Yankees MILB 7/16: Jasson Dominguez: Heating Up

News:

Veteran RHP Matt Bowman has opted out of his minor league deal. The Yankees have 72 hours to add him to the MLB roster or lose him. The 32-year-old has a 3.29 ERA in 38.1 innings for Scranton with a 36/18 K/BB. He hasn’t pitched in MLB since 2019.

OF Anthony Hall, who is hitting .271/.387/.452 (131 wRC+) for Tampa, is currently on the injured list (was placed there on 7/5). Hall, who only received one plate appearance before going down to injury in 2022, was likely in line for a promotion.

The Yankees have recalled IF Oswald Peraza. You likely have read about his slump (I highlighted it myself) and his less-than-ideal metrics. While that isn’t meaningless, I think that Peraza has established that he can play in Triple-A over the last two seasons. If you don’t give him a chance now, when are you going to give him one?

Florial is 10-for-34 (.294) in July with seven walks. 
CF Everson Pereira: 1-for-4, 2B (3), RS
Pereira has at least one hit in all seven games since his promotion. Going back to his days in Somerset, he has a 9-game hitting streak. Between here and Somerset, he is hitting a gaudy .308/.373/.554 in 217 PA (13 doubles, 1 triple 11 HR, 40 RBI, 32 R, 20 BB, 61 K). The 28.1% K has to come down – that’s the one thing in his profile that gives you a little pause. For what it is worth, in the small Triple-A sample size, it sits at 21.9%.

Yankees MILB 7/9: Drew Thorpe is Cruising

News:

Just like their MLB counterparts, the minor leagues will be taking Monday – Thursday off. The only exception is the DSL – poor kids.

Tonight is the MLB draft. Who do I think the Yankees will select?  I couldn’t tell you who most of the prospects are. If they don’t end up with Dave Parrish 2.0, that will be a good start.

Scranton (41-43; 7-3 in the second half. They will need to win the second half in order to make it to the playoffs)

Their game against Lehigh Valley was postponed, so they will get an early start to their vacation. Here are some notes:

Estevan Florial: .294/.389/.596 (138 wRC+; 14% BB, 28.7% K) – His 21 home runs are good for second in the International League (Luken Baker (STL) has 22).

Oswald Peraza: .267/.354/.506 (111 wRC+; 8.7% BB, 17.5% K) – The numbers may not scream at you (the International League is an offensive league), but Peraza seriously has nothing to prove here.

Everson Pereira: 9-for-17 (.529) with a home run and seven runs batted in since his promotion. Can a hot July get him to the Bronx in early August? The organization needs a left fielder and could determine that Pereira can do just as much as a trade option. We have a few weeks to figure all that out.

Andres Chaparro: .242/.334/.464 (93 wRC+; 11.7% BB, 20.9% K) – He leads the organization with 60 runs batted in. The fact that a .798 OPS is good for only a 93 wRC+ emphasizes how offensive this league is. Brent Rooker (Oakland) has a .797 OPS in MLB and his wRC+ is 125.

Ben Rortvedt: .298/.416/.543 (141 wRC+; 14.2% BB, 23% K) – He just has to stay healthy.

Carlos Narvaez: .271/.416/.441 (121 wRC+; 18.1% BB, 20.8% K) – Don’t be surprised if you see his name come up in trade talks in the next few weeks. No, he cannot headline a trade. However, he is an upper-level catcher who is having success with the bat. That has value.

Somerset (47-32; 5-6 in the second half) (The game against Reading was suspended in the bottom of the 9th with the score tied at 4-4. They will finish it on August 15th)

2.41 ERA (37.1 IP, 19 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 3 HR, 14 BB, 59 K). Kids like Neely should overpower this level, and he is.

Tampa (40-41; 9-6 in the second half) (Defeated Dunedin, 6-1. They didn’t get off to a great start to 2023 but now they are on the brink of reaching .500)

He goes into the break hitting .285/.346/.481 in 347 PA (18 doubles, 1 triple, 14 HR, 51 RBI, 55 R, 28 BB (8.1%), 59 K (17%), 16-for-21 SB). There isn’t much to complain about with Serna – he has been everything you would want him to be. From the leadoff spot, he leads the FSL in home runs and RBI, while ranking third in runs scored. 
3B Jesus Rodriguez: 0-for-3, BB
DH Ben Rice: 2-for-3, 2B (3), RS, BB
Rice was having no issues with High-A pitching before his injury – did we expect him to have any trouble here during his rehab stint? The rust is seemingly shaken off.

.237/.366/.374 in 238 PA (7 doubles,1 triple, 6 HR, 29 RBI, 29 R, 37 BB (15.5%), 72 K (30.3%), 5-for-6 SB). I love the walks – the strikeouts need improvement.

Vargas started the season 1-for-13. He is 16-for-51 (.314) since with all nine of his extra-base hits.

Durbin is now 14-for-15 in the stolen base department. He is 23 and played 32 games at this level (for the Braves organization) in 2022. Hence, I assume he will be on the promotion list early if he keeps this up.
