Yankees MILB 9/2: Spencer Jones: Double, Triple

Scranton (74-56)

The Railriders had the day off.  Rochester and Worcester, the two teams Scranton is battling for the second-half title, play each other this week. Tonight, Worcester won to pull within 0.5 games of first.

Second-half standings:
Rochester: 33-25
Worcester: 32-25
Scranton: 31-25

They do not makeup games for playoff purposes in the minors. Hence, the “loss column” isn’t quite as important.

Somerset (66-59) (Defeated Binghamton, 6-5. They are within 2 games of Portland with two weeks left in the season (Somerset has 12 more games))

CF Spencer Jones: 2-for-4, 2B (26), 3B (5), RS, 2 K
Jones has a 9-game hitting streak (15-for-36; 6 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR). Somerset’s season ends on 9/15, one week before Scranton’s. In 2021, the Yankees promoted Oswald Peraza to Scranton for 8 games. In 2022, Anthony Volpe played 22 games for the Railriders. Jones may receive a cup of coffee to finish out 2024.

1B Tyler Hardman: 1-for-4, HR (8), 2 RBI, RS, 3 K
Hardman has 34 homers in 139 Double-A games. The rest of his offensive game hasn’t been there this season, and one wonders if last year’s injury is playing a role.

The fact that Vargas has shown some bat in Double-A (.717 OPS) increases his chances to be selected in the Rule 5 this winter. Strange things happen, but I doubt the Yankees will protect him.

Schmidt had a strict 70-pitch limit (they pulled him in the middle of an AB, with a 1-2 count)

Hudson Valley (68-57)

The Renegades had the day off.

Their season ends on Sunday. With six games left, the second-half standings look like this:

A 4-2 week clinches a playoff berth regardless of what other teams do.

Tampa (54-69) 

The Tarpons had the day off.

Their season ends on Sunday. With six games left, the second-half standings look like this:

Tampa: 30-27

Their chances are non-existent as Fort Myers and Lakeland play this week.

Correct, the number of games played is uneven. That’s the nature of this league, where weather-related cancellations are common.

Durbin is up to .300/.417/.478 at this level with more walks (42) than strikeouts (29). SLG, by year: 2021: .304 (only 62 PA); 2022: .372; 2023: .427; 2024: .452 (includes his time on a rehab stint). Durbin is an overachiever – will his game translate to MLB? I can guarantee you this: He will get his chance to prove it can.
CF Jasson Dominguez: 0-for-4
Dominguez could only muster a max exit velocity of 95.9 tonight. He’s done as a prospect, as far as I am concerned.

Trammell has 13 homers in 46 July/August games.

Schmidt tossed 58 pitches. Looking at his Savant data tonight, everything looked good. He threw all his pitches, maxing out at 95 MPH with his sinker (his 94.4 MPH average was in line with his 94.2 average in MLB this year). I don’t know when he gets to MLB, but I assume he will make one more rehab start (?)
RHP Alex Mauricio: (W, 4-0)  2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
1.71 ERA (42 IP, 29 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 22 BB, 45 K). I maintain that Mauricio will get his MLB chance, even if it isn’t with the Yankees.

A bit concerning: Burdi’s average velocity tonight (94.3) was well under his 97.5 MLB average.

Lombard has back-to-back multi-hit efforts (hit a double in both games). He is now 13-for-77 since his promotion (he started 1-for-28. He is 12-for-49 (.245) since then and has three multi-hit efforts in his last eight games). Consider it a win if he can show signs of adjustment over the last few weeks of the season.

At this level: 2.67 ERA (27 IP, 18 H, 10 R, 8 ER, 1 HR, 17 BB, 18 K). These numbers are skewed (in a bad way) by a 3.1 IP/5 ER/6 BB/1 K emergency start on May 25th.

It’s good to see that Castillo’s injury (suffered in a collision in the outfield) wasn’t serious. He hit the walk-off single in the 10th. Since promotion: 9-for-27 (2 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 5 R). Overall: .263/.387/.431 in 364 PA (19 doubles, 2 triples, 9 HR, 44 RBI, 56 R, 17-for-22 SB, 16.5% BB, 19.8% K). The 21-year-old is having a nice, consistent campaign.

Carr continues his recent stretch of strong pitching. His last 7 starts: 1.01 ERA (26.2 IP, 19 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 14 BB, 21 K). Overall: 4.69 ERA (96 IP, 86 H, 60 R, 50 ER, 5 HR, 51 BB, 89 K). He entered his debut season with a lot of buzz. However, he stumbled for a while before finding his footing. I don’t think they give him a late-season Double-A start, but it is possible.

RHP Huey Morrill: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
At this level: 3.30 ERA (43.2 IP, 38 H, 21 R, 16 ER, 6 HR, 14 BB, 45 K). Morrill was listed as a shortstop when the Yankees signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State last year (for good reason: He played 148 games in the field for Oklahoma State while making only 17 appearances on the hill)

This is how you keep the “Manfred Man” from scoring. Since being acquired: 6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K. The Yankees acquired the 23-year-old from the Astros for Caleb Ferguson.
