Yankees MILB 9/24: Clayton Beeter Tosses 5 Scoreless Innings

News:

This is the last full report for 2023. I don’t typically type up reports during the off-season leagues. Those leagues are important, but the most intriguing part about them is who the Yankees send there.

I will probably type up some sort of recap soon enough.

Anyway, thanks for reading these reports this season. It’s a blast to do them, though, by late September, I am ready for a reset. What will 2024 bring? I guess we will find out sometime in April!

Scranton (73-75; 39-35 in the second half) (Defeated Syracuse, 7-3)

3B Jamie Westbrook2-for-5, RS, K
I like to give shoutouts to the minor league veterans who fill out rosters every year. Westbrook provided infield depth all season (played in 117 games), hitting 21 home runs. I root for him to fulfill his MLB dream after 1,110 minor league games – it seems doubtful he will be back in this organization next year, but you never know.
C Carlos Narvaez0-for-3, RS, HBP
  C Mickey Gasper0-for-0, BB
1B Andres Chaparro1-for-4, HR (25), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
15 HR in 2021, 20 HR in 2022, 25 HR in 2023….can he aim for 30 in 2024? And will it be as a member of the Yankees’ organization? I think he is eligible for minor league free agency. He began his journey in 2016. Supporting my claim is that Wilkerman Garcia was eligible last year, and he started his career in 2015. Just like with the Rule 5 draft, a team can prevent a player from reaching minor league free agency if they place him on the 40-man roster.
DH Jake Lamb: 1-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, 2 HBP
SS Jesus Bastidas: 1-for-3, RBI, 2 HBP, 2 K, SB (11)
If Chaparro is eligible for minor league free agency, so is Bastidas. There is likely a better opportunity for him in a different organization (I always say this: This is not a knock on the Yankees or the player! The Yankees have a load of infielders and Basitdas is not high on their list. In a different organization, the path is likely easier to earn some MLB playing time)
LF Aaron Palensky: 1-for-2, 2 RBI, RS, 3 BB, SB (2)
Palensky did a lot of damage while with Hudson Valley but slowed down in Somerset/Scranton. Some of that is certainly BABIP luck – it was over .400 for Hudson Valley, and under .200 for Somerset/Scranton. Anyway, he played in 103 games this season, hitting .245 with 20 doubles, 3 triples, 22 homers, 68 RBI, 72 runs, 54 walks, 100 strikeouts, and 23 stolen bases in 26 attempts. He is Rule 5 eligible this winter but I don’t think he will be chosen.
2B Wilmer Difo0-for-5, RBI
Like Westbrook, Difo provided depth. He played in 96 games, stealing 23 bases. Unlike Westbrook, Difo has already realized his MLB dream and won a World Series ring as a member of the 2019 Nationals.
CF Nelson Medina1-for-5, RBI, K
We will next see Medina in the Arizona Fall League.
RF Kyle Battle1-for-5, 2B (1), 3 K
Battle went 2-for-8 at this level.

RHP Clayton Beeter: (W, 3-5) 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 7 K
While Beeter is often erratic and may be suited more for a power relief role, there is no way the Yankees will leave him exposed to the Rule 5 draft. Today’s pitch mix: 51% 4-seam (avg. 93.2; topped out at 95.6); 35% slider; 9% curve balls; 5% change-ups. Between here and Somerset, he struck out 165 batters while walking 75 in 131.2 IP. He easily surpassed last year’s inning total (77).
LHP Clay Aguilar1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
Most pitchers had issues upon reaching Triple-A this year – Aguilar was no different.
RHP Michael Gomez1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Gomez did a solid job escaping a 7th-inning mess. He finishes with a 5.45 ERA in 67.2 IP with a 61/43 K/BB.
RHP Jesus Liranzo: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Matt Bowman1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Somerset (84-53; 42-27 in the second half)

They lost to Binghamton in the semi-finals. Their season is over.

Hudson Valley (70-62; 31-35 in the second half)

They lost to Greenville in the championship series. Their season is over.

Tampa (61-69; 30-34 in the second half)

Their season is over.

FCL Yankees (35-22; 1-2 in the playoffs)

They lost to the Braves in the championship series. Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (33-19)

Their season is over. They missed the playoffs by a half-game.

DSL Bombers (27-26)

Their season is over.

Yankees MILB 9/19: Trey Sweeney Doubles, Homers

News:

I have nothing interesting to report.

Scranton (71-72; 37-32 in the second half) (Defeated Syracuse, 10-5, thanks to a 7-run 9th inning)

1B Carlos Narvaez: 2-for-5, 2B (12), RBI, BB, 2 K
RF Franchy Cordero: 2-for-5, RBI, RS, BB, K
2B Jamie Westbrook: 2-for-5, RBI, RS, CI, K
3B Andres Chaparro: 3-for-6, 2 2B (23), RBI, RS, K
Chaparro’s 6th 3+ hit game this season (including a 5-hit game).
DH Jake Lamb1-for-2, HR (6), 3 RBI, 2 RS, 3 BB
Lamb’s 3-run HR in the top of the 9th gave Scranton the lead.
C Josh Breaux: 2-for-5, 2 HR (4), 3 RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
Four of Breaux’s eight hits at this level have gone over the fence. This is his first multi-HR game since 7/10/2021 (he hit three that day).
SS Jesus Bastidas0-for-4, HBP, 2 K
LF Aaron Palensky0-for-4, BB, 2 K
CF Nelson Medina: 2-for-5, 3B (1), RS, K, SB (2)
Medina earns his first two Triple-A hits after starting 0-for-19. Again, not surprising as he was placed here straight from Tampa.

RHP Clayton Beeter: 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 2 HR
This is likely his final start of 2023 (unless he is brought up to MLB, or they allow him to pitch in the season finale on Sunday). If it is, he finishes with a 5.32 ERA in 66 IP with an 82/40 K/BB at this level. Overall, in 126.2 IP between here and Somerset, he pitched to a 3.77 ERA with a 158/71 K/BB. Unless he is traded, Beeter will be protected from the Rule 5 this winter.
LHP Matt Krook: 0.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
LHP Josh Maciejewski: (W, 4-1)  2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K

Somerset (84-53; 42-27 in the second half) (Lost to Binghamton, 9-2. They are down 1-0 in the best-of-three semifinals. They will need to win the final two games to move on – the games are at home)

SS Trey Sweeney2-for-4, 2B (1), HR (1), RBI, RS
Sweeney compiled multiple hits in three of his last four regular-season games – good to see him keep it up tonight.
C Ben Rice1-for-3, BB, K
CF Spencer Jones0-for-3, BB, K, CS (1)
DH Agustin Ramirez0-for-2, K
  PH-DH Mickey Gasper1-for-2
I am not sure why Ramirez was pulled.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-4, K
2B Caleb Durbin1-for-4, K
LF Elijah Dunham: 1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS, 2 K
RF Grant Richardson0-for-3, K
3B Max Burt0-for-2, 2 K
  PH Jeisson Rosario1-for-1
  3B Eduardo Torrealba: 0-for-0

RHP Blane Abeyta: (L, 0-1)  3.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, HR
RHP Anderson Munoz0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Zach Messinger4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Messinger mostly pitched for Hudson Valley this season (one late-season start for Somerset). At all levels (including tonight’s playoff game), he had a 126/56 K/BB over 105.1 IP. An arm to watch next year.

Hudson Valley (70-62; 31-35 in the second half)  (Lost to Greenville, 7-3. They fell in the championship series, 2-0. There were a lot of success stories at this level – they promoted a lot of players up to Somerset and that is the overall goal)

2B Jared Serna0-for-4, 3 K
Serna, so consistent during the regular season, went only 2-for-18 in the playoffs. He wasn’t striking out much until tonight. Overall, there is nothing to complain about in 2023.
3B Ben Cowles0-for-4, 3 K
C Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
One of the most consistent bats in the entire system this season, Rodriguez went 5-for-18 in the postseason.
LF Christopher Familia: 2-for-3, 2B (3), RS, BB
Familia went 6-for-20 with three doubles in the postseason. In 73 games this season (including the playoffs), he compiled 14 doubles, 2 triples, 22 home runs, 63 RBI, and 58 runs scored. Successful, that is.
1B Rafael Flores1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, RS, BB, K
Flores went 5-for-13 in the playoffs with two doubles and a home run. He started to show off some pop in the second half of the season. He will be an intriguing story entering 2024.
RF Jared Wegner0-for-4, 3 K
DH Anthony Hall1-for-4, 2B (1)
Hall hit .194/.282/.296 in 24 games after his promotion. I am not going to worry about that, for now – just hope he enters 2024 healthy and ready to go.
SS Alexander Vargas: 1-for-4
CF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K, SB (1)

RHP Cam Schlittler3 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
At three levels during the regular season (including one start here), Schlittler pitched to a 4.11 ERA in 46 innings with a 50/21 K/BB. This is enough for the 6’6″ 22-year-old to build on heading into 2024.
RHP Yorlin Calderon: (L, 0-1) 3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
While he has only reached High-A, Calderon could be a sneaky Rule 5 pick this winter. He is 22 years old and compiled a 106/28 K/BB over 90 innings this season (including this postseason). Would he stick if he is chosen? That’s a different story.
RHP Matt Keating1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
Shake it off and move on to 2024.
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Tampa (61-69; 30-34 in the second half)

Their season is over.

FCL Yankees (35-22; 1-2 in the playoffs)

They lost to the Braves in the championship series. Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (33-19)

Their season is over, as they missed the playoffs by a half-game.

DSL Bombers (27-26)

Their season is over.

Yankees MILB 9/14: Clayton Beeter Ks 13

News:

LHP Clay Aguilar stayed in Double-A for 24 hours or so. He was promoted to Scranton today.

The Rule 5 eligible 24-year-old pitched to a 2.25 ERA (3.30 FIP) over 44 innings down in Hudson Valley with a 34.1% K and 13% BB. He missed the entire 2022 season.

Scranton (68-71; 34-31 in the second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 7-1)

RF Franchy Cordero1-for-3, 2 BB, K
DH Carlos Narvaez0-for-5, K
3B Andres Chaparro0-for-1, 2 BB, HBP
2B Jamie Westbrook1-for-4, K
1B Jake Lamb: 1-for-3, BB, K
LF Michael Hermosillo2-for-4, 2B (5), RS, K
C Josh Breaux0-for-2, BB, HBP
SS Jesus Bastidas1-for-3, BB, K, SB (10)
Bastidas has 13 HR and 11 stolen bases between Somerset and Scranton. I think he has a chance to make it to MLB as a utility type – probably not with the Yankees.
CF Nelson Medina0-for-4

RHP Clayton Beeter5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 13 K
Beeter sets a new personal best for strikeouts in a game. He owns a 5.40 ERA in 60 innings at this level (57 H, 37 R, 36 ER, 13 HR, 37 BB, 75 K). Overall, he owns a 151/68 K/BB over 120.2 IP. Unless they use him in a deal, Beeter is going to be protected from the Rule 5 draft this winter.  Tonight, he featured two pitches in his 100-pitch effort: 49 sliders + 48 4-seam fastballs (three changeups).
LHP Clay Aguilar: (L, 0-1) 2.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, HR
Aguilar’s Triple-A debut.
RHP Michael Gomez: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, HR

Somerset (81-53; 39-27 in the second half) (Defeated New Hampshire, 6-2)

CF Elijah Dunham0-for-5, 3 K
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-5, RS, 3 K
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-4, 2B (6), RS
Ramirez is hitting .217 with a .594 OPS in 130 PA since his promotion.
DH Spencer Jones0-for-3, 2 RS, BB
2B Caleb Durbin1-for-3, 2B (12), 2 RBI, K
If not for his injuries, Durbin easily steals 50+ bases this season. As is, he is 36-for-44 in 67 games.
PH-2B Anthony Seigler: 0-for-0, RS, BB
LF Grant Richardson: 2-for-4, HR (4), 3 RBI, RS
Richardson is 17-for-45 since his promotion (1 double, 4 HR, 9 RBI, 9 R). His 17 HR between Hudson Valley and Somerset is a new personal best. He is a 24-year-old left-handed bat who has too much swing-and-miss in his profile to date – if he can clean that up, he has a chance.
RF Jeisson Rosario0-for-4, 2 K
3B Eduardo Torrealba0-for-3, BB, K, 2 SB (4)
SS Max Burt0-for-3, BB, 2 K

RHP Zach Messinger4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, HR
A nice Double-A debut for Messinger, who pitched to a 4.36 ERA in 97 innings for Hudson Valley (82 H, 13 HR, 53 BB, 113 K).
LHP Ryan Anderson2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Harrison Cohen: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Cohen’s Double-A debut. He pitched to a 3.86 ERA in 49 IP between Tampa and Hudson Valley (40 H, 23 R, 21 ER, 5 HR, 24 BB, 64 K)

Hudson Valley (70-62; 31-35 in the second half)  (Defeated Jersey Shore, 6-2. The series is tied at 1-1. The decisive third game is tomorrow night)

3B Ben Cowles0-for-4
2B Jared Serna: 1-for-2, RBI, RS, 2 BB
Serna was on his way to a 20/20/20 (doubles/HR/SB) season, but couldn’t put a ball over the fence after his promotion here. That said, he wasn’t overmatched here either. The full package is a kid who should break into Double-A at some point in 2024.
DH Christopher Familia1-for-4, 2B (2), RBI, 2 K
LF Jesus Rodriguez: 2-for-3, RS, BB, K, SB (1)
Rodriguez is 4-for-7 in two playoff games. When you combine that with his regular season performance, he is hitting .315. I keep talking about this kid because I think performance still should matter. He has hit all season long at a young age while being asked to play four positions (C/1B/3B/LF). I simply cannot ignore that regardless of the Top 30 lists.
  LF Kyle Battle0-for-0
I hope this move was for defensive purposes only (as I have said before: In the playoffs, minor league managers can often be a little more “strategic”)
1B-C Rafael Flores1-for-2, RS, 2 BB, K
RF Anthony Hall2-for-4, RBI, RS, K
Hall struggled a bit after his promotion – good to see him compile a multi-hit game tongiht.
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, 2 RBI, K
C Antonio Gomez0-for-0
I am not sure why Gomez left the game early.
  1B Spencer Henson: 2-for-4, 2B (1), HR (1), RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
Not bad for a player who wasn’t in the starting lineup.
CF Cole Gabrielson1-for-3, 2B (1), K

RHP Cam Schlittler: (W, 1-0) 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K
A strong performance by Schlittler, who tossed 46 regular season innings between the FCL/Tampa/Hudson Valley this year (professional debut season)
RHP Osiel Rodriguez2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Rodriguez has the talent to move quickly. He is still only 21 years old (if it feels he has been around forever, he has been – since he debuted in 2019). He just has to start putting the puzzle together.
RHP Matt Keating: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Tampa (61-69; 30-34 in the second half)

Their season is over.

FCL Yankees (35-22; 1-2 in the playoffs)

They lost to the Braves in the championship series. Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (33-19)

Their season is over, as they missed the playoffs by a half-game.

DSL Bombers (27-26)

Their season is over.

Yankees MILB 9/2: Sean Hermann Tosses 8 Shutout Innings

News:

C/1B/DH Josh Breaux is back up with Scranton. The Railriders are in need of bodies and Breaux is a logical prospect to promote. I think OF Elijah Dunham also belongs, but they are resisting that move for some reason.

Scranton (65-64; 31-24 in the second half) (Defeated Rochester, 7-2)

LF Estevan Florial1-for-4, 2B (21), SF, 3 RBI, K
Florial’s 9th game with 3+ RBI this season.
2B Jamie Westbrook0-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K
1B Andres Chaparro:  1-for-4, SF, RBI
Chaparro’s 80th RBI this season.
DH Franchy Cordero1-for-4, RS, BB, K, SB (6)
3B Jake Lamb: 2-for-5, 2B (6), RS, K
C Rodolfo Duran: 3-for-5, 2 2B (15), 2 RBI, K
.254/.325/.454 in 228 PA (15 doubles, 1 triple, 8 HR, 31 RBI, 22 R, 20 BB, 51 K)
RF Michael Hermosillo1-for-5, K
SS Wilmer Difo0-for-2, 2 RS, 2 BB
CF Brandon Lockridge: 2-for-3, 2 RS, BB, 2 SB (21)
Lockridge, who is hitiing .294 with a .738 OPS at this level, is now 38-for-42 in the stolen base department between here and Somerset.

RHP Clayton Beeter: (W, 2-4; 8-6 overall) 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K
At this level: 5.15 ERA in 50.2 IP (45 H, 30 R, 29 ER, 11 HR, 31 BB, 58 K). Beeter mostly features his fastball (52% tonight) and slider (42%). Some still think his future is out of the bullpen.
RHP Zach Greene2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
RHP Ron Marinaccio2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (76-48; 34-22 in the second half) (Lost to Portland, 2-1)

SS Caleb Durbin0-for-4
Between here and Hudson Valley, Durbin’s K% is 6.2% in 275 PA. Amongst prospects with at least 250 plate appearances, that is second-best in all of minor league baseball (27-year-old Ernie Clement (AAA, Toronto) is at 4.9% entering today)
C Ben Rice1-for-4, 2B (9), RS, K
Rice has 33 extra-base hits (14 doubles, 1 triple, 18 HR) in 62 games. Last year, he swatted 18 extra-base hits in 66 games.
CF Spencer Jones0-for-4, 2 K
3-for-22 since his promotion with a homer, three walks, and nine strikeouts. You may have heard about an article talking about how Spencer Jones “lacks athleticism.”  Anyone who writes or says that has no clue what they are talking about. His athleticism is what makes him such a tantalizing prospect despite some warts (K%, GB%). Some of the old-school writers are so desperate for attention that they are jumping on the “Yankees are dysfunctional” bandwagon and literally making stuff up. There is enough to complain about without the need to do that.
DH Agustin Ramirez: 0-for-4, 3 K
1B Mickey Gasper1-for-3, 2B (6), RBI
.256/.364/.369 in 239 PA (8 doubles, 5 HR, 24 RBI, 32 R, 28 BB (11.7%), 40 K (16.7%), 8-for-9 SB)
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-2, BB, K, SB (6)
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-3
Since promotion: .196/.336/.411 in 211 PA (10 doubles, 1 triple, 8 HR, 28 RBI, 37 R, 28 BB, 49 K, 11-for-12 SB).
LF Grant Richardson1-for-3, K, CS (1)
Since promotion: 7-for-20 with a pair of home runs. He has yet to walk and has eight strikeouts.
3B Max Burt0-for-3, K

RHP Blane Abeyta (L, 8-7): 5.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, HR
5.71 ERA in 116.2 IP (120 H, 77 R, 74 ER, 15 HR, 11 HR, 50 BB, 114 K)
RHP Jack Neely1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Since promotion: 15 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 3 BB, 20 K
RHP Tanner Myatt1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
2.96 ERA in 51.2 IP (30 H, 20 R, 17 ER, 3 HR, 36 BB, 62 K). Myatt is a “post-hype” prospect who is still only 25.

Hudson Valley (68-57; 29-30 in the second half) (Defeated Wilmington, 8-5)

RF Anthony Hall1-for-5, 3B (1), 2 RBI, RS, K
Hall extends his hitting streak to six.
2B Jared Serna1-for-5, 3B (2), RBI
It isn’t often you see back-to-back triples. Serna is the owner of a 12-game hitting streak (16-for-51 (.314; 3 doubles, 2 triples)).
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-4, RS
  1B Spencer Henson0-for-1, RS
C Jesus Rodriguez: 3-for-4, RS, BB, SB (3)
Rodriguez is hitting .366 with a .993 OPS since his promotion. Overall, between here and Tampa, he has 18 stolen bases in 22 attempts. Why don’t you see his name prominently on the Yankees’ prospect lists? His overall profile is likely not “sexy” enough and he doesn’t have a set position (which may add to his future value, especially if he can play some catcher). Here is what I see: A kid who is hitting .314 in 198 career minor league games. It isn’t like he is old either (only 21). Bottom line? Who cares about prospect lists – just keep on hitting.
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-5, RS, 2 SB (15)
3B Ben Cowles0-for-4, SF, RBI, RS, K
His on-base streak ends at 41, but his night was still productive enough.
LF Christopher Familia: 2-for-3, SF, RBI, RS, BB, K
61 RBI and 55 runs in 64 games between here and Tampa.
DH Rafael Flores1-for-4, RS, K
CF Cole Gabrielson1-for-3, 2B (2), RBI, BB, 2 K

RHP Cam Schlittler0.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
This isn’t what someone dreams about in their first start after a promotion. That said, who cares? Move on to the next.
RHP Cole Ayers: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
Since his promotion: 2.70 ERA (16.2 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 6 BB, 21 K). Overall, Ayers has an 85/23 K/BB over 63 IP.
RHP Mason Vinyard: (W, 2-0) 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
Since his promotion: 2.73 ERA (33 IP, 23 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 2 HR, 19 BB, 37 K)
RHP Anderson Munoz: 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
At this level: 0.93 ERA (9.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 15 K). Munoz is 25 and missed the entire 2022 season, so this is essentially a rehab year.
RHP Harrison Cohen1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (60-63; 29-28 in the second half) (Defeated St. Lucie, 2-1, in ten innings. The Tarpons won’t make the playoffs, but an over-.500 record is still within reach)

SS Brenny Escanio0-for-4
RF Jackson Castillo1-for-4
DH Omar Martinez0-for-4, K
.254/.368/.459 in 419 PA. This is his first taste of full-season ball and he is handling it fine.
  PR Roc Riggio0-for-0, RS
1B Josh Moylan0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
3B Dylan Jasso1-for-3, 2B (1), RBI, K
Jasso’s first Low-A hit is a big one: A game-tying RBI double in the bottom of the 10th.
CF Nelson Medina0-for-3, BB, 2 K
LF Tayler Aguilar1-for-4, RBI, K
Walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 10th.
2B Jose Colmenares0-for-3, 2 K
C Manuel Palencia1-for-3, K
10-for-28 (.357) since his promotion with four RBI, two walks, and two strikeouts.

RHP Sean Hermann8 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Hermann only needed 71 pitches to get through eight innings. While there might be room for growth (he is only 20), Hermann’s ticket up the chain will rely more on efficiency than pure power. Between here and Hudson Valley (one start): 4.98 ERA (106.2 IP, 115 H, 68 R, 59 ER, 9 HR, 44 BB, 86 K)

Yankees MILB 8/27: Spencer Jones: 2 Hits in Somerset Debut

News:

SS George Lombard Jr., 1B/3B Dylan Jasso, and OF Jackson Castillo were all moved up to Low-A Tampa after the FCL season concluded yesterday. All three were in today’s lineup.

Lombard (18) was the Yankees’ first-round pick in the 2023 draft while Jasso (20-year-old right-handed bat) and Castillo (20-year-old left-handed bat) both were signed as undrafted free agents after the draft.

“Is the Lombard promotion aggressive for the Yankees?” That question is impossible to answer. The most recent direct comparison (Anthony Volpe2019) played under a different system. He never played in the GCL (now FCL), instead going straight to short-season Pulaski after being drafted. We’ll never know what the exact plans for him were because he came down with an illness that wiped out his season after 34 games.

Jasso and Castillo are college kids – one should never be surprised to see college bats making their way to a full-season league quickly. Many start there.

Scranton (63-61; 29-21 in the second half) (Defeated Lehigh Valley, 6-4. The Railriders took six out of seven in this series)

Up to the second second-half title chase:
Worcester: 31-19
Durham: 29-21 (game not yet completed)
Scranton: 29-21
Lehigh Valley: 29-22

RF Estevan Florial: 2-for-4, 2B (19), RBI, RS, SB (21)

LF Jasson Dominguez2-for-3, 3B (1), 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
Dominguez is 11-for-23 (.478/1.023 OPS) since his promotion with two doubles, one triple, and ten runs batted in. What, no home runs? He is right in the middle of the organization’s RBI title race, as he is up to 76 (Andres Chaparro leads with 77. Jared Serna also has 76). His triple slash now sits at .266/.376/.426. Remember when he was hitting under .200? It really wasn’t all that long ago. Yeah, a 20-year-old doing this in the upper minors deserves a ranking in the 80s, Pipeline.
C Austin Wells1-for-4, HR (5), 2 RBI, RS, K
Wells has eight doubles, five home runs, and 19 RBI in 23 August games. He is also in the middle of the RBI race, as he is up to 72 in 94 games.

RHP Bailey Dees: (S, 1) 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Since promotion: 12 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 13 K. In 113 career innings, Dees has allowed only 69 hits while striking out 147 (48 walks). There are some fun relievers in the minors who are getting closer to their big-league dreams.

Hudson Valley (66-54; 27-27 in the second half) (Lost to Aberdeen, 4-2. Poor Renegades have lost most of the players who helped them earn a playoff berth in the first half. Life as a High-A affiliate!)

C Juan Crisp1-for-3, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS
Crisp started in the system back in 2018, and this is his 98th career game. His last home run came exactly four years ago: 8/27/2019.

Yankees MILB 8/4: Richard Fitts: 7 Shutout Innings

News:

The Yankees have released LHP Tanner Tully, who is on his way to Korea.

Tully was signed to a minor league contract this past winter after spending time in the Cleveland organization. Down in Scranton his season, he pitched to a 5.64 ERA in 91 innings with a 77/26 K/BB. He did his job as a Triple-A innings eater and found employment overseas. Good luck to him.

SS Trey Sweeney is on the injured list down in Somerset. While I didn’t see the play, someone informed me that he injured himself stealing a base the other night. In 429 plate appearances this season, he is hitting .250/.366/.419 (119 wRC+) with 13 home runs, 49 RBI, 62 runs, and 16 stolen bases. Let’s hope he can get back before the season ends (September – so plenty of time)

Scranton (49-54; 15-14  in the second half) (Lost to Rochester, 5-3)

2B Oswald Peraza1-for-4, BB, 2 K, CS (4)
LF Everson Pereira2-for-4, RS
Pereira has four straight 2-hit games and has multiple hits (including a 3-hit game) in six of his last seven games. He has been a dominant performer at this level, hitting .347 with a .955 OPS
C Austin Wells2-for-3, 2B (4), 2 RBI, RS, BB
Wells is hitting .279 at this level with four doubles in 12 games. He might be starting to get more comforable.

3B Jamie Westbrook: 0-for-4, 2 K
DH Franchy Cordero1-for-4, RBI, K
RF Michael Hermosillo1-for-4

SS Wilmer Difo1-for-3, RS, BB, K

RHP Clayton Beeter6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, HR
Last outing: 3.2 IP, 8 H, 11 R, 3 BB, 5 K. I love when kids can toss out a bad outing and come back strong.
RHP Jonathan Loaisiga1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
He was throwing the sinker as hard as ever, reaching as high as 97.4 MPH. All the damage came in his second inning of work, so I am not going to read too much into that – as long as he is healthy.
RHP Zach Greene1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Ron Marinaccio (L, 0-1): 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, HR
I really don’t have much of an explanation for Marinaccio’s 2023 struggles.

Somerset (59-39; 17-13 in the second half) (Shut down Akron, 5-0)

CF Jasson Dominguez1-for-5, 2 K
C Ben Rice1-for-3, HR (5), 2 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, K, SB (1), CS (1)
This kind of game will soon be refered to as a “Rice” – other than the stolen base part. He shouldn’t be doing much of that.
RF Elijah Dunham0-for-2, 3 BB, 2 K, SB (12)
Dunham is 24-for-30 stealing bases between here and Scranton.
1B Josh Breaux1-for-5, K
LF Aaron Palensky0-for-4, BB, 2 K, SB (8)
DH Anthony Seigler0-for-2, RBI, 3 BB, K, SB (5)

Hudson Valley (56-43; 17-15 in the second half) (Knocked off Wilmington, 6-2)

3B Ben Cowles: 2-for-5, 3B (1), 2 RBI, K
A nice 6-for-15 start to August has raised his triple slash to .255/.348/.403.
LF Christopher Familia: 2-for-5, HR (7), RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
Familia has homered in back-to-back games and has six homers in his last nine games. I just have to keep repeating his HR totals because it is amazing: Familia is up to 18 HR and 47 RBI in 45 games between here and Tampa.
DH Agustin Ramirez2-for-5, HR (9), 2 RBI, RS, K
Ramirez has homered in back-to-back games and seven times in his last 12 games. When he was promoted, he was hitting .245/.384/.397 in Tampa. The numbers didn’t jump out at you – but it goes beyond that sometimes. For Hudson Valley, the line is .380/.427/.722. Nuts.
1B Rafael Flores1-for-4, RS
RF Anthony Garcia1-for-4
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, 3B (6), K
Vargas isn’t having a great year, but at least he can say that his six triples lead the way within the organization.
C Antonio Gomez1-for-4, K
CF Grant Richardson0-for-1, RS, 3 BB
2B Luis Santos0-for-3, RS, BB, K

RHP Drew Thorpe5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 10 K, HR
A nice bounceback after a tough outing last time out (4 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 3 HR). Thorpe has five 10+ strikeout games this season and owns a 2.81 ERA in 103.1 IP (78 H, 35 R, 31 ER, 9 HR, 32 BB, 128 K)
RHP Carlos Gomez (W, 3-3): 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K

Moylan’s first professional hit. Congrats!
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, RS, BB
3B Beau Brewer3-for-4, RBI
Brewer has a pair of 3-hit games in his last four games.

RHP Kris Bow: (L, 2-4)  3.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
RHP Ocean Gabonia2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Cole Ayers2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
4.08 ERA (46.1 IP, 47 H, 25 R, 21 ER, 3 HR, 17 BB, 64 K). Ayers’ ERA is elevated when compared to many of his relief peers in this system, but they are giving him the “multi inning” treatment.

SS Oswald Peraza1-for-5, 2B (6), RS, 2 K
You know my opinion: Peraza has nothing to prove here. That said, he is in a little 7-for-44 stretch (.159) and this is only his second extra-base hit during that stretch. To be fair, he has drawn ten walks during this time period.
RF Everson Pereira1-for-5, 2B (2), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K

LHP Edgar Barclay (L, 2-1): 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
They stretched him out to 60 pitches tonight. He now has a 1.05 ERA in 25.2 IP (19 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 38 K)

Hudson Valley (48-35; 9-8 in the second half) (Squeaked past Bowling Green, 5-4)

CF Spencer Jones2-for-5, RBI, RS, K
.266/.338/.469 in 320 PA (20 doubles, 4 triples, 10 HR, 41 RBI, 42 R, 30 BB, 99 K, 21-for-28 SB). He is 8-for-24 in July with six walks.
2B Ben Cowles2-for-4, RBI, BB, K
.254/.342/.392 in 269 PA. Cowles is 11-for-33 in July.
DH Agustin Ramirez3-for-5, 2B (8), K
Ramirez is 19-for-46 (.413) since his promotion. He has eight doubles in 11 games here after hitting seven doubles in 51 games for Tampa. This is his 5th 3-hit game this season, all since June 9th.
LF Christopher Familia1-for-4, RS, K
1B Spencer Henson2-for-4, K
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, RBI, RS
C Antonio Gomez1-for-3, RS, BB
.248/.315/.355 in 241 PA. Beyond an awful May (all months count, so we can’t just dismiss it), he has hit fairly well.
RF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-4, RBI, RS, K, SB (14)
  RF Grant Richardson0-for-0
3B Eduardo Torrealba0-for-4, 2 K

RHP Drew Thorpe: (W, 9-1) 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 10 K, 2 HR
2.27 ERA (91.1 IP, 67 H, 27 R, 23 ER, 6 HR, 30 BB, 111 K). He entered this game on one of the craziest runs you will ever find (1 run in the last 40.2 IP). So, now he has allowed four runs in his last 47.2 IP. By the way, Bowling Green entered tonight with the highest OPS in the league – so this was a nice little challenge for him.
RHP Bailey Dees1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
1.93 ERA (37.1 IP, 19 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 14 BB, 57 K).
RHP Jack Neely (S, 4): 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
2.58 ERA (38.1 IP, 21 H, 13 R, 11 ER, 4 HR, 14 BB, 60 K)
All three pitchers I just listed should be promoted soon. None of them have anything else to prove here so time to make some space.

Tampa (40-43; 9-8 in the second half) (Lost to Lakeland, 4-3, in ten innings)

SS Jared Serna2-for-5, HR (17), 3 RBI, RS
Serna is now 15-for-49 (.306) in July (3 doubles, 4 HR, 15 RBI, 11 R). In an oddball stat: Serna has not attempted a stolen base since June 22nd. He is 16-for-21 in that department.
3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-5, 2 K
Rodriguez is hitting .289 in 270 PA (11 doubles, 2 triples, 6 HR, 29 RBI, 38 R, 29 BB, 41 K, 11-for-13 SB).

3.38 ERA (77.1 IP, 72 H, 34 R, 29 ER, 21 BB, 91 K). Selvidge (20 years old) has put together an encouraging season.
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
2.43 ERA (37 IP, 27 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 17 BB, 41 K)
RHP Adam Stone1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Matt Keating: (L, 5-7)  2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
The defense hurt him in the 9th. The ghost runner or whatever you wish to call him got him in the 10th.

FCL Yankees (16-11) (Destroyed the Phillies, 12-3)

DH Keiner Delgado: 2-for-3, HR (5), 5 RBI, 3 RS, BB, HBP, 2 SB (18)
Last two games: 3-for-7, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 4 RS, BB, 3 SB. This raises his triple slash from .267/.374/.448 to .277/.391/.500. He leads the FCL in runs scored with 31 and stolen bases with 18.
SS Roderick Arias1-for-3, 3B (2), 3 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 SB (13)

C Brando Mayea0-for-4, BB, K
.265/.390/.397 in 82 PA. He is only 6-for-30 in July, but that comes with nine walks.
RF Jose Castro2-for-5, RB, RS
The 17-year-old is hitting .294/.456/.392 in 68 plate appearances. This is his debut season.
DH Josue Gonzalez1-for-2, K
Gonzalez (hitting .457 in 15 games) left the game early for reasons unknown.
DH Anthony Pena1-for-2, HR (2), RBI, RS
It is the DSL, so it is just as likely that they wanted to give a few at-bats to Pena today. He is at .306/.419/.556 in 43 plate appearances (debut season).
3B Santiago Gomez2-for-4, 2B (8), RBI

3B Gabriel Terrero1-for-4, K, CS (4)
CF Gabriel Lara0-for-2, 2 BB, K, 2 SB (11)

Yankees MILB 6/23: Everson Pereira Returns with a Bang

News:

RHP Clayton Beeter was promoted to the Scranton Railriders today. Beeter is the 9th-ranked prospect in the system (Pipeline).

In 19 starts for Somerset between 2022-2023, Beeter compiled a 2.09 ERA in 86 innings with a 117/44 K/BB ratio. I will note that his K% for Somerset has fallen from 39.4% last year to 29.7% this year.

He was acquired last season from the Los Angeles Dodgers for OF Joey Gallo.

Down in Somerset, OF Everson Pereira is finally back after an extended absence due to who knows what. Tonight was his first game since May 30th, but he was never placed on the Injured List.

Scranton (33-39) (Lost to Buffalo, 5-3)

CF Estevan Florial0-for-3, BB
His OPS has slipped to .994 (not a bad number to “slip” to)
3B Andres Chaparro0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 K
Nice to see him drawing a few walks to compliment his little home run spree.
DH Jamie Westbrook0-for-4, RBI
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-4, K
1B Rodolfo Duran0-for-3, BB
SS Jesus Bastidas0-for-4, K
LF Michael Hermosillo2-for-4, HR (8), RBI, 2 RS
RF Brandon Lockridge: 1-for-4, RS, 2 K
9-for-35 since his promotion.
2B Max Burt1-for-3, RBI

RHP Clayton Beeter: (L, 0-1): 5.1 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 2 HR
With his move to Triple-A, we get some Baseball Savant data. Beeter topped out at 95.3 MPH while sitting mostly 92-94. He also featured a cutter, slider, curve, and changeup – so he has a selection of pitches to choose from. The question will remain whether he will be a starter or a reliever long-term.
RHP Aaron McGarity: 2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP D.J. Snelten: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (41-25) (Mauled New Hampshire, 12-1, to clinch the first-half title and a playoff berth)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, HR (10), RBI, 2 RS, BB
Sweeney has five home runs in his last six games.
CF Jasson Dominguez1-for-4, 3 RS, BB
.199/.345/.367 in 281 PA. The league OPS is .729 (entering today) and he is at .712.
C Austin Wells1-for-4, HR (10), 3 RBI, RS, K
.247/.345/.500 in 177 PA at this level.
RF Everson Pereira2-for-2, HR (8), 3 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Pereira homers in his first AB coming off of his injury. On the season, he is hitting an impressive .295/.362/.541 in 163 PA. He needs to stay healthy.

PH-RF Jeisson Rosario0-for-1
It was Pereira’s first game back – don’t be alarmed by him by not playing the full game.
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-4, HR (13), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
The power this season has been unexpected – still waiting for more of his other batted balls to start falling in.
3B Tyler Hardman: 2-for-3, 2B (7), HR (14), RBI, 2 RS, BB, SB (8)
.233/.317/.513 in 218 PA (7 doubles, 2 triples, 14 HR, 33 RBI, 33 R, 23 BB, 63 K, 8-for-10 SB)
DH Eric Wagaman1-for-4, RS, K, SB (10)
LF Matt Pita0-for-4, K
2B Delvin Perez0-for-4, 2 K

RHP Matt Sauer4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, HR
Welcome back to where you belong (for now – a trip to Scranton before the season is over is possible)
RHP Danny Watson (W, 1-0): 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Since promotion: 10 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K. Nice to see him adding some strikeouts tonight.
LHP Ryan Anderson: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K
Anderson’s Double-A debut is a strong one. The 24-year-old (who stands 6’6″) pitched to a 3.16 ERA in Hudson Valley with an impressive 37/4 K/BB over 31.1 IP. While he was a bit old for the level, it was also the first time he tried the level.

Hudson Valley (39-28; they won the first half and a playoff spot) (Lost to Brooklyn, 6-1)

CF Spencer Jones0-for-4, 3 K
After his hot streak, he is 1-for-15 in his last four games. Ebbs and flows ebbs and flows. He is hitting .276/.333/.510, so his overall season is good, even with the elevated strikeout rate.
SS Ben Cowles0-for-4, 3 K
C Rafael Flores1-for-4, 2 K
DH Antonio Gomez1-for-4, 2B (12), 2 K
Gomez is now 18-for-50 with five doubles and two home runs in June.
1B Spencer Henson0-for-4, 2 K
RF Grant Richardson0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, K, SB (8)
LF Aldenis Sanchez0-for-4, K
3B Marcos Cabrera1-for-2, 2B (8), BB
Cabrera has five doubles in ten June games.
2B Luis Santos1-for-2, RBI, HBP

RHP Zach Messinger: (L, 0-5)  3 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 5 K, 3 HR
Sheesh, he doesn’t deserve to be 0-5.  A rare rough performance by a Hudson Valley starter. His ERA climbs to 2.93 (58.1 IP, 51 H, 26 R, 19 ER, 6 HR, 31 BB, 73 K)
RHP Harrison Cohen2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
2.25 ERA (18.1 IP, 16 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 6 BB, 25 K)
RHP Carlos Gomez1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Nick Paciorek2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
2.31 ERA (23.1 IP, 14 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 11 BB, 29 K). With many right-handed relievers in this system, sometimes a few fly under the radar – Paciorek is 25, so it makes sense that he wouldn’t be talked about as much. But he is doing a solid job.

Tampa (32-35) (Defeated Ft. Myers, 5-3)

2B Jared Serna1-for-4, 2B (14), RS
Even when Serna has a period where he “slows down” (5-for-25 in his last six games), it doesn’t appear as if he is slumping. In this case, three of those five hits are doubles and one is a home run. He is hitting .303/.367/.520.
CF Anthony Hall1-for-3, HR (6), RBI, RS
Hall has homered in back-to-back games and three times in his last five games. Defensively, he has started 19 games in CF, 12 games in RF, and eight games in LF.
C Agustin Ramirez2-for-4, HR (7), 3 RBI, RS
His 3-run HR with two outs in the bottom of the 8th turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. He is hitting .250/.393/.409 in 224 PA with 43 walks and 40 strikeouts.
LF Christopher Familia1-for-3, BB, 2 K
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, RS, K
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-3
DH Tayler Aguilar1-for-3, RBI
1B Jake Palmer0-for-3
RF Felix Negueis0-for-3, 2 K

RHP Sean Hermann7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, HR
A much-needed performance by Hermann. The 20-year-old now sports a 5.98 ERA in 58.2 IP (73 H, 42 R, 39 ER, 6 HR, 22 BB, 49 K). He generates a ton of ground balls and his BABIP is a bit high at .366.
RHP Shane Gray (W, 2-2): 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
2.79 ERA (29 IP, 23 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 14 BB, 33 K)

FCL Yankees (8-6) (Lost to the Tigers, 5-3)

3B Enmanuel Tejeda1-for-4, RS, 3 K
RF Willy Montero0-for-4, 2 K
SS Hans Montero2-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, SB (5)
.319/.522/.617 in 67 PA
CF John Cruz: 0-for-3, SF, RBI, 2 K

RHP Cam Schlittler3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K
8.2 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 6 BB, 10 K. He had one bad outing (6 R in 2 IP last time out)
RHP Osiel Rodriguez1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
0.93 ERA (9.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 15 K). FSL! FSL!
RHP Montana Semmell: 1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Sebastian Keane1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

CF Ramiro Altagracia1-for-5, 2B (2), 2 RBI, 2 K
1B Carlos Herrera2-for-3, 2 2B (2), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K

RHP Joshawn Lampson2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Christopher Medina1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Medina’s 2023 debut.

DSL Yankees (10-3) (Lost to the Angels, 9-0)

CF Brando Mayea0-for-3
Mayea left the game early – but hopefully, that was due to the score and a chance to get him a few innings off.

Yankees MILB 6/11: Drew Thorpe Ks 12

News:

As a follow-up to yesterday’s note on Oswald Peraza, it appears he is out of action due to illness. He isn’t hurt. He hasn’t been traded. They don’t have him on standby to replace Anthony Volpe

RHP Tanner Myatt was promoted to Scranton, as their pitching staff was depleted during yesterday’s doubleheader. Drafted in the 11th round back in the 2018 draft, Myatt is a hard-throwing pitcher with control and injury concerns. This year for Somerset, he has compiled a 5.16 ERA (5.20 FIP) over 22.2 innings with a 23.6% K and 18.9% BB. The likelihood is decent that he probably will head back down to Somerset once things settle down – but you never know.

Scranton (29-33) (Defeated Norfolk, 7-4)

RF Estevan Florial2-for-4, HR (14), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Florial extends his on-base streak to 30. He is hitting .309/.411/.617 in 224 PA (10 doubles, 3 triples, 14 HR, 34 RBI, 40 R, 34 BB, 67 K (29.9%), 12-for-18 SB).
DH Franchy Cordero: 1-for-3, RS, 2 BB, K
1B Andres Chaparro0-for-5, 4 K
Rip up the boxscore and never look at it again.
LF Elijah Dunham0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, K
.223/.340/.332 in 238 plate appearances.
2B Jamie Westbrook2-for-3, HR (8), 4 RBI, RS, BB
There are reasons that go beyond statistics, but I am still surprised that a player who consistently hits double-digit home runs and has versatility has yet to receive a big league chance after 1,038 minor league games.
C Carlos Narvaez2-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS, K
Narvaez is hitting .281 (16-for-57) with more walks (18) than strikeouts (16) since his promotion.
CF Brandon Lockridge1-for-4, 2B (1), RS, K
SS Jesus Bastidas0-for-3, BB, 2 K
3B Wilmer Difo1-for-4, K, CS (3)

LHP Tanner Tully6.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, HR
The Railriders needed some length this afternoon and got it from Tully.
RHP Tanner Myatt: (W, 1-0)  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
Earning a win in your debut is always a nice touch.
RHP Matt Bowman (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Somerset (34-22) (Mauled Hartford, 10-2)

SS Trey Sweeney2-for-5, 2B (12), RS
Sweeney is now the owner of a 9-game hitting streak (12-for-41; .293). He has four doubles in his last six games.
CF Jasson Dominguez: 2-for-4, SF, 2 RBI, RS, K, SB (15)
.210/.364/.392 in 236 PA. He has 12 runs batted in so far in June (11 games)
DH Austin Wells0-for-4, BB, 2 K
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-4, HR (10), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Rumfield has homered in three straight games and in four of his last five games. He is hitting .235/.330/.470 in 176 plate appearances. His BABIP is only .210, so there might be more average to come.
3B Tyler Hardman1-for-5, RS, 2 K
2B Caleb Durbin: 3-for-5, 3 RBI, RS, SB (14)
Durbin is up to 29 stolen bases between here and Hudson Valley. He is hitting .271/.346/.396 since his promotion with an 8/4 BB/K rate.
C Anthony Seigler0-for-4
LF Jeisson Rosario: 1-for-2, HR (8), RBI, RS, K
Rosario was ejected.
LF Max Burt: 0-for-1, RS, BB, K
RF Aaron Palensky: 4-for-4, 2B (3), HR (2), 2 RBI, 2 RS, SB (4)
This is what you call production from the bottom of the order!  Palensky is hitting .241/.465/.552 in 43 PA since his promotion and .331/.441/.708 in 154 plate appearances overall (12 doubles, 2 triples, 14 HR, 38 RBI, 40 R, 14-for-14 SB)

RHP Clayton Beeter: (W, 5-2)  5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
2.13 ERA (55 IP, 41 H, 13 R, 13 ER, 3 HR, 29 BB, 69 K). The walks are high – though he has shown slight improvement in that category from last year. The overall results are certainly very good.
RHP Zac Houston1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, HR
RHP Danny Watson1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Justin Wilson1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (33-24) (Shut down Jersey Shore (again), 1-0)

SS Alexander Vargas: 2-for-4, RS, SB (8)
Vargas needed a day like this badly.
2B Ben Cowles1-for-2, 2 BB
.281/.355/.445. He is on a 5-game hitting streak and could be seeing himself in Somerset soon enough. He can play 2B/SS/3B, so nobody is really going to “block” him.
DH Josh Breaux1-for-3, BB, K
Breaux has played 11 games down here on his “rehab” stint. He hasn’t done much but this is a bit of a longer stretch than is typical.
1B Rafael Flores1-for-4, 2B (8), RBI, K
.305/.361/.372 in 180 plate appearances (8 doubles, 1 HR, 17 RBI, 16 R, 15 BB, 46 K). The 25.6% K rate is certainly a bit high for a player who relies more on contact than power, but he has hit well. It is probably not a first baseman’s profile (unless he improves that power), but if he can stick behind the plate…
RF Anthony Garcia0-for-4, 4 K
C Antonio Gomez: 2-for-4, 2B (11), 2 K, CS (1)
.239/.306/.348 in 175 plate appearances. Entering June, his triple slash was .205/.272/.280 after his dreadful May, so we are at least seeing some improvement.
LF Grant Richardson0-for-2, BB, K
CF Aldenis Sanchez0-for-3, 2 K
3B Eduardo Torrealba1-for-3, K

RHP Drew Thorpe: (W, 5-1)  7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 12 K
This is pure domination. Like Chase Hampton, this is Thorpe’s first professional season and they were aggressive with him. In both cases, it looks like the right move. Season: 2.91 ERA (58.2 IP, 48 H, 23 R, 19 ER, 4 HR, 20 BB, 69 K). He has tossed 15 scoreless innings in his last two starts and could be in line for a promotion (along with Hampton himself)
RHP Jack Neely: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
1.57 ERA (23 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 34 K). The Renegades are loaded with pitching talent.
RHP Carlos Gomez (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Tampa (25-31) (Lost to Lakeland, 9-5. They started the game red hot again as they appeared headed to their 4th straight 10+ run game (5 runs in first two innings), but they finally slowed down)

2B Jared Serna2-for-4, 2B (11), HR (11), 3 RBI, 2 RS
This little guy continues to pack a lot of punch. He is now hitting .321/.384/.541 and is 9-for-23 with two doubles and three home runs during his 5-game hitting streak.
CF Anthony Hall0-for-4, 2 K
Hall’s hitting streak is snapped at 9. He is hitting .272/.390/.419 in 164 plate appearances.
C Agustin Ramirez0-for-2, SF, RBI
I am not sure why Ramirez needed to leave the game.
  C Omar Martinez0-for-1, K
SS Brenny Escanio: 0-for-4, 2 K
DH Matt Pita0-for-4, K
LF Christopher Familia: 1-for-2, RS, 2 HBP
Familia increases his hitting streak to seven (well-deserved after getting hit by two pitches!)
3B Jesus Rodriguez2-for-4, 2 2B (6), RBI, RS
Rodriguez has five straight multi-hit games and seven multi-hit games during his 9-game hitting streak. He is all the way up to .301/.372/.411 in 165 plate appearances.
RF Tayler Aguilar1-for-3, 2 K
1B Jake Palmer0-for-2, RS, BB
Palmer’s Low-A debut. At 24 years old, he wasn’t going to stay in the FCL for long!

RHP Baron Stuart: (L, 1-4)  5.2 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 2 HR
RHP Ocean Gabonia1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Adam Stone: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Stone cranked it up to just under 96 MPH. He threw a lot of cutters today, mixing in his 4-seamer, curve, and slider.

FCL Yankees (3-2)

Day off.

DSL Yankees (5-0) and the DSL Bombers (5-0)

Both had the day off.

Yankees MILB 6/6: Roderick Arias Hits a Slam

News:

The FCL Yankees and the two DSL squads started their seasons on Monday. I will report on them below, but I don’t typically type up full lineups or anything for those games.

Scranton (27-30)

Their game against Norfolk was postponed due to air quality concerns (due to the fires in Quebec).

Somerset (30-21) (Shut down Hartford, 4-0)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-3, 2B (9), RS, BB, K, SB (9)
CF Jasson Dominguez0-for-4, K
C Austin Wells1-for-3, 2B (6), BB, K
Wells is 6-for-19 in June with a pair of doubles and 6 RBI.
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-3, BB, 2 K
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-4, HR (7), RBI, RS
Rumfield has already blown past his personal best for home runs in a season. If he is tapping into some power, there can be something to watch here.
2B Caleb Durbin0-for-3, RS, BB
DH Anthony Seigler2-for-4, 2B (4), K, CS (3)
Seigler has a 5-game hitting streak going (6-for-16)
LF Jeisson Rosario: 1-for-2, SF, RBI, BB
RF Aaron Palensky1-for-3, HR (1), RBI, RS, K
Palensky hit 12 home runs for Hudson Valley earlier this season. He leads the organization in homers.

RHP Clayton Beeter: (W, 4-2) 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 11 K
Beeter has two 11-K games this season. Stats: 2.34 ERA (50 IP, 37 H, 13 R, 13 ER, 3 HR, 28 BB, 63 K)
RHP Alex Mauricio2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
4.40 ERA (14.1 IP, 14 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 HR, 4 BB, 14 K)
RHP Steven Jennings1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

Hudson Valley (30-22) (Crushed Jersey Shore, 13-1)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-5, RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-5, 2B (7), 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
DH Josh Breaux0-for-5, BB
1B Rafael Flores2-for-6, RBI, RS, 3 K
Flores is hitting .315. He has 12 multi-hit games.
RF Anthony Garcia2-for-4, 2 RS, 2 BB
C Antonio Gomez1-for-4, 2 RS, HBP, 2 K
Gomez increases his hitting streak to 6 (9-for-21)
2B Ben Cowles3-for-4, HR (6), SF, 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
Cowles started the season 4-for-29. He is 33-for-105 (.314) since. This is his first 3-hit game this year.
LF Grant Richardson: 4-for-4, 3 RS, HBP
Richardson is bound to go through a hot streak, given his .200 BABIP entering tonight. This is his second career 4-hit game (6/16/2022)
3B Marcos Cabrera: 2-for-4, 2 2B (6), 5 RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
Bottom of the order thunder! Cabrera sets a new personal best for RBI in a game. He hasn’t done much hitting since his rookie league days.

LHP Joel Valdez4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 2 K, 5 HB (yes, FIVE)
LHP Josh Maciejewski: (W, 1-0)  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Maciejewski stranded the bases loaded for Valdez in the 5th.
RHP Mason Vinyard1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
LHP Clay Aguilar1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.38 ERA (13.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 9 BB, 20 K)
RHP Harrison Cohen1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (22-30) (Defeated Lakeland, 7-6, in 11 innings)

2B Jared Serna0-for-6, 2 K
I bet Serna doesn’t have many 0-for-6s on his lifetime resume, going back to when he was 4-5 years old.
RF Anthony Hall1-for-5, K, SB (3)
Hall now has a 7-game hitting streak.
C Agustin Ramirez: 1-for-2, 2 RS, 3 BB, 2 SB (6)
Ramirez has drawn 12 walks in his last six games (including a 5-walk performance)
SS Brenny Escanio: 2-for-5, 3B (2), RBI, RS, K
Escanio can draw walks but hasn’t yet shown that he can hit consistently. This is a nice game for him.
CF Nelson Medina0-for-5, 2 K
DH Christopher Familia2-for-5, 2B (1), HR (3), 2 RBI, 3 RS
Familia has three home runs in five games this season.
LF Tayler Aguilar1-for-5, 2B (9), RBI, 2 K
Doubles account for 50% of Aguilar’s hits this season. You do the math.
3B Jesus Rodriguez2-for-5, RBI
Rodriguez drove home the winning run in the 11th.
1B Omar Martinez1-for-5, HR (5), RBI, RS, 2 K

RHP Hayden Merda5.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, HR
Last three starts: 17.2 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 8 BB, 16 K
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Manny Ramirez0.2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Cole Ayers1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Yorlin Calderon: (W, 2-1) 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
This is what you want to do if you are pitching with the ghost runner on base. Season: 1.95 ERA (27.2 IP, 21 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 35 K). A very impressive stat line. He is 21 years old.

FCL Yankees (1-1) (Defeated the Tigers, 8-6)

SS Roderick Arias2-for-6, HR (1), 5 RBI, RS
The home run was a grand slam and the RBI are a new personal best for Arias. The 18-year-old bonus baby ($4 million) put up a .194/.379/.370 line in 140 plate appearances in the DSL last season.
2B Keiner Delgado2-for-3, 2B (1), 2 RS, 3 BB, K
While Arias had a much-publicized signing bonus, it is much harder to find information on Delgado. He emerged on radars last season when he hit .310/.504/.506 with 34 stolen bases in 52 games in the DSL. Like Jared Serna, Delgado has a short stature which will inevitably lead to Jose Altuve comparisons. I would try to avoid those kinds of comparisons.
DH Enmanuel Tejeda2-for-2, RS, 2 BB, SB (1)
Tejeda homered on Opening Day yesterday. Listed as a SS (he may not play there too much with Arias around), the 18-year-old hit .289/.463/.493 with 41 walks and 25 strikeouts in 46 games for the DSL squad last season.
C Edinson Duran: 1-for-2, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, BB
Duran is a smallish 20-year-old catcher who hit .341/.437/.647 in 29 DSL games last season. If you aren’t yet catching on, DSL statistics can get a little wacky.
RF-CF Jake Palmer0-for-3, RS, 2 BB, KK
Palmer was signed as an undrafted free agent out of UCLA last year. He is already 24 years old.

RHP Carlos Lagrange4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Lagrange is a tall kid (6’7″) who struck out 43 batters in 33 innings for the DSL last season while only allowing ten hits. As you may suspect with a pitcher of his size, he needs to work a bit on control (19 BB last season)
RHP Osiel Rodriguez (S, 1): 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Seemingly here forever, Rodriguez is still only 21 years old. After starting four games in 2019, he hasn’t made a start since. Rodriguez had a cup of coffee with Low-A Tampa in 2022.

I have nothing of note to mention about the DSL squads today.

Yesterday, bonus baby Brando Mayea ($4.35 million) doubled in his first at-bat and promptly left the game. He did not play today.
