Yankees MILB 8/21: Promotions!

News:

The Yankees have promoted top prospect Jasson Dominguez from Somerset to Scranton for the final month of the season. Remember that the Yankees did the same with Anthony Volpe last season and he took over the shortstop role for the big club in 2023. Can Dominguez make a similar jump? I wouldn’t rule it out. With Harrison Bader a free agent and left field still in shambles (more on that in a second), there can be a path for Dominguez.

Dominguez, who was hitting .198/.341/.343 after games of July 6th, has certainly turned it on since. He is hitting .350/.415/.535 (159 wRC+) in 36 games (176 plate appearances) since that date with a 10.2% BB and 19.9% K. He was first in the Eastern League in runs (83), fourth in RBI (66), third in stolen bases (37), and sixth in BB% (15.2%). The International League is known for its offense, but there could still be an adjustment period for Dominguez. He will be the second 20-year-old to make his debut in the International League this season, joining Tampa prospect Carson Williams. Williams joined the league on August 15th.

Speaking of the left field position, there is another candidate who is going to try to take the job. The Yankees have called up OF Everson Pereira from Triple-A Scranton. The 22-year-old has split time between Somerset and Scranton this season, hitting .300/.373/.548 in 343 plate appearances. Pereira’s BB% is OK (9.3%), but it is the K% we will need to watch. He has a 28.6% rate in 2023 and it has been an issue his entire minor league career. He is aggressive with a lot of power to tap into. I wouldn’t expect that to translate into a .300 hitter in MLB, but he has the bat speed and power to hit 25+ homers. Don’t be surprised if MLB pitchers feed him a steady stream of curves and sliders to see if they can take advantage of his aggressiveness.

Both of these moves make sense. Pereira deserves a chance to get accustomed to MLB pitching, and Dominguez has demonstrated that Double-A pitching is no longer giving him enough of a challenge.

In addition, the Yankees are bringing back IF Oswald Peraza. Everyone who is reading this knows his story so I don’t need to discuss it too much. I thought he was ready in 2022, and he did nothing to disprove that last September. He hasn’t performed at a high level in MLB in 2023, but it is time for him to get a consistent look.

As for others who may appear in 2023, it is hard to say. This is a year where the Yankees probably wish that rosters could expand to more than 28. C Austin Wells will be a talked-about name but I don’t think it is criminal if he sticks in Triple-A. They would need to find a 40-man slot for him, but they need to do that this winter anyway.

Scranton (57-60; 23-20 in the second half)

Day off. The Railriders have a hill to climb if they wish to make the playoffs. They are only four games behind Lehigh Valley for the second-half title, but there are four other teams ahead of them.

Somerset (67-46; 25-20 in the second half)

Day off. Somerset is already in the playoffs, courtesy of their first-half title. That said, the Patriots are in first place in the second half as well. If they pull off the Daily Double, the playoff berth will go to whoever comes in second place in the second half.

Hudson Valley (63-51; 24-24 in the second half)

Day off. Hudson Valley is already in the playoffs, courtesy of their first-half title.

Tampa (55-59; 24-24 in the second half)

Day off. Tampa isn’t going to make the playoffs in 2023, as they are seven games out of first place in the second half.

FCL Yankees (35-21) (Defeated the Blue Jays, 11-9)

2B Keiner Delgado3-for-5, HR (8), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K, 2 SB (36), CS (7)
The FCL ends this week, so we’ll see if they send Delgado to Tampa after that. He is hitting .294/.415/.490 in 234 PA with 35 walks, 30 strikeouts, and a 36-for-43 stolen base rate. He has 14 stolen bases in August.
SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-4, RS, BB, 2 SB (2)
Lombard is 4-for-8 with a pair of stolen bases and four walks. I tend to doubt they will send him to Tampa after this week.
RF Willy Montero1-for-3, SF, RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
1B Dylan Jasso2-for-5, 3B (1), HR (1), 3 RBI, 2 RS
.357/.478/.571 in 69 plate appearances for the 20-year-old. The undrafted free agent is another candidate for Tampa.
LF John Cruz4-for-5, 2B (6), RBI
Cruz is on the list of prospects that had little hype entering the season and put himself squarely on the prospect map. He is hitting .297/.381/.541 in 197 PA with ten home runs and 47 runs batted in. He will be 18 on August 29th and could debut in Tampa at that age in 2024.
DH Enmanuel Tejeda0-for-4, BB, 2 K
3B Hans Montero0-for-2, 2 RS, 3 BB, CS (1)
Montero is a bonus baby who is being asked to hit 8th. That is how insanely deep this roster is. He is hitting .264/.428/.416 in 229 plate appearances.

RHP Chalniel Arias3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
Since his promotion: 8.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 8 BB, 7 K

C Edison Vivas2-for-3, 2B (2), RBI, RS
.219/.318/.247 in 85 PA. He is 9-for-28 in August.
3B Anthony Pena0-for-1, RS, 2 BB, SB (5)
.247/.344/.383 in 93 PA. He has five doubles and a pair of home runs.

RHP Christian Zazueta4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
3.29 ERA (52 IP, 41 H, 21 R, 19 ER, 6 HR, 16 BB, 50 K). A solid year for the 18-year-old.
RHP Keninson Diaz (W, 5-0): 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

DSL Bombers (27-26) (Squeaked past the Twins, 8-7)

2B Gabriel Terrero1-for-3, 2B (9), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K, CS (6)
.299/.407/.533 in 162 PA (9 doubles, 1 triple, 7 HR, 27 RBI, 33 R, 22 BB, 35 K, 14-for-20 SB)
C Edgleen Perez2-for-4, 2B (8), RS, K, 2 SB (5)
3B Kevin Verde2-for-4, 2B (9), HR (4), 4 RBI, 2 RS, K
.258/.316/.433 in 133 PA for the 17-year-old. This is Verde’s debut season and he is certainly holding his own.
RF Ramiro Altagracia2-for-4, RS, K

RHP Sunayro Martina3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
3.86 ERA (28 IP, 19 H, 21 R, 12 ER, 1 HR, 23 BB, 34 K). This is a fairly typical DSL line.

Yankees MILB 6/17: Tyler Hardman Homers Twice

News:

Nothing to report.

Scranton (31-36) (Defeated Rochester, 8-7, in ten innings)

DH Estevan Florial2-for-6, HR (18), RBI, RS, 4 K
Florial has a 35-game on-base streak (8-game hitting streak. He has 6 HR during the streak). Of course, all four outs were via strikeout.
SS Oswald Peraza1-for-5, RS, BB, K, 2 SB (10)
LF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K
3B Andres Chaparro1-for-4, 2B (12), 3 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
A huge 3-run double as he tries to break out of his power slump. He is hitting .241/.315/.436 in 273 PA (11 doubles, 1 triple, 11 HR, 40 RBI, 41 R, 27 BB, 58 K)
C Carlos Narvaez2-for-5, HR (4), 2 RBI, RS, K
Narvaez has homered in back-to-back games. In June, he is 10-for-34 (.294) with a double and three home runs.
1B Rodolfo Duran1-for-5, 2 K
  PR-2B Jesus Bastidas0-for-0, RS
CF Brandon Lockridge2-for-5, 2B (3), RBI, K
Since promotion: 6-for-19

RHP Matt Bowman: (W, 3-0) 1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Aaron McGarity (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Somerset (38-23) (Defeated Altoona, 8-1)

DH Jasson Dominguez: 0-for-3, RS, BB, 3 K
BB: 18.6%; K: 26.4%
CF Harrison Bader1-for-4, 2 K
   1B Mickey Gasper0-for-0
C Austin Wells0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, HR (6), 3 RBI, RS
.243/.358/.383 in 265 PA (13 doubles, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 36 R, 38 BB, 54 K, 9-for-12 SB). The power is trending in the right direction lately.
3B Tyler Hardman: 2-for-4, 2 HR (13), 2 RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
Hardman’s second career 2-HR game. He has 39 HR and 132 RBI in 782 career PA (191 games)
2B Caleb Durbin0-for-0
Durbin has been a pleasant surprise in 2023. Let’s hope that whatever forced him to leave the game isn’t serious.
  PH-2B Max Burt1-for-4, 2 RS
1B Eric Wagaman2-for-3, RS, BB, K
Wagaman is 9-for-22 in June (2 doubles, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 7 R, 2 BB)
LF Jeisson Rosario0-for-3, BB
RF Aaron Palensky: 2-for-3, 2B (5), SF, 3 RBI
.289/.482/.579 in 56 PA since his promotion (5 doubles, 2 HR, 8 RBI). He has been a machine since day 1 this year.

RHP Clayton Beeter: (W, 6-2)  5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
2.08 ERA (60.2 IP, 44 H, 14 R, 14 ER, 3 HR, 31 BB, 76 K). The walks need to come down (as we all know) but he has otherwise been very impressive and could be in line for a trip to Scranton (Richard Fitts will be in that conversation as well)
RHP Alex Mauricio2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
3.93 ERA (18.1 IP, 16 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 17 K)
RHP Steven Jennings: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (36-26) (Lost to Rome, 1-0. Both teams had three hits during this duel)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-4
Jones increases his hitting streak to six (9-for-25; 2 doubles, 2 HR)
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, K
C Antonio Gomez0-for-2, HBP, Catcher’s Interference, K
.246/.316/.347 in 190 PA. After games of 5/27, he was hitting .195/.268/.268, so he is showing some progress.
LF Anthony Garcia1-for-4, 2 K
1B Spencer Henson0-for-4, K
DH Grant Richardson0-for-3, 2 K
RF Aldenis Sanchez0-for-3, 2 K
3B Marcos Cabrera1-for-3
2B Eduardo Torrealba0-for-3

RHP Matt Sauer2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K
Sauer tossed 46 pitches tonight as he continues his rehab stint.
LHP Ryan Anderson: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.16 ERA (31.1 IP, 27 H, 15 R, 11 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 37 K). One has to like the K/BB ratio. This is especially true when he walked 25 in 61.1 IP last season.
RHP Jack Neely:(L, 2-1)  2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
How the run scored: Reached base on a wild pitch after a strikeout, followed by a stolen base, going to third on a fly ball, and scoring on another wild pitch. Baseball!  Neely owns a 1.67 ERA in 27 IP (14 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 13 BB, 39 K)
RHP Nick Paciorek1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
2.70 ERA (20 IP, 13 H, 7 R, 6 ER 1 HR, 11 BB, 23 K)
RHP Mason Vinyard0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Tampa (28-33) (Defeated Clearwater, 7-2, in six innings)

SS Jared Serna1-for-4, 2B (12), 2 RBI, RS, K
.313/.374/.528 in 257 PA (12 doubles, 1 triple, 12 HR, 40 RBI, 43 R, 21 BB, 45 K, 15-for-19 SB). I am curious to see what the mid-season scouting reports look like because he is certainly answering any power concerns, at least in the lower levels.
CF Anthony Hall: 1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
C Agustin Ramirez0-for-1, 3 BB, SB (7)
Ramirez has five 3+ BB games this season (including a 5 BB effort). There is a reason why the Yankees have him hitting at the top part of the lineup. He is hitting .259/.404/.414 in 208 PA with more walks (41) than strikeouts (38).
2B Brenny Escanio1-for-4, RS, K
DH Matt Pita0-for-3, RS, K
RF Christopher Familia2-for-3, 3B (2), HR (8), 3 RBI, 2 RS, K
Familia’s hitting streak is up to 12. He is hitting .407/.485/.966 (that is his slugging, not his OPS) in 68 ridiculous plate appearances (5 doubles, 2 triples, 8 HR, 23 RBI, 19 R, 6 BB, 12 K). It will be noted that he is 23 years old and played 36 games here in 2022 – but he is doing what he needs to do to advance up the chain.
1B Omar Martinez1-for-3, RBI, RS, SB (4)
3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-2, 2B (8), RS, BB, SB (7)
.311/.395/.460 in 186 PA (8 doubles, 2 triples, 4 HR, 20 RBI, 32 R, 21 BB, 27 K, 7-for-7 SB). He might not be the most heralded prospect but when a kid consistently hits, I pay attention.
LF Felix Negueis0-for-2, 2 K

RHP Justin Lange4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, HR, 4 BB, 7 K
4.29 ERA (42 IP, 23 H, 24 R, 20 ER, 3 HR, 34 BB, 72 K). He is definitely living up to his label as a raw power arm. He hit 98.4 on the gun.
RHP Shane Gray (W, 1-2): 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
3.77 ERA (31 IP, 24 H, 14 R, 13 ER, 4 HR, 11 BB, 38 K). He started the season slow (7.94 ERA in seven April games) but has been tough to hit since.

FCL Yankees (7-3) (Doubled up the Phillies, 8-4)

DH Roderick Arias2-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K, SB (3)
Arias breaks out of his slump and hopefully, this starts a new upward trend for the ultra-talented teenager.
SS Hans Montero2-for-4, RS, BB, K
Montero had a .592 OPS in 2021 and a .606 OPS in 2022 (both seasons played in the DSL). Some may have already started to sour on him, but he is off to a hot start in 2023.
3B Enmanuel Tejeda1-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
Tejeda is hitting .345/.583/.586 in 48 plate appearances with 16 walks. I keep trying to tell you that the FCL and DSL are crazy as heck leagues.
CF John Cruz2-for-5, 2 HR (3), 6 RBI, 2 RS
Cruz has 14 RBI in his last two games. He is 10-for-37 with 19 RBI in nine games. Good luck finding anything that even resembles a reliable scouting report, but if he keeps this up, we’ll start seeing some.
C Manuel Palencia3-for-3, BB
Palencia’s first three hits of 2023 (3-for-14). He has yet to strike out in 2023 and has 25 in 301 career PA (8.3%).

RHP Zach Greene1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 0 BB, 3 K
This is a rehab appearance for the 26-year-old. Last season, for Scranton, he went 9-0 with a 3.42 ERA in 68.1 innings with a 33.3% K and 11.1% BB. The biggest issue was the 11 home runs allowed.
RHP Edwar Polimir (W, 1-0):  3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
Nice outing, but Polimir is already 22 years old.
LHP Miguel Pozo2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Edward Sanchez1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
Sanchez is listed as a SS. That said, he only played eight games in 2022 (his debut season), going 1-for-13 with a homer. Is he being transitioned to the mound?
RHP Osmany Fleitas1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Another kid listed as a SS who got on the mound today, it appears (he also made a pitching appearance back in 2021). What does it all mean? Who the heck knows? It’s the FCL, where you should be experimenting with this stuff I guess.

DSL Bombers (7-3) (Defeated the Rockies, 8-6, on a walk-off 2-run HR by Gabriel Terrero (he hit 2 HR today))

2B Gabriel Terrero3-for-5, 2 HR (4), 4 RBI, 3 RS, K, SB (2)
10-for-31 (2 doubles, 4 HR, 12 RBI). As of this writing, his four home runs are tied for the DSL lead.
C Johan Contreras1-for-4, RBI, RS, 2 K
SS Kevin Verde2-for-4, 2B (3), 2 RBI
6-for-24 with three doubles and 6 RBI in his debut season.
DH Michael Peres0-for-2, SF, RBI, RS, BB, K
Peres is listed as a pitcher – this is his first career game as a hitter.

RHP Joshan Lampson: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Alejandro Gomez: 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K
Gomez has pitched well over the past two years. He is turning 21 in August.

DSL Yankees (9-1) (Defeated the Marlins, 11-4. They have scored 94 runs in 10 games, which is still only good for 4th in this crazy league)

CF Brando Mayea2-for-4, 2B (2), 2 RBI, RS, K
Mayea gets back into the outfield today. He didn’t play the full game, but that is common when someone has missed some time.
C Jose Gonzalez2-for-6, 2B (4), 2 RBI, K
8-for-23 with four doubles and 11 runs batted in. He has an 8/4 BB/K
DH Ovandy Frias1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, 2 RS, K, SB (1)
RF-LF Andres Lacruz1-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, BB, 2 SB (6)
2B Jelson Coca2-for-4, 3B (1), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
LF Andry Javier2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB
11-for-27 (.407) with a pair of doubles and nine walks. It should be noted he is 19 and went 6-for-54 at this same level last year.

RHP Carlos Hampshire4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Yankees MILB 6/16: Juan Carela Ks 10 (Again)

News:

C Josh Breaux‘s rehab stint is finally over and he is on his way to Scranton. RHP Matt Sauer, who pitched one of the best games in the minors last season, will continue his rehab stint with Hudson Valley (pitched in a few games in the FCL).

Breaux joins Carlos Narvaez and Rodolfo Duran as catching options in Scranton, at least for as long as Ben Rortvedt is out.

Sauer will eventually end up in either Somerset or Scranton. He only made four starts for Somerset last year, so he will likely go there.

Scranton (30-36) (Defeated Rochester, 6-5)

LF Estevan Florial1-for-4, BB, K, CS (7)
Florial now has a 34-game on-base streak. He is hitting .310 with a 1.045 OPS.
SS Oswald Peraza1-for-4, HR (11), 2 RBI, RS, K
Peraza now has 579 Triple-A plate appearances. This is malpractice, folks.
CF Elijah Dunham: 2-for-4, HR (5), RBI, RS, K
Dunham has homered in back-to-back games and has hit safely in five of his last six games. It’s a start.
1B Andres Chaparro1-for-4, 2B (11), K
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-3, HR (3), RBI, RS, BB
Narvaez is 18-for-66 (.273) since his promotion. Last year was the only season where his average tanked (.194), though he did hit 11 home runs. The Yankees gave him a fairly long look in spring training as well.
DH Josh Breaux1-for-4
3B Jamie Westbrook1-for-4, HR (9), RBI, RS
Closing in on his fifth straight 10+ home run season.
2B Jesus Bastidas0-for-4, RS, K
RF Michael Hermosillo2-for-4, HR (7), RBI, RS

RHP Will Warren4 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 ER, HR, 2 BB, 6 K
6.29 ERA in 24.1 IP since his promotion. He has allowed 7 home runs (he didn’t allow any in 29.1 innings for Somerset)
LHP Josh Maciejewski2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP James Norwood1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
LHP D.J. Snelten: (W, 1-3)  1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
Snelten’s first win since 7/3/2018.
RHP Michael Feliz (S, 1): 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Since being signed: 4.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 HR, 3 BB, 5 K

Somerset (37-23) (Lost to Altoona, 6-2)

SS Trey Sweeney0-for-5, K
His 12-game hitting streak is snapped.
CF Harrison Bader1-for-4, K
  RF Aaron Palensky0-for-0
LF Jasson Dominguez2-for-4, HR (10), RBI, RS, K
.212/.358/.394 in 254 PA. Maybe this is the moment where he no longer flirts with the Mendoza line for the rest of the season.
C Austin Wells0-for-3, BB
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-4, K
3B Caleb Durbin1-for-3, HR (3), RBI, RS, BB
If Durbin is able to hit for even a hint of power, his prospect value goes up a bit. Does he *have* to hit for power? No. He can be a contact hitter who plays the infield positions and be very much useful.
RF-CF Jeisson Rosario2-for-3, BB, K
2B Max Burt0-for-4, K
DH Mickey Gasper2-for-4

RHP Richard Fitts: (L, 3-5)  6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 0 BB, 8 K
4.27 ERA (65.1 IP, 66 H, 31 R, 31 ER, 10 HR, 15 BB, 73 K). Last 5 starts: 2.25 ERA (32 IP, 28 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 5 BB, 37 K)
LHP Lisandro Santos1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Zac Houston1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (36-25) (Defeated Rome, 4-3)

DH Spencer Jones: 3-for-5, HR (9), RBI, 2 RS
Last 5 games: 9-for-21 (2 doubles, 2 home runs). He is up to .281/.332/.516 in 241 plate appearances.
SS Ben Cowles1-for-5, RBI, RS, K
The one hit was a timely one – walk-ff single in the 9th.
1B Rafael Flores0-for-3, BB
RF Anthony Garcia2-for-3, 2 2B (5), RBI, BB
C Antonio Gomez2-for-4, RBI
Gomez is up to .248 and is 8-for-18 during a 5-game hitting streak. He is 14-for-33 in June.
CF Grant Richardson0-for-4, 3 K
2B Luis Santos0-for-4
3B Marcos Cabrera1-for-4
LF Kyle Battle1-for-3, RS, HBP, CS (1)
