Yankees MILB 6/26: Sebastian Keane Tosses 6 Scoreless Innings

News:

LHP Victor Gonzalez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Scranton. He couldn’t decline the outright. He will serve as depth for the remainder of 2024.

RHP Scott Effross will report to Scranton for the remainder of his rehab. Scranton’s game was postponed tonight, so expect him to get into one of tomorrow’s games. It shouldn’t be long before he is activated.

C/3B/OF/Everything Jesus Rodriguez was placed on the injured list for Somerset. Rodriguez is having a big season, hitting .327/.412/.504 with a 156 wRC+. He is the organizational leader in batting average and wRC+ among players in full-season leagues.

C/1B Rafael Flores was promoted from Hudson Valley to replace Rodriguez. The 23-year-old earned the promotion by hitting .285/.403/.466 (145 wRC+) in 233 PA. This was his second season at the level, but he only played four games in the FCL and skipped Low-A.

Former Yankees prospect Armando Alvarez went 3-for-5 in his MLB debut for Oakland. Alvarez is a story you root for: He is 29 years old with 700 minor league games. He was with the Yankees from 2016 to 2022 after being drafted in the 17th round out of Eastern Kentucky. When looking at Baseball Reference, he is the 8th player from Eastern Kentucky to make MLB—his big night already jumped him to 3rd on the bWAR list. Alvarez is why minor league free agency exists. It allows him to shop his services around. He landed in Oakland after spending one season in the Giants organization. While he never appeared in a game for the Yankees, he should be considered a developmental/scouting success for the organization.

Scranton (43-32)

Their game against Worcester was postponed.  They will try a Thursday doubleheader.

Somerset (34-36) (Scored four runs in the first inning and that was enough in a 4-3 win over Richmond)

CF Spencer Jones0-for-4, 4 K
Jones is hitting better but the strikeouts remain at a less-than-ideal rate (35.2%). In 78 PA after his promotion last season, he struck out at a 28.2% rate.
SS Ben Cowles1-for-4, RS, SB (13)
Cowles now has a 7-game hitting streak. His June numbers are looking better (.256/.326/.378).
DH Tyler Hardman0-for-4, 3 K
1B Rafael Flores1-for-3, RS, BB, K
A nice Double-A debut for Flores.
C J.C. Escarra0-for-3, RS, BB
2B Anthony Seigler1-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, BB
Seigler has 3 multi-RBI games in his last five games played.  He is hitting .201/.296/.374 in 203 PA. He hasn’t hit for average in June (.196) but is reaching base and showing some pop (.328 OBP/.446 SLG). I am not trying to convince you that he is a prospect again. I am simply highlighting a solid stretch of games.
RF Jared Wegner1-for-3, 2B (10), 2 RBI
Wegner has 6 doubles in his last 8 games (4 in his first 42 games). Baseball randomness is fascinating.
LF Aaron Palensky1-for-3, K
3B Max Burt0-for-3, K

LHP Brock Selvidge6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Selvidge struck out the final two batters he faced. Season: 3.75 ERA in 74.1 IP (64 H, 40 R, 31 ER, 4 HR, 36 BB, 72 K). The walks are on the high side (he has already walked more batters this year than last year (35 in 127.2 IP), but he keeps the ball in the ballpark (11 HR allowed in 248.1 career innings).
RHP Jesus Liranzo1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Danny Watson1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
A much-needed clean inning for Watson.
RHP Kevin Stevens (S, 3): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
2.42 ERA (26 IP, 21 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 42 K). You know what? Minor league stats aren’t everything, but these stats still stand out.

Hudson Valley (36-34) (Shut down Wilmington, 5-0. The game was called in the 8th inning due to rain)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-4, 2B (11), RS, K
Riggio has 6 extra-base hits in his last 9 games (13 in his first 43 games). On June 14th, he owned a .327 SLG. It is now .385.
SS Jared Serna2-for-4, HR (12), 2 RBI, 2 RS
Serna is putting that 0-for-20 in his rearview mirror. He is hitting .265/.361/.481 in 305 PA (20 doubles, 12 HR, 52 RBI, 47 R, 11.8% BB, 17.7% K). He continues to be impressively productive. As for a promotion, he played 107 games for Tampa before getting to Hudson Valley. He has played 94 games at this level. I don’t think it is far off.
CF Jace Avina1-for-3, 2B (20), RS, HBP
Avina has a 5-game hitting streak that features four extra-base hits (3 doubles, 1 home run). After solid efforts in April and May, he has slumped in June. Like Serna, perhaps he is breaking out of it.
C Omar Martinez1-for-4, 2 RBI, K
Martinez is 7-for-24 (.292) with a homer and 4 RBI in his last 6 games.
LF Garrett Martin1-for-4, 3B (2), K
3B Josh Moylan1-for-3, RS, BB
Moylan has a 5-game hitting streak (7-for-18, 1 double, 2 HR).
RF Cole Gabrielson0-for-1, SB (7), CS (3), HBP, BB
1B Kiko Romero1-for-3, 2B (7), RBI, 2 K
DH Beau Brewer1-for-3, K

RHP Sebastian Keane: (W, 6-5)  6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
4.55 ERA (63.1 IP, 59 H, 33 R, 32 ER, 6 HR, 29 BB, 60 K). Keane is pitching as expected, given this is his first full season of starting as a professional. I will note that, for the most part, he has kept his team in the game even on days he struggles.
RHP Eric Reyzelman1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
The zeroes keep coming for Reyzelman (8 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 14 K). Health is his only concern. He has the ability to move fast up the chain.
RHP Huey Morrill0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Tampa (26-44) (Lost a shootout to Fort Myers, 11-9)

SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-4, 2B (12), RBI, RS, SB (21), CS (2), BB
Lombard Jr. has reached base 9 times in his last three games (5-for-12, 2 doubles, 4 BB). Furthermore, in his last 10 games, he is 12-for-38 (.316) with 4 doubles, a homer, 6 walks, and a 6-for-7 SB rate. I won’t call this his breaking-out party, but one of the fascinating (often annoying) aspects of following prospects is the sudden breakout party. You never know when (or if) it will happen.
DH Enmanuel Tejeda1-for-5, RS, SB (18)
2B Roderick Arias1-for-4, 3B (7), RBI, SB (19), CS (9), BB, K
His raw talent continues to carry him (10 doubles, 7 triples, 6 HR, 43 RBI in 67 games) while the rest of his game tries to develop (110 strikeouts in 308 PA).
1B Dylan Jasso1-for-5, RBI, 2 RS, 3 K
CF Jackson Castillo: 1-for-4, RS, SB (10), BB, K
The 21-year-old has played well while occupying center field (42 starts in 2024). If he is a true center fielder, he has prospect value.
3B Hans Montero1-for-4, RBI, RS, SB (5), HBP, 3 K
RF Willy Montero0-for-4, 2 K
LF Coby Morales2-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, 4 SB (19), K
I have pointed this out before, but it is worth repeating: Morales stole one base in college (plus one in a college summer league). Low-A baseball can be crazy, but 19 stolen bases (and four in one night) for Coby Morales? That goes beyond crazy.
C Tomas Frick0-for-3, BB, K

RHP Bryce Warrecker3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
His development will be a process. Not only is he inexperienced, he stands 6’8″. Don’t expect him to fly through the system.
RHP Jordy Luciano1.1 IP, 0 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
RHP Steven Fulgencio2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Montana Semmel: (L, 4-4)  1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

Yankees MILB 5/30: Yoendrys Gomez Shines

News:

RHP Cody Poteet will start for Scranton on Saturday and will (reportedly) be the “first man up” in the Yankees’ attempt to replace Clarke Schmidt.

RHP Cody Morris, called up today, can be an option for the next start.

Scranton (34-20) (Beat up Toledo again, 9-2)

2B Jorbit Vivas0-for-4, RS, CS (2), 2 BB
DH Oswald Peraza0-for-5, 3 K
Eek.
1B T.J. Rumfield2-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
Back-to-back multi-hit efforts as he attempts to break out of his little slump.
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-5, HR (5), 3 RBI, RS, K
If you are going to go 1-for-5, make the “1” count!
3B Luis Torrens1-for-5, RS
LF Oscar Gonzalez3-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, RS, HBP
I remain happy that the depth in the 2024 organization includes Gonzalez, who I think can contribute if needed (let’s hope not)
SS Jeter Downs: 1-for-4, RS, BB, 3 K
RF Greg Allen: 3-for-4, 3B (1), 3 RBI, RS, BB
Like Gonzalez, Allen is nice depth to have around.
CF Brandon Lockridge0-for-4, RBI, BB, K

RHP Yoendrys Gomez: (W, 1-2)  5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
It was a brilliant performance by Gomez, who could find himself in the mix for more MLB innings. Season: 3.06 ERA (32.1 IP, 21 H, 12 R, 11 ER, 19 BB, 39 K)
LHP Oddanier Mosqueda2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Alex Mauricio: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
1.07 ERA (25.1 IP, 19 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 28 K). I believe that an MLB opportunity will come for Mauricio. Even if it isn’t with the Yankees (it can be!), I think there’s a good shot he’ll stick somewhere.
RHP Yerry De Los Santos0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (23-25) (Lost to Bowie, 7-2, in 12 innings)

CF Spencer Jones0-for-4, HBP, 2 K
Jones increases his on-base streak to 13. That is encouraging but he isn’t hot. Perhaps it’s the start of something bigger…
DH Agustin Ramirez0-for-5, K
Ramirez is at .265 with a .919 OPS. He is in a minor 3-for-22 slide.
1B Ben Rice0-for-4, BB, K
SS Ben Cowles1-for-5, K
C J.C. Escarra0-for-5, 2 K
LF Elijah Dunham1-for-5, RS, SB (6), 3 K
3B Jordan Groshans2-for-5, SB (1), K
RF Jared Wegner0-for-3, BB, 3 K
2B Anthony Seigler1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS
The prospect nerd in me still gets excited when I see good things from Seigler. Without the injuries, who knows where he would be today? That’s just the brutal part of sports.

RHP Bailey Dees7.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
The second run scored after he left a game (on a 2-out strikeout/wild pitch. So stupid). Anyway, brilliant performance for Dees (longest outing of his career). Season: 3.71 ERA (51 IP, 45 H, 23 R, 22 ER, 5 HR, 19 BB, 50 K). This is his 9th straight start where he allowed three runs or fewer.
RHP Jack Neely2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K
1.40 ERA (25.2 IP, 16 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 40 K).  I get that a prospect doesn’t need to stay in Triple-A for long (if at all), but I think it is time to get him there to prep him for his MLB debut.
RHP Luis Velasquez: (L, 1-2): 1.1 IP, 1 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Carlos Gomez0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (23-22) (Mauled Aberdeen, 11-1)

2B Roc Riggio: 1-for-2, 3B (3), 3 RS, 2 BB
.210/.358/.361 in 148 PA (6 doubles, 3 triples, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 24 R, 16.9% BB, 18.2% K). If he reaches his potential, I see him as a pain-in-the-butt table setter type. So far, he hasn’t hit for average in his brief professional career.
SS Jared Serna1-for-4, 2 RBI, RS, HBP, K
9 RBI in his last two games and 24 RBI in 23 May games.
LF Jace Avina3-for-4, 2B (15), SF, 2 RBI, RS
Avina has five 3-hit games and is hitting .309/.391/.525 in 161 PA.
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-3, 2 BB
Position update: C: 19 games (16 starts); 2B: 3 starts; 3B: 13 games (12 starts); LF: 8 starts. While he hasn’t played there in 2024, he made 28 starts at first base in 2023.
DH Tyler Hardman1-for-4, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K
C Omar Martinez1-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K
1B Rafael Flores: 2-for-4, 2 2B (14), 2 RS, BB
Flores has four doubles in his last four games (9 doubles in May). He is hitting .281/.390/.456 in 136 PA (14.7% BB, 22.8% K). He is a C/1B type and is someone to pay attention to.
RF Garrett Martin2-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (6), HBP, 2 K
Martin launches his first professional homer. Congrats!
CF Cole Gabrielson0-for-4, RS, SB (4), BB, 3 K

RHP Sebastian Keane: (W, 4-3) 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K
4.60 ERA (43 IP, 42 H, 22 R, 22 ER, 3 HR, 21 BB, 41 K). He has some impressive starts mixed with starts where he has struggled a bit. All a part of the learning curve.
RHP Trent Sellers2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
RHP Matt Keating1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
2.73 ERA (29.2 IP, 18 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 2 HR, 11 BB, 31 K). The Yankees have so many legit (in my opinion) relief prospects that some can get lost in the shuffle – Keating is under the radar.

Tampa (18-30) (Lost to Palm Beach, 4-3)

SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-3, RBI, RS, 2 SB (12), 2 BB, K
.219/.373/.272 in 142 PA. He is 12-for-13 SB. As for the power, he’s 18 years old. He’ll likely grow into some pop.
LF Jackson Castillo0-for-4, BB, K
.240/.383/.430 in 128 PA with equal 19.5% BB and K rates.
1B Dylan Jasso0-for-4, BB, 2 K
2B Hans Montero0-for-3, BB, 2 K
CF Willy Montero1-for-4, RBI
RF Coby Morales0-for-4, K
DH Tomas Frick1-for-3, 2 RS, BB
3B Brenny Escanio2-for-4, SB (3)
C Edinson Duran1-for-4, 2 K

RHP Josh Grosz4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 1 K
He is back at the level where he belongs. To his credit, he settled in after allowing three quick runs in the first.
RHP Aaron Nixon2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
2.96 ERA (27.1 IP, 20 H, 13 R, 9 ER, 0 HR, 20 BB, 29 K). He is generating ground balls and has a decent K rate. The walks? Something he needs to work on.
RHP Ocean Gabonia (L, 0-2): 1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

FCL (12-7) (Defeated the Tigers, 9-5)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-4, RS, SB (4), BB, K
7-game hitting streak.
LF Christopher Familia4-for-5, RBI, RS
It shouldn’t be long before they declare his rehab over and his assignment to (I assume) Hudson Valley.
1B Josue Gonzalez2-for-5, 2 RS, SB (3), 2 K
3B Abrahan Ramirez3-for-4, 2 2B (3), RBI, 2 RS, BB
17-for-48 (.354/.483/.542)
SS Juan Matheus3-for-5, HR (2), 4 RBI, 2 RS
.263/.435/.460 in 283 career PA (6 HR, 48 RBI, 52 R)

RHP Bryce Warrecker3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR
9 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 12 K
RHP Sabier Marte (W, 3-0): 4.2 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

Yankees MILB 5/17: Sebastian Keane’s Big Effort

News:

I have nothing to offer you.

Scranton (28-13) (Lost a pitcher’s duel to Worcester, 9-8. How did these two teams play a 1-0 game earlier this week?)

2B Caleb Durbin1-for-5, RBI, RS, SB (20)
Durbin has 56 stolen bases in 111 games since joining the organization.
CF Everson Pereira2-for-5, 2B (8), RBI, RS, K
.261/.341/.516 in 176 PA.
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-5, RBI, RS
Rumfield has a 6-game hitting streak.
DH Carlos Narvaez0-for-5, 2 K
LF Oscar Gonzalez3-for-4, 2B (4), 3B (1), 2 RS, BB
Gonzalez came up with a runner on second and two outs in the 9th, giving himself a shot at a dramatic cycle. It wasn’t meant to be.
RF Jose Rojas2-for-3, RBI, RS, BB
3B Jeter Downs0-for-2, 2 SF, 2 RBI
Productive Outs!
C Luis Torrens: 3-for-4, 2B (5), RBI, RS

LHP Anthony Misiewicz1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Somerset (18-18) (Defeated Portland, 9-4)

DH Spencer Jones1-for-4, RS, SB (8), K
3B DJ LeMahieu1-for-2
Hopefully, he comes out of this feeling healthy.
   2B Anthony Seigler0-for-2, RS, SB (5), BB
C Ben Rice0-for-4, K
Rice is down to .238/.365/.454 in 157 PA. He is only 10-for-49 in May with a .286 SLG, his calling card. Everyone goes through slumps!
SS Ben Cowles2-for-4, 2 2B (13), RBI, 2 RS, BB
.331/.410/.545 in 144 PA (13 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR, 22 RBI, 21 R, 11.8% BB, 15.3% K, 5-for-5 SB). He is floating under the radar a bit, but what a start to 2024.
CF Grant Richardson2-for-5, 2B (11), HR (3), 3 RBI, 2 RS, K
Speaking of under-the-radar, Richardson is at .294/.348/.490 (11 doubles, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 16 R, 6.3% BB, 25% K). Yeah, Richardson is a bit of a free-swinging type.
1B J.C. Escarra2-for-4, RBI, RS
2B-3B Jordan Groshans1-for-3, RS, HBP
RF Elijah Dunham2-for-2, RS, SB (3), 2 BB
.273/.391/.468 in 92 PA. Dunham is 9-for-24 (.375/.531/.458) in May. He conquered this level in 2022, but struggled in Scranton in 2023.
LF Jared Wegner1-for-4, RBI, K

RHP Zach Messinger: (W, 2-2) 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
3.83 ERA (44.2 IP, 32 H, 26 R, 19 ER, 4 HR, 15 BB, 48 K). Last 4 starts: 2.08 ERA (21.2 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 HR, 7 BB, 21 K). Is he figuring things out?
LHP Ryan Anderson1.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Colby White0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

  PR-DH Kyle Battle0-for-0
1B Rafael Flores: 1-for-2, RBI, RS, 2 BB, K
Flores is now 11-for-28 with 8 RBI in May. He plays 1B/C.
3B Kiko Romero: 1-for-2, HR (4), 3 RBI, 2 RS, SB (4), 2 BB, K
Romero has a .231 BA with a .851 OPS. He has 10 walks in 9 May games.

RF Cole Gabrielson1-for-4, RBI, 2 K

RHP Sebastian Keane: (W, 2-3) 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Keane needed only 80 pitches to get 21 outs in his longest career outing. Season: 5.06 ERA (32 IP, 32 H, 18 R, 18 ER, 1 HR, 16 BB, 29 K). Remember that he was a relief pitcher in his 2023 debut season. The Yankees drafted him in 2022 out of Northeastern (he was a starter there).
RHP Steven Fulgencio1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Cole Ayers1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Tampa (12-25) (Defeated Bradenton, 5-2)

1B Dylan Jasso0-for-4, RS, K

LF Willy Montero0-for-2, 2 BB, K
2B Hans Montero1-for-4, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
Montero, who is 13-for-44 (.295/.367/.455) since his promotion, hit 5 HR in 53 games during his breakout in the FCL last season.
RF Coby Morales0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
Morales has six walks in his last three games.
C Tomas Frick0-for-4, K
This is the first time he hasn’t reached base this season (17th game)

LHP Allen Facundo: (W, 1-1)  5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K
2.88 ERA (25 IP, 16 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 27 K). A lefty who can touch 96.7 MPH (which he did tonight) is worth watching.
RHP Cade Austin2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2 HR
RHP Montana Semmel: (S, 1) 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Yankees MILB 4/26: Agustin Ramirez’s Big Night

News:

2B Jorbit Vivas, who played in two games since returning from his eye injury, was placed on the 7-day injured list today.

RHP Brian Hendryreceiving buzz in prospect circles, was placed on the 7-day IL today for Hudson Valley. His outing yesterday was short. It is often hard to know if a short outing is a part of a plan or injury. In this case, it was injury.

1B Agustin Ramirez: 3-for-4, 2B (1), HR (8), 2 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
I find it funny that Ramirez had no extra-base hits other than home runs entering tonight. He is hitting .246 with a 1.011 OPS (1 double, 8 HR, 17 RBI, 13 R, 12 BB (15.2%), 13 K (16.5%))

RHP Sebastian Keane: (W, 1-2) 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K
Keane sets a personal best for strikeouts in a game. Season: 5.63 ERA (16 IP, 19 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 19 K). He has two strong starts and two not-so-great starts. They are building up his innings load.
RHP Matt Keating: (S, 2) 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Yankees MILB 4/13: Agustin Ramirez: 6th HR in 7 Games

News:

LHP Josh Maciejewski was designated for assignment by the Yankees. He threw a scoreless inning in his MLB debut a few nights ago.

Unfortunately, this is how baseball works. However, it isn’t all bad for him. If someone claims him, he sticks to a 40-man roster. If not, he goes to Scranton for depth.

The Yankees added Kevin Smith to the MLB roster today. Smith, who replaces the injured Jon Berti, is a .173/.215/.301 career hitter in 333 plate appearances. He is mostly a shortstop/third baseman.

So far this season, the Yankees haven’t shown much faith in Oswaldo Cabrera against LHP. That will need to change as they can’t count on Smith or Jahmai Jones to provide anything offensively. While there is talk that DJ LeMahieu may be back soon, we’ll believe that when he is on the field.

Scranton (9-4) (Defeated Norfolk, 3-0. Even without Jackson Holliday, this lineup is dangerous. Scranton has held them to 12 runs in five games. The Railriders are 5-0 in those games)

CF Brandon Lockridge0-for-3, CS (1), BB, K
DH Caleb Durbin0-for-4
Durbin has run into a little slump (2-for-16).  His strikeout rate has fallen below 5% (4.9).
LF Everson Pereira0-for-4, 4 K
Pereira has been hitting better lately but has an unsightly 36.2% K.
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Power and walks define his offensive game.
1B Jose Rojas1-for-2, 2 BB, K
SS Jeter Downs1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
11-for-34 (.324).
RF Luis Gonzalez1-for-4, 3 K
3B Jordan Groshans0-for-4
2B Josh VanMeter1-for-3, HR (2), RBI, RS, 2 K

RHP Clayton Beeter: (W, 1-0)  5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K
An impressive night for Beeter. The Yankees could have gone with him over Cody Poteet but they likely want Beeter to work down here. There is nothing wrong with that. Once again, he was primarily 4-seam (66%)-slider (28%) while mixing in a handful of changeups. He peaked at 95.7 MPH.
RHP Matt Givin: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
The Yankees signed Givin to a minor league contract last August. This is the 24-year-old’s organizational debut (he never pitched above High-A while in the Marlins organization).
RHP Jake Cousins (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (4-4) (Swept a doubleheader up in New Hampshire)

Game 1 (Won, 10-2)

DH Spencer Jones: 2-for-3, 2B (1), RBI, 3 RS, BB
Jones finally makes his 2024 debut. One of the Yankees’ top prospects (he could be #1 based on who you ask), Jones went 8-for-18 with two doubles and a homer during spring training.
1B T.J. Rumfield2-for-4, RBI, RS
7-for-23 (.304) with a double, six walks, and four strikeouts.
SS Ben Cowles0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, K
C J.C. Escarra0-for-2, SF, 2 RBI, BB
CF Grant Richardson0-for-4
RF Jared Wegner1-for-4, HR (2), 3 RBI, RS, K
Back-to-back games with a home run.
2B Anthony Seigler1-for-4, RS, K
LF Aaron Palensky2-for-3, 2 2B (3), RS, BB, K
5-for-17 with three doubles, five walks, and five strikeouts.
3B Max Burt1-for-4, HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 RS, SB (1), K
Burt reached double digits in home runs and stolen bases in 2022 and 2023.

RHP Bailey Dees4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 6 K
Bees tosses 81 pitches in his second start of the season. He is converting from the bullpen, so it’s a process.
RHP Kevin Stevens (W, 1-0): 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Game 2 (Won, 3-1)

DH Ben Rice1-for-4
.233/.324/.333 in 34 PA. He hit a leadoff HR on Opening Day and hasn’t homered since. Is that a problem? No. It’s the quirks of baseball.
C Agustin Ramirez2-for-4, HR (6), RBI, RS
He has homered in six of his seven games this season (and has a 7-game hitting streak that is eight if you go back to 2023). He is hitting .290/.333/.871 in 33 PA.
3B Ben Cowles2-for-3, 2B (4), 2 RS, HBP
Cowles is hitting .407/.500/.556 in 32 PA. He has hit safely in seven of his eight games.
RF J.C. Escarra1-for-4, 2B (2), RBI, K
Catcher in Game 1, RF in Game 2. That is how a player can keep himself employed.
CF Grant Richardson0-for-4, 4 K
2B Anthony Seigler1-for-3, RBI, 2 K
LF Jared Wegner1-for-3, SB (2)
Wegner had a solid senior season for Arkansas (.312/.457/.674 with 15 home runs), enough for the Yankees to draft him. While he did play a little CF in college, he likely sticks to the corner OF spots in the pros.
1B Spencer Henson0-for-3
Like Jones, this is Henson’s 2024 debut. Last season, for Hudson Valley, the 26-year-old hit .252/.327/.453 with 14 home runs in 339 plate appearances.
SS Max Burt0-for-2, BB, K

RHP Trystan Vrieling: (W, 2-0) 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
First two professional starts: 11 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 12 K. Is he this year’s Drew Thorpe? Way too early for that, but you have to be encouraged when a kid is thrown straight into the Double-A fire without any other minor league experience and performs.
RHP Carlos Gomez (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (4-2) (Defeated Rome, 3-0)

2B Jared Serna1-for-5, RS, K
.263/.391/.579 in 23 PA with four walks and three strikeouts.
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4
I have mentioned his versatility in the past. In his six starts this year, he has played third base three times, catcher twice, and left field once. Last year, he played the same positions along with time at first base.
DH Omar Martinez1-for-4, 3B (1), RBI, K
7-for-21 with a triple, home run, two walks, and four strikeouts. There is nice catching depth in the system.
RF Garrett Martin1-for-3, RS, SB (1), HBP
Martin’s first professional stolen base.
C Rafael Flores2-for-4, RS, K
7-for-20 with two doubles and a homer. He will split time between catching and first base.
1B Kiko Romero0-for-2, 2 BB, 2K
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, RBI, K
CF Nelson Medina0-for-4, 4 K
LF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, BB, K

RHP Sebastian Keane4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K
Keane was used primarily as a reliever during his 2023 debut season. However, he had plenty of experience as a starter in college. They didn’t push him beyond 72 pitches, but this effort was impressive.
RHP Trent Sellers (W, 2-0): 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 12 K. I would consider this a nice start to his career.
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert (S, 2): 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Tampa (2-6) (Defeated Dunedin, 8-7, in ten innings)

SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-4, RBI, 2 SB (5), 2 BB, 3 K
Lombard Jr. has a silly 35% BB rate. Small sample sizes rule. The single was a 107.2 MPH bullet that brought in the winning run in the 10th.
DH Roderick Arias: 2-for-5, 2 2B (3), RS, CS (2), 2 K
Arias is hitting .212 with a .752 OPS. Five of his seven hits have gone for extra bases (3 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR).
3B Dylan Jasso1-for-2, RS, 3 BB
7-for-21 with six walks. Many undrafted free agents are on the older side, but Jasso is only 21.
1B Coby Morales0-for-4, BB, K
CF Willy Montero1-for-5, RBI, 2 K
Montero was second to teammate John Cruz (no longer in the system) with his 43 RBI in the FCL last year. He is off to a slow start here (3-for-26).
RF Daury Arias0-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K
C Tomas Frick1-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, RS, BB, K
  PR Enmanuel Tejeda0-for-0, RS
LF Tayler Aguilar1-for-2, HR (1), 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (2), 3 BB, K
It has been a frustrating few years for Aguilar, so it’s nice to see him put up this effort.
2B Brenny Escanio0-for-4, RS, BB, K

RHP Ryan Harvey1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
Harvey spent time on the injured list late last season, so I assume they are bringing him back slowly.
RHP Kris Bow2.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
The results aren’t what he wants, but he did touch 97 MPH (he averaged 94). He has control issues (understatement) that he will need to clean up.
RHP Osiel Rodriguez: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 HR, 1 BB, 4 K
You can work with someone who flashes mid-90s 4-seamers and sinkers (he featured a 5-pitch mix tonight).
RHP Aaron Nixon2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K
RHP Huey Morrill: (W, 2-0)  1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Yankees MILB 9/3: George Lombard Jr.: 4 Hits, 3 RBI

News:

No news to report.

Scranton (65-65; 31-25 in the second half) (Lost to Rochester, 10-3)

LF Estevan Florial0-for-5, K
Last 6 games: 3-for-28.
2B Jamie Westbrook1-for-5, HR (20), RBI, RS
Westbrook reaches 20 HR for the first time in his professional career.
C Carlos Narvaez: 3-for-4, 2B (9), HR (9), RBI, 2 RS, BB, CS (1)
Narvaez has 11 HR between here and Somerset, matching his personal best for HR in a season set last year. The difference? He hit .194/.327/.383 last season and is hitting .257/.387/.425 this season.
RF Franchy Cordero2-for-4, K
1B Rodolfo Duran1-for-2, 2 BB
CF Brandon Lockridge1-for-3, RBI, BB, K
.301/.380/.421 in 300 PA between here and Somerset (14 doubles, 4 triples, 3 HR, 26 RBI, 38 R, 33 BB, 67 K, 38-for-42 SB)
3B Jake Lamb1-for-4

LHP Matt Krook1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
0.92 ERA (29.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 20 BB, 49 K). I bet the Yankees wish they had more than 28 slots in September, as Krook would be a good candidate to allocate some innings to.
RHP Zach McAllister0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Michael Gomez0.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Aaron McGarity0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K

Somerset (76-49; 34-23 in the second half) (Lost to Portland, 8-3)

DH Caleb Durbin: 2-for-3, 2B (11), HR (4), RBI, RS
Durbin hits a lead-off home run. I am not sure why he was pulled from the game – something to monitor, given his injury earlier this season. Anyway, he has five multi-hit games in his last nine games. In that stretch, he has six doubles, a home run, and four stolen bases.
  PH-DH Aaron Palensky0-for-2, K
1B Ben Rice0-for-3, BB, 2 K
Since his 4-for-6, 2 HR, 5 RBI night: 2-for-16, 1 BB, 9 K. Baseball is a funny sport.
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-4, 2 K
Since promotion: .232/.290/.333 in 107 PA. Overall, he is hitting .281/.374/.471 in 460 PA (21 doubles, 18 HR, 68 RBI, 69 R, 58 BB, 78 K, 11-for-15 SB)
CF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, K
2B Mickey Gasper1-for-3, RS, BB

3B Max Burt2-for-4, RBI, SB (15)
SS Eduardo Torrealba1-for-4

RHP Yoendrys Gomez: (L, 0-3)  3.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
3.47 ERA (57 IP, 43 H, 24 R, 22 ER, 6 HR, 29 BB, 66 K). After making 15 starts in 2022, he is up to 17 starts in 2023. He struggled a bit today but did get up to 79 pitches, which is a new career high.
RHP Bailey Dees1.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Danny Watson1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Between here and Hudson Valley: 1.53 ERA (59 IP, 29 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 5 HR, 25 BB, 79 K). Watson had a 5.55 BB/9 in 2022. In 2023, it is now 3.81. Furthermore, he isn’t sacrificing strikeouts for control (12.05/9 in 2023; 10.18/9 in 2022).
RHP Alex Mauricio1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.91 ERA (46.1 IP, 38 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 4 HR, 14 BB, 42 K). This is his 10th consecutive scoreless outing.

Hudson Valley (68-58; 29-31 in the second half) (Lost to Wilmington, 5-3)

SS Jared Serna1-for-4, RS
Serna extends his hitting streak to 13 (17-for-55; .309). He has 18 strikeouts in 100 PA (18%) at this level and 85 strikeouts in 543 PA overall (15.7%). While that is a slight uptick, it does show you that this level is not overwhelming him at all.
3B Ben Cowles1-for-4, 3B (2), 2 RBI, RS, K
DH T.J. Rumfield0-for-3, SF, RBI, K
I believe this is his first full game since his rehab stint began – next up is a full game in the field. The season has a few weeks left, and he will spend the majority of that in Somerset I would think.
1B Spencer Henson0-for-4, K
C Rafael Flores0-for-3, BB
RF Jared Wegner1-for-4, K
13-for-43 at this level.
CF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, BB, K
2B Luis Santos0-for-2, BB, SB (9)

RHP Shane Gray1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Tampa (60-64; 29-29 in the second half) (Lost to St. Lucie, 7-4)

SS George Lombard Jr: 4-for-5, 2B (1), 3 RBI, RS, K
Lombard has reached base safely in all 11 of his professional games (including playoffs). This is his first professional 4-hit game and he is now 5-for-13 with five walks and four strikeouts at this level and 10-for-25 (.400) with two doubles, ten walks, six strikeouts, and a 4-for-4 stolen base rate overall (if I include his FCL playoff stint, he is 13-for-36 (.361))
DH Roc Riggio0-for-3, BB, K, SB (3)
.193/.395/.228 at this level with two doubles, 18 walks, and 18 strikeouts (23.7%)
  PH Josh Moylan0-for-1, K
RF Jackson Castillo0-for-5, 3 K
C Omar Martinez2-for-3, 2 BB, K
Martinez has a 15.1% BB (25.7% K, which he will probably want to take down a bit)
2B Brenny Escanio0-for-4, BB
1B Dylan Jasso0-for-3, BB, K
CF Nelson Medina1-for-3, RS, BB, K, CS (2)
LF Daury Arias0-for-2, 2 RS, BB, HBP
3B Beau Brewer0-for-2, BB, HBP

RHP Sebastian Keane: (L, 0-1)  2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
Keane’s first professional start (the concept isn’t foreign to him as he started in college). He tossed 45 pitches and featured a five-pitch mix (4-seam, slider, curve, sinker, change)
RHP Yoljeldriz Diaz0.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Alex Bustamante0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

LHP Geoffrey Gilbert2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.09 ERA (46.2 IP, 35 H, 17 R, 16 ER, 1 HR, 26 BB, 57 K). Not a bad first taste of professional ball. He maxed out at 93.8 with his fastball today.
RHP Matt Keating1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
3.64 ERA (59.1 IP, 58 H, 30 R, 24 ER, 5 HR, 33 BB, 86 K). Technically, this isn’t his first taste of professional ball as he threw one FCL inning in 2022.
