Yankees MILB 5/15: It’s Serna Day!

News:

I have nothing to offer you.

Scranton (28-12) (Squeaked past Worcester, 1-0)

3B Caleb Durbin0-for-4, SB (18), BB, K
Durbin is second in the International League in SB (Steward Berroa (Buffalo) has 20)
LF Everson Pereira0-for-4, BB, K
.259/.339/.524 (8.5% BB; 33.9% K) in 165 PA. It’s an interesting profile that shows off his power (7 doubles, 10 HR) and swing-and-miss.
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-5, SB (2)
Rumfield has hit safely in 8 of his last 9 games (13-for-34; .382).
DH Taylor Trammell1-for-3, 2B (1), BB, K
Trammell is 4-for-16 with a double since joining the Railriders.
RF Oscar Gonzalez0-for-3, HBP, 2 K
C Luis Torrens0-for-3, BB, K
2B Josh VanMeter0-for-3, SB (2), BB, K
SS Kevin Smith2-for-4, 2 2B (4), RS, K
CF Brandon Lockridge1-for-2, RBI, CS (2), 2 BB
.229/.373/.325 in 102 PA (6 doubles, 1 triple, 0 HR, 12 RBI, 15-for-17 SB). Lockridge hit 39 HR between 2019-2022 (there wasn’t a season in 2020) but has only three in 2023-2024. I still think he can carve out an MLB career.

RHP Clayton Beeter4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 3 K
2.53 ERA (32 IP, 17 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 21 BB, 44 K). Is the wildness what makes him tough to hit? Or would he still be tough to hit if he curtailed the wildness?
RHP Cody Morris: (W, 2-0) 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
1.40 ERA (19.1 IP, 12 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 11 BB, 26 K)
LHP Anthony Misiewicz2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Phil Bickford (S, 4): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
2.40 ERA (15 IP, 13 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 4 BB, 18 K). In MLB, Bickford has been a “meh” reliever with a high K rate (26.6%). This is mostly due to walks and fly balls. Whether the Yankees can find a way to work with this remains to be seen – but if you are a pitcher looking to find new ways to be effective, signing with the Yankees should be near the top of your list.

Somerset (17-17) (Win a pitching duel over Portland, 1-0. This follows a 11-10 loss last night. Baseball!)

CF Spencer Jones0-for-4, 4 K
.237/.306/.361 in 108 PA. There was a point early last year where people were wondering about Jasson Dominguez. We all know how that story ended up. So, we’ll see if Jones can build a similar story in 2024 (not that I expect him to march up to MLB regardless)
DH Oswald Peraza1-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS, K
His home run in the 4th held up.
C Ben Rice0-for-3, 3 K
.246/.374/.467 in 148 PA (14.9% BB; 24.3% K). He is 9-for-41 (.220) in May (1 HR, 8 BB, 8 K).
1B Agustin Ramirez1-for-3, 2B (5), SB (8), K
.284/.403/.638 (15.8% BB; 18.7% K) in 139 PA. His BABIP, which I referenced last night, has normalized (.269). You can disparage “advanced” (not that BABIP is all that advanced) metrics all day – the data showed that a correction was coming for Ramirez and here it is. The Yankees need to decide whether his projected bat is too good to worry about catcher development, even if that development increases trade value.
SS Ben Cowles1-for-2, SB (5)
Cowles left the game after the stolen base.
   PR-3B J.C. Escarra0-for-1, K
3B-SS Jordan Groshans0-for-3
LF Jared Wegner0-for-3
2B Anthony Seigler0-for-2, SB (4), BB, K
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-2, SB (5), BB, 2 K

RHP Blane Abeyta: (W,2-3) 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
4.86 ERA (37 IP, 45 H, 29 R, 20 ER, 4 HR, 8 BB, 28 K)
RHP Yorlin Calderon2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Between Scranton/Somerset/Hudson Valley: 2.18 ERA (20.2 IP, 12 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 19 K)
RHP Kevin Stevens (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (17-15) (Defeated Jersey Shore, 9-3)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-5, 2B (5), SB (6), K
.213/.343/.382 in 108 PA. Riggio is hitting .204 in his first 45 professional games, which is something to monitor. He makes a lot of contact and it is nice to see some extra-base hits in 2024.
SS Jared Serna0-for-1, 3 RS, 4 BB
Serna’s first career 4 BB game (not that it should be common). He is hitting .250/.375/.448 (15.97% BB; 13.9% K) in 144 PA. Going back to 4/28, he is 20-for-55 (.364) with 9 walks and 10 strikeouts. Interestingly, the only three homers he has during this streak were hit on the same day (5/1). Baseball!
CF Jace Avina1-for-3, 2B (9), RS, 2 BB, K
Avina now owns a 10-game hitting streak and is hitting .293/.404/.476 in 99 PA. This is the 20-year-old’s first taste of High-A, and he is holding his own. Last year, in A ball for the Brewers’ organization, he hit .233/.373/.442.  Avina’s .440 BABIP will come down, so we’ll have to see where he settles in.
C Jesus Rodriguez0-for-3, 3 RS, 2 BB
.322/.386/.517 (9.1% BB; 14.4% K) in 132 PA. He is second in the Sally League in average and 6th in slugging percentage. It is easy to see him in Somerset this season. Last year, the Yankees played him in 84 Low-A games before promoting him here. He is at 55 games at this level (his triple slash is a ridiculous .337/.422/.524).
DH Rafael Flores2-for-4, 2B (8), 3 RBI, RS, BB, K
Flores has three multi-hit games in his last four games played.
1B Josh Moylan2-for-5, 3 RBI, RS, K
There’s a hot streak in Moylan somewhere…it hasn’t come out yet.
LF Nelson Medina1-for-4, 2B (2), 2 RBI, BB, 2 K
3B Beau Brewer0-for-4, K
RF Cole Gabrielson1-for-3, BB, K

RHP Baron Stuart: (W, 1-1)  6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
4.13 ERA (24 IP, 23 H, 12 R, 11 ER, 1 HR, 11 BB, 16 K)
RHP Matt Keating2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
3.60 ERA (20 IP, 12 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 8 BB, 24 K). Keating (23) struck out 93 in 65.1 IP for Low-A Tampa last year.
RHP Luis Arejula1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Tampa (11-24) (Defeated Bradenton, 5-0)

SS George Lombard Jr.: 0-for-4, K
DH Tyler Hardman0-for-4, K
Hardman started his rehab here, went to the FCL for one game, and is now back. It makes sense to somebody, and that is all that matters.
3B Roderick Arias: 1-for-3, 2B (5), 2 RS, 2 SB (9), BB, K
I am asked what my honest assessment of Arias is. The answer? I don’t have one. We have to see how he progresses as the season goes along. Earlier in 2024, he was generating some power without the walks. Now, he is walking more but the power has drifted away (only two extra-base hits in May after compiling eight in April). It’s all a part of a process that will take a while to play out.
1B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, RBI, RS, 2 K
Jasso has 16 RBI in 13 May games.
LF Jackson Castillo0-for-2, RS, 2 BB
Castillo is 10-for-36 with 14 walks in May. As is the case with Jasso, he was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2023.
CF Willy Montero: 1-for-2, RBI, RS, 2 BB, K
Montero has hit safely in eight of his last nine games.
2B Hans Montero: 2-for-3, 2B (2), 2 RBI, BB, K
13-for-37 (.351). Last 6 games: 9-for-19. He has four multi-hit games in his last five starts.
C Manuel Palencia1-for-4, K
RF Daury Arias0-for-3

RHP Luis Serna: (W, 2-2)  6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
Brilliance. Season: 5.40 ERA (26.2 IP, 23 H, 16 R, 16 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 31 K). Three May starts: 15.1 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 15 K.  Don’t forget that Serna is only 19 years old.
RHP Jordy Luciano: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
RHP Aaron Nixon: (S, 2) 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
2.33 ERA (19.1 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 HR, 16 BB, 21 K)

FCL (4-4)

Scheduled day off.

Yankees MILB 4/26: Agustin Ramirez’s Big Night

News:

2B Jorbit Vivas, who played in two games since returning from his eye injury, was placed on the 7-day injured list today.

RHP Brian Hendryreceiving buzz in prospect circles, was placed on the 7-day IL today for Hudson Valley. His outing yesterday was short. It is often hard to know if a short outing is a part of a plan or injury. In this case, it was injury.

Scranton (16-8) (Defeated Durham, 6-2)

3B Caleb Durbin1-for-4, RS, CS (1), HBP, K
DH Everson Pereira2-for-5, 2B (6), 2 RS
.256/.340/.593 in 97 PA (6 doubles, 1 triple, 7 HR, 18 RBI, 17 R, 9 BB, 33 K, 2-for-4 SB)
1B T.J. Rumfield2-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Since promotion: 9-for-34 (.265/.316/.353). He has yet to homer in 17 games after hitting 17 HR in 86 games last year (that was the outlier season in his short career)
C Carlos Narvaez: 2-for-4, SF, 2 RBI, RS
2B Luis Torrens: 1-for-4, HBP, K
LF Josh VanMeter0-for-3, RBI, BB, K

LHP Josh Maciejewski2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
LHP Anthony Misiewicz1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Somerset (8-11) (Crushed Reading, 13-2)

CF Spencer Jones: 2-for-4, 2 2B (3), RBI, RS, CS (3), BB, K
Jones is 14-for-40 (3 doubles, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 9 R, 4 BB, 12 K, 3-for-6 SB)
1B Agustin Ramirez: 3-for-4, 2B (1), HR (8), 2 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
I find it funny that Ramirez had no extra-base hits other than home runs entering tonight. He is hitting .246 with a 1.011 OPS (1 double, 8 HR, 17 RBI, 13 R, 12 BB (15.2%), 13 K (16.5%))
C Ben Rice2-for-4, 2B (2), 2 RS, 2 BB, 2 K
Rice is hitting .254 with a .862 OPS (2 doubles, 5 HR, 8 RBI, 15 R, 11 BB (13.1%), 21 K (25%))
3B Ben Cowles1-for-5, RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
Cowles is at .344 with a 1.020 OPS (8 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 12 R, 11 BB, 14 K, 3-for-3 SB)
DH J.C. Escarra2-for-6, 3B (2), 2 RBI, 2 RS
RF Jared Wegner1-for-5, RBI, RS, BB
LF Grant Richardson3-for-6, 2B (6), HR (2), 3 RBI, RS
Richardson is at .281 with an .835 OPS (6 doubles, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 8 R, 4 BB, 15 K). He has hit safely in seven of his last eight games.

SS Alexander Vargas1-for-5, 2B (1), RBI, RS, 2 K

RHP Blane Abeyta: (W, 1-3) 7.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K
Abeyta struck out ten and 11 in games last year.
RHP Tanner Myatt1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Hudson Valley (11-7) (Defeated Bowling Green, 5-1)

CF Jace Avina1-for-3, RBI, HBP, K
Avina is 9-for-25 with a double, home run, and 3 RBI.
SS Jared Serna0-for-4, SB (1), 2 K
Serna hasn’t been able to get on base enough to show off his speed. He stole 29 bases in 37 attempts in 2023.
DH Omar Martinez1-for-4, 2B (1), RS, 2 K
.296/.415/.519 in 65 PA.
2B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-3, 3B (1), RBI, RS, BB
.306/.377/.419 in 69 PA. He continues to hit while playing all over the field.
1B Josh Moylan0-for-3, SF, RBI, 2 K
.225/.385/.300 in 52 PA with a home run, ten walks, and 16 strikeouts.
C Rafael Flores1-for-3, 2B (5), RS, BB, K
3B Kiko Romero1-for-3, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS
RF Nelson Medina0-for-3, 3 K
LF Cole Gabrielson1-for-2, 2B (1), RS, HBP

RHP Sebastian Keane: (W, 1-2) 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K
Keane sets a personal best for strikeouts in a game. Season: 5.63 ERA (16 IP, 19 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 19 K). He has two strong starts and two not-so-great starts. They are building up his innings load.
RHP Matt Keating: (S, 2) 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
11.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 14 K

3B Dylan Jasso0-for-5, 2 K
1B Coby Morales1-for-5, RS, 2 K
LF Jackson Castillo2-for-3, SB (2)
  LF Tayler Aguilar0-for-1
CF Willy Montero0-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, K

Frick is 7-for-24 with five walks and five strikeouts.

2.31 ERA (11.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 7 K). The 6’0″ 21-year-old reached 96.5 MPH with his 4-seamer, though none of his fastballs resulted in whiffs. Just someone to put somewhere on your “watch” list.
RHP Kris Bow2.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

Yankees MILB 9/8: Ben Rice Has a Big Night

News:

Nada. The season is almost over so nobody is making headlines.

Scranton (66-67; 32-27 in the second half) (Lost to Columbus, 10-5)

LF Estevan Florial: 2-for-5, 3 K, SB (25)
Estevan Florial, defined (OK, he isn’t going to hit .400…)
3B Jamie Westbrook: 3-for-4, 2B (18), HR (21), 2 RBI, RS, BB
Westbrook has done a solid job as the veteran utility guy down here. You need these types in your system.
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-5, 2 K
1B Andres Chaparro1-for-5, K
RF Franchy Cordero1-for-5, 2 K
DH Josh Breaux1-for-4, 2B (1), 2 RS, BB, 2 K
CF Brandon Lockridge2-for-4, 2B (9), RS, BB, 2 K
He will get an MLB shot at some point with some team – and I am intrigued to see what he does with it.
2B Wilmer Difo1-for-3, 2 RBI, HBP, K
SS Jesus Bastidas1-for-3, RBI, BB, K

RHP Clayton Beeter: (L, 2-5) 4.1 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 4 BB, 4 K, 2 HR
At this level: 5.89 ERA in 55 IP (53 H, 37 R, 36 ER, 13 HR, 35 BB, 62 K). It is very hard to evaluate this performance, given the offense in the International League – but it still isn’t ideal. The walks are way too high.
LHP Anthony Misiewicz1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 HR
RHP Zac Houston1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Matt Bowman0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Michael Gomez: 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K

Somerset (78-51; 36-25 in the second half) (Defeated Erie, 4-3, in 11 innings)

DH Trey Sweeney1-for-5, BB, K
1B Ben Rice: 4-for-5, 2 2B (12), 2 RBI, RS, BB, SB (7)
Rice walks it off with an RBI single in the 11th. This is his 4th 4-hit game this season and he is hitting .339/.399/.661 at this level (12 doubles, 14 HR, 44 RBI). What more is there to say? The question one needs to ask is where he fits in the Yankees’ plans.
CF Spencer Jones2-for-3, 2 BB
Jones has his average up over .200 (.205; 8-for-39) since his promotion. He is 5-for-12 in his last three games. Can you see him in pinstripes next year? Well, you are seeing Jasson Dominguez this year, so don’t rule anything out.
C Agustin Ramirez0-for-4, K
RF Elijah Dunham0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 SB (21)
Dunham has 33 stolen bases in 40 attempts between here and Scranton.
2B Mickey Gasper1-for-3, HR (5), RBI, RS, BB, SB (7)
LF Grant Richardson0-for-3, BB, 2 K, SB (1)
SS Max Burt0-for-3, BB, K
3B Eduardo Torrealba0-for-3, 2 RS, BB, 2 K

RHP Blane Abeyta6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, HR
5.58 ERA (122.2 IP, 122 H, 79 R, 76 ER, 16 HR, 51 BB, 122 K)
RHP Jesus Liranzo1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Danny Watson: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
At this level: 1.64 ERA (38.1 IP, 18 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 5 HR, 16 BB, 43 K). Overall, he has an 82/25 K/BB in 62.2 IP. How much more development does he need? Perhaps nothing more than spring training games.
LHP Ryan Anderson: (W, 2-1) 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (69-60; 30-33 in the second half)

Their game against Jersey Shore was postponed. They will try to play two tomorrow.

Tampa (61-67; 30-32 in the second half) (Squeaked past Lakeland, 2-1)

SS George Lombard Jr.: 0-for-5, 3 K
This is the first time Lombard didn’t reach base in a professional game.
CF Jackson Castillo1-for-3, BB, K
Since promotion: 6-for-34 with a homer and five RBI.
3B Kiko Romero1-for-3, 2B (6), RS, HBP
.234/.368/.415 in 114 PA at this level. He has a 7-game hitting streak (8-for-22; 3 doubles, 2 HR)
C Omar Martinez1-for-4, RBI
.251/.368/.447 in 440 PA (16 doubles, 1 triple, 18 HR, 71 RBI, 66 R, 67 BB, 110 K, 8-for-9 SB)
1B Josh Moylan1-for-4, K
DH Garrett Martin1-for-4, K
LF Nelson Medina1-for-4, HR (6), RBI, RS, K
Medina has homered in back-to-back games.
RF Tayler Aguilar0-for-4, 4 K
2B Jose Colmenares1-for-3, BB

RHP Sean Hermann: (W, 7-6) 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, HR
They could bring him up for the High-A playoffs, but I think they will shut him down now. His season: 4.79 ERA in 112.2 IP (118 H, 69 R, 60 ER, 10 HR, 45 BB, 91 K). Hermann is known for inducing ground balls – if he can start missing more bats, there is big potential here. If not, nothing wrong with being a ground ball machine if that trend continues as he moves up.
RHP Luis Arejula2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Ocean Gabonia (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

FCL Yankees (35-22; 1-2 in the playoffs)

They lost to the Braves in the championship series. Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (33-19)

Their season is over, as they missed the playoffs by a half-game.

DSL Bombers (27-26)

Their season is over.

Yankees MILB 8/20: Austin Wells: 2 HR, 7 RBI

News:

I have nothing important to report.

Quick commentary: Anyone who follows the minors knows that Triple-A is an offensive haven. It used to be that the PCL was crazy while the International League played more fairly. Nowadays, both leagues are offense-first (the PCL (teams average 6.26 R/G) is still the king of offense, as the International League is at 5.57). This doesn’t mean you disqualify kids just because they hit well in an offensive league. Keep it in mind when you look at boxscores, but don’t dismiss what you are looking at based on that alone.

Scranton (57-60; 23-20 in the second half) (Destroyed Worcester, 13-1)

CF Estevan Florial: 2-for-5, 2 RS, BB, 2 K
.291/.385/.571 in 392 PA (16 doubles, 4 triples, 23 HR, 59 RBI, 65 R, 53 BB, 116 K (29.6%), 19-for-29 SB)
SS Oswald Peraza3-for-5, 3 RS, BB, K, SB (16)
Back-to-back 3-hit efforts (and three in the month of August) for Peraza, who is up to .268/.357/.479 in 299 PA.
LF Everson Pereira0-for-2, 3 RS, 2 BB, HBP, K, 2 SB (4)
Obviously, we love the power – but it is nice to see Pereira reach base in other ways today and use his wheels. Pereira is not likely a big stolen base guy in the majors, but he should reach double digits with a chance to reach the 20 mark. He is at .312/.386/.551 in 158 PA at this level.
DH Austin Wells: 2-for-4, 2 HR (4), 7 RBI, 3 RS, BB
Wells’ first career multi-HR game and he sets a new personal best for RBI in a game. Through Friday, he was hitting .244/.340/.372 at this level. Now, two days later, he is hitting .260/.351/.479 in 111 PA at this level. Overall, he has 16 homers and 70 runs batted in 88 games this season.
1B Andres Chaparro0-for-4, SF, RBI, K
Chaparro is up to 75 RBI, giving him the organization’s lead (Jared Serna has 74)
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-5, 2B (8), 2 RBI, K
3B Jamie Westbrook: 2-for-5, 2B (16), HR (18), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
RF Brandon Lockridge: 3-for-5, 2B (7), SB (17)
Lockridge is up to 34 stolen bases in 38 attempts between here and Somerset.
2B Wilmer Difo1-for-5, HR (5), RBI, RS, 2 K

RHP Will Warren: (W, 5-4) 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K
At this level: 4.85 ERA (65 IP, 63 H, 45 R, 35 ER, 12 HR, 35 BB, 67 K). Warren is up to 94.1 innings this season, so he has plenty of bullets to fire (129 IP in 2022)
RHP Zach Greene1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 0 K
LHP Anthony Misiewicz0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Nick Ramirez1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Somerset (67-46; 25-19 in the second half) (Defeated Reading, 6-1)

DH Jasson Dominguez: 4-for-5, 3 2B (19), RBI, RS
Dominguez, who compiles his first career 3-double game, has two 4-hit games in his last three games played. He is up to .254/.367/.414 (.781 OPS) in 507 PA (19 doubles, 2 triples, 15 HR, 66 RBI, 82 R, 77 BB (15.2%), 130 K (25.6%), 37-for-44 SB (84.1%)). It is fun to do “what has he done lately?” stats – but his full season is now speaking for itself.  By the way, one way to develop your game is by playing it. Dominguez has 1,037 plate appearances over the last two seasons. Does he deserve to play in Scranton for a few weeks? I think so – maybe they will get him there before the end of August.
C Agustin Ramirez: 1-for-4, 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
Last 7 games: 8-for-30 (.267). That may not impress you, but he started 3-for-22 at this level.
CF Elijah Dunham2-for-5, RBI, 2 K
3B Caleb Durbin: 2-for-3, BB, CS (4)
Durbin is hitting .277 with a .765 OPS in 133 PA at this level. He has back-to-back 2-hit games.
  1B Josh Breaux0-for-1, K
RF Aaron Palensky: 1-for-4, RBI, BB, 2 K, 2 SB (11)
Palensky is the first Yankees prospect to reach 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases this season. He is a double away from adding 20 doubles to that list (Jared Serna needs one home run to get himself in the 20/20/20 club)
LF Jeisson Rosario0-for-2, BB, K
SS Jesus Bastidas: 2-for-4, HR (3), RBI, RS
Bastidas, who hit 18 homers for Somerset in 2022, is up to 12 between Somerset/Scranton in 2023.
1B-3B Mickey Gasper0-for-3, RS, BB, K
2B Max Burt0-for-3, RS, BB, K

RHP Blane Abeyta: (W, 8-6)  5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, HR
5.43 ERA (106 IP, 105 H, 66 R, 64 ER, 14 HR, 43 BB, 108 K). The 24-year-old was one of the post-draft signings after the shortened 2020 COVID draft.
RHP Bailey Dees2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
Since promotion: 10.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 HR, 6 BB, 9 K. Overall, Dees has a 68/21 K/BB ratio in 52 innings.
RHP Danny Watson1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Since promotion: 1.48 ERA (30.1 IP, 14 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 HR, 15 BB, 35 K).

Hudson Valley (63-51; 24-24 in the second half) (Defeated Brooklyn, 7-1)

CF Spencer Jones: 3-for-4, HR (13), RBI, 2 RS, BB, SB (35)
Jones has four 3-hit games this month and 14 3+ hit games this season. Believe it or not, this was his first home run since July 19th. He is hitting .268/.339/.456 in 447 PA (28 doubles, 4 triples, 13 HR, 55 RBI, 61 R, 42 BB, 131 K (29.3%), 35-for-43 SB)
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, SF, RBI, RS, K
.213/.255/.359 in 388 PA (14 doubles, 6 triples, 9 HR, 50 RBI, 49 R, 21 BB, 100 K (25.8%), 13-for-19 SB). There is some improvement here over his time in Tampa in 2022 but he has yet to really put the entire package together.
1B Jesus Rodriguez: 2-for-4, 2B (2), RBI, RS, BB, K
Since promotion: .389 (14-for-36; 2 doubles, HR, 8 RBI, 6 R, 8 BB, 8 K). He continues to lead the organization in batting average (amongst qualifiers in the full-season leagues) at .307/.393/.437.
DH Christopher Familia1-for-4, 2 RBI, BB, K
The ultra-productive Familia has 56 RBI in 55 games between here and Tampa.
3B Ben Cowles1-for-4, RS, BB, K, 3 SB (20)
Cowles is now 17-for-49 in August (4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 11 R, 14 BB, 14 K, 7-for-9 SB)
C Rafael Flores1-for-5, K
RF Grant Richardson: 1-for-5, RBI, 3 K, 2 SB (14)
LF Jared Wegner1-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS, K
Wegner’s first HR since his promotion. He is the first 2023 draftee to make it this high up for the Yankees, and it makes sense as he is 24 years old.
2B Luis Santos0-for-3, RS, BB, K

RHP Brendan Beck4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, HR
While unimportant, Beck was an out away from his first professional win. He is simply on a strict pitch count, coming off of injury. At this level: 1.74 ERA (31 IP, 24 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 HR, 7 BB, 35 K). Will they allow the 24-year-old to get his feet wet in Double-A?
LHP Clay Aguilar: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
3.03 ERA (32.2 IP, 27 H, 13 R, 11 ER, 16 BB, 47 K)
RHP Luis Velasquez: (W, 3-1)  2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Since promotion: 2.05 ERA (30.2 IP, 18 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 18 BB, 34 K)
RHP Cole Ayers1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Since promotion: 10.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 3 BB, 9 K

Tampa (55-59; 24-24 in the second half) (Lost to Daytona, 3-0)

2B Roc Riggio: 1-for-3, BB, K, CS (1)
At this level: 7-for-33 with 15 walks and 14 strikeouts. Watch Riggio closely as he has “fast rise” potential in 2024.
3B Kiko Romero0-for-4, 3 K
11-for-56 (.196) with 13 walks and 24 strikeouts.
DH Omar Martinez0-for-4, 2 K
.261/.373/.472 in 383 PA (15 doubles, 1 triple, 17 HR, 64 RBI, 58 R, 56 BB (14.6%), 100 K (26.1%), 8-for-9 SB)
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-4, K
CF Cole Gabrielson0-for-4, K
RF Garrett Martin0-for-3, BB, 2 K
8-for-42 (.190) with seven walks and 16 strikeouts.
1B Beau Brewer1-for-2, BB
Brewer has a 5-game hitting streak and is 16-for-39 with 12 walks in August.
LF Daury Arias0-for-2, HBP, K
C Manuel Palencia0-for-2, BB

RHP Yorlin Calderon3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
3.29 ERA (68.1 IP, 63 H, 28 R, 25 ER, 5 HR, 23 BB, 86 K). He has likely done enough overall to earn a chance in Hudson Valley, but if the goal was to start stretching him out (this was his second straight start), doing so in Tampa is fine.
RHP Ocean Gabonia: 2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K
5.52 ERA (44 IP, 43 H, 33 R, 27 ER, 24 BB, 40 K). Gabonia is 22, but this is his first healthy season.
RHP Montana Semmel (L, 2-1): 1.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, HR

Scranton (54-57; 20-17 in the second half) (Defeated Syracuse, 6-2)

LF Everson Pereira0-for-5, 3 K
Since promotion: .311/.368/.533 in 136 PA.
C Austin Wells0-for-4, K
Since promotion: .257/.356/.365 in 87 PA with eight doubles, ten walks, and 20 strikeouts.
3B Oswald Peraza1-for-3, RS, BB, K
.261/.354/.470 in 271 PA (8 doubles, 1 triple, 13 HR, 33 RBI, 42 R, 28 BB, 48 K, 12-for-16 SB). His season doesn’t shout at you, but he is still doing more than enough to earn a consistent MLB shot.
RF Franchy Cordero1-for-3, 2B (11), RS, BB
1B Carlos Narvaez0-for-1, 2 RS, 2 BB
Since promotion: .262/.396/.426 in 227 PA (6 doubles, 8 HR, 24 RBI, 33 R, 38 BB (16.7%), 54 K (23.8%))
DH Jake Lamb1-for-3, HR (1), 3 RBI, RS
Lamb’s first HR as a member of the Yankees organization.
2B Jamie Westbrook1-for-3, HR (17), 3 RBI, RS, BB
Westbrook is two away from tying his career-best for homers in a season. His .524 SLG is the best number in his career. I hope this grinder at least earns a cup of MLB coffee. He has been doing the minor-league thing for years.
CF Brandon Lockridge1-for-4, 2 K, SB (15)
For Scranton: .286/.348/.365 in 138 PA. Overall: .297/.369/.428 in 252 PA (12 doubles, 4 triples, 3 HR, 24 RBI, 32 R, 25 BB, 61 K, 32-for-36 SB (88.9%))
SS Wilmer Difo0-for-3, BB

LHP Edgar Barclay4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, HR
Since promotion: 4.97 ERA (12.2 IP, 14 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 HR, 8 BB, 11 K). Overall: 2.31 ERA in 46.2 IP (40 H, 15 R, 12 ER, 4 HR, 19 BB, 62 K)
RHP Michael Gomez1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Zach Greene: (W, 2-0) 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

LHP Nick Ramirez1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (63-43; 21-17 in the second half) (Shut down Binghamton, 8-0 – remember, Somerset is already in the playoffs)

LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-5, K
After his insane hot streak, Dominguez is 0-for-12 with a pair of walks in his last three games. Correct – three games is about as small of a sample size as you can get. He is hitting .240/.743 OPS in 474 PA (14 doubles, 2 triples, 13 HR, 58 RBI, 74 R, 74 BB (15.6%), 122 K (25.7%), 36-for-43 SB)
DH Ben Rice2-for-3, BB, K
Since promotion: 27-for-79 (90 plate appearances; .342; 5 doubles, 1 triple, 7 HR, 25 RBI, 16 R, 9 BB (10%), 16 K (17.8%), 4-for-5 SB)
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-3, 2B (1), BB
Ramirez notches his first extra-base hit since his promotion. As he is moving up, the BB rate has gone down (18.5% for Tampa; 6.6% for Hudson Valley; one walk in 26 PA (3.8%) for Somerset). Is that worrisome? Not really – he was smoking the ball in Hudson Valley and the sample size is still quite small in Somerset.
1B Josh Breaux1-for-4, RS, K
2B Jesus Bastidas1-for-1, 2 RS, 3 BB, SB (1)
Bastidas draws three walks for the first time in his career.
CF Jeisson Rosario0-for-3, SF, RBI
RF Aaron Palensky: 2-for-3, 2B (9), HR (6), 3 RBI, 3 RS, BB, K
Palensky has 18 doubles and 18 HR between here and Hudson Valley.
SS Max Burt1-for-4, HR (10), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
The utility guy reaches double digits in homers for the second straight year.
3B Eduardo Torrealba1-for-4, 2 RBI, K

RHP Blane Abeyta:(W, 7-6)  6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
5.65 ERA (100.1 IP, 102 H, 65 R, 63 ER, 13 HR, 40 BB, 103 K). His K rate has jumped up from his time in Hudson Valley last year, though the same is true of the home run rate. It makes me wonder if they have changed anything with his pitch mix.
RHP Jesus Liranzo1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Danny Watson1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
Since promotion: 1.33 ERA (27 IP, 12 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 HR, 11 BB, 31 K). Overall, Watson is up to 70 strikeouts in 51.1 innings.
RHP Alex Mauricio1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.38 ERA (40 IP, 36 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 4 HR, 12 BB, 39 K)

Hudson Valley (59-49; 20-22 in the second half) (Lost two games to Jersey Shore – remember, Hudson Valley is already in the playoffs)

Game 1 (Lost, 12-10. Since this game was the conclusion of a suspended game, it went all nine innings)

CF Spencer Jones: 3-for-5, 2B (26), RBI, 2 RS, K, 2 SB (30)
Jones joins Jasson Dominguez and Brandon Lockridge in the organization’s 30+ SB club. He has 12 3+ hit games this season.
2B Jared Serna: 2-for-3, RBI, RS, 2 BB, SB (4)
Serna’s hitting streak (split between here and Tampa) reaches eight. He has 23 stolen bases in 29 tries between the two levels.
SS Ben Cowles1-for-4, 2 RS, BB, 2 K
LF Christopher Familia: 3-for-5, 2B (4), HR (8), 5 RBI, 2 RS
Familia has two 5-RBI games in 2023 and has 19 homers and 52 RBI in 50 games between here and Tampa. His up-to-the-minute triple slashes: Overall: .317/.390/.678. For Hudson Valley (128 PA): 259/.328/.500.
C Rafael Flores: 2-for-4, 2 2B (14), RBI, 2 RS, BB, K
A much-needed game for Flores, who entered action 3-for-32 in August.
3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-3, SF, 2 RBI, BB
7-for-13 with four RBI and five walks since his promotion.
RF Anthony Hall1-for-5, K
3-for-21 with a double since his promotion.

LHP Clay Aguilar: (L, 3-3)  2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Aguilar did allow three inherited runners to score.
RHP Cole Ayers1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K

Game 2 (Lost, 6-1. Since this was Game 2, it was a 7-inning game)

CF Spencer Jones1-for-4, K
.264/.333/.451 in 418 PA (26 doubles, 4 triples, 12 HR, 52 RBI, 55 R, 38 BB, 124 K, 30-for-38 SB)
SS Jared Serna1-for-3, BB
Serna extends his hitting streak to nine and is 8-for-24 since his promotion. So far, the pitching here isn’t overwhelming him.
LF Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, 2 K
2B Alexander Vargas2-for-3, 2 2B (14), RS, 2 SB (13)
Vargas is 6-for-9 in his last two games with three doubles, a home run, four runs batted in, and three stolen bases.
C Antonio Gomez0-for-2, K
3B Ben Cowles0-for-2, BB, K
1B Rafael Flores1-for-3, RBI, K
.273/.357/.363 in 353 PA (14 doubles, 1 triple, 4 HR, 31 RBI, 40 R, 40 BB, 90 K, 3-for-4 SB). A bit of a slump took him away from his chase for .300, but he is still having a solid year. I keep asking the same question about many: Is he a catcher? Plus, do the Yankees think there is power for him to tap into? He isn’t a small kid (6’4″, 220) so maybe they think he can grow into some additional pop.
RF Grant Richardson0-for-3, K
DH Jared Wegner0-for-2, BB

RHP Brendan Beck: (L, 0-1)  3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

SS Roc Riggio1-for-4, RS, BB, K
Since promotion: 3-for-13 with a double and four walks.
1B Kiko Romero1-for-5, 2 RS, K
Romero is 8-for-38 in nine games since his promotion.
DH Omar Martinez3-for-4, 2 2B (14), 3 RS, BB, K
.269/.382/.485 in 353 PA (14 doubles, 1 triple, 16 HR, 59 RBI, 55 R, 52 BB, 94 K, 8-for-9 SB). It is likely frustrating when your teammates get promoted and you are left behind. That is human nature, after all. All Martinez can do is continue to perform and learn.
LF Coby Morales3-for-5, 3 2B (6), 3 RBI, 2 RS
The 21-year-old left-handed bat has six doubles and a homer in nine games. That is a nice way to get your career started.
RF Garrett Martin1-for-4, BB, K
6-for-26 with three doubles, four walks, and eight strikeouts. He was sent right to this level after being signed as an undrafted free agent.
C Manuel Palencia: 3-for-5, 4 RBI, RS
At this level: 5-for-12. He sets a new personal best for RBI in a game (this was only his 96th career game)
CF Daury Arias0-for-3, RS, 2 BB, SB (10)
Arias stole home and the back end of a double steal. He is hitting .222/.321/.321 in 361 PA.

Yankees MILB 7/25: Ben Rice is Lovin’ Double-A

News:

The Yankees have released a pair of veteran relievers.

RHP Michael Feliz, signed on May 18th, was released from his contract. He reportedly will sign with a team in Japan. The veteran pitched to a decent 3.38 ERA in only 13.1 innings with a 15/5 K/BB.
LHP D.J. Snelten was also cut. Snelten, who hadn’t pitched since making 20 starts with the Chicago Dogs (Independent) in 2019, was an interesting story but he simply did not perform. He compiled a 7.50 ERA in 30 games with Scranton, with a 48/42 K/BB over 36 innings.

RHP Bailey Dees was promoted from Hudson Valley to Somerset today, reuniting with former bullpen mate Danny Watson to form a towering duo. Dees, who stands 6’8″, pitched to a 1.74 ERA and 59/15 K/BB ratio over 41.1 innings. He was the Yankees’ 18th-round pick in the 2021 draft out of Penn State.

Scranton (45-49; 11-8 in the second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 3-1)

CF Estevan Florial: 2-for-3, 2B (14), RS, BB, K
Florial now has a 5-game hitting streak (7-for-17). He has three doubles during the streak.
LF Everson Pereira1-for-4, K
Pereira is hitting .345 (20-for-58) since his promotion (at least one hit in 13 of 14 games)
SS Oswaldo Cabrera0-for-3, BB, K
C Austin Wells0-for-3, SF, RBI, K
Since promotion: 3-for-14 (1 double, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 7 K)
3B Andres Chaparro0-for-4
DH Carlos Narvaez2-for-4, 2B (5)
Since promotion: .285/.416/.486 in 178 PA.

2B Jamie Westbrook0-for-3

RHP Jhony Brito: (L, 2-2) 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
5.45 ERA (36.1 IP, 40 H, 23 R, 22 ER, 16 BB, 33 K). Do his Triple-A numbers matter? Not really.
RHP Michael Gomez1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Anthony Misiewicz1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K

Somerset (54-35; 12-9 in the second half) (Shut out Bowie, 6-0, in a 6-inning game (rain))

FYI: If you see any numbers below that don’t match up to other numbers you are seeing, it is due to July 9th. That game was suspended and MILB.com is treating it weirdly. The overall numbers include that game – the splits do not. So, when you see “numbers in July” below, keep in mind that one game is currently not included.

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, HR (13), RBI, RS, K
The home run was a lead-off blast. Sweeney is hitting .253/.369/.437 in 396 PA. In July, he is hitting .288/.413/.455 in 17 games (3 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 14 R, 12 BB, 15 K). He has shown more against RHP (.856 OPS) than LHP (.630) but there is no reason for concern. Just something to watch.
RF Willie Calhoun: 2-for-3, BB
CF Jasson Dominguez1-for-3, RS, BB, K, SB (26), CS (6)
.220/.349/.368 in 392 PA. In 18 July games, Dominguez is hitting .307/.381/.427.
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-3, RS, BB, K
.230/.321/.544 in 312 PA.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-0
He left the game early – never a good thing.
 1B Mickey Gasper: 1-for-2, 2 RS, BB
LF Elijah Dunham2-for-2, SF, RBI, SB (9), CS (2)
Dunham has a 5-game hitting streak (9-for-21) and has 21 stolen bases in 27 tries between here and Scranton.
DH Ben Rice2-for-2, HR (3), 4 RBI, RS, BB
Since promotion: 10-for-17 (.588) with three home runs in four games. Overall, Rice is hitting .365/.516/.646 in 128 spectacular plate appearances. I don’t know if catching is part of the long-term plan, but the Yankees seem to have an intriguing hitter here.
C Josh Breaux0-for-3, K
2B Max Burt0-for-1, 2 BB, K, CS (3)

RHP Blane Abeyta (W, 6-4): 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
It goes down as a shutout in the record books. Abeyta owns a 5.46 ERA in 85.2 IP with a 91/37 K/BB.

Hudson Valley (51-39; 12-12 in the second half) (Smoked Hickory, 16-5)

CF Spencer Jones3-for-6, RBI, RS, K
Jones now has a 6-game hitting streak (11-for-27 (.407); 2 doubles, 2 HR, 6 RBI). This is his 10th 3+ hit game this season (including one on 7/21). It’s been a season of streaks for Jones, but the overall resume is a good one.

3.25 ERA in 52.2 IP (44 H, 22 R, 19 ER, 4 HR, 14 BB, 66 K). Calderon comes at you with a sinker/change/slider mix, with a few curves mixed in.
RHP Matt Keating2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
3.95 ERA (41 IP, 41 H, 24 R, 18 ER, 3 HR, 22 BB, 60 K). Keating doesn’t throw extremely hard (91-93) but has a few weapons to go to (4-seam, cutter, slider, curve)

2.73 ERA (29.2 IP, 15 H, 11 R, 11 ER, 3 HR, 16 BB, 41 K). Like many big pitchers, you look for improvements in control. Not allowing a walk works.
RHP Jackson Fristoe (W, 1-2): 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 2 K
Fristoe’s first professional win – congrats!
RHP Yoljeldriz Diaz: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
When you have a 22-year-old who has pitched in only 20 games in four seasons, you know that injuries are the likely reason.
RHP Eric Reyzelman (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
His first professional save – congrats!

DSL Yankees (22-12) (Destroyed the Rangers Red, 12-2)

DH Jose Castro3-for-6, 2B (4), RBI, RS, SB (10)

3B Andry Javier1-for-5, 3B (1), 2 RBI, RS
RF Niurby Asigen: 4-for-5, RBI, 3 RS
His first career 4-hit game raises his triple slash from .169/.319/.271 to .219/.351/.313. The wonders of small sample sizes.

RHP Jerson Alejandro3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Yankees MILB 7/2: Jack Neely Ks 7 Straight

News:

Due to the fact that MILB had both Monday and Tuesday off this past week, teams will be playing tomorrow (Monday is typically an off day in every full-season league).

C Josh Breaux was sent down to Somerset due to an injury to Anthony Seigler, who has a career filled with annoying injuries. Even after this transaction, Scranton has three catchers (Ben Rortvedt, Carlos Narvaez, and Rodolfo Duran).

Scranton (37-41; 3-1 in the second half) – The game against Syracuse was postponed due to rain. The lineup was posted prior to the postponement and is below.

CF Estevan Florial0-for-0
Florial is hitting .292/.384/.605 (138 wRC+) in 297 PA with a 13.5% BB and 29.3% K.
SS Oswald Peraza0-for-0
Peraza is hitting .278/.347/.544 (116 wRC+) in 176 PA with a 6.3% BB and 16.5% K.
LF Elijah Dunham0-for-0
Dunham is hitting .220/.332/.345 (75 wRC+) in 298 PA with a 12.8% BB and 28.5% K.
1B Andres Chaparro0-for-0
Chaparro is hitting .235/.318/.459 (87 wRC+) in 321 PA with a 10.9% BB and 21.2% K.
C Carlos Narvaez0-for-0
After putting up a .801 OPS and 120 wRC+ for Somerset, he has compiled a .897 OPS and 130 wRC+ for Scranton.
RF Franchy Cordero0-for-0
DH Rodolfo Duran0-for-0
Duran is hitting .247/.312/.441 (84 wRC+) in 186 PA with a 7.5% BB and 22.6% K.
3B Jamie Westbrook0-for-0
2B Max Burt0-for-0

RHP Aaron McGarity0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
It looks like Scranton was going the “bullpen game” route…

Somerset (46-27; 4-1 in the second half) (Defeated Bowie, 6-4, in 11 innings)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-5, RS, K
LF Jasson Dominguez2-for-5, K
Back-to-back multi-hit games.
C Austin Wells0-for-5, RS, K
DH Everson Pereira: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, RS, BB, K
After games of 4/25, Pereira was hitting .220/.304/.380. Since then, in 32 games, he is 37-for-115 (.322; 7 doubles, 9 HR, 24 RBI, 165 wRC+ (the wRC+ number is prior to tonight)). The time away due to injury wasn’t ideal but he is certainly having a strong campaign.
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-5, K
CF Jeisson Rosario: 2-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, BB
RF Aaron Palensky: 2-for-5, HR (4), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
Palensky now has 16 HR between here and Hudson Valley.
2B Matt Pita2-for-5, RBI, 3 K
3B Delvin Perez1-for-5, CS (1)

RHP Blane Abeyta6 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 9 K, HR
6.00 ERA (69 IP, 68 H, 48 R, 46 ER, 9 HR, 34 BB, 75 K). The Yankees liked Abeyta enough to sign him after the shortened 2020 COVID draft.
LHP Ryan Anderson: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
Since promotion: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K
RHP Alex Mauricio:  2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR
3.75 ERA (24 IP, 19 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 3 HR, 9 BB, 24 K)
RHP Blas Castano: (W, 4-3)  2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (41-33; 2-3 in the second half) (Defeated Wilmington, 6-5, on a walk-off wild pitch)

DH Spencer Jones: 2-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, SB (19)
.263/.328/.474 in 299 PA with a 19-for-25 stolen base rate.
SS Ben Cowles0-for-3, 2 SF, 2 RBI, K
Productive Outs alert!
LF Christopher Familia0-for-5, K
1B Rafael Flores2-for-3, RS, BB
.298/.369/.367 in 244 PA (10 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 20 RBI, 23 R, 25 BB, 62 K). For a hitter of his ilk, you would like to see a K% below his current 25.4%.
C Antonio Gomez1-for-4, 2B (13), RBI, RS, K
Gomez is now the proud owner of a 7-game hitting streak (8-for-27)
CF Grant Richardson0-for-3, BB, 2 K
RF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-4, 2B (8), RS, K
2B Eduardo Torrealba1-for-3, RS, BB
3B Marcos Cabrera1-for-3, RS, BB, K

RHP Juan Carela4.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 9 K
3.09 ERA (67 IP, 47 H, 28 R, 23 ER, 2 HR, 26 BB, 87 K). He needed 100 pitches, so this was a grind. Like I said the other night, I like to see how prospects respond when they don’t have their A++ stuff – Carela did well to get these 14 outs with limited damage.
RHP Indigo Diaz2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, HR
Diaz stranded both of the runners inherited from Carera. They tried to stretch him into a third inning and he gave up some runs. That is what the minors are for.
RHP Jack Neely: (W, 4-2)  2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
Neely strikes out seven in a row on only 25 pitches, setting a new personal best for strikeouts in a game (struck out six in a game earlier this season). He now owns a 2.60 ERA in 34.2 IP (19 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 3 HR, 14 BB, 55 K). Neely stands 6’8″ and was drafted in the 11th round of the 2021 draft out of Ohio State.

Tampa (34-39; 1-3 in the second half) (Lost to Daytona, 6-1, in ten innings)

SS Jared Serna1-for-4, BB
Serna has hit safely in four straight games but is mostly in “maintenance” mode right now as his numbers are holding steady at .288/.350/.488 in 314 plate appearances (16 doubles, 1 triple, 13 HR, 46 RBI, 48 R, 26 BB (8.3%), 51 K (16.2%), 16-for-21 SB). Something to keep in mind: This is Serna’s first full season in a full-season league – it wouldn’t be shocking if a little fatigue starts to set in.
3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-4, 2B (10), BB
.290/.374/.420 in 231 plate appearances.
DH Ben Rice0-for-1, 3 BB
Rice has 21 walks in 17 games (he is only in Tampa for a rehab stint). His BB% is 28.4%.
   PH-DH Ronny Rojas0-for-1, RS, K
2B Brenny Escanio0-for-4, BB, K
Escanio has walked eight times in his last five games. He is not likely to ever have much power, so he will need to slap the ball around, take his walks, and play good defense if he wants to eventually advance to the highest level.
C Omar Martinez0-for-4, RBI, BB
.223/.355/.354 in 211 plate appearances (6 doubles, 1 triple, 5 HR, 24 RBI, 24 R, 33 BB, 64 K). Martinez is a 21-year-old left-handed bat.
CF Daury Arias1-for-5
OPS, by month, for the toolsy OF:  April (.504), May (.736), June (.760). We’ll see what July brings.
LF Jake Palmer: 1-for-3, 2B (3), BB
Palmer is 6-for-25 (.240) since his promotion with three doubles and a rather impressive 9/1 BB/K.
RF Tayler Aguilar: 1-for-2, BB, HBP
1B Beau Brewer1-for-4, 2B (1)

RHP Justin Lange:  5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 6 BB, 4 K
4.35 ERA (51.2 IP, 31 H, 29 R, 25 ER, 5 HR, 42 BB, 80 K). If the player development system “solves” Lange, they should all get significant promotions and raises.
RHP Yorlin Calderon1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
2.81 ERA (41.2 IP, 31 H, 15 R, 13 ER, 12 BB, 52 K). Calderon features a starting pitcher’s mix, throwing a sinker, slider, curve, and changeup. His main pitch (at least for today, but I assume it is usually the case) is the curveball. The other three pitches were mixed equally today.
RHP Ocean Gabonia: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Adam Stone (L, 1-2):  1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

FCL Yankees (11-9)

Yankees MILB 6/14: Trey Sweeney: 3 Hits, HR

News:

Nothing to report.

Scranton (29-34)

Their game against Rochester was postponed. They will play a pair tomorrow.

A few stat lines to hold you over:

Estevan Florial.307/.406/.625 (150 wRC+); 14.8% BB, 30.6% K (It temporarily slipped below 30% for a day. Florial has a shot at a 30/30 minor league campaign – but I bet he would much rather be playing in MLB games)
Oswald Peraza.306/.377/.581 (135 wRC+); 5.8% BB, 15.2% K (One has to love the ability to make contact)
Andres Chaparro.245/.318/.441 (83 wRC+); 9.7% BB, 21.3% K (Yes, his numbers have taken a fall as the power has disappeared, for now)
Jesus Bastidas.260/.325/.431 (85 wRC+); 7.4% BB, 26.1% K
Rodolfo Duran.270/.333/.504 (104 wRC+); 7.3% BB, 20% K (With Ben Rortvedt out, he is in the mix for the #3 catcher job)
Carlos Narvaez.279/.457/.410 (135 wRC+); 22.2% BB, 22.2% K (20 games. Narvaez is also in the mix for #3 catcher)
Elijah Dunham.222/.337/.329 (74 wRC+); 12.8% BB, 27.2% K (Tough season thus far for Dunham, who simply hasn’t been able to get into a groove)

Deivi Garcia5.23 ERA/6.12 FIP over 31 innings with a 21.6% K and 16.2% BB.

Somerset (36-22) (Squeaked past Altoona, 5-4)

SS Trey Sweeney: 3-for-4, 2B (13), HR (5), 2 RBI, RS, BB
Sweeney’s hitting streak is up to 11 (17-for-50 (.340)). This is his third 3-hit game this season and he has his triple slash up to .250/.371/.385. Before the streak, his triple slash was .222/.362/.329.
CF Harrison Bader0-for-4, 2 K
  RF Aaron Palensky0-for-1, K
LF Jasson Dominguez1-for-5, 2 K
C Austin Wells3-for-4, HR (9), RBI, 2 RS, K
Enough is enough – he has no business being here. That said, despite the fact that they are treating Oswald Peraza as if he is a Quadruple-A veteran who should languish in Triple-A, top prospects don’t typically need a lot of time in Triple-A. If the plan is to get him to Triple-A for a week or so before promoting him to MLB, fine. I don’t think that will happen, but it would at least explain this insanity.
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-4, HR (12), 2 RBI, RS, K
Rumfield has homered in five straight games (6 HR in last 7 games). He is now hitting .242/.332/.503 in 184 PA (5 doubles, 12 HR, 34 RBI, 28 R, 21 BB, 26 K). You have to like that his power is surging while he is maintaining a low K% (14.1)
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 K, SB (7)
DH Anthony Seigler: 1-for-3, RS, BB, K, CS (4)
RF-CF Jeisson Rosario0-for-3, BB, 2 K
2B Max Burt1-for-4

RHP Blane Abeyta: (W, 5-3)   6.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
6.04 ERA (56.2 IP, 58 H, 39 R, 38 ER, 8 HR, 27 BB, 57 K). He left the game with two runners on base – and both scored.
RHP Blas Castano1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Danny Watson (S, 2): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Watson hasn’t allowed a run in six innings since his promotion (2 H, 2 BB, 3 K). He stands 6’7″ and has produced a lot of strikeouts on his journey through the minors – Double-A is an adjustment. For now, we will take the zeroes.

Hudson Valley (34-25) (Defeated Rome, 4-2)

CF Spencer Jones: 2-for-3, 2B (19), RS, BB, SB (15)
Jones with his second consecutive multi-hit game as he tries to break out of his extended slump.
2B Ben Cowles0-for-3, BB
C Rafael Flores1-for-4, RS, K
RF Anthony Garcia0-for-4, 2 K
DH Antonio Gomez1-for-3, RBI, HBP
Gomez is now 12-for-29 in June.
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, 2B (8), RBI, RS, K
1B Spencer Henson1-for-3, HR (9), 2 RBI, RS, HBP, 2 K
Henson is hitting .283 with 10 doubles, 9 HR, and 29 RBI.  His personal best for HR is 10, which he did in 71 games last year (tonight was his 43rd game this year)
LF Aldenis Sanchez0-for-3, BB
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-2

RHP Tyrone Yulie: (W, 2-4)  5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K
4.69 ERA (48 IP, 40 H, 33 R, 25 ER, 30 BB, 57 K)
LHP Ryan Anderson1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Jack Neely: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
1.80 ERA (25 IP, 13 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 13 BB, 36 K)
RHP Bailey Dees (S, 3): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.59 ERA (24.1 IP, 14 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 35 K)

Tampa (26-32) (Defeated Clearwater, 11-6. The Thrashers are really good (41-17) so this is a quality win)

SS Jared Serna2-for-5, HR (12), RBI, 2 RS, BB, SB (14)
Serna now owns a 7-game hitting streak. He is hitting .320/.383/.543 in 243 PA (11 doubles, 1 triple, 12 HR, 37 RBI, 40 R, 21 BB, 40 K, 14-for-18 SB). After games of 6/7, his SLG dropped below .500 (.495). Since that game, he is 11-for-29 with two doubles and four home runs. He has a realistic chance at a 25/25 type of season.
CF Daury Arias0-for-5, RS, BB, 3 K
C Agustin Ramirez2-for-3, HR (6), 2 RBI, 3 RS, 2 BB, K, CS (3)
.258/.402/.411 in 194 PA (5 doubles, 6 HR, 27 RBI, 32 R, 38 BB, 33 K, 6-for-9 SB). When you can maintain a BB/K over 1.00, you are doing something notable in the modern game. Ramirez is a catching prospect you need to pay attention to.
DH Anthony Hall2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 RS, 3 K
.277/.391/.418 in 169 PA. If not for his injury in his first AB last season, he likely is already up in Hudson Valley.
2B Brenny Escanio2-for-5, 2B (5), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K, SB (13)
Escanio has struggled this season but does have four multi-hit games in his last eight games played.
3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-3, 2B (7), RBI, RS, 2 BB, K
.294/.370/.405 in 174 PA (7 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR, 18 RBI, 27 R, 18 BB, 26 K (14.9%)). Rodriguez is 19-for-44 (.432) in June.
LF Christopher Familia1-for-3, 2B (5), 3 RBI, BB
Familia has 18 RBI in 12 games. That is a testament to how well the offense is flowing right now, but also a testament to how well he is hitting (.396/.482/.875; 9-game hitting streak). Correct – that .875 is his SLG, not his OPS.
1B Omar Martinez0-for-4, BB, 2 K
.237/.369/.396 in 168 PA (5 doubles, 1 triple, 5 HR, 20 RBI, 18 R, 27 BB, 51 K, 3-for-4 SB). Just like Ramirez and Rodriguez, Martinez is a catcher by trade.
RF Tayler Aguilar0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K, SB (4)

RHP Leonardo Pestana2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K
4.78 ERA (26.1 IP, 27 H, 14 R, 14 ER, 4 HR, 14 BB, 36 K). Health has been an issue for him – hopefully he can get through the rest of 2023 unscathed.
RHP Kris Bow (W, 2-1): 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
