Yankees MILB 4/18: George Lombard Jr. Reaches Base 6 Times

News:

The Yankees claimed OF Taylor Trammell off waivers from the Dodgers. In a corresponding move, IF Kevin Smith was designated for assignment. Trammell is out of options so he must be placed on the MLB roster.

Once one of baseball’s brightest prospects, Trammell has struggled in MLB, hitting .165/.266/.361 in 357 plate appearances with 15 homers and 39 RBI. His walk rate is solid (10.9%) but his career strikeout rate is 37.3%.

It’s a low-risk move and it is easy to cut bait if it doesn’t work out.

As for Smith, the Yankees lose shortstop depth by waiving him. Anthony Volpe‘s only backup is Oswaldo Cabrera, who is playing third base. One has to assume that DJ LeMahieu is close to returning.

I commented last night that he hadn’t played a game at first base this season. Well, now he has. Anyway, Rice is starting to heat up. He has homered in back-to-back games and is up to .250 with a .766 OPS.

His first start was rough (3.1 IP, 8 ER), but he followed that up with a 4.1 IP/1 R start and tonight’s performance. It’s encouraging for the 6’8″ 25-year-old.

Pereira is hitting .341/.371/.582 since his promotion. He has compiled three straight 2-hit games (five multi-hit games in his last six games played). When does he get to the Bronx? It may just be by the end of August. The strikeouts are still too high, but I don’t think getting his feet wet for a month or so is going to kill him.
C Austin Wells: 1-for-4, 2B (3), RS
Wells has hit safely in six of his last seven games. He is taking his walks (.367 OBP) but the power has yet to show up in Scranton.

Chaparro joins Tyler Hardman and Estevan Florial in the organization’s 20 HR club and ties his personal best for HR in a season. He is hitting .253/.345/.481 in 417 PA.

If you are going to have one hit, may as well make it a 3-run bomb. Ramirez is hitting .379 with a 1.138 OPS in 112 PA since his promotion (10 doubles, 8 HR, 21 RBI, 20 R). Overall, in 344 PA, he has 17 doubles, 15 HR, 56 RBI, and 55 runs scored. An outstanding season for the 21-year-old catcher.
DH Christopher Familia: 1-for-4, HR (6), RBI, RS
Familia have five home runs in his last eight games. Between here and Tampa, he is hitting an incredible .322/.392/.695 with 17 home runs and 46 RBI in 194 PA. He is 23 years old and should be in Somerset for 2024.

They stretched him into the 8th inning, where a hit he allowed eventually came around to score. Whatever – another brilliant effort from Selvidge. He has two straight 7+ inning efforts (14.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 12 K). Overall, including his time with Tampa, he is 6-4 with a 3.09 ERA in 96 IP (85 H, 38 R, 33 ER, 4 HR, 25 BB, 106 K). Selvidge has been mostly brilliant from the start and is one of very few left-handed starters in the system.

While he did allow one of Selvidge’s runners to score, it was on a ground ball with the runner on third base.
