Yankees MILB 9/10: Estevan Florial: 2 HR, 6 RBI

News:

As I suspected, veterans Matt Bowman and Anthony Misiewicz were called up today. We’ll see if this is permanent or temporary. This is a good time to get Will Warren and Clayton Beeter some innings in MLB, even as long relievers.

Beeter may have the inside track as he needs to be protected this winter while Warren does not need to be.

Scranton (67-68; 33-28 in the second half) (Crushed Columbus, 13-2)

LF Estevan Florial3-for-5, 2 HR (28), 6 RBI, 4 RS, BB, 2 K
Florial has hit two home runs four times this season. He sets a new personal best with the six RBI and has 79 RBI this season. The 28 homers lead the organization. He is building up his resume for other teams to look at for 2024. Should he get AB instead of someone like Jake Bauers at this point? Of course. Just reward the kid for playing well while being stuck in purgatory all year.
1B Andres Chaparro2-for-5, RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
Chaparro is up to 83 RBI, which continue to lead the organization.
RF Franchy Cordero2-for-6, 2 RBI, K
DH Jamie Westbrook1-for-4, SF, HBP, RBI
3B Jake Lamb1-for-3, RBI, 2 BB, K
C Josh Breaux1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS, BB
Breaux has 7 HR in 47 career Triple-A games.
CF Brandon Lockridge0-for-4, RS, BB
2B Wilmer Difo3-for-3, 4 RS, 2 BB, SB (20), CS (9)
SS Jesus Bastidas: 2-for-4, 2 RS, HBP, K

LHP Edgar Barclay: (W, 1-3)  5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
Barclay’s best performance since his promotion. He ties his personal best for strikeouts in a game (previously done on 8/13/2021)
RHP Aaron McGarity1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
LHP Josh Maciejewski1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Michael Gomez1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Zach McAllister1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (79-52; 37-26 in the second half) (Defeated Erie, 8-5. I have said a few times that their season ends today. Nope – they still have one regular season week before the playoffs)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, RS, BB, K, SB (17)
Sweeney is 2-for-15 since coming off of the injured list. Could he still get to Scranton for a week? Maybe.
C Ben Rice2-for-4, HR (15), RBI, RS, BB, K
At this level: .343/.404/.674 in 198 PA (12 doubles, 1 triple, 15 HR, 45 RBI, 35 R). Overall, Rice has 19 homers and 65 RBI in 68 games. One can only imagine what kind of season he could have had if not for injury.
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-5, 2B (13), RBI, RS, K
DH Grant Richardson: 3-for-3, HR (3), RBI, 2 RS, BB
Richardson, who hit .204/.306/.389 with 13 HR for Hudson Valley, is 12-for-35 with three homers since moving to Somerset. The 16 HR tie his personal best, set last year.
CF Elijah Dunham0-for-3, BB, K
2B Mickey Gasper1-for-4, HR (6), 3 RBI, RS
RF Jeisson Rosario1-for-4, HR (10), RBI, RS, K
.222/.360/.365 in 409 PA.
3B Max Burt1-for-4, RS, K, SB (17)
LF Aaron Palensky0-for-3, BB

RHP Richard Fitts (W, 10-5): 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 2 HR
3.58 ERA (146 IP, 127 H, 59 R, 58 ER, 22 HR, 42 BB, 152 K). One could worry a bit about his HR rate as a right-handed arm trying to get to Yankee Stadium, but his overall profile in 2023 is a solid one. I think the homers come down to the reports that he sometimes loses his command inside the strike zone.
RHP Bailey Dees1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
LHP Ryan Anderson1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
RHP Jesus Liranzo (S, 1): 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Hudson Valley (70-62; 31-35 in the second half)  (Lost to Jersey Shore, 10-9, in 11 innings. They begin their playoff journey on Tuesday)

RF Anthony Hall0-for-6, K
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-6, K
3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-5, RBI, RS, BB, K, 2 SB (6)
One of the reasons why they are likely moving him around the field is because he has some athleticism. This season, he stole 21 bases in 25 attempts between here and Tampa. You will see him in Somerset in 2024.
DH Antonio Gomez3-for-5, RBI, 2 RS, K
Nice to see Gomez have a strong effort on the final day of the regular season.
  PH-DH Luis Santos0-for-0, BB
2B Ben Cowles3-for-5, 2B (18), 2 RS, SB (23)
After a big August, Cowles cooled off in September so this game is much-needed heading into the playoffs.
1B Spencer Henson2-for-6, HR (14), 3 RBI, RS, 3 K
Henson finishes the season with 17 doubles, 14 HR, and 48 RBI in 82 games.
C Rafael Flores2-for-5, RS, BB, K
Flores tapped into some power towards the end of the season. It will be interesting to see if that continues into 2024.
LF Jared Wegner1-for-3, RBI
LF Kyle Battle: 1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, RS, K
Not a bad way to end your campaign.
CF Cole Gabrielson2-for-4, RBI, RS, HBP, CS (2)
At this level: 9-for-34 with two doubles and a home run.
  PH Marcos Cabrera0-for-1, K

LHP Brock Selvidge5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
At this level: 3.58 ERA in 50.1 IP (44 H, 22 R, 20 ER, 2 HR, 14 BB, 46 K). Overall, Selvidge compiled a 137/35 K/BB over 127.2 innings. The improvement in the walk rate is very encouraging.
RHP Shane Gray1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Leonardo Pestana1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Osiel Rodriguez2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Rodriguez’s High-A debut. He will be here for the playoffs as well.
RHP Mason Vinyard: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Juan Crisp: (L, 0-1)  1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
Crisp isn’t a pitcher – this is life in the minors. You aren’t going to change your pitching plans just because it is a tied-up game in extras. This is part of the reason why the minors started using ghost runners years ago.

Tampa (61-69; 30-34 in the second half) (Lost to Lakeland, 3-1. Their season is over)

DH George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-4, RS, K
It is safe to say that his first exposure to professional pitching went well. Not including the FCL playoffs, he hit .311/.466/.356 in 58 plate appearances with 13 walks and 12 strikeouts. During the playoffs, he went 3-for-11 with an RBI and two runs scored. He won’t be 19 until next June.
RF Jackson Castillo1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
Castillo went 7-for-38 (.184) at this level with a homer and six runs batted in.
3B Kiko Romero0-for-4, 4 K
Romero hit .216/.350/.382 in 123 PA at this level with three home runs, 20 walks, and 38 strikeouts.
1B Josh Moylan0-for-4, 3 K
Romero and Moylan certainly hoped for a better final day of the season. It will all be forgotten tomorrow. Moylan hit .241/.386/.313 in 101 PA with two homers, 16 walks, and 28 strikeouts.
C Omar Martinez1-for-4
Martinez’s first experience in a full-season league went well. In 105 games (444 plate appearances), the 21-year-old left-handed bat hit .251/.367/.445 (16 doubles, 1 triple, 18 HR, 71 RBI, 66 R, 67 BB (15.1%), 110 K (24.8%), 8-for-9 SB).
SS Brenny Escanio2-for-4, 3B (5), K
.224/.335/.296 in 476 PA (10 doubles, 5 triples, 3 HR, 36 RBI, 57 R, 68 BB, 119 K, 21-for-27 SB)
LF Daury Arias0-for-2, 2 BB, K
CF Tayler Aguilar0-for-3, BB, 2 K
2B Jose Colmenares0-for-3, K

RHP Jackson Fristoe4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Fristoe’s arm is tantalizing. As others have said, it may be more of a bullpen arm down the road but there is zero harm in trying to see if you can develop him into a starter. Between here and the FCL, he had a 45/28 K/BB over 36.2 IP.
LHP Pablo Mujica2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Yoljeldriz Diaz (L, 0-1): 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Ocean Gabonia1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

FCL Yankees (35-22; 1-2 in the playoffs)

They lost to the Braves in the championship series. Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (33-19)

Their season is over, as they missed the playoffs by a half-game.

DSL Bombers (27-26)

Their season is over.

Yankees MILB 9/9: Jesus Rodriguez Hits a Slam

News:

The Yankees sent RHP Ron Marinaccio and LHP Matt Krook back down to Scranton after today’s game, meaning that two new pitchers are on their way to the Bronx. People are hoping for RHP Clayton Beeter, but he pitched on Friday. It is possible they will bring up a temporary filler before giving Beeter a roster spot once rested.  RHP Will Warren is another popular pick – he last pitched on September 7th, so he wouldn’t be available tomorrow. RHP Matt Bowman is a veteran on the 40-man – they could certainly bring him up as a warm body until someone else is ready. The same is true for LHP Anthony MisiewiczThe “Big 3” (literally) relievers down in Somerset (Bailey Dees, Danny Watson, Jack Neely) would be intriguing but I am not sure if they are going down that path. RHP Chase Hampton is shut down for the season and RHP Richard Fitts and Drew Thorpe appear to be winding down (Thorpe more than Fitts).

I guess what I am saying is that I have no idea who the two mystery pitchers will be. If it is any of the veterans listed above, it will likely (hopefully) be temporary until others are rested.

Scranton (66-68; 32-28 in the second half) (Lost to Columbus, 5-3)

LF Estevan Florial1-for-4, HR (26), RBI, RS, K
Florial’s HR was a lead-off blast. He ties Tyler Hardman (who has been out for a while) for the organization’s home run lead. Scranton’s season continues for a few more weeks (while everyone else ends tomorrow), so he has a good chance to win the HR title.
2B Jamie Westbrook2-for-4, RS, SB (6)
C Carlos Narvaez0-for-4, 2 K
3B Andres Chaparro2-for-4, RS, 2 K
.252/.336/.457 in 544 PA (21 doubles, 2 triples, 24 HR, 82 RBI, 76 R, 60 BB, 113 K).
1B Mike Lamb1-for-2, BB, HBP
DH Rodolfo Duran0-for-3, RBI, HBP
RF Michael Hermosillo0-for-4, RBI, 2 K
CF Brandon Lockridge1-for-4, K, CS (3)
SS Jesus Bastidas1-for-4, 3 K

RHP Mitch Spence7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 9 K
4.56 ERA (150 IP, 151 H, 84 R, 76 ER, 28 HR, 47 BB, 144 K). Imagine having to throw 150 innings in this league – poor kid. But he certainly has held his own.
RHP Zach Greene (L, 2-1): 1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, HR

Somerset (78-52; 36-26 in the second half) (Lost to Erie, 5-3)

CF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, BB, 2 K, SB (22)
Dunham is up to 34 stolen bases in 41 attempts between here and Scranton.
DH Spencer Jones2-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K, SB (5), CS (2)
Jones joins Brandon Lockridge and Jasson Dominguez in the organization’s 40 SB club (all three have exactly 40 stolen bases in the minors. Dominguez added an MLB stolen base today). Anyway, Jones has three multi-hit games in his last four games as he tries to finish his season strongly.
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-4, BB, SB (8)
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-4, 2B (5), RS, BB, K, SB (3)
Ramirez is at .216/.278/.310 in 126 PA since his promotion.
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-4, 2 K
RF Grant Richardson0-for-2, BB, HBP, SB (2)
LF Jeisson Rosario2-for-4, 2B (17), RBI, RS, SB (11)
SS Max Burt1-for-4, 2B (11), RBI, K
3B Eduardo Torrealba0-for-3, BB, K

RHP Yoendrys Gomez4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K
3.69 ERA (61 IP, 46 H, 27 R, 25 ER, 6 HR, 33 BB, 71 K). Gomez’s issue has always been injuries – he has been with the organization since 2017, yet this year’s 61 innings are a new personal best. A crucial spring training is upcoming in 2024.
RHP Tanner Myatt1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
RHP Carlos Gomez1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Alex Mauricio1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
RHP Mickey Gasper0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Gasper (a C/1B who has played some 2B this year) with his third professional pitching appearance (he had two in 2019)

Hudson Valley (70-61; 31-34 in the second half)  (Split a doubleheader with Jersey Shore)

Game 1 (Won, 2-0)

SS Jared Serna0-for-3, K
2B Alexander Vargas: 0-for-2, BB, K
DH Christopher Familia0-for-3, 2 K
Between Tampa and Hudson Valley: .307/.378/.617 in 294 PA (11 doubles, 2 triples, 22 HR, 63 RBI, 57 R, 25 BB, 61 K). He was insane for Tampa but has hit well enough here to keep your attention.
C Antonio Gomez0-for-2, RS, BB, K
.230/.286/.322 in 349 PA (18 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR, 32 RBI, 32 R, 21 BB, 111 K). It wasn’t long ago when Gomez was their most tantalizing catching prospect. Some catchers are late bloomers, so maybe he can find some discover some offense in his game.
1B Spencer Henson1-for-3, RS
RF Jared Wegner0-for-2, BB, K
CF Cole Gabrielson2-for-3, RBI, K
3B Marcos Cabrera1-for-3, RBI
LF Kyle Battle0-for-1, BB

RHP Cam Schlittler (W, 1-0): 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K
Schlittler’s first professional win. Congrats!  This season (professional debut), he pitched to a 4.11 ERA in 46 innings between the FCL/Tampa/Hudson Valley with a 51/20 K/BB. He is a 6’6″ 22-year-old out of Northeastern.
RHP Anderson Munoz1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
At this level: 12.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 18 K.
RHP Cole Ayers (S, 1): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Since promotion: 18 IP, 11 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 6 BB, 22 K. Ayers (a 2021 draftee) is 24 years old.

Game 2 (Lost, 8-5)

SS Jared Serna1-for-2, 2B (7), 2 RS, 2 BB, SB (10), CS (2)
Serna has 28 doubles and 29 stolen bases between here and Tampa. Tomorrow is his last chance to reach 20 home runs. By the way, though it is widely assumed that Serna is a 2B long-term (60 starts there in 2023), he has 51 starts at shortstop.
DH Alexander Vargas: 2-for-3, 2B (18), RBI, RS, BB
.206/.249/.345 in 441 PA. Vargas looked like he might be breaking out earlier this season but his final stat line is going to look quite similar to his 2022 line in Tampa.
C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-3, HR (3), 4 RBI, RS, BB, K
A grand slam for Rodriguez, who continues to hit. He is up to .365 (1.025 OPS) in 103 PA since his promotion and .312/.400/.454 in 454 plate appearances overall. Quite a season.
1B Rafael Flores0-for-3, BB, K
3B Ben Cowles0-for-3, K
RF Jared Wegner0-for-3, K
CF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, 2 K
2B Luis Santos1-for-2, RS, BB, SB (10)
LF Kyle Battle0-for-3, K

RHP Baron Stuart: (L, 2-4) 4 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, HR
RHP Harrison Cohen1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Clay Aguilar1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K

Tampa (61-68; 30-33 in the second half) (Lost to Lakeland, 4-1)

SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-3, 2 BB, CS (2)
At this level: 7-for-29 (.241) with a double and eight walks (.405 OBP). Very small sample size in 2023, but Lombard doesn’t seem to be overwhelmed.
2B Brenny Escanio1-for-4, 2B (10), RS, BB, 2 K, SB (21)
.221/.333/.289 in 472 PA with 21 stolen bases in 27 attempts.
1B Kiko Romero0-for-4, BB
DH Garrett Martin2-for-3, 2B (6), RBI, HBP
13-for-65 (.200) with six doubles and seven runs batted in. The Yankees placed the 23-year-old at this level immediately after signing him (undrafted signee)
CF Nelson Medina1-for-3, BB, K
LF Daury Arias1-for-4
RF Tayler Aguilar0-for-4, K
3B Beau Brewer2-for-4
.280/.410/.293 in a weird 195 PA sample. Brewer (obviously) hasn’t hit for power (two doubles) but he has 35 walks (17.9%) while striking out 12 times.
C Manuel Palencia1-for-4

RHP Sebastian Keane: (L, 0-2)  3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
He threw 47 pitches tonight. He came out of the bullpen down in the FCL before two late starts here. This is essentially a get-your-feet-wet type of season.
RHP Matt Keating1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
3.64 ERA in 64.1 IP (60 H, 32 R, 26 ER, 6 HR, 36 BB, 92 K). Keating doesn’t throw hard (his out pitch appears to be a slider, and he features it as much as he does the fastball)
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
2.92 ERA in 49.1 IP (35 H, 17 R, 16 ER, 1 HR, 28 BB, 58 K). On pitch profile alone, he might just be the left-handed version of Keating. I will note that arsenals can change as players work their way through a system.
RHP Alex Bustamante1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Nolberto Henriquez0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
As I mentioned last time, Henriquez throws a lot of sinkers. Tonight, he averaged 95.4 MPH with that pitch – he is a bit of a project with uneven results, but I can imagine that the organization would like to work with someone who can throw a sinker in the mid-90s. We’ll see.

FCL Yankees (35-22; 1-2 in the playoffs)

They lost to the Braves in the championship series. Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (33-19)

Their season is over, as they missed the playoffs by a half-game.

DSL Bombers (27-26)

Their season is over.

Yankees MILB 9/5: Jared Serna (3 Hits) Increases Hitting Streak to 14

News:

SS Trey Sweeney was activated today for Somerset. IF Caleb Durbin, who left the game early the other day, was placed on the injured list.

Scranton (65-66; 31-26 in the second half) (Lost to Columbus, 6-5)

CF Estevan Florial: 2-for-4, 2B (22), HR (25), 3 RBI, RS, BB, K, SB (24)
.279/.378/.550 in 458 PA (22 doubles, 4 triples, 25 HR, 72 RBI, 76 R, 64 BB, 136 K, 24-for-34 SB)
2B Jamie Westbrook1-for-5, RBI, K
1B Andres Chaparro1-for-3, RS, BB
RF Franchy Cordero0-for-3, BB, K
C Rodolfo Duran1-for-4, 2 K
3B Jake Lamb1-for-4, RBI, K
DH Josh Breaux0-for-3, BB, K, SB (1)
Breaux is 5-for-5 stealing bases in his career (307 games). That is my random, useless fact of the night.
SS Wilmer Difo0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
LF Brandon Lockridge1-for-3, 2 RS, BB, 2 K, 2 SB (23)
Lockridge joins Jasson Dominguez in the organization’s 40 SB club (he had 17 with Somerset). With Durbin injured and Dominguez onto bigger things, Lockridge has an easy lane to the SB title. In a league where teams are looking for more “athleticism” and base stealing, I must wonder if Lockridge wil find himself valued highly this winter.

LHP Edgar Barclay5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
Since promotion: 7.45 ERA (29 IP, 28 H, 27 R, 24 ER, 24 BB, 27 K, 9 HR)
RHP Zac Houston0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
LHP Anthony Misiewicz (L, 3-2): 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Matt Bowman1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Somerset (76-50; 34-24 in the second half) (Lost to Erie, 9-7, in ten innings. Erie (71-55) plays in the opposite division in the Eastern League. Both teams have a chance to win both the first and second half titles)

SS Trey Sweeney0-for-3, 2 K
Sweeney’s first game since August 2nd. It is good to see that he was able to get back before the season ends. He is hitting .248/.363/.416 in 432 PA (18 doubles, 2 triples, 13 HR, 49 RBI, 62 R, 59 BB, 85 K, 16-for-23 SB)
  SS Eduardo Torrealba: 2-for-3, 2B (4), RBI, K
CF Spencer Jones0-for-5
Jones is 3-for-27 with a homer since his promotion.
C Ben Rice2-for-3, 2B (10), 2 BB, CS (2)
Rice was in a little 2-for-16 slump entering tonight, so this was a nice way to break out of that.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-4, BB, 2 K
Rumfield is back from his rehab stint.
LF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, 2 RS, BB, K, SB (19)
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-4, K
2B Anthony Seigler1-for-4, RBI, RS, BB
DH Jeisson Rosario: 2-for-4, 2B (16), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
3B Max Burt: 3-for-5, HR (12), 4 RBI, 2 RS, K
Burt with his fifth 3+ RBI game this season. He also has three 3+ hit games.

RHP Richard Fitts6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR
3.51 ERA in 141 IP (122 H, 56 R, 55 ER, 20 HR, 38 BB, 147 K). He allowed two runs in both the second and third innings but closed strong with three scoreless innings.
RHP Jesus Liranzo2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Jack Neely (L, 1-2): 2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 2 HR
An error in the 9th and the ghost runner in the 10th didn’t help his cause, but he did allow those two homers. At this level: 2.65 ERA in 17 IP (11 H, 9 R, 5 ER, 4 HR, 3 BB, 24 K)

Hudson Valley (69-58; 30-31 in the second half) (Destroyed Jersey Shore, 13-0)

RF Anthony Hall0-for-5, RBI
2B Jared Serna: 3-for-4, 2B (6), 2 RBI, 3 RS, BB, 2 SB (9)
Serna increases his hitting streak to 14 by compiling his 11th 3+ hit game (first with Hudson Valley). Between here and Tampa, he has 27 doubles and 28 stolen bases (.286/.350/.468 in 548 PA). It isn’t impossible that we will see him start 2024 in Double-A. I bet they give him a few weeks or so down here though.
LF Jesus Rodriguez: 2-for-3, 3B (1), RBI, RS, 2 BB, SB (4)
Since his promotion: .378 (28-for-74; 5 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 15 RBI, 11 R, 15 BB, 13 K, 4-for-5 SB). He has three multi-hit games in his last four games played.
C Antonio Gomez1-for-5, 2B (18), 2 RBI, RS, K
SS Alexander Vargas: 2-for-5, 2 2B (17), 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (16)
Vargas at his best is a disrupter. Consistency has been an issue, though.
3B Ben Cowles0-for-2, 2 RS, 3 BB, 2 SB (22)
DH Christopher Familia: 1-for-4, SF, RBI, RS, K
1B Rafael Flores2-for-4, HR (8), 4 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Flores has three home runs in his last seven games.

Fristoe maxed out at 98.2 MPH (averaged 95.2). If a kid can throw this hard, you can work with him to try to figure out everything else.

Yankees MILB 8/22: Jasson Dominguez Crushes His Triple-A Debut

News:

Nothing new.

Scranton (58-60; 24-20 in the second half) (Destroyed Lehigh Valley, 14-1)

This is a big series against Lehigh Valley, the team they are chasing for the second-half title. It is a logjam, however, as four teams are between Lehigh Valley and Scranton in the standings.

LF Estevan Florial: 1-for-4, 2B (17), 3 RBI, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
Florial is at .291 with 17 doubles, 4 triples, 23 HR, 62 RBI, and 66 runs scored.

LHP Josh Maciejewski: (W, 3-0) 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Maciejewski entered the game with the bases loaded and one out. He allowed only one of the runners to score.
RHP Zac Houston: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Aaron McGarity1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

2B Caleb Durbin1-for-4
  2B Eduardo Torrealba0-for-1
C Ben Rice: 2-for-4, HR (10), 4 RBI, RS
Walk-off grand slam! Rice is hitting .324 since his promotion with ten home runs and 33 RBI in 27 games. Overall, Rice has 14 homers and 53 RBI in 52 games. His bat has been off-the-charts awesome this year. I can only imagine where he would be if he didn’t have a long-term injury.

RHP Jack Neely: (W, 1-1)  3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Forget about that run, as it was the ghost runner. Since promotion: 2.53 ERA (10.2 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 13 K). Overall, Neely owns an 87/19 K/BB over 59.1 innings.

Hudson Valley (63-52; 24-25 in the second half) (Lost to Aberdeen, 3-1)

RHP Cam Schlittler: (L, 0-1)  4 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 5 ER, HR, 0 BB, 7 K
A mixed bag, but when you are dealing with a young pitcher in his debut season, it is important to see the positives. In this case, 7 strikeouts and no walks in four innings is a positive!
RHP Matt Keating2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
3.47 ERA (57 IP, 54 H, 28 R, 22 ER, 5 HR, 30 BB, 83 K). He is certainly getting a lot of work in this season.
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Osiel Rodriguez2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Since promotion: 13.1 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 12 BB, 18 K. He allowed four of those runs (without recording an out) in one of his outings.

FCL Yankees (35-22) (Lost the season finale to the Tigers, 7-6. They are in the playoffs, which start on Thursday and continue into the weekend. If anyone is going to be promoted, it would happen next week)

SS Keiner Delgado1-for-4, RS, BB, K
.293/.414/.485 in 239 PA with eight home runs and 36 stolen bases. Last year, in the DSL, he hit .310/.504/.506 in 238 PA with three home runs and 34 stolen bases. You can’t complain about either season and I hope they give him a taste of Low-A to close out the season.
DH George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, K, SB (3)
Lombard (5-for-12, 5 BB, 2 K) hit safely in all four of his games.
LF Jackson Castillo1-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB, K, SB (1)
Castillo’s first career SB. He is 8-for-29 (11 walks, 10 strikeouts) in nine games
1B Dylan Jasso3-for-5, 4 RBI
.377/.486/.574 (23-for-61, 7 doubles, 1 HR, 20 RBI, 15 R, 11 BB, 5 K). The 20-year-old definitely earned a chance to move up to Tampa.
RF John Cruz1-for-5, K, CS (4)
.294/.376/.531 in 202 PA (6 doubles, 3 triples, 10 HR, 47 RBI, 28 R, 22 BB, 44 K, 9-for-13 SB). Cruz is only 17 (18 on 8/29) so I don’t know if they will move him to Tampa.
3B Enmanuel Tejeda3-for-4, RBI, BB, SB (24)
.307/.465/.458 in 217 PA (4 doubles, 3 triples, 5 HR, 30 RBI, 37 R, 44 BB, 44 K, 24-for-30 SB). While Delgado is 19, Tejeda is 18. I have no problem moving any prospect up to Tampa if they have earned it, regardless of age.
3B Hans Montero0-for-5, 2 K, SB (17)
.257/.419/.404 in 234 PA (6 doubles, 3 triples, 5 HR, 23 RBI, 41 R, 44 BB, 48 K, 17-for-18 SB). The bonus baby from a few years ago started hot in 2023 but cooled off. The overall stat line is solid and encouraging, however.
CF Wilson Rodriguez0-for-2, RS, BB, 2 K
.220/.360/.439 (9-for-41, 3 doubles, 2 HR, 11 RBI, 5 R, 8 BB, 13 K). The left-handed bat is 18, drafted in the 17th round in this year’s draft. There is no chance they are sending him to Tampa – this season was all about getting his feet wet.
C Peter Serruto0-for-2
The Yankees signed the 23-year-old Indiana graduate (he also went to Rutgers) on August 2nd. This is his debut.
  PH-C Diomedes Hernandez0-for-0, RS, 2 BB
The 18-year-old didn’t play much in 2023 (3 games; 1-for-5).

LHP Edwar Polimir (L, 4-1): 1.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Yoljeldriz Diaz1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K
10.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 17 K. Diaz is 22 and has been in the system since 2019. That said, he has barely pitched (this was only his 26th career game)
LHP Pablo Mujica1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Sebastian Keane2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
1.71 ERA (26.1 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 16 BB, 35 K). The 22-year-old predictably pitched well here and should make his way to Tampa.
LHP Miguel Pozo1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

DSL Yankees (33-19)

Their game against Mets Orange was canceled due to a tropical storm. The game won’t be made up, and their season is over. They missed out on the division title by 0.5 games and a wild-card spot by one game in the loss column.

DSL Bombers (27-26)

Their game against the DSL Marlins was canceled due to a tropical storm. The game won’t be made up, and their season is over.

Yankees MILB 7/30: Agustin Ramirez Collects 3 Hits

News:

There hasn’t been much smoke surrounding the Yankees when it comes to the trade deadline.

There is talk about Gleyber Torres attracting the attention of the Marlins again. Since this is the second year in a row, perhaps they will give up something of real value for him. If I sound lukewarm, it is because I am. I need to see it to believe it.

There isn’t a magic bullet waiting in Triple-A to save this team. I like Oswald Peraza but the Yankees made their feelings known this past week. They aren’t going to use Estevan FlorialEverson Pereira and Austin Wells are the closest kids they have, but they insist on Wells catching and Pereira needs time. Andres Chaparro is a player who may provide some instant offense but he has defensive limitations. I have yet to see an evaluator who thinks he is playing third base in MLB.

I honestly don’t know what the Yankees will or can do. They have less than 48 hours to show their cards. My guess is that they will show 8-high, for those who know poker.

Scranton (46-53; 12-13 in the second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 11-8. Buffalo scored at will over the weekend)

RF Estevan Florial2-for-5, HR (23), 2 RBI, RS, K
.297/.390/.592 in 372 PA (16 doubles, 4 triples, 23 HR, 59 RBI, 63 R, 50 BB (13.4%), 109 K (29.3%), 18-for-28 SB). While he hit only three home runs in July, he finishes the month 22-for-68 (.324) with ten walks and (of course) 24 strikeouts. If it feels like he earns a hit just about every time he makes contact, you aren’t alone. His BABIP numbers continue to be insane. Entering today, his BABIP was .376. His career mark is .365. We are well beyond the point of using a sample size excuse.
SS Oswaldo Cabrera1-for-4, BB, 2 K, SB (2)
LF Everson Pereira0-for-5, 2 K
Everyone has a rough day eventually. Pereira is hitting .325/.366/.584 in 82 PA since his promotion though it comes with a 3/24 BB/K.
DH Franchy Cordero: 1-for-3, 2B (10), RS, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (4)
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-5, RS, 2 K
At this level: .272/.400/.456 in 195 PA. Narvaez goes 15-for-55 (.273) in July with three doubles and three home runs.
3B Jamie Westbrook: 2-for-4, 2B (12), HR (15), 2 RBI, RS, K
Westbrook is four home runs away from matching his season best (19 in 2018)
1B Rodolfo Duran: 2-for-3, HR (8), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Snaps a 1-for-17 slump
53 games in Somerset, 2022: .222/.266/.414 with 9 HR and 33 RBI

2B Wilmer Difo1-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, RS

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-3, RS, BB, HBP, SB (15)
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-3, RBI, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (29)
Dominguez, who stole 11 bases in July, is now tied with Caleb Durbin for the organizational lead. Durbin has been out of action forever. I can only imagine where his total would be if he stayed healthy.
1B Ben Rice0-for-4, BB, 2 K
CF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, 2 K
3B Max Burt1-for-3, BB, K, SB (12)
2B Mickey Gasper: 1-for-4, 2 K
C Anthony Seigler1-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RS
DH Jeisson Rosario1-for-2, 2B (13), RBI, RS, SAC
I think I have typed “SAC” three or four times in the last two years – and I am not even joking. Anyway, Rosario has swatted nine doubles in his last 12 games.
RF Aaron Palensky: 2-for-4, 2B (7), HR (5), 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
Palensky really needed this. After an amazing start with Hudson Valley, he has struggled at times with Somerset. He finishes July 6-for-43.

RHP Matt Sauer5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
Nice performance by Sauer, who is up to 79 pitches. One has to assume he is ready to fully stretch out now.

RHP Danny Watson (S, 3): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Watson continues to motor along…he has a 1.25 ERA in 21.2 IP since his promotion (9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 9 BB, 25 K)

Hudson Valley (54-42; 15-14 in the second half) (Shut down Hickory, 6-0)

2B Ben Cowles0-for-4, RS, BB, K, SB (13)
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-5, HR (8), RBI, RS, 2 K
.212/.261/.358 in 326 PA (10 doubles, 5 triples, 8 HR, 44 RBI, 42 R, 20 BB, 86 K, 10-for-15 SB). Vargas ties his personal best in home runs in 25 fewer games. The improvements between 2023 and 2002 are marginal, overall.
C Agustin Ramirez: 3-for-5, RS, SB (2)
Since promotion: .407/.455/.747 in 99 PA (10 doubles, 7 HR, 17 RBI, 18 R, 7 BB, 12 K, 2-for-2 SB). In 22 games at this level, he has multiple hits 12 times. He has failed to reach base in only one game. This isn’t some 23-year-old who is suddenly crushing young pitchers. He is only 21.
DH Christopher Familia0-for-2, 2 BB, HBP
Not known for his extreme plate discipline, Familia has four walks in his last two games. That brings his percentage up to 8.06% this season.
1B Spencer Henson: 4-for-4, 2B (14), 2 HR (13), SF, 4 RBI, 2 RS
.272/.358/.498 in 274 PA (14 doubles, 13 HR, 42 RBI, 45 R, 25 BB, 65 K).

Tampa (46-50; 15-15 in the second half) (Defeated Dunedin, 8-3)

1B Omar Martinez: 2-for-5, HR (12), 5 RBI, 2 RS
Martinez finishes off a scorching July with a bang. He drove home four runs in a game three times this month (26 RBI overall) while going 26-for-85 (.306) with five doubles and seven home runs.  This spiked his numbers to .254/.366/.445 in 303 plate appearances with 11 doubles, 12 HR, and 49 RBI.
DH Anthony Hall3-for-5, 2B (9), RS
Hall’s second 3-hit game this season improves his line to .275/.390/.454 in 249 PA with 37 BB (14.9%) and 55 K (22.1%).

Yankees MILB 7/3: Drew Thorpe Continues to Dominate

News:

Nothing to report.

Scranton (38-41; 3-1 in the second half) (Outscored Syracuse, 10-8. The Railriders trailed 7-1 going into the top of the 5th)

CF Estevan Florial: 2-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, 2 SB (18), CS (9)
Florial is closing in on being the second 20/20 player in the minors this season (Trey Cabbage (LAA) is already there)
SS Oswald Peraza2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB
I mentioned a recent slump he was in down here. To be honest, it barely registers with me because we know he can hit this level of pitching. Anyway, he has back-to-back multi-hit games to get himself going again.
C Ben Rortvedt: 1-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, 2 K
1B Andres Chaparro: 2-for-5, 3 RBI, K
Chaparro had a 16-pitch AB that resulted in a strikeout. Anyway, he has driven in 53 runs this season and has driven home 3+ runs eight times. As for why he left the game, he was ejected.

CF Jasson Dominguez0-for-5, 3 K
Eek.
DH Austin Wells1-for-2, 2B (13), RS, 2 BB, K
.249/.348/.486 in 210 PA at this level (13 doubles, 10 HR, 40 RBI, 26 R, 27 BB, 50 K). He has 22 doubles and 22 HR in 102 Double-A games.
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-4, K
.245/.331/.571 in 245 PA. He has 19 home runs, three short of his personal best set last season. He has played in 53 fewer games.
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-4, HR (15), 2 RBI, RS, K
.220/.314/.469 in 245 PA (7 doubles, 15 HR, 42 RBI, 34 R, 27 BB, 44 K, 7-for-9 SB). His BABIP currently sits at .200. There is no guarantee that a BABIP will normalize during the course of a season, but one would expect his to normalize at least a bit in the second half.
C Josh Breaux1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS, K
An injury + the emergence of other catching options has pushed Breaux down a bit. Just remember that he hit 42 HR in 184 games between 2021-2022.
RF Jeisson Rosario0-for-3, BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (42-33; 3-3 in the second half) (Walloped Wilmington, 11-0, in a 5-inning rain-shortened affair)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, 2 RBI, K
Jones has hit safely in four straight games after a bit of a slump.
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, RS
Last 6 games: 8-for-22. Unless he goes on an insane hot streak, he won’t be able to overcome his extreme cold streak. However, he has an entire second half to show everyone that he is adjusting to this level.
DH Agustin Ramirez3-for-3, 2 2B (3), RBI, RS, BB
Ramirez (a catcher) is 9-for-17 with three doubles and a home run since his promotion. Overall, he is hitting .269/.396/.438 in 250 PA (10 doubles, 8 HR, 37 RBI, 39 R, 44 BB, 42 K, 7-for-11 SB). You should start seeing him climb on Yankees’ prospect lists.
C Rafael Flores1-for-4, RS
1B Spencer Henson2-for-3, 2B (12), 3 RS
.260/.348/.464 in 224 PA (12 doubles, 9 HR, 33 RBI, 39 R, 20 BB, 57 K). He probably deserves a look in Somerset, but Rumfield is occupying first base and they rotate the DH spot.
RF Anthony Garcia1-for-1, RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB
LF Aldenis Sanchez2-for-3, 2B (9), 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (13)
Sanchez has a 5-game hitting streak.

2B Luis Santos1-for-3, 3B (2), 2 RBI, RS

RHP Drew Thorpe: (W, 7-1)  5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K
Thorpe has allowed one run in his last 33.2 innings (0.27 ERA). Overall, he is pitching to a 2.33 ERA in 77.1 IP (58 H, 24 R, 20 ER, 4 HR, 25 BB, 94 K). He certainly appears to be in line for a promotion.

Tampa (35-39; 2-3 in the second half) (Defeated Daytona, 3-2)

SS Jared Serna1-for-4, HR (14), 2 RBI, RS, K
Serna breaks his 11-game homerless drought. He is hitting .287/.349/.495 in 318 PA.
3B Jesus Rodriguez: 1-for-3, BB, K, SB (10)
.291/.376/.419 in 235 under-the-radar plate appearances. He has 75 walks (12.3%) and 81 strikeouts (13.3%) in 610 career PA.

RHP Manny Ramirez0.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
RHP Cole Ayers (S, 3): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

FCL Yankees (12-9) (Crushed the Phillies, 13-4)

2B Keiner Delgado1-for-5, HR (3), RBI, 2 RS, SB (14)
If you are going to go 1-for-5, make the “1” a leadoff home run. He was pulled late in the game – probably means nothing, but something to watch.
 3B Angel Rojas0-for-0, RS, BB
SS Roderick Arias2-for-4, HR (4), RBI, 3 RS, 2 BB, K
Arias is on a 9-game hitting streak. Prior to the streak, he was in a 0-for-22 slump. Go ahead – figure out baseball.
3B-2B Hans Montero: 1-for-4, RBI, BB, HBP, 2 K, SB (8)
Montero continues his solid campaign – he is now hitting .347/.525/.625 in 99 PA with a perfect 8-for-8 stolen base rate. He has driven in 16 runs while scoring 20 times.
DH Enmanuel Tejeda1-for-3, BB, 2 K
Not all of them will make it (because how often does that happen in MLB?), but the FCL is overloaded with infielders. All four players at the top of the lineup today are 2B/SS types.
CF Willy Montero: 2-for-5, HR (1), 4 RBI, RS, BB, K
So far in his career, the 18-year-old has been close to as an exclusive CF as you can get without actually being one: 67 starts in CF, 4 in RF, 1 in LF.
RF John Cruz1-for-5, RS, BB, 2 K, CS (1)
LF Joel Mendez1-for-4, 2B (2), 2 RS, BB, 2 K
C Edinson Duran2-for-4, 3B (2), 2 RBI, 2 RS, K

1B Enger Castellano2-for-5, 2B (3), 2 RBI, RS, K

RHP Luis Serna1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
For now, the results are meaningless – we just need him to be healthy.
LHP Henry Lalane1.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Lalane is a big kid, so you worry about the BB%. In his debut 2021 campaign, he walked 13.3% of the batters he faced. Last year, he was able to chop that down to 7.1% while increasing his strikeout rate from 20.7% to 26.3%.
LHP Allen Facundo (W, 2-0): 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K
The 20-year-old out of Venezuela has a 0.69 ERA in 13 IP (6 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 10 BB, 20 K)
RHP Sebastian Keane1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
When it comes to pitchers like Keane, who likely has no business here, all they can do is perform and wait. He now has 22 strikeouts in 13.2 IP.
LHP Miguel Pozo1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Sometimes I wonder if the Yankees even have three LHP in their entire system – never mind having three who pitch in the same game!

DSL Bombers (11-10) (Lost to DSL Colorado, 6-4)

DH Geyber Blanco1-for-3, 2B (7), RS, HBP, K
The 17-year-old is 17-for-51 (.333) with seven doubles in his debut season.
LF Abrahan Ramirez2-for-3, RBI, RS
The 18-year-old is hitting .324/.447/.448 in 132 PA in 2022-2023. He was signed for $30,000 in 2022.

RHP Chalniel Arias (L, 1-1): 3.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

LHP Rafelin Nivar: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
Nivar was a $10,000 signing during the 2022 signing period.

DSL Yankees (15-5) (Squeaked past the DSL Rockies squad, 7-6)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-4, 2 RS, BB, K, SB (10)

Yankees MILB 7/1: Tyler Hardman Hits 3 HR

News:

Nothing to report.

Scranton (37-41; 3-1 in the second half) (Knocked off Syracuse, 8-3)

RF Estevan Florial: 2-for-5, 2B (11), 3B (4), 2 RS, K
Florial has 35 extra-base hits (11 doubles, 4 triples, 20 HR) in 62 games.
SS Oswald Peraza2-for-5, HR (12), 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
A nice start to his July after a tough June (which featured an injury). He hit only .155/.265/.310 during that month.
C Ben Rortvedt2-for-4, HR (4), 2 RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
Simply put, he must stay healthy.
3B Andres Chaparro1-for-5, 2B (14), RBI, RS, K
LF Elijah Dunham0-for-4, BB, K
1B Carlos Narvaez2-for-3, HR (6), SF, 2 RBI, RS
Narvaez, who is hitting .283, has homered in back-to-back games for the second time this season.
DH Franchy Cordero0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
2B Jesus Bastidas1-for-4, 2B (11), RBI, K
CF Brandon Lockridge1-for-4, K

RHP Mitch Spence: (W, 6-4)  7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, HR
Spence puts together a big effort. His ERA is at 4.63 in 83.2 IP (84 H, 49 R, 43 ER, 16 HR, 32 BB, 72 K). It’s the third time this season he has put together a 7-inning effort.
RHP Deivi Garcia1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
LHP D.J. Snelten: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR

Somerset (45-27; 3-1 in the second half) (Defeated Bowie, 9-5)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-3, RBI, RS, 2 BB
A nice start to July after his strong June. Sweeney is hitting .245/.363/.434 in 317 PA. The most important thing is that most of the “bad” stuff happened early (he was still taking his share of walks during his down time) and he is showing a lot of progress.
CF Jasson Dominguez: 2-for-5, 2 RS, K, SB (19)
Dominguez’s first multi-hit game since June 16th. This one gets the average back over .200 (.201)
LF Everson Pereira0-for-5, RS, 2 K
C Austin Wells1-for-4, SF, 2 RBI, K
.253/.348/.494 in 201 plate appearances at this level.
3B Tyler Hardman3-for-4, 3 HR (19), 4 RBI, 3 RS, BB, K
Hardman is the first Yankees prospect to hit three HR in a game since…Jhon Imbert on June 29 down in the DSL!  Before Imbert, I know that Everson Pereira hit three home runs in a game back in September 2021. I don’t recall if any others have done it recently. Hardman is hitting .250/.336/.582 in 241 PA (8 doubles, 2 triples, 19 HR, 40 RBI, 40 R, 27 BB, 70 K). He has three multi-HR games this season, all since June 17th. If he can truly play third base at the highest level, his stock goes up.
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-4, 2B (7), RS, BB, K
DH Eric Wagaman3-for-5, 2B (7), 2 K, SB (12)
Wagaman is hitting .324/.375/.539 in 112 PA with a 12-for-13 SB rate (he was 11-for-19 in his career entering this season)
RF Matt Pita0-for-5, K
2B Delvin Perez: 1-for-3, SF, RBI, RS, K, SB (6)

RHP Chase Hampton5.2 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
Hampton has very few clunkers in his debut season (had a 4.2 IP/5 R outing in Hudson Valley back on 4/25). Double-A is a huge adjustment so we’ll see how he comes back next time out.
RHP Danny Watson: (W, 2-0) 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Since promotion: 12.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 11 K. He has ten strikeouts in his last 5.2 IP.
RHP Justin Wilson1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

3B Ben Cowles1-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
C Agustin Ramirez: 3-for-5, 2B (1), 2 RS
Ramirez is 6-for-14 since his promotion with a double and a home run.
DH Christopher Familia2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
Familia is 3-for-13 with a double and 4 runs batted in since his promotion. He has a rather incredible 35 RBI in 24 games.
SS Alexander Vargas2-for-3, SF, 2 RBI, RS
Vargas has three multi-hit games in his last four games played. A major slump crushed his triple slash, which is at .222/.276/.370.
1B Spencer Henson2-for-,3, 2B (11), SF, 2 RBI, RS, K
.254/.344/.455 in 221 PA.
LF Grant Richardson1-for-4, 2 K, SB (10)

2B Luis Santos1-for-4, K

LHP Carlos Rodon3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K
He handled his demotion to Hudson Valley well. He really didn’t do anything all that bad in Somerset.
RHP Zach Messinger (W, 1-5): 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 K
It took piggybacking Rodon to earn a much-deserved first win of the season. He owns a 2.98 ERA in 63.1 IP (57 H, 28 R, 21 ER, 6 HR, 32 BB, 82 K)
LHP Clay Aguilar0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

RHP Matt Keating0.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
Keating is having a good year – hopefully this is just a bump in the road.

A massive improvement for the 18-year-old.
SS Hans Montero2-for-4, 2B (4), RBI, BB
Montero couldn’t even hit .200 in 375 DSL plate appearances while hitting two home runs.
In the FCL this year, he is hitting .353/.527/.647 in 93 PA with four home runs.

Yankees MILB 6/30: Brando Mayea Hits First Home Run

News:

The Yankees have purchased RHP Jesus Liranzo from Lancaster (Independent). He was assigned to Somerset.

The 28-year-old started his professional journey in 2012. He owns a career minor league record of 11-18 with a 4.38 ERA in 212 games (15 starts). Liranzo has bounced all around the minors, having played for the Braves, Orioles, Pirates, Diamondbacks, Tigers, and Nationals. Fangraphs placed him on the “others to watch” in their minor league report on the Diamondbacks last year. He was given praise for his high-octane fastball and spin rates. I can see why the Yankees were interested.

Scranton (36-41; 2-1 in the second half) (Knocked off Syracuse, 10-6)

LF Estevan Florial0-for-2, 2 RS, 2 BB, 3 SB (16)
Florial ties his personal best for SB in a game. He is hitting .290/.384/.597 in 292 PA (10 doubles, 3 triples, 20 HR, 46 RBI, 50 R, 40 BB, 85 K, 16-for-24 SB)
CF Brandon Lockridge0-for-5, 2 K
C-1B Carlos Narvaez2-for-5, HR (5), 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
The 24-year-old also hit a pair of home runs down in Somerset earlier this season. Narvaez has 25 walks (19.2%) and 26 strikeouts (20%) since his promotion and is looking more and more like a legitimate MLB backup option. Last season was the only season when his batting average tanked, but he did contribute a personal-best 11 home runs. If you remember, he hit a walk-off home run during spring training.
DH Andres Chaparro1-for-3, RS, 2 BB
Chaparro has drawn seven walks in his last six games.
1B Rodolfo Duran1-for-4
  PH-C Ben Rortvedt1-for-1, 2B (4), RBI, RS

2B Max Burt0-for-3, 2 BB, K

RHP Clayton Beeter5.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 K, HR

LHP Josh Maciejewski1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Used primarily as a starter in 2019 and 2021, Maciejewski took on more of a bullpen role in 2022 (he hasn’t made any starts in 2023).

Somerset (44-27; 2-1 in the second half) (Lost to Bowie, 7-6)

SS Trey Sweeney0-for-5
Sweeney ends June 29-for-108 (.269) with seven doubles and eight home runs. The power display was impressive and hopefully continues into July.
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
Dominguez goes 18-for-97 (.186) with three doubles, three home runs, 19 walks, and 37 strikeouts. Judge for yourself.
DH T.J. Rumfield0-for-4, 3 K
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-2, RBI, 2 BB, K
Hardman had an impressive June (especially in the power department), going 21-for-80 (.263) with eight home runs and 16 runs batted in.

C Mickey Gasper: 2-for-4, HR (4), RBI, RS, 2 K

2.77 ERA (39 IP, 22 H, 16 R, 12 ER, 1 HR, 27 BB, 43 K). Santos isn’t easy to hit – but control has always been an issue.
RHP Jesus Liranzo1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
Liranzo’s organizational debut.
RHP Tanner Myatt2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K

CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, RS, BB, K
Jones had an up-and-down month. He finishes it 23-for-94 (.245; 4 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR; 13 BB, 30 K)
2B Ben Cowles0-for-5, 3 K
DH Agustin Ramirez: 2-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS
Ramirez is an intriguing catching prospect. He has eight home runs in 58 games between here and Tampa to go along with 43 walks (17.9%) and 41 strikeouts (17.1%).
1B Rafael Flores: 1-for-3, RS, BB
RF Christopher Familia1-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RBI, 2 K
Given how Familia’s season is going, it comes as no surprise that his first High-A hit is a 2-run double. Between here and Tampa, he has 8 doubles, 2 triples, 11 HR, and 33 RBI in 23 games.
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-3, BB, 2 K, CS (5)
C Antonio Gomez1-for-3, BB, 2 K
Gomez ends June on a 6-game hitting streak.  He didn’t want to see the month end as he went 21-for-61 (.344) with five doubles. He started the month at .205/.272/.280 and ended it at .249/.319/.358.
LF Anthony Garcia2-for-4, K, SB (2)
.199/.295/.316 in 156 PA. Typically known for his ability to take walks and hit home runs, he has only three HR this season.
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-2, BB, HBP, K

LHP Joel Valdez4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR
5.65 ERA (51 IP, 42 H, 34 R, 32 ER, 7 HR, 37 BB, 52 K). The walks and the homers certainly present a problem at the moment.
RHP Harrison Cohen2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
3.09 ERA between here and Tampa (20.1 IP, 19 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 7 BB, 26 K)

RHP Mason Vinyard1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Luis Santos0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
This is indeed the same Luis Santos who normally operates as a utility infielder.

Tampa (34-38; 1-2 in the second half) (Score four in the bottom of the 9th to defeat Daytona Beach, 4-3)

SS Jared Serna1-for-5, K
.289/.351/.491 in 305 PA. He ran into a bit of a wall at the end of June, finishing 30-for-114 (.263). However, he did hit seven doubles and five home runs while driving home 21 runs from the leadoff position.
2B Brenny Escanio1-for-3, 2 BB, 2 K
Escanio, who is only 20, finishes June with a .294/.370/.424 line that featured both of his home runs this season. I won’t try to convince you that he is a top prospect – just showing you that a 20-year-old may be adjusting to a level.
C Jesus Rodriguez2-for-5, 2 RBI, K
His 2-run single with two outs in the bottom of the 9th finished off the comeback. Rodriguez is now hitting .294/.377/.423 in 224 PA with 25 walks (11.2%) and 32 strikeouts (14.3%). He finishes June 31-for-85 (.365). As stated a few days ago, he should get some more catching opportunities (in addition to his work elsewhere on the diamond) with Agustin Ramirez‘s promotion.
CF Anthony Hall0-for-3, HBP, K
.275/.389/.466 in 226 PA. A mundane ending to a solid month, where he hit .284/.373/.545 with six home runs. In May, he hit .338/.477/.471 with one home run. After a slow April (which came on the heels of receiving one AB before being injured in 2022), he has essentially destroyed this level.
DH Omar Martinez0-for-3, RS, BB, K
LF Daury Arias: 2-for-3, RS, BB, K, SB (7)
RF Tayler Aguilar0-for-2, 2 BB, K
1B Jake Palmer0-for-3, RBI, RS, BB
3B Beau Brewer1-for-4, RBI, RS, K

RHP Hayden Merda: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
The 9th-inning rally saves Merda from what would have been an undeserved loss. He owns a 5.07 ERA in 60.1 IP (56 H, 38 R, 34 ER, 4 HR, 27 BB, 60 K). One thing those who follow Yankees’ prospects have learned is to pay attention to the middle-round pitchers they choose.

Yankees MILB 6/28: Estevan Florial Hits #20

News:

There is a rumor that both C Agustin Ramirez and OF Christopher Familia are on their way to Hudson Valley. Neither was in Tampa’s or Hudson Valley’s lineup tonight.

If true, they are earned promotions. Familia has made a mockery of Low-A, hitting .398/.474/.928 with 11 home runs in 21 games (95 plate appearances). He was repeating Low-A and is 23 years old, so may as well challenge him now.

Ramirez is a 21-year-old right-handed bat who is hitting .245/.384/.397 (119 wRC+) over 232 plate appearances with an 18.5% BB and 17.7% K. This is his first taste of Low-A, and he could be in High-A after only half a season.

I will note that the Yankees and the affiliates have not recognized these promotions.

Scranton (34-41; 0-1 in the second half) (Lost to Syracuse, 7-4)

CF Estevan Florial2-for-3, HR (20), RBI, RS, BB, CS (8)
Florial ties Luken Baker (Memphis; Cardinals) for the International League HR lead.  He is one behind Jo Adell and Trey Cabbage for the overall minor league lead. Adell and Cabbage are both Triple-A players in the Angels organization (PCL).
SS Oswald Peraza0-for-5, 2 K
Not the game he wanted in his return, but at least he is back.

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, 2B (15), HBP, 2 K

LF Everson Pereira2-for-3, HR (9), RBI, RS, BB
.298/.371/.556 in 170 PA. He will be desired on the trade market. The Yankees themselves should desire him, if they aren’t too concerned about his injuries.
   LF Aaron Palensky0-for-0, BB
3B Tyler Hardman: 2-for-4, 2 HR (16), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, 2 K

Escanio continues his solid June: 24-for-81 (.296; 1 double, 2 triples, 2 HR)
3B Jesus Rodriguez2-for-5, RS
Depending on what else the Yankees do with promotions, Rodriguez could find himself behind the plate more often.
CF Anthony Hall: 1-for-4, HR (8), 3 RBI, RS, BB, 2 K

News:

C Ben Rortvedt‘s stint on the IL didn’t last long as he was in the Scranton lineup tonight. The Railriders are now carrying four catchers (Rortvedt, Rodolfo DuranCarlos Narvaez, and Josh Breaux). They can use the 1B and DH slots to help distribute some at-bats (Rortvedt, Narvaez, and Duran all played tonight), but they also need to make sure these players get in their time behind the plate as well.

SS Oswald Peraza missed his third straight game this evening. OF Everson Pereira (Somerset) is still out of the lineup, as well.

Since they had a need for additional bodies in Scranton, UTIL Max Burt was promoted to Scranton. Drafted in the 28th round in the 2018 draft out of Northeastern, Burt is an organizational utility player. This isn’t his first stint in Scranton (played 36 games back in 2021). When I see a player like Burt, I think of someone you are going to see coaching, scouting, or whatever they wish to do in baseball some day.

Scranton (33-39) (Lost to Buffalo, 2-1, in ten innings)

LF Estevan Florial1-for-4, HR (19), RBI, RS, K
.296/.385/.619. After hitting 9 HR in May, he has 7 in June.  That said, he hasn’t been on top of his game in June. He is only 18-for-74 (.243) with four walks and 22 strikeouts. He walked 15 times in May, so his discipline has taken a bit of a fall.
3B Andres Chaparro0-for-4
.238/.311/.457 in 289 PA with 12 doubles, 14 homers, and 43 RBI.

LHP Matt Krook1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Michael Gomez: (L, 0-3)  2.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K

Somerset (40-25) (Defeated New Hampshire, 4-3, in 14 innings)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, HR (9), 2 RBI, RS, BB
Sweeney has four home runs in his last five games. This home run tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the 11th.
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-5, BB, K
His average has fallen back down to .198. I think everyone should have at least SOME level of concern, right? He hasn’t shown much progress as the season has gone along. It’s not like the Yankees are loaded with upper-level OF prospects, especially if Everson Pereira is going to go down to injury every year.
DH Austin Wells: 2-for-5, 2B (9), BB, K
Wells is surprisingly hitting only .247 at this level, but you still feel confident that he has conquered Double-A. Some of that is due to the power he has shown (9 doubles, 9 HR in 38 games).
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-6
Eeeeeeek.
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-5, RS, BB, K
Palensky scored the winning run on a balk in the 14th.
C Anthony Seigler0-for-3, 3 BB
All three walks were intentional. Whatever helps the OBP!
1B Eric Wagaman0-for-5, BB, K
CF Jeisson Rosario0-for-5, BB, 2 K
2B Delvin Perez1-for-5, HR (2), RBI, 2 RS, BB, 4 K
I brought up his Top 100 status yesterday. In case you are wondering, he never lived up to it because the bat simply never developed. He can run and play multiple positions (though he is mostly a SS) and that perhaps can get him some MLB time down the road.

RHP Richard Fitts6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K
3.91 ERA (71.1 IP, 68 H, 32 R, 31 ER, 10 HR, 15 BB, 80 K). Fitts has been rolling lately. This was his 13th start of 2023 – if you believe in patterns (and you should at least pay attention to them), he made 17 starts in Tampa in 2022 before being promoted to Hudson Valley for his final five starts.
RHP Zac Houston1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, 2 K
.208/.265/.358 in 230 PA. In the FSL last season, he hit .203/.271/.311. He started the season very promising but has fallen down rather quickly. He is 7-for-62 in June with 23 strikeouts.
1B Rafael Flores1-for-4, 2B (10), K
DH Anthony Garcia0-for-4, 2 K
C Antonio Gomez: 2-for-4, HR (3), RBI, RS, K
Gomez is up to .247 as he improves his June numbers to 17-for-46 (.370) with four doubles and two home runs. A reason for optimism? I will take anything – he is still only 21 as a catcher in High-A ball.
2B Ben Cowles1-for-4, 2B (8)
LF Grant Richardson0-for-4, 2 K
RF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-3, 2 K

5.94 ERA (47 IP, 39 H, 33 R, 31 ER, 6 HR, 35 BB, 48 K).

Since promotion: 6 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 8 K
RHP Bailey Dees2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
2.20 ERA (28.2 IP, 15 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 44 K). It is always a bit of a crapshoot trying to figure out which of these big relief arms will become viable MLB relievers. As an organization, you want to keep churning them out. If only a few of them pan out, it’s a win.
LHP Clay Aguilar1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
2.93 ERA (15.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 25 K). Can’t ask for much more.

LHP Brock Selvidge6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 10 K, HR
3.65 ERA (61.2 IP, 57 H, 29 R, 25 ER, 3 HR, 15 BB, 74 K). Selvidge is only 20, so they don’t really need to rush him to Hudson Valley – but he has done a solid job. His ten strikeouts tonight set a new personal high (the previous high was 8, which he accomplished in each of his three starts prior to tonight)
RHP Manny Ramirez1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
RHP Cole Ayers1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

I just love crazy lines like .298/.508/.614 in 63 PA.

12-for-26 (.462). He is 20 years old.

Matheus’ 11 stolen bases lead the DSL.

SS Santiago Gomez1-for-2, 2B (4), 2 BB, K, SB (7)
Also 19, Gomez is 11-for-32 with a pair of home runs and 13 RBI.

RHP Sabier Marte: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Marte is another big kid (6’5″). Unlike many of their bigger pitchers, he thus far hasn’t run into major control issues (47/7 K/BB in 38.2 career innings)
