Yankees MILB 8/15: Austin Wells Hits First Triple-A Homer

News:

RHP Justin Lange was promoted from Tampa to Hudson Valley today.

The 21-year-old, acquired from the Padres for Luke Voit, pitched to a 4.58 ERA (4.80 FIP) over 72.2 innings for Tampa. He struck out a whopping 34.3% of hitters but walked 16.4%. Lange is the ultimate lottery ticket as the stuff is there for him to be a top pitching prospect. However, harnessing that stuff is a challenge.

I see Lange as a future power reliever, as I can see him taking a Dellin Betances path over the next several years. This isn’t me predicting he will be as good as Betances, who was among the top relievers in baseball during his prime.

Peraza’s RBI double with two outs in the top of the 9th was the game-winning hit.

Ramirez was 4-for-25 since his promotion entering tonight, so it is nice to see him compile a multi-hit game. This is not an easy jump, so we’ll see how he adjusts over the next month.

Durbin’s first game since June 17th. He was amongst the minor league stolen base leaders (with 29) at the time of his injury. That number held up in this organization until Jasson Dominguez and Brandon Lockridge recently surpassed it.

No worries – Durbin was not going to play a full game on his first day back. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is the designated hitter tomorrow.

In 2022, the league leader in home runs hit six. In other words, hitting seven in 44 games is no small feat. Delgado is hitting .287/.400/.481 with 28 stolen bases in 33 attempts. He is 19 years old, so I think a trip to Tampa before the season ends would be wise.

RF Willy Montero: 1-for-4, RBI
Montero is hitting .345/.395/.458 and his 41 RBI (43 games) rank him second in the FCL.
3B Dylan Jasso: 0-for-4, K
This snaps Jasso’s 6-game hitting streak. He is searching for that first professional home run but does have seven doubles in 12 games.
LF John Cruz: 0-for-2, 2 BB, K, SB (8)
.289/.367/.535 in 180 PA (5 doubles, 2 triples, 10 HR, 44 RBI, 27 R, 18 BB, 41 K, 8-for-11 SB). Cruz leads the league in RBI and is second in home runs (to a kid who is old enough to be his grandfather – OK, I am exaggerating). Cruz was signed for $75,000 in 2022 and thus far is making the Yankees look wise for that investment.
2B Enmanuel Tejeda: 1-for-3, BB, 2 K, SB (22)
.311/.470/.477 in 198 PA. The one thing I like about the 18-year-old is that he is mostly hitting just like he did in the DSL, while doubling his stolen base total.

.256/.410/.405 in 212 PA with a perfect 15-for-15 stolen base rate. After a red-hot start, he has fallen down. The overall line remains encouraging and I hope he can close his season on a hot streak.

We all know that Peraza had a 4 BB game for the MLB squad this year – this is his first such game in his minor league career.

Wells has six doubles in 16 games since his promotion (20 doubles in 74 games between here and Somerset). He is up to .273 with a .753 OPS in 16 games since his promotion.

Pereira has 30 RBI and 22 runs scored in 26 games since his promotion. Between Scranton and Somerset, he is hitting .309/.371/.559 with 16 homers and 61 RBI in 72 games. Furthermore, Pereira has seven multi-hit games in his last 11 games played.

Dominguez increases his hitting streak to eight, including four straight multi-hit games. During this stretch, he is 15-for-34 (.441/.500/.647; 4 doubles, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 6 R, 4 BB, 6 K, 6-for-7 SB). Overall, his line is up to .245/.365/.396 in 455 PA (14 doubles, 2 triples, 13 HR, 58 RBI, 71 R, 72 BB (15.8%), 118 K (25.9%), 35-for-42 SB (83.3%)). He is certainly earning that spot atop the Yankees’ prospect list.

Rice didn’t show much interest in stealing bases in 2021-2022, swiping five in 90 games. He has eight in 41 games this year, including four in his last five games.

Ramirez’s first Double-A hit. A common question I receive is about his defense. If he continues to hit like he is doing in 2023, you won’t care much about his defense. That said, I haven’t read anything that indicates that he will need to move off of the catching position.

Stuart threw 89 pitches. There is always that fine line with prospects – you want them to get their full work in but you don’t want them to feel overwhelmed. To Stuart’s credit, he tossed a scoreless 6th after giving up five runs in the 5th.

The Yankees added RHP Keynan Middleton from the Chicago White Sox for RHP Juan Carela (Rule 5 eligible).

The Yankees needed some bullpen innings (I guess) and acquired a pure rental to fill those innings. I guess that excites someone.

This year for the White Sox, the 29-year-old pitched to a 3.96 ERA in 39 games. He is showing off an impressive strikeout rate (30.1%) and, by emphasizing his changeup more, he has increased his GB rate to 50%. It was 26% in Arizona in 2022.

If Middleton started 2023 with the Yankees, we would be touting him as a major Matt Blake success story. While that is well and good, I am not sure what he adds to this bullpen for two months. He would be a nice complimentary acquisition of something bigger. As a lone acquisition, what’s the point?

Carela (21) pitched to a 3.67 ERA (3.73 FIP) over 83.1 innings for High-A Hudson Valley. His 31.1% K rate shows some of his potential, but he doesn’t possess the velocity that organizations look for. For Chicago, he represents a decent get for a rental relief pitcher. One can project him as a future reliever who focuses heavily on his breaking stuff.

The Yankees made a smaller trade for RHP Spencer Howard, giving up only cash considerations to the Texas Rangers. Howard has done nothing to thrill you in MLB, but he was ranked as the 27th prospect in MLB by Baseball America in 2021. Storing his arm in Triple-A hurts nobody, so this doesn’t bother me. If the Yankees made a meaningful acquisition today, his news would have been buried.

Breaux joins Carlos Narvaez and Rodolfo Duran as catching options in Scranton, at least for as long as Ben Rortvedt is out.

Sauer will eventually end up in either Somerset or Scranton. He only made four starts for Somerset last year, so he will likely go there.

Yankees MILB 6/1: Jasson Dominguez: 3-Run Boom!

News:

UTIL Oswaldo Cabrera was demoted to Scranton after the Yankees-Mariners game last night.

Cabrera was a high-energy catalyst last season for the Yankees. He hit .247/.312/.429 (108 OPS+; 111 wRC+) while playing strong defense at multiple positions (including the outfield, where he was a novice). This season, he couldn’t get anything going. Cabrera hit .195/.246/.292 (46 wRC+) with 3 home runs and 15 runs batted in. One encouraging sign is his 19.6% strikeout rate, but nothing else in his offensive profile was solid enough to make you think a turnaround was coming soon. The only position he is blocked at in the minors is shortstop (Oswald Peraza). That said, Peraza could slide over to other positions to give Cabrera some time at shortstop.

This isn’t the end of Cabrera’s story. He has things to work on, and Scranton is where he will work on them. The Yankees aren’t immune to injuries, so it is up to Cabrera to keep himself sharp so that he can be next in line when a need arises.

OF Kole Calhoun is opting out of his minor league deal. The Yankees have 72 hours to promote him or release him. The promotion seems doubtful.  He was in tonight’s lineup for Scranton, as the Yankees can still use him until the 72 hours are up. Including tonight, the 35-year-old is hitting .291/.396/.547 in 22 games for Scranton.

1.80 ERA (20 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 32 K). Neely has 124 strikeouts in 72.1 career innings, The walks aren’t ideal (38), but I am always a believer in moving college relievers as quickly as possible.

Tampa (20-28) (Lost to Bradenton, 7-2)

Serna has at least one hit in 11 of his last 12 games. However, only three of those games feature multiple hits, so his average has dropped from .325 to .310 (not exactly bad!). The strikeout rate has ticked up lately, thanks to eight strikeouts in his last four games (he didn’t reach eight strikeouts for the season until May 9th (his 22nd game)).

Hall hasn’t skipped many beats since his 4-for-33 April. He was dominant in May and is trying to carry that over to June.

Peraza is now the owner of a 7-game hitting streak and has 8 HR in his last ten games. This is his 4th career multi-HR game (second this month). I have said since Spring Training that he has nothing to prove here. I don’t care about a logjam in MLB – Peraza does not belong here.  Anyway, he is hitting .347/.398/.663.

Since promotion: .254/.347/.333 in 72 plate appearances with 7 walks and only 2 strikeouts. The Braves recently DFA’s Lucas Luetge, the pitcher who the Yankees sent over for Durbin (and RHP Indigo Diaz)

6 of Rosario’s 17 hits have gone over the fence. His BABIP is an insanely low .180.

Palensky is a perfect 11-for-11 stealing bases between here and Hudson Valley.

Barclay’s first appearance of 2023 (and first in Double-A). He pitched to a 1.74 ERA and 33.5% K rate for Hudson Valley last season. He is someone to watch.

While he didn’t strike anyone out in his Double-A debut, he was a K machine for Hudson Valley.

One has to assume he will make his way to Scranton soon enough. That will place four catchers in Triple-A: Ben Rortvedt, Rodolfo Duran, Carlos Narvaez, and Breaux. I assume Narvaez will be the one on the way back to Somerset.

1B Rafael Flores: 2-for-3, 2B (7), RBI, BB
.328/.381/.403 in 147 plate appearances. A surprising early entry in the “race” for the organization’s batting crown.

He finishes May with a 5-game hitting streak and an overall .333/.400/.439 line.
LF Grant Richardson: 1-for-4, HR (5), RBI, RS, K
He hit .203/.284/.329 in May. However, the good news is that he started very slow before coming on strong over the past few weeks.

Serna’s 10-game hitting streak is snapped.
RF-CF Daury Arias: 1-for-5
Arias went 22-for-80 (.275) in May. He hit .167/.254/.250 in April.
C Agustin Ramirez: 2-for-3, 2B (5), RBI, 2 BB
Ramirez walks it off in the 10th. He has walked seven times in his last two games (18 times in May to go along with his 5 doubles and 4 home runs)

Hall goes 23-for-68 in May with 17 walks. Again, I can’t imagine him being here for too long.

Medina has been solid thus far, so let’s hope that any injury he has suffered is short-term.

Bow’s most impressive outing to date (he struggled in his first two starts of 2023). His experience is limited but he seems to have some good stuff to work with (a mid-90s sinker is always a nice start)
RHP Yorlin Calderon: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
2.38 ERA (22.2 IP, 20 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 27 K). Calderon tossed a 7-inning no-hitter in his debut at this level last year. In 2023, they have kept him in the bullpen with solid results. 
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
2.14 ERA (21 IP, 16 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 HR, 11 BB, 26 K). Some have asked if he can be stretched out to start, given he did a little starting for Clemson. I am sure the Yankees will consider it as they have tried that path with many of their pitching prospects. 
RHP Matt Keating: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
2.11 ERA (21.1 IP, 16 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 11 BB, 32 K). Even after the promotion of Watson, strong arms remain down here in Tampa.
RHP Cole Ayers: (W, 1-1) 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K

Some promotions in the organization today, though the top prospects you hear about the most weren’t a part of this wave. I won’t get into all of them.

OF Aaron Palensky, who compiled an insane .352/.434/.744 (205 wRC+) for Hudson Valley, is now in Somerset. This is not his first taste of Double-A. In 2021, he was assigned there instantly after signing with the Yankees. He compiled an impressive 15.3% BB but only hit .216/.360/.378. That isn’t bad for a player who never played at any other professional level. That was likely done out of necessity though and he was appropriately placed in Hudson Valley to start 2022, where he hit .251/.369/.475.  He earned the chance to prove he can hit at the upper levels. He is Rule 5 eligible this winter.

Joining Palensky in Somerset are RHP Danny Watson, who compiled an impressive 39% K rate in Hudson Valley, and LHP Edgar Barclay, who hasn’t pitched in 2023. The 25-year-old compiled an impressive 1.74 ERA and 33.5% K rate for Hudson Valley in 2022. He is already Rule 5 eligible (some were scared that he might get selected last winter)

Unfortunately, with promotions typically come releases. The Yankees have released RHP Justin Maese, RHP Enrique Santana, and OF Alan Mejia. Mejia has his share of fans who look for deep sleepers, but he hasn’t been able to match his .314/.414/.569 line from 2019 (DSL). Maese is a former 3rd round pick by the Blue Jays back in 2015. He has never made it past Double-A.

Scranton (26-26) (Defeated Lehigh Valley, 4-1)

CF Estevan Florial: 1-for-3, 2B (7), RBI, BB, K, SB (11), CS (6)
Florial is now the owner of a 9-game hitting streak (16-for-41; 2 doubles, 6 home runs, 12 RBI, 12 runs). Tonight was the first game during the streak where he did not score a run. 
SS Oswald Peraza: 2-for-4, HR (7), RBI, RS, HBP, K
Peraza has 6 home runs in his last 9 games. He is not having any struggles at this level.

Chaparro increases his hitting streak to 7. Surprisingly, this is his first extra-base hit during the streak.

His organizational debut. He was signed to a minor league contract recently out of the Mexican League (he has plenty of MLB experience)
