Yankees MILB 7/2: Spencer Jones Homers

News:

The Yankees’ two representatives in this year’s Futures Game are OF Spencer Jones and LHP Brock Selvidge. Congrats to the Somerset teammates.

IF Caleb Durbin was transferred to the 60-day injured list today. That’s not good news. They made it retroactive to June 27, according to Conor Foley. That doesn’t make sense, since he last played on May 23rd. Whatever – any time a player is moved to the 60-day injured list, it is concerning. The only “good” news (for now) is that he hasn’t been transferred to the full-season list (minor league baseball has a full-season injured list).

Durbin, who has earned cult status amongst Yankees prospect watchers, missed several games last season due to a non-contact injury (he ended up playing in only 69 games). This year, he has missed several weeks due to a HBP. He should be in the conversation to take over second base in 2025, but this setback will cost him valuable development time.

LHP Ben Shields and RHP Eric Reyzelman were promoted from Hudson Valley to Somerset.

Shields compiled a 2.75 ERA (3.00 FIP) over 52.1 innings for Hudson Valley with a 34.8% K and 4.9% BB. That works. He made an emergency start for Scranton that didn’t go well, but it is fair to toss that.

Reyzelman is on the fast track to MLB and should be an option in 2025. The 23-year-old has yet to allow a run this season in 15.1 IP between the FCL (rehab stint) and Hudson Valley. He has 26 strikeouts and 5 walks.

Scranton (45-35) (Lost to Lehigh Valley, 5-3)

Lockridge will try to build off a .382/.462/.500 June.
2B Jorbit Vivas: 1-for-5, K
Vivas has an 8-game hitting streak (12-for-31) and a 13-game on-base streak.

Since promotion: 4-for-36 (.111) with a homer, five walks, and 11 strikeouts.

.298/.350/.471 in 246 PA since his promotion. It’s too bad that he only plays first base.

Jones, who flew out with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th, has five doubles and three home runs in his last six games, increasing his SLG from .381 to .427.

Cowles is in a little 0-for-13 slump, which has dropped his average to .288 (before the slump, he compiled a 9-game hitting streak. Baseball!)

DH Elijah Dunham: 2-for-4, K
Dunham has an 11-game hitting streak (16-for-46, .348).

Since being placed in Somerset, Moore has walked one batter in 7 IP. It is too small of a sample to get excited, but Moore with even slightly below-average control can be a potent bullpen piece.

.312/.486/.440 in 148 PA. His .486 OBP is second in the FCL.

The $275,000 bonus baby from 2022 (the same year they signed Roderick Arias) is trying to make up for lost time after missing 2023.
2B Abrahan Ramirez: 1-for-3, 2B (10), RS
FCL stats should be taken with a grain of salt, but Ramirez’s .396 batting average leads the league by 56 points. He also leads the league in OBP and SLG. Incredible season for the 19-year-old (he doesn’t turn 20 until October).
SS Juan Matheus: 2-for-3, SF, RBI, 2 RS, 2 SB (10), BB
Matheus’ .340 batting average trails only Ramirez’s for the FCL lead.

Yankees MILB 6/21: Jace Avina Doubles, Homers

News:

RHP Yoendrys Gomez and Phil Bickford were promoted to MLB today. RHP Ron Marinaccio was demoted to Scranton while LHP Victor Gonzalez was designated for assignment. Gonzalez doesn’t have enough service time to refuse an outright assignment, nor has he been outrighted before. Hence, if he somehow clears waivers (unlikely), the Yankees could store him for depth. Gonzalez looked like a good replacement for Wandy Peralta, but it hasn’t worked out. In 27 games, he pitched to a 3.86 ERA (5.93 FIP) with an 11/13 K/BB ratio over 23.1 innings. His calling card (ground balls) was still a strength (52.9%)

I would like to see Gomez get an extended look. He is out of options in 2025, so the time is now for evaluation. That said, he threw a lot of pitches tonight. Will the Yankees replace him for tomorrow’s contest? It isn’t impossible, but I hope not.

When Bickford debuts, it will become his 4th MLB organization since 2020. Unlike other Yankees’ relievers, Bickford is not a ground ball pitcher (35.2% career GB). However, he can miss bats (26.6%). Last season, he pitched to a 4.62 ERA in 25.1 innings for the Mets.

The weather cuts Serna’s start for the second consecutive time. While the stats aren’t official until the game concludes, this effort will lower his ERA below 4.00 (3.98 in 52 IP (37 H, 23 R, 23 ER, 2 HR, 15 BB, 61 K)). His ERA was 10.32 in his first three starts and 6.97 after five starts. He has been on quite a roll and is still under 20 (until July 20th).

FCL (22-13) (Defeated the Blue Jays, 8-1. I am still not sure how playing the same three teams is helpful, but I guess playing time is the most important thing)

Frias hit one home run in 35 games last year. He has two in three games this year.
