Yankees MILB 6/20: Spencer Jones: 2 Hits, RBI, SB, BB

News:

OF Jasson Dominguez will miss at least eight weeks due to an oblique injury. That pushes his return to mid-August, where he will undoubtedly be rusty. He can still be one of the September call-ups, but we must be realistic about 2024 expectations. He hasn’t played much and the Yankees will likely be cautious. As I said last night, it isn’t quite a lost season but it isn’t a productive one for his development either.

Scranton (41-29) (Lost to Buffalo, 9-4)

CF Brandon Lockridge: 2-for-4, SB (22), RS, BB, K
With Dominguez and Everson Pereira out, the #5 outfield slot is there for the taking. Known for his speed and defense, he is hitting .274/.404/.363 in 151 PA with 22 stolen bases in 24 attempts.
2B Jorbit Vivas0-for-1, RS, 4 BB
With Scranton, Vivas has 19 walks in 21 games (98 PA; 19.4%)
SS Oswald Peraza2-for-4, RBI, HBP
Many hitters never figure out how to hit in MLB. We don’t know if that will be true for Peraza. However, I am shocked at how badly he is slumping in Scranton. Unless something is bothering him, he should be crushing this level. He is at .176/.317/.216.
C Agustin Ramirez0-for-4, HBP, K
Ramirez is off to a 1-for-9 start in Scranton. It was fun while it lasted…
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-4
DH Carlos Narvaez1-for-4, 2B (14), K
Narvaez continues to show off his pop (14 doubles, 7 HR in 57 games; .431 SLG).
RF Jose Rojas1-for-4, HR (14), RBI, RS, K
Rojas has 14 homers in 52 games. Impressive, but the 31-year-old owns a .188/.245/.339 triple slash in 83 MLB games (2021-2022). He spent 2023 in Korea (.253/.345/.474 with 19 homers)
3B Jeter Downs1-for-4, 2 K
Downs has a 5-game hitting streak and is 14-for-35 (.400) in June with a 7-for-8 SB rate.
LF Taylor Trammell1-for-3, HR (3), RBI, RS, BB, K
Trammell has homered in two of his last three games.

LHP Tanner Tully: (L, 1-5) 4 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 4 HR
RHP Jake Cousins1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Cody Morris0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K
LHP Oddanier Mosqueda1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Josh VanMeter1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Kevin Smith1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
VanMeter and Smith are veteran utility players who received an inning on the hill tonight.

Somerset (32-34) (Lost to Erie, 9-7. Everyone in the lineup collected at least one hit)

CF Spencer Jones: 2-for-5, RBI, SB (17), BB, 3 K
June: 20-for-70 (.286; 3 doubles, 1 triple, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 13 R, 5-for-6 SB). He entered June with a .641 OPS. It is now .704.
C Jesus Rodriguez2-for-6, RBI
Rodriguez earns his first Double-A hit. Congrats! Fans of the Patriots are getting a dose of his versatility: Third base in his Double-A debut, and catcher tonight. As for the multi-hit game, he has 22 in 58 games this season. Machine.
1B Tyler Hardman1-for-4, BB
3B Ben Cowles1-for-5, RS, SB (12), 2 K
LF Grant Richardson1-for-5, RS, SB (8), 3 K
DH Elijah Dunham: 2-for-3, 2B (8), 2 RS, 2 BB, K
2B Anthony Seigler: 2-for-4, 2B (10), HR (7), 3 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Seigler is showing some pop and speed this year (10 doubles, 7 HR, 11-for-12 SB) but that doesn’t mean his prospect status is coming back (.198 with a .670 OPS). Anyway, the 7 HR ties his personal best, set in 2022.
RF Aaron Palensky: 1-for-4, RBI, BB, 2 K
SS Alexander Vargas2-for-5, 3B (2), RBI, RS, 2 K
Vargas is hitting .211 since his promotion. By most accounts, the glove is still MLB-quality – the bat just hasn’t developed. That sounds somewhat like Kyle Holder, but Vargas likely has more offense to tap into. That said, he has to prove it. In case you are wondering about Holder, he hasn’t played since 2022.

RHP Blane Abeyta: (L, 3-6)  5 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 3 HR
RHP Danny Watson0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but Watson is likely still in “get back into a groove” mode after a long-term injury.
RHP Yorlin Calderon2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
For Somerset: 2.57 ERA (21 IP, 16 H, 11 R, 6 ER, 1 HR, 9 BB, 20 K)
RHP Kevin Stevens1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Hudson Valley (33-32) (Lost to Greensboro, 4-2)

LF Jace Avina0-for-4, K
SS Jared Serna0-for-4
Since being hit by a pitch and missing a game, Serna is 0-for-11. It could be a coincidence. I hope that it is.
C Rafael Flores0-for-4, 2 K
DH Garrett Martin1-for-3, HR (3), RBI, RS, 2 K
.212/.305/.372. He has hit safely in six of his last seven games.
RF Cole Gabrielson0-for-3, 2 K
1B Josh Moylan1-for-3, 2B (5), RS
.222/.357/.284 in 199 PA (5 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 15 RBI, 23 R, 15.6% BB, 23.1% K).  So far, the power hasn’t shown up (.313 SLG in 24 games in Tampa last year).
2B Brenny Escanio0-for-3, K
3B Beau Brewer1-for-3, RBI
CF Nelson Medina0-for-3, K

RHP Sebastian Keane: (L, 5-5) 5.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 2 HR
Keane allowed three runs in the first inning but worked it out. Season: 5.02 ERA (57.1 IP, 55 H, 33 R, 32 ER, 6 HR, 29 BB, 55 K)
RHP Mason Vinyard0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
2.29 ERA (19.2 IP, 13 H, 10 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 10 BB, 31 K)
RHP Luis Arejula2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.46 ERA (26 IP, 23 H, 14 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 15 BB, 27 K)

Tampa (24-42) (Lost to Palm Beach, 5-2)

3B Enmanuel Tejeda0-for-4, RS, CS (4)
SS George Lombard Jr.: 2-for-4, 2B (10), RS, K
.228/.360/.321 in 225 PA (10 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 23 RBI, 23 R, 17-for-18 SB). He is on a 6-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 9 of his last 10 games. Before this 10-game stretch, his triple slash was .207/.359/.269. His OBP has barely moved, but his SLG is up 52 points.
2B Roderick Arias1-for-4, 2 RBI, SB (17), CS (8), K
.209/.301/.364 in 289 PA (9 doubles, 6 triples, 6 HR, 38 RBI, 35 R, 17-for-25 SB). He has eight extra-base hits and 19 RBI in June, which is good. However, the strikeouts remain prominent.
1B Dylan Jasso0-for-3, HBP, K
DH Antonio Gomez0-for-4
CF Jackson Castillo0-for-4
RF Willy Montero1-for-2, BB
.241/.298/.366 in 245 PA (13 doubles, 5 HR, 29 RBI, 28 R, 8-for-9 SB). Entering June, his triple slash was .207/.288/.283.
C Tomas Frick1-for-2, 2B (9), BB
.270/.391/.400 in 138 PA. Frick is doing a nice job in his debut season.
LF Daury Arias1-for-3, K

RHP Bryce Warrecker: (L, 0-1) 4.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
Warrecker’s Tampa debut (he appeared in a game earlier this season for Hudson Valley). He pitched well through 4 innings but ran into trouble in the 5th. The 22-year-old out of Cal Poly (drafted in the 20th round in 2023) is an interesting prospect. The Yankees are good at converting these pitchers into something valuable.
RHP Aaron Nixon2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
3.96 ERA (38.2 IP, 26 H, 21 R, 17 ER, 1 HR, 29 BB, 39 K). He hit 95 MPH with his 4-seamer, which they should be able to work with. You don’t need me to tell you that control is an issue.
RHP Jordy Luciano2 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Standing 5’10”, the 22-year-old Luciano packs a punch, maxing out at 96 MPH with his heater. His issue? Control. He has walked 30 batters in 33.1 innings this year and 76 in 82.1 innings in his career.

FCL (21-13) (Squeaked past the Phillies, 3-2)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-4, 2 K
Mayea is hitting .270/.356/.303 in 101 PA, which isn’t so bad. The K% is 27.7%, borderline but not in the “red alert” zone. Another metric I like to look at is Swinging Strike %. Entering today’s action, Mayea’s was at 22.9%, which will raise an eyebrow or two. Anyway, let’s see what happens as he gets more reps.
DH Edgleen Perez1-for-3, BB, 2 K
3B Abrahan Ramirez2-for-2, 3B (2), RS, BB
Is Ramirez going to become the latest obsession? He is hitting .396/.518/.582 in 115 PA and has seven multi-hit efforts in his last eight games. That’s not easily done at any level of baseball, folks.
LF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, 2B (12), RBI, RS
Sanchez has 17 extra-base hits (12 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HR) in 27 games. Additionally, he has 20 RBI, 23 runs, and 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts.
SS Juan Matheus2-for-3, 2 RBI

RHP Hansel Rosario3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
LHP Michael Peres (W, 1-0): 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K
RHP Jesus Castellanos (S, 2): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

DSL Yankees (4-9) (Lost to the Rangers Blue, 7-1)

SS Dexters Peralta0-for-3, RS, SB (7), BB, K
CF Gabriel Lara1-for-3, CS (1), BB
When you have a speedster like Lara, you want him running all the time in minor league games as he attempts to turn raw speed into base-stealing ability.

RHP Varis Villarreal2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

DSL Bombers (7-5) (Defeated the FCL Tigers 1, 4-3)

C Queni Pineda0-for-3, RS, BB, K
The 17-year-old is 8-for-27 (9 walks, 5 strikeouts)
RF Browm Martinez1-for-3, K
CF David Carrera1-for-3, RBI, K
SS Kevin Verde1-for-3, 2B (4), RS
1B Jesus Marquez2-for-3, 2 RBI
The 17-year-old is listed as a catcher but has only played 1B/DH thus far (only five games).

RHP Alexis Paulino3.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K
Well, that is what you call dominance. He is 21 and in his third season down here.
RHP Ismael Delgadillo (S, 1): 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
The 19-year-old earns a save in his first professional appearance.

Yankees MILB 5/31: Spencer Jones Breaks Out

News:

The Mets, in their neverending quest to buy a championship, acquired C Luis Torrens from the Yankees for $100,000. This move hurts the Yankees’ catching depth, but Torrens was #4 on the depth chart behind Jose Trevino, Austin Wells, and Carlos Narvaez. They aren’t hurting in this department. The Yankees weren’t stopping a veteran toiling in the minors from an MLB opportunity. As for the minor league depth, Scranton has Narvaez and Josh Breaux. The Yankees could assign Ben Rice or Agustin Ramirez to the level and maneuver others around to fill in rosters.

As a correction to my report yesterday: RHP Cody Poteet is not starting for Scranton on Saturday. He’s heading to San Francisco to pitch for the Yankees instead. His injury was a blister, often problematic for pitchers but better than most potential ailments.

Scranton (34-21) (Lost to Toledo, 1-0)

CF Brandon Lockridge1-for-3, BB
3B Oswald Peraza1-for-4, SB (4), K
For Scranton: 7-for-41 with 9 walks and 12 strikeouts.
1B Jose Rojas0-for-3, SB (2), HBP, K
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-3, 2B (11), BB, K
With Torrens gone, Narvaez is the no-doubt #3 catcher.
DH Oscar Gonzalez1-for-4, K
LF Taylor Trammell: 0-for-4, K
SS Jeter Downs1-for-4, 2B (8), 2 K
.242/.350/.470 in 161 PA.
2B Kevin Smith0-for-3
RF Greg Allen0-for-3, 2 K

LHP Josh Maciejewski4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
Maciejewski was promoted to Scranton today.
RHP Art Warren2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Duane Underwood Jr.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Clayton Andrews (L, 0-3): 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Somerset (24-25) (Crushed Bowie, 13-5)

CF-RF Spencer Jones: 3-for-4, HR (3), RBI, 4 RS, SB (12), BB, K
Jones’ first HR since April 23 as he extends his on-base streak to 14 (his triple slash has gone down during this stretch!) But maybe, just maybe, tonight is the start of something bigger as we head into June. He is hitting .220/.314/.327 with 12 stolen bases in 15 attempts.
DH-CF Jasson Dominguez3-for-5, HR (3), 3 RBI, 2 RS, SB (1)
For Somerset: 11-for-33 (.333) with 3 HR, 7 RBI, and 6 runs scored.  He is on a 6-game hitting streak (11-for-25).
1B Ben Rice: 3-for-4, 2B (6), RBI, RS, BB, K
.249/.373/.497 in 205 PA. In his last 10 games, he is 11-for-36 with 2 doubles, 4 home runs, and 9 RBI.
C Agustin Ramirez2-for-4, 2B (9), RBI, 2 RS, BB
Ramirez’s 11th multi-hit game. This season, he is hitting .271/.376/.554 in 197 PA. 9 of his 12 home runs came in April, but 8 of his 9 doubles came in May. His BABIP, so low to start the season, now sits at .273.
SS Ben Cowles2-for-5, 2B (17), 3B (3), 2 RBI, RS, K
.319/.402/.534 in 194 PA. With all the big shots here, who would have thought that Cowles would be outshining them in OPS?  He is one double away from his season best (he hit 18 in 2022 and 2023).
RF-LF Grant Richardson0-for-4, SF, RBI, 3 K
3B Jordan Groshans1-for-4, CS (1), BB
LF Aaron Palensky0-for-4, 3 K
  P Jesus Liranzo0-for-0
2B Anthony Seigler3-for-4, 2 HR (3), 2 RBI, 3 RS, SB (7)
Seigler has 3 HR in his last 2 games. This is his first multi-HR game since July 27th, 2021.

RHP Trystan Vrieling: (W, 3-4) 5.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, HR
He left with two runners on and two outs, and both scored. Such is life. Season: 4.79 ERA (56.1 IP, 52 H, 32 R, 30 ER, 3 HR, 17 BB, 56 K).
RHP Jesus Liranzo (S, 1): 3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K

Hudson Valley (24-22) (Mauled Aberdeen, 10-3)

2B Roc Riggio1-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
.211/.364/.358 in 154 PA. April and May were similar: .213/.356/.383 in April; .211/.368/.342 in May.
SS Jared Serna3-for-4, HR (10), SF, 3 RBI, RS, BB, K
.253/.371/.489 in 213 PA (11 doubles, 10 HR, 40 RBI, 34 R). After hitting .211/.344/.352 with 2 HR and 11 RBI in April, he hit .282/.390/.583 with 8 HR and 29 RBI in May. It isn’t easy to drive home 29 runs in one month (he played in 25 May games)
CF Jace Avina1-for-3, SF, RBI, RS, 2 BB
.310/.395/.521 in 167 PA. It wasn’t quite Serna, but Avina drove home 21 runs in May.
LF Jesus Rodriguez1-for-2
After an awkward play in the field, Rodriguez left the game.

PH-RF Cole Gabrielson1-for-4, 2B (8), 2 RS
DH Omar Martinez2-for-3, HR (6), 2 RBI, RS, 2 BB
.244/.391/.437 in 169 PA. He hit .242/.367/.424 in April and .246/.411/.449 in May.
C Rafael Flores2-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, K
Flores thrived in May (.361/.474/.508; 9 doubles; current 6-game hitting streak). He hit .211/.308/.404 in April.
3B Josh Moylan1-for-3, RS, BB, HBP, 2 K
1B Kiko Romero0-for-5, 3 K
RF Kyle Battle1-for-3, RS, 2 BB, 2 K

LHP Kyle Carr5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
Like with Vrieling, Carr left with two runners on, and both scored.
RHP Luis Arejula (W, 3-3): 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K
LHP Joel Valdez1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

Tampa (18-31) (Lost to Palm Beach, 4-3. They loaded the bases in the top of the 9th, but couldn’t score. Oh well)

SS George Lombard Jr.: 1-for-4, 2B (5), RS, BB
.220/.374/.280 in 147 PA.  A .237/.438/.271 April was followed up with a .203/.299/.288 May. There was an injury mixed in between the two months.
2B Roderick Arias1-for-4, RBI
.201/.316/.318 in 212 PA (.214/.327/.381 in April; .189/.307/.263 in May). I keep saying it because it is true: We must be patient. And that patience comes without knowing whether or not he will develop. That’s life when you track prospects.
1B Dylan Jasso1-for-4, BB, K
.263/.358/.446 in 204 PA. Jasso drove in 20 runs in May (8 in April).
CF Jackson Castillo: 2-for-5, 2B (9), RBI, RS
April: .200/.273/.333. May: .267/.420/.480 with 7 of his 9 doubles. Lombard Jr. and Arias are teenagers. Castillo isn’t old, but he is 21. That can make all the difference.
RF Willy Montero1-for-4, 2B (7), RBI, BB, K
.187/.255/.247 in 184 PA. He was better in May, but still needs to find his groove.
DH Coby Morales0-for-5, 3 K
C Tomas Frick1-for-4, K
3B Brenny Escanio1-for-4, K
LF Daury Arias1-for-2, RS, 2 BB

RHP Ryan Harvey: (L, 2-3) 2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
RHP Kris Bow2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Bow wasn’t throwing a high-90s sinker tonight (peaked at 95.2). That said, he did not issue any walks, either. Season: 3.00 ERA (21 IP, 16 H, 11 R, 7 ER, 1 HR, 14 BB, 25 K).
RHP Osiel Rodriguez1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
1.50 ERA (24 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 HR, 13 BB, 26 K). Even in these short outings, he will use his 5-pitch mix. I don’t know if the Yankees still think he can start (he’s never started a professional game…), but they haven’t asked him to focus on 2-3 pitches.
RHP Steven Fulgencio2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

FCL (12-8) (Lost to the Tigers, 4-1. Do they get tired of playing the Blue Jays, Phillies, and Tigers all the time?)

CF Brando Mayea1-for-3, SB (5), BB, 2 K
.333/.436/.394 in 39 PA (5-for-5 SB). Mayea has an 8-game hitting streak.
DH Christopher Familia2-for-4
C Edgleen Perez1-for-3, K
LF Brian Sanchez1-for-3, HR (2), RBI, RS, K
19-for-55 (.345/.446/.636; 6 doubles, 2 triples, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 13 R, 6-for-7 SB)

RHP Chris Kean (L, 0-1): 1.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
6.1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 10 K. He should get to Tampa soon enough.

DSL (0-0)

It will be a while before their season starts!

Yankees MILB 9/16: Grant Richardson Homers

News:

I have nothing interesting to report.

Scranton (69-72; 35-32 in the second half) (Lost to Buffalo, 3-2, in ten innings)

SS Wilmer Difo1-for-4, 2B (9), RS, BB, K
DH Carlos Narvaez0-for-4, BB, 2 K
Between here and Somerset: .244/.368/.399 in 383 PA (16 doubles, 11 HR, 39 RBI, 45 R, 57 BB (14.9%), 103 K (26.9%), 6-for-9 SB)
RF Franchy Cordero0-for-3, BB
1B Andres Chaparro1-for-4, RBI
.249/.337/.445 in 570 PA (21 doubles, 2 triples, 24 HR, 84 RBI, 77 R, 64 BB, 119 K, 4-for-4 SB)
2B Jamie Westbrook0-for-4, K
3B Jake Lamb: 0-for-2, 2 BB, K
C Josh Breaux1-for-3, HR (2), RBI, RS, HBP
Breaux has ten home runs overall this season. He has reached double digits in HR in four straight seasons. Nobody ever denied his power potential.
LF Aaron Palensky: 1-for-2, BB, HBP, K, SB (1), CS (1)
Palensky earns his first Triple-A hit and stolen base. Overall, he has 22 stolen bases in 24 attempts.
CF Nelson Medina0-for-4, 3 K
Medina is 0-for-15 since his promotion – even in a league filled with offense, it should come as no surprise that a kid who spent the year either injured or in Low-A would struggle after being placed in Triple-A.

LHP Edgar Barclay5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 2 HR
At this level: 6.23 ERA (39 IP, 39 H, 30 R, 27 ER, 11 HR, 29 BB, 41 K).
Other than two curveballs, Barclay was a two-pitch pitcher today. He threw 54% changeups and 43% 4-seamers. He averaged 89.6 with that pitch, topping out at 92.5. It is not about velocity with Barclay – and the fact remains that talent evaluation is tough at Triple-A. Has MLB considered fixing this issue? While some of the ballparks in Triple-A are going to produce more offense because of where they are located, there is no reason for the entire league to be souped up.
LHP Josh Maciejewski1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Matt Krook1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K
0.84 ERA (32 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 23 BB, 53 K). His BABIP is .167 – frankly, I thought it may even be lower than that.
RHP Ron Marinaccio1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Jesus Liranzo (L, 0-2): 1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K

Somerset (83-53; 41-27 in the second half) (Defeated New Hampshire, 8-3)

SS Trey Sweeney: 2-for-3, RS, 2 BB, 2 SB (20)
Sweeney is 51-for-61 stealing bases over the past two seasons (210 games) and is hitting .250 with a .774 OPS this season. Entering tonight, he owned a rather impressive 8.7% Swinging Strike. That is 4th best among Eastern League qualifiers.
C Ben Rice1-for-4, 2B (13), 2 RS, BB
Rice has 29 extra-base hits (13 doubles, 1 triple, 15 HR) in 47 games for Somerset.
CF Spencer Jones: 2-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, 2 K, SB (8; 43rd overall), CS (3)
Jones swatted 28 doubles in 100 games for Hudson Valley. This is his first double since his promotion (16 games).
1B T.J. Rumfield: 1-for-4, SF, 2 RBI
It has been a tough go for Rumfield after his rehab stint, as he is 6-for-34 with zero home runs and five runs batted in. Before his injury, he swatted 17 homers in 71 games.
DH Caleb Durbin1-for-5, RBI
RF Elijah Dunham1-for-4, HR (10), RBI, RS, BB
Dunham has 16 HR and 34 stolen bases between Somerset and Scranton. He is Rule 5 eligible and could be selected – he offers value as a #4-#5 outfielder potentially.
2B Anthony Seigler: 2-for-4, HR (5), RBI, 2 RS
Unless something crazy happens tomorrow, Seigler will walk more than he strikes out for the second year in a row. Last year, the ratio was 91/82. This year, the ratio is 53/48.
LF Grant Richardson1-for-4, HR (5), 2 RBI, RS, K
Richardson has five home runs in 15 games since his promotion (13 HR in 77 games for Hudson Valley). The left-handed hitting prospect has shown some pop and the Yankees have another year of evaluation as he isn’t Rule 5 eligible until after 2024.
3B Eduardo Torrealba1-for-4, RS

RHP Yoendrys Gomez4.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 7 K
Gomez finishes the regular season with a 3.58 ERA in 65.1 IP (47 H, 27 R, 25 ER, 6 HR, 37 BB, 78 K). Gomez has been on the 40-man roster for a while now but might be out of minor league options next spring (sometimes, a player “earns” an extra option so we’ll see if that applies to Gomez). If the clock has run out, the Yankees have a talented arm with an injury history to make a decision on. Unlike Estevan Florial last spring, Gomez will not pass through waivers if the Yankees attempted to do that.
RHP Carlos Gomez (W, 2-1): 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER,, 2 BB, 1 K, HR
At this level: 3.86 ERA in 14 IP (8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 9 BB, 17 K). Overall, the 25-year-old owns an 81/40 K/BB over 63 IP. He was signed all the way back in 2018.
RHP Anderson Munoz: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Bailey Dees1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Since promotion: 21 IP, 17 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 12 BB, 18 K

Hudson Valley (70-62; 31-35 in the second half)

Their championship series against Greenville starts tomorrow. It is a best-of-3 and Greenville has home field advantage (Game 1 in Hudson Valley, final two games in Greenville)

Tampa (61-69; 30-34 in the second half)

Their season is over.

FCL Yankees (35-22; 1-2 in the playoffs)

They lost to the Braves in the championship series. Their season is over.

DSL Yankees (33-19)

Their season is over, as they missed the playoffs by a half-game.

DSL Bombers (27-26)

Their season is over.

Yankees MILB 8/9: Everson Pereira Homers, Drives Home 5

News:

I have nothing to share.

Scranton (51-56; 17-16 in the second half) (Knocked off Syracuse, 9-5)

SS Oswald Peraza0-for-1, 3 RS, 4 BB
We all know that Peraza had a 4 BB game for the MLB squad this year – this is his first such game in his minor league career.
C Austin Wells: 3-for-5, 2B (6), 2 RBI, 2 RS
Wells has six doubles in 16 games since his promotion (20 doubles in 74 games between here and Somerset). He is up to .273 with a .753 OPS in 16 games since his promotion.
RF Everson Pereira2-for-4, HR (6), 5 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Pereira has 30 RBI and 22 runs scored in 26 games since his promotion. Between Scranton and Somerset, he is hitting .309/.371/.559 with 16 homers and 61 RBI in 72 games. Furthermore, Pereira has seven multi-hit games in his last 11 games played.
3B Andres Chaparro0-for-4, BB, 2 K
DH Franchy Cordero1-for-4, RBI, 2 K
2B Jamie Westbrook1-for-4, 2B (13)
LF Michael Hermosillo0-for-4, 2 K
1B Jake Lamb0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
CF Brandon Lockridge1-for-4, RS, 2 K

RHP Will Warren5 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, HR
Since promotion: 5.24 ERA (55 IP, 55 H, 41 R, 32 ER, 11 HR, 29 BB, 57 K)
RHP Aaron McGarity1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
RHP Zach McAllister: (W, 1-0)  1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Greg Weissert: (S, 8)  1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, HR

Somerset (60-42; 18-16 in the second half) (Lost to Binghamton, 4-2)

CF Jasson Dominguez2-for-4, 2B (14), 2 SB (35)
Dominguez increases his hitting streak to eight, including four straight multi-hit games. During this stretch, he is 15-for-34 (.441/.500/.647; 4 doubles, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 6 R, 4 BB, 6 K, 6-for-7 SB). Overall, his line is up to .245/.365/.396 in 455 PA (14 doubles, 2 triples, 13 HR, 58 RBI, 71 R, 72 BB (15.8%), 118 K (25.9%), 35-for-42 SB (83.3%)). He is certainly earning that spot atop the Yankees’ prospect list.
1B Ben Rice0-for-3, BB, 2 K, SB (4)
Rice didn’t show much interest in stealing bases in 2021-2022, swiping five in 90 games. He has eight in 41 games this year, including four in his last five games.
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-4, K
Ramirez’s first Double-A hit. A common question I receive is about his defense. If he continues to hit like he is doing in 2023, you won’t care much about his defense. That said, I haven’t read anything that indicates that he will need to move off of the catching position.
LF Elijah Dunham0-for-4
2B Anthony Seigler2-for-4, HR (2), RBI, RS, K
Seigler’s first career start at 2B. Recently, Mickey Gasper and Aaron Palensky made their first career starts at second base.
DH Josh Breaux1-for-3, HR (5), RBI, RS, BB, K
Crazy that Seigler and Breaux, once considered the future behind the plate, homer on the same day with neither playing the catcher position. Anyway, Breaux hit 13 HR in 59 games for Somerset last year – should surprise nobody that he has five in 16 games this year.
SS Jesus Bastidas1-for-3, BB, K, CS (1)
3B Max Burt0-for-3, HBP, K, CS (5)
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-3, K

RHP Yoendrys Gomez (L, 0-2): 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2 HR
Gomez was done in by a pair of 2-run homers. He reached 64 pitches today.
RHP Bailey Dees2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Just like with Danny Watson, don’t be surprised if Dees’ strikeout rate falls in his first taste of Double-A. Eventually, Watson started to bring his up.
RHP Alex Mauricio2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
3.46 ERA (39 IP, 36 H, 16 R, 15 ER, 4 HR, 12 BB, 38 K)

Hudson Valley (57-45; 18-17 in the second half) (Lost to Jersey Shore, 9-2)

CF Spencer Jones0-for-4, CI, 2 K
SS Jared Serna1-for-4, K
DH Christopher Familia0-for-3, BB
C Rafael Flores0-for-4, 2 K
2B Ben Cowles1-for-3, 2B (15), RS, BB, K, SB (16)
Cowles increases his hitting streak to seven. He is hitting .257/.348/.403 in 351 PA.
3B Jesus Rodriguez: 3-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, 2 RS
4-for-7 in his first two games at this level. He had 28 multi-hit games for Tampa (84 games) and is one of the most consistent hitters in the system this season (.303/.383/.432)
RF Anthony Hall0-for-2, CI, BB, K
1B Spencer Henson1-for-4, 2B (16), RBI, K
LF Jared Wegner: 2-for-4, 2B (1), RBI, K
Wegner doubled in his first High-A AB. Though he was drafted this year, he is already 24 years old so they are smart to aggressively move him to High-A.

RHP Baron Stuart: (L, 1-1)  6 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 2 HR
Stuart threw 89 pitches. There is always that fine line with prospects – you want them to get their full work in but you don’t want them to feel overwhelmed. To Stuart’s credit, he tossed a scoreless 6th after giving up five runs in the 5th.
RHP Mason Vinyard1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, HR
Since promotion: 3.60 ERA (20 IP, 17 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 15 BB, 20 K)
RHP Harrison Cohen: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
Since promotion: 1.99 ERA (31.2 IP, 22 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 HR, 13 BB, 38 K)

Tampa (49-54; 18-19 in the second half) (Lost to Clearwater, 10-8)

3B Kiko Romero: 2-for-6, 2B (1), RBI, RS, K
Romero is 6-for-26 at this level with a pair of multi-hit efforts.
LF Coby Morales0-for-4, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
C Omar Martinez0-for-4, RS, 2 BB, 3 K
1B Josh Moylan1-for-3, 2 RS, 2 BB, K
Moylan is 5-for-16 (HR, 3 RBI, 6 R, 6 BB). He should play well at this level.
SS Brenny Escanio2-for-5, 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
RF Garrett Martin1-for-2, 2B (2), RBI, RS, HBP, 2 BB, K
4-for-19 with a pair of doubles.
CF Tayler Aguilar0-for-2, SF, RBI, HBP, BB
DH Cole Gabrielson0-for-4, RBI, RS, BB
2B Beau Brewer3-for-5, RBI
Brewer has three straight multi-hit games (five in his last seven games)

RHP Cam Schlittler4.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
He allowed three runs in three innings in his first appearance at this level, so nice improvement.
RHP Ocean Gabonia1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
RHP Anderson Munoz: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
The 25-year-old is on a rehab stint (he missed all of 2022). Tonight, he was hitting as high as 95.9 on the gun.
RHP Huey Morrill: (L, 0-1) 1.1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
RHP Montana Semmell: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR

FCL Yankees (25-19)

Day off.

DSL Yankees (27-14)

Day off.

DSL Bombers (20-23-1) (They completed a suspended game from July 13th…it ended in a 5-5 tie)

2B Gabriel Terrero2-for-4, RBI, K
CF Gabriel Lara1-for-1, RS, 2 BB, SB (9), CS (4)
The totals retrofit back to the date the game started. Lara actually has 15 stolen bases in 21 attempts and is hitting .256/.395/.408 in 157 PA

RHP Joshawn Lampson5.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
