Yankees MILB 7/25: Ben Rice is Lovin’ Double-A

News:

The Yankees have released a pair of veteran relievers.

RHP Michael Feliz, signed on May 18th, was released from his contract. He reportedly will sign with a team in Japan. The veteran pitched to a decent 3.38 ERA in only 13.1 innings with a 15/5 K/BB.
LHP D.J. Snelten was also cut. Snelten, who hadn’t pitched since making 20 starts with the Chicago Dogs (Independent) in 2019, was an interesting story but he simply did not perform. He compiled a 7.50 ERA in 30 games with Scranton, with a 48/42 K/BB over 36 innings.

RHP Bailey Dees was promoted from Hudson Valley to Somerset today, reuniting with former bullpen mate Danny Watson to form a towering duo. Dees, who stands 6’8″, pitched to a 1.74 ERA and 59/15 K/BB ratio over 41.1 innings. He was the Yankees’ 18th-round pick in the 2021 draft out of Penn State.

Florial now has a 5-game hitting streak (7-for-17). He has three doubles during the streak.

SS Trey Sweeney: 1-for-4, HR (13), RBI, RS, K
The home run was a lead-off blast. Sweeney is hitting .253/.369/.437 in 396 PA. In July, he is hitting .288/.413/.455 in 17 games (3 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 14 R, 12 BB, 15 K). He has shown more against RHP (.856 OPS) than LHP (.630) but there is no reason for concern. Just something to watch.
RF Willie Calhoun: 2-for-3, BB
CF Jasson Dominguez: 1-for-3, RS, BB, K, SB (26), CS (6)
.220/.349/.368 in 392 PA. In 18 July games, Dominguez is hitting .307/.381/.427.

Since promotion: 10-for-17 (.588) with three home runs in four games. Overall, Rice is hitting .365/.516/.646 in 128 spectacular plate appearances. I don’t know if catching is part of the long-term plan, but the Yankees seem to have an intriguing hitter here.

Jones now has a 6-game hitting streak (11-for-27 (.407); 2 doubles, 2 HR, 6 RBI). This is his 10th 3+ hit game this season (including one on 7/21). It’s been a season of streaks for Jones, but the overall resume is a good one.

C Austin Wells was promoted to Scranton today, and instantly placed in the cleanup spot.

Wells, the Yankees’ first-round pick in the 2020 COVID draft, hit .248/.343/.460 in 113 Double-A games with 22 doubles, 1 triple, 23 HR, and 93 RBI. Whether he can stick behind the plate is still a matter of debate.

Scranton (43-47; 9-6 in the second half) (Lead Worcester, 4-0, in the 4th. The game was suspended due to a power outage. They will conclude this tomorrow afternoon (playing out the entire 9 innings) before a 7-inning nightcap)

3B Tyler Hardman: 1-for-3, HR (23), 2 RBI, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
A new career best (23 HR in 71 games this year; 22 in 111 games last year). Hardman hits his bombs in bunches. He hit home runs in three straight games in early June and had a stretch where he hit six home runs in six games (including three in one game). While he has enough pop to make it to the big leagues, it is the strikeouts that are a problem: 101 in 302 PA (33.4%).

1.20 ERA (30 IP, 23 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 10 BB, 45 K). Barclay hadn’t allowed a home run since September 15, 2021. He tossed 67.1 homerless innings in 2022. You are looking at a legit swingman type of prospect here who can probably start, pitch in the middle innings, and even give you some late-inning production. You are probably thinking about guys like Ramiro Mendoza or Alfredo Aceves, etc.

This is Serna’s first stolen base since June 20th. It was only his second attempt this month. Just one of those weird things. Serna is 21-for-69 (.304). He hit .310 in April, .305 in May, and .263 in June (though that came with five home runs and 21 RBI). Just remarkable consistency.

.292/.369/.432 in 294 PA. His 6-game hitting streak is snapped.

The 24-year-old is on a rehab assignment. He has made it as high as High-A Hudson Valley, where he pitched to a 4.41 ERA in 32.2 innings last season (48/12 K/BB)

Mayea is 9-for-41 in July, but has walked 12 times.

Ogando is a 19-year-old right-handed bat who has played in 58 games at this level over the last two seasons (.330/.406/.519 in 226 PA)

Sosa pitched in 12 games back in his 2019 debut season, posting a 2.21 ERA (though that came with a 9/12 K/BB ratio), Then, he disappeared for four years and is back now. Injuries suck.

DSL Bombers (15-17) (Destroyed DSL Miami, 12-1. Talk about a bunch of baserunners: They compiled 13 hits and 14 walks while Miami commited three errors. This game had real 28-1 DSL potential. Trust me, stuff like that has happened before at this level!)

SS Ovandy Frias: 3-for-5, RBI, 2 RS, BB, 2 K, 3 SB (10)
Have yourself a morning/afternoon, Ovandy! It is hard to find much out there on the 19-year-old, who is in his debut season.

The 18-year-old right-handed bat hit very well in his debut 2022 season but has yet to repeat that in 2023. Perhaps today is the start of something good.
CF Geyber Blanco: 3-for-5, 2 2B (11), 2 RBI, K
I pay close attention when 17-year-olds start raking in their debut season. So far, Blanco is doing that: .333/.405/.480 with 11 doubles in 84 plate appearances. He was just signed back in February.

The 18-year-old left-handed bat is hitting .314/.442/.446 in 45 games at this level going back to last season.

Ferreira is already 20 years old. This is his first professional home run!

I have expressed some concern about OF Jasson Dominguez‘s struggles in Double-A. While some of the numbers aren’t good, remind yourself of this: Dominguez made his Double-A debut in 2022 at the age of 19. At 19, Ezequiel Duran was struggling down in Pulaski (at the time, a Yankees’ short-season affiliate) as he hit .201/.251/.311 (48 wRC+; 3.8% BB, 28.7% K). He started to take off in 2019 and was eventually a part of the package for (ugh) Joey Gallo in 2021.

No two prospects are the same. I am not trying to convince you that Dominguez is fine because of what Duran has become. What I am trying to say is that we have to be patient sometimes. “We” includes “me.”

A report from Kiley McDaniel indicates that the Yankees may treat the 2023 MLB draft like they did the 2014 international signing period. Essentially, ignore the rules (well, more like not caring about the rules), load up on premium high school talent, and accept the penalties.

LHP Carlos Rodon started his rehab stint in Somerset tonight.

IF Caleb Durbin, who is off to an impressive start in his first season with the Yankees’ organization, was placed on the injured list today for Somerset. Between Hudson Valley and Somerset, Durbin is hitting .292/.394/.400 in 216 plate appearances with 29 stolen bases in 33 attempts. He has struck out in only 6.9% of his plate appearances, which is second in all of MILB (if I don’t include players in the DSL). Only Cesar Prieto (Double-A, BAL) has a lower rate (6.8%).

Durbin was part of the package (along with RHP Indigo Diaz) that the Yankees acquired from the Braves for LHP Lucas Luetge this past winter. The Braves designated Luetge for assignment back in May and outrighted him down to Triple-A once he cleared waivers.

Arias breaks out of his slump and hopefully, this starts a new upward trend for the ultra-talented teenager.

Montero had a .592 OPS in 2021 and a .606 OPS in 2022 (both seasons played in the DSL). Some may have already started to sour on him, but he is off to a hot start in 2023.

Tejeda is hitting .345/.583/.586 in 48 plate appearances with 16 walks. I keep trying to tell you that the FCL and DSL are crazy as heck leagues.

Cruz has 14 RBI in his last two games. He is 10-for-37 with 19 RBI in nine games. Good luck finding anything that even resembles a reliable scouting report, but if he keeps this up, we’ll start seeing some.

Palencia’s first three hits of 2023 (3-for-14). He has yet to strike out in 2023 and has 25 in 301 career PA (8.3%).

This is a rehab appearance for the 26-year-old. Last season, for Scranton, he went 9-0 with a 3.42 ERA in 68.1 innings with a 33.3% K and 11.1% BB. The biggest issue was the 11 home runs allowed.

Nice outing, but Polimir is already 22 years old.

C Josh Breaux‘s rehab stint is finally over and he is on his way to Scranton. RHP Matt Sauer, who pitched one of the best games in the minors last season, will continue his rehab stint with Hudson Valley (pitched in a few games in the FCL).

Breaux joins Carlos Narvaez and Rodolfo Duran as catching options in Scranton, at least for as long as Ben Rortvedt is out.

Sauer will eventually end up in either Somerset or Scranton. He only made four starts for Somerset last year, so he will likely go there.

RHP Omar Gonzalez: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 6 K. The 17-year-old pitched to a 0.44 ERA in 20.1 innings at this level last year, striking out 36 hitters while walking nine. I doubt he sticks in the DSL much longer if this keeps up…

 

Yankees MILB 6/7: Austin Wells Drives Home 2

News:

The Yankees have selected the contract of OF Billy McKinney to replace Aaron Judge. McKinney, on his second tour with the Yankees organization, was hitting well in Scranton (.274/.388/.511 in 40 games) and should find himself getting some playing time over the next few weeks.

“Why McKinney and not Estevan Florial?” I don’t disagree with those who would rather see Florial than McKinney, who hasn’t done much with his 768 MLB plate appearances (.206/.277/.387). Furthermore, in his most recent sample size, he went 5-for-52 in 23 games for Oakland last season. We could have a situation where the Yankees simply do not want to push Florial through the waiver process again once they need to send him back down. He slipped through after Spring Training, but that is a tough time for any player to be designated for assignment. Teams have already set their 26-man rosters and may not see a need to claim a player like Florial, who is not a sure bet to be anything useful in MLB. Now? Teams have evaluated their rosters for two months. Injuries have occurred. There may be more of a market to pick up Florial for “free” and give him a bench role. Whatever the case may be, McKinney is here in the short term and will be battling it out with Jake Bauers and Willie Calhoun to be here for the longer term.

The Yankees have promoted RHP Luis Velasquez from Tampa to Hudson Valley. Signed by the Yankees in 2019 (I can’t find any news on his bonus, so it likely wasn’t much), Velasquez has moved up the chain in a reasonable amount of time. Like with many prospects, the lost 2020 season likely impacted him in some way.

There isn’t much to dislike about Velasquez, other than an elevated BB rate (which isn’t uncommon amongst Yankees relief prospects). This season for Tampa, he compiled a 1.05 ERA (3.21 FIP) over 25.2 innings with a 32.7% K, 14.9% BB, and 69.4% GB.

On August 5, 2019, Velasquez allowed a home run. Why is that a big deal? He hasn’t allowed one since. Overall, he has allowed that one home run in 84.2 career innings (0.1 HR/9). His ability to keep the ball on the ground and strike hitters out is tantalizing. The control can be worked on.

Durbin is now 27-for-31 stealing bases between here and Hudson Valley (44 games). He stole 31 bases in 105 games last season. As for the strikeouts, he still has only two in 92 plate appearances at this level.

Lockridge’s first game since 5/24. He was hitting well prior to his injury (.310/.400/.494 with 17 stolen bases) so hopefully he can pick up where he left off.

C Mickey Gasper: 3-for-4, 2 RS, K

RHP Gray Fenter: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 8 K, HR
Fenter’s best start as a member of the Yankees’ organization. He is 27, so he is purely a depth arm.
RHP Danny Watson: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Watson hasn’t allowed a run in 3.2 innings since his promotion. This is his first strikeout since moving to Somerset after striking out 39 in 24.1 innings for Hudson Valley. Every level is an adjustment.

.311/.371/.495. It is the first time his SLG has dropped below .500 since May 4th, and he is 1-for-14 in his last three games after going 8-for-13 in his previous four games. Baseball!

Rodriguez has hit safely in all six June games (12-for-24). He struggled mightily in May, so it is good to see him get going again. Overall, he is hitting .286/.356/.368.

Martinez is off to a 5-for-15 start in June. 
DH Tayler Aguilar: 1-for-4, 2 K
RF Felix Negueis: 2-for-3, K
A needed game for Negueis, who entered tonight 3-for-61.

RHP Kris Bow: (W, 1-1) 3.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
This is Bow’s first professional victory. His last two outings: 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 8 K (he allowed ten earned runs in 2.2 innings during his first two outings). Bow is throwing mid-90s sinkers. That’ll work.
RHP Matt Keating: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
2.63 ERA (24 IP, 20 H, 10 R, 7 ER, 2 HR, 12 BB, 36 K). He has at least one strikeout in 14 of his 16 appearances (12 of those games feature 2+ strikeouts). He doesn’t throw hard (90-92, topped out at 93.1 tonight), so I assume much of his swing-and-miss comes on his curve and slider.
RHP Adam Stone (S, 1): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
Stone’s first career save was an adventure, but he got the job done. He was throwing in the mid-90s.
