Yankees MILB 7/18: Jasson Dominguez Stays Hot

News:

The Yankees have promoted a few players. Firstly, C/1B Ben Rice is on his way to Somerset. Rice just completed a rehab stint in Tampa. Earlier this season, he was a beast for Hudson Valley. He hit .341/.559/.523 in 68 plate appearances and was likely in line for an early promotion to Somerset at that point. Rice is a 24-year-old left-handed bat.

The Yankees promoted LHP Brock Selvidge from Tampa to Hudson Valley. Only 20 years old, Selvidge pitched to a 3.38 ERA (2.75 FIP) over 77.1 innings for Tampa. His rates across the board are impressive: 28% K, 6.5% BB, and 52% GB. He was their 21st-round pick in 2021 and is not Rule 5 eligible until after 2025. Selvidge is on the same flight (bus?) as RHP Shane Gray, who will also make his way to Hudson Valley. Gray, a reliever, pitched to a 4.26 ERA (4.32 FIP) over 38 innings with a 28.7% K and 9.1% BB. The 23-year-old was chosen in the 16th round of the 2022 draft.

We will probably see more promotions in the coming days ahead.

According to Chris Kirschner on Twitter, the Yankees have signed 17 of their 18 draft picks. The lone holdout is 4th round pick Roc Riggio, who has some leverage as a draft-eligible sophomore.

Scranton (43-45; 9-5 in the second half) (Defeated Norfolk, 5-3)

CF Greg Allen1-for-3, RS, BB, K
His rehab stint was moved here from Tampa.
   CF Brandon Lockridge0-for-1, K
RF Everson Pereira1-for-5, 2 K
Pereira has at least one hit in all eight games since his promotion. The most recent five of those games are 1-hit affairs, but he is still hitting .371/.405/.543.
C Carlos Narvaez2-for-4, RBI, BB, K, SB (2)
Narvaez increases his hitting streak to five.
3B Andres Chaparro2-for-5, HR (18), 2 RBI, RS
In July, Chaparro is 15-for-44 (.341) with 3 HR and 16 RBI.
1B Jake Lamb1-for-4
DH Jamie Westbrook1-for-2, HR (13), RBI, RS, 2 BB, K
The veteran is hitting .295/.391/.506 in 277 PA.
LF Michael Hermosillo2-for-4, 2B (3), RS
SS Jesus Bastidas1-for-4, RS, K, SB (6)
.261/.322/.430 in 276 PA. Bastidas has a .752 OPS this season after a .750 mark with Somerset in 2022.
2B Wilmer Difo0-for-1, SF, RBI, 2 BB

RHP Jhony Brito: (W, 2-1)  6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, HR
LHP Matt Krook1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
1.05 ERA (25.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 18 BB, 46 K). I would love to see Krook get an extended MLB opportunity.
RHP Aaron McGarity0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, HR
RHP Zach Greene (S, 1): 0.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (49-34; 7-8 in the second half) (Lost to Hartford, 7-5)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-5, 3B (2), 3 RBI, K
If you are going to have a one-hit night, may as well make it a 3-run triple. Sweeney is hitting .245/.363/.425 in 366 plate appearances.
CF Jasson Dominguez2-for-5, HR (12), RBI, RS, K
Dominguez has four straight multi-hit games (six multi-hit games in his last seven games played). He is up to .220/.358/.383 in 363 plate appearances (27.3% K; 17.6% BB). After games of July 6th, he was hitting .198/.341/.343.
C Austin Wells1-for-5
Wells is 11-for-50 in July (.220). I would rather not see that, but he still doesn’t belong here.
1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-2, RS, 3 BB, 2 K
.217/.320/.446 in 284 plate appearances.
LF Elijah Dunham0-for-3, BB, HBP, K
3B Tyler Hardman1-for-3, 2B (9), RS, BB, 2 K
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
Palensky is hitting .187/.372/.374 in 121 plate appearances at this level.
DH Josh Breaux0-for-4, K
Breaux is 4-for-20 at this level after going 1-for-10 with Scranton.
2B Max Burt0-for-2, RBI, RS, BB, HBP, K, SB (10)

RHP Matt Sauer: (L, 1-2) 3.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K
Sauer needed 75 pitches to get those ten outs. The good part of that sentence is that he is being stretched out to 75 pitches after spending most of the first half on the shelf.
LHP Josh Maciejewski1.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
RHP Blas Castano1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, HR
LHP Lisandro Santos: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
2.74 ERA (46 IP, 27 H, 23 R, 14 ER, 2 HR, 32 BB, 49 K)

Hudson Valley (48-37; 9-10 in the second half) (Lost to Brooklyn, 7-4)

CF Spencer Jones2-for-4, HR (11), RBI, RS, K
.267/.341/.476 in 328 PA (20 doubles, 4 triples, 11 HR, 42 RBI, 43 R, 32 BB (9.8%), 101 K (30.8%), 21-for-29 SB). Jones is 12-for-34 in July with eight walks.
2B Ben Cowles0-for-3, BB, 2 K, SB (8)
Cowles is a perfect 8-for-8 stealing bases (14-for-20 in 2022)
C Agustin Ramirez1-for-4, 2 K
6-game hitting streak. Since promotion: .407/.439/.685 in 57 PA
DH Rafael Flores0-for-4, 2 K
LF Christopher Familia1-for-3, BB, K
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, 3B (4), RS
.213/.260/.348 in 288 PA (10 doubles, 4 triples, 6 HR, 34 RBI, 35 R, 17 BB, 76 K, 10-for-15 SB)
1B Spencer Henson1-for-4, RBI, RS, K
RF Grant Richardson1-for-4, 3B (2), RBI, RS, K
3B Eduardo Torrealba0-for-4

RHP Tyrone Yulie: (L, 4-6)  5 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 2 HR
4.48 ERA (70.1 IP, 53 H, 44 R, 35 ER, 11 HR, 40 BB, 84 K)
LHP Joel Valdez1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
RHP Harrison Cohen: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
Since promotion: 2.78 ERA (22.2 IP, 19 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 HR, 9 BB, 30 K)
RHP Carlos Gomez1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Tampa (42-43; 11-8 in the second half) (Won a crazy one against Lakeland, 17-11)

SS Jared Serna2-for-5, HR (18), 3 RBI, 3 RS, BB, K
Serna has four home runs and 13 RBI in his last four games. Overall, he is hitting .290 with 18 doubles, 1 triple, 18 HR, 64 RBI, and 62 runs scored. An incredible season.
3B Jesus Rodriguez: 2-for-6, 2 RBI, 2 RS, K
Rodriguez has three multi-hit games in his last four games played. He is up to .294 and has hit for average in his entire short career (tonight was his 163rd career game). He is only 21 and won’t turn 22 until next April.
2B Brenny Escanio3-for-3, 2 2B (7), 2 RBI, 3 RS, 2 BB
Escanio only had three hits all month entering tonight. Baseball! Anyway, reaching base five times in a game is always a special night.
C Omar Martinez: 2-for-5, 2B (8), HR (9, grand slam), 4 RBI, 2 RS
Martinez has homered in four of his last five games and has back-to-back 4-RBI efforts. He has done a solid job drawing walks this season (14.8% BB) and is now showing off some power in July.
CF Daury Arias1-for-4, 2 RBI, RS, BB
DH Brett Barrera: 2-for-5, RBI, 2 RS, 2 K
The Stanford product hasn’t been able to get much going since being drafted in the 8th round of the 2022 draft. A 2-for-28 start to 2023 put him in an instant hole. An injury in June held him back as well.
LF Jake Palmer0-for-4, RBI, RS, BB
1B Beau Brewer1-for-4, RBI, 2 RS, BB, SB (2)
RF Felix Negueis0-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, K

RHP Sean Hermann2.1 IP, 0 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 2 K
A rain delay in the third inning derailed his outing – the two runners that were on base prior to the delay ended up scoring. In other words, I think he deserves a pass.
RHP Yorlin Calderon2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
3.12 ERA (49 IP, 41 H, 20 R, 17 ER, 4 HR, 13 BB, 62 K). After an extended stretch of awesomeness, he has allowed runs in each of his last three appearances. No need for concern.
RHP Alex Bustamante: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K
RHP Cole Ayers: (W, 2-1) 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
Ayers did an outstanding job calming this game down. He has a 3.79 ERA in 38 IP with a 52/13 K/BB.
RHP Montana Semmel0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
Semmel’s Low-A debut. He was drafted back in 2019 out of high school – a kid whose development was altered by the lost COVID season and an injury that kept him out for 2021.

FCL Yankees (16-11)

Their game against the Blue Jays was postponed. They will try to make it up on July 25th.

DSL Yankees (19-10) (Lost to DSL Colorado, 12-6)

CF Brando Mayea0-for-3, RS, BB
RF Jose Castro1-for-4, HR (2), 4 RBI, RS, K
A grand slam for the 17-year-old, who is hitting .291/.444/.436 in 72 plate appearances.
DH Josue Gonzalez1-for-4, K
Gonzalez (hitting .440) is on a 6-game hitting streak.
1B Luis Ogando1-for-3, 2B (8), HBP, K, SB (8)
2B Luis Escudero2-for-4, RBI, RS
The 17-year-old is hitting .278/.441/.444 in 93 plate appearances.

DSL Bombers (12-17) (Lost to Arizona Black, 2-1)

DH Gabriel Terrero0-for-4, K
CF Gabriel Lara1-for-4

RHP Michell Chirinos: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K

Yankees MILB 7/16: Jasson Dominguez: Heating Up

News:

Veteran RHP Matt Bowman has opted out of his minor league deal. The Yankees have 72 hours to add him to the MLB roster or lose him. The 32-year-old has a 3.29 ERA in 38.1 innings for Scranton with a 36/18 K/BB. He hasn’t pitched in MLB since 2019.

OF Anthony Hall, who is hitting .271/.387/.452 (131 wRC+) for Tampa, is currently on the injured list (was placed there on 7/5). Hall, who only received one plate appearance before going down to injury in 2022, was likely in line for a promotion.

The Yankees have recalled IF Oswald Peraza. You likely have read about his slump (I highlighted it myself) and his less-than-ideal metrics. While that isn’t meaningless, I think that Peraza has established that he can play in Triple-A over the last two seasons. If you don’t give him a chance now, when are you going to give him one?

Scranton (42-45; 8-5 in the second half) (Lost to Norfolk, 4-3)

DH Estevan Florial1-for-3, RBI, 2 K
Florial is 10-for-34 (.294) in July with seven walks.
CF Everson Pereira1-for-4, 2B (3), RS
Pereira has at least one hit in all seven games since his promotion. Going back to his days in Somerset, he has a 9-game hitting streak. Between here and Somerset, he is hitting a gaudy .308/.373/.554 in 217 PA (13 doubles, 1 triple 11 HR, 40 RBI, 32 R, 20 BB, 61 K). The 28.1% K has to come down – that’s the one thing in his profile that gives you a little pause. For what it is worth, in the small Triple-A sample size, it sits at 21.9%.
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-4, 2B (3)
Since promotion: .272/.414/.464 in 157 PA.
3B Andres Chaparro: 2-for-4, 2B (17), RBI, RS, K
Chaparro is 13-for-39 (.333) in July with four doubles and 14 runs batted in. He is hitting .248/.336/.476 in 363 PA with 63 runs batted in.
1B Jake Lamb1-for-3, RBI, BB, K
RF Brandon Lockridge0-for-4

4.56 ERA (96.2 IP, 97 H, 55 R, 49 ER, 20 HR, 35 BB, 81 K)
RHP Michael Feliz1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
3.38 ERA (13.1 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 HR, 5 BB, 15 K). Don’t be surprised if the Yankees use him at some point.
LHP Anthony Misiewicz0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Michael Gomez0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Somerset (49-33; 7-7 in the second half) (Defeated Binghamton, 9-4)

SS Trey Sweeney3-for-5, 2 RBI, RS
Entering this game, he was drawing some walks in July (eight) but was only 6-for-30. Hopefully, this will get him back on track. This is his 5th 3-hit game this season. He is hitting .246/.366/.422 in 361 PA.
CF Jasson Dominguez2-for-4, 3B (2), 2 RBI, RS, BB
Dominguez has three straight multi-hit efforts and five in his last six games. He is hitting .217/.358/.372 in 258 PA (8 doubles, 2 triples, 11 HR, 43 RBI, 57 R, 64 BB, 98 K, 25-for-29 SB)
C Austin Wells0-for-3, SF, RBI, BB
9-for-45 (.200) in July with four walks and ten strikeouts. He does have 12 RBI, so there’s that.
1B T.J. Rumfield: 2-for-5, 2B (10), RBI, RS, K
Rumfield has back-to-back multi-hit games and has doubled in three straight games.
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-5, 3 K

3.72 ERA (94.1 IP, 87 H, 40 R, 39 ER, 13 HR, 23 BB, 101 K). Today was a grind, but he has pitched very well for a while now (16 ER in his last 61 innings (2.36 ERA))
RHP Zac Houston1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
RHP Jesus Liranzo: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K

RHP Danny Watson1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
Since promotion: 16.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 6 BB, 16 K

Hudson Valley (48-36; 9-9 in the second half) (Lost to Bowling Green, 8-2)

DH Spencer Jones0-for-2, 2 BB, K, CS (8)
Jones has ten walks in his last ten games. He is hitting .264/.340/.465 in 324 PA. The strikeout today was his 100th this season. He is going to strike out – the key for him is to limit them as much as possible to make himself a viable MLB player.
SS Ben Cowles0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K
C Agustin Ramirez: 2-for-4, 2B (9), RBI, RS
Since his promotion: .420/.453/.720 in 53 PA with seven multi-hit games (three consecutive). Overall, he is hitting .282/.396/.466 in 285 PA (16 doubles, 9 HR, 45 RBI, 42 R, 45 BB (15.8%), 47 K (16.5%), 7-for-11 SB)
1B Rafael Flores2-for-4, 2B (11), RBI
.291/.363/.369 in 273 PA

RHP Juan Carela: (L, 2-4)  4.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 3 HR
As I said last night, Bowling Green can hit. Drew Thorpe was able to navigate their lineup – Carela was not. Take it as a learning opportunity. His ERA is now 3.51 (77 IP, 62 H, 36 R, 30 ER, 6 HR, 29 BB, 98 K).
LHP Clay Aguilar1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR

News:

Nothing new to report.

Scranton (42-44; 8-4 in the second half) (Crushed Norfolk, 10-3)

CF Estevan Florial1-for-4, 2B (12), SF, 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
Florial has at least one hit in seven of his eight July games (has reached base safely in all eight games). Overall, he is at .290/.387/.588 in 331 plate appearances with 21 HR, 52 RBI, and 58 runs scored.
SS Oswald Peraza1-for-5, 2B (6), RS, 2 K
You know my opinion: Peraza has nothing to prove here. That said, he is in a little 7-for-44 stretch (.159) and this is only his second extra-base hit during that stretch. To be fair, he has drawn ten walks during this time period.
RF Everson Pereira1-for-5, 2B (2), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
Pereira has hit safely in all six games since his promotion (11-for-26; 2 doubles, 1 HR, 9 RBI)
C Ben Rortvedt1-for-5, RBI, 3 K
DH Andres Chaparro: 3-for-5, 2B (16), HR (17), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K

LHP Ryan Anderson0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

LHP Edgar Barclay (L, 2-1): 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K
They stretched him out to 60 pitches tonight. He now has a 1.05 ERA in 25.2 IP (19 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 38 K)

Hudson Valley (48-35; 9-8 in the second half) (Squeaked past Bowling Green, 5-4)

CF Spencer Jones2-for-5, RBI, RS, K
.266/.338/.469 in 320 PA (20 doubles, 4 triples, 10 HR, 41 RBI, 42 R, 30 BB, 99 K, 21-for-28 SB). He is 8-for-24 in July with six walks.
2B Ben Cowles2-for-4, RBI, BB, K
.254/.342/.392 in 269 PA. Cowles is 11-for-33 in July.
DH Agustin Ramirez3-for-5, 2B (8), K
Ramirez is 19-for-46 (.413) since his promotion. He has eight doubles in 11 games here after hitting seven doubles in 51 games for Tampa. This is his 5th 3-hit game this season, all since June 9th.
LF Christopher Familia1-for-4, RS, K
1B Spencer Henson2-for-4, K
SS Alexander Vargas1-for-4, RBI, RS
C Antonio Gomez1-for-3, RS, BB
.248/.315/.355 in 241 PA. Beyond an awful May (all months count, so we can’t just dismiss it), he has hit fairly well.
RF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-4, RBI, RS, K, SB (14)
  RF Grant Richardson0-for-0
3B Eduardo Torrealba0-for-4, 2 K

RHP Drew Thorpe: (W, 9-1) 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 10 K, 2 HR
2.27 ERA (91.1 IP, 67 H, 27 R, 23 ER, 6 HR, 30 BB, 111 K). He entered this game on one of the craziest runs you will ever find (1 run in the last 40.2 IP). So, now he has allowed four runs in his last 47.2 IP. By the way, Bowling Green entered tonight with the highest OPS in the league – so this was a nice little challenge for him.
RHP Bailey Dees1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
1.93 ERA (37.1 IP, 19 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 HR, 14 BB, 57 K).
RHP Jack Neely (S, 4): 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, HR
2.58 ERA (38.1 IP, 21 H, 13 R, 11 ER, 4 HR, 14 BB, 60 K)
All three pitchers I just listed should be promoted soon. None of them have anything else to prove here so time to make some space.

Tampa (40-43; 9-8 in the second half) (Lost to Lakeland, 4-3, in ten innings)

SS Jared Serna2-for-5, HR (17), 3 RBI, RS
Serna is now 15-for-49 (.306) in July (3 doubles, 4 HR, 15 RBI, 11 R). In an oddball stat: Serna has not attempted a stolen base since June 22nd. He is 16-for-21 in that department.
3B Jesus Rodriguez1-for-5, 2 K
Rodriguez is hitting .289 in 270 PA (11 doubles, 2 triples, 6 HR, 29 RBI, 38 R, 29 BB, 41 K, 11-for-13 SB).
DH Ben Rice0-for-3, BB, 2 K

2B Brenny Escanio0-for-4, 2 K
LF Jake Palmer0-for-3, RS, HBP

RF Felix Negueis: 0-for-4, K

LHP Brock Selvidge: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K
3.38 ERA (77.1 IP, 72 H, 34 R, 29 ER, 21 BB, 91 K). Selvidge (20 years old) has put together an encouraging season.
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
2.43 ERA (37 IP, 27 H, 11 R, 10 ER, 1 HR, 17 BB, 41 K)
RHP Adam Stone1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
RHP Matt Keating: (L, 5-7)  2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
The defense hurt him in the 9th. The ghost runner or whatever you wish to call him got him in the 10th.

FCL Yankees (16-11) (Destroyed the Phillies, 12-3)

DH Keiner Delgado: 2-for-3, HR (5), 5 RBI, 3 RS, BB, HBP, 2 SB (18)
Last two games: 3-for-7, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 4 RS, BB, 3 SB. This raises his triple slash from .267/.374/.448 to .277/.391/.500. He leads the FCL in runs scored with 31 and stolen bases with 18.
SS Roderick Arias1-for-3, 3B (2), 3 RBI, 2 RS, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 SB (13)
.283/.437/.543 in 119 PA (2 doubles, 2 triples, 6 HR, 25 RBI (second in FCL to teammate John Cruz), 30 R (second in the FCL), 25 BB, 25 K, 13-for-18 SB)
3B Hans Montero0-for-5, 2 K

LHP Allen Facundo (W, 3-0): 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K
1.80 ERA (15 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 10 BB, 26 K)
RHP Montana Semmell: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

DSL Yankees (19-9) (Lost to Brewers 1, 6-5)

C Brando Mayea0-for-4, BB, K
.265/.390/.397 in 82 PA. He is only 6-for-30 in July, but that comes with nine walks.
RF Jose Castro2-for-5, RB, RS
The 17-year-old is hitting .294/.456/.392 in 68 plate appearances. This is his debut season.
DH Josue Gonzalez1-for-2, K
Gonzalez (hitting .457 in 15 games) left the game early for reasons unknown.
DH Anthony Pena1-for-2, HR (2), RBI, RS
It is the DSL, so it is just as likely that they wanted to give a few at-bats to Pena today. He is at .306/.419/.556 in 43 plate appearances (debut season).
3B Santiago Gomez2-for-4, 2B (8), RBI
.329/.471/.506 in 104 plate appearances.
SS Luis Suarez0-for-3, RS, BB, 3 K, 2 SB (12)
1B Jhon Imbert1-for-4, RS, K, 3 SB (11)
2B Jelson Coca1-for-4, 2B (2), RBI, RS

4.40 ERA (28.2 IP, 25 H, 15 R, 14 ER, 5 HR, 6 BB, 28 K). It isn’t too often you see an extended appearance like this in the DSL.

DSL Bombers (12-16) (Lost to Colorado, 8-4)

3B Gabriel Terrero1-for-4, K, CS (4)
CF Gabriel Lara0-for-2, 2 BB, K, 2 SB (11)
11-for-14 stealing bases. He owns a .394 OBP.
LF Ramiro Altagracia2-for-4, HR (4), RBI, RS, K
.277/.317/.468 in 101 plate appearances.
2B Geyber Blanco2-for-4, 2 2B (9), 2 RBI, RS
SS Rafael Martinez1-for-3, 2B (5), RBI, CS (4)
The 17-year-old owns a .286/.364/.375 in 66 plate appearances.

Yankees MILB 7/14: Jared Serna: 2 HR, 7 RBI

News:

What do I think about the Yankees draft?

I don’t pretend to be something I am not. I don’t follow much college baseball and I sure as heck don’t pay attention to high school baseball – so how much can I really know?

It seems like a bit of a typical draft – perhaps a little more “meh” than some recent ones.  They will pay George Lombard Jr. an over-slot bonus, pay players without much leverage well below their slot, and mix in some of the kids they drafted beyond the 10th round. I will read up more on them as they make their debuts. Until then, I grade their draft somewhere between a 20 and an 80 on the 20-80 scale.

You are going to start to see Top 100 lists come out. As you get lower on those lists, remember that publications are choosing between several players for the last several slots. Is there a major difference between #97 and #105? Probably not – but it still is beneficial to find yourself on the list.

Baseball America had a nice write-up on Chase Hampton as one of their “Notable Risers.”  He went from unraked to 61st. Meanwhile, Prospects Live! didn’t rank him at all (and only ranked two Yankees – Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones).

The Yankees signed veteran cornerman Jake Lamb to a minor league deal. Lamb, who has experience playing all four corner positions, hit .216/.259/.353 with two home runs in 18 games for the Angels earlier this season. In 723 career games, he has a .235/.326/.427 (97 OPS+) line with 96 home runs. Most of the good stuff was compiled back in 2016-2017 when he hit 59 home runs and drove in 196 runs in 300 games for Arizona.

Scranton (41-44; 7-4 in the second half) (Lost to Norfolk, 7-3)

CF Estevan Florial0-for-3, 2 BB, K
47 walks in 68 games (54 in 101 games last season)
SS Oswald Peraza0-for-3, 2 BB, K
Peraza has nine walks in eight July games. He is only 6-for-30, so the walks have helped keep him afloat during a bit of a down period.
LF Everson Pereira1-for-4, RS, 2 K
Pereira has hit safely in all five games since his promotion. He is 10-for-21, so this isn’t a situation where he is “simply” earning a hit a game.
DH Ben Rortvedt0-for-4, 2 K
3B Andres Chaparro0-for-4, 3 K
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-3, HR (7), 2 RBI, RS, BB, 2 K
Narvaez is hitting .273/.418/.463 in 153 PA since his promotion. If the goal truly is to keep Austin Wells behind the plate, he will need to catch most of the time when he comes to this level. Assuming he ever does come to this level.
1B Jake Lamb1-for-4, 2B (1)
Lamb’s first game as a member of the Yankees organization.
2B Jesus Bastidas1-for-3, HR (9), RBI, RS, BB
.261/.325/.436 in 268 PA. Bastidas continues to flash some pop (last year, he hit 18 home runs and slugged .427 down in Somerset)
RF Brandon Lockridge0-for-3, BB, K, SB (7)
Lockridge is 24-for-27 stealing bases between here and Somerset.

RHP Will Warren: 3 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, HR
Since promotion: 4.74 ERA (38 IP, 34 H, 26 R, 20 ER, 8 HR, 18 BB, 39 K). He was on a bit of a roll entering tonight, so hopefully this is just a blip.
RHP Michael Gomez1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
LHP Matt Krook1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
RHP Aaron McGarity: (L, 4-2) 0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
LHP Anthony Misiewicz0.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K
Well, he might not last on the 40-man roster for long.
RHP Zach Greene1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Somerset (48-32; 6-6 in the second half) (Defeated Binghamton, 4-2, in a rain-shortened contest)

SS Trey Sweeney2-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, BB
Nice to see Sweeney earn a few hits. He is now 6-for-26 in July, though that comes with eight walks.
CF Jasson Dominguez2-for-3, RBI, BB, SB (25)
He has the OPS up to .700, courtesy of three multi-hit games in his last four games played. He is 11-for-35 in July.
C Austin Wells1-for-4, RBI, K
1B T.J. Rumfield1-for-3, 2B (8), RBI, BB, K
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-4, 4 K
LF Elijah Dunham2-for-4, 2B (1), 2 K, 2 SB (3)
Dunham has one objective: Get back to Scranton.
2B Max Burt0-for-3, RS, BB, K
DH Josh Breaux1-for-4, 2 K
RF Jeisson Rosario0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, K

RHP Chase Hampton: (W, 1-0)  5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 7 K
Hampton celebrates his inclusion on the Baseball America Top 100 with a solid performance. He didn’t seem to be on his game early, but he ended up with a strong line. Since promotion: 3.90 ERA (27.2 IP, 22 H, 13 R, 12 ER, 2 HR, 9 BB, 33 K)
RHP Tanner Myatt: (S, 5) 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Hudson Valley (47-35; 8-8 in the second half) (Lost to Bowling Green, 7-4, in a 6-inning, rain shortened game)

CF Spencer Jones0-for-0, RS, 3 BB
.263/.337/.470. Jones is starting to take some walks, as he has 19 in 30 June/July games. In April/May, he walked 11 times in 39 games. This is the point where you hope he starts putting the power/discipline together all at once.
2B Ben Cowles0-for-2, RS, BB, K
C Agustin Ramirez2-for-3, 2 2B (7), 2 RBI
Ramirez is 16-for-41 (.390) with seven doubles and two home runs since his promotion. That works.
LF Christopher Familia0-for-3
Meanwhile, Familia has struggled since his promotion: 8-for-43 (.186) with a home run and 16 strikeouts.
DH Rafael Flores0-for-2, RS, BB, 2 K
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-3
1B Spencer Henson0-for-2, BB, K
RF Grant Richardson2-for-3, HR (8), 2 RBI, RS
Richardson is hitting .192/.289/.390 in 93 games at High-A going back to last year. He has flashed some pop (18 HR) and speed (13-for-14 SB), but the rest of the game has yet to click.
3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-3, 3 K

RHP Zach Messinger: (L, 1-7)  4.2 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, HR
3.80 ERA (73.1 IP, 67 H, 42 R, 31 ER, 11 HR, 37 BB, 89 K). It has been a bit of a roller coaster, but I assume the Yankees feel good about what he has done this season.
RHP Harrison Cohen1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
2.95 ERA (21.1 IP, 19 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 2 HR, 9 BB, 27 K).
RHP Carlos Gomez0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Tampa (40-42; 9-7 in the second half) (Lost a crazy game to Lakeland, 14-12)

SS Jared Serna3-for-5, 2 HR (16), 7 RBI, 2 RS
Serna has a career night in a season filled with big nights. He is hitting .290/.349/.502 while leading the FSL in home runs (16) and RBI (58) while hitting leadoff all season. Is he due for a promotion soon?
CF Greg Allen1-for-2
Allen starts his rehab assignment.

CF Daury Arias0-for-1, BB
C Ben Rice: 2-for-5, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS
The question with Rice is what you do with him once the rehab is complete – Hudson Valley has Antonio Gomez and Agustin Ramirez. You could move him to Somerset (given his age and dominance of High-A earlier this season), but Austin Wells is there. Rice can squeeze out some playing time at first base, as well.
LF Jesus Rodriguez2-for-4, BB, CS (2)
Rodriguez was caught stealing 3B with two outs in the 9th, team down 14-12. That is what you call a teachable moment.
DH Omar Martinez1-for-5, HR (7), RBI, RS
Martinez has homered in back-to-back games.
2B Brenny Escanio0-for-3, 2 BB
3B Brett Barrera0-for-3, SF, RBI, RS, BB
1B Ronny Rojas1-for-3, 2 RS, BB
RF Felix Negueis1-for-2, RBI, 3 RS, BB, HBP, K

RHP Leonardo Pestana2.1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
4.97 ERA (38 IP, 36 H, 22 R, 21 ER, 7 HR, 19 BB, 50 K). Pestana made three appearances between 2021-2022, after the entire minor league season was canceled in 2020. Hence, they are taking it very easy with him.
RHP Kris Bow: (L, 2-3) 1.1 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 0 K
Bow is a bit of a work in progress – just has to keep going out there and gain experience.
RHP Shane Gray1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
RHP Manny Ramirez0 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, HR
RHP Yorlin Calderon2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K
2.87 ERA (47 IP, 39 H, 17 R, 15 ER, 4 HR, 12 BB, 61 K). I still wonder if the bullpen shift is permanent – the writing may be on the wall since that is the only role he has pitched in this year.
RHP Alex Bustamante: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

FCL Yankees (15-11) (Doubled up the Phillies, 8-4)

2B Keiner Delgado1-for-4, HR (4), 3 RBI, RS, HBP, 3 K, SB (16)
.266/.375/.468 in 128 plate appearances. He is only 6-for-34 in July, so hopefully this gets him back on track.
SS Roderick Arias0-for-2, 2 RS, 3 BB, K
His 13-game hitting streak is over, but we’ll take the three walks. Arias is hitting .281/.430/.528 in 114 PA with 22 RBI, 28 R, and 11 stolen bases in 16 attempts.
3B Hans Montero2-for-4, 2B (5), 2 RBI, HBP, SB (12)
.322/.504/.506 in 123 impressive plate appearances. He has reached base safely in 25 of his 26 games.
DH Enmanuel Tejeda0-for-5
CF Willy Montero1-for-3, RBI, RS, BB, K
.313/.370/.458 in 108 PA with 23 runs batted in. The 18-year-old is showing some prospect chops…
RF John Cruz2-for-4, RS, K
LF Joel Mendez2-for-4, RBI, K
C Edinson Duran: 2-for-3, RBI, 2 RS, HBP
20-for-48 (.417) with a pair of doubles and triples.
1B Kelvin Espino1-for-3, 2B (5), RS, BB, K

RHP Luis Serna3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
One of their intriguing lower-level pitching prospects puts together a strong effort.
LHP Edwar Polimir (W, 3-0): 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K
RHP Sebastian Keane1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, K
1.62 ERA (16.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 8 BB, 24 K)

DSL Yankees (19-8) (Doubled up the Giants, 10-5)

CF Brando Mayea2-for-5, 2B (6), 2 RBI, RS, BB, 2 K, SB (13), CS (3)
.281/.403/.422 in 77 PA with six doubles and a home run.
C Josue Gonzalez2-for-4, 2B (10), RBI, RS, 2 BB, SB (4)
20-for-44 (.455) with 22 walks and six strikeouts. I don’t care which level you are playing at – that is ridiculous.
3B Santiago Gomez1-for-3, RS, 2 BB, SB (10)
SS Luis Suarez0-for-1, RS, 2 BB
1B Luis Ogando1-for-3, 2B (7), 3 RBI, RS, 2 HBP, K

Yankees MILB 7/9: Drew Thorpe is Cruising

News:

Just like their MLB counterparts, the minor leagues will be taking Monday – Thursday off. The only exception is the DSL – poor kids.

Tonight is the MLB draft. Who do I think the Yankees will select?  I couldn’t tell you who most of the prospects are. If they don’t end up with Dave Parrish 2.0, that will be a good start.

Scranton (41-43; 7-3 in the second half. They will need to win the second half in order to make it to the playoffs)

Their game against Lehigh Valley was postponed, so they will get an early start to their vacation. Here are some notes:

Estevan Florial.294/.389/.596 (138 wRC+; 14% BB, 28.7% K) – His 21 home runs are good for second in the International League (Luken Baker (STL) has 22).

Oswald Peraza.267/.354/.506 (111 wRC+; 8.7% BB, 17.5% K) – The numbers may not scream at you (the International League is an offensive league), but Peraza seriously has nothing to prove here.

Everson Pereira: 9-for-17 (.529) with a home run and seven runs batted in since his promotion. Can a hot July get him to the Bronx in early August? The organization needs a left fielder and could determine that Pereira can do just as much as a trade option. We have a few weeks to figure all that out.

Andres Chaparro.242/.334/.464 (93 wRC+; 11.7% BB, 20.9% K) – He leads the organization with 60 runs batted in. The fact that a .798 OPS is good for only a 93 wRC+ emphasizes how offensive this league is. Brent Rooker (Oakland) has a .797 OPS in MLB and his wRC+ is 125.

Ben Rortvedt.298/.416/.543 (141 wRC+; 14.2% BB, 23% K) – He just has to stay healthy.

Carlos Narvaez.271/.416/.441 (121 wRC+; 18.1% BB, 20.8% K) – Don’t be surprised if you see his name come up in trade talks in the next few weeks. No, he cannot headline a trade. However, he is an upper-level catcher who is having success with the bat. That has value.

Somerset (47-32; 5-6 in the second half) (The game against Reading was suspended in the bottom of the 9th with the score tied at 4-4. They will finish it on August 15th)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-4, RS
LF Jasson Dominguez0-for-4, K
C Austin Wells1-for-3, 2B (14)
Don’t worry about why Wells was pulled – he was ejected from the game. Anyway, he is now up to 107 Double-A games over the last two seasons. In those games (482 PA), he is hitting .255 with 22 doubles, 1 triple, 23 homers, 91 RBI, 61 R, 57 BB (11.8%), and 112 K (23.2%). He is also 11-for-11 SB.
   C Mickey Gasper0-for-1
3B Tyler Hardman0-for-3, BB, 2 K
1B T.J. Rumfield: 0-for-3, HBP
CF Elijah Dunham3-for-4, HR (1), RBI, RS, K
This is a welcome sight for Dunham. He had four 3-hit efforts for Scranton this year, though two of them came in April. Hopefully, he gets a nice confidence boost and gets back up there quickly.
RF Aaron Palensky0-for-4, K
Palensky is down to .202 since his promotion (17-for-84; 5 doubles, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 20 R, 21 BB, 21 K, 7-for-8 SB). The walks have kept him afloat at this level after his .352/.434/.744 insanity with Hudson Valley.
DH Josh Breaux2-for-4, RS
2B Matt Pita1-for-3, HR (1), 2 RBI, RS, K
Pita also hit a pair of home runs down in Tampa during his rehab stint.

RHP Richard Fitts: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

Cowles has doubled in three straight games and 9-for-27 (.333) in July.
SS Alexander Vargas0-for-4, K
Vargas, who got off to a very encouraging start, enters the break at .215/.264/.348 in 277 PA (10 doubles, 3 triples, 6 HR, 33 RBI, 33 R, 10-for-15 SB)

DH Christopher Familia0-for-4, 4 K
Since promotion: 8-for-40 (.200; 2 doubles, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 7 R, 1 BB, 16 K). The Yankees needed to challenge him and he certainly is being challenged.
1B Spencer Henson0-for-3, 2 K
RF Anthony Garcia1-for-3, HR (4), RBI, RS, 2 K
.197/.301/.322 in 176 PA.
LF Aldenis Sanchez1-for-3, K

3B Marcos Cabrera0-for-3, 2 K
CF Grant Richardson0-for-3

RHP Drew Thorpe: (W, 8-1) 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K
Thorpe has allowed one run in his last 40.2 innings. Overall, he owns a 2.13 ERA in 84.1 IP (61 H, 24 R, 20 ER, 4 HR, 28 BB, 101 K). It is hard to believe his ERA was 4.26 at one point. Yes, he has earned a promotion – that goes without saying.
RHP Jack Neely: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K
2.41 ERA (37.1 IP, 19 H, 12 R, 10 ER, 3 HR, 14 BB, 59 K). Kids like Neely should overpower this level, and he is.
RHP Luis Velasquez (S, 1): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Tampa (40-41; 9-6 in the second half) (Defeated Dunedin, 6-1. They didn’t get off to a great start to 2023 but now they are on the brink of reaching .500)

2B Jared Serna0-for-3, RS, BB, K
He goes into the break hitting .285/.346/.481 in 347 PA (18 doubles, 1 triple, 14 HR, 51 RBI, 55 R, 28 BB (8.1%), 59 K (17%), 16-for-21 SB). There isn’t much to complain about with Serna – he has been everything you would want him to be. From the leadoff spot, he leads the FSL in home runs and RBI, while ranking third in runs scored.
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-3, BB
DH Ben Rice2-for-3, 2B (3), RS, BB
Rice was having no issues with High-A pitching before his injury – did we expect him to have any trouble here during his rehab stint? The rust is seemingly shaken off.
C Omar Martinez: 3-for-4, HR (6), 2 RBI, 2 RS
.237/.366/.374 in 238 PA (7 doubles,1 triple, 6 HR, 29 RBI, 29 R, 37 BB (15.5%), 72 K (30.3%), 5-for-6 SB). I love the walks – the strikeouts need improvement.
SS Brenny Escanio0-for-3, RS, BB, 2 K

The toolsy outfielder is hitting .232/.320/.337 in 278 PA.

2B Delvin Perez1-for-4, 2B (2), RS, K, 2 SB (9)

RHP Yoendrys Gomez: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
1.21 ERA (22.1 IP, 12 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 14 BB, 23 K). He allowed seven walks in five innings over the course of two starts a few weeks ago, so that explains the elevated walk rate. We just patiently await to see when they start to stretch him out more.
LHP Edgar Barclay4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
0.44 ERA (20.2 IP, 13 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 0 HR, 9 BB, 32 K)

RF Grant Richardson0-for-3, BB
3B Eduardo Torrealba: 2-for-4, RS, K, SB (6)
2B Luis Santos2-for-4, 2 RS, K, SB (4)

RHP Juan Carela: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, HR
2.99 ERA (72.1 IP, 54 H, 30 R, 24 ER, 3 HR, 26 BB, 93 K). The 21-year-old is putting on a clinic and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him in Somerset before the season ends. Last season, they moved him up to this level for seven starts – he didn’t do well, but he obviously learned a thing or two.
RHP Mason Vinyard: (W, 1-0)  1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Vinyard stranded two of Carela’s runners. Excellent job – though he couldn’t keep his own runs off the board in his second inning of work.
RHP Bailey Dees: (S, 4) 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K
1.98 ERA (36.1 IP, 19 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 14 BB, 55 K). Pure dominance.

Tampa (39-41; 8-6 in the second half) (Defeated Dunedin, 9-5)

2B Jared Serna: 2-for-4, RBI, RS, BB, K
Serna has three multi-hit games in his last four games played and 24 multi-hit games this season (74 games played). He is hitting .288/.347/.486 in 343 PA with 14 home runs, 51 RBI, and 54 runs. As of this writing, he leads the FSL in home runs and runs batted in and is third in runs scored.
LF Jesus Rodriguez: 2-for-5, 2 HR (6), 3 RBI, 2 RS, K
Rodriguez’s first career multi-HR game. He hit six home runs in 94 games between 2019-2022 (remember that there wasn’t a season in 2020) and has six in 64 games this season. Rodriguez is hitting .291/.369/.439 in 256 PA. I will always say it: I don’t care what your prospect ranking is – if you hit, I pay attention. The Yankees have used him at C (11 starts)/1B (12)/3B (34)/LF (3).
C Ben Rice: 1-for-4, HR (1), 4 RBI, RS, HBP
He is hitting .311/.511/.516 in 21 games between here and Hudson Valley. He is here on a rehab stint.

RF Felix Negueis0-for-2, RS, 2 BB, K

RHP Justin Lange: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K
4.64 ERA (54.1 IP, 33 H, 32 R, 28 ER, 5 HR, 46 BB, 85 K). So far, he is giving me the vibe of a kid that they will eventually throw in the bullpen and hope he can develop enough command/control to dominate for an inning or two.
RHP Yorlin Calderon: (W, 4-2)  1.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
2.80 ERA (45 IP, 36 H, 16 R, 14 ER, 4 HR, 12 BB, 56 K)
RHP Matt Keating: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
4.41 ERA (34.2 IP, 34 H, 21 R, 17 ER, 3 HR, 19 BB, 56 K). He tossed 41 pitches today and gave up that run towards the end of his outing.
RHP Adam Stone1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K
LHP Geoffrey Gilbert1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
2.27 ERA (35.2 IP, 26 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 1 HR, 15 BB, 41 K)

FCL Yankees (13-11)

LF Andres Lacruz1-for-2, RBI, RS, 2 BB, 3 SB (11)
Lacruz was 1-for-4 stealing bases in 2022 (20 games). This year, he is 11-for-12 in 17 games.
SS Jelson Coca1-for-2, RS, 2 BB, K
The 17-year-old is hitting .235/.339/.294 in 15 games. This is his professional debut season.
1B Andry Javier2-for-3, 2B (3), 2 RBI, BB, K
The 19-year-old switch hitter has improved from .111/.246/.167 (26 games) last year to .372/.518/.442 (15 games) this year.

RHP Stanly Alcantara2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K
The 6’6″ 19-year-old has a 2.79 ERA in 9.2 IP (9 H, 8 R, 3 ER, 0 HR, 14 BB, 4 K). Now that is a DSL line.

Infielder Johan Ferreira (2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K) and catcher Carlos Herrera (0.1 IP) were asked to get the final seven outs.

Yankees MILB 7/7: Everson Pereira: 4 Hits

News:

Nothing to report. I can go on a tirade about how this organization keeps recycling the same bad players, hoping for a better result but why bother?

Scranton (41-42; 7-2 in the second half) (Defeated Lehigh Valley, 9-8, in ten innings. Wilmer Difo hit a 2-run HR with two outs in the 10th for the win)

CF Brandon Lockridge2-for-5, RS, 2 K
Lockridge is up to .323 since his promotion. He has three straight multi-hit games (8-for-13)
DH Oswald Peraza0-for-3, 2 BB, K, CS (3)
Peraza has seven walks in six July games.
RF Everson Pereira: 4-for-5, 2B (1), 2 RBI, RS
Pereira is 8-for-14 with 7 RBI since his promotion. Can he play in MLB right now? I think he could – I wouldn’t expect a miracle, but Triple-A truly is just a little stepping stone to MLB (Oswald Peraza’s journey notwithstanding). A prospect shouldn’t be asked to do much here before earning their shot.
1B Andres Chaparro0-for-5, 2 K
C Carlos Narvaez1-for-4, RBI, RS, HBP, 2 K
Narvaez has hit safely in eight of his last nine games.
3B Jamie Westbrook1-for-4, 2B (10), 2 RS, HBP
2B Jesus Bastidas0-for-3, RS, BB, HBP, K
LF Michael Hermosillo1-for-5, HR (11), 4 RBI, RS
His grand slam in the 8th tied the game up at 7-7. Hermosillo has never hit in MLB – he has done a nice job as a veteran presence for the Yankees minor leaguers.
2B Wilmer Difo: 1-for-4, HR (3), 2 RBI, 2 RS, BB
Walk-off blast with two outs in the 10th.

RHP Zach Greene: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
First appearance since coming off of his rehab stint.
LHP Josh Maciejewski2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
At this level: 0.96 ERA in 9.1 IP (8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K)
LHP D.J. Snelten1 IP, 2 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
RHP Michael Gomez1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K

Somerset (47-31; 5-5 in the second half) (Lost to Reading, 4-2)

SS Trey Sweeney1-for-3, HR (12), RBI, RS, 2 BB, K, CS (6)
Sweeney’s HR was of the leadoff variety. He is hitting .242/.366/.431 in 339 plate appearances.
LF Jasson Dominguez2-for-5, RBI, 2 K
Dominguez has three multi-hit games in July (seven games played). It’s hopefully a start…
C Austin Wells2-for-4, BB
In 105 Double-A games: .258/.354/.484 with 21 doubles, 23 HR and 90 runs batted in.
DH Tyler Hardman0-for-5, 4 K

1B T.J. Rumfield0-for-4, 2 K
CF Elijah Dunham1-for-4, CS (1)
RF Aaron Palensky1-for-3, BB
3B Eric Wagaman1-for-2, 2 BB
Wagaman’s first career game at 3B. He is on a 7-game hitting streak (12-for-24)
2B Mickey Gasper0-for-4, RS

RHP Blane Abeyta: (L, 5-4)  5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
Abeyta has a 5.93 ERA but I assume the organization is at least intrigued by the 83 strikeouts in 74.1 innings. It didn’t show tonight, but he has some issues with control – do you start thinking of a bullpen shift? In college, he pitched a lot out of the pen.
RHP Tanner Myatt1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
RHP Danny Watson2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, HR
Since promotion: 1.76 ERA (15.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 14 K)

Hudson Valley (45-34; 6-7 in the second half) (Lost to Jersey Shore, 8-4)

SS Alexander Vargas0-for-5, RS, 2 K, SB (10)
LF Christopher Familia1-for-4, RS, BB, 2 K
Familia is 8-for-36 (.222) since his promotion with two doubles, a home run, a walk, and 12 strikeouts.
DH Agustin Ramirez1-for-4, HR (2), 3 RBI, RS
Since promotion: .382 (13-for-34; 4 doubles, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 6 R). Ramirez is becoming a legitimate catching prospect who is Rule 5 eligible. He’s probably a few years away from being ready but you never know what other organizations might do.
1B Rafael Flores0-for-4, RS, BB
C Antonio Gomez2-for-5, 2B (14), K
.246/.312/.355 in 237 PA. Since the beginning of June, he is 25-for-79 (.316) with seven doubles.
RF Aldenis Sanchez3-for-5, 2B (10), RBI, K, CS (5)
Sanchez has a sneaky 7-game hitting streak going (10-for-26; 4 doubles)
CF Grant Richardson0-for-3, BB, SB (11)
3B Marcos Cabrera1-for-4, 3 K, SB (4)
2B Eduardo Torrealba: 2-for-3, 2B (3), BB

RHP Zach Messinger: (L, 1-6)  5.1 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 4 HR
3.54 ERA (68.2 IP, 62 H, 35 R, 27 ER, 10 HR, 34 BB, 85 K).
RHP Carlos Gomez2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
LHP Clay Aguilar0.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Tampa (38-41; 7-6 in the second half) (Defeated Dunedin, 4-2)

2B Jared Serna0-for-4, RS, K
3B Jesus Rodriguez0-for-4, K
C Omar Martinez: 1-for-3, 2B (7), RBI, BB, K
.230/.358/.356 in 229 PA. Taking walks has been his strength throughout his minor-league journey.
SS Brenny Escanio1-for-3, RBI, BB, 2 K
DH Brett Barrera0-for-4, K
CF Daury Arias0-for-4, 2 K
LF Jake Palmer0-for-2, RS, 2 BB
So far in July: 8-for-16 with five walks.
1B Ronny Rojas1-for-4, HR (6), 2 RBI, RS, 2 K
The 21-year-old Rojas has homered in back-to-back games.
RF Felix Negueis0-for-3

RHP Sean Hermann6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K
5.91 ERA (67 IP, 80 H, 50 R, 44 ER, 6 HR, 29 BB, 53 K). Hermann is an extreme GB guy with a very high BABIP. He is also very young, at 20 years old.
RHP Ocean Gabonia0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K
I guess he was officially in the game, even though he never threw a pitch (rain delay)
RHP Alex Bustamante (W, 4-0): 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K
2.97 ERA (33.1 IP, 20 H, 15 R, 11 ER, 0 HR, 25 BB, 35 K)
RHP Manny Ramirez (S, 3): 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K

FCL Yankees (13-11) (Squeaked past the Blue Jays, 8-7)

2B Keiner Delgado1-for-4, 2B (10), RS, BB, CS (3)
Delgado’s ten doubles are good for second-best in the league.
SS Roderick Arias1-for-4, 2B (2), RBI, RS, K, SB (10), CS (4)
Arias now has a 12-game hitting streak.
3B Hans Montero0-for-1, 2 RS, 2 BB, HBP,  K, SB (11)
Montero has 83 walks in 488 career PA (17%). He did a lot of walking but not much hitting in the DSL – in the FCL this year, he has added some hitting.
DH Enmanuel Tejeda2-for-4, RBI, SB (16)
Tejeda now has an 8-game hitting streak (12-for-30). So far, he is outperforming his DSL numbers from 2022 (1.059 OPS this year; .956 last year), He has the league lead in stolen bases all to himself – a category where the Yankees have four of the top five players in the league (Tejeda, Delgado, H. Montero, Arias)
CF Willy Montero2-for-4, HR (2), 2 RBI, RS, K
Montero hasn’t done much walking or stealing this year – instead, he is simply producing: .307/.364/.455 with 21 RBI in 21 games.
RF John Cruz1-for-3, RS, HBP, 2 K

RHP Jackson Fristoe1.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 BB, 3 K
So far, in his short professional career, control has tripped him up (15 BB in 12.1 IP). This mimics his issues at Mississippi State, so he was likely drafted as a strong-armed project.

Yankees MILB 7/6: Roderick Arias Homers Twice

News:

RHP Zach Greene‘s rehab is over and is on his way to Scranton. Greene has some credibility in the baseball world, as the Mets chose him in last winter’s Rule 5 draft. The 26-year-old pitched to a 3.42 ERA in 68.1 innings with a 96/32 K/BB ratio for Scranton in 2022.

The Yankees claimed LHP Anthony Misiewicz off of waivers from the Tigers organization. He will take the 40-man roster spot that was occupied by RHP Jimmy CorderoThe Yankees will have another 40-man roster decision to make tomorrow when LHP Carlos Rodon is activated off of the 60-day injured list. It is possible they can transfer OF Greg Allen to the 60-day list. It also isn’t impossible that they will simply DFA Misiewicz himself and try to get him through waivers.

.263/.330/.470 in 312 PA. I think most would have expected 21 HR and 10 stolen bases, not vise versa. Anyway, he has the athleticism to steal some bases – whether he will do a lot of that in a few years is anyone’s guess.

Yankees MILB 7/4: Everson Pereira Homers in Triple-A Debut

News:

OF Everson Pereira is now a member of the Scranton Railriders.

Ranked as the #4 prospect in the system by Pipeline, Pereira hit well for Somerset this season. In 185 plate appearances, he hit .292/.362/.545 (143 wRC+) with ten home runs and 31 runs batted in. He plays all three outfield positions, though there is talk he is best suited at a corner. This happens to a lot of prospects as they mature. I am not sure if Pereira has completely outgrown center field, but he likely has enough bat to play a corner anyway.

The one negative in his game is a K% that sits at 29.2% this season. A high batting average and high K% typically mean a high BABIP, and that is the case with Pereira. His BABIP is .373. Also, he has a history of some annoying injuries. Last season, he set a personal best with 102 games played. An injury earlier this season likely keeps him away from breaking that record.

Can he make it to MLB in 2023? Yes. He is already on the 40-man roster, so it will be a relatively simple transaction once they deem him ready. If not, he is certainly a 2024 option if they don’t use him as trade bait.

To make room for Pereira, the Yankees demoted Elijah Dunham to Somerset. Dunham hasn’t been able to get much going this year, so perhaps this will jumpstart him into a solid second half.

Scranton (38-42; 3-2 in the second half) (Lost to Lehigh Valley, 5-4. They loaded the bases in the 9th with Oswald Peraza and Everson Pereira coming up, and couldn’t get the game tied. Baseball!)

CF Estevan Florial: 1-for-3, RS, 2 BB
Last 6 games: 9-for-23 (.391; 1 double, 1 triple, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 9 R, 7 BB, 4 K). Whether you think he is MLB caliber or not, there is no doubt that Florial has done everything he can to earn that shot.
SS Oswald Peraza0-for-3, RS, 2 BB, 2 K
.280/.360/.543 in 186 PA.
RF Everson Pereira: 2-for-5, HR (1), 3 RBI, RS, K
This is what you call a successful debut. He homered in his first at-bat (an at-bat where he battled back from 0-2 to make it 3-2). The home run traveled 426 feet at 111.4 MPH. His talent is legitimate.
DH Ben Rortvedt1-for-2, RS, BB, HBP

Brito’s statistics down here are meaningless. I am not just saying that because he owns a 6.39 ERA. He is down here to continue to work on things for the inevitable call-up at some point later this season.

4.79 ERA (35.2 IP, 35 H, 20 R, 19 ER, 7 HR, 17 BB, 47 K). Injuries limited him to only three appearances between 2021-2022, so they are taking it easy with him.

DSL, 2022: .262/.396/.382 in 235 PA
FCL, 2023: .291/.356/.418 in 90 PA.
Yes, the BB rate has gone down – but while the FCL isn’t the perfect league, the DSL is a crazy league. I am never alarmed by walk rates going down when a player gets away from that league.

RHP Osiel Rodriguez: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K
I firmly believe that Rodriguez belongs in Tampa.
RHP Montana Semmell: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K
A needed dominant performance by Semmell, who pitched well in limited action here in 2022.He was drafted in the 36th round out of high school back in 2019. The Yankees nabbed him for $125,000 – an important number because $125,000 is the max you can give a player after the 10th round without it counting against your bonus pool.
