Yankees MILB 7/2: Spencer Jones Homers

News:

The Yankees’ two representatives in this year’s Futures Game are OF Spencer Jones and LHP Brock Selvidge. Congrats to the Somerset teammates.

IF Caleb Durbin was transferred to the 60-day injured list today. That’s not good news. They made it retroactive to June 27, according to Conor Foley. That doesn’t make sense, since he last played on May 23rd. Whatever – any time a player is moved to the 60-day injured list, it is concerning. The only “good” news (for now) is that he hasn’t been transferred to the full-season list (minor league baseball has a full-season injured list).

Durbin, who has earned cult status amongst Yankees prospect watchers, missed several games last season due to a non-contact injury (he ended up playing in only 69 games). This year, he has missed several weeks due to a HBP. He should be in the conversation to take over second base in 2025, but this setback will cost him valuable development time.

LHP Ben Shields and RHP Eric Reyzelman were promoted from Hudson Valley to Somerset.

Shields compiled a 2.75 ERA (3.00 FIP) over 52.1 innings for Hudson Valley with a 34.8% K and 4.9% BB. That works. He made an emergency start for Scranton that didn’t go well, but it is fair to toss that.

Reyzelman is on the fast track to MLB and should be an option in 2025. The 23-year-old has yet to allow a run this season in 15.1 IP between the FCL (rehab stint) and Hudson Valley. He has 26 strikeouts and 5 walks.

Lockridge will try to build off a .382/.462/.500 June.

Yankees MILB 7/1: Roc Riggio Continues Hot Streak

News:

Typically speaking, full-season leagues have Monday off. Not this week. Rather, they will play a Monday – Saturday schedule with Sunday off. That means they will get both Sunday and Monday off next week.

RHP Chase Hampton, who I assumed may not pitch in 2024, threw a rehab game for the FCL today.  I don’t think Hampton will impact the 2024 Yankees. However, it gives potential trade partners a chance to take a look at him.

C Josh Breaux, released by the Yankees on June 29th, found a job quickly. The Phillies signed him to a minor league deal and he was in tonight’s lineup for Double-A Reading against the Somerset Patriots. Organizations are always looking for catching depth, so it isn’t a shock that Breaux landed on his feet quickly.

Scranton (45-34)

The Railriders are rebels this week. They were off on Monday and will play two games on Wednesday instead.

Somerset (38-38) (Defeated Reading, 7-6, walk-off style)

Jones has doubled in five straight games. The power spike is encouraging (5 doubles, 3 HR in last 7 games) though the strikeouts keep piling up. I find his potential outcomes to be widely spread out.

Not known for his speed, Hardman did steal 14 bases in 18 attempts in 2022.

Hall was placed here on a rehab stint last week. The 23-year-old started 3-for-33 in Hudson Valley before being placed on the IL on April 26th. He was their 4th round pick in 2022 out of Oregon.

After missing the 2023 season, Urena is off to a .208/.301/.319 start here (83 plate appearances)

Imagine going 2-for-5 and having it not help your batting average. That happens when you hit .404/.516/.577 in 129 PA. He has six consecutive multi-hit games (10 multi-hit efforts in his last 11 games. That is nuts)

The 20-year-old is hitting .330/.443/.500 in 122 PA with three homers and 22 RBI.

I always say that speedsters should run as often as possible in the minors. Reyes (16) is 9-for-14 stealing bases in 16 games.

Maybe today is the start of the outburst we are waiting for. One of the home runs was a grand slam. This is Jones’ third career multi-HR game and second 4-hit effort. The 7 RBI are a personal best. Additionally, he has doubled in four straight games. In June, he went 32-for-108 (.296; 7 doubles, 1 triple, 6 HR, 29 RBI, 19 R, 5-for-6 SB, 10 BB, 44 K). Season: .252/.331/.419 in 293 PA (12 doubles, 2 triples, 9 HR, 45 RBI, 42 R, 17-for-21 SB, 10.2% BB, 35.5% K). I was waiting for the slugging percentage to get above .400. Next stop? .800 OPS.

.289/.369/.481 (136 wRC+) in 271 PA (21 doubles, 8 HR, 40 RBI, 33 R, 9.6% BB, 24.0% K). In Low-A for Milwaukee in 2023, Avina hit .233/.373/.442, which was good for a 134 wRC+. His walk rate is down but he is hitting for more average and power. Acquired as part of the deal for Jake Bauers, Avina is 21 years old.

C/1B Josh Breaux was released. The 2nd round pick in the 2018 draft showed off his trademark power at times (69 HR, .457 SLG in 326 games) but the rest of his game didn’t develop. Injuries didn’t help in his progression.

C/1B Josue Gonzalez was moved from the FCL to Tampa. After a spectacular 2023 in the DSL, Gonzalez wasn’t hitting as much in the FCL (.233/.395/.433), though he did launch 6 homers and drive in 21 runs in 35 games. Gonzalez did nothing but catch in the DSL, but has played more first base in the FCL (21 starts at first base, 13 games at catcher).

LHP Victor Gonzalez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Scranton. He couldn’t decline the outright. He will serve as depth for the remainder of 2024.

RHP Scott Effross will report to Scranton for the remainder of his rehab. Scranton’s game was postponed tonight, so expect him to get into one of tomorrow’s games. It shouldn’t be long before he is activated.

C/3B/OF/Everything Jesus Rodriguez was placed on the injured list for Somerset. Rodriguez is having a big season, hitting .327/.412/.504 with a 156 wRC+. He is the organizational leader in batting average and wRC+ among players in full-season leagues.

C/1B Rafael Flores was promoted from Hudson Valley to replace Rodriguez. The 23-year-old earned the promotion by hitting .285/.403/.466 (145 wRC+) in 233 PA. This was his second season at the level, but he only played four games in the FCL and skipped Low-A.

Former Yankees prospect Armando Alvarez went 3-for-5 in his MLB debut for Oakland. Alvarez is a story you root for: He is 29 years old with 700 minor league games. He was with the Yankees from 2016 to 2022 after being drafted in the 17th round out of Eastern Kentucky. When looking at Baseball Reference, he is the 8th player from Eastern Kentucky to make MLB—his big night already jumped him to 3rd on the bWAR list. Alvarez is why minor league free agency exists. It allows him to shop his services around. He landed in Oakland after spending one season in the Giants organization. While he never appeared in a game for the Yankees, he should be considered a developmental/scouting success for the organization.

Their game against Worcester was postponed.  They will try a Thursday doubleheader.

Selvidge struck out the final two batters he faced. Season: 3.75 ERA in 74.1 IP (64 H, 40 R, 31 ER, 4 HR, 36 BB, 72 K). The walks are on the high side (he has already walked more batters this year than last year (35 in 127.2 IP), but he keeps the ball in the ballpark (11 HR allowed in 248.1 career innings).

Serna is putting that 0-for-20 in his rearview mirror. He is hitting .265/.361/.481 in 305 PA (20 doubles, 12 HR, 52 RBI, 47 R, 11.8% BB, 17.7% K). He continues to be impressively productive. As for a promotion, he played 107 games for Tampa before getting to Hudson Valley. He has played 94 games at this level. I don’t think it is far off.

Avina has a 5-game hitting streak that features four extra-base hits (3 doubles, 1 home run). After solid efforts in April and May, he has slumped in June. Like Serna, perhaps he is breaking out of it.

I won’t call this his breaking-out party, but one of the fascinating (often annoying) aspects of following prospects is the sudden breakout party. You never know when (or if) it will happen.

Yankees MILB 6/23: Carlos Narvaez Goes 5-for-5

News:

The Yankees acquired 1B/3B J.D. Davis (and cash) from the Oakland Athletics for IF Jordan Groshans. The money will likely cover most (if not all) of what remains on Davis’ 1-year deal. It isn’t much.

Davis is hitting .236/.304/.366 (98 wRC+) in 135 PA. He has four home runs and five runs batted in. Interesting. The defensive metrics don’t love his performance, so he better hit if he wishes to keep a job. He had a run between 2019-2022 where he hit .276/.363/.457 (127 wRC+) over 1,258 plate appearances with a 10.5% BB and 27.3% K. However, the numbers haven’t been as strong in 2023-2024.

The Yankees need offense with Giancarlo Stanton out and there isn’t much available. They are not ready to give Agustin Ramirez a role, and none of the veterans in Triple-A excite you.

The bottom line? They wouldn’t need to do a signing like this if Gleyber Torres or DJ LeMahieu were producing. LeMahieu is showing no signs of life with the bat. He is moving towards “sunk cost” territory (if he isn’t there already).  I hope he doesn’t impact Ben Rice‘s playing time much. With the DH spot open, they can be flexible with playing time.

Scranton (42-32) (Mauled Buffalo, 18-9. They scored 12 runs in the 5th inning. As for last night’s postponed game, it is now listed as canceled. Instead of playing two in today’s heat (and pitching issues may have played a role), the game was permanently wiped off the calendar)

Yankees MILB 6/22: Jesus Rodriguez Hits First Double-A Homer

News:

RHP Cam Schlittler was promoted to Scranton from Hudson Valley. This is likely a move for need rather than a permanent placement. Typically speaking, a prospect isn’t going to skip over Double-A.

Schlittler has put together a solid season, pitching to a 2.32 ERA (3.97 FIP) over 54.1 innings with a 56.4% GB, 31.7% K, and 12.5% BB. It is a simplistic way to evaluate, but prospects who miss bats and keep the ball on the ground are gold.

LHP Chasen Shreve is back. The lefty was signed to a minor league deal today after opting out of his Rangers contract. Most of the time, players opt out because they have an MLB opportunity. For now, that isn’t the case with Shreve, but the Yankees bullpen is uncharacteristically in chaos mode. From 2015-2018, Shreve compiled a 3.92 ERA (4.99 FIP) over 174.2 innings for the Yankees. He was traded to the Cardinals (along with Giovanny Gallegos) for Luke Voit. While Gallegos has become a mainstay in the Cardinals’ pen, Shreve has bounced around.

DH Giancarlo Stanton left tonight’s game, potentially opening up a roster spot for many potential options. The first instinct for prospect lovers is Agustin Ramirez if the Yankees want to be aggressive. Alternatively, they could promote T.J. Rumfield and have Ben Rice take more DH at-bats (Rumfield has a better reputation at first base). Veterans like Oscar Gonzalez, Jose Rojas, and Taylor Trammell could be in the conversation. Oswald Peraza? He wouldn’t be a perfect fit for this role but he is conveniently on the 40-man roster.

Outside the organization, washed-up veterans Garrett Cooper and Jose Abreu are available. Abreu has a 3 OPS+ in 2024. That isn’t a typo. Cooper, a former Yankee, hit .206/.267/.299 for the Cubs and Red Sox this season. That’s good for a 59 OPS+. In other words, no. Just no. No. No. No. No. No.
