Yankees MILB 6/22: Brock Selvidge Ks 10

News:

C Ben Rortvedt‘s stint on the IL didn’t last long as he was in the Scranton lineup tonight. The Railriders are now carrying four catchers (Rortvedt, Rodolfo Duran, Carlos Narvaez, and Josh Breaux). They can use the 1B and DH slots to help distribute some at-bats (Rortvedt, Narvaez, and Duran all played tonight), but they also need to make sure these players get in their time behind the plate as well.

SS Oswald Peraza missed his third straight game this evening. OF Everson Pereira (Somerset) is still out of the lineup, as well.

Since they had a need for additional bodies in Scranton, UTIL Max Burt was promoted to Scranton. Drafted in the 28th round in the 2018 draft out of Northeastern, Burt is an organizational utility player. This isn’t his first stint in Scranton (played 36 games back in 2021). When I see a player like Burt, I think of someone you are going to see coaching, scouting, or whatever they wish to do in baseball some day.

.296/.385/.619. After hitting 9 HR in May, he has 7 in June. That said, he hasn’t been on top of his game in June. He is only 18-for-74 (.243) with four walks and 22 strikeouts. He walked 15 times in May, so his discipline has taken a bit of a fall.

His average has fallen back down to .198. I think everyone should have at least SOME level of concern, right? He hasn’t shown much progress as the season has gone along. It’s not like the Yankees are loaded with upper-level OF prospects, especially if Everson Pereira is going to go down to injury every year.

Wells is surprisingly hitting only .247 at this level, but you still feel confident that he has conquered Double-A. Some of that is due to the power he has shown (9 doubles, 9 HR in 38 games).

Yankees MILB 6/20: Tyrone Yulie: 7 No-Hit Innings

News:

LHP Carlos Rodon started his rehab stint in Somerset tonight.

IF Caleb Durbin, who is off to an impressive start in his first season with the Yankees’ organization, was placed on the injured list today for Somerset. Between Hudson Valley and Somerset, Durbin is hitting .292/.394/.400 in 216 plate appearances with 29 stolen bases in 33 attempts. He has struck out in only 6.9% of his plate appearances, which is second in all of MILB (if I don’t include players in the DSL). Only Cesar Prieto (Double-A, BAL) has a lower rate (6.8%).

Durbin was part of the package (along with RHP Indigo Diaz) that the Yankees acquired from the Braves for LHP Lucas Luetge this past winter. The Braves designated Luetge for assignment back in May and outrighted him down to Triple-A once he cleared waivers.

It will be noted that he is 23 years old and played 36 games here in 2022 – but he is doing what he needs to do to advance up the chain.

4.29 ERA (42 IP, 23 H, 24 R, 20 ER, 3 HR, 34 BB, 72 K). He is definitely living up to his label as a raw power arm. He hit 98.4 on the gun.

3.77 ERA (31 IP, 24 H, 14 R, 13 ER, 4 HR, 11 BB, 38 K). He started the season slow (7.94 ERA in seven April games) but has been tough to hit since.

FCL Yankees (7-3) (Doubled up the Phillies, 8-4)

Arias breaks out of his slump and hopefully, this starts a new upward trend for the ultra-talented teenager.
SS Hans Montero: 2-for-4, RS, BB, K
Montero had a .592 OPS in 2021 and a .606 OPS in 2022 (both seasons played in the DSL). Some may have already started to sour on him, but he is off to a hot start in 2023.
3B Enmanuel Tejeda: 1-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
Tejeda is hitting .345/.583/.586 in 48 plate appearances with 16 walks. I keep trying to tell you that the FCL and DSL are crazy as heck leagues.
CF John Cruz: 2-for-5, 2 HR (3), 6 RBI, 2 RS
Cruz has 14 RBI in his last two games. He is 10-for-37 with 19 RBI in nine games. Good luck finding anything that even resembles a reliable scouting report, but if he keeps this up, we’ll start seeing some.
C Manuel Palencia: 3-for-3, BB
Palencia’s first three hits of 2023 (3-for-14). He has yet to strike out in 2023 and has 25 in 301 career PA (8.3%).

RHP Zach Greene: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 0 BB, 3 K
This is a rehab appearance for the 26-year-old. Last season, for Scranton, he went 9-0 with a 3.42 ERA in 68.1 innings with a 33.3% K and 11.1% BB. The biggest issue was the 11 home runs allowed.

Nice outing, but Polimir is already 22 years old.
