What do I think about the Yankees draft?

I don’t pretend to be something I am not. I don’t follow much college baseball and I sure as heck don’t pay attention to high school baseball – so how much can I really know?

It seems like a bit of a typical draft – perhaps a little more “meh” than some recent ones.  They will pay George Lombard Jr. an over-slot bonus, pay players without much leverage well below their slot, and mix in some of the kids they drafted beyond the 10th round. I will read up more on them as they make their debuts. Until then, I grade their draft somewhere between a 20 and an 80 on the 20-80 scale.

You are going to start to see Top 100 lists come out. As you get lower on those lists, remember that publications are choosing between several players for the last several slots. Is there a major difference between #97 and #105? Probably not – but it still is beneficial to find yourself on the list.

Baseball America had a nice write-up on Chase Hampton as one of their “Notable Risers.”  He went from unraked to 61st. Meanwhile, Prospects Live! didn’t rank him at all (and only ranked two Yankees – Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones).

The Yankees signed veteran cornerman Jake Lamb to a minor league deal. Lamb, who has experience playing all four corner positions, hit .216/.259/.353 with two home runs in 18 games for the Angels earlier this season. In 723 career games, he has a .235/.326/.427 (97 OPS+) line with 96 home runs. Most of the good stuff was compiled back in 2016-2017 when he hit 59 home runs and drove in 196 runs in 300 games for Arizona.

Peraza has nine walks in eight July games. He is only 6-for-30, so the walks have helped keep him afloat during a bit of a down period.

Pereira has hit safely in all five games since his promotion. He is 10-for-21, so this isn’t a situation where he is “simply” earning a hit a game.
DH Ben Rortvedt: 0-for-4, 2 K
3B Andres Chaparro: 0-for-4, 3 K
C Carlos Narvaez: 1-for-3, HR (7), 2 RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
Narvaez is hitting .273/.418/.463 in 153 PA since his promotion. If the goal truly is to keep Austin Wells behind the plate, he will need to catch most of the time when he comes to this level. Assuming he ever does come to this level.

He has the OPS up to .700, courtesy of three multi-hit games in his last four games played. He is 11-for-35 in July.

.263/.337/.470. Jones is starting to take some walks, as he has 19 in 30 June/July games. In April/May, he walked 11 times in 39 games. This is the point where you hope he starts putting the power/discipline together all at once.

Ramirez is 16-for-41 (.390) with seven doubles and two home runs since his promotion. That works.

Meanwhile, Familia has struggled since his promotion: 8-for-43 (.186) with a home run and 16 strikeouts.

Serna has a career night in a season filled with big nights. He is hitting .290/.349/.502 while leading the FSL in home runs (16) and RBI (58) while hitting leadoff all season. Is he due for a promotion soon?
CF Greg Allen: 1-for-2
Allen starts his rehab assignment.
  CF Daury Arias: 0-for-1, BB
C Ben Rice: 2-for-5, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS
The question with Rice is what you do with him once the rehab is complete – Hudson Valley has Antonio Gomez and Agustin Ramirez. You could move him to Somerset (given his age and dominance of High-A earlier this season), but Austin Wells is there. Rice can squeeze out some playing time at first base, as well.

Rodriguez was caught stealing 3B with two outs in the 9th, team down 14-12. That is what you call a teachable moment.

Serna has three multi-hit games in his last four games played and 24 multi-hit games this season (74 games played). He is hitting .288/.347/.486 in 343 PA with 14 home runs, 51 RBI, and 54 runs. As of this writing, he leads the FSL in home runs and runs batted in and is third in runs scored.
LF Jesus Rodriguez: 2-for-5, 2 HR (6), 3 RBI, 2 RS, K
Rodriguez’s first career multi-HR game. He hit six home runs in 94 games between 2019-2022 (remember that there wasn’t a season in 2020) and has six in 64 games this season. Rodriguez is hitting .291/.369/.439 in 256 PA. I will always say it: I don’t care what your prospect ranking is – if you hit, I pay attention. The Yankees have used him at C (11 starts)/1B (12)/3B (34)/LF (3).

He is hitting .311/.511/.516 in 21 games between here and Hudson Valley. He is here on a rehab stint.

Yankees MILB 7/6: Roderick Arias Homers Twice

RHP Zach Greene‘s rehab is over and is on his way to Scranton. Greene has some credibility in the baseball world, as the Mets chose him in last winter’s Rule 5 draft. The 26-year-old pitched to a 3.42 ERA in 68.1 innings with a 96/32 K/BB ratio for Scranton in 2022.

The Yankees claimed LHP Anthony Misiewicz off of waivers from the Tigers organization. He will take the 40-man roster spot that was occupied by RHP Jimmy Cordero. The Yankees will have another 40-man roster decision to make tomorrow when LHP Carlos Rodon is activated off of the 60-day injured list. As a follow-up to yesterday’s note on Oswald Peraza, it appears he is out of action due to illness. He isn’t hurt. He hasn’t been traded. They don’t have him on standby to replace Anthony Volpe. 

RHP Tanner Myatt was promoted to Scranton, as their pitching staff was depleted during yesterday’s doubleheader. Drafted in the 11th round back in the 2018 draft, Myatt is a hard-throwing pitcher with control and injury concerns. This year for Somerset, he has compiled a 5.16 ERA (5.20 FIP) over 22.2 innings with a 23.6% K and 18.9% BB. The likelihood is decent that he probably will head back down to Somerset once things settle down – but you never know.

Whenever Serna seems to go into a little slump, he seems to bounce right out of it. He is listed at 5’6″, yet has 21 doubles and 15 HR in 97 games over the last two seasons. This season, his triple slash is up to .316/.375/.515.

CF Anthony Hall: 2-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, K, CS (4)
Hall increases his hitting streak to 8 and is entering “Does he belong here anymore?” territory. He is 8-for-26 in June after hitting .338/.477/.471 in May.

LF Christopher Familia: 2-for-4, 2B (2), HR (5), 3 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, K, CS (1)
Familia: 5 HR in 7 games.

Rodriguez is now on a 7-game hitting streak (three straight multi-hit games)

Selvidge was stretched out to 100 pitches tonight. He is throwing in the mid-90s (hit 96.7 tonight) and generated 19 swing and misses. Season: 3.02 ERA (50.2 IP, 46 H, 21 R, 17 ER, 2 HR, 12 BB, 56 K)

Just like we said with Serna last year: If he taps into some power, his stock will go up. Without power? He still would have a chance because he can play up the middle positions.
SS Roderick Arias: 2-for-5, 2B (1), RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
If Arias develops to his potential, he will have above-average power for a shortstop. I think the Yankees will be patient with him, but they won’t keep a bonus baby down here any longer than he needs to be.
CF Willy Montero: 2-for-4, RBI, BB, K, CS (1)
The 18-year-old did enough in the DSL last season (.262/.396/.382; 16-for-20 SB) to earn a shot here in 2023. I don’t see any info on his signing bonus (again, likely an indicator that it wasn’t much) but the fact that he is a CF hitting third in the lineup tells you that the organization is impressed with something.
3B Hans Montero: 1-for-2, HR (1), RBI, RS, 3 BB
Montero, who was signed for $1.7 million (the highest bonus the Yankees handed out in 2021), struggled badly in the DSL. Now 19, they simply couldn’t throw him back down there for a third season. Something has to start clicking.
2B Enmanuel Tejeda: 0-for-3, 2 BB, K
Tejeda (18) hit ..289/.463/.493 in 46 DSL games last season. As I keep saying: DSL stats are wacky. However, if you don’t perform down there, you will probably die on the vine (unless you are someone like Montero, who they invested significant money in)
RF Dayro Perez: 0-for-2, RBI, RS, 2 BB, SB (1)
Perez, signed as an infielder, gets his first career start in the OF. He was given a taste of Low-A earlier this season, where he went 13-for-85 (.153) with a 2-for-3 stolen base rate.

RHP Ryan Harvey: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, HR
A strong professional debut for Harvey. Bobby Milone (on Twitter) pointed out that he was a college reliever so it appears this is another case of the Yankees drafting a relief pitcher and converting him to a starter. It really is not a bad strategy. It isn’t hard to convert them back to the bullpen.
RHP Jordarlin Mendoza (W, 1-0): 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K
Mendoza received some praise from Josh Norris of Baseball America. In 2022, down in the DSL, he pitched to a 2.95 ERA in 55 IP with a 77/19 K/BB ratio. Given that he tossed three innings today, he likely is still seen as a starting pitcher.

DSL Yankees (3-0) and the DSL Bombers (3-0) both won. The Yankees knocked off the Pirates Black, 8-5, while the Bombers knocked off the Mets Orange, 7-6. The Bombers overcame a 6-0 deficit entering the bottom of the 7th.

As I keep saying, DSL stats are insane. The Yankees’ eight runs came on 6 hits and *16* walks. C Josue Gonzalez and DH Luis Escudero each drew three walks while 3B Ovandy Frias doubled home two runs and drew a pair of walks. RHP Jorge Luna went 2.2 innings in his professional debut, allowing no runs on two hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts.

As for the Bombers, CF Ramiro Altagracia hit his first home run of the season. This is his third season at this level and he has done little of note offensively in his first two years…SS Kevin Verde (17) had one of the biggest knocks in the game: A 2-run double. He made his first professional hit memorable…DH Gabriel Lara (17) went 1-for-3 with an RBI, 2 runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base…
