News:

LHP Clay Aguilar stayed in Double-A for 24 hours or so. He was promoted to Scranton today.

The Rule 5 eligible 24-year-old pitched to a 2.25 ERA (3.30 FIP) over 44 innings down in Hudson Valley with a 34.1% K and 13% BB. He missed the entire 2022 season.

Beeter sets a new personal best for strikeouts in a game. He owns a 5.40 ERA in 60 innings at this level (57 H, 37 R, 36 ER, 13 HR, 37 BB, 75 K). Overall, he owns a 151/68 K/BB over 120.2 IP. Unless they use him in a deal, Beeter is going to be protected from the Rule 5 draft this winter.  Tonight, he featured two pitches in his 100-pitch effort: 49 sliders + 48 4-seam fastballs (three changeups).

Cohen’s Double-A debut. He pitched to a 3.86 ERA in 49 IP between Tampa and Hudson Valley (40 H, 23 R, 21 ER, 5 HR, 24 BB, 64 K)

Hudson Valley (70-62; 31-35 in the second half)  (Defeated Jersey Shore, 6-2. The series is tied at 1-1. The decisive third game is tomorrow night)

Serna was on his way to a 20/20/20 (doubles/HR/SB) season, but couldn’t put a ball over the fence after his promotion here. That said, he wasn’t overmatched here either. The full package is a kid who should break into Double-A at some point in 2024.

LF Jesus Rodriguez: 2-for-3, RS, BB, K, SB (1)
Rodriguez is 4-for-7 in two playoff games. When you combine that with his regular season performance, he is hitting .315. I keep talking about this kid because I think performance still should matter. He has hit all season long at a young age while being asked to play four positions (C/1B/3B/LF). I simply cannot ignore that regardless of the Top 30 lists.

Rodriguez has the talent to move quickly. He is still only 21 years old (if it feels he has been around forever, he has been – since he debuted in 2019). He just has to start putting the puzzle together.

Yankees MILB 7/30: Agustin Ramirez Collects 3 Hits

News:

There hasn’t been much smoke surrounding the Yankees when it comes to the trade deadline.

There is talk about Gleyber Torres attracting the attention of the Marlins again. Since this is the second year in a row, perhaps they will give up something of real value for him. If I sound lukewarm, it is because I am. I need to see it to believe it.

There isn’t a magic bullet waiting in Triple-A to save this team. I like Oswald Peraza but the Yankees made their feelings known this past week. They aren’t going to use Estevan Florial.  Everson Pereira and Austin Wells are the closest kids they have, but they insist on Wells catching and Pereira needs time. Andres Chaparro is a player who may provide some instant offense but he has defensive limitations. I have yet to see an evaluator who thinks he is playing third base in MLB.

I honestly don’t know what the Yankees will or can do. They have less than 48 hours to show their cards. My guess is that they will show 8-high, for those who know poker.

Scranton (46-53; 12-13 in the second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 11-8. Buffalo scored at will over the weekend)

RF Estevan Florial: 2-for-5, HR (23), 2 RBI, RS, K
.297/.390/.592 in 372 PA (16 doubles, 4 triples, 23 HR, 59 RBI, 63 R, 50 BB (13.4%), 109 K (29.3%), 18-for-28 SB). While he hit only three home runs in July, he finishes the month 22-for-68 (.324) with ten walks and (of course) 24 strikeouts. If it feels like he earns a hit just about every time he makes contact, you aren’t alone. His BABIP numbers continue to be insane. Entering today, his BABIP was .376. His career mark is .365. We are well beyond the point of using a sample size excuse.

Since promotion: .407/.455/.747 in 99 PA (10 doubles, 7 HR, 17 RBI, 18 R, 7 BB, 12 K, 2-for-2 SB). In 22 games at this level, he has multiple hits 12 times. He has failed to reach base in only one game. This isn’t some 23-year-old who is suddenly crushing young pitchers. He is only 21.

Not known for his extreme plate discipline, Familia has four walks in his last two games. That brings his percentage up to 8.06% this season.

1B Omar Martinez: 2-for-5, HR (12), 5 RBI, 2 RS
Martinez finishes off a scorching July with a bang. He drove home four runs in a game three times this month (26 RBI overall) while going 26-for-85 (.306) with five doubles and seven home runs.  This spiked his numbers to .254/.366/.445 in 303 plate appearances with 11 doubles, 12 HR, and 49 RBI.

Hall’s second 3-hit game this season improves his line to .275/.390/.454 in 249 PA with 37 BB (14.9%) and 55 K (22.1%).

Given that Negueis is an impossible-to-fathom 3-for-54 this season, this double was a welcome sight. His BABIP is an unsightly .065. Suffice it to say, an “unlucky” BABIP is nearly 200 points higher than his.

3.40 ERA (39.2 IP, 38 H, 18 R, 15 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 40 K). Selvidge walked 3.59/9 last season. This season, the rate is 1.59/9.

I remain stern in my stance that Wells needs to be moved from this level very soon.

.223/.291/.415 in 103 PA. His 33% K rate is concerning (last season, his rate was 27.7%)

Between here and Hudson Valley, Durbin is 19-for-21 stealing bases. His BB/K ratio is 15/9. His versatility, ability to make contact, and steal some bases (he was 31-for-36 last season) can certainly make him an MLB player.

What looked like a tough night turned into a good one for Vargas. His 2-run single in the top of the 9th gave Hudson Valley the lead.
