Yankees MILB 7/18: Jasson Dominguez Stays Hot

The Yankees have promoted a few players. Firstly, C/1B Ben Rice is on his way to Somerset. Rice just completed a rehab stint in Tampa. Earlier this season, he was a beast for Hudson Valley. He hit .341/.559/.523 in 68 plate appearances and was likely in line for an early promotion to Somerset at that point. Rice is a 24-year-old left-handed bat.

The Yankees promoted LHP Brock Selvidge from Tampa to Hudson Valley. Only 20 years old, Selvidge pitched to a 3.38 ERA (2.75 FIP) over 77.1 innings for Tampa. His rates across the board are impressive: 28% K, 6.5% BB, and 52% GB. He was their 21st-round pick in 2021 and is not Rule 5 eligible until after 2025. Selvidge is on the same flight (bus?) as RHP Shane Gray, who will also make his way to Hudson Valley. Gray, a reliever, pitched to a 4.26 ERA (4.32 FIP) over 38 innings with a 28.7% K and 9.1% BB. The 23-year-old was chosen in the 16th round of the 2022 draft.

We will probably see more promotions in the coming days ahead.

According to Chris Kirschner on Twitter, the Yankees have signed 17 of their 18 draft picks. The lone holdout is 4th round pick Roc Riggio, who has some leverage as a draft-eligible sophomore.

Serna has four home runs and 13 RBI in his last four games. Overall, he is hitting .290 with 18 doubles, 1 triple, 18 HR, 64 RBI, and 62 runs scored. An incredible season.

Rodriguez has three multi-hit games in his last four games played. He is up to .294 and has hit for average in his entire short career (tonight was his 163rd career game). He is only 21 and won’t turn 22 until next April.

Escanio only had three hits all month entering tonight. Baseball! Anyway, reaching base five times in a game is always a special night.

Yankees MILB 7/16: Jasson Dominguez: Heating Up

Veteran RHP Matt Bowman has opted out of his minor league deal. The Yankees have 72 hours to add him to the MLB roster or lose him. The 32-year-old has a 3.29 ERA in 38.1 innings for Scranton with a 36/18 K/BB. He hasn’t pitched in MLB since 2019.

OF Anthony Hall, who is hitting .271/.387/.452 (131 wRC+) for Tampa, is currently on the injured list (was placed there on 7/5). Hall, who only received one plate appearance before going down to injury in 2022, was likely in line for a promotion.

The Yankees have recalled IF Oswald Peraza. You likely have read about his slump (I highlighted it myself) and his less-than-ideal metrics. While that isn’t meaningless, I think that Peraza has established that he can play in Triple-A over the last two seasons. If you don’t give him a chance now, when are you going to give him one?

The 28.1% K has to come down – that’s the one thing in his profile that gives you a little pause. For what it is worth, in the small Triple-A sample size, it sits at 21.9%.

What do I think about the Yankees draft?

I don’t pretend to be something I am not. I don’t follow much college baseball and I sure as heck don’t pay attention to high school baseball – so how much can I really know?

It seems like a bit of a typical draft – perhaps a little more “meh” than some recent ones.  They will pay George Lombard Jr. an over-slot bonus, pay players without much leverage well below their slot, and mix in some of the kids they drafted beyond the 10th round. I will read up more on them as they make their debuts. Until then, I grade their draft somewhere between a 20 and an 80 on the 20-80 scale.

You are going to start to see Top 100 lists come out. As you get lower on those lists, remember that publications are choosing between several players for the last several slots. Is there a major difference between #97 and #105? Probably not – but it still is beneficial to find yourself on the list.

Baseball America had a nice write-up on Chase Hampton as one of their “Notable Risers.”  He went from unraked to 61st. Meanwhile, Prospects Live! didn’t rank him at all (and only ranked two Yankees – Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones).

The Yankees signed veteran cornerman Jake Lamb to a minor league deal. Lamb, who has experience playing all four corner positions, hit .216/.259/.353 with two home runs in 18 games for the Angels earlier this season. In 723 career games, he has a .235/.326/.427 (97 OPS+) line with 96 home runs. Most of the good stuff was compiled back in 2016-2017 when he hit 59 home runs and drove in 196 runs in 300 games for Arizona.

Yankees MILB 6/25: Trey Sweeney’s Big Day

News:

I wrote briefly about the Yankees potentially blowing up the draft this year yesterday.

As for the draft itself, it all begins on July 9th. I question a lot of things that MLB does, but I think they did the right thing when they moved the draft to be part of the All-Star Game festivities. It is very hard for baseball to create a buzz around the draft. Unlike the NBA and NFL, you won’t see these players right away. The NHL is somewhat similar to baseball as there is a minor league system, but we see more teenagers in the NHL than we do in MLB. This past season, 11 teenagers played at least one NHL game.

Anyway, I am not really an MLB draft expert. I read about who the Yankees choose to get as informed as possible before they show up in my daily reports. If you want people who follow the draft more closely than I do on Twitter, you can look at Virginia Yankee or Bobby Milone.  Last year, Bobby correctly predicted the Spencer Jones pick.

Dominguez has 53 walks this season, putting him in the top ten in all of MILB and second in all of Double-A. It’s something, as we await for the rest of his game to catch up.

Yankees MILB 6/23: Everson Pereira Returns with a Bang

News:

RHP Clayton Beeter was promoted to the Scranton Railriders today. Beeter is the 9th-ranked prospect in the system (Pipeline).

In 19 starts for Somerset between 2022-2023, Beeter compiled a 2.09 ERA in 86 innings with a 117/44 K/BB ratio. I will note that his K% for Somerset has fallen from 39.4% last year to 29.7% this year.

He was acquired last season from the Los Angeles Dodgers for OF Joey Gallo.

Down in Somerset, OF Everson Pereira is finally back after an extended absence due to who knows what. Tonight was his first game since May 30th, but he was never placed on the Injured List.

LHP Carlos Rodon started his rehab stint in Somerset tonight.

IF Caleb Durbin, who is off to an impressive start in his first season with the Yankees’ organization, was placed on the injured list today for Somerset. Between Hudson Valley and Somerset, Durbin is hitting .292/.394/.400 in 216 plate appearances with 29 stolen bases in 33 attempts. He has struck out in only 6.9% of his plate appearances, which is second in all of MILB (if I don’t include players in the DSL). Only Cesar Prieto (Double-A, BAL) has a lower rate (6.8%).

Durbin was part of the package (along with RHP Indigo Diaz) that the Yankees acquired from the Braves for LHP Lucas Luetge this past winter. The Braves designated Luetge for assignment back in May and outrighted him down to Triple-A once he cleared waivers.
