Yankees MILB 8/27: Spencer Jones: 2 Hits in Somerset Debut

News:

SS George Lombard Jr., 1B/3B Dylan Jasso, and OF Jackson Castillo were all moved up to Low-A Tampa after the FCL season concluded yesterday. All three were in today’s lineup.

Lombard (18) was the Yankees’ first-round pick in the 2023 draft while Jasso (20-year-old right-handed bat) and Castillo (20-year-old left-handed bat) both were signed as undrafted free agents after the draft.

“Is the Lombard promotion aggressive for the Yankees?” That question is impossible to answer. The most recent direct comparison (Anthony Volpe, 2019) played under a different system. He never played in the GCL (now FCL), instead going straight to short-season Pulaski after being drafted. We’ll never know what the exact plans for him were because he came down with an illness that wiped out his season after 34 games.

Jasso and Castillo are college kids – one should never be surprised to see college bats making their way to a full-season league quickly. Many start there.

Dominguez is 11-for-23 (.478/1.023 OPS) since his promotion with two doubles, one triple, and ten runs batted in. What, no home runs? He is right in the middle of the organization’s RBI title race, as he is up to 76 (Andres Chaparro leads with 77. Jared Serna also has 76). His triple slash now sits at .266/.376/.426. Remember when he was hitting under .200? It really wasn’t all that long ago. Yeah, a 20-year-old doing this in the upper minors deserves a ranking in the 80s, Pipeline.

Wells has eight doubles, five home runs, and 19 RBI in 23 August games. He is also in the middle of the RBI race, as he is up to 72 in 94 games.

I have nothing important to report.

Quick commentary: Anyone who follows the minors knows that Triple-A is an offensive haven. It used to be that the PCL was crazy while the International League played more fairly. Nowadays, both leagues are offense-first (the PCL (teams average 6.26 R/G) is still the king of offense, as the International League is at 5.57). This doesn’t mean you disqualify kids just because they hit well in an offensive league. Keep it in mind when you look at boxscores, but don’t dismiss what you are looking at based on that alone.

Scranton (57-60; 23-20 in the second half) (Destroyed Worcester, 13-1)

CF Estevan Florial: 2-for-5, 2 RS, BB, 2 K

Obviously, we love the power – but it is nice to see Pereira reach base in other ways today and use his wheels. Pereira is not likely a big stolen base guy in the majors, but he should reach double digits with a chance to reach the 20 mark. He is at .312/.386/.551 in 158 PA at this level.

Wells’ first career multi-HR game and he sets a new personal best for RBI in a game. Through Friday, he was hitting .244/.340/.372 at this level. Now, two days later, he is hitting .260/.351/.479 in 111 PA at this level. Overall, he has 16 homers and 70 runs batted in 88 games this season.

Dominguez, who compiles his first career 3-double game, has two 4-hit games in his last three games played. He is up to .254/.367/.414 (.781 OPS) in 507 PA (19 doubles, 2 triples, 15 HR, 66 RBI, 82 R, 77 BB (15.2%), 130 K (25.6%), 37-for-44 SB (84.1%)). It is fun to do “what has he done lately?” stats – but his full season is now speaking for itself.  By the way, one way to develop your game is by playing it. Dominguez has 1,037 plate appearances over the last two seasons. Does he deserve to play in Scranton for a few weeks? I think so – maybe they will get him there before the end of August.

SS Alexander Vargas: 1-for-4, SF, RBI, RS, K

This qualifies as a rather productive night. Peraza is hitting .262/.350/.477 in 294 PA (9 doubles, 2 triples, 14 HR, 36 RBI, 45 R, 28 BB (9.5%), 54 K (18.4%), 15-for-19 SB). Peraza has 754 career plate appearances in Triple-A. That is criminal if you truly believe in a prospect – and, if you don’t, it is criminal that you didn’t take advantage of his value. 
C Austin Wells: 2-for-6, 2B (9), HR (2), 3 RBI, RS, 4 K
I would rather not see the four strikeouts, but the power is nice. He is hitting .250/.340/.413 in 106 PA at this level and .237/.329/.430 in 389 PA overall (23 doubles, 14 HR, 63 RBI, 39 R, 43 BB (11.1%), 91 K (23.4%), 7-for-7 SB). 
LF Everson Pereira: 2-for-4, 2 HR (8), 2 RBI, 3 RS, BB, K
Pereira’s second 2-HR game in 2023. Overall, between here and Somerset, he is hitting .302/.370/.551 in 338 PA (17 doubles, 2 triples, 18 HR, 64 RBI, 50 R, 30 BB (8.9%), 97 K (28.7%), 10-for-12 SB). For Scranton, he is hitting .316/.379/.559 with eight homers and 33 RBI. I will tell anyone who listens that there are good things in his profile and not-so-ideal things in his profile. It doesn’t matter – let him get some well-deserved reps against big-league pitching. Nobody is asking him to be a savior at this point.

Yes, I saw the quotes from OF Ben Ruta, a former Yankees farmhand who is exposing some of the inner workings down on the farm.

I am not someone who is going to go crazy over a former prospect lashing out. While I don’t think he is lying, there could be some exaggeration for effect. I would love to hear more stories from prospects who played in the system around the same timeframe to verify the claims.

Back in the old days, we would never just take one person’s word for it. You would interview multiple people to verify the claims being made. That is all I am asking for.

Ruta had a couple of solid seasons in the Yankees system but eventually faded away. He did play for the Padres’ system in 2021, hitting .178 in 76 games before being released. No word on who is blamed for that.

The Yankees have released three prospects. Outfielders Anthony Garcia and Aldenis Sanchez are no longer members of the Hudson Valley Renegades, while RHP Blas Castano is gone from the Somerset Patriots. Additionally, the Yankees have designated RHP Deivi Garcia for assignment. Because we are beyond the trade deadline, Garcia is not eligible to be traded. If he clears waivers, he can be outrighted to the minors or released.

Anthony Garcia showed off his three outcome chops in 2022, as he hit .195/.372/.369 (121 wRC+) over 384 PA with 15 home runs. This season, in his first taste of High-A, his walk rate dropped from 21.6% to 15.1%. His wRC+ dropped to 85.

Sanchez, acquired for Mike Ford, is a speedy outfielder who hasn’t been able to develop the hit tool. He is hitting only .225/.300/.352 (79 wRC+) with 14 stolen bases.

Castano was ranked as the Yankees’ #26 prospect by Fangraphs prior to 2023. For Somerset this season, he pitched to a 4.76 ERA (4.66 FIP) over 45.1 innings with a 12.5% BB and 21% K. The walk rate is the big thing in this profile, as he was known for his ability to throw strikes in the lower minors.

The Yankees tried to convert Deivi Garcia to a full-time reliever in 2023, and it hasn’t gone well. Once regarded as one of the top pitching prospects in the system, he fell off a few years ago with plenty of rumors as to why.

There are so many promotions today that I could write an entire entry on them alone. I won’t dig into that deeply up here – you will see blurbs below as they make their debuts at new levels.

.330/.375/.553 in 112 PA at this level. He has 30 strikeouts (26.8%). To me, it comes down to this: Are you willing to accept the warts in his game in exchange for him getting some MLB playing time? Eventually, MLB pitchers will find the areas to exploit. That happens to the best of the best, after all. Player development is a balancing act. My opinion is clear: Get him some playing time in 2023, whether that is a week from now or a few weeks from now.

He is the type who can be selected and stick.

Given that he is in Somerset now, it is a near certainty that he will be protected in this winter’s Rule 5.

The Yankees have released a pair of veteran relievers.

RHP Michael Feliz, signed on May 18th, was released from his contract. He reportedly will sign with a team in Japan. The veteran pitched to a decent 3.38 ERA in only 13.1 innings with a 15/5 K/BB.
LHP D.J. Snelten was also cut. Snelten, who hadn’t pitched since making 20 starts with the Chicago Dogs (Independent) in 2019, was an interesting story but he simply did not perform. He compiled a 7.50 ERA in 30 games with Scranton, with a 48/42 K/BB over 36 innings.

RHP Bailey Dees was promoted from Hudson Valley to Somerset today, reuniting with former bullpen mate Danny Watson to form a towering duo. Dees, who stands 6’8″, pitched to a 1.74 ERA and 59/15 K/BB ratio over 41.1 innings. He was the Yankees’ 18th-round pick in the 2021 draft out of Penn State.

Wells, the Yankees’ first-round pick in the 2020 COVID draft, hit .248/.343/.460 in 113 Double-A games with 22 doubles, 1 triple, 23 HR, and 93 RBI. Whether he can stick behind the plate is still a matter of debate.

A new career best (23 HR in 71 games this year; 22 in 111 games last year). Hardman hits his bombs in bunches. He hit home runs in three straight games in early June and had a stretch where he hit six home runs in six games (including three in one game). While he has enough pop to make it to the big leagues, it is the strikeouts that are a problem: 101 in 302 PA (33.4%).

You are looking at a legit swingman type of prospect here who can probably start, pitch in the middle innings, and even give you some late-inning production. You are probably thinking about guys like Ramiro Mendoza or Alfredo Aceves, etc.

DSL Bombers (15-17) (Destroyed DSL Miami, 12-1. Talk about a bunch of baserunners: They compiled 13 hits and 14 walks while Miami commited three errors. This game had real 28-1 DSL potential. Trust me, stuff like that has happened before at this level!)
