Brett Barrera0-for-4
C Manuel Palencia2-for-4, RS, K
Palencia’s Low-A debut. After two successful years in the DSL, he was hitting only .220/.313/.254 in 18 games for the FCL squad this season. He is 20 years old.

Overall: .308/.370/.570 in 262 PA (15 doubles, 1 triple, 15 HR, 51 RBI, 38 R, 22 BB, 76 K, 7-for-9 SB).  Where should Pereira be right now? It is easy to say to give the kid a chance in the big leagues. I don’t think the Yankees are doing that after 77 PA – but he is displaying a lot of pop in his first taste of Triple-A after showing more than enough pop in Double-A. One part of your brain is screaming at you to be patient while the other one screams “I WANT TO SEE THIS KID, DARNIT!”
C Austin Wells1-for-5, 3 K
Wells is hitting .267 (8-for-30) since his promotion. The issue is the 13 K in 35 PA (37.1%). It’s a small early sample size, of course.
3B Andres Chaparro0-for-3, BB
.249/.343/.476 in 405 PA.
LF Franchy Cordero0-for-2, HBP
   LF Brandon Lockridge1-for-1, RS
Lockridge is at .295/.362/.400 in 105 PA at this level. He has a 6-game hitting streak.
DH Carlos Narvaez0-for-3, BB, K
1B Jake Lamb1-for-4, RBI, K
2B Jamie Westbrook: 2-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB

RHP Clayton Beeter: (L, 1-2) 3.2 IP, 8 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 3 HR
Beeter entered tonight with a 3.26 ERA since his promotion. It is now 7.04 (23 IP, 23 H, 19 R, 18 ER, 6 HR, 13 BB, 25 K). What can you do? Sometimes, it simply isn’t your night. It is always important to note that, in an MLB setting, Beeter isn’t giving up 11 runs tonight. They would have pulled him at some point. In MILB, they want him to get his pitches in and evaluate. It doesn’t excuse the poor outing – it is just a different mindset sometimes when it comes to player development.
RHP Aaron McGarity2.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Deivi Garcia2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2 HR
5.36 ERA (43.2 IP, 47 H, 28 R, 26 ER, 9 HR, 29 BB, 43 K). The baseball gods gave the Yankees a free extra year to evaluate him and it hasn’t gone well. He’s earned some extra service time at least – and will get a fresh start in 2024.

Somerset (57-36; 15-10 in the second half) (Defeated Bowie, 10-3)

SS Trey Sweeney0-for-5, 2 K
Sweeney’s 11-game hitting streak is snapped.
CF Jasson Dominguez: 3-for-5, 2 2B (10), 2 RBI, RS
Dominguez is 30-for-94 (.319) in July. You can pick any prospect you wish in this system – Dominguez remains the one you want to see explode a bit. Even if he isn’t a Juan Soto-level unicorn, he can still become a top-of-the-order force for years to come. Nobody in the system has the combination of upside + closeness to MLB that he does.
3B Tyler Hardman: 1-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, HBP, K
C Ben Rice1-for-5, HR (4), 2 RBI, RS, K
Since promotion: .379 (11-for-29; 1 double, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 7 R, 3 BB, 3 K). Rice has 8 HR and 32 RBI in 32 games overall in 2023 and still has more walks (26) than strikeouts (23)
LF Elijah Dunham2-for-4, HR (5), RBI, 2 RS, 2 K, SB (11)
Dunham has certainly not pouted since his demotion, given he has five home runs and 11 stolen bases in 17 games.
1B Mickey Gasper1-for-2, RS, BB, HBP, K, 2 SB (4)
2B Max Burt0-for-3, RS, BB,3  K
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-2, SF, RBI, RS, HBP, K
DH Jeisson Rosario: 1-for-2, 2B (12), 3 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB
Rosario has eight doubles in his last 11 games.

RHP Richard Fitts: (W, 7-5)  6 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 10 K, 2 HR
Fitts’ third 10-K game this season. He owns a 3.80 ERA in 106.2 IP (96 H, 46 R, 45 ER, 17 HR, 26 BB, 118 K). You have to love his ability to pound the strike zone though it can get him in trouble when he catches too much of the plate. He has a good upside as a bulldog starting pitcher – which sometimes feels like a lost art in the modern game.
LHP Josh Maciejewski: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Alex Mauricio1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.97 ERA (34 IP, 35 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 12 BB, 35 K)

Hudson Valley (53-42; 14-14 in the second half) (Lost to Hickory, 8-6, in a 5-inning game. They battled back from a 6-0 deficit but the rain got in the way)

DH Spencer Jones1-for-4, 2 RBI, K, SB (25)
.270/.340/.474 in 371 PA (24 doubles, 4 triples, 12 HR, 49 RBI, 50 R, 34 BB, 110 K, 25-for-33 SB)
2B Ben Cowles1-for-4, 2B (13), RBI, K
.251/.340/.399 in 315 PA with a 12-for-13 SB rate.
1B Rafael Flores0-for-1, 2 BB
.290/.370/.386 in 312 PA.
LF Christopher Familia0-for-1, 2 BB, K
Since promotion: .259/.302/.481 in 86 PA. After the games of July 20th, he was hitting .190/.217/.276 at this level. I would say an adjustment was made, eh?  Overall, Familia is hitting .329/.392/.707 in 181 PA with 16 HR and 45 RBI. So, where does he fit in the prospect puzzle? I would be surprised if the midseason MLB Pipeline list doesn’t have him somewhere on the Yankees’ midseason list. He has shown enough bat to get attention.
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-3, 2 K
RF Anthony Garcia1-for-2, HR (7), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K, SB (3)
Garcia has homered in three straight games. He is hitting .197/.317/.364 in 205 PA with 31 walks (15.1%) and 75 strikeouts (36.6%). He is known as a three outcomes prospect – but he has been unable to get the K% down to any kind of reasonable rate (plus, you need at least a bit of a hit tool in the lower minors even if one projects it won’t be there in the majors)
C Antonio Gomez1-for-2, RS, BB, K
CF Grant Richardson1-for-3, RS, 2 K, SB (12)
3B Eduardo Torrealba1-for-1, 2 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, SB (7)
Torrealba has a little 5-game hitting streak going and is hitting .280/.376/.344 at this level.

RHP Drew Thorpe: (L, 10-2)  4 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 3 HR
This was bound to happen at some point, right? He was on the kind of roll that hardly anyone can sustain forever. Anyway, this jumps his ERA from 2.08 to 2.70 (103.1 IP, 78 H, 35 R, 31 ER, 9 HR, 32 BB, 128 K). He allowed eight total runs in his last nine starts entering tonight (four runs in his last eight starts). One start doesn’t kill a prospect’s value if indeed Thorpe is being discussed in trades. It is simply bad timing.
RHP Carlos Gomez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

Tampa (45-50; 14-15 in the second half) (Swept in a doubleheader by Dunedin)

Game 1 (Lost, 13-1. We shall just put this one in the shredder, eh?)

SS Jared Serna0-for-3, 2 K
C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-2, BB, K
.295/.368/.431 in 319 PA. He doesn’t have the “prospect pedigree” of others so it is hard to find a good, detailed scouting report. If he continues to hit, we’ll start seeing those scouting reports. The best I can find is from Fangraphs back in 2021 when he was on their list of “other guys we like” with a mention of liking his defense behind the plate. For Tampa, as I have mentioned, he has played C/1B/3B/LF.
1B Omar Martinez0-for-3, K
CF Daury Arias0-for-3, 2 K
DH Tayler Aguilar0-for-3, 3 K
2B Brett Barrera0-for-2, BB
LF Jake Palmer0-for-3
3B Ronny Rojas: 1-for-2, HR (8), RBI, RS, K
Tampa’s only hit goes over the fence. Rojas has four home runs in July (.244/.273/.537)
RF Felix Negueis0-for-1, BB, K

RHP Leonardo Pestana: (L, 0-5)  0.2 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
As I said last week, the Yankees are not likely to give up on a kid throwing in the mid-to-upper 90s. Today just wasn’t his day.
RHP Alex Bustamante2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Kris Bow2.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Bow is struggling, but you have to keep throwing him out there. You just never know when things will click.
RHP Cole Ayers1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Game 2 (Lost, 6-3. They loaded up the bases in the 9th but could only muster one run)

DH Jared Serna0-for-3, BB, K
.278/.348/.478 in 411 PA. His average hasn’t been this low since he was hitting .267 after games of April 25th. Whenever something like this happens with Serna, he seems to bounce right back. I do worry a little about a “full season wall” – he compiled 204 PA in 2022.
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-4, K
C Omar Martinez2-for-3, 2B (11), 2 RS, BB
.251/.366/.434 (.800 OPS) in 298 PA. He is 24-for-80 (.300/.380/.588) in July with 5 doubles, 6 HR, and 21 RBI. Nice.
CF Anthony Hall0-for-1, 2 BB
.267/.385/.446 in 244 PA. Injuries suck – but I still hope he gets to Hudson Valley soon enough.
   CF Daury Arias0-for-0, BB
Hall is still essentially rehabbing – no need to read into Arias entering the game.
3B Ronny Rojas1-for-3, RBI, BB
LF Jake Palmer0-for-2, 2 BB
1B Beau Brewer0-for-2, RBI, 2 BB, K
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-4, HR (3), RBI, RS, K
RF Felix Negueis0-for-2, BB, 2 K

RHP Hayden Merda: (L, 1-5)  4 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
RHP Matt Keating3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
3.68 ERA (44 IP, 43 H, 24 R, 18 ER, 3 HR, 23 BB, 63 K). Keating threw five different pitches tonight but focused mainly on his slider and 4-seam fastball. He maxed out at 94.3.

FCL Yankees (22-14) (Beat up on the Tigers, 11-4. I say “beat up,” but it was close for a while. The Yankees scored four runs in the 8th and 9th)

SS Keiner Delgado2-for-3, RS, BB, K, SB (22), CS (5)
Delgado was pulled early – not sure why. He is on a 10-game hitting streak (14-for-38; .368). His 22 stolen bases are at the top of the league, four ahead of Jhonson Pena (PIT).
  PH-SS Hans Montero1-for-2, 2B (6), K
While it isn’t likely, it is possible that they wanted to split this game between Delgado and Montero. I would be able to wager that Montero was scheduled to get a full day and something (hopefully minor) happened with Delgado.
3B Enmanuel Tejeda0-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K
CF Willy Montero1-for-5, 2 K
1B Kiko Romero2-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, 2 K
The professional debut for the 22-year-old left-handed bat. He was the Yankees’ 7th-round pick in this year’s draft out of Arizona. While it appears he played a little outfield for Central Arizona College, Arizona anchored him at first base. The offensive bar is already raised.
RF John Cruz2-for-4, HR (8), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
At 17 years old, Cruz already has eight home runs in 33 FCL games. That is serious power production at that level.
LF Jared Wegner1-for-5, HR (1), RBI, RS
Wegner, the Yankees’ 9th-round pick out of Arkansas, homers in his professional debut. The good news is that Wegner hit 15 home runs in 43 games for Arkansas this year. The bad news is that he is already 24 years old.
2B Dayro Perez1-for-4, RS, BB, K
C Edinson Duran: 2-for-4, RS, BB
DH Juan Sanchez2-for-5, 3B (1), HR (2), 5 RBI, 2 RS
This is what you call production from the #9 hole. The 20-year-old left-handed bat is listed as a catcher. He has appeared in only four games this season.

RHP Cam Schlittler2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
2.95 ERA in 21.1 IP (17 H, 10 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 24 K). The 22-year-old, part of last year’s draft class, is a 6’6″ kid out of Northeastern.
LHP Edwar Polimir2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
RHP Yoljeldriz Diaz (W, 1-0): 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

DSL Yankees (22-14)

Day off.

DSL Bombers (18-19)

Yankees MILB 7/28: Tyler Hardman’s Big Night

News:

The Yankees have their reasons for everything but I am befuddled by how Oswald Peraza is being handled. That’s all I am going to say about that (I said enough about it on Twitter).

Scranton (46-51; 12-10 in the second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 12-2)

CF Estevan Florial: 3-for-4, 2B (16), 2 RBI, BB, CS (10)
Florial, who is hitting .301 with a .990 OPS, has five 3+ hit games this season. He has four doubles and a homer in his last five games (8-game hitting streak)
SS Oswaldo Cabrera0-for-5, K
RF Everson Pereira3-for-5, 2B (4), 2 K
Pereira is hitting .343 with a .971 OPS since his promotion (4 doubles, 4 HR, 17 RBI). He does have 20 strikeouts in 72 PA (27.8%).
C Austin Wells1-for-4, BB, 2 K
Wells is hitting .280 (7-for-25) since his promotion with four walks and ten strikeouts.
DH Andres Chaparro0-for-2, RS, 2 BB
1B Carlos Narvaez0-for-4, 3 K
3B Jake Lamb: 2-for-3, RS, BB, K
2B Jesus Bastidas1-for-4
LF Brandon Lockridge1-for-3, BB, K

RHP Will Warren: (L, 4-4)  3 IP, 7 H, 9 R, 7 ER, 6 BB, 2 K
A rough night for Warren spikes his ERA to 5.52 at this level (44 IP, 43 H, 35 R, 27 ER, 8 HR, 26 BB, 46 K)
RHP Michael Gomez2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
LHP Anthony Misiewicz1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Zac Houston1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Somerset (56-36; 14-10 in the second half) (Blasted Bowie, 10-0)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-5, RBI, RS, K, SB (14)
11-game hitting streak. Sweeney had a .765 OPS in Hudson Valley (100 games) and now owns a .789 OPS for Somerset (98 games)
DH Jasson Dominguez1-for-5, 2 RBI, RS, K, SB (28)
Dominguez is not only hitting in July – he is frisky on the basepaths. He is now 10-for-13 stealing bases this month.
3B Tyler Hardman: 4-for-4, 2 HR (26), SF, 6 RBI, 3 RS
Not only is Hardman leading the Yankees organization in home runs, but he is also tied in the overall minor league lead (entering tonight, Shay Whitcomb (AAA, HOU) also had 26 home runs). Additionally, the six RBI sets a new personal best. Overall, Hardman is hitting .236/.328/.561 in 326 PA (9 doubles, 2 triples, 26 HR, 55 RBI, 55 R, 39 BB, 109 K, 9-for-12 SB). He has five multi-HR games.
CF Elijah Dunham1-for-5, 2B (4), RBI, SB (10)
1B Mickey Gasper1-for-4, K
2B Max Burt0-for-3, BB, K, SB (11)
C Anthony Seigler0-for-2, RS, BB
  C Josh Breaux1-for-1
LF Aaron Palensky0-for-3, RS, HBP, K
RF Jeisson Rosario: 3-for-3, 2 2B (11), 3 RS, BB
.207/.343/.359 in 306 PA (11 doubles, 9 HR, 32 RBI, 36 R, 52 BB, 98 K, 9-for-14 SB). He had a 3-hit game on July 19th as well.

LHP Nestor Cortes4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
He appears to be on track to get back into the rotation soon.
LHP Ryan Anderson: (W, 1-0) 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
LHP Lisandro Santos1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.63 ERA (48 IP, 28 H, 23 R, 14 ER, 2 HR, 33 BB, 52 K). He is a hard-throwing lefty with a lot of control issues.
RHP Bailey Dees1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Double-A debut is a clean enough one.
RHP Blas Castano1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (53-40; 14-13 in the second half) (Mauled Hickory, 11-2)

CF Spencer Jones: 1-for-4, 2B (24), RS, BB, K, SB (24)
Jones has four doubles and three stolen bases in his last six games.
LF Christopher Familia: 2-for-5, HR (5), RBI, RS, 3 K
Familia has homered in four straight games and has 16 HR and 45 RBI in 40 games between here and Tampa. In his last 9 games: 13-for-37 (.351) with four home runs and nine runs batted in.
DH Agustin Ramirez1-for-4, RS, BB
Ramirez decided to let his teammates do most of the heavy lifting tonight. He is on a 5-game hitting streak (has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games) and is hitting .395 since his promotion.
C Rafael Flores0-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB, 2 K
SS Alexander Vargas2-for-4, HR (7), 4 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Vargas has two 4-RBI games in his last three games played. It would be nice to see him get on a late-season surge.
1B Spencer Henson: 1-for-4, RS, HBP, K
RF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Obviously not known for his power, Sanchez has homered in back-to-back games.
2B Luis Santos0-for-4, RBI, BB, 3 K
3B Marcos Cabrera: 2-for-5, HR (6), 3 RBI, RS, 2 K

LHP Brock Selvidge: (W, 1-0)  7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K
Absolutely brilliant performance in his second High-A start. Between here and Tampa, he now owns a 101/24 K/BB over 88.2 IP. There is little to complain about in his 2023 profile.
RHP Shane Gray: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Tampa (45-48; 14-13 in the second half)

The game against Dunedin was postponed. They will try their best to play two tomorrow. The starting lineup was posted and is below.

SS Jared Serna0-for-0
Serna is hitting .283/.351/.486 (125 wRC+; 9.2% BB, 16.3% K) in 404 PA. He is 19-for-25 stealing bases. While Serna is playing a lot of shortstop, I have yet to read a report that suggests that will be his future gig. It doesn’t hurt to give him a lot of reps there, of course.
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-0
Rodriguez is hitting .297/.368/.434 (120 wRC+; 9.8% BB, 14.2% K) in 316 PA. He is 15-for-17 stealing bases.
C Omar Martinez0-for-0
Martinez is hitting .249/.364/.433 (120 wRC+; 14.4% BB, 27.5% K) in 291 PA. You have to like the ability to take walks but the strikeout rate will need to come down somewhat.
CF Daury Arias0-for-0
.233/.328/.343 in 323 PA (89 wRC+; 11.8% BB, 20.1% K) in 323 PA.
DH Tayler Aguilar0-for-0
2B Brett Barrera0-for-0
LF Jake Palmer0-for-0
1B Beau Brewer0-for-0
RF Felix Negueis0-for-0

RHP Leonardo Pestana0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

FCL Yankees (21-14) (Defeated the Tigers, 4-2)

2B Keiner Delgado1-for-4, 2B (11), RS, SB (21)
Delgado now has a 9-game hitting streak (12-for-35; 1 double, 2 HR, 6-for-7 SB)
3B Enmanuel Tejeda0-for-3, BB, K
CF Willy Montero1-for-4, RBI, RS, 2 K
.331/.382/.446′ in 144 PA. Montero has 31 RBI in 32 games.
SS Hans Montero1-for-4, RS, K
With Roderick Arias out, Montero will get a lot of time at shortstop.

LHP Henry Lalane3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, HR
The 6’7″ 19-year-old has a 14/1 K/BB over 11 innings.
RHP Eric Reyzelman1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
The hard thrower hopefully won’t be here for long.
LHP Allen Facundo (W, 4-0): 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
1.64 ERA (22 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 11 BB, 30 K).

DSL Yankees (22-14) (Had a tough day against Rangers Red, 12-3)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-4, RBI, RS, SB (16)
C Jose Gonzalez0-for-3, BB, 2 K
After a .462/.633/.808 start, Gonzalez has “shockingly” dipped to .375/.558/.656.
1B Jhon Imbert0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (12)
The 19-year-old is hitting .307/.459/.560 in 98 PA with 12 stolen bases in 13 attempts. Imbert is officially listed as a shortstop but has never played a game there professionally.

RHP Joshua Quezada5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
3.98 ERA (31.2 IP, 29 H, 17 R, 14 ER, 2 HR, 14 BB, 35 K)

DSL Bombers (18-19) (Lost to the DSL Marlins, 7-4)

CF Richard Meran1-for-4, 2 BB, K, CS (1)
3B-2B Gabriel Terrero1-for-3, 2B (7), RBI, RS, 2 BB, HBP, SB (12)
.319/.413/.574 in 109 PA (7 doubles, 1 triple, 5 HR, 21 RBI, 24 R, 13 BB, 21 K, 12-for-16 SB)
RF Gabriel Lara0-for-2, HBP, 2 K
2B-RF Geyber Blanco1-for-2, RBI, RS, 3 HBP
Ouch! By the way, he moved to RF after Lara left the game (I assume due to the HBP)

Yankees MILB 7/27: Jasson Dominguez Collects 3 Hits

News:

Both C Anthony Seigler (Somerset) and OF Anthony Hall (Tampa) returned from lengthy injury list stays today. Seigler is readded to the upper-level catcher mix, where the Yankees have several prospects competing for playing time.

Scranton (46-50; 12-9 in the second half) (Defeated Buffalo, 5-1)

LF Estevan Florial1-for-5, 2B (15), RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
Florial has a 7-game hitting streak (9-for-27). He has four doubles and a homer during the streak.
SS Oswaldo Cabrera1-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, BB, K, SB (1)
The only thing he can do is perform down here and earn his way back.
C Austin Wells2-for-4, BB
Wells is hitting .286 (6-for-21) with two doubles and two walks since his promotion.
3B Andres Chaparro2-for-4, BB, K
Chaparro is 22-for-68 (.324) in July with 11 walks.
DH Franchy Cordero2-for-5, 2 RBI, K
2B Jamie Westbrook1-for-2, RS, 3 BB, K
1B Rodolfo Duran0-for-4, BB
RF Michael Hermosillo1-for-4, BB, 3 K
CF Brandon Lockridge2-for-5, RBI, RS, K, SB (10)
Lockridge is 10-for-11 stealing bases at this level and 27-for-30 overall. He is 14-for-43 (.326) in July.

RHP Randy Vasquez4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
5.04 ERA (69.2 IP, 73 H, 43 R, 39 ER, 8 HR, 39 BB, 80 K). Just like with Jhony Brito, his numbers down here don’t concern me.
RHP Zach Greene2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Matt Bowman1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Greg Weissert1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Somerset (55-36; 13-10 in the second half) (Defeated Bowie, 4-3, in ten innings)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K
Sweeney now has a 10-game hitting streak and has 14 walks in July. His hit tool is legit.
RF Willie Calhoun1-for-5, K
LF Jasson Dominguez3-for-5, RBI, K, SB (27)
Dominguez is now at a season-high .223 (correct – he has not been above .223 all season) thanks to his first 3-hit game since May 16th. He is 26-for-84 (.310) in July.

10-for-24 with three walks and two strikeouts since his promotion.
2B Max Burt0-for-3, K
   2B Mickey Gasper1-for-2, RBI
Walk-off single in the 10th.
DH Anthony Seigler0-for-3, RS, BB
Seigler’s first game since June 25th.
C Josh Breaux: 3-for-4, 2B (2), HR (3), 2 RBI, RS
His 2-run HR with one out in the 9th tied the game.
CF Jeisson Rosario0-for-3, BB, K, SB (9)

RHP Yoendrys Gomez2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, HR
1.72 ERA (31.1 IP, 18 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 20 BB, 36 K)
LHP Edgar Barclay: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

RHP Danny Watson: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Since promotion: 1.31 ERA (20.2 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 24 K). The dominance is so overwhelming that you wonder if a trip to Scranton is in the cards. They can replace him with Jack Neely here.
RHP Jesus Liranzo: (W, 1-0)  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
A much-needed dominant effort for Liranzo.

Hudson Valley (52-40; 13-13 in the second half) (Lost to Hickory, 6-5)

CF Spencer Jones0-for-5, K
SS Ben Cowles1-for-5, K
C Agustin Ramirez2-for-4, HR (7), RBI, 2 RS
Ramirez has homered in four straight games and has three straight multi-hit games (11 since his promotion). He is hitting .402/.449/.780 in 89 PA since his promotion and .293/.402/.515 in 321 PA overall. He has to be on the list of Yankees breakout prospects in 2023.
1B Rafael Flores: 2-for-3, HR (4), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Flores has quietly hit .295/.375/.392 in 305 PA. He has three consecutive multi-hit games. I guess much of his prospect value will be dependent on whether he is capable behind the plate or if he is a 1B-only type.
RF Anthony Garcia1-for-3, HR (6), 2 RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
Garcia has homered in back-to-back games and has drawn at least one walk in five straight games.
DH Antonio Gomez0-for-4, 4 K

3B Eduardo Torrealba1-for-4, K
2B Luis Santos1-for-4, K

RHP Zach Messinger5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, HR
4.09 ERA (83.2 IP, 73 H, 49 R, 38 ER, 12 HR, 42 BB, 101 K). For Tampa last year, in the same exact number of innings, he pitched to a 4.30 ERA with a 112/45 K/BB ratio. He allowed seven fewer home runs.
LHP Joel Valdez: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
LHP Clay Aguilar (L, 3-1): 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (45-48; 14-13 in the second half) (Defeated Dunedin, 6-5, on a walk-off single/error)

2B Jared Serna0-for-5, RBI
One is shocked when Serna puts up an 0-for-5, but at least he drove in a run (66th this season)
3B Jesus Rodriguez: 2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (15)
He keeps flirting with .300 (including going over that mark during the game). He is on a 5-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games. The 15-for-17 SB rate is an added bonus.
C Omar Martinez1-for-5, SB (8)
CF Anthony Hall0-for-2, SF, RBI
Hall, hitting .269/.382/.448 in 241 PA, plays in his first game since July 4th.
   CF Daury Arias1-for-2, K
He hit the single in the 9th that scored Rodriguez on an error.
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, BB
RF Tayler Aguilar: 0-for-2, 2 K
RF Felix Negueis1-for-1, HR (2), RBI, RS, BB
A nice job off the bench.

FCL Yankees (20-14) (Defeated the Blue Jays, 6-2)

2B Keiner Delgado1-for-4, RS

3B Enmanuel Tejeda1-for-4, 3B (3), RBI, RS
.315/.483/.472 in 145 PA (.289/.463/.493 in 188 PA in the DSL in 2022). His BB/K ratio is exactly 1.00 (31/31)
CF Willy Montero0-for-4, K
.333/.386/.452 in 140 PA. Montero is 23-for-57 (.404) in July. Even with today’s 0-for, he has ten hits in his last five games.
SS Hans Montero1-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
.265/.445/.444 in 155 PA. After a red-hot start, he is slumping in July (.160/.333/.200) but his overall line remains strong.
RF John Cruz2-for-3, RS, BB
.256/.343/.487 in 134 PA. Cruz has an impressive 7 HR and 32 RBI in 31 games.
LF Jose Mendez1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS
The 20-year-old is no stranger to the home run, hitting 12 HR in 108 games down in the DSL.
C Manuel Palencia1-for-4, RBI, RS
DH Juan Sanchez2-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI
Sanchez (20) has only five plate appearances this season. He is l isted as a catcher.
1B Kelvin Espino1-for-3

RHP Luis Serna2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

DSL Yankees (22-13) (Lead LAD Bautista, 4-1, in the second inning. The game was suspended at that point. I don’t see a completion date listed. By the way, LAD Bautista is 30-6)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-2
DH Josue Gonzalez1-for-1, 2B (11), RS
The double isn’t official (yet) but it would be his 11th in 21 games.

DSL Bombers (18-18) (Destroyed Rangers Blue, 17-6, in a rain-shortened (7 innings) affair)

CF Richard Meran0-for-0, HBP
He left the game after the HBP.
  PR-RF Abrahan Ramirez: 1-for-2, 2 RBI, 2 RS, 3 BB, 2 SB (6)
Not bad for someone who wasn’t scheduled to play…
C Edgleen Perez2-for-4, 2B (6), 2 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB
RF-CF Gabriel Lara2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 RS
.278/.398/.454 in 133 PA (5 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR, 25 RBI, 25 R, 21 BB, 22 K, 12-for-16 SB). A strong debut season.

Nothing to report.

Scranton (45-50; 11-9 in the second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 14-2)

LF Estevan Florial1-for-5, HR (22), RBI, RS, 2 K
His leadoff blast put the Railriders up 1-0 – it was downhill from there. He is on a 6-game hitting streak and is hitting .327/.424/.571 in July.

CF Everson Pereira0-for-4, 3 K

RHP Zac Houston2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR

Somerset (54-36; 12-10 in the second half) (Lost to Bowie, 6-5)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-5, 2 K
Sweeney now has a 9-game hitting streak.
DH Willie Calhoun1-for-5
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-4, BB, 2 K
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
I am not sure if Hardman will ever have a low strikeout rate – so adding in some value through walks will be imperative if he wants to reach his big-league potential.
CF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, K
C Ben Rice0-for-3, RS, BB, K
Since promotion: 10-for-20 (1 double, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 6 R, 2 BB, 2 K)
1B Mickey Gasper2-for-4, 2B (4), RBI, RS, K
2B Max Burt: 3-for-3, 2 2B (7), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Burt has four doubles in his last five games.
RF Jeisson Rosario: 2-for-4, 2B (9), 2 RBI, K

RHP Chase Hampton: 5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 8 K, HR
4.54 ERA since his promotion (39.2 IP, 35 H, 21 R, 20 ER, 6 HR, 14 BB, 48 K). Overall, he owns a 125/30 K/BB over 86.2 IP. It is easy to forget that this is Hampton’s first professional season.
RHP Tanner Myatt: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Alex Mauricio1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
4.09 ERA (33 IP, 34 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 4 HR, 12 BB, 34 K)
LHP Josh Maciejewski: (L, 0-2) 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR

Hudson Valley (52-39; 13-12 in the second half) (Shut down Hickory, 7-0)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-5, 2B (23), RS, K, SB (23)
Jones now has a 7-game hitting streak that features three doubles and a pair of home runs. He is hitting .275/.345/.484 in 357 PA with a 29.97% K rate.
2B Ben Cowles1-for-4, RS, HBP, 2 K, SB (12)
DH Agustin Ramirez2-for-4, HR (6), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Ramirez has homered in three straight games and in four of his last five contests. He has ten multi-hit games in 19 games since his promotion. Just pure dominant play and I can see him getting his feet wet in Somerset this year if he keeps this up. He is what you would call an exploding prospect at 21 years old.
LF Christopher Familia1-for-4, HR (4), 4 RBI, RS
Familia has homered in three straight games and has 15 home runs and 44 RBI in 39 games between here and Tampa.
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, K
1B Spencer Henson1-for-3, HR (11), RBI, RS, BB
Henson sets a new personal best for HR in a season (he has 21 HR in 134 games over the last two seasons)
C Antonio Gomez3-for-4, K
I know following prospects can often turn into a “flavor of the month” but Ramirez has moved ahead of Gomez on the catching depth chart, I assume. That said, Gomez is a no-doubt-about-it catcher who still has time to grow. He is hitting .243/.307/.343. While he is Rule 5 eligible, it is highly doubtful anyone will touch him.
RF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-3, BB, K

RHP Brendan Beck3.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Beck loaded the bases with nobody out at one point…struck out the next two hitters before inducing a popup. At this level: 0.60 ERA in 15 IP (13 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 16 K)
RHP Luis Velasquez (W, 1-1): 3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Since promotion: 3.63 ERA (17.1 IP, 14 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 20 K)
RHP Jack Neely: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
With Danny Watson and Bailey Dees up in Somerset, Neely must be wondering when it will be his turn. He owns a 2.28 ERA in 43.1 IP (24 H, 14 R, 11 ER, 4 HR, 16 BB, 67 K)

Tampa (44-48; 13-13 in the second half) (Knocked out Dunedin, 8-2)

2B Jared Serna0-for-3, RS, 2 BB
.287/.356/.493 in 399 PA.
C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-5, SB (14)
.296/.368/.434 in 311 PA. His offensive production has been consistent throughout 2023. As for the catching thing, I am not sure what the Yankees think of him behind the plate. They move him around the field, though 3B has been his other primary position.
1B Omar Martinez2-for-5, 2B (10), HR (11), 2 RBI, 2 RS
.250/.367/.438 in 286 PA (10 doubles, 1 triple, 11 HR, 44 RBI, 38 R, 42 BB, 80 K).
SS Brenny Escanio1-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K
CF Daury Arias1-for-3, 2 RS, BB, K
LF Jake Palmer3-for-4, 2 RBI, RS, K
Palmer has three 3-hit games in July.
DH Ronny Rojas1-for-3, SF, 2 RBI
RF Felix Negueis0-for-2, RS, BB, HBP
3B Jose Colmenares0-for-2, 2 BB, K, CS (1)

RHP Justin Lange: (W, 1-3) 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K
This is the kind of line you dream of with Lange – because if he ever unlocks himself, this is his potential. Anyway, he now owns a 4.92 ERA in 64 IP (44 H, 39 R, 35 ER, 7 HR, 51 BB, 102 K)
RHP Montana Semmel2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Semmel hit 95.6 on the gun tonight.
RHP Cole Ayers1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.98 ERA (40.2 IP, 40 H, 21 R, 18 ER, 3 HR, 14 BB, 56 K). Ayers threw five different pitches in his short outing (sinker, 4-seam, cutter, slider, change).

FCL Yankees (19-14)

Day off.

DSL Yankees (22-13) (Lost the completion of a suspended game to the Blue Jays, 7-2. The game ended after only five innings)

I am not going to dig too much into the box score from this game – most of what happened occurred days ago.

CF Brando Mayea0-for-3, K
C Josue Gonzalez2-for-2, RS, SB (5)
.393/.571/.689 in 91 PA (10 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 20 RBI, 20 R, 24 BB, 11 K, 5-for-7 SB)

DSL Bombers (17-18) (Trail Arizona Red, 4-3, in the third inning. The game was suspended due to lightning)

Again, not going to focus much on what has happened thus far in this one.

Yankees MILB 7/25: Ben Rice is Lovin’ Double-A

News:

The Yankees have released a pair of veteran relievers.

RHP Michael Feliz, signed on May 18th, was released from his contract. He reportedly will sign with a team in Japan. The veteran pitched to a decent 3.38 ERA in only 13.1 innings with a 15/5 K/BB.
LHP D.J. Snelten was also cut. Snelten, who hadn’t pitched since making 20 starts with the Chicago Dogs (Independent) in 2019, was an interesting story but he simply did not perform. He compiled a 7.50 ERA in 30 games with Scranton, with a 48/42 K/BB over 36 innings.

RHP Bailey Dees was promoted from Hudson Valley to Somerset today, reuniting with former bullpen mate Danny Watson to form a towering duo. Dees, who stands 6’8″, pitched to a 1.74 ERA and 59/15 K/BB ratio over 41.1 innings. He was the Yankees’ 18th-round pick in the 2021 draft out of Penn State.

Scranton (45-49; 11-8 in the second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 3-1)

CF Estevan Florial: 2-for-3, 2B (14), RS, BB, K

2B Jamie Westbrook0-for-3

RHP Jhony Brito: (L, 2-2) 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
5.45 ERA (36.1 IP, 40 H, 23 R, 22 ER, 16 BB, 33 K). Do his Triple-A numbers matter? Not really.
RHP Michael Gomez1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Anthony Misiewicz1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K

Somerset (54-35; 12-9 in the second half) (Shut out Bowie, 6-0, in a 6-inning game (rain))

FYI: If you see any numbers below that don’t match up to other numbers you are seeing, it is due to July 9th. That game was suspended and MILB.com is treating it weirdly. The overall numbers include that game – the splits do not. So, when you see “numbers in July” below, keep in mind that one game is currently not included.

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, HR (13), RBI, RS, K
The home run was a lead-off blast. Sweeney is hitting .253/.369/.437 in 396 PA. In July, he is hitting .288/.413/.455 in 17 games (3 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 14 R, 12 BB, 15 K). He has shown more against RHP (.856 OPS) than LHP (.630) but there is no reason for concern. Just something to watch.
RF Willie Calhoun: 2-for-3, BB
CF Jasson Dominguez1-for-3, RS, BB, K, SB (26), CS (6)
.220/.349/.368 in 392 PA. In 18 July games, Dominguez is hitting .307/.381/.427.
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-3, RS, BB, K
.230/.321/.544 in 312 PA.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-0
He left the game early – never a good thing.
 1B Mickey Gasper: 1-for-2, 2 RS, BB
LF Elijah Dunham2-for-2, SF, RBI, SB (9), CS (2)
Dunham has a 5-game hitting streak (9-for-21) and has 21 stolen bases in 27 tries between here and Scranton.
DH Ben Rice2-for-2, HR (3), 4 RBI, RS, BB
Since promotion: 10-for-17 (.588) with three home runs in four games. Overall, Rice is hitting .365/.516/.646 in 128 spectacular plate appearances. I don’t know if catching is part of the long-term plan, but the Yankees seem to have an intriguing hitter here.
C Josh Breaux0-for-3, K
2B Max Burt0-for-1, 2 BB, K, CS (3)

RHP Blane Abeyta (W, 6-4): 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K

Hudson Valley (51-39; 12-12 in the second half) (Smoked Hickory, 16-5)

CF Spencer Jones3-for-6, RBI, RS, K
Jones now has a 6-game hitting streak (11-for-27 (.407); 2 doubles, 2 HR, 6 RBI). This is his 10th 3+ hit game this season (including one on 7/21). It’s been a season of streaks for Jones, but the overall resume is a good one.
2B Ben Cowles1-for-6, RS, 3 K
C Agustin Ramirez: 2-for-6, HR (5), 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
Ramirez is hitting .392 with 15 extra-base hits (10 doubles, 5 HR) in 18 games since his promotion.
1B Rafael Flores2-for-5, 3 RS, BB, 3 K
Flores has five 2-hit games in his last nine games played (hitless in the other four games)
DH Christopher Familia: 3-for-4, HR (3), RBI, 3 RS, BB
Familia has two 3-hit games in his last three games played. He is up to .254 since his promotion.
SS Alexander Vargas2-for-4, 3B (5), 4 RBI, 4 RS, BB
Vargas takes over the organizational lead with his 5th triple. This is his second 4-RBI game this season (first 4-run game).
RF Grant Richardson1-for-5, 2 RBI, RS, K
LF Anthony Garcia2-for-2, 2B (6), HR (5), 3 RBI, RS, 3 BB

Tampa (43-48; 12-13 in the second half) (Lost to Dunedin, 5-1)

2B Jared Serna1-for-4, K, SB (19)

Overall, he is hitting .351 (33-for-94; 6 doubles, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 26 R, 23 BB, 21 K, 4-for-4 SB). .272/.344/.485 in 346 PA (22 doubles, 4 triples, 12 HR, 46 RBI, 47 R, 33 BB, 105 K, 22-for-30 SB). His K% is 30.3. He will need to cut that down, but we have to accept that a kid with his size is going to strike out. Don’t just focus on that, though. He is showing off solid power and can be a sneaky base stealer.
3B Ben Cowles1-for-3, HBP, 2 K, 2 SB (10), CS (1)
DH Agustin Ramirez0-for-3, BB, SB (1)
This snaps his 8-game hitting streak though he still has a 9-game on-base streak. Ramirez is 26-for-64 (.406) since his promotion.

2.08 ERA (99.1 IP, 69 H, 27 R, 23 ER, 6 HR, 31 BB, 124 K). The conspiracy theorist could say that the Yankees are keeping him here to keep his value up. While I can see that happening, an opposing thought could be that he would be worth even more if he went to Double-A and put together a strong effort. Whatever the case is, this is the reality: He does not belong here. These hitters have no chance against him and everyone needs to see how he can do against more advanced competition.
RHP Jack Neely (S, 5): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Neely is also in line for a promotion. He owns a 2.61 ERA in 41.1 IP (25 H, 14 R, 12 ER, 4 HR, 14 BB, 66 K)

The 18-year-old has flashed his speed in his 59-game career (29-for-34 SB) but hasn’t yet shown off a hit tool.

DSL Bombers (16-17) (Defeated the Cardinals, 9-2)

CF Richard Meran: 0-for-0, 2 RS, 2 BB, SB (1)

Yankees MILB 7/21: Spencer Jones Collects 3 Hits

News:

C Austin Wells was promoted to Scranton today, and instantly placed in the cleanup spot.

Wells, the Yankees’ first-round pick in the 2020 COVID draft, hit .248/.343/.460 in 113 Double-A games with 22 doubles, 1 triple, 23 HR, and 93 RBI. Whether he can stick behind the plate is still a matter of debate.

Scranton (43-47; 9-6 in the second half) (Lead Worcester, 4-0, in the 4th. The game was suspended due to a power outage. They will conclude this tomorrow afternoon (playing out the entire 9 innings) before a 7-inning nightcap)

CF Greg Allen0-for-1, RS, HBP
DH Jake Bauers: 2-for-2, 2B (7), RS
LF Everson Pereira0-for-2, 2 K
C Austin Wells1-for-1, RS, BB
Triple-A debut.
3B Andres Chaparro0-for-1, BB
1B Carlos Narvaez1-for-2, HR (8), 2 RBI, RS, K
2B Jamie Westbrook0-for-0, RBI, BB, CI, CS (4)
RF Brandon Lockridge0-for-2
SS Wilmer Difo0-for-1, K

RHP Will Warren3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K
Warren was throwing well, but his outing will be cut short. At this level: 4.39 ERA (41 IP, 36 H, 26 R, 20 ER, 8 HR, 20 BB, 44 K)

Somerset (51-35; 9-9 in the second half) (Crushed Hartford, 9-2)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-5, RBI, RS, K
Sweeney increases his hitting streak to five (8-for-25; 2 doubles, 1 triple, 8 RBI).
CF Jasson Dominguez1-for-5, RBI, RS, K
.216/.349/.371 in 378 PA (8 doubles, 2 triples, 12 HR, 46 RBI, 60 R, 64 BB, 103 K, 25-for-29 SB). There is still plenty of time to go, but I wonder how his season will be judged when all is said and done.
3B Tyler Hardman1-for-3, HR (23), 2 RBI, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
A new career best (23 HR in 71 games this year; 22 in 111 games last year). Hardman hits his bombs in bunches. He hit home runs in three straight games in early June and had a stretch where he hit six home runs in six games (including three in one game). While he has enough pop to make it to the big leagues, it is the strikeouts that are a problem: 101 in 302 PA (33.4%).
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-5, 2 K
RF Elijah Dunham1-for-5, HR (3), RBI, RS, K
Dunham has homered in back-to-back games and has hit safely in nine of his last ten games.
DH Ben Rice2-for-5, RS
Rice has back-to-back 2-for-5 efforts to begin his Double-A journey.
LF Aaron Palensky1-for-5, 2B (6), RS, K
C Josh Breaux1-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
Breaux is 5-for-25 at this level. Overall, in 23 games, he is hitting .191/.250/.303.
2B Max Burt: 2-for-2, 2B (5), RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB
.268/.358/.500 at this level.

RHP Yoendrys Gomez3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
1.26 ERA (28.2 IP, 15 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 17 BB, 34 K). He is throwing very well in his limited spurts. Tonight, he tossed 57 pitches.
LHP Edgar Barclay: (W, 3-1) 4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, HR
1.20 ERA (30 IP, 23 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 45 K). Barclay hadn’t allowed a home run since September 15, 2021. He tossed 67.1 homerless innings in 2022. You are looking at a legit swingman type of prospect here who can probably start, pitch in the middle innings, and even give you some late-inning production. You are probably thinking about guys like Ramiro Mendoza or Alfredo Aceves, etc.
LHP Josh Maciejewski1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (49-38; 10-11 in the second half) (Lost to Brooklyn, 8-7)

CF Spencer Jones: 3-for-5, 2B (21), RBI, 3 RS, SB (22)
Jones has nine 3+ hit games this season. He is 15-for-43 (.349) in July (2 doubles, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 9 R, 10 BB, 9 K, 4 SB)
SS Ben Cowles: 1-for-4, 2B (12), SF, RBI
C Rafael Flores0-for-1, 3 BB, HBP
Flores collects his first career 3-BB game.
RF Christopher Familia3-for-5, 2B (3), 2 RBI, RS
Familia has been struggling a bit since his promotion, so this game was needed. He is now 14-for-63 (.222; 3 doubles, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 9 R). Overall, he has 10 doubles, 2 triples, 12 HR, 38 RBI, and 34 runs scored in 36 games between here and Tampa.
DH Antonio Gomez0-for-5, 4 K
1B Spencer Henson1-for-5, HR (10), RBI, RS, K
Henson ties his personal best for HR in a season (61 games this year; 71 games in 2022). Overall, he has 28 HR and 98 RBI in 160 career games.
LF Anthony Garcia0-for-4, RS, BB, 3 K
2B Eduardo Torrealba1-for-3, 2B (5), RS, BB, HBP
3B Marcos Cabrera1-for-5

LHP Brock Selvidge4.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
It wasn’t a spectacular High-A debut, but he battled to keep runs off the board.
RHP Luis Velasquez1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
LHP Clay Aguilar: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
3.98 ERA (20.1 IP, 16 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 10 BB, 31 K)
RHP Carlos Gomez: (L, 2-3)  1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Harrison Cohen0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (42-46; 11-11 in the second half) (Lost to Clearwater, 7-0. After a pair of slugfests, Tampa hasn’t scored a run in the last two games)

2B Jared Serna1-for-4, BB, SB (17)
This is Serna’s first stolen base since June 20th. It was only his second attempt this month. Just one of those weird things. Serna is 21-for-69 (.304). He hit .310 in April, .305 in May, and .263 in June (though that came with five home runs and 21 RBI). Just remarkable consistency.
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, K
.292/.369/.432 in 294 PA. His 6-game hitting streak is snapped.
C Omar Martinez0-for-3, BB, 2 K
.244/.364/.409 in 269 PA. He is 16-for-54 (.296) in July with four home runs and 16 RBI.
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, HBP
Escanio draws walks (52; .335 OBP) but hasn’t done enough in the contact department. The Yankees took him as a lottery ticket from the Brewers for J.P. Feyereisen.
CF Daury Arias0-for-3, BB, 2 K
DH Brett Barrera0-for-1, 2 HBP
  PR-DH Beau Brewer0-for-1
LF Jake Palmer1-for-3, BB
1B Ronny Rojas0-for-4, 2 K
RF Felix Negueis1-for-3, BB

RHP Leonardo Pestana: (L, 0-4)  2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
4.87 ERA (40.2 IP, 38 H, 23 R, 22 ER, 7 HR, 21 BB, 54 K). This is his new personal best for innings in a season – beating the mark he set in 2019. Injuries, injuries, injuries. By the way, the Yankees are unlikely to give up on this kid, as he is pumping upper-90s fastballs.
RHP Ocean Gabonia2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Yorlin Calderon2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.00 ERA (51 IP, 41 H, 20 R, 17 ER, 13 BB, 64 K). Calderon doesn’t throw hard, but he does have a starter’s arsenal (sinker, slider, change, curve).
RHP Montana Semmel1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

FCL Yankees (18-13) (Lost to the Tigers, 4-3, in ten innings)

DH Keiner Delgado: 2-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, 2 SB (20)
Delgado has ten multi-hit games (29 games played).
SS Hans Montero0-for-5, 4 K
It happens to everyone….
RF Willy Montero0-for-4, BB, K
3B Enmanuel Tejeda: 1-for-5, RBI, 2 K
CF John Cruz1-for-4, HR (6), RBI, RS, 2 K
Cruz, still only 17, has 11 home runs in 52 minor league games.
LF Joel Mendez3-for-4, 2B (4)

RHP Luis Serna2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
7.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 10 K. The important thing is that he is showing signs of being back on track after missing a vast majority of the season.
RHP Anderson Munoz2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
The 24-year-old is on a rehab assignment. He has made it as high as High-A Hudson Valley, where he pitched to a 4.41 ERA in 32.2 innings last season (48/12 K/BB)
LHP Miguel Pozo2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Steven Fulgencio (L, 0-1): 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
The 22-year-old was signed all the way back in 2018, but didn’t make his debut until 2022.

DSL Yankees (20-10) (Lost to DSL Tampa Bay, 8-3)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-4, BB
Mayea is 9-for-41 in July, but has walked 12 times.
SS Santiago Gomez0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
1B Jhon Imbert0-for-1, 3 BB
3B Luis Ogando3-for-4, 2B (9), HR (4), 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (10)
Ogando is a 19-year-old right-handed bat who has played in 58 games at this level over the last two seasons (.330/.406/.519 in 226 PA)

RHP Yordanny Sosa2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Sosa pitched in 12 games back in his 2019 debut season, posting a 2.21 ERA (though that came with a 9/12 K/BB ratio), Then, he disappeared for four years and is back now. Injuries suck.

DSL Bombers (15-17) (Destroyed DSL Miami, 12-1. Talk about a bunch of baserunners: They compiled 13 hits and 14 walks while Miami commited three errors. This game had real 28-1 DSL potential. Trust me, stuff like that has happened before at this level!)

SS Ovandy Frias3-for-5, RBI, 2 RS, BB, 2 K, 3 SB (10)
Have yourself a morning/afternoon, Ovandy! It is hard to find much out there on the 19-year-old, who is in his debut season.
C Johan Contreras3-for-5, 2B (3), 4 RBI, RS, BB, K, CS (1)
The 18-year-old right-handed bat hit very well in his debut 2022 season but has yet to repeat that in 2023. Perhaps today is the start of something good.
CF Geyber Blanco3-for-5, 2 2B (11), 2 RBI, K
I pay close attention when 17-year-olds start raking in their debut season. So far, Blanco is doing that: .333/.405/.480 with 11 doubles in 84 plate appearances. He was just signed back in February.
DH Abrahan Ramirez1-for-2, 2 BB, K
The 18-year-old left-handed bat is hitting .314/.442/.446 in 45 games at this level going back to last season.
RF Luis Puello1-for-3, 2B (2), 2 RS, 2 BB, K
1B Johan Ferreira1-for-3, HR (1), 2 RBI, 3 RS, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (5)
Ferreira is already 20 years old. This is his first professional home run!

RHP Daniel Guerrero3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K
RHP Mariano Salomon (W, 2-1): 4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
He is 20 years old but this is his first professional season. Salomon has a 40/6 K/BB ratio over 29.1 innings.
LHP Luis Urbano1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
