Yankees MILB 5/15: Jace Avina Continues His Surge

Top 30 Prospects

Injury Log

Notes:

A few stat lines from former prospects. Stats are through Thursday:

Jesus Rodriguez, sent to the Giants as part of the Camilo Doval deal, was recently called up. He is 6-for-24 with a home run while playing six games at catcher and one in right field. The Yankees played Rodriguez all over the field in the minors, but never in right field, though he did play 16 games there during the 2023-2024 Venezuelan Winter League.

TJ Rumfield started hot, stumbled for a while, but is hitting again. It adds up to an impressive .280/.349/.452 (116 OPS+) line in 175 plate appearances. He has launched six home runs while driving home 25.  “Is he benefiting from playing in Colorado?”  The answer is “Yes,” but he hasn’t been a failure on the road (.270/.350/.382).

After an encouraging (but hardly “good”) rookie campaign, the Marlins have shipped Agustin Ramirez to the minors. In 31 MLB games, he hit .230/.318/.345 with a pair of home runs. Jared Serna, acquired in the same trade, has been awful in Triple-A (.214/.289/.311). After looking like a decent long-term offensive prospect in the Yankees’ system, he has done nothing for the Marlins.

Hudson Valley (18-18) (Lost to Frederick, 4-3)

SS Kaeden Kent2-for-4, R, K
Kent was in a little slump, so it is nice to see a multi-hit effort. It’s his 15th multi-hit game this season (34 games).
C Eric Genther: 1-for-4
DH Kyle West: 1-for-3, HR (5), RBI, R, BB, K
West is hitting better after a bad slump crushed his triple slash. He is 9-for-25 in his last six games.

6.98 ERA (29.2 IP, 33 H, 27 R, 23 ER, 5 HR, 12 BB, 36 K).  Your reminder that this is his debut season, and they placed him in High-A. That has come with some growing pains, but he does have three 8-strikeout efforts.
RHP Brandon Decker1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Hansel Rincon1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

LF Luis Durango2-for-3, R, SAC
RF Gabriel Lara0-for-3, R, BB, 2 K

RHP Mac Heuer2.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, HR
Heuer hit 98.5 MPH with his 4-seam fastball and averaged 93.6 MPH with his cutter. Plenty of talent in his arm. They will need to harness it.
RHP Jose M. Martinez: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
RHP Jordarlin Mendoza2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
Speaking of a talented arm that needs to be harnessed. Mendoza throws 99 MPH sinkers. He doesn’t know where they are going, though.

1B Richard Matic2-for-5, 2B (4), R, K
Matic has reached base safely in all ten of his games.
RF Wilberson De Pena2-for-5, R, SB (4), CS (3), K
Having your average (.405) go down after a 2-for-5 day is a sign you are doing well.
C Queni Pineda1-for-4, R, BB, 2 K
3B Leni Done0-for-4, 3 K
CF Jose Castro2-for-3, 2 RBI, R, 3 SB (11), BB, K
Castro leads the FCL in stolen bases. He had two in his first six games and nine in his last four games.
   PR-CF Isael Arias: 0-for-0, R
Is it safe to assume Castro was injured?  Teams don’t typically pinch-run for players with three stolen bases.
