Yankees MILB 7/30: Agustin Ramirez Collects 3 Hits

News:

There hasn’t been much smoke surrounding the Yankees when it comes to the trade deadline.

There is talk about Gleyber Torres attracting the attention of the Marlins again. Since this is the second year in a row, perhaps they will give up something of real value for him. If I sound lukewarm, it is because I am. I need to see it to believe it.

There isn’t a magic bullet waiting in Triple-A to save this team. I like Oswald Peraza but the Yankees made their feelings known this past week. They aren’t going to use Estevan FlorialEverson Pereira and Austin Wells are the closest kids they have, but they insist on Wells catching and Pereira needs time. Andres Chaparro is a player who may provide some instant offense but he has defensive limitations. I have yet to see an evaluator who thinks he is playing third base in MLB.

I honestly don’t know what the Yankees will or can do. They have less than 48 hours to show their cards. My guess is that they will show 8-high, for those who know poker.

Scranton (46-53; 12-13 in the second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 11-8. Buffalo scored at will over the weekend)

RF Estevan Florial2-for-5, HR (23), 2 RBI, RS, K
.297/.390/.592 in 372 PA (16 doubles, 4 triples, 23 HR, 59 RBI, 63 R, 50 BB (13.4%), 109 K (29.3%), 18-for-28 SB). While he hit only three home runs in July, he finishes the month 22-for-68 (.324) with ten walks and (of course) 24 strikeouts. If it feels like he earns a hit just about every time he makes contact, you aren’t alone. His BABIP numbers continue to be insane. Entering today, his BABIP was .376. His career mark is .365. We are well beyond the point of using a sample size excuse.
SS Oswaldo Cabrera1-for-4, BB, 2 K, SB (2)
LF Everson Pereira0-for-5, 2 K
Everyone has a rough day eventually. Pereira is hitting .325/.366/.584 in 82 PA since his promotion though it comes with a 3/24 BB/K.
DH Franchy Cordero: 1-for-3, 2B (10), RS, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (4)
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-5, RS, 2 K
At this level: .272/.400/.456 in 195 PA. Narvaez goes 15-for-55 (.273) in July with three doubles and three home runs.
3B Jamie Westbrook: 2-for-4, 2B (12), HR (15), 2 RBI, RS, K
Westbrook is four home runs away from matching his season best (19 in 2018)
1B Rodolfo Duran: 2-for-3, HR (8), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Snaps a 1-for-17 slump
53 games in Somerset, 2022: .222/.266/.414 with 9 HR and 33 RBI
54 games in Scranton, 2023: .237/.308/.437 with 8 HR and 29 RBI
2B Wilmer Difo1-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, RS
CF Brandon Lockridge: 2-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, HBP, K, CS (2)
Lockridge is hitting .306/.376/.408 in 109 PA at this level and .309/.386/.459 in 223 PA overall (12 doubles, 4 triples, 3 HR, 24 RBI, 29 R, 24 BB, 52 K, 27-for-31 SB)

RHP Mitch Spence: (L, 8-6) 5 IP, 10 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 2 HR
5.02 ERA (107.2 IP, 112 H, 67 R, 60 ER, 22 HR, 38 BB, 92 K)
RHP Zach Greene1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Matt Bowman1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Greg Weissert1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
3.41 ERA (31.2 IP, 24 H, 17 R, 12 ER, 4 HR, 15 BB, 45 K)

Somerset (58-36; 16-10 in the second half) (Defeated Bowie, 6-5)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-3, RS, BB, HBP, SB (15)
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-3, RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (29)
Dominguez, who stole 11 bases in July, is now tied with Caleb Durbin for the organizational lead. Durbin has been out of action forever. I can only imagine where his total would be if he stayed healthy.
1B Ben Rice0-for-4, BB, 2 K
CF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, 2 K
3B Max Burt1-for-3, BB, K, SB (12)
2B Mickey Gasper: 1-for-4, 2 K
C Anthony Seigler1-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RS
DH Jeisson Rosario1-for-2, 2B (13), RBI, RS, SAC
I think I have typed “SAC” three or four times in the last two years – and I am not even joking. Anyway, Rosario has swatted nine doubles in his last 12 games.
RF Aaron Palensky: 2-for-4, 2B (7), HR (5), 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
Palensky really needed this. After an amazing start with Hudson Valley, he has struggled at times with Somerset. He finishes July 6-for-43.

RHP Matt Sauer5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
Nice performance by Sauer, who is up to 79 pitches. One has to assume he is ready to fully stretch out now.
RHP Jesus Liranzo0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Ryan Anderson0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Bailey Dees1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
His second Double-A appearance.
RHP Tanner Myatt0.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
LHP Lisandro Santos: (W, 2-3)  0.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Danny Watson (S, 3): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Watson continues to motor along…he has a 1.25 ERA in 21.2 IP since his promotion (9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 BB, 25 K)

Hudson Valley (54-42; 15-14 in the second half) (Shut down Hickory, 6-0)

2B Ben Cowles0-for-4, RS, BB, K, SB (13)
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-5, HR (8), RBI, RS, 2 K
.212/.261/.358 in 326 PA (10 doubles, 5 triples, 8 HR, 44 RBI, 42 R, 20 BB, 86 K, 10-for-15 SB). Vargas ties his personal best in home runs in 25 fewer games. The improvements between 2023 and 2002 are marginal, overall.
C Agustin Ramirez: 3-for-5, RS, SB (2)
Since promotion: .407/.455/.747 in 99 PA (10 doubles, 7 HR, 17 RBI, 18 R, 7 BB, 12 K, 2-for-2 SB). In 22 games at this level, he has multiple hits 12 times. He has failed to reach base in only one game. This isn’t some 23-year-old who is suddenly crushing young pitchers. He is only 21.
DH Christopher Familia0-for-2, 2 BB, HBP
Not known for his extreme plate discipline, Familia has four walks in his last two games. That brings his percentage up to 8.06% this season.
1B Spencer Henson: 4-for-4, 2B (14), 2 HR (13), SF, 4 RBI, 2 RS
.272/.358/.498 in 274 PA (14 doubles, 13 HR, 42 RBI, 45 R, 25 BB, 65 K).
RF Anthony Garcia0-for-5, 4 K
CF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-5, 2 K
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-2, 2 BB, K
LF Grant Richardson1-for-4, HR (10), RBI, RS, K
Richardson improved somewhat in July, hitting .232/.306/.482 with a triple and four home runs.

RHP Juan Carela2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
A long rain delay put an early end to his start. Season: 3.67 ERA (83.1 IP, 65 H, 40 R, 34 ER, 7 HR, 32 BB, 109 K)
RHP Harrison Cohen1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Since promotion: 2.33 ERA (27 IP, 20 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 HR, 12 BB, 34 K)
LHP Clay Aguilar1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
3.97 ERA (22.2 IP, 18 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 13 BB, 34 K)
RHP Luis Velasquez: (W, 2-1)  2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Since promotion: 3.26 ERA (19.1 IP, 14 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 25 K). July: 11.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 14 K
RHP Jack Neely2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
2.18 ERA (45.1 IP, 26 H, 14 R, 11 ER, 4 HR, 16 BB, 70 K). He has nothing else to prove here.

Tampa (46-50; 15-15 in the second half) (Defeated Dunedin, 8-3)

LF Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4, 2 RS, BB
In July, Rodriguez goes 27-for-91 (.297) with 13 RBI and 14 runs. Overall, he is hitting .295/.368/.428 in 324 PA with 33 walks (10.2%) and 46 strikeouts (14.2%).
1B Omar Martinez: 2-for-5, HR (12), 5 RBI, 2 RS
Martinez finishes off a scorching July with a bang. He drove home four runs in a game three times this month (26 RBI overall) while going 26-for-85 (.306) with five doubles and seven home runs.  This spiked his numbers to .254/.366/.445 in 303 plate appearances with 11 doubles, 12 HR, and 49 RBI.
DH Anthony Hall3-for-5, 2B (9), RS
Hall’s second 3-hit game this season improves his line to .275/.390/.454 in 249 PA with 37 BB (14.9%) and 55 K (22.1%).
CF Daury Arias1-for-4, 2 RBI, K
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-4, K
RF Tayler Aguilar1-for-4, 2 K
  RF Felix Negueis0-for-0
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-2, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
.190/.346/.619. Yes, that is a crazy line. Yes, it is because of an extremely small sample size (26 PA)
3B Brett Barrera0-for-4
C Manuel Palencia2-for-4, RS, K
Palencia’s Low-A debut. After two successful years in the DSL, he was hitting only .220/.313/.254 in 18 games for the FCL squad this season. He is 20 years old.

RHP Ryan Harvey3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K

Yankees MILB 7/26: Agustin Ramirez is on Fire

News:

Nothing to report.

Scranton (45-50; 11-9 in the second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 14-2)

LF Estevan Florial1-for-5, HR (22), RBI, RS, 2 K
His leadoff blast put the Railriders up 1-0 – it was downhill from there. He is on a 6-game hitting streak and is hitting .327/.424/.571 in July.
SS Oswaldo Cabrera1-for-4, K
CF Everson Pereira0-for-4, 3 K
DH Austin Wells1-for-3, 2B (2), RS, BB, K

Narvaez now has a 10-game hitting streak (12-for-36; .333)
1B Jake Lamb1-for-4

LHP Tanner Tully (L, 5-5): 2.2 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
RHP Aaron McGarity1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Deivi Garcia2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
4.97 ERA (41.2 IP, 43 H, 25 R, 23 ER, 7 HR, 29 BB, 41 K)
RHP Zac Houston2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR

Somerset (54-36; 12-10 in the second half) (Lost to Bowie, 6-5)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-5, 2 K
Sweeney now has a 9-game hitting streak.
DH Willie Calhoun1-for-5
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-4, BB, 2 K
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
I am not sure if Hardman will ever have a low strikeout rate – so adding in some value through walks will be imperative if he wants to reach his big-league potential.
CF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, K
C Ben Rice0-for-3, RS, BB, K
Since promotion: 10-for-20 (1 double, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 6 R, 2 BB, 2 K)
1B Mickey Gasper2-for-4, 2B (4), RBI, RS, K
2B Max Burt: 3-for-3, 2 2B (7), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Burt has four doubles in his last five games.
RF Jeisson Rosario: 2-for-4, 2B (9), 2 RBI, K

RHP Chase Hampton: 5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 8 K, HR
4.54 ERA since his promotion (39.2 IP, 35 H, 21 R, 20 ER, 6 HR, 14 BB, 48 K). Overall, he owns a 125/30 K/BB over 86.2 IP. It is easy to forget that this is Hampton’s first professional season.
RHP Tanner Myatt: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Alex Mauricio1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
4.09 ERA (33 IP, 34 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 4 HR, 12 BB, 34 K)
LHP Josh Maciejewski: (L, 0-2) 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR

Hudson Valley (52-39; 13-12 in the second half) (Shut down Hickory, 7-0)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-5, 2B (23), RS, K, SB (23)
Jones now has a 7-game hitting streak that features three doubles and a pair of home runs. He is hitting .275/.345/.484 in 357 PA with a 29.97% K rate.
2B Ben Cowles1-for-4, RS, HBP, 2 K, SB (12)
DH Agustin Ramirez2-for-4, HR (6), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Ramirez has homered in three straight games and in four of his last five contests. He has ten multi-hit games in 19 games since his promotion. Just pure dominant play and I can see him getting his feet wet in Somerset this year if he keeps this up. He is what you would call an exploding prospect at 21 years old.
LF Christopher Familia1-for-4, HR (4), 4 RBI, RS
Familia has homered in three straight games and has 15 home runs and 44 RBI in 39 games between here and Tampa.
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, K
1B Spencer Henson1-for-3, HR (11), RBI, RS, BB
Henson sets a new personal best for HR in a season (he has 21 HR in 134 games over the last two seasons)
C Antonio Gomez3-for-4, K
I know following prospects can often turn into a “flavor of the month” but Ramirez has moved ahead of Gomez on the catching depth chart, I assume. That said, Gomez is a no-doubt-about-it catcher who still has time to grow. He is hitting .243/.307/.343. While he is Rule 5 eligible, it is highly doubtful anyone will touch him.
RF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-3, BB, K

RHP Brendan Beck3.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Beck loaded the bases with nobody out at one point…struck out the next two hitters before inducing a popup. At this level: 0.60 ERA in 15 IP (13 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 16 K)
RHP Luis Velasquez (W, 1-1): 3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Since promotion: 3.63 ERA (17.1 IP, 14 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 13 BB, 20 K)
RHP Jack Neely: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
With Danny Watson and Bailey Dees up in Somerset, Neely must be wondering when it will be his turn. He owns a 2.28 ERA in 43.1 IP (24 H, 14 R, 11 ER, 4 HR, 16 BB, 67 K)

Tampa (44-48; 13-13 in the second half) (Knocked out Dunedin, 8-2)

2B Jared Serna0-for-3, RS, 2 BB
.287/.356/.493 in 399 PA.
C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-5, SB (14)
.296/.368/.434 in 311 PA. His offensive production has been consistent throughout 2023. As for the catching thing, I am not sure what the Yankees think of him behind the plate. They move him around the field, though 3B has been his other primary position.
1B Omar Martinez2-for-5, 2B (10), HR (11), 2 RBI, 2 RS
.250/.367/.438 in 286 PA (10 doubles, 1 triple, 11 HR, 44 RBI, 38 R, 42 BB, 80 K).
SS Brenny Escanio1-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K
CF Daury Arias1-for-3, 2 RS, BB, K
LF Jake Palmer3-for-4, 2 RBI, RS, K
Palmer has three 3-hit games in July.
DH Ronny Rojas1-for-3, SF, 2 RBI
RF Felix Negueis0-for-2, RS, BB, HBP
3B Jose Colmenares0-for-2, 2 BB, K, CS (1)

RHP Justin Lange: (W, 1-3) 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K
This is the kind of line you dream of with Lange – because if he ever unlocks himself, this is his potential. Anyway, he now owns a 4.92 ERA in 64 IP (44 H, 39 R, 35 ER, 7 HR, 51 BB, 102 K)
RHP Montana Semmel2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
Semmel hit 95.6 on the gun tonight.
RHP Cole Ayers1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.98 ERA (40.2 IP, 40 H, 21 R, 18 ER, 3 HR, 14 BB, 56 K). Ayers threw five different pitches in his short outing (sinker, 4-seam, cutter, slider, change).

FCL Yankees (19-14)

Day off.

DSL Yankees (22-13) (Lost the completion of a suspended game to the Blue Jays, 7-2. The game ended after only five innings)

I am not going to dig too much into the box score from this game – most of what happened occurred days ago.

CF Brando Mayea0-for-3, K
C Josue Gonzalez2-for-2, RS, SB (5)
.393/.571/.689 in 91 PA (10 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 20 RBI, 20 R, 24 BB, 11 K, 5-for-7 SB)

DSL Bombers (17-18) (Trail Arizona Red, 4-3, in the third inning. The game was suspended due to lightning)

Again, not going to focus much on what has happened thus far in this one.

CF Richard Meran2-for-2, RS

LF David Beckles1-for-1, 2B (6), 3 RBI, BB

Yankees MILB 7/18: Jasson Dominguez Stays Hot

News:

The Yankees have promoted a few players. Firstly, C/1B Ben Rice is on his way to Somerset. Rice just completed a rehab stint in Tampa. Earlier this season, he was a beast for Hudson Valley. He hit .341/.559/.523 in 68 plate appearances and was likely in line for an early promotion to Somerset at that point. Rice is a 24-year-old left-handed bat.

The Yankees promoted LHP Brock Selvidge from Tampa to Hudson Valley. Only 20 years old, Selvidge pitched to a 3.38 ERA (2.75 FIP) over 77.1 innings for Tampa. His rates across the board are impressive: 28% K, 6.5% BB, and 52% GB. He was their 21st-round pick in 2021 and is not Rule 5 eligible until after 2025. Selvidge is on the same flight (bus?) as RHP Shane Gray, who will also make his way to Hudson Valley. Gray, a reliever, pitched to a 4.26 ERA (4.32 FIP) over 38 innings with a 28.7% K and 9.1% BB. The 23-year-old was chosen in the 16th round of the 2022 draft.

We will probably see more promotions in the coming days ahead.

According to Chris Kirschner on Twitter, the Yankees have signed 17 of their 18 draft picks. The lone holdout is 4th round pick Roc Riggio, who has some leverage as a draft-eligible sophomore.

Scranton (43-45; 9-5 in the second half) (Defeated Norfolk, 5-3)

CF Greg Allen1-for-3, RS, BB, K
His rehab stint was moved here from Tampa.
   CF Brandon Lockridge0-for-1, K
RF Everson Pereira1-for-5, 2 K
Pereira has at least one hit in all eight games since his promotion. The most recent five of those games are 1-hit affairs, but he is still hitting .371/.405/.543.
C Carlos Narvaez2-for-4, RBI, BB, K, SB (2)
Narvaez increases his hitting streak to five.
3B Andres Chaparro2-for-5, HR (18), 2 RBI, RS
In July, Chaparro is 15-for-44 (.341) with 3 HR and 16 RBI.
1B Jake Lamb1-for-4
DH Jamie Westbrook1-for-2, HR (13), RBI, RS, 2 BB, K
The veteran is hitting .295/.391/.506 in 277 PA.
LF Michael Hermosillo2-for-4, 2B (3), RS
SS Jesus Bastidas1-for-4, RS, K, SB (6)
.261/.322/.430 in 276 PA. Bastidas has a .752 OPS this season after a .750 mark with Somerset in 2022.
2B Wilmer Difo0-for-1, SF, RBI, 2 BB

RHP Jhony Brito: (W, 2-1)  6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, HR
LHP Matt Krook1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
1.05 ERA (25.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 18 BB, 46 K). I would love to see Krook get an extended MLB opportunity.
RHP Aaron McGarity0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Zach Greene (S, 1): 0.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (49-34; 7-8 in the second half) (Lost to Hartford, 7-5)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-5, 3B (2), 3 RBI, K
If you are going to have a one-hit night, may as well make it a 3-run triple. Sweeney is hitting .245/.363/.425 in 366 plate appearances.
CF Jasson Dominguez2-for-5, HR (12), RBI, RS, K
Dominguez has four straight multi-hit games (six multi-hit games in his last seven games played). He is up to .220/.358/.383 in 363 plate appearances (27.3% K; 17.6% BB). After games of July 6th, he was hitting .198/.341/.343.
C Austin Wells1-for-5
Wells is 11-for-50 in July (.220). I would rather not see that, but he still doesn’t belong here.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-2, RS, 3 BB, 2 K
.217/.320/.446 in 284 plate appearances.
LF Elijah Dunham0-for-3, BB, HBP, K
3B Tyler Hardman1-for-3, 2B (9), RS, BB, 2 K
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
Palensky is hitting .187/.372/.374 in 121 plate appearances at this level.
DH Josh Breaux0-for-4, K
Breaux is 4-for-20 at this level after going 1-for-10 with Scranton.
2B Max Burt0-for-2, RBI, RS, BB, HBP, K, SB (10)

RHP Matt Sauer: (L, 1-2) 3.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K
Sauer needed 75 pitches to get those ten outs. The good part of that sentence is that he is being stretched out to 75 pitches after spending most of the first half on the shelf.
LHP Josh Maciejewski1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Blas Castano1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, HR
LHP Lisandro Santos: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR

Tampa (42-43; 11-8 in the second half) (Won a crazy one against Lakeland, 17-11)

SS Jared Serna2-for-5, HR (18), 3 RBI, 3 RS, BB, K
Serna has four home runs and 13 RBI in his last four games. Overall, he is hitting .290 with 18 doubles, 1 triple, 18 HR, 64 RBI, and 62 runs scored. An incredible season.
3B Jesus Rodriguez: 2-for-6, 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
Rodriguez has three multi-hit games in his last four games played. He is up to .294 and has hit for average in his entire short career (tonight was his 163rd career game). He is only 21 and won’t turn 22 until next April.
2B Brenny Escanio3-for-3, 2 2B (7), 2 RBI, 3 RS, 2 BB
Escanio only had three hits all month entering tonight. Baseball! Anyway, reaching base five times in a game is always a special night.
C Omar Martinez: 2-for-5, 2B (8), HR (9, grand slam), 4 RBI, 2 RS
Martinez has homered in four of his last five games and has back-to-back 4-RBI efforts. He has done a solid job drawing walks this season (14.8% BB) and is now showing off some power in July.
CF Daury Arias1-for-4, 2 RBI, RS, BB
DH Brett Barrera: 2-for-5, RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
The Stanford product hasn’t been able to get much going since being drafted in the 8th round of the 2022 draft. A 2-for-28 start to 2023 put him in an instant hole. An injury in June held him back as well.
LF Jake Palmer0-for-4, RBI, RS, BB
1B Beau Brewer1-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, BB, SB (2)
RF Felix Negueis0-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, K

RHP Sean Hermann2.1 IP, 0 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
A rain delay in the third inning derailed his outing – the two runners that were on base prior to the delay ended up scoring. In other words, I think he deserves a pass.
RHP Yorlin Calderon2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
3.12 ERA (49 IP, 41 H, 20 R, 17 ER, 4 HR, 13 BB, 62 K). After an extended stretch of awesomeness, he has allowed runs in each of his last three appearances. No need for concern.
RHP Alex Bustamante: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
RHP Cole Ayers: (W, 2-1) 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Ayers did an outstanding job calming this game down. He has a 3.79 ERA in 38 IP with a 52/13 K/BB.
RHP Montana Semmel0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Semmel’s Low-A debut. He was drafted back in 2019 out of high school – a kid whose development was altered by the lost COVID season and an injury that kept him out for 2021.

FCL Yankees (16-11)

Yankees MILB 7/16: Jasson Dominguez: Heating Up

News:

Veteran RHP Matt Bowman has opted out of his minor league deal. The Yankees have 72 hours to add him to the MLB roster or lose him. The 32-year-old has a 3.29 ERA in 38.1 innings for Scranton with a 36/18 K/BB. He hasn’t pitched in MLB since 2019.

OF Anthony Hall, who is hitting .271/.387/.452 (131 wRC+) for Tampa, is currently on the injured list (was placed there on 7/5). Hall, who only received one plate appearance before going down to injury in 2022, was likely in line for a promotion.

The Yankees have recalled IF Oswald Peraza. You likely have read about his slump (I highlighted it myself) and his less-than-ideal metrics. While that isn’t meaningless, I think that Peraza has established that he can play in Triple-A over the last two seasons. If you don’t give him a chance now, when are you going to give him one?

Scranton (42-45; 8-5 in the second half) (Lost to Norfolk, 4-3)

DH Estevan Florial1-for-3, RBI, 2 K
Florial is 10-for-34 (.294) in July with seven walks.
CF Everson Pereira1-for-4, 2B (3), RS
Pereira has at least one hit in all seven games since his promotion. Going back to his days in Somerset, he has a 9-game hitting streak. Between here and Somerset, he is hitting a gaudy .308/.373/.554 in 217 PA (13 doubles, 1 triple 11 HR, 40 RBI, 32 R, 20 BB, 61 K). The 28.1% K has to come down – that’s the one thing in his profile that gives you a little pause. For what it is worth, in the small Triple-A sample size, it sits at 21.9%.
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-4, 2B (3)
Since promotion: .272/.414/.464 in 157 PA.
3B Andres Chaparro: 2-for-4, 2B (17), RBI, RS, K
Chaparro is 13-for-39 (.333) in July with four doubles and 14 runs batted in. He is hitting .248/.336/.476 in 363 PA with 63 runs batted in.

RHP Michael Feliz1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
3.38 ERA (13.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 5 BB, 15 K). Don’t be surprised if the Yankees use him at some point.
LHP Anthony Misiewicz0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Michael Gomez0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (49-33; 7-7 in the second half) (Defeated Binghamton, 9-4)

SS Trey Sweeney3-for-5, 2 RBI, RS
Entering this game, he was drawing some walks in July (eight) but was only 6-for-30. Hopefully, this will get him back on track. This is his 5th 3-hit game this season. He is hitting .246/.366/.422 in 361 PA.
CF Jasson Dominguez2-for-4, 3B (2), 2 RBI, RS, BB
Dominguez has three straight multi-hit efforts and five in his last six games. He is hitting .217/.358/.372 in 258 PA (8 doubles, 2 triples, 11 HR, 43 RBI, 57 R, 64 BB, 98 K, 25-for-29 SB)
C Austin Wells0-for-3, SF, RBI, BB
9-for-45 (.200) in July with four walks and ten strikeouts. He does have 12 RBI, so there’s that.
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-5, 2B (10), RBI, RS, K
Rumfield has back-to-back multi-hit games and has doubled in three straight games.

Hudson Valley (48-36; 9-9 in the second half) (Lost to Bowling Green, 8-2)

DH Spencer Jones0-for-2, 2 BB, K, CS (8)
Jones has ten walks in his last ten games. He is hitting .264/.340/.465 in 324 PA. The strikeout today was his 100th this season. He is going to strike out – the key for him is to limit them as much as possible to make himself a viable MLB player.
SS Ben Cowles0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
C Agustin Ramirez: 2-for-4, 2B (9), RBI, RS
Since his promotion: .420/.453/.720 in 53 PA with seven multi-hit games (three consecutive). Overall, he is hitting .282/.396/.466 in 285 PA (16 doubles, 9 HR, 45 RBI, 42 R, 45 BB (15.8%), 47 K (16.5%), 7-for-11 SB)

RHP Juan Carela: (L, 2-4)  4.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 3 HR
As I said last night, Bowling Green can hit. Drew Thorpe was able to navigate their lineup – Carela was not. Take it as a learning opportunity. His ERA is now 3.51 (77 IP, 62 H, 36 R, 30 ER, 6 HR, 29 BB, 98 K).
LHP Clay Aguilar1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR

Yankees MILB 7/9: Drew Thorpe is Cruising

News:

Just like their MLB counterparts, the minor leagues will be taking Monday – Thursday off. The only exception is the DSL – poor kids.

Tonight is the MLB draft. Who do I think the Yankees will select?  I couldn’t tell you who most of the prospects are. If they don’t end up with Dave Parrish 2.0, that will be a good start.

Scranton (41-43; 7-3 in the second half. They will need to win the second half in order to make it to the playoffs)

Their game against Lehigh Valley was postponed, so they will get an early start to their vacation. Here are some notes:

Estevan Florial.294/.389/.596 (138 wRC+; 14% BB, 28.7% K) – His 21 home runs are good for second in the International League (Luken Baker (STL) has 22).

Oswald Peraza.267/.354/.506 (111 wRC+; 8.7% BB, 17.5% K) – The numbers may not scream at you (the International League is an offensive league), but Peraza seriously has nothing to prove here.

Everson Pereira: 9-for-17 (.529) with a home run and seven runs batted in since his promotion. Can a hot July get him to the Bronx in early August? The organization needs a left fielder and could determine that Pereira can do just as much as a trade option. We have a few weeks to figure all that out.

Andres Chaparro.242/.334/.464 (93 wRC+; 11.7% BB, 20.9% K) – He leads the organization with 60 runs batted in. The fact that a .798 OPS is good for only a 93 wRC+ emphasizes how offensive this league is. Brent Rooker (Oakland) has a .797 OPS in MLB and his wRC+ is 125.

Ben Rortvedt.298/.416/.543 (141 wRC+; 14.2% BB, 23% K) – He just has to stay healthy.

Carlos Narvaez.271/.416/.441 (121 wRC+; 18.1% BB, 20.8% K) – Don’t be surprised if you see his name come up in trade talks in the next few weeks. No, he cannot headline a trade. However, he is an upper-level catcher who is having success with the bat. That has value.

Somerset (47-32; 5-6 in the second half) (The game against Reading was suspended in the bottom of the 9th with the score tied at 4-4. They will finish it on August 15th)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, RS
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-4, K
C Austin Wells1-for-3, 2B (14)
Don’t worry about why Wells was pulled – he was ejected from the game. Anyway, he is now up to 107 Double-A games over the last two seasons. In those games (482 PA), he is hitting .255 with 22 doubles, 1 triple, 23 homers, 91 RBI, 61 R, 57 BB (11.8%), and 112 K (23.2%). He is also 11-for-11 SB.
   C Mickey Gasper0-for-1
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-3, BB, 2 K
1B T.J. Rumfield: 0-for-3, HBP
CF Elijah Dunham3-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS, K
This is a welcome sight for Dunham. He had four 3-hit efforts for Scranton this year, though two of them came in April. Hopefully, he gets a nice confidence boost and gets back up there quickly.
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-4, K
Palensky is down to .202 since his promotion (17-for-84; 5 doubles, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 20 R, 21 BB, 21 K, 7-for-8 SB). The walks have kept him afloat at this level after his .352/.434/.744 insanity with Hudson Valley.
DH Josh Breaux2-for-4, RS
2B Matt Pita1-for-3, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, K
Pita also hit a pair of home runs down in Tampa during his rehab stint.

RHP Richard Fitts: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
3.63 ERA (89.1 IP, 82 H, 37 R, 36 ER, 13 HR, 21 BB, 96 K). His last 9 starts: 2.09 ERA (56 IP, 44 H, 14 R, 13 ER, 11 BB, 60 K)
RHP Jesus Liranzo1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Lisandro Santos: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (47-34; 8-7 in the second half) (Shut out Jersey Shore, 2-0. The Renegades already clinched a playoff berth with their first-half title)

2B Ben Cowles1-for-4, 2B (11), RS, K
Cowles has doubled in three straight games and 9-for-27 (.333) in July.
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, K
Vargas, who got off to a very encouraging start, enters the break at .215/.264/.348 in 277 PA (10 doubles, 3 triples, 6 HR, 33 RBI, 33 R, 10-for-15 SB)
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-4, 2B (5), RBI, K
Since promotion: 14-for-38 (.368; 5 doubles, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 2 BB, 5 K)
DH Christopher Familia0-for-4, 4 K
Since promotion: 8-for-40 (.200; 2 doubles, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 7 R, 1 BB, 16 K). The Yankees needed to challenge him and he certainly is being challenged.
1B Spencer Henson0-for-3, 2 K
RF Anthony Garcia1-for-3, HR (4), RBI, RS, 2 K
.197/.301/.322 in 176 PA.
LF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-3, K
Sanchez is now the proud owner of a 9-game hitting streak.
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-3, 2 K
CF Grant Richardson0-for-3

RHP Drew Thorpe: (W, 8-1) 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K
Thorpe has allowed one run in his last 40.2 innings. Overall, he owns a 2.13 ERA in 84.1 IP (61 H, 24 R, 20 ER, 4 HR, 28 BB, 101 K). It is hard to believe his ERA was 4.26 at one point. Yes, he has earned a promotion – that goes without saying.
RHP Jack Neely: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.41 ERA (37.1 IP, 19 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 3 HR, 14 BB, 59 K). Kids like Neely should overpower this level, and he is.
RHP Luis Velasquez (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Tampa (40-41; 9-6 in the second half) (Defeated Dunedin, 6-1. They didn’t get off to a great start to 2023 but now they are on the brink of reaching .500)

2B Jared Serna0-for-3, RS, BB, K
He goes into the break hitting .285/.346/.481 in 347 PA (18 doubles, 1 triple, 14 HR, 51 RBI, 55 R, 28 BB (8.1%), 59 K (17%), 16-for-21 SB). There isn’t much to complain about with Serna – he has been everything you would want him to be. From the leadoff spot, he leads the FSL in home runs and RBI, while ranking third in runs scored.
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-3, BB
DH Ben Rice2-for-3, 2B (3), RS, BB
Rice was having no issues with High-A pitching before his injury – did we expect him to have any trouble here during his rehab stint? The rust is seemingly shaken off.
C Omar Martinez: 3-for-4, HR (6), 2 RBI, 2 RS
.237/.366/.374 in 238 PA (7 doubles,1 triple, 6 HR, 29 RBI, 29 R, 37 BB (15.5%), 72 K (30.3%), 5-for-6 SB). I love the walks – the strikeouts need improvement.
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
CF Daury Arias1-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, BB
The toolsy outfielder is hitting .232/.320/.337 in 278 PA.
LF Jake Palmer1-for-3, RBI, HBP
Palmer is 13-for-40 (.325) with three doubles and an 11/2 BB/K since his promotion.
1B Ronny Rojas0-for-4, 3 K
RF Felix Negueis0-for-4

RHP Baron Stuart: (W, 2-5) 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Somerset (13-9) (Lost to Binghamton, 5-1)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, 2 K
CF Jasson Dominguez0-for-4, 3 K
Don’t read into stuff you see on Twitter: Dominguez is not ready regardless of his walk rate.
C Austin Wells1-for-3, K
  C Carlos Narvaez1-for-1, 2B (5), CS (2)
LF Everson Pereira0-for-4
DH Anthony Seigler0-for-2, 2 BB, K
Seigler has eight walks in 48 plate appearances (16.7%). Last season, he compiled a 21.8% rate at Tampa/Hudson Valley.
RF Brandon Lockridge1-for-4, K

RHP Richard Fitts: (L, 1-3)  7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, HR
He allowed all four runs in the first inning. Impressive recovery, though the offense couldn’t quite make a game of it. He owns a 5.20 ERA in 27.2 IP (27 H, 16 R, 16 ER, 4 HR, 6 BB, 33 K). Solid enough peripherals.
RHP Justin Wilson1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Tanner Myatt1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
0.87 ERA (10.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 13 K)

Hudson Valley (15-8) (Knocked down Wilmington, 9-4)

CF Spencer Jones: 2-for-5, 2B (7), 2 RBI, RS
He has broken out of his 4-for-33 slump nicely. He is 11-for-31 (.355) since with two doubles, three triples, and two home runs.
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, 2B (3), RS, HBP
Vargas started the season 1-for-13. He is 16-for-51 (.314) since with all nine of his extra-base hits.
3B Caleb Durbin: 3-for-5, 2 2B (5), RBI, 2 RS, CS (1)
Durbin is now 14-for-15 in the stolen base department. He is 23 and played 32 games at this level (for the Braves organization) in 2022. Hence, I assume he will be on the promotion list early if he keeps this up.
DH Antonio Gomez0-for-3, BB
RF Anthony Garcia0-for-0, BB
  RF Grant Richardson1-for-3, RBI, K
C Rafael Flores0-for-3, BB
1B Spencer Henson1-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, BB
2B Ben Cowles2-for-4, RS, K
LF Aldenis Sanchez2-for-3, 2 3B (2), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Triples are a lot of fun! Sanchez had two all of last year, which brings up another point: Triples are so unpredictable!

LHP Clay Aguilar2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
In his 2021 debut season (he missed all of 2022), Aguilar made five starts among his 22 appearances. We’ll see if they are attempting to stretch him out again.
RHP Harold Cortijo2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
LHP Ryan Anderson: (W, 1-1) 2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Enrique Santana: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
9 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 9 K

SS Brenny Escanio0-for-5, 4 K
DH Daury Arias2-for-4, 3B (1), RS, K
C Agustin Ramirez0-for-3, BB
2B Jared Serna: 3-for-4, 2B (4), HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, SB (7)
.323/.421/.431 in 76 plate appearances. Serna did pop six home runs in 49 games last season, showing that there could be some pop in his smallish frame. He is a fun prospect to follow, given his ability to make a lot of contact (Only 6 strikeouts in 76 plate appearances (7.9%))
RF Anthony Hall: 1-for-4, RS, K
CF Nelson Medina0-for-3, RS, BB, K
LF Tayler Aguilar1-for-2, 2B (4), RS, SB (2)
LF Felix Negueis: 0-for-1, RS, BB
1B Omar Martinez2-for-4, 3B (1), 4 RBI
Martinez has four straight multi-hit games. This is not a personal best for RBI, as he drove home six in a game back on 8/19/21, when he was down in the DSL.
3B Ronny Rojas0-for-3, BB, 3 K

RHP Leonardo Pestana4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K

RHP Ocean Gabonia1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Mason Vinyard: (W, 1-1) 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
