Yankees MILB 9/12: Will Warren Solid Again

News:

The Yankees announced that RHP Drew Thorpe (who should be the organization’s Pitcher of the Year) has been placed on the 7-day IL. No matter how minor the injury may be, he’s done for the year. They aren’t going to push him for the Double-A playoffs.

In his first professional season, Thorpe was dominant down in Hudson Valley, pitching to a 2.81 ERA (3.30 FIP) over 109 innings with a 32.4% K and 7.7% BB. That was more than enough to earn a promotion to Somerset, where he was more dominant. In five starts for the Patriots, he pitched to a 1.48 ERA (2.15 FIP) over 30.1 IP with a 40% K and 4.5% BB. Thorpe isn’t Rule 5 eligible until after the 2025 season, but that won’t stop the Yankees from using him in 2024 once he is ready.

RHP Danny Watson, one of their best relief prospects, was also placed on the IL. In 45 games between Hudson Valley and Somerset, Watson pitched to a 1.58 ERA over 62.2 IP with a 32.7% K and 10.0% BB. He held opponents to a .138 BAA. Hopefully, the injury is minor because he should be in the 2024 bullpen mix at some point. He isn’t Rule 5 eligible until after the 2024 season.

OF Nelson Medina was promoted from Tampa all the way up to Scranton today. Don’t read a lot into that – he is not likely to be playing in Scranton to start 2024. Medina, soon to be 23, hit .276/.380/.479 in 192 PA for Tampa with six home runs and 28 runs batted in. I can’t tell you how the decision-making process works (Elijah Dunham would have been a good choice to bring back to Scranton), but this is usually a move to get a warm body onto the roster. The Railriders recently lost Estevan Florial to MLB promotion after losing Jasson Dominguez and Everson Pereira.

The Somerset Patriots received some pitching from Hudson Valley today, as LHP Clay Aguilar, RHP Harrison Cohen, RHP Zach Messingerand RHP Anderson Munoz are now on the roster. This is a good indication that these four pitchers are scheduled to start 2024 at this level. Munoz started 2023 at Somerset before an injury sidelined him for a significant amount of time. The Yankees aren’t loaded with LHP, so there is an opportunity for Aguilar to make some noise.

With Tampa’s season over, Hudson Valley received some players for the playoffs (which started tonight):
RHP Luis Arejula
RHP Jackson Fristoe
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert
RHP Nolberto Henriquez
RHP Sebastian Keane
RHP Matt Keating

Just like with the kids promoted to Somerset, this is a good indicator that at least some of these pitchers will begin 2024 in Hudson Valley.

Scranton (68-68; 34-28 in the second half) (Defeated Buffalo, 4-1)

CF Brandon Lockridge0-for-2, HBP, K
  PR-CF Nelson Medina: 0-for-1, RS, K
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-4, 2B (11), RBI, 2 K
.252/.379/.402 in 301 plate appearances since his promotion. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Yankees look for a trade partner before they need to submit their 40-man roster this winter.
RF Franchy Cordero2-for-2, RS, 2 BB, SB (7)
1B Andres Chaparro1-for-4, 2 K
3B Jamie Westbrook1-for-4, RBI, K
DH Jake Lamb1-for-4, 2 RBI
LF Michael Hermosillo0-for-3, K
SS Jesus Bastidas0-for-2, BB
2B Wilmer Difo1-for-2, RS, BB

RHP Will Warren5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K
At this level: 3.91 ERA (89.2 IP, 76 H, 49 R, 39 ER, 15 HR, 43 BB, 93 K). Entering today, the league ERA was 5.53 – which should show you just how well Warren has been pitching lately.
RHP Zac Houston: (W, 2-1)  1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Aaron McGarity1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Michael Gomez (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
5.40 ERA (61.2 IP, 59 H, 45 R, 37 ER, 6 HR, 40 BB, 54 K)

Somerset (80-52; 38-26 in the second half) (Defeated New Hampshire, 3-2)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-5, RS
Since coming off of the IL: 3-for-20 with three walks and four strikeouts. Overall, he is hitting .245 with a .766 OPS (18 doubles, 2 triples, 13 HR, 49 RBI, 63 R, 62 BB, 87 K, 17-for-24 SB)
C Ben Rice0-for-3, RS, BB
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-3, RBI, BB, K
CF Spencer Jones0-for-4, 3 K
LF Elijah Dunham: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, K
DH Jeisson Rosario0-for-3, BB, 2 K
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-3, BB, SB (7)
It is too bad that the injury bug hit Seigler so hard – he is an athletic kid who switch hits and can take a walk. The rest of his offensive game simply hasn’t been there.
RF Grant Richardson1-for-3, BB, K, 2 SB (4)
Richardson is 18-for-21 stealing bases between here and Hudson Valley. He is 13-for-38 since his promotion with three home runs.
3B Max Burt1-for-4, RS, K, SB (18)

RHP Matt Sauer: (W, 5-4)  5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, HR
3.63 ERA (62 IP, 47 H, 26 R, 25 ER, 10 HR, 27 BB, 74 K). Does he survive the Rule 5 draft again?
RHP Carlos Gomez2.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
RHP Tanner Myatt: (S, 6) 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
2.80 ERA (54.2 IP, 29 H, 20 R, 17 ER, 3 HR, 38 BB, 67 K). As usual, Myatt is tough to hit but walks too many hitters.

Hudson Valley (70-62; 31-35 in the second half)  (Lost to Jersey Shore, 2-1. They fall behind in the best-of-3 series, 1-0. The final two games will be at home)

RF Anthony Hall0-for-5, 2 K
SS Jared Serna0-for-4, 2 K
DH Jesus Rodriguez2-for-4
Of course, Rodriguez would compile a multi-hit game in Game 1. During the regular season, between here and Tampa, he finished at .310/.399/.450 in 460 PA (20 doubles, 4 triples, 9 HR, 62 RBI, 66 R, 55 BB, 70 K, 21-for-25 SB)
LF Christopher Familia2-for-4, 2B (1), K
A multi-hit game for Familia. It will be interesting to see what he does in 2024 after a power surge in 2023.
3B Ben Cowles0-for-3, BB
2B Alexander Vargas1-for-2, 3B (1), RS, 2 BB
Vargas had an organization-leading six triples during the regular season.
C Rafael Flores1-for-3, RBI, BB
1B Spencer Henson0-for-3, BB
CF Cole Gabrielson0-for-4, K

RHP Yorlin Calderon5.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
A sparkling performance in Game 1 for Calderon, who entered this game with two High-A starts to his name.
LHP Joel Valdez1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Cole Ayers:  (L, 0-1) 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR

Tampa (61-69; 30-34 in the second half)

Their season is over.

FCL Yankees (35-22; 1-2 in the playoffs)

They lost to the Braves in the championship series. Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (33-19)

Their season is over, as they missed the playoffs by a half-game.

DSL Bombers (27-26)

Their season is over.

Yankees MILB 8/25: Drew Thorpe Dominates Again

News:

Nothing new.

Scranton (60-61; 26-21 in the second half) (Walked it off over Lehigh Valley, 6-5)

This is a big series against Lehigh Valley, the team they are chasing for the second-half title.

LF Estevan Florial0-for-4, 2 RS, BB, 2 K, SB (20)
The challenge system played a huge role in this game. They challenged a strike 3 call to Florial in the 9th and won it. He ended up walking and eventually scoring the winning run.
CF Jasson Dominguez2-for-5, RBI, K, SB (1)
Since promotion: 5-for-13, 1 double, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K. Dominguez has 38 stolen bases between here and Somerset.
C Austin Wells0-for-3, 2 BB, K
Wells is at .255/.352/.445 at this level. Good to see him taking his walks.
DH Andres Chaparro1-for-3, RS, HBP, K
RF Franchy Cordero: 1-for-2, RBI, RS, 2 BB
Cordero with the walk-off single in the 9th.
1B Carlos Narvaez2-for-3, RS, BB
3B Jake Lamb2-for-3, RBI, RS, BB
2B Jamie Westbrook0-for-4, K
SS Wilmer Difo0-for-4, RBI, K

LHP Edgar Barclay4 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 6 BB, 2 K, 3 HR
Barclay continues to struggle at this level. After allowing one home run for Somerset, he has allowed eight in 19.2 innings here. The ball is lively here so that is probably a part of it. I hate to blame all struggles on the ball (just like I hate to credit all successes by hitters to the ball)
RHP Zach Greene1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
RHP Aaron McGarity: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Matt Bowman1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Greg Weissert: (W, 5-3) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (70-47; 28-21 in the second half) (Defeated Hartford, 8-1)

2B Caleb Durbin2-for-5, 2B (6), RBI, 2 RS
Durbin is one of those kids who can become an instant fan favorite. He makes a lot of contact, can steal bases, etc. He has played SS in the past but the Yankees have not asked him to do it in 2023, instead giving him time at 2B and 3B. It makes you wonder if he can be a future DJ LeMahieu with some added speed. It’s a fascinating profile because the Yankees aren’t known for carrying kids with his profile (remember, he wasn’t drafted by the organization – he was a part of the Lucas Luetge trade with Atlanta)
DH Ben Rice2-for-4, 2B (7), RS, BB
The one knock on Rice right now is that he isn’t great against LHP. It is a legitimate concern, as he is 7-for-39 against LHP in 2023 (12-for-60 in 2022; 1-for-12 in 2021). Combined, that is 20-for-111 (.180) with three extra-base hits (one double, 2 HR), 14 walks, and 27 strikeouts.. One thing you notice in that profile is the sample size – it isn’t much. Without enough reps, it is hard to develop the skill.
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, K
Ramirez is hitting .194 (13-for-67) since his promotion with six runs batted in and ten runs scored. An encouraging sign is that the strikeout rate isn’t spiking much – he is at 17.6%. (17.7% in Tampa, 14% in Hudson Valley).
CF Elijah Dunham1-for-2, 2B (10), 2 RBI, 2 RS, 3 BB, K
Even in the offensive environment up in Triple-A, Dunham had issues there this year. Since being sent to Somerset, he seems to have figured things out. I will continue to push for him to get back up to Scranton to close out the season. There is room there, as Franchy Cordero continues to receive consistent playing time after Everson Pereira‘s promotion.
1B Josh Breaux: 2-for-5, RBI
RF Grant Richardson3-for-5, HR (1), 3 RBI, RS, K
Richardson puts together a big effort in his second Double-A game. Between here and Hudson Valley, he has 14 homers in 79 games after launching 16 homers in 90 games last season. Power has never been the concern…
LF Aaron Palensky0-for-4, BB, K
SS Max Burt0-for-4, 2 K
3B Eduardo Torrealba1-for-4, RS, K

RHP Drew Thorpe: (W, 3-0) 6.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 K
Since promotion: 1.29 ERA in 21 IP (9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 2 BB, 30 K). Overall: 13-2 with a 2.56 ERA in 130 IP (93 H, 41 R, 37 ER, 12 HR, 35 BB, 168 K). The 13 wins and (more importantly) 168 strikeouts are the top numbers in all of minor-league baseball. There is nothing to dislike in his profile. They can give him a taste of the offensively souped-up International League (Triple-A) before the season comes to a close.
LHP Josh Maciejewski: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Alex Mauricio: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
3.16 ERA (42.2 IP, 38 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 4 HR, 13 BB, 41 K). He hasn’t allowed a run in 8.2 August innings.

Hudson Valley (65-53; 26-26 in the second half) (Held off Aberdeen, 6-5)

SS Jared Serna2-for-5, RBI, RS, SB (6)
Serna now has a 6-game hitting streak and has 34 multi-hit games in 110 games played this season. He is still looking for that elusive first High-A home run, which could give him a 20/20/20 season (doubles, homers, stolen bases)
CF Anthony Hall0-for-3, 2 BB, K, SB (1)
DH Jesus Rodriguez0-for-3, RS, BB
2B Alexander Vargas0-for-3, RS, BB
C Antonio Gomez: 2-for-4, 3B (1), 2 RBI, RS, K
.233/.289/.325 in 321 PA. The 32.1% K rate remains troublesome as well.
1B Rafael Flores0-for-4, 2 K
LF Christopher Familia2-for-4, RBI
Familia is up to 57 RBI in 58 games between here and Tampa. I think he is answering the challenge at this level just fine.
RF Jared Wegner1-for-3, 2 RS, BB, SB (1)
Wegner’s first professional stolen base – congrats! He is 7-for-27 at this level.
3B Marcos Cabrera: 2-for-3, RBI, BB, SB (5)

RHP Leonardo Pestana2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Joel Valdez: (W, 3-6) 2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
RHP Shane Gray2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Mason Vinyard (S, 1): 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Old school save!

Tampa (57-62; 26-27 in the second half) (Swept by Palm Beach in a low-scoring doubleheader)

Game 1 (Lost, 3-0)

3B Kiko Romero0-for-3, K
.194/.318/.306 in 85 PA.
1B Josh Moylan1-for-3, K
Moylan increases his hitting streak to five (8-for-22)
C Omar Martinez1-for-3
CF Nelson Medina0-for-2, K
Medina’s first game since June 6th. The 22-year-old is hitting .275/.373/.443 in 153 PA with four home runs and a 7-for-8 SB rate.
   CF Tayler Aguilar0-for-1, K
DH Brenny Escanio1-for-3, SB (19)
LF Garrett Martin0-for-3, K
RF Daury Arias1-for-3, K
SS Jose Colmenares0-for-3, K
2B Beau Brewer0-for-2, K

RHP Ryan Harvey: (L, 1-2) 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
At this level: 4.26 ERA (25.1 IP, 20 H, 12 R, 12 ER, 4 HR, 13 BB, 18 K)
RHP Osiel Rodriguez1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Since promotion: 5.40 ERA (15 IP, 11 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 2 HR, 13 BB, 20 K)

Game 2 (Lost, 2-1)

SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, K
1B Josh Moylan0-for-3, K
His hitting streak is snapped. Moylan is hitting .281/.400/.333 in 70 PA with 12 walks and 16 strikeouts.
DH Omar Martinez0-for-3, 3 K
CF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, K
RF Daury Arias: 1-for-2, RS, BB, K
LF Garrett Martin1-for-3, 2B (5), RBI
Five of Martin’s ten hits are doubles.
3B Jose Colmenares1-for-2, 2B (4), BB, K
2B Beau Brewer1-for-2, BB
C Manuel Palencia0-for-3

RHP Yorlin Calderon5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
3.07 ERA (73.1 IP, 64 H, 28 R, 25 ER, 5 HR, 23 BB, 91 K). Most of the top performers have received promotions this year – two Tampa players (Martinez, Calderon) stand out a bit as players who have stuck to one level. In the case of Calderon, it can be justified as they built him up to return to the rotation.
RHP Matt Keating0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert: (L, 5-3) 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

FCL Yankees (35-22; 1-1 in the playoffs) (Lost to the Braves, 3-2, in Game 1 of the championship series. They must win the next two to claim back-to-back titles. The last time that happened was in 2014-2015 when the Red Sox accomplished the feat. The Yankees, who have the most league titles with 13, last won back-to-back crowns in 2004-2005)

SS Keiner Delgado1-for-4, 2B (2), RS, 2 K, SB (1), CS (1)
Including the regular season, Delgado has 14 doubles and 37 stolen bases in 51 games.
DH George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-3, BB, K, CS (1)
Delgado and Lombard Jr. were both caught stealing in the top of the 6th, a key moment in the contest.
1B Dylan Jasso1-for-3, SF, RBI, RS, K
CF Willy Montero1-for-4
LF Jackson Castillo1-for-4
2B Enmanuel Tejeda1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
RF John Cruz0-for-2, BB
3B Hans Montero0-for-2, K
  PH Joel Mendez0-for-1, K
In the regular season, you rarely see “strategic” pinch-hitting. Even in the rookie leagues, managers are a little more strategic in the playoffs.
  3B Dayro Perez0-for-0
C Edinson Duran0-for-3, K

LHP Henry Lalane (L, 0-1): 2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
Lalane, who recently signed with Scott Boras, pitched to a 4.57 ERA in 21.1 IP during the regular season (17 H, 12 R, 11 ER, 3 HR, 4 BB, 34 K). The fact that he is 6’7″ and is able to keep the walks at bay is encouraging.
RHP Jordarlin Mendoza3.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 5 K
RHP Sebastian Keane2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Keane is a 22-year-old drafted in the 18th round in 2022. He predictably pitched well this year and hopefully will get a taste of Low-A next week.

DSL Yankees (33-19)

Their season is over, as they missed the playoffs by a half-game.

DSL Bombers (27-26)

Their season is over.

Yankees MILB 8/24: Richard Fitts Tosses 6 Scoreless Innings

News:

Nothing new.

Scranton (59-61; 25-21 in the second half)

The game against Lehigh Valley was postponed due to wet grounds.

This is a big series against Lehigh Valley, the team they are chasing for the second-half title. They are currently 3.5 games behind both Lehigh Valley and Worcester. Durham (0.5 games back), Buffalo (3 games back), and Jacksonville (3 games back) are also ahead of Scranton.

LF Estevan Florial0-for-0
.289/.385/.566 (131 wRC+) in 343 PA. Florial is staring at minor league free agency this winter. The Yankees can definitely add him to the 40-man early in the offseason and look to deal him rather than lose him for nothing. Either way, it has been quite a journey for the kid. You may not love him as a prospect, but I will maintain that he deserves a chance.
CF Jasson Dominguez0-for-0
Dominguez is 20 – and a young 20 as he won’t turn 21 until February. This is an unusual year with the big club so anything can happen – but I would still be surprised to see him make his MLB debut. One thing Dominguez can do is put together a strong 2-3 weeks and make the Yankees think about it.
C Austin Wells0-for-0
Wells is hitting .262/.350/.458 (100 wRC+) at this level. The fact he has a .808 OPS and a 100 wRC+ tells you what you need to know about the souped-up conditions in Triple-A. There is nothing Wells can do about that – he just has to keep on hitting.
DH Andres Chaparro0-for-0
RF Franchy Cordero0-for-0
1B Carlos Narvaez0-for-0
3B Jake Lamb0-for-0
2B Jamie Westbrook0-for-0
SS Wilmer Difo0-for-0

RHP Randy Vasquez0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Personally, I give Vasquez the ball in the majors every five days and see what happens. The Yankees would rather not do that for their own reasons, so I guess I have to accept that.

Somerset (69-47; 27-21 in the second half) (Defeated Hartford, 2-1)

C Ben Rice0-for-4, K
No home run tonight? Disappointing (yes, I am kidding – sheesh)
DH Agustin Ramirez0-for-4, K
If you read this space enough, you already know that I am not concerned at all about Ramirez struggling here. They have been aggressive with him in his first taste of full-season ball and perhaps he has run into a wall. Or, maybe he has a hot month coming up to close the season. Who knows? The kid is a 21-year-old catcher – these types don’t typically fly through the minors like this. PATIENCE!
LF Elijah Dunham2-for-3, HR (9), RBI, RS, BB, SB (16)
His home run to lead off the 9th inning tied the game. Between here and Scranton, Dunham has 21 doubles, 15 homers, and 28 stolen bases.
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-3, RS, BB, K
RF Aaron Palensky1-for-3, BB, 2 K
1B Mickey Gasper1-for-3, BB, K
CF Jeisson Rosario1-for-3, RBI, K
Walk-off RBI single in the 9th.
SS Max Burt1-for-2
3B Eduardo Torrealba0-for-2

RHP Richard Fitts6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K (101 pitches)
Fitts is a bulldog. His ERA falls to 3.16 in 131 IP (110 H, 47 R, 46 ER, 18 HR, 34 BB, 139 K). His August line is insane: 24.1 IP, 14 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 8 BB, 21 K. He goes deep into most games, so it is also impressive that he hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a game since May 10th. After that game ended, his ERA was 6.07. A remarkable year for someone I think can be an innings-eating #3-#4 guy in MLB. The issue you hear about is that his command sometimes fails him inside the strike zone. That can certainly be developed.
RHP Jesus Liranzo: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
RHP Bailey Dees: (W, 1-1) 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Since promotion: 11.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 6 BB, 12 K. Overall, he owns a 71/21 K/BB over 53 innings pitched. When I say that the Yankees can afford to trade a few of their MLB relievers, it is because of relievers like Dees, Danny Watson, and Jack Neely at this level + several others at other levels. They have a pipeline of potential.

Hudson Valley (64-53; 25-26 in the second half) (Lost to Aberdeen, 2-1)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, K, CS (9)
Jones increases his hitting streak to five (7-for-20).
RF Anthony Hall0-for-3, BB, K
2B Jared Serna1-for-4
Overall, between here and Tampa, he is at .281/.350/.468 in 506 plate appearances. The power hasn’t shown up yet at this level, but I think it will.
C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, K
SS Alexander Vargas2-for-4, 2B (15), RS
DH Antonio Gomez1-for-4, 2B (16), RBI, SB (1)
Gomez stole five bases in 2021, but that has been the extent of his base-stealing prowess. Before all these other catchers started emerging, Gomez looked like the future guy. Defensively, he may still grade better than most of them.
3B Ben Cowles0-for-2, BB, 2 K
Cowles has a 36-game on-base streak (thanks to the Hudson Valley Renegades official Twitter account – I hadn’t picked up on this).
1B Rafael Flores1-for-3, K
LF Jared Wegner0-for-3, K

LHP Brock Selvidge: (L, 2-1) 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, HR
Between here and Tampa: 3.49 ERA in 111 IP (100 H, 49 R, 43 ER, 5 HR, 30 BB, 125 K). In 2022, Selvidge walked 3.59 hitters per nine innings. This season, the number is 2.43. Major improvement there. Furthermore, he has allowed only seven home runs in 157.1 career innings. That number could go up as he moves up the chain, but it is encouraging. Oh, and he is only 20 (21 in four days)
RHP Cole Ayers1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
RHP Luis Velasquez1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Since promotion: 1.99 ERA (31.2 IP, 18 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 18 BB, 36 K).

Tampa (57-60; 26-25 in the second half) (Defeated Palm Beach, 8-7, in ten innings)

SS Brenny Escanio1-for-5
Roc Riggio was in the original lineup but was pulled late. Hopefully, it is something minor in nature.
3B Kiko Romero0-for-5, 3 K
DH Omar Martinez: 1-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
.263/.376/.471 in 396 PA with 17 homers and 69 RBI. Martinez has done enough to earn a promotion and maybe he’ll get some time up in Hudson Valley in September/playoffs.
1B Josh Moylan1-for-3, RS, 2 BB
.294/.422/.353 in 64 PA (12 walks, 14 K). Moylan is doing what you want to see college bats do in their first taste of professional ball.
CF Cole Gabrielson1-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, HBP, K, SB (2)
RF Garrett Martin1-for-5, RBI, 2 K
LF Tayler Aguilar0-for-5, 2 K
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-3, 2 RS, HBP
C Manuel Palencia2-for-4, 2 RS
I said a few weeks ago that I don’t know much about him, and that hasn’t changed. That said, he is 9-for-22 at this level with only one strikeout. He is still looking for his first extra-base hit. Maybe I should do some reading…

RHP Sean Hermann5.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Between here and Hudson Valley: 5.29 ERA (98.2 IP, 110 H, 68 R, 58 ER, 9 HR, 44 BB, 83 K). Hermann is even younger than Selvidge (won’t be 21 until next June), so keep that in mind.
RHP Alex Bustamante0.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 0 K
RHP Ocean Gabonia2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Adam Stone1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Montana Semmel: (W, 3-1) 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
At this level: 15 IP, 18 H, 12 R, 8 ER, 3 HR, 4 BB, 15 K

FCL Yankees (35-22; 1-0 in the playoffs) (Defeated the Pirates, 7-6, in a sudden death game. They move on to meet the Braves in a 3-game series for the championship. The Yankees are defending their title from 2022)

2B Keiner Delgado2-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, RS, BB, K
Delgado hit 12 doubles in 49 games during the regular season. I would be stunned if he doesn’t get to Tampa next week.
SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
No complaints about his small sample size.
1B Dylan Jasso1-for-5, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
Jasso’s 2-out, 2-run HR in the bottom of the 6th turned a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 lead.
CF Willy Montero1-for-4, RS, BB
LF Jackson Castillo0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, HBP
DH Enmanuel Tejeda4-for-5, 2 RBI, RS
Tejeda had one 4-hit game in the regular season as well. He drove in the deciding 7th run.
RF John Cruz1-for-3, RBI, BB
3B Hans Montero0-for-4, 2 K
C Edinson Duran0-for-2, BB, HBP

RHP Luis Serna2.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Serna struck out the side in the second. In the third, sloppy play (including his own error on a pickoff attempt) turned out to be his downfall.
LHP Allen Facundo: (W, 1-0)  4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Facundo did a fabulous job calming this game down.
RHP Jackson Fristoe1.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
LHP Miguel Pozo (S, 1): 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Pozo picks a good time to pick up his first professional save.

DSL Yankees (33-19)

Their season is over, as they missed the playoffs by a half-game.

DSL Bombers (27-26)

Their season is over.

Yankees MILB 8/10: Ben Rice: 4 Hits, HR, 3 RBI

News:

There will be no report on Friday, August 11th. Please hold back your tears.

That was fast: RHP Deivi Garcia was claimed off waivers by the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox were among the first teams to get a crack at him. That ends his frustrating Yankees tenure, a tenure that included a start (for one inning) in an important playoff game and a complete collapse in 2022 that makes no sense to this day.

In the regular season, Garcia posted a 4.84 ERA (90 ERA+) over 48.1 IP with a 43/14 K/BB ratio. Good luck, and don’t fall asleep in the bullpen.

Baseball America updated its Top 100 Prospects list today, with seven Yankees prospects making the list. All of them are in the lower 50, but that makes sense as the system is more about its strong depth than having that one stud player who is about to invade MLB. That doesn’t mean we have a bunch of quality players and no future superstars. You never know when someone will surge and become a consistent MLB All-Star. The important thing, for now, is seeing the recognition.

Late update: MLB Pipeline wasn’t as favorable to Yankees prospects, listing only three prospects – all of whom are in the 79-81 range (Spencer Jones, Jasson Dominguez, Everson Pereira)

Scranton (51-57; 17-17 in the second half) (Lost to Syracuse, 10-1)

SS Oswald Peraza0-for-4
C Austin Wells1-for-3, 2B (7), K
Wells has seven doubles in 17 games since his promotion.
  C Rodolfo Duran1-for-1, 2B (13)
I am not sure why Wells left the game – it was 9-0, so that hopefully explains it.
LF Everson Pereira0-for-4, 2 K
.324/.372/.559 in 111 PA since his promotion. I get it: Triple-A is souped up. What is Pereira supposed to do about that, exactly? All he can do is hit under the conditions before him. And he is doing that.
3B Andres Chaparro1-for-4, K
RF Franchy Cordero1-for-4
DH Carlos Narvaez0-for-3, BB, 2 K
2B Jamie Westbrook2-for-4, HR (16), RBI, RS, K
1B Jake Lamb1-for-4, 2B (3)
CF Brandon Lockridge0-for-3, 2 K

RHP Clayton Beeter: (L, 1-3) 2.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 2 HR
Since promotion: 6.25 ERA (31.2 IP, 32 H, 23 R, 22 ER, 9 HR, 16 BB, 37 K). There is no sugarcoating how rough of a line that is – Triple-A is souped up big time and we are seeing some pitchers having trouble adjusting (Will Warren also fits in that category)
RHP Michael Gomez2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Zach Greene1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Zac Houston0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Ron Marinaccio1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
LHP Anthony Misiewicz: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Wilmer Difo1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
The utility guy gets on the hill.

Somerset (61-42; 19-16 in the second half) (Destroyed Binghamton, 14-0)

LF Jasson Dominguez2-for-5, 2 RS, SB (36)
Dominguez has a 9-game hitting streak (17-for-39, 8 stolen bases) and has multiple hits in five straight games. He was on the verge of reaching.250 tonight but settles in at .247/.365/.396.
C Ben Rice: 4-for-5, 2B (3), HR (6), 3 RBI, 4 RS
Rice, who has a pair of 4-hit games this season (both of which were a triple away from the cycle), has a 1.049 OPS in 78 PA since his promotion (3 doubles, 1 triple, 6 HR, 21 RBI, 15 R, 8 BB, 12 K, 4-for-5 SB). Overall, he has 41 RBI and 37 runs scored in 42 games. At 24, I can see the Yankees giving him a late-season taste of Triple-A. He is likely a hit-first type of prospect, and the bar goes up if he is more of a first baseman than a catcher. We’ll see.
1B Agustin Ramirez2-for-5, RBI, 2 RS, K
His first multi-hit game since his promotion. I can’t emphasize enough how big of a season this kid is having. Anyway, tonight was his first career start at first base. It doesn’t hurt to get him experience there.
CF Elijah Dunham: 3-for-5, HR (6), 3 RBI, 2 RS, SB (14), CS (3)
Personally, I would get Dunham back up to Scranton. If the idea to send him back down to Somerset was to allow him to regain some confidence, it has worked. He has 6 home runs and 14 stolen bases in 27 games. Overall, he has 12 home runs and 26 stolen bases in 32 attempts.
DH Anthony Seigler: 1-for-3, 2 SF, 2 RBI, K
The master of productive outs.
SS Jesus Bastidas1-for-5, RBI, K
RF Jeisson Rosario1-for-4, SF, RBI, RS, K
2B Max Burt1-for-4, 2B (10), RBI, RS, K
3B Eduardo Torrealba: 2-for-4, RBI, 2 RS

RHP Richard Fitts: (W, 9-5) 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K
3.38 ERA (119.2 IP, 101 H, 46 R, 45 ER, 17 HR, 30 BB, 130 K). Tremendous season and I hope he gets to Scranton before too long.
RHP Tanner Myatt1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
LHP Josh Maciejewski1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Jesus Liranzo1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (57-46; 18-18 in the second half) (Lost to Jersey Shore, 2-1)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-3, RS, BB
I am going to be fascinated to see what he does when he gets to the Double-A level. His season has been a tad uneven – but the end results are still encouraging. He is a big kid and goes through the stuff big kids go through. Patience will be key.
2B Jared Serna1-for-4, RBI
Serna’s first RBI since his promotion and 72nd overall.
3B Ben Cowles: 2-for-3, 2B (16), BB
.261/.352/.409 in 355 PA, He has hit safely in every August game (8; 11-for-28, 3 doubles)
1B Rafael Flores0-for-4, 3 K
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, 2 K
DH Anthony Hall0-for-4, 2 K
C Antonio Gomez1-for-4, K
LF Grant Richardson0-for-2, BB, 2 K
RF Jared Wegner0-for-2, BB, K

RHP Tyrone Yulie: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
Yulie’s stay on the IL wasn’t too long. He owns a 4.86 ERA in 82.2 IP with a 91/45 K/BB ratio.
RHP Luis Velasquez: 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Since promotion: 2.59 ERA (24.1 IP, 15 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 15 BB, 29 K). You may think that all organizations are filled with big-arm relief prospects. That isn’t really true – the Yankees are above average in this category. You don’t need too many of them to pan out.
LHP Clay Aguilar: (L, 3-2): 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Tampa (49-56; 18-21 in the second half) (Lost a doubleheader to Clearwater)

LHP Edwar Polimir1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
The Low-A debut for the 22-year-old. He pitched to a 4.43 ERA in 20.1 FCL innings with a 26/10 K/BB ratio.
RHP Nolberto Henriquez2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
The Low-A debut for the 23-year-old. These promotions are likely doubleheader related.

Game 2 (Lost, 3-1)

DH Roc Riggio0-for-2, BB, K

FCL Yankees (26-19) (Doubled up the Phillies, 6-3)

SS Keiner Delgado0-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
.277/.385/.452 in 195 PA. Delgado has more career walks (84) than strikeouts (54) and has stolen 60 bases in 73 tries (82.2%).
2B Enmanuel Tejeda2-for-4, 2B (4), RS, SB (21)
.311/.475/.452 (21-for-27 SB) in 179 PA after hitting .289/.463/.493 (11-for-17 SB) in 188 PA down in the DSL in 2022. This is exactly what you want to see.
RF Willy Montero3-for-4, 3B (2), 3 RBI, SB (5)
.325/.373/.435 in 169 PA. Montero hit .262/.396/.382 in 235 PA down in the DSL in 2022.

1B Dylan Jasso2-for-4, 2B (4), RS
8-for-18 with four doubles and three runs batted in.
CF Wilson Rodriguez2-for-3, 2 HR (2), 3 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Since top pick George Lombard Jr. has yet to make an appearance, Rodriguez is taking over as the high school draftee to drool over (8-for-20, 2 doubles, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 4 BB)

RHP Jackson Fristoe4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
4.88 ERA (24 IP, 17 H, 13 R, 13 ER, 3 HR, 22 BB, 26 K). Last year’s 12th-round pick hasn’t allowed a run in his last three appearances (9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 6 BB, 9 K). Five of those six walks occurred in one of the starts.
LHP Allen Facundo (W, 5-0): 3.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
If you want to win a lot of games, find a job as a middle-inning reliever in the rookie leagues. The starters don’t typically get to five innings, which opens the door!  Facundo has a 1.91 ERA in 28.1 IP with a 37/12 K/BB

DSL Yankees (27-15) (Lost to Phillies White, 6-0)

CF Brando Mayea0-for-4

19 RBI, 19 R, 15-for-16 SB in 27 games in his debut season.
C Josue Gonzalez2-for-3, 2B (12), BB
It just feels as if hitting is contagious amongst many of the organization’s catchers in 2023. Gonzalez (who is 19 and repeating the level, which is important to note) is hitting .367/.556/.620 in 117 PA

RHP Jerson Alejandro4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
4.32 ERA in 33.1 IP (28 H, 17 R, 16 ER, 3 HR, 15 BB, 31 K). He is 17 so the goal is to get his feet wet and hope he can stay healthy.
LHP Pedro Rodriguez2.1 IP, 0 H, 4 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
The pure definition of a DSL pitching line.

DSL Bombers (21-23-1) (Defeated Mets Blue, 7-6)

CF Gabriel Lara3-for-5, 2B (6), RS
Lara’s fourth 3-hit game this season. The most impressive thing for me is the hit tool he is showing, as he is at .269/.401/.423 in 162 PA (6 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR, 26 RBI, 28 R, 15-for-21 SB). The immense speed is there. The defense will benefit from the immense speed. If there is a bat to tap into, he can be a top prospect in the system within a few years. We will not get ahead of ourselves, though.
LF Abrahan Ramirez1-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Ramirez has 27 walks and 16 strikeouts in 116 PA.
2B Geyber Blanco2-for-4, SF, RBI, RS
.344/.418/.479 in 110 PA for the 17-year-old.
3B Adrian Gonzalez2-for-5, 2B (3), 2 RBI

RHP Mariano Salomon4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, HR

RHP Jose Julian Rodriguez1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Only the second career appearance for the 19-year-old.

LF Estevan Florial: 2-for-4, 2B (13), RS, K
.294/.389/.585 in 342 PA. Despite some thinking that he was sitting due to the rehab assignments for veteran players, that is not accurate. He was healing up from a minor injury.
CF Everson Pereira2-for-3, 2 HR (4), 4 RBI, 2 RS, HBP
One of the home runs went 455 feet at 107.7 MPH.  Since promotion: .352/.407/.630 in 59 PA (3 doubles, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 13 R, 3 BB, 14 K). Overall, he is hitting .306/.373/.566 in 244 PA (13 doubles, 1 triple, 14 HR, 48 RBI, 37 R, 22 BB, 68 K, 7-for-9 SB)

3B Tyler Hardman2-for-4, HR (24), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, 2 K, SB (9)

Yankees MILB 7/21: Spencer Jones Collects 3 Hits

News:

C Austin Wells was promoted to Scranton today, and instantly placed in the cleanup spot.

Wells, the Yankees’ first-round pick in the 2020 COVID draft, hit .248/.343/.460 in 113 Double-A games with 22 doubles, 1 triple, 23 HR, and 93 RBI. Whether he can stick behind the plate is still a matter of debate.

Scranton (43-47; 9-6 in the second half) (Lead Worcester, 4-0, in the 4th. The game was suspended due to a power outage. They will conclude this tomorrow afternoon (playing out the entire 9 innings) before a 7-inning nightcap)

CF Greg Allen0-for-1, RS, HBP
DH Jake Bauers: 2-for-2, 2B (7), RS
LF Everson Pereira0-for-2, 2 K
C Austin Wells1-for-1, RS, BB
Triple-A debut.
3B Andres Chaparro0-for-1, BB
1B Carlos Narvaez1-for-2, HR (8), 2 RBI, RS, K
2B Jamie Westbrook0-for-0, RBI, BB, CI, CS (4)
RF Brandon Lockridge0-for-2
SS Wilmer Difo0-for-1, K

RHP Will Warren3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K
Warren was throwing well, but his outing will be cut short. At this level: 4.39 ERA (41 IP, 36 H, 26 R, 20 ER, 8 HR, 20 BB, 44 K)

Somerset (51-35; 9-9 in the second half) (Crushed Hartford, 9-2)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-5, RBI, RS, K
Sweeney increases his hitting streak to five (8-for-25; 2 doubles, 1 triple, 8 RBI).
CF Jasson Dominguez1-for-5, RBI, RS, K
.216/.349/.371 in 378 PA (8 doubles, 2 triples, 12 HR, 46 RBI, 60 R, 64 BB, 103 K, 25-for-29 SB). There is still plenty of time to go, but I wonder how his season will be judged when all is said and done.
3B Tyler Hardman1-for-3, HR (23), 2 RBI, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
A new career best (23 HR in 71 games this year; 22 in 111 games last year). Hardman hits his bombs in bunches. He hit home runs in three straight games in early June and had a stretch where he hit six home runs in six games (including three in one game). While he has enough pop to make it to the big leagues, it is the strikeouts that are a problem: 101 in 302 PA (33.4%).
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-5, 2 K
RF Elijah Dunham1-for-5, HR (3), RBI, RS, K
Dunham has homered in back-to-back games and has hit safely in nine of his last ten games.
DH Ben Rice2-for-5, RS
Rice has back-to-back 2-for-5 efforts to begin his Double-A journey.
LF Aaron Palensky1-for-5, 2B (6), RS, K
C Josh Breaux1-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
Breaux is 5-for-25 at this level. Overall, in 23 games, he is hitting .191/.250/.303.
2B Max Burt: 2-for-2, 2B (5), RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB
.268/.358/.500 at this level.

RHP Yoendrys Gomez3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
1.26 ERA (28.2 IP, 15 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 17 BB, 34 K). He is throwing very well in his limited spurts. Tonight, he tossed 57 pitches.
LHP Edgar Barclay: (W, 3-1) 4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, HR
1.20 ERA (30 IP, 23 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 45 K). Barclay hadn’t allowed a home run since September 15, 2021. He tossed 67.1 homerless innings in 2022. You are looking at a legit swingman type of prospect here who can probably start, pitch in the middle innings, and even give you some late-inning production. You are probably thinking about guys like Ramiro Mendoza or Alfredo Aceves, etc.
LHP Josh Maciejewski1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (49-38; 10-11 in the second half) (Lost to Brooklyn, 8-7)

CF Spencer Jones: 3-for-5, 2B (21), RBI, 3 RS, SB (22)
Jones has nine 3+ hit games this season. He is 15-for-43 (.349) in July (2 doubles, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 9 R, 10 BB, 9 K, 4 SB)
SS Ben Cowles: 1-for-4, 2B (12), SF, RBI
C Rafael Flores0-for-1, 3 BB, HBP
Flores collects his first career 3-BB game.
RF Christopher Familia3-for-5, 2B (3), 2 RBI, RS
Familia has been struggling a bit since his promotion, so this game was needed. He is now 14-for-63 (.222; 3 doubles, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 9 R). Overall, he has 10 doubles, 2 triples, 12 HR, 38 RBI, and 34 runs scored in 36 games between here and Tampa.
DH Antonio Gomez0-for-5, 4 K
1B Spencer Henson1-for-5, HR (10), RBI, RS, K
Henson ties his personal best for HR in a season (61 games this year; 71 games in 2022). Overall, he has 28 HR and 98 RBI in 160 career games.
LF Anthony Garcia0-for-4, RS, BB, 3 K
2B Eduardo Torrealba1-for-3, 2B (5), RS, BB, HBP
3B Marcos Cabrera1-for-5

LHP Brock Selvidge4.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
It wasn’t a spectacular High-A debut, but he battled to keep runs off the board.
RHP Luis Velasquez1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
LHP Clay Aguilar: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
3.98 ERA (20.1 IP, 16 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 10 BB, 31 K)
RHP Carlos Gomez: (L, 2-3)  1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Harrison Cohen0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (42-46; 11-11 in the second half) (Lost to Clearwater, 7-0. After a pair of slugfests, Tampa hasn’t scored a run in the last two games)

2B Jared Serna1-for-4, BB, SB (17)
This is Serna’s first stolen base since June 20th. It was only his second attempt this month. Just one of those weird things. Serna is 21-for-69 (.304). He hit .310 in April, .305 in May, and .263 in June (though that came with five home runs and 21 RBI). Just remarkable consistency.
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, K
.292/.369/.432 in 294 PA. His 6-game hitting streak is snapped.
C Omar Martinez0-for-3, BB, 2 K
.244/.364/.409 in 269 PA. He is 16-for-54 (.296) in July with four home runs and 16 RBI.
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, HBP
Escanio draws walks (52; .335 OBP) but hasn’t done enough in the contact department. The Yankees took him as a lottery ticket from the Brewers for J.P. Feyereisen.
CF Daury Arias0-for-3, BB, 2 K
DH Brett Barrera0-for-1, 2 HBP
  PR-DH Beau Brewer0-for-1
LF Jake Palmer1-for-3, BB
1B Ronny Rojas0-for-4, 2 K
RF Felix Negueis1-for-3, BB

RHP Leonardo Pestana: (L, 0-4)  2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
4.87 ERA (40.2 IP, 38 H, 23 R, 22 ER, 7 HR, 21 BB, 54 K). This is his new personal best for innings in a season – beating the mark he set in 2019. Injuries, injuries, injuries. By the way, the Yankees are unlikely to give up on this kid, as he is pumping upper-90s fastballs.
RHP Ocean Gabonia2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
RHP Yorlin Calderon2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.00 ERA (51 IP, 41 H, 20 R, 17 ER, 13 BB, 64 K). Calderon doesn’t throw hard, but he does have a starter’s arsenal (sinker, slider, change, curve).
RHP Montana Semmel1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

FCL Yankees (18-13) (Lost to the Tigers, 4-3, in ten innings)

DH Keiner Delgado: 2-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, 2 SB (20)
Delgado has ten multi-hit games (29 games played).
SS Hans Montero0-for-5, 4 K
It happens to everyone….
RF Willy Montero0-for-4, BB, K
3B Enmanuel Tejeda: 1-for-5, RBI, 2 K
CF John Cruz1-for-4, HR (6), RBI, RS, 2 K
Cruz, still only 17, has 11 home runs in 52 minor league games.
LF Joel Mendez3-for-4, 2B (4)

RHP Luis Serna2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
7.1 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 10 K. The important thing is that he is showing signs of being back on track after missing a vast majority of the season.
RHP Anderson Munoz2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
The 24-year-old is on a rehab assignment. He has made it as high as High-A Hudson Valley, where he pitched to a 4.41 ERA in 32.2 innings last season (48/12 K/BB)
LHP Miguel Pozo2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Steven Fulgencio (L, 0-1): 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
The 22-year-old was signed all the way back in 2018, but didn’t make his debut until 2022.

DSL Yankees (20-10) (Lost to DSL Tampa Bay, 8-3)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-4, BB
Mayea is 9-for-41 in July, but has walked 12 times.
SS Santiago Gomez0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
1B Jhon Imbert0-for-1, 3 BB
3B Luis Ogando3-for-4, 2B (9), HR (4), 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (10)
Ogando is a 19-year-old right-handed bat who has played in 58 games at this level over the last two seasons (.330/.406/.519 in 226 PA)

RHP Yordanny Sosa2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Sosa pitched in 12 games back in his 2019 debut season, posting a 2.21 ERA (though that came with a 9/12 K/BB ratio), Then, he disappeared for four years and is back now. Injuries suck.

DSL Bombers (15-17) (Destroyed DSL Miami, 12-1. Talk about a bunch of baserunners: They compiled 13 hits and 14 walks while Miami commited three errors. This game had real 28-1 DSL potential. Trust me, stuff like that has happened before at this level!)

SS Ovandy Frias3-for-5, RBI, 2 RS, BB, 2 K, 3 SB (10)
Have yourself a morning/afternoon, Ovandy! It is hard to find much out there on the 19-year-old, who is in his debut season.
C Johan Contreras3-for-5, 2B (3), 4 RBI, RS, BB, K, CS (1)
The 18-year-old right-handed bat hit very well in his debut 2022 season but has yet to repeat that in 2023. Perhaps today is the start of something good.
CF Geyber Blanco3-for-5, 2 2B (11), 2 RBI, K
I pay close attention when 17-year-olds start raking in their debut season. So far, Blanco is doing that: .333/.405/.480 with 11 doubles in 84 plate appearances. He was just signed back in February.
DH Abrahan Ramirez1-for-2, 2 BB, K
The 18-year-old left-handed bat is hitting .314/.442/.446 in 45 games at this level going back to last season.
RF Luis Puello1-for-3, 2B (2), 2 RS, 2 BB, K
1B Johan Ferreira1-for-3, HR (1), 2 RBI, 3 RS, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (5)
Ferreira is already 20 years old. This is his first professional home run!

RHP Daniel Guerrero3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K
RHP Mariano Salomon (W, 2-1): 4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
He is 20 years old but this is his first professional season. Salomon has a 40/6 K/BB ratio over 29.1 innings.
LHP Luis Urbano1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

RHP Michael Gomez: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Somerset (49-35; 7-9 in the second half) (Lost a tough one to Hartford, 10-9. Hartford scored three in the 9th to earn the win)

SS Trey Sweeney: 1-for-5, 2B (16), 2 RBI, RS, BB, 2 K, SB (13)
A night after hitting a 3-run triple, Sweeney contributes a 2-run double. He has seven RBI in his last three games and is hitting .244 with 16 doubles, 2 triples, 12 HR, 45 RBI, 54 runs, and 13 stolen bases in 19 attempts.
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-5, K
This snaps his stretch of four straight 2-hit games. Now the goal is to not let it snowball.
C Austin Wells0-for-4, RS, HBP, 3 K
Wells is 11-for-54 in July.
3B Tyler Hardman: 2-for-4, RS, BB, K, CS (3)
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, HBP
Rumfield, who had some terrible BABIP luck in the first half, is 7-for-18 with three doubles since the break.
CF Elijah Dunham: 2-for-4, 3 RS, 3 SB (6)
Dunham is hitting .306 (11-for-36) since his demotion. Overall, he has 18 stolen bases in 23 attempts.
DH Ben Rice: 2-for-5, 2 RBI, RS, K
Rice earns his first two Double-A hits in his Somerset debut.
2B Mickey Gasper2-for-4, RBI, RS, BB
RF Jeisson Rosario: 3-for-5, 2B (7), RS, K, SB (8)
Rosario’s second 3-hit game this season.

RHP Blane Abeyta: 5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, HR
5.87 ERA (79.2 IP, 84 H, 54 R, 52 ER, 10 HR, 35 BB, 88 K)
RHP Jesus Liranzo1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Tanner Myatt: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Alex Mauricio: (L, 1-2) 0.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR

Hudson Valley (49-37; 10-10 in the second half) (Defeated Brooklyn, 6-4)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, HR (12), RBI, RS, K
Jones has homered in back-to-back games and owns a .267/.340/.483 line over 332 PA. I love baseball: Before these two home runs, he hadn’t homered since June 18th. There’s hope for Anthony Rizzo! Anyway, he is 11-for-34 in July with eight walks.
2B Ben Cowles1-for-3, 2 RS, BB, K
DH Agustin Ramirez1-for-3, RS, BB
He continues to maintain his .400+ average since his promotion (23-for-57; .404). His hitting streak is up to seven (11-for-27).
1B Rafael Flores2-for-4, 2B (12), HR (3), 4 RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
.290/.359/.381 in 281 PA. He is listed at 6’4″, 220 so I have wondered in the past if the Yankees think he will grow into some pop. Regardless, he signed as an undrafted free agent last year so anything they get is a bonus.
C Antonio Gomez0-for-4, 3 K
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, RBI, K
.214/.260/.347 in 292 PA. He has shown marginal improvement from his 2022 stat line, but is nowhere near his encouraging 2021 season down in the FCL.
LF Anthony Garcia0-for-3, BB
RF Aldenis Sanchez0-for-4
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-3, K

RHP Brendan Beck: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR
Beck finally gives up his first professional run. In five starts, he owns a 0.66 ERA over 14.2 IP (7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 17 K). Before you ask: He is averaging less than three innings per start because he is just coming back from an injury.
RHP Shane Gray3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
High-A debut.
RHP Jack Neely (W, 5-2): 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
2.68 ERA (40.1 IP, 24 H, 14 R, 12 ER, 4 HR, 14 BB, 64 K)

Tampa (42-44; 11-9 in the second half) (Lost to Clearwater, 8-7. By the way, Clearwater has been a beast in 2023. The Threshers are 58-27)

SS Jared Serna1-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB, K, CS (6)
.290/.354/.509 in 373 PA. Serna has scored at least one run in ten straight contests and has 64 RBI and 64 runs scored. When does he get a taste of Hudson Valley? He should get there for at least a little while before the season comes to a close.
C Jesus Rodriguez2-for-4, 2B (14), RBI, RS, BB
Rodriguez is up to .297/.375/.442 in 286 PA (14 doubles, 2 triples, 6 HR, 35 RBI, 43 R, 31 BB, 43 K, 13-for-15 SB). He has three straight multi-hit games (four of his last five games)
2B Brenny Escanio0-for-3, RS, 2 BB, 2 K, CS (6)
1B Omar Martinez1-for-3, SF, RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
.243/.364/.413 in 261 PA. He is 14-for-47 (.298) in July with four home runs and 16 runs batted in.
CF Daury Arias0-for-3, 2 BB, 3 K
3B Brett Barrera0-for-4, SF, RBI, BB, 2 K
LF Jake Palmer0-for-2, RBI, RS, 2 BB
DH Ronny Rojas1-for-4, HR (7), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
Rojas has three home runs in his last five games.
RF Felix Negueis0-for-3, RBI, BB, K

RHP Justin Lange3.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 2 HR
5.28 ERA (58 IP, 38 H, 38 R, 34 ER, 7 HR, 49 BB, 92 K)
RHP Matt Keating2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Adam Stone (L, 1-3): 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Osiel Rodriguez1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
He pitched here in 2022, so this is not his Low-A debut. According to BaseballSavant, he hit 93 MPH on the one sinker he threw. Signed back in 2018 for over $600,000, he is only 21 years old.

FCL Yankees (16-11)

Day off.

DSL Yankees (19-10)

Day off.

DSL Bombers (13-17) (Defeated DSL Seattle, 8-2. This was the conclusion of a suspended game from Monday)

CF Richard Meran: 1-for-5, 2B (1), RBI, RS, 3 K
Meran’s professional debut. He was a part of last year’s class that included the Brando Mayea signing, leaving not much left for everyone else.
2B Gabriel Terrero1-for-5, 3B (1), RS, 2 K
Terrero maintains his 1.000+ OPS (.329/.410/.603)
DH Edgleen Perez1-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
LF Gabriel Lara1-for-3, RS, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (12), CS (4)
With Lara’s crazy speed, he should be running as much as possible to get himself accustomed to the art of base stealing.
RF Ramiro Altagracia1-for-3, RS, 2 BB, 2 K, 3 SB (5)
3B Kevin Verde3-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RBI, RS, K
1B Adrian Gonzalez1-for-3, 3B (1), RBI, RS, BB, K
Something tells me that the baseballreference.com linker isn’t going to link to this kid…

RHP Chalniel Arias4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
The kind of outing that sticks out. Speaking of sticking out: He has a 2.18 ERA in 33 IP with a 49/6 K/BB ratio. At 19 (20 in September), you do want to see him start to move.
RHP Angel Sanchez1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Sanchez is already 22 years old, but this is his professional debut. He was signed back in 2019 but had some injury issues. By the way, according to MILB, he was signed as a LHP but is now listed as a RHP. That would be intriguing if no mistakes were made.

Yankees MILB 7/9: Drew Thorpe is Cruising

News:

Just like their MLB counterparts, the minor leagues will be taking Monday – Thursday off. The only exception is the DSL – poor kids.

Tonight is the MLB draft. Who do I think the Yankees will select?  I couldn’t tell you who most of the prospects are. If they don’t end up with Dave Parrish 2.0, that will be a good start.

Scranton (41-43; 7-3 in the second half. They will need to win the second half in order to make it to the playoffs)

Their game against Lehigh Valley was postponed, so they will get an early start to their vacation. Here are some notes:

Estevan Florial.294/.389/.596 (138 wRC+; 14% BB, 28.7% K) – His 21 home runs are good for second in the International League (Luken Baker (STL) has 22).

Oswald Peraza.267/.354/.506 (111 wRC+; 8.7% BB, 17.5% K) – The numbers may not scream at you (the International League is an offensive league), but Peraza seriously has nothing to prove here.

Everson Pereira: 9-for-17 (.529) with a home run and seven runs batted in since his promotion. Can a hot July get him to the Bronx in early August? The organization needs a left fielder and could determine that Pereira can do just as much as a trade option. We have a few weeks to figure all that out.

Andres Chaparro.242/.334/.464 (93 wRC+; 11.7% BB, 20.9% K) – He leads the organization with 60 runs batted in. The fact that a .798 OPS is good for only a 93 wRC+ emphasizes how offensive this league is. Brent Rooker (Oakland) has a .797 OPS in MLB and his wRC+ is 125.

Ben Rortvedt.298/.416/.543 (141 wRC+; 14.2% BB, 23% K) – He just has to stay healthy.

Carlos Narvaez.271/.416/.441 (121 wRC+; 18.1% BB, 20.8% K) – Don’t be surprised if you see his name come up in trade talks in the next few weeks. No, he cannot headline a trade. However, he is an upper-level catcher who is having success with the bat. That has value.

Somerset (47-32; 5-6 in the second half) (The game against Reading was suspended in the bottom of the 9th with the score tied at 4-4. They will finish it on August 15th)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, RS
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-4, K
C Austin Wells1-for-3, 2B (14)
Don’t worry about why Wells was pulled – he was ejected from the game. Anyway, he is now up to 107 Double-A games over the last two seasons. In those games (482 PA), he is hitting .255 with 22 doubles, 1 triple, 23 homers, 91 RBI, 61 R, 57 BB (11.8%), and 112 K (23.2%). He is also 11-for-11 SB.
   C Mickey Gasper0-for-1
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-3, BB, 2 K
1B T.J. Rumfield: 0-for-3, HBP
CF Elijah Dunham3-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS, K
This is a welcome sight for Dunham. He had four 3-hit efforts for Scranton this year, though two of them came in April. Hopefully, he gets a nice confidence boost and gets back up there quickly.
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-4, K
Palensky is down to .202 since his promotion (17-for-84; 5 doubles, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 20 R, 21 BB, 21 K, 7-for-8 SB). The walks have kept him afloat at this level after his .352/.434/.744 insanity with Hudson Valley.
DH Josh Breaux2-for-4, RS
2B Matt Pita1-for-3, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, K
Pita also hit a pair of home runs down in Tampa during his rehab stint.

RHP Richard Fitts: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
3.63 ERA (89.1 IP, 82 H, 37 R, 36 ER, 13 HR, 21 BB, 96 K). His last 9 starts: 2.09 ERA (56 IP, 44 H, 14 R, 13 ER, 11 BB, 60 K)
RHP Jesus Liranzo1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Lisandro Santos: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (47-34; 8-7 in the second half) (Shut out Jersey Shore, 2-0. The Renegades already clinched a playoff berth with their first-half title)

2B Ben Cowles1-for-4, 2B (11), RS, K
Cowles has doubled in three straight games and 9-for-27 (.333) in July.
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, K
Vargas, who got off to a very encouraging start, enters the break at .215/.264/.348 in 277 PA (10 doubles, 3 triples, 6 HR, 33 RBI, 33 R, 10-for-15 SB)
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-4, 2B (5), RBI, K
Since promotion: 14-for-38 (.368; 5 doubles, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 2 BB, 5 K)
DH Christopher Familia0-for-4, 4 K
Since promotion: 8-for-40 (.200; 2 doubles, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 7 R, 1 BB, 16 K). The Yankees needed to challenge him and he certainly is being challenged.
1B Spencer Henson0-for-3, 2 K
RF Anthony Garcia1-for-3, HR (4), RBI, RS, 2 K
.197/.301/.322 in 176 PA.
LF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-3, K
Sanchez is now the proud owner of a 9-game hitting streak.
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-3, 2 K
CF Grant Richardson0-for-3

RHP Drew Thorpe: (W, 8-1) 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K
Thorpe has allowed one run in his last 40.2 innings. Overall, he owns a 2.13 ERA in 84.1 IP (61 H, 24 R, 20 ER, 4 HR, 28 BB, 101 K). It is hard to believe his ERA was 4.26 at one point. Yes, he has earned a promotion – that goes without saying.
RHP Jack Neely: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.41 ERA (37.1 IP, 19 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 3 HR, 14 BB, 59 K). Kids like Neely should overpower this level, and he is.
RHP Luis Velasquez (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Tampa (40-41; 9-6 in the second half) (Defeated Dunedin, 6-1. They didn’t get off to a great start to 2023 but now they are on the brink of reaching .500)

2B Jared Serna0-for-3, RS, BB, K
He goes into the break hitting .285/.346/.481 in 347 PA (18 doubles, 1 triple, 14 HR, 51 RBI, 55 R, 28 BB (8.1%), 59 K (17%), 16-for-21 SB). There isn’t much to complain about with Serna – he has been everything you would want him to be. From the leadoff spot, he leads the FSL in home runs and RBI, while ranking third in runs scored.
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-3, BB
DH Ben Rice2-for-3, 2B (3), RS, BB
Rice was having no issues with High-A pitching before his injury – did we expect him to have any trouble here during his rehab stint? The rust is seemingly shaken off.
C Omar Martinez: 3-for-4, HR (6), 2 RBI, 2 RS
.237/.366/.374 in 238 PA (7 doubles,1 triple, 6 HR, 29 RBI, 29 R, 37 BB (15.5%), 72 K (30.3%), 5-for-6 SB). I love the walks – the strikeouts need improvement.
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
CF Daury Arias1-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, BB
The toolsy outfielder is hitting .232/.320/.337 in 278 PA.

Yankees MILB 6/29: Trey Sweeney Homers Again

News:

Nothing to report.

Scranton (35-41; 1-1 in the second half) (Shut Down Syracuse, 7-0)

RF Estevan Florial2-for-5, RS, K
Florial has 20 multi-hit games this season (60 games played)
DH Oswald Peraza0-for-4, BB, 2 K
He is 0-for-9 since returning but is still hitting .275/.345/.529 in 171 PA.
C Ben Rortvedt0-for-4, RS, BB, K
3B Andres Chaparro1-for-5, 2B (13), RBI, RS
CF Elijah Dunham: 3-for-5, 2B (12), HR (6), 2 RBI, 2 RS
It would be a boost to the organization’s depth if Dunham can have a strong second half. I will note that Dunham is Rule 5 eligible this winter, so a strong second half benefits him personally, as well.
1B Carlos Narvaez: 1-for-4, RS, BB, K
2B Jamie Westbrook0-for-3, RBI, BB, K
SS Jesus Bastidas1-for-4, 2 RBI
LF Brandon Lockridge: 2-for-3, 3B (1), HR (1), RBI, RS, BB
Lockridge collects his Triple-A triple and home run. He is hitting .279/.354/.488 in 48 PA since his promotion in what is turning into a solid bounce back from a tough 2022 campaign.

RHP Will Warren: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K
Since promotion: 5.22 ERA (29.1 IP, 30 H, 23 R, 17 ER, 7 HR, 15 BB, 32 K).
RHP Aaron McGarity1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Michael Feliz1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Since signing: 9 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 9 K
LHP Matt Krook1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Matt Bowman1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (44-26; 2-0 in the second half) (Defeated Bowie, 11-3)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-5, HR (11), RBI, RS, K
Sweeney doesn’t wish to see July (unless it means a promotion!) This is his 8th HR in June (to go along with seven doubles)
CF Jasson Dominguez: 1-for-4, 2B (7), 2 RS, BB, K, SB (18)
.199/.347/.361 in 300 PA (7 doubles, 1 triple, 10 HR, 37 RBI, 50 R, 55 BB, 83 K, 18-for-21 SB). There is a mix of a lot of things here, eh?
C Austin Wells: 2-for-4, 2 2B (12), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K, SB (4)
Wells is now 36-for-36 stealing bases in his career. In 98 career games for Somerset, he has 20 doubles, 22 home runs, 81 RBI, 58 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases.
DH Everson Pereira1-for-5, HR (10), 2 RBI, RS, 3 K
Amazing how one late AB can turn a rough game into an acceptable one.
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-4, HR (14), SF, 3 RBI, RS, K
14 HR, 42 RBI in 54 games this season. 4 HR, 42 RBI in 84 games entering this season.
3B Tyler Hardman: 2-for-5, 2B (8), 2 RS, K
.243/.323/.540 in 232 PA (8 doubles, 2 triples, 16 HR, 35 RBI, 37 R, 24 BB, 69 K). Hardman just oozes power and has legitimate big league potential.
LF Jeisson Rosario: 2-for-5, 2B (3), HR (9), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
Rosario could use a strong second half. The home runs and BB% are certainly there, but the rest of his offensive game is lacking in 2023.
RF Aaron Palensky: 2-for-5, HR (3), RBI, RS, K, SB (6)
Palensky has 15 HR and 16 stolen bases (in 17 attempts) between here and Hudson Valley. A 25-25 season is not out of the question for the 24-year-old.
2B Delvin Perez0-for-2, BB, HBP, SB (5)

RHP Richard Fitts: (W, 4-5) 5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 3 HR
As they say, if you are going to give up home runs, make them solo! Fitts now owns a 3.99 ERA (76.2 IP, 74 H, 35 R, 34 ER, 13 HR, 17 BB, 84 K). Going back to the home runs: He has allowed 27 in 188.2 career innings. That is something he will need to improve on.
RHP Blas Castano1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 2 K
LHP Ryan Anderson: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Anderson is up to 7.1 scoreless innings since his promotion.

Hudson Valley (39-32; 0-2 in the second half) (Lost to Wilmington, 4-1)

CF Spencer Jones0-for-3, BB
Jones is back down to .260 due to his 0-for-23 slide. His season is a streaky one – and I don’t think that surprises many.
2B Ben Cowles0-for-2, RS, 2 BB
DH Rafael Flores1-for-4, RBI, 3 K
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-4
Ramirez collects his first High-A hit.
LF Christopher Familia0-for-4, K
RF Anthony Garcia: 0-for-4, K
SS Alexander Vargas2-for-4, K
Back-to-back multi-hit games for Vargas, who is trying to get his season back on track.
1B Spencer Henson0-for-2, BB, HBP, K
3B Eduardo Torrealba0-for-4, 2 K

RHP Brendan Beck2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
Beck tossed 45 pitches tonight. I assume his next goal will likely be around 60, whenever they wish to stretch him out a little.
RHP Bailey Dees: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
2.23 ERA (31.1 IP, 17 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 11 BB, 49 K). One has to assume the 6’8″ 24-year-old is in line for a promotion.
RHP Jack Neely: (L, 3-2)  1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
Tough night tonight but still sports a 2.78 ERA in 32.1 IP (19 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 3 HR, 14 BB, 48 K)
RHP Carlos Gomez: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
LHP Clay Aguilar0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Tampa (33-38; 0-2 in the second half) (Lost to Daytona Beach, 6-4)

SS Jared Serna2-for-5, 2B (15), RBI, 2 K
Serna ends his hitless game streak at three.
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, BB, K
Agustin Ramirez being promoted has seemingly allowed Rodriguez to move higher up in the lineup. He is hitting .291/.376/.423 in 219 PA, so a move up the lineup has certainly been earned. He can catch (ten starts behind the plate) but they are using him a lot at third base.
DH Anthony Hall0-for-4, RS, BB, 3 K
Hall’s home run streak ends at four straight games.
C Omar Martinez2-for-3, 2B (6), RS, 2 BB, K
.232/.361/.369 in 202 PA for the 21-year-old left-handed bat. I think all Yankees fans are intrigued by left-handed hitting catching prospects.
CF Daury Arias: 3-for-5, HR (4), 2 RBI, RS
.230/.318/.349 in 236 PA. This is his second 3-hit game in June. Arias is one of those toolsy outfielders who can go in a million different directions – just have to keep throwing him in the lineup and see what happens. He is only 21.
2B Brett Barrera: 1-for-3, RBI
Barrera’s first game since June 3.
  2B Brenny Escanio0-for-1, BB
RF Tayler Aguilar0-for-4, BB, K
LF Jake Palmer1-for-4, 2B (2), RS, BB
1B Ronny Rojas0-for-2, 2 BB

LHP Brock Selvidge4.1 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K
3.55 ERA (66 IP, 65 H, 30 R, 26 ER, 3 HR, 16 BB, 79 K). Tonight was a grind, but he kept the runs off the board. I find starts like this to be a big piece of a pitcher’s development.
RHP Yorlin Calderon2.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 2 HR
2.93 ERA (40 IP, 30 H, 15 R, 13 ER, 4 HR, 11 BB, 49 K). Today didn’t go his way but he has done well in his multi-inning relief role.
RHP Adam Stone1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
RHP Ocean Gabonia0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

FCL Yankees (11-7) (Defeated the Blue Jays, 7-2)

2B Keiner Delgado2-for-4, RBI, RS, BB
Delgado has 8 multi-hit games in his 17 games played. He is hitting .338/.460/.507. Yes, I can see him making his Low-A debut this season.
SS Roderick Arias2-for-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, 3 RS, BB, SB (8)
.242/.373/.435 in 75 PA. Those numbers may not shout at you but he is on a 6-game hitting streak that features four multi-hit contests (10-for-25)
3B Hans Montero2-for-3, 2 RBI, RS, BB, K, 2 SB (7)
Montero is raking. He is up to .367/.548/.683 in 84 PA with four home runs, 14 RBI, 20 runs scored, and 21 walks. He is on a five-game hitting streak (9-for-16) and has at least one walk in seven straight games.
DH Enmanuel Tejeda1-for-4, RBI, RS, K, SB (11)
.300/.482/.483 in 83 PA with 20 walks and 18 strikeouts. He has reached base safely in all but one of his 18 games.
LF Joel Mendez1-for-4, 2 K, SB (1)

DSL Bombers (9-9) (Defeated Tampa Bay, 3-2)

RF Ramiro Altagracia1-for-4, HR (3), RBI, RS, K

SS Ovandy Frias1-for-3, 2B (2), RS, K
2B Rafael Martinez2-for-3, 2B (2), RBI, CS (2)
Geyber Blanco was in the original lineup but didn’t even have an AB. Martinez is 8-for-33 with 11 RBI while Blanco is 11-for-38 (.289) with three walks.

RHP Omar Gonzalez4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K
Gonzalez is only 17, and this is his best outing. Season: 11 IP, 10 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 20 K. He was signed out of Panama for $135,000.
RHP Mariano Salomon (W, 1-0): 4.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
Salomon is already 20 but this is also his first taste of professional ball.

DSL Yankees (14-3) (Rolled past the Rockies, 16-6)

SS Luis Suarez1-for-5, 2 RS, BB, 3 K, SB (8)

1B Jhon Imbert3-for-4, 3 HR (3), 9 RBI, 3 RS, BB, K
Suffice to say, this is a career day for Imbert. He is 19 years old and this is his third taste of this level (to be fair, he only played in five games in 2021), which is why you don’t hear too much about him.
DH Luis Escudero3-for-5, RBI, BB
The 17-year-old is 12-for-45 (3 doubles, 1 HR, 14 RBI, 7 R, 14 BB, 14 K)
RF Niurby Asigen2-for-6
8-for-44 with a pair of doubles and a home run.
LF Joshua Leito2-for-5, RBI, RS, BB, 2 K

CF Elijah Dunham1-for-5, HR (3), RBI, RS, 3 K
Dunham’s first home run since May 6th. He is hitting .225/.361/.344. I like the walk rate (14.8%) and hopefully the rest of his offense will start rounding into form.
DH Josh Donaldson0-for-3, RS, 2 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (26-17) (Defeated Wilmington, 5-2)

CF Spencer Jones0-for-4, BB, 2 K
Jones has run into a brick wall – it shouldn’t last, but sometimes we (“we” includes “me”) have to realize that sometimes there is a reason why a player stays at a particular level.

RHP Bailey Dees (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.32 ERA (19 IP, 14 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 30 K)

Tampa (17-26) (Played two and won two against Palm Beach)

Game 1 (Won, 6-2)

2B Jared Serna1-for-4, 2B (8), RBI, K
LF Anthony Hall0-for-3, BB, K
SS Brenny Escanio1-for-3, RS, BB, K
CF Nelson Medina3-for-4, HR (4), RBI, RS, SB (6)
Medina’s second 3-hit game of 2023, as he sets a new personal best for HR in a season.
C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4, RS, K
DH Omar Martinez0-for-2, BB, 2 K
.227/.370/.402 in 119 PA.
3B Brett Barrera1-for-3, 2 RBI, K
Barrera, last year’s 8th-round pick, is only 2-for-24 this season. Hence, I am sure he was relieved to get that 2-run single.
1B Ronny Rojas2-for-3, 2 RS, SB (4)
RF Felix Negueis1-for-2, 2B (1), RBI, RS, BB, K
Given that Negueis is an impossible-to-fathom 3-for-54 this season, this double was a welcome sight. His BABIP is an unsightly .065. Suffice it to say, an “unlucky” BABIP is nearly 200 points higher than his.

LHP Brock Selvidge: (W, 2-3) 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
3.40 ERA (39.2 IP, 38 H, 18 R, 15 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 40 K). Selvidge walked 3.59/9 last season. This season, the rate is 1.59/9.
RHP Alex Bustamante1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
2.37 ERA (19 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 0 HR, 12 BB, 22 K)

Game 2 (Won, 5-2)

2B Jared Serna1-for-4, 2 RS, K, SB (9)
Serna is on a 7-game hitting streak (9-for-28). 9-for-28 doesn’t do anything for Serna’s average, as he is hitting .324 (he was hitting .325 when the streak began)
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, BB
C Agustin Ramirez: 2-for-3, HR (5), 4 RBI, RS
Ramirez had a 6-RBI game on 6/14/22.
LF Anthony Hall1-for-3, K, CS (1)
DH Daury Arias0-for-2, BB, K
CF Nelson Medina1-for-3, RS, K
Medina is hitting .283 in 133 PA (7 doubles,1 triple, 4 HR, 22 RBI, 14 R, 18 BB, 43 K)
RF Tayler Aguilar1-for-3, 2B (8), RBI, 2 K
Aguilar has eight doubles in 92 plate appearances.
3B Beau Brewer0-for-3
1B Ronny Rojas0-for-1, RS, 2 BB, K, SB (5)

RHP Sean Hermann: (W, 3-4)  5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
5.31 ERA (39 IP, 41 H, 24 R, 23 ER, 3 HR, 12 BB, 32 K). He tossed five scoreless innings his last time out, so maybe he is starting to get into a groove.
RHP Manny Ramirez: (S, 2)   2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
