Last night, I said that you typically wait for a player to play a full game in the field before you put them on a “reinstate from rehab” watch.

I was wrong about C Jose Trevino, who is back with the Yankees after catching for seven innings last night. I don’t think that matters.

What does matter? How Trevino is used. He should be a true backup, not a platoon player.  Austin Wells has earned the job. Even the world’s biggest dolt can see that.

The Yankees are unlikely to leave him exposed and he might draw interest on the trade market. However, maybe they think he is a legitimate pitching option for some point in 2025.

.256/.431/.421 in 160 PA with as many walks as strikeouts (37). I am not going to overrate 17-year-old players in the DSL, but the catching pipeline seems to be on solid ground.

Yankees MILB 8/14: Jasson Dominguez Homers

News:

The Yankees placed one player (OF Jasson Dominguez) on the MLB Pipeline Top 100.

I have hinted at it this year: The system has taken a hit, due to three things:
1. Trades;
2. Injuries;
3. Down years.

Order those three things however you wish, but putting them together paints the most accurate picture.

Regarding injuries that impact the Top 100, RHP Chase Hampton is back on the injured list. After throwing 106.2 innings of 3.63 ERA ball last season, Hampton has tossed 18.2 innings this season. Ouch.

The bad luck doesn’t end there, as LHP Brock Selvidge was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Monday. Selvidge owns a 4.25 ERA in 84.2 innings for Somerset and was one of the Yankees’ representatives in this year’s Futures Game (along with Spencer Jones). No, he wasn’t hurt during that game as he didn’t pitch that day. Joining Selvidge on the 60-day list is RHP Kevin Stevens. Stevens, a 26-year-old reliever, owns a 2.54 ERA in 39 innings for Somerset with a 56/16 K/BB ratio.

Hampton had a chance to make his MLB debut this season. Selvidge is more of a 2025 candidate. This is how it goes with farm systems. For the Yankees, not much is going right this season.

The Yankees have released veteran infielder Josh VanMeter. VanMeter hit only .177/.335/.293 in 59 games for the Railriders.

You can look at this a few ways: He was amped, which increased his velocity. Or, you can ask: How hard will he be able to throw with maturity and being further away from his injury?

We are nearing August 1st and haven’t seen any “mass promotions” yet. That will likely happen after the deadline.

Because we no longer have short-season leagues, promotions come with cuts. It is a harsh reality. While Agustin Ramirez, Jared Serna, and Abrahan Ramirez were in no danger of being cut, Brian Cashman is considering many angles with his deals. The Rule 5 draft, the current 40-man roster, players they want to promote, etc.

As I said yesterday, it’s easy to get attached to prospects. If you read this report, I tend to have a positive slant while mixing in some reality (I think that is fair).

The best advice I can offer: The kids you love to follow will have better MLB opportunities elsewhere. Serna’s probability of making it to MLB increased when the trade was announced.

News:

Infielder Caleb Durbin returned to Somerset yesterday. Infielder Ben Cowles is heading to the injured list for Somerset today.

Cowles, who was HBP last night, is having a breakout season while playing three positions (2B/SS/3B). He is hitting .294/.376/.472 (140 wRC+) in 378 PA with 9 home runs, 51 RBI, 52 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases in 16 attempts. He owns a 10.3% BB and 17.7%. In 2023, he struck out at a 23.7% clip. With the MLB infield in flux, one could see him as an option for at least a utility role sometime in 2025.

Infielder Enmanuel Tejeda was moved to the full-season injured list for Tampa. Darn. Tejeda will finish the season with a .310/.353/.369 (108 wRC+) line for Low-A Tampa with a homer, 18 RBI, and 24 stolen bases in 28 attempts.

OF Jasson Dominguez was activated today and assigned to Scranton. It isn’t a rehab assignment on paper, but it is in reality.

In eight June games, he has walked once. A more aggressive approach is not necessarily a bad thing as there is such a thing as being too selective.

Or do you drop the catching and have him concentrate on first base, where there is a future (and current) MLB need? That decision will be made by someone smarter than me.

Somerset had only 6 hits and 1 walk in eight innings. Hence, only the first two hitters received 4 plate appearances. As for Cowles: .311/.383/.505 in 227 PA (20 doubles, 3 triples, 4 HR, 31 RBI, 32 R, 9-for-9 SB, 10.1% BB, 17.6% K). He hasn’t walked in ten games but is making contact and swatting doubles. We’ll take it.

That is more extra-base hits than he had in May (at the end of May, his OPS was .570 – now it’s .707). As for his splits: 8-for-45 without an extra-base hit against LHP and .237/.356/.432 vs. RHP.

Yankees MILB 6/8: Jasson Dominguez Goes Yard

News:

I want Anthony Rizzo to start scorching and hit 20 home runs the rest of the way. Why wouldn’t I? That helps my favorite team win the World Series.

However, 2024 is not going his way. Is it because of his 2023 concussion? His age? A combination? I don’t know. In April Rizzo hit .258/.321/.417 with five homers and 15 RBI. While this isn’t elite first base production, he still helped the offense as Aaron Judge went through a brutal slump.

His production has cratered in May/June, leading to a legitimate concern at first base.

The solution is not easy, and I won’t claim otherwise. Ben Rice is scorching the ball in Somerset/Scranton, leading to fans calling for him to take some at-bats in MLB. It’s a lot like the backup QB in the NFL – when the starter isn’t playing well, the unknown backup becomes the most popular player on the team. While this is a smaller scale, it’s similar: When an MLB player isn’t performing, fans instantly look towards the prospects as a solution. Just like how teams value their backup QB, we don’t know what the Yankees feel about Rice. Don’t take “reports” seriously – the front office isn’t going to talk down a prospect.

When does an organization “pull the plug”? When do they decide if Rice is worth trying out vs. looking at trade options? That’s not as easy of a question to answer as you think. You are replacing a well-regarded veteran with a track record, not Willie Calhoun or Franchy Cordero. It’s a delicate situation but a team should always do what helps the team win, even if it requires a tough conversation/decision.

I am writing this as tonight’s Yankees-Dodgers game is on. If Anthony Rizzo hits a game-winning home run, you can thank me later.

SS Dexters Peralta scored a run and drew a walk…3B Richard Matic and CF Gabriel Lara each had a pair of hits. The 5’9″ Lara is considered one of the fastest players in organized baseball and is an interesting long-term lottery ticket. Matic signed for $850,000. Baseball America noted that he was one of the youngest players in the 2024 class…17-year-old LHP Ronald Tejada was a bright spot on the hill (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K).

The Bombers won, 10-2. They drew 11 walks and compiled 10 hits. Walks are a good thing, but it is hard to take the insane walk rates in the DSL seriously.

CF Francisco Vilorio went 2-for-3 with an RBI, run scored, and walk. The 17-year-old is one of the bonus babies at this level. He was signed for $1.7 million…DH Richard Meran went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and 3 RBI. The 17-year-old played 13 games at this level in 2023…RF David Carrera went 2-for-4 with a  pair of doubles and runs scored. He added a stolen base. This is the 17-year-old’s debut season…C Queni Pineda drew three walks and scored four runs. He is another 17-year-old in his debut year…2B Christofer Reyes had two hits, two RBI, two runs, and two walks. He is 16 years old…LHP Franyer Herrera allowed one run in five innings. Jones has a 15-game on-base streak. The last two games have been the most encouraging. He is at .227/.318/.344 in 176 PA (2 days ago, he was at .205/.299/.295). 
DH Jasson Dominguez: 1-for-3, HR (4), RBI, 2 RS, BB
Dominguez has homered in back-to-back games and is making Double-A look silly during his 7-game hitting streak (12-for-28, 4 HR, 8 RBI, 7 R). I don’t know when the Yankees will use him in MLB this season, but he will be ready.
C Ben Rice: 3-for-4, 2 2B (8), RBI, SB (8)
.260/.380/.514 in 209 PA. On May 19th, his SLG slipped to .444. He has 4 doubles and 4 HR in 11 games since. I don’t think a prospect needs to spend much time in Triple-A, but there is a benefit in facing pitchers with MLB experience. Triple-A is abundant in those types.
